It’s the most wonderful time of the year … time for Press Publications’ Holiday Lights Contest, that is.

Press Publications is eager to see everyone’s displays. The second annual contest will kick off the week of Dec. 22 and run through Dec. 31.

With COVID-19 still hanging around this holiday season, many families are looking to get out and about to find a way to celebrate.

“Everybody is at a different point in their COVID journey, and people have different levels of concern, so this activity is open to most people,” said Publisher Carter Johnson.

Last year’s holiday lights contest was created out of a pandemic year, and while this year may feel a bit different with the return of holiday concerts, plays and family events—all thanks to increased vaccinations—the holiday lights still offer a feeling of hope for the future.

“The lights have different meanings to different people,” Johnson noted.

Whether it’s to celebrate the birth of Christ or to cope with the gradual onset of the shortest days of the year, an opportunity to view holiday lights can be another reason to get families together.

Water Gremlin wins property damage suit

ST. PAUL — A class action suit filed against Water Gremlin by a White Bear homeowner was dismissed, with prejudice, last week by District Court Judge Leonardo Castro.

The plaintiff, Robert Sharot, filed the suit in October 2020, saying the plant's release of toxic TCE into the air and its widely publicized contamination harmed the value of his property.

The court expressed concern last May with Sharot's ability to prove his claims and granted time to conduct limited discovery on the existence of injury and property damages related to his allegations. But the plaintiff did not conduct discovery specific to his property, as the judge requested.

In the Nov. 12 motion siding with Water Gremlin, the court said Sharot relies mostly on evidence presented by his expert, explaining that the widely

Sharot was represented by Minneapolis attorney Jeffrey Storms and Laura Sheets, a partner in the Detroit law firm of Liddle Sheets Coulson, specialists in class action suits. Water Gremlin was represented

by Ben Kappelman and Amy Weisgram, Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Water Gremlin stopped using TCE as a solvent in its battery terminal manufacturing process in 2019. In 2018, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency investigated Water Gremlin after the company failed to report accurate emissions data for more than 15 years, violating its permit and exposing surrounding neighborhoods to TCE levels.

Air dispersion models regarding TCE emissions were created by state health and pollution control officials that referred to an "area of concern," which is the geographical area where emissions of the chemical exceeded 2 micrograms per cubic meter of air.

Sharot's property is outside the area of concern.

According to the court document, Sharot does not believe his exclusion from the area of concern would change the perception that his home was impacted by Water Gremlin's release of TCE. He also believes every household within the original area of concern shares his beliefs.

That area was revised after MPCA received meteorological data it said better represented conditions near the township plant.

Noting that the plaintiffs had produced no evidence that his property was contaminated, the judge asked Sharot's attorneys if any testing had

been done on the property to determine whether TCE had "touched" it. Their response was that TCE was not a "forever chemical," and "it doesn't last that long in areas that far away from the Water Gremlin facility."

The court order noted that counsel conceded that Sharot had no proof of actual contamination.

In his affidavit, Sharot stated he no longer enjoys his home and does not trust the land it sits on or the air he breathes. He does not garden because he does not trust the soil and does not walk his dog because of Water Gremlin's conduct.

Judge Castro said the plaintiff has not offered evidence from which a reasonable jury could conclude that the defendant caused either injury to property or unreasonable interference with the enjoyment of his property.

"The court does not dispute that Sharot does not share the same level of comfort in his property as he once did before he learned of the TCE emissions," the judge wrote. "However, his beliefs are insufficient to establish a material and substantial interference.

Water Gremlin had stopped emitting TCE before the plaintiff became aware of the emissions."

In a statement to the Press, Water Gremlin President Scott Schulz said, "We are pleased the court found that there was no basis for the claims and dismissed the case."

It should be noted that the fact the case was dismissed with prejudice is significant. That means the plaintiff cannot refile the same claims again in district court.

publicized TCE pollutant reduced his property value by 3% and made his home "less desirable."

The expert's report included an appraisal of Sharot's property at 1872 Third St. as of Jan. 31, 2019. The judge noted that this was prior to public disclosure of information regarding Water Gremlin emissions of TCE. No appraisal was done after the TCE emission became public.

"The plaintiff provides only a generalization of how an average home in the area may have been affected by the perceptions associated with Water Gremlin's TCE emissions," Judge Castro said. "It is unknown why the plaintiff did not conduct discovery specific to his property."

The judge asked about this at an Oct. 20 hearing with Sharot's counsel. His attorneys insisted they were unable to do so due to the 90-day timeline.

The judge wasn't buying it. "The court is not persuaded, and finds the 90-

Daily gratitude ’VE BEEN TRYING to wrap my arms around the American holiday of Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for: our nation’s freedoms, a free enterprise system, law and order, advanced medical care, and the list goes on and on.

We are privileged to be living on the Earth within the Universe that God has created. The earth has an amazing ability to adapt and regenerate. The earth provides energy, food, and habitat which are all renewable and available in seasons.

I continue to be thankful for the Jews who have preserved God’s revelation in His words to us. Further, I’m thankful to the Catholics and their 14 Apocalyptic books.

I’m thankful for the New Testament along with numerous spiritual letters.

Another amazing gift from God that I’m thankful for is sending His Son, Jesus, to come into the world as a human and to die for us on the cross that we might have resurrection and a new life.

Talking holiday shopping season advice with the U of M

ith Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the horizon, there is a greater push than ever before to shop earlier for the holidays due to the global supply chain issues.

University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management Professor George John, an expert on marketing, talks about what shoppers can expect over the coming weeks.

Q: Deals seem to be starting earlier this year. Is it best for shoppers to take advantage of them now or wait later for the big, traditional shopping days?

The old notion that the deals get worse as the “expiration” date approaches is gone. For the past few years, with all the heavy-duty data analytics being used, it has become a cat and mouse game between companies and customers.

There are not predictable patterns anymore, so my advice is to wait until the

price seems like a good deal for something you want. If so, buy it, and don’t look to see if the price has dropped further after your purchase.

Q: Due to the global supply chain struggles, how big of a concern is low inventory this year?

There will be spot shortages of things, but they will be unpredictable. Retailers have had to make some creative moves to navigate the port bottlenecks, which could impact prices on the consumer end.

Q: Retails sales went up 1.7% in October, what does this suggest about the upcoming shopping season?

There are competing crosscurrents making this hard to predict. On the positive side, households have historically high levels of cash from the government checks during the pandemic and the shutdowns reducing shopping last year. On the other hand, currently, consumer confidence measures are at 10-year lows, most likely due to inflation.

Q: Should shoppers keep the labor shortage in mind when buying online vs. buying at a brick-and-mortar store?

I don’t see a bigger edge for offline or online shopping from the labor shortage.

Labor costs will pinch retailer’s gross margins. We have already seen this impact Walmart’s quarterly margins, according to their latest report.

Q: What’s your main advice for shoppers this holiday season?

There are several things to keep in mind: • Don’t get into too much debt.

• Have fun shopping and buy when you think the price is right.

• Don’t look to see if the price has dropped even more.

• About 30-40% of all gifts are returned, so don’t feel too bad if your nephew or grandchild seems “just OK” with the gift you picked out.

BUSINESS BRIEF Candle company opens this month A “cozy mindset” is the business of Koselig Candle Co., scheduled to open a retail location in White Bear Lake on Black Friday. The small-batch candle company is the creation of co-owners’ Matt Krueger and Blake Anderson, who have been

selling their hand-poured soy candles online and at several retailers up north and in the Twin Cities, including Anchor Coffee.

The name “Koselig,” vaguely translating to “a cozy state of mind,” was inspired

by Anderson's Norwegian

Items featured in the store will include 10 different scented candles in standard 11 oz. black-and-white jars, travel candles, and a special 12-ounce “Ode to Minnesota” candle. A 25-ounce Christmas candle will also soon be released. The store will also sell cards, clothing

Local food shelves to manage county's Food Pack Delivery program The Washington County Food Pack Delivery program has transferred the customer service and system management of the program to a group of local food shelves, including the White Bear Area Food Shelf, Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf, and Valley Outreach.

Free skating for all ages Ramsey County has announced holiday dates for open skate and open hockey at local arenas. Open skating for all ages is available from 2-3 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 26, at Aldrich Arena, 1850 White Bear Ave., Maplewood; from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 27, and noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at TCO Sports Garden, 1490 County Road E East, Vadnais Heights.

Open skating sessions for seniors 55-plus are also available on select Fridays from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Aldrich Arena. Dates are Dec. 3 and 10; Jan. 7, 14 and 21; and Feb. 11 and 25.

Admission to open skate events is free, and skate rental is available at TCO Sports Garden for $10. Skate rental is not available at Aldrich Arena.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF'S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • Residents in the 4500 block of Birch Ridge Road at 1:29 a.m.

Nov. 7 reported a burglary after they heard the sound of an outside window opening downstairs and saw the screen begin to open.

They also observed the shadow of a person outside the glass. When the homeowners turned the light on, they heard someone running away. A search of the area was unsuccessful.

• The Vadnais Heights Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E reported a burglary Nov. 7, during which a cash register drawer was pried open and the cash removed.

The potential suspect identified on video surveillance has been linked to similar previous thefts, most notably the stealing of a cash register drawer from the Freedom Valu Center in Shoreview that same night. The case is under investigation.

• A Red Wing woman was mailed a citation after she was caught shoplifting Nov. 7 from the Vadnais Heights Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E. The woman had concealed items and was in the process of leaving the store without paying when she was prevented from doing so by loss prevention staff. However, she resisted and fled — but not before leaving behind a bag of merchandise. Among the items in the bag the subject left behind was her driver's license, complete with picture that matched her face. Now the shoplifter joins the growing list of known shoplifters on file at the store.

• White Bear Lincoln in the 3400 block of Highway 61 on Nov. 8 reported a vehicle purchased with a check drawn from an inactive account. The vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as stolen, following numerous unsuccessful attempts by the dealership to have the vehicle returned or the check made good.

• A Coon Rapids woman, 26, and a Blaine woman, 26, were both cited for shoplifting from the Vadnais Heights Walmart Nov. 8 after they were observed putting on clothing, concealing items and leaving the store without paying. The two females were cited and released.

• The Vadnais Heights Target in the 900 block of County Road E on Nov. 8 reported Apple products stolen on Oct. 31 and on Nov. 6 by the same suspect. That same suspect has also been implicated in similar thefts in Coon Rapids. The case is under investigation.

• A handgun was reported found Nov. 8 in the Walmart parking lot in the 800 block of County Road E. After the firearm's identification number was run through the NCIC database, it was found to have been stolen on Oct. 9 from a clear purse belonging to a Little Canada woman and left in a shopping cart at that same location.

White Bear Township • A Lino Lakes man reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Honda Accord Nov. 7 while it was

parked in a church parking lot in the 4600 block of Greenhaven Drive.

• A juvenile is suspected of criminal damage to property in the 5900 block of Pintail Lane, following a Nov. 8 report. Camera footage captured a person vandalizing neighborhood properties between Oct. 16 and Nov. 8. Further investigation linked the multiple incidents; after interviews with the suspect and his parents, the case has been referred to the county attorney for review.

• The Holiday gas station in the 5900 block of Highway 61 reported criminal damage to property at 4:41 a.m. Nov. 9 after the car wash payment and entry machine was forcibly removed from its post.

Video review of the incident shows the damage was done shortly before staff arrived on scene. After an area check for the suspect was made, the machine was recovered nearby and returned to gas station staff. The case is under further investigation.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Grant • Houle's Feed Store in the 10000 block of 60th Street N. reported a large, inflated pumpkin, valued at $2,500, stolen from in front of the store at approximately 8:40 p.m. Oct. 25. A dark vehicle was seen on surveillance video.

The case is under investigation.

• An unidentified motorist was arrested at 9:17 p.m. Oct. 30 in the 9000 block of 75th Street N. for DWI, driving after cancellation due to unsafe behavior and misdemeanor giving false information to Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Mahtomedi • A Grove Street resident reported her neighbor for keeping the outside lights on at 3:27 a.m.

Oct. 22 as part of an ongoing issue. When deputies called the complainant back, she said

she didn't want to talk at that time and would call back later. The complainant did call back again, four days later, at 3:09 a.m.

• A Hallam Avenue resident reported cleaning out her rental property after a tenant had vacated it Oct. 24 and finding changes that suggested the possibility of human trafficking.

The landlord was concerned at finding locks changed, such that the downstairs door could only be locked from upstairs and a spare bedroom downstairs that could only be locked from the outside. The complainant also found the remains of a burnt mattress in the backyard.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited Oct. 24 on Hardwood Lane and East Avenue for failure to provide proof of insurance.

• The Mahtomedi School District reported the district's trailer stolen over MEA weekend, Oct. 22-26, from the District Education Center, 1520 Mahtomedi Ave. The trailer's information was dispatched for entry onto the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• A feisty male was arrested at 5:58 p.m. Oct.

While being detained, the male, who was suspected of being intoxicated, kicked at deputies multiple times and landed two kicks on one deputy. He also kicked a corrections officer after arriving at jail.

• A Woodland Court resident on Oct. 26 reported remnants of a Domino's pizza left at his home the previous evening. On the evening of his report, Domino's pasta had been on the menu of the mysterious trespassers. The complainant said he'd be installing a camera.

• A truck driver was cited for littering Oct. 27 on Long Lake Road after deputies on patrol found the vehicle with garbage strewn around it.

Deputies contacted the driver, who admitted to owning the garbage and said he was cleaning out his cab.

• A Hardwood Lane resident on Oct. 30 reported an attempted Amazon scam, in which an unknown caller or emailer asks the potential victim to confirm whether they had ordered a phony package. When a potential victim returns such a phone call, the scammer records an answer to be used for multiple nefarious purposes.

• A Stillwater Road resident on Oct. 30 reported her ex-boyfriend for using her debit card without permission and stealing her vehicle.

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Craig Edmund Vollhaber on November 16, 2021. Craig was 81 years old. Craig was born in St. Paul on June 12, 1940. Craig attended St. Mary of the Lake Elementary School and graduated from Cretin High School where he made many life-long friends. Craig graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University Notre Dame where he also earned a spot on the varsity golf team.

In 1964, Craig married Donna Jean Herbert of White Bear Lake. Together they shared a life full of good friends and loving family. Craig was a long standing member at the White Bear Yacht Club where he won ten golf club championships and held the golf course record for many years. Beyond golf, Craig was an entrepreneur and co-founder of Schwab-Vollhaber, Inc. (now SVL) where he left a great and lasting legacy. Later in life Craig and Donna retired to Jupiter, FL where they were active members at the Jupiter Hills Golf Club. Craig had a commanding presence, a deep faith and a thirst for knowledge. Craig was a private pilot, an avid boater, had a deep appreciation for music and loved gin rummy with his friends. Craig is preceded in death by his parents Edmund and Marceline, sister Rita, and wife Donna. He is survived by his son Todd (Sheila), daughter Vicki (Jim), daughter Mary (Eric), 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Rosie. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 11:00 am at ST. MARY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 4741 Bald Eagle Avenue, White Bear Lake. Annual hunt for invasive species proves successful WHITE BEAR LAKE — A search for starry stonewort at three access points on the lake this summer came up empty.

That's good news from the "lake doctor" regarding that particular invasive species, first confirmed in Minnesota in 2015.

The plant forms dense mats at the surface of the water that interfere with recreationists, overtake habitat and provide unsuitable shelter, food and nesting habitat for native species.

Every year, aquatics specialist Steve McComas, dubbed the "lake doctor," uses a rake and well-trained eye to search for stonewort, which so far has only been found in the metro in Medicine Lake.

The same cannot be said for another nemesis, Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM), which first appeared near a public dock on the west side of White Bear Lake in 1988. Two acres were treated that year.

Historically, control measures show EWM was aggressively treated from 1991 through 1995 but, despite efforts, continued to spread around the 2,428-acre lake. From 1996 to 2008, growth was moderate and treatments were less than 20 acres per year. Then from 2009 through 2021, EWM was more abundant and treatment acreages ramped up again. The

highest number of treated acres was 126 in 2012.

"Growth mimics lake level, so the increase was likely due to low elevations and clearer water," McComas told members of the White Bear Lake Conservation District (WBLCD) at its Nov. 16 meeting.

This year, 15 areas were recommended for EWM treatment,

totaling 50.5 acres.

With help from lake resident and WBLCD board member Mike Parenteau in early July, McComas sampled 780 sites around the lake to find the hot spots. "Abundance was greater compared to 2020, and milfoil was widely distributed," he reported.

Moderate growth can easily lead to

heavy growth, so areas with the potential to propagate were targeted for treatment in 2021.

At the suggestion of the pair, the herbicide applicator split the lake in half and used two different products to avoid buildup of resistance in the plants.

The east side of the lake received trichlopyr and the west side, liquid 2,4D on July 15.

In a follow-up survey Aug. 27, they discovered "very few red dots," meaning treatment was effective, McComas said. "There was hardly any nuisance EWM found."

Water quality is excellent in White Bear Lake, noted the

aquatic scientist. Clear water also means more native plant growth, he added. Asked about the potential for toxic bluegreen algae, McComas said White Bear Lake has a low concentration of phosphorus and is not at risk.

District considers ordinance changes WHITE BEAR LAKE — Concerns over enforcement of dock length in Commercial Bay are being addressed by the lake conservation district.

Board Chair Bryan DeSmet said a meeting with the city raised issues as to how length will be determined to confirm if the 300 feet allowed is exceeded.

The district's ordinance states that length of the authorized dock use area extends 300 feet, not dock length, he told the board at its Nov. 16 meeting. Starting point for a measurement was another concern. Should it be the ordinary high water (OHW) mark? That issue is not stated in the ordinance.

DeSmet said the board must decide on what the protocol will be to measure dock length, as well as what action will be taken if a

marina owner is out of compliance.

Thanksgiving travel expected to rebound A strong rebound in holiday travel is expected this Thanksgiving. The Auto Club Group predicts that 53.4 million Americans will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, up 13% from 2020. This brings travel volumes within 5% of pre-pandemic levels for the 2019 holiday.

The West North Central census region, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and four other states, will see the greatest share of its population traveling. Nearly one in every five people (19.6%) from the region are expected to travel during the holiday period. Nationally, 16.2% of the population is expected to travel.

“It’s beginning to look more like a normal holiday travel season, compared to what we saw last year,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA. “Now that U.S. borders are open, vaccinations are readily available and new health and safety guidelines are in place, travel is once again high on the list for Americans who are ready to reunite with their loved ones for the holidays.”

shortage, which impacted automakers. As the number of travelers continues to grow, it’s important to reserve rental cars as early as possible.

Gas prices surged in October and are likely to remain elevated through the holiday season. The average price for gasoline in Minnesota is currently $3.18 per gallon and $3.19 per gallon in Iowa.

Thanksgiving gas prices haven’t been that high since 2013.

The state average was $1.95 per gallon in Minnesota and $1.98 during last year’s holiday (Nov. 26), which was the lowest it had been since 2008.

In 2019, on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28), the price per gallon was $2.46 in Minnesota.

“After a rough travel year in 2020, it appears higher gas prices are not deterring people from returning to the road for Thanksgiving,” said Meredith Mitts, public affairs specialist for AAA Minnesota-Iowa. “As it appears these high gas prices will hang around through the holidays, it’s likely travelers will need to budget more for gasoline and less on things like shopping, lodging and dining out.”

Press Advertising Manager Patty Steele has her own holiday lights tradition to uphold. “We go out and look at the Christmas lights every Christmas Eve. It’s a fun memory to go out with a group of people,” Steele said.

For those looking to do more than just beautify their lawn during the darker months, some holiday lights displays require a true engineer to design and execute some of the displays exhibited last year.

“A few homes over the years have had just magnificent displays. There are two that stand out to me on Bald Eagle Lake,” Johnson recalled. “It’s like having Disney in our own backyard. The garage is lit up, and the house. There are different scenes as you drive by, and you’ll want to pay attention to the upstairs window because there’s something special there.”

Last year’s 20 submissions exceeded expectations, and this year Press Publications hopes to see another huge turnout.

Council sends developer back to drawing board — again

The Vadnais Heights City Council is still hung up on trees — or a lack of them — at the Sono Reserve at Hwy. 96 and McMenemy Road. Council members voted once again at their Nov. 16 meeting to table the development agreement with At Home Apartments and send the developer back to the drawing board.

The original plans called for a 3-foot berm around the property to screen the apartments from the homes across the street. However, the developer found there was not enough room between the

building and the sidewalk to construct the berm. They proposed to screen the building with Tannenbaum pines, with Matador maples as accents.

This proposal did not sit well with Council Member Greg Urban, who had stated flatly at the previous council meeting that he had promised his constituents berms and he wanted to see berms. He remained firm on the issue.

Mayor Heidi Gunderson had also supported the berms at the Nov. 3 council meeting, but she said she could see now that they would not fit. She noted the elevation of the townhomes

and said, “I’m not sure berms would offer that much screening. However, that is what we asked for and what we expected.” She voiced skepticism that the trees At Home proposed to plant were big enough to provide an effective screen. She wondered if there were some easily removable shrubs that could be planted between the pines until the trees became big enough. “In the long run, this is going to be better,” she said, “but for me to approve this, there’s going to have to be some understory plantings.” Council Member Eric Goebel echoed her concerns.

Council Member Steve Rogers asked if a fence could be erected until the pines matured, or larger varieties of trees could be planted.

Council members ultimately decided they weren’t ready to take a vote on the matter.

After saying, “We know we need to get this right,” the developer agreed to return to the council with another landscaping proposal.

Zephyrs clip Cooper, advance to state finals The Mahtomedi Zephyrs are headed for the state championship game in Class 5A after defeating Robbinsdale Cooper 34-7 in the semifinals Friday at US Bank Stadium. The Zephyrs (10-2) will face Mankato West or Rogers in the finals next Saturday at 4 p.m.

Joey Heinsch made it 34-0 with field goals of 34 and 38 yards, and all his kickoffs were touchbacks. The Zephyrs defense stymied a team that was averaging 34 points. Ethan Loss and Jake Larson also had interceptions. Cooper (9-3) got a late touchdown after the Zephyrs sent in the backups.

Bear goalie Mayo Marston stopped 39 shots, but gave up goals to Ava Johansson, Anna Scherling and McKenna Sandberg. The Bears are 1-1. Rogers is 2-0.

Eckerle heads awards for White Bear girls soccer White Bear Lake girls soccer had five allconference selections and one all-state pick, Lauren Eckerle, after a 12-5-1 season in which they were conference and section runners-up.

Eckerle, senior midfielder, picked up her fourth all-conference award, and was named to

the coaches association Class 3A all-state first team, and to the StarTribune all-metro second team. She made the coaches all-state second team as a junior.

Also named to all-SEC were seniors Alexis Smith (midfield), Chloe Simanek (midfield), Nicole Moore (forward) and freshman Jenna

Maloy (midfielder).

Getting honorable mentions were junior Sydney Johnson (midfielder), sophomore Gabby Hofeld (defense) and freshman Abby O’Brien (defense).

The Bears were 7-11 in conference and runner-up to state champion Stillwater in both conference and

section. They outscored opponents 57-26.

Top scorers were Eckerle (12 goals, 10 assists, 22 points) and Maloy (13-5-18). Next were Smith (7-3-10), Moore (5-4-9) and sophomore Cami Bachmeier (4-3-7).

Sharing goalie duties were senior Addie Bachmeier (1.18 goalsagainst-average, .727 save percentage) and sophomore Autumn Maki (1.50 and .766).

Team awards went to Maloy (Most Valuable Player), Eckerle (offensive player), O’Brien (defensive player), Addie Bachmeier (most improved), Becca Smith (top rookie), and Simanek (hustle). Named captains for next year were Hofeld, Johnson and Emma Merriman.

The Bears received the academic Gold Award (team GPA above 3.75).

Bear boys soccer awards listed; Rogers is MVP White Bear Lake boys soccer had one all-state selection, Gavin Rogers, and four all-conference picks after an 8-4-3 season overall, 5-2-2 in the Suburban East.

Rogers, senior forward who scored 10 of the team’s 27 goals, was named to the coaches’ association’s Class 3A allstate second team. He got the Bears’ Most Valuable Player award.

Joining him on the all-SEC list were Nick O’Brien, senior defender; Joe Wallek, senior midfielder; and Eli Treichel, junior defender.

Honorable mentions went to Kyle Christensen, sophomore goalie; Porter Drost, junior midfielder; Eli Simanek, sophomore defender; and Snow Ball, senior forward. Other team awards went to O’Brien (Bear Award), Simanek (top rookie), and Ball and Simanek (most improved).

Bear tennis awards, leaders listed The White Bear Lake girls tennis had two players named all-conference: seventhgrader Lucy Saari and freshman Tally Domschot. Getting honorable mentions were seniors Maggie Blanding and Joey Sunder.

Blanding was named team MVP. Saari got the

Athena Award. Saari was 14-1, mostly at 4-singles and 3-doubles. Domschot was 14-3 and Sunder 13-3, both at 2- and 3-doubles.

Blanding was 9-8, mostly at 2-singles and 1-doubles.

The team’s top player, junior Alexina Erickson, was 4-13, mostly at 1-singles. The Bears had a 9-7 record.

Bear volleyball awards, leaders listed Annika Olsen, junior setter, was White Bear Lake’s lone all-Suburban East Conference pick in volleyball. Olsen led the Bears with 515 assists and 38 aces. Getting honorable mentions were Sammie Steffens, senior outside hitter; Ali Schroeder, senior libero; and Blessing Adebisi, junior middle hitter. Team awards went to Schroeder (MVP), Adebisi (most improved) and senior defensive specialist Ella Sagness (Spirit). Steffens led with 206 kills and 483 servereceives. Schroeder had the most digs, 243, and Adebisi the most blocks, 51. The Bears were 7-15 overall and 2-7 in conference.

Thousand-yard fullback heads 8 Bears on all-SEC

Anthony Lewis-Royal was as hard to photograph as he was to tackle. There were no glamorous photo ops of this guy sprinting in an open field like most star ball-carriers. The Bears fullback was only seen barging through defenders, head down, ball clamped tightly, pushing the pile forward.

That’s how the 5-foot-6, 210-pound senior piled up 1,008 yards in 2021, seldom an easy yard among them. Most thousand-yard rushers have several 30-, 40-, 50-runs. Lewis-Royal’s longest of the season was 22 yards. But on 220 carries, he was always moving forward. He never lost a yard, and he never fumbled the ball, either.

Told that he’s like a human bowling ball out there, he chuckled, “Yes, that’s what a lot of people tell me.”

Lewis-Royal scored 122 points, the fourth-best total in Bear history, on 20 touchdowns (19 rushing, one receiving) and one two-point run. He is the program’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Jessiah Majest in 2015.

Coach Ryan Bartlett said his fullback had “an unbelievable season” that will be long-remembered. “With all those carries, he never sat out a practice or game with any injuries. He is one of the toughest kids I've coached. He is one the best teammates I have been around as well.”

Lewis-Royal, who mainly pumps iron the rest of the year, intends to play college football; he doesn’t yet know where.

Also named all-Suburban East Conference were seniors Matt Sloan (linebacker, halfback), Jeremiah Peterson (tackle), Zachary Peterson (defensive end), and Tyler Anderson (center); and juniors Rayshaun Brakes (receiver, running back, kick returns), Tolu Oyekunle (linebacker), and Chris Heim (linebacker).

Getting honorable mentions were seniors Nick Svir (tight end) and Theron Cartier (tackle); and

juniors Connor Gerrell (quarterback), Nick Asper (defensive end), and Zach Bohrod (guard).

Sloan was named MVP on defense, where his contributions included 10 tackles behind the line for 50 yards in losses. He was the third-leading rusher as well, with 39 carries for 245 yards and one score.

Special teams MVP is senior Wally Venter, chosen for his strong leg and amazing accuracy in placing kickoffs and punts, Bartlett said. Venter arrived in August from Cape Town, South Africa, where he was in rugby, water polo, field hockey and track. He knew nothing about football but decided to give it a try. For the first half of the season, he used the drop-kick on kickoffs, a holdover from his rugby days.

Other awards went to Heim (Will to Win), Ernad Ikanovic (most improved), Isaac Debilzan (Brian Engen Award), and David Love and Luke Calbrieth (scout team offense and defense).

Top receivers were senior Alex Lockwood with 29 catches for 401 yards and three touchdowns, Brakes with 13 for 237 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Vatel Henderson with 24 for 223 yards.

Brakes also carried 54 times for 343 yards and five touchdowns, and had a kick return touchdown, averaging 25.6 yards on 11 attempts. His 48 points ranked second on the team.

Michael McCormack, senior placekicker, tallied 21 points on extra points. Lockwood had 18 points. Michael Delaney, junior safety, had two defensive touchdowns for 12 points.

Oyekunle made seven tacklesfor-loss for 36 yards, Heim six for 26 yards, Domarion Pollard four for 21 yards, Zachary Pratt four for 12 yards and Lewis-Royal three for 18 yards. (The team does not keep overall tackle statistics).

Zephyr seventh-grader Abigail Wright was section champion in the 100 freestyle. Her time was 53.77 seconds, a school record.

Skylar Gillow-Clowser, senior, placed fifth in the butterfly but qualified by standard with 59.72. In the 500 freestyle, Gillow-Clowser was fifth in 5:19.41 and junior Sydney Armstrong sixth in 5:22.83, both qualifying by standard.

Two Zephyr relays placed second to qualify — the 200 freestyle team of senior Elizabeth Hansen, junior Ella Mattson, Wright and senior Adriel Showers and Wright (1:40.59), and the 400 freestyle team of Armstrong, Gillow-Clowser, Showers and Wright (3:41.86). Both were school records.

Also reaching the section finals were Wright, fourth in 50 freestyle (24.99); Showers, fourth in 100 freestyle (55.06) and sixth in 50 freestyle (25.09); Mattson, sixth in individual medley (2:18.01) and eighth in butterfly (1:02.47); and sophomore Emmerson Buckley, fifth in backstroke (1:02.38).

Champ Zephyrs have 3 players on coaches’ all-state Mahtomedi’s state Class 2A championship girls soccer team had three players named all-state and five on all-conference.

The coaches association Class 3A all-state team included Zephyr senior forward Audrey Barry and junior forward Katelyn Beulke to the first team, and senior midfielder Cambelle Waldspurger to the second team.

Named to all-Metro East Conference were Barry, Beulke, Waldspurger, and junior midfielders Lily Lindquist and Anabel Hillstrom. Leading in goals were Beulke with 20, Barry with 18 and Waldspurger with 13.

Honorable mentions went to Paige Janssen, senior goalie; Claire Faulkner, sophomore defender; and Delaney Sellman, senior defender.

Team awards, voted by teammates, went to Savanna Stockness, best defender; Kate Holst, best attitude; Waldspurger, best effort; and Kaila Och, most improved. Voted next year’s captains were Lindquist, Beulke and Hillstrom.

Burglary call leads to school lockdown

November lived up to its reputation as one of our cloudiest months. The first week of the month, sunshine was plentiful but clouds moved in on November 10 and persisted through this past Sunday. It’s been a windy month as well as the battle of changing seasons with colder air keeping warmer air at bay. Last weeks gust of over 40 mph were certainly noticeable and won’t be missed. We now begin the coldest stretch of the year. My outlook doesn’t look bleak but calls for warmer than normal temperatures overall for the next six weeks. White Bear Lake drowning details released The man who drowned on White Bear Lake Aug. 20 has been identified as John Sanders of Brooklyn Park. The incident has been ruled an accidental drowning.

According to a report obtained by the Press from the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, Sanders and three co-workers had rented a 22-foot pontoon boat from Tally's Dockside. While the group was swimming, Sanders became distressed and went underwater.

The others were unable to locate him.

The Ramsey County Sheriff, White Bear Lake Fire Department and Washington County Sheriff searched the area by boat, and dive teams from Ramsey County Sheriff and Washington County Sheriff located and recovered Sanders in 8 feet of water.

Medics attempted CPR; he was transported by ambulance to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As previously reported by the Press, the area of the lake the drowning occurred is known to have weeds, but it is unknown whether that was a contributing factor. The man was not wearing a life jacket.

Mahtomedi High School, Mahtomedi Middle School and Wildwood Elementary were briefly locked down midday Thursday due to an incident in a neighboring residential area.

According to the Washington County Sheriff, a burglary was interrupted on Jamaca Avenue in the city of Grant. Two separate K-9 tracks were needed after the suspects fled on foot. The combination of an alarm system, a headsup neighbor and quick response by a deputy helped to aid in the apprehension of the suspects, who were taken into custody. No one was injured during the incident.

hree is a lucky number in fairy tales, and no one knows it better than the Anderson brothers—a trio of 10th grade triplets who all had roles in White Bear Lake’s high school musical “Into the Woods.”

Spencer Anderson brought his talents to the stage last year in the White Bear production of “Songs for a New World,” and was joined this year by his brothers Simon and Sam. “Into the Woods” interweaves the stories of characters from classic fairy tales. Sam played a member of the fairy tale chorus, while Spencer played the role of Jack, and Simon played the magical cow from the story of “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

In theater, a triple threat refers to a performer who is standout in singing, acting and dancing. The Anderson brothers have always had a deep love of singing, but were excited to explore the other skills they needed to bring “Into the Woods” to life on stage.

The brothers have been singing together since they were in kindergarten, often at St. Andrews Lutheran Church and later, in high school choir. But all of them had to expand on their skills by learning complex choreography and acting techniques for the show.

Simon’s role as the cow Milky White came with particular challenges. His costume was a full-body suit acquired from a Broadway production of the show. The costume required him to spend most of the show bent over, with low visibility.

“I have to trust other people to put me where I have to be,” he said.

In the role of Jack, Spencer was one of the

actors who interacted with Milky White the most.

“I’m Jack, so Simon is my cow,” Spencer said. “I’m always hugging him and moving him around stage. It’s fun to be interacting with your siblings on stage.”

The three worked together to rehearse lines and choreography at home.

“It helps a ton with practicing lines and choreography—you can do it as a group,” Spencer said. “Some kinds have to go home and practice by themselves. One of the three of us can figure out what we have to do. It helps to lean on each other. We all have different strengths. Leaning on each other is how we get it done.”

“Into the Woods” is a complicated show. On the surface, it’s filled with magic beans and princesses in sparkly dresses, but the heart of the story is filled with unresolved questions about morality and the nature of getting what we want. The show also features a challenging musical score by Stephen Sondheim.

“The hardest aspect is how song-heavy it is” Spencer said. “You’re relying on all the cast members on stage for your cues. It brings everybody together when you have to rely on each other like that.”

The brothers agreed that being able to spend time learning and performing with classmates has been a valuable experience in light of the challenges of COVID-19.

“We can be closer together, have a good time, we get to eat together and do fun stuff like that,” Sam said. “In the musical, the togetherness and community of the whole group is just amazing.”

NEIGHBORHOOD STUDY PRESENTS GRAND VISION OF ARTS DISTRICT FUTURE

edestrian-friendly streets, new storefronts on the west side of Highway 61, and connections with the Bruce Vento Trail and Rush Line are only a few of the numerous possibilities for the future of White Bear Lake’s burgeoning Arts District.

The planners behind the Arts, Culture, and Education Area Study (ACE) recently shared some of its findings on the neighborhood that stretches between Bald Eagle Ave. and Highway 61. This informationgathering mission was a joint effort between the City of White Bear Lake, the White Bear Lake School District, the White Bear Center for the Arts, Hanifl Performing Arts Center, and Ramsey County.

The study was conducted by HKGi Planning, a planning and landscape architecture firm. Over the course of a year, planners talked with local residents and stakeholders to get the full picture of what the future of the arts district could look like.

The study does not provide any specific recommendations but is instead an overview of potential development opportunities. Each of the partners, as well as other organizations and members of the community, will be able to use these observations as they plan the future of the arts district.

The study focused on four areas of potential development: Creating safer accessibility and circulation, developing a sense of identity with signature design elements,

rethinking land use limitations in the area, and establishing an organizational framework to manage events, publicity, and partnerships.

Some of the ideas included developing streets to slow traffic and create usable spaces for events and gatherings. Other suggestions included developing a district branding effort through clear signage and creating an artistin-residence program focused on placemaking.

Pedestrian access was one of the biggest points of interest. The arts district verges on Highway 61, at a point where serious pedestrian accidents have occurred in the past.

Development of this area would take that safety into consideration,

as well as creating walkable areas on the smaller side streets adjacent to the arts buildings and high school.

“My hope is that there will be a meeting of the partners to talk about what to do next,” said study

facilitator Rita Trapp. “I think the city is committed to using the information from this as foundation when they do upcoming studies that they know will happen.”
