Paul and Suzanne Hanifl of North Oaks hope to make their mark on Minnesota’s thoroughbred racing industry. The couple, who left the Chicago area a few years ago to be closer to their three children and grandchildren, made a deliberate decision to advance horse racing in Minnesota after relocating their small breeding operation to St. Michael. A half-dozen thoroughbred mares call Suzanne Stables home, and the Hanifls spare no expense finding the best stallions to service them. “Horses are a big part of our life,” Suzanne said. “We want to help the state’s racing community by running quality horses at Canterbury (the racetrack in Shakopee).” Last month, the Hanifls welcomed their latest baby, a muscular bay colt with a very famous dad: Triple Crown winner Justify. Fourth of July will be celebrated this Sunday. The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. A fireworks show is planned in White Bear Lake on July 4 at 10 p.m., near West Park/ Memorial Beach. Music and festivities begin at 8 p.m. See additional 4th of July events on page 9.

VH Council approves agreement on roundabout maintenance VADNAIS HEIGHTS — The maintenance of the new roundabout near Interstate 694 and Rice Street will be the responsibility of the city, not the county.
The project, initiated by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), cost $23 million to complete. It included not only the construction of three roundabouts (one each in Shoreview, Little Canada and Vadnais Heights) but new
lighting and sidewalks, trails, and storm and sanitary sewers at each site. The City Council approved the maintenance agreement with Ramsey County after the infrastructure was put in place. The cost for Vadnais Heights’ share is $392 per
