Attempt to pause Purple Line fails

WHITE BEAR LAKE — An effort to formally ask the Metropolitan Council to "pause" all planning for the Purple Line, formerly known as Rush Line, failed last week.

Council Member Bill Walsh introduced the resolution Nov. 23 requesting Met Council temporarily stop activity related to the almost half-billion-dollar project until completion of a University of Minnesota study on the pandemic's impact on public transportation.

The 2021 Legislature directed the Department of Transportation to arrange for a study by the U of M's Center for Transportation Studies that looks at COVID-19's impact on ridership numbers, revenue and expenditures and longterm impacts. Results are due to the Legislature

by Feb. 1, 2023.

Walsh told council members all he's asking is to stop the bus rapid transit project until the numbers are available.

"If ridership numbers are there, the project goes forward. If not, it should stop," he said.

Council Member Kevin Edberg asked Walsh what he meant by the word "pause?" Walsh replied, "It means we're listening to the people we represent. Their message is to stop the whole project. This is a compromise."

Edberg, acting as council chair in the absence of the mayor, said he didn't come to the same conclusion. "The state does not give the city authority to pause," he maintained. "This is not our project. We won't do the funding. It ain't our

When it comes to chainsaw carving, wood matters World-class chainsaw artist Aya Blaine is turning an enormous cottonwood into a remarkable piece of art at Cabin 61.

The top of the tree was removed by restaurant owners after a huge branch crashed onto the outdoor deck. Arborists were consulted to see if the decaying tree, appreciated for the shade it provided, could be saved. The answer was no.

Still, owners of the Hoffman Road restaurant, formerly The Little Bar, felt the giant trunk could be turned into a sculpture for the enjoyment of backyard

patrons. So the search was on for an accomplished carver.

They found Blaine online. The fact she was female was a bonus, since the restaurant owners are women.

A contract was struck and the Japanese-born artist threw her nine chainsaws and carving tools into her car and drove to White Bear Lake from upstate New York.

Blaine originally thought the project would take about 10 days. Her stay was extended, however, after she discovered that cottonwood is a challenging tree

to carve. The wood is fibrous and stringy and extremely hard on her chains. "It's very tricky and very tough," said the artist, who has competed in chainsaw carving contests around the world.

Blaine grew up in Osaka, Japan, studying art and design in high school. She started carving 17 years ago in her native country but decided the United States had more demand for her art and moved to Pennsylvania in 2009 with her then-husband, an American, who SEE CHAINSAW CARVING, PAGE 9A

Tree of Light fundraiser continues in its 21st year, sans ceremony

In 2001 the McGlinch family donated a tree to the Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf in remembrance of Michael McGlinch, who passed away the year

before. That tree became the Tree of Light, starting a 21-year-long tradition that honors the memory of loved ones.

This year the Mahtomedi food shelf won’t hold the tree lighting ceremony due to

the ongoing pandemic, but lights will still be available for purchase in support of the food shelf.

And instead of the usual ceremony, the names of those being honored will be printed the White Bear Press. Individuals can see

the Tree of Light, located at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formerly Triangle Park), on their own. The tree will be lit starting Dec. 3.

“It’s a wonderful way to honor or memorialize a loved one, and by doing that, you are supporting the food security in our community. Every dollar raised stays at the food shelf right here in our community,” said Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf coordinator Michelle Stiepan.

The food shelf has served as a muchneeded support system throughout the pandemic, especially as the flow of federal stimulus checks has stopped. November and December are also the months where there is a significant increase in food insecurity.

During these months, the food shelf provides the usual supplemental groceries and also offers gift cards to Cub, Target

and Aldi so clients can shop according to their own food tradition needs.

“Usually our goal is to give one week’s worth of groceries for the family to help them through until their next paycheck,” said Stiepan.

But if food insecurity is running high, individuals can come to the food shelf as much as needed.

“If they have an urgent need, they can use it.

Typically, seniors worry about taking away goods from people who might need it more than they do.

But they’re exactly the people we want to help.

They have medical bills or (are) on a fixed income.

We have the resources.”

Finding meaning

W

hen I was growing up, if you didn’t know the meaning of a word, my dad would tell you to look it up. I suppose he could have just told me and my siblings the meaning of unusual and challenging words, but he chose instead to send us to the source — an extra large unabridged dictionary on the bookshelf. I suspect I was an odd child, but I actually learned to enjoy the process of looking up words and would even linger on the pages and spend time reading the meanings and origins of other words nearby.

The physical dictionary is mostly a thing of the past, as are the serendipitous discoveries that go beyond a specific search, but I still look up a word when I’m not sure about its meaning or context.

Unprecedented is likely one of the words that has been among the most used over the past year and a half. Recently, I was involved in a conversation where the precise meaning of the word precedent was under question.

The topic of the conversation Angle of was what sort of precedent might View be set by the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager in Paul Dols Kenosha, Wisconsin who fatally shot two men and wounded h during d i the protests, civil unrest and another rioting that followed the shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake, by a white police officer. I chose to step back from the discussion because I realized I didn’t know the exact chronology and details of the shootings and also that I only had an intuitive idea of the definition and implications of the word precedent. A story I found that provided the details and timeline of the shootings at the protests in Kenosha also revealed the intense chaos and volatility of the situation. When I looked up the meaning of precedent, I found both general and legal definitions of the word.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, in general terms, precedent is described as something that can be used as a rule or example to be followed in the future. In legal terms precedent is described as a judicial decision that should be followed by a judge when deciding a later similar case. My overall takeaway after reading the definitions and news articles, aside from it’s a confusing mess of a situation, is that I don’t believe this specific court ruling will create an open season on protesters. It could possibly embolden certain individuals, but, in my opinion, they would still have to prove they acted in self defense.

As the holiday season commences this year, I have no intention of initiating potentially volatile conversations at family and social gatherings, but if I’m drawn into a conversation I want to make sure that, at the very least, I have a basic understanding of the subject.

Starting with Thanksgiving, it was my hope that the simplification and coping strategies that were initiated last year out of necessity would provide the opportunity for a reevaluation of priorities and bring us back to the true meaning of the day, which is to express gratitude for what we have and give thanks. Researchers are finding that the expression of gratitude, the word at the heart of the annual gathering, can have positive effects on our health and well-being every day.

According to a variety of sources, including an article in Greater Good Magazine by Robert Emmons, the conscious act of practicing gratitude has a number of positive benefits that can help improve both physical and psychological health, enhance empathy, reduce aggression, improve self-esteem and increase mental strength and resilience. Wishing you all the best this holiday season — in whatever ways you choose to fi nd meaning.

Purple Line will strengthen our community, region

I

’ve been blessed to live in the City of White Bear Lake for 46 years. Over the past four decades, our city has grown, changed, and evolved while maintaining the character that makes it special and unique.

I passionately believe that the Purple Line bus rapid transit project fits into that history of progress that aligns with our values.

With all the wonderful qualities our part of the Twin Cities has, we continue to lack high-quality, frequent transit.

Quality transit is something employees and employers, residents, students Movers & and retirees are demanding as they Shakers look at where they want to live, work Victoria and grow their Reinhardt businesses. For our area to stay competitive, we need transportation solutions that will keep us connected to the entire region.

Of course, we all hold differing opinions about how we’d like our city and region to grow – or not. As we continue this conversation, let’s first talk about its goals and merits based on the facts.

Is the project being hurried?

No. Planning work on the Rush Line corridor began more than 20 years ago. There have been countless opportunities for public participation, input and discussion.

The Pre-Project Development study (performed 2014-2017) examined 55 route segments and several types of transit through an extensive public engagement and technical evaluation process in order to determine which route and type of transit would best meet the project’s overall purpose and need.

Over the past three years during the Environmental Analysis Phase, the Purple Line project has

received thousands of comments, and connected with more than 3,400 people. Feedback from the public has influenced key project decisions, such as route, transit type and station locations.

Will the project destroy the Bruce Vento Regional Trail? No. For starters, one of the Purple Line’s many advocates is Susan Vento, widow of Bruce Vento and a frequent trail user. The Purple Line buses will run in their own dedicated lanes on a 6-mile segment through portions of Saint Paul and Maplewood alongside an updated and upgraded Bruce Vento Regional Trail. Ramsey County acquired this former railroad right-of-way in the 1990s for the purpose of future transit use, and signs stating just that have been posted along the trail since 1998. Additionally, Ramsey County is working to extend the Bruce Vento Regional Trail to White Bear Lake.

Will diesel buses cause air or noise pollution? No. Electric, battery-powered buses – not diesel – are planned for use on the Purple Line. In addition, Metro Transit plans to transition the rest of its fleet to being electric in the years ahead.

Combating climate change is critical today and into the future.

Electric buses produce no tailpipe emissions and provide a quieter ride both inside and outside the vehicle than most non-electric cars and trucks. High-quality transit options are an important tool to combat climate change and electric buses will make this line even more effective.

Will the buses cause congestion on Hwy. 61? No. I’m very familiar with traffic congestion in White Bear Lake. Purple Line’s buses will run every 10 or 15 minutes – adding one bus at that frequency to the significant number of vehicles already traveling on Hwy. 61 will have little impact. In fact, it is an increase of only 0.04% to the total vehicles on the road today.

Additionally, having commuters and others on a bus, rather than in

their own cars, relieves congestion and reduces the demand for parking.

Will ridership changes be considered? Yes. The Purple Line project will go through a rigorous assessment before it applies for federal funding. This will include an updated analysis of ridership figures, including an examination of how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted transit use and travel generally. In addition, the Federal Transit Administration looks at the project’s cost-effectiveness, environmental benefits, congestion relief, land use and economic development. The process for meeting these standards is thorough, as competition with planned transit projects across the nation is very high.

Will buses bring crime? No. Research shows that the presence of a transit station does not increase crime. In our region, police ride on buses and patrol transit routes and stations. Drivers serve as eyes and ears on their routes with the ability to instantly radio trouble developing inside or outside buses to dispatch law enforcement if needed. Buses and stations alike are equipped with cameras, lighting, alarms and other safety and security features.

Those of us who have worked on this project for many years welcome feedback. But let’s be sure that we’re all working from actual, documented facts. Ask questions rather than accepting the halftruths and falsehoods that often spread through social media.

Ultimately, I believe that once the Purple Line meets the rigorous Federal Transit Administration requirements and is operational, it will be an important part of strengthening our community for years to come. Your continued input is welcome as we work to make the Purple Line a successful transportation option for connecting our region.

Brayden would do best in a two-parent household that can provide him with lots of patience, structure and routine.

Charter school expands to meet student needs Level Up Academy, a tuition-free charter school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade, will soon break ground on a 15,000-square-foot addition to its facility on County Road E in White Bear Lake.

The current building, which is 26,000 square feet in size, is equipped with seven classrooms, two special education classrooms, a STEAM lab, a multipurpose room, two community spaces, a health office, a conference room, a staff workroom and administrative offices. Planned

improvements will add 15,470 square feet and include renovations to existing classrooms, the addition of two building wings and a two-story gymnasium. Level-Up Academy has partnered with JB Vang Partners, Pope Architects and Rochon Corporation to complete the project.

facility, which does not have room to take current preschoolers into the kindergarten program.

“Until a permanent campus is built, the existing building on the Hugo property will serve as a temporary campus that allows Liberty to continue enrollment growth without having to turn students away,” said Hagstrom. “Having access to the Hugo campus will provide the muchneeded additional space to not only accept that new enrollment but also move us closer toward our goal of establishing a permanent facility.”

Initial plans include moving the pre-K through second grade programs to the existing Hugo campus at the start of the 2022 school year, which will allow for the addition of a third section at each of those grade levels.

Liberty anticipates it will take three to five years to establish a permanent location to accommodate the entire pre-K through 12th grade program.

“God has blessed us with this incredible opportunity,” said Hagstrom. “And after looking at multiple scenarios, we determined this to be the most natural fit for the fastest implementation of the permanent campus.”

Local private school purchases new facility It appears Liberty Classical Academy, a private Christian school operating in White Bear Lake since 2003 and currently housed at St. Pius X Church, has purchased the former Withrow Elementary School in Hugo.

The Stillwater School Board approved a purchase agreement for the Withrow property at its Nov. 4 board meeting. Withrow Elementary has been vacant since 2017, when the Stillwater School District consolidated its facilities. The sale has not yet been finalized.

In a YouTube video featuring Liberty Classical Academy Headmaster Rebekah Hagstrom that was sent to families and community members, the site was not mentioned by name but referred to as the “Hugo Campus.”

Hagstrom said in the video that the school has been seeking a solution to accommodate growth since February.

With the help of an anonymous donor, Liberty was able to purchase the property in cash, with exclusive rights for the purchase of up to 65 adjacent acres.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Dellwood • A male was arrested at 12:32 p.m. Nov. 1 in the area of Ideal Avenue N. and Dellwood Road N. on assault charges.

• An unidentified motorist was arrested at 2:26 a.m. Nov. 6 in the area of Dellwood Avenue and Dellwood Road N. on a gross misdemeanor warrant.

Grant • A resident in the 11000 block of 60th Street N. reported theft and damage to property Nov. 2.

• Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a traffic stop for speeding 68 mph in a 55 mph zone at 7:53 a.m. Nov. 6 in the area of 75th Street N. and Kimbro Avenue

N. They conducted another traffic stop at 11:39 a.m. that same morning on Lake Elmo Avenue N. at 75th Street N. for passing on the shoulder.

Mahtomedi • An unknown motorist was cited for driving after suspension at 3:00 a.m. Oct. 31 near Century College on Century Avenue.

• Deputies initiated a traffic stop for stop sign violation on Wildwood Road and Birchwood Road at 3:35 a.m. Oct. 31.

• A male, described by deputies as “juvenile male No. 2,” was cited at 4:18 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Holiday Stationstore on Stillwater Road for driving an unregistered vehicle, after deputies on parked patrol at the gas station observed three juvenile males driving into the parking lot on minibikes.

“Juvenile male No. 2” was known to deputies as having

been told before that he was not allowed to drive his minibike on the roadway. The other two juveniles were issued verbal warnings, and one of them fell off his minibike when entering the gas station lot. None of the minibikes were registered or contained proper safety equipment.

• A driver of undisclosed identity was arrested on a warrant for DWI Oct. 31 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue N. following an accident with no injuries, after which the driver left the scene in a state of obvious intoxication. Deputies located the suspect driving nearby.

• The owners of a business in the 1000 block of Wildwood Road at 5:24 a.m. Nov. 1 reported unwanted people sleeping in the women's bathroom while the business was closed.

• Management at Picadilly Square on Mahtomedi Avenue reported theft from a drop box

overnight Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen off an RV parked on Long Lake Road overnight Oct. 31-Nov. 1. A second catalytic converter theft was reported at 6:12 p.m.

Nov. 1, also on Long Lake Road.

• A male exposing himself on Mahtomedi Avenue was reported at 11:17 a.m. Nov. 1.

Deputies were unable to locate the male.

• A Stillwater Road resident reported her retaining wall damaged earlier in the day Nov. 2 after a motorist apparently backed into it and knocked some of the blocks off.

• A cashier at a business in the 1000 block of Wildwood Road on Nov. 3 reported an unwanted male who would not leave the business when asked to do so. However, he did leave after the complainant called for deputies, who said

they would be standing by to “trespass” the male if needed.

• The Holiday station on Stillwater Road reported a gas drive-off Nov. 6.

Pine Springs • An unidentified motorist was arrested for DWI at 1:00 a.m.

Oct. 31 on Highway 36 after he was pulled over for speeding and failure to stay within a single lane. During the traffic stop, the driver showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking alcohol. After performing poorly on the field sobriety tests, the driver was taken to jail, where a breath test revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.12.

Willernie • A Kimberly Road resident reported a vehicle damaged during an attempted break-in Nov. 2.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF'S REPORTS

Vadnais Heights • A Cape Coral, Florida, man reported multiple tools stolen from his vehicle at 5:46 p.m. Nov. 12 while he was shopping inside the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E. A window of his vehicle was broken in to gain access.

• After a White Bear Lake woman reported her vehicle stolen from the intersection of Koehler Road and Edgerton Street at 11:46 Nov. 13, it was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and recovered at 11:00 p.m. that same day in St. Paul. The vehicle was then towed to the impound lot for processing.

• A Minneapolis man, 21, of no known

address, was arrested at 2:37 p.m. Nov. 13 in the 3800 block of McMenemy Street for driving without a license after he was reported for pulling into a driveway in a large commercial vehicle.

• An East Bethel man reported a male on a small scooter for spray-painting graffiti onto a sound barrier wall along eastbound Highway 96 and McMenemy Street at 3:52 p.m. Nov. 13. When the complainant stopped to videorecord the activity, the tagger fled into the nearby woods.

• A St. Paul woman, 18, will be mailed a citation for theft of service after Walmart employees in the 800 block of County Road E at 4:03 p.m. Nov. 13 reported that she picked up her vehicle after the service center was closed and didn't pay for the repairs performed on it.

• A St. Paul woman at 7:52 p.m. Nov. 13

reported her boyfriend for giving her a fraudulent check that was used in the 900 block of County Road E. When the victim cashed the check at her bank, the bank deducted that amount from her account. The case is under investigation.

• A St. Paul woman, 26, was arrested on two active warrants out of Dakota and Anoka counties at 8:51 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a computer check on her record when she was detained for shoplifting. Her current theft activity has been added to the list of charges against her.

White Bear Township • A motor vehicle stolen from a White Bear Lake woman on Nov. 10 was recovered by deputies at 12:47 p.m.

Nov. 11 when they were called to the 4100 block of Parkway Ponds Lane to check on the welfare of an unresponsive woman inside the vehicle. When deputies ran the plate number on the vehicle, they discovered it belonged to the White Bear Lake woman.

• A business in the 1100 block of County Road J at 7:47 p.m. Nov. 11 reported disorderly conduct by an unwanted person at the business making staff uncomfortable. Deputies responded by having a chat with the unruly, unwanted person and facilitating his departure from the scene.

• Deputies recovered an abandoned vehicle in a parking lot of a townhouse complex in the 1200 block of Greenbriar Court at 5:27 p.m. Nov. 12 after determining it didn't belong to anyone living in the complex. It was towed to the impound lot.

gig. The state Legislature put the determination of regional transit in a body that is not us. They (Met Council) have the budgets and authority and guidance. I don’t think we have authority to make these determinations.”

Council voted 2-2 on the resolution to “pause” the project, which meant it did not pass. Walsh and member Steve Engstran voted yes, Edberg and Doug Biehn voted no. Member Dan Jones was absent.

Edberg admitted after the vote that he was “conflicted.”

“I’m not going to support this resolution tonight. The primary reason is this is not our gig. I do have

expectations for the Met Council,” Edberg added. “I would be amendable to a future motion that identifies certain standards for Met Council to uphold.”

After the vote, Biehn explained that he was casting a vote for what he believes “will make the city’s future vibrant and bright. We don’t want to be only city without access to mass transit,” he said.

In a memo prior to the meeting, staff reminded council that the Met Council is already obligated under the rules of the Federal Transit Authority to again assess ridership prior to submitting a final application for funding, which under the current project timeline would not occur until after the projected

completion of the study.

Also attached to the council packet was an emailed letter dated Nov. 18 from Purple Line Partners, a group of East Metro area businesses, health care organizations and nonprofits that formed last month to support the project.

The alliance aims to advocate and inform about the benefits of fast, frequent and reliable all-day bus rapid transit service along the 15mile Metro Purple Line corridor.

Partners include the White Bear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul Area Chamber, Minnesota Hmong Chamber of Commerce, Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation,

HealthPartners and Maplewood Mall. The letter was signed by Shannon Watson, vice president of public affairs for the St. Paul Area Chamber, and Brian McClung, Park Street Public.

The letter writers said they believe this type of modern transit service “will be an amenity that employees, commuters and residents will utilize for many decades. We ask that the city of White Bear Lake continue to be a partner in this important work.”

As a point of interest, Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt, a longtime proponent of Rush Line and former task force chair, named the new Metro line.

Caution vital as open water begins to freeze With a deadly open-water season nearly in the rearview mirror, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that lakes and ponds throughout the state have started to freeze — and that where ice hasn’t formed, the water is dangerously cold. It’s up to all people to choose to stay safe around the water or ice, according to the DNR. Where there is ice, its thickness this time of year is highly variable and subject to the whims of Mother Nature. And where ice hasn’t formed — or where it freezes at night and opens during the day — the water temperature is so low that an unexpected drenching can be deadly.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, it’s vital that parents talk with their kids about staying safe. With a couple days off from school, it’s natural for kids to want to be outside, and water and ice tend to be a natural draw.

Anglers and others who recreate on the ice should stay on shore until there’s at least 4 inches of new, clear ice. Anytime people are on the ice, they should check its thickness every 150 feet. Block urges people to check ice thickness for themselves rather than deciding to walk on the ice based on what they’ve heard or read.

Each year, unexpected falls into cold water lead to serious injury and death. Wearing a life jacket is the best way to avert tragedy, since the initial shock of falling into cold water can incapacitate even strong swimmers. Carrying a good set of ice picks can help a person get out if they fall through the ice, and a cell phone, whistle or other communications device makes it more likely they will be able to call for help.

CHAINSAW CARVING: World-class artist turns tree into sculpture FROM PAGE 1A

was also a chainsaw artist. After a divorce, she relocated to New York.

As people might imagine, the work is difficult. Blaine uses large saws while perched on scaffolding wrapped around the tree trunk. The Cabin 61 cottonwood is at least 20 feet high and one of the tallest projects she’s ever tackled.

Blaine has never been injured doing her craft, but she is sure to wear safety gear from head to toe.

Her consigned sculpture includes an otter on water skis (the owners are members of the Midwest Ski Otters team), a Viking, and Minnesota animals like moose, bear, wolves, loon, bison and owl. She is laboriously carving 360 degrees around the tree to create the complex mixture of wildlife, while using animal pictures

taped to the scaffolding to serve as models.

Cabin 61 finance manager Tom Prentice said Blaine was hired after viewing her impressive portfolio online. “We wanted to cast a net outside Minnesota for someone who was winning competitions,” he explained as to how they found her.

Both Blaine and Prentice thought the work would be done before Thanksgiving. The tough wood and inclement weather stretched that timeline out a bit. The restaurant is paying her a $10,000 stipend.

Prentice knew they were taking a chance with someone they didn’t know, but he had a good feeling about Blaine. And pictures of her work spoke for themselves. He noted the bar and grill, purchased in 2017, is also exceeding expectations. “It’s become successful now despite our

best efforts,” he quipped. “Sales are five times what they were four years ago when we bought it.”

Blaine has appeared in a Toyota commercial during the Super Bowl and commercials for Stihl chainsaws.

She is also a member of The Chainsaw Chix, a traveling women’s team that does carving demos at competitions.

Blaine may be biased, but she thinks women use more feeling in their carving. “Lady carvers are more expressive,” she maintained. “They add more character to their work.”

Gable Pines resident builds memory village to fight pandemic boredom

After months of isolation due to the pandemic, Margaret Christenson tapped into her own creativity and, in turn, tapped into some of her fondest memories.

A retired occupational therapist, Christenson knows the importance of staying busy. In those weeks of isolation at Gable Pines Assisted Living in Vadnais Heights, Christenson got busy transforming a 4-footby-4-foot space in the corner of her apartment into a village of her most precious memories.

Her idea to start building dioramas stemmed from a trip to Bachman’s she took with her daughter a couple of years ago when fairy gardens were trending.

A few years later, Christenson’s first diorama was created after she noticed a vacant 18-inch indentation in the walls of Gable Pines.

Christenson built the foundation of a fairy garden so others could join in and make houses.

The fairy garden is now redesigned every couple

of months to fit with the theme of each season.

“It’s a great place for people to go and take their grandkids and our dear friends in memory care to come up and look at it,” she said.

That first fairy garden ended up serving as much of the groundwork that prepared Christenson for her magnum opus of corner creations: her memory village.

“My husband and I did long-distance biking in Ireland and New Zealand, and I have some wonderful memories, so I thought maybe I can create something that’ll help me remember those places I have biked,” says Christenson.

Christenson began constructing hotels, castles and barns from her memories out of pink insulation foam and at times even reused household materials like cardboard coffee sleeves.

The focal point of the memory village is a large hill right in the middle of a field in Alsace in France where Christenson remembers a beautiful castle she and her husband biked to on one of their trips.

Her memory village is an amalgamation of her adventures around the world, but she kept to her roots by constructing a replica of her childhood home outside of Seattle by using just a photo and her memory.

Christenson first got into biking while growing up in the Skagit Valley in Washington.

“We had that perfectly flat area. Young children could go anywhere and not be concerned. It was a wonderful time to grow up. Biking was the most natural thing.”

Christenson took a break from biking when she learned to drive in high school. College took her on a new adventure, where she ended up in Minnesota and attended Bethel University for a year. There, she met the man who would become her husband and who shared her love of biking. After eventually graduating from the University of Minnesota, Christenson started her career as an occupational therapist. It wasn’t until later in her career that Christenson and her husband decided they needed a break, so they

embarked on their biking trips.

The two visited Ireland, New Zealand, France and many other places that are now displayed in Christenson’s memory village.

Christenson has revisited her memory village to update it for wintertime, and plans to use some of the figures

in her Christmas card; otherwise, Christenson doesn't know what is next for her village.

She hopes that the residents at Gable Pines will keep up their fairy garden to maintain some of its excitement.

Christenson also hopes other facilities will adopt their own fairy gardens as a way to keep residents

busy and use their skills for something creative.

“I think it would be a positive thing for other places,” said Christenson.

In the meantime, Christenson still has her memory village on display in her room to remind her of all her adventures and her creative spirit.

Joan Adell Michaud Born 10-10-1932. Wife, Mother, and Servant of the Lord, died on 11-162021 after a brief illness.

She was a life long resident of White Bear Lake. Joan is preceded in death by husband, Edward. Survived by Mark (Marlys), Denise Simon (Larry), Mathew, Luke (Lori) and Ann Axell (John), 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Joan was a pillar of her community, and a constant, faith filled example for her family. She will be deeply missed. Caroline May (Bartels) Foss passed away peacefully on Nov. 13, surrounded by her family, and under the gentle care of hospice and memory unit staff at Paramount Senior Living in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Carrie was born on May 29, 1934 in Deer Creek Township, the daughter of Henry August and Martha Anna (Wulf) Bartels. This humble farm girl was valedictorian of her high school class, going on to graduate from the University of Minnesota and Swedish Hospital School of Nursing, first becoming licensed as a Registered Nurse and then earning a Master’s of Public Health. She worked in a number of capacities in the field, including as a hospital, in-home hospice, and school nurse. She was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by Swedish in 2011.

Carrie’s most longstanding and intensive nursing duties, however, were practiced with unwavering love and devotion in her own home in White Bear Lake.

Two of her children lived with chronic illnesses from an early age and her husband had kidney disease and, later, heart disease. The managing of daily medications and shuttling to countless doctor appointments was a daunting enough task on its own, but she also helped see them through dozens of hospitalizations, as well as cancer treatments, dialysis and kidney transplants, heart surgeries, and neurosurgeries.

Thanks to her their lives were not only longer than anyone could have expected but, even more importantly, happy and fulfilling until their deaths between 2000 and 2010.

Carrie aptly has been described as a rock and a saint by many, but she above all will be remembered for her joy of life and her natural affability. She loved conversation of all sorts and befriended most everyone she met in a matter of minutes. She remained intellectually curious even under the demands of caregiving, while drawing special pleasure from the natural world. Carrie was a well-known and beloved member of the White Bear community for 50 years, eventually moving to Virginia for support as she aged and to be close to her remaining immediate family.

She is survived by her son Christofer Craig Foss and daughter-in-law Mara Noelle Scanlon, as well as her beloved grandchildren Kirby and J. Scanlon Foss. She also leaves behind a brother, Jerry Bartels; sisters-in-law Aletha, Gladys, and Marcia Bartels; numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces; and countless friends. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Dean Foss, sons Daniel Donald and Eric Edward Foss, brothers Leroy and Larry Bartels, and sister and brother-in-law Dolores and Dave Boe. Suggested donations are the Don Foss Memorial Scholarship/White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation and the Employee Appreciation Fund/ Paramount Senior Living of Fredericksburg.

Gadbois, Stanley P., 72, of White Bear Lake passed away on November 25, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; son, Jeffrey; parents, Rene and Magdalena; and brothers, Rene Jr. and Jerry. He is survived by his siblings; (sister-in-law) Jean; Tom (Lorraine), Richard (Margaret), Therese (Barry) White, James, Leo, and Celine (Richard) Dempich; and also, many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and close friends. Stanley was a tough guy with an artist heart who found the Irony in everything. He had a love for the outdoors and his family is at peace knowing he is now soaring with the eagles he loved. Joyce L. “Bunny” Eastlund December 12, 1925 – November 25, 2021 Omaha, NE- Joyce L. “Bunny” Eastlund, age 95, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, November 25th at Parson’s House Assisted Living. She was born December 12, 1925, in Minneapolis, MN to William Johnson and Laura (nee Sletten) Johnson. Joyce was raised in the Lake Nokomis neighborhood of Minneapolis. She married Lowell J. Eastlund at Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church in 1948. They raised three sons: John, Joseph and James in Vadnais Heights, MN. In 1967, the family moved to Overland Park, KS. Lowell passed in 1978, but Joyce continued living in Kansas until 1996. Then she went to live with her son, John, first in Las Vegas, NV and then Omaha when he was transferred there. Joyce will be buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery alongside her husband, Lowell.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father and mother; sister, Beverly; brother, William “Buddy”; husband, Lowell; and sons, Joseph and James. Survivors include son, John; grandchildren: John, Rachael and Elijah; brother-in-law, Gene; and nieces and nephew: Suzanne, Gregory, Kari and Lori.

to remove and use all plants, trees, ground cover, and natural growth now existing, or later planted or grown; to permanently grade or alter the grade of the land, and to remove and use all earth and other material not reasonably necessary for lateral and subjacent support; to limit or allow the location, number, and related characteristics of access from the remainder property to the public right-of-way; to store equipment or supplies; to access, both ingress and egress, from the most reasonably convenient rights-of-way; to remove any physical improvements or flxtures that interfere with its use as a public right-of-way; and to exclude from the area any use or improvement that con‡icts with the rights conveyed herein. Reasonable and convenient access to the remainder will be maintained.

IV. In the attached Exhibit B, where a ”temporary easement‘ is identifled, the interests being conveyed include all rights of possession and use, for a limited period of time, necessary or incidental to support the related construction project, including the right: to stage equipment or supplies; to access other portions of the construction project; to make minimal permanent alterations to the grade of the land that do not substantially impact the remainder; to remove (and restore in substantially similar condition) any plants, ground cover, or physical improvements; to access, both ingress and egress, from the most reasonably convenient rights-of-way; and to install any temporary improvements. Reasonable and convenient access to the remainder will be maintained. The term of the temporary easement shall be for 24 months beginning on March 1, 2022 and ending February 29, 2024, or for 24 months from the date when granted pursuant to order of the district court, whichever is later.

In addition, the interests identifled in this paragraph include the option of the Petitioner to extend the temporary easement for up to two six-month terms to be held consecutive to the original term and to each other at the monthly rate determined for the initial term.

V. Personal property not speciflcally identifled as being acquired, including, but not limited to, fencing, irrigation systems, pavement, curbing, or signage, or trees, shrubs, plants, or ground covering, is not included in this petition, except to the extent the above rights provide for the removal, replacement, use, or repair of such property. It is the intention of the Petitioner to address any claim of damage related to personal property destroyed, removed, lost, or otherwise damaged, but not repaired or replaced in substantially similar condition, in accordance with applicable relocation laws, including Minn. Stat. § 117.50 - .56 or the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970, as amended, and any regulations adopted pursuant thereto.

VI. That the purpose for which said interests in land described in this Petition are being acquired is for the widening, addition to and realignment of South Shore Boulevard for the purpose of public travel and transportation and related uses.

VII. The taking in this matter is to obtain rights sufflcient to support the construction and maintenance of a public highway, including related facilities.

Unless speciflcally identifled, pre-existing utility, pipeline, access, and other easements or interests shall remain in full force and effect and shall only be impaired to the extent necessary for the County of Ramsey to construct and maintain a public highway, and related uses, on the land being acquired.

For any parcel being taken by this condemnation proceeding that is subject to pre-existing utility, pipeline, access, or other easements or interests, the County of Ramsey shall work as needed with the easement holder to adjust facilities to accommodate the construction or to adjust construction plans to minimize related damages.

VIII. It is the intent of the Petitioner that reasonable access, in at least one direction, to the main thoroughfare will be maintained for any remaining interest of a property from which a permanent or temporary easement is taken.

IX. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, should tests or evaluations undertaken by or on behalf of the County of Ramsey indicate the possible presence of pollutants, contaminants, or hazardous substances on any of the property described in this Petition, the County of Ramsey reserves the right to defer effecting the transfer of the interest to any of the property as described herein for a reasonable time until the County of Ramsey can evaluate whether it wishes to proceed with the taking, abandon these proceedings and dismiss the Petition as to said property, or otherwise respond to such information.

Further, the County of Ramsey reserves the right to recover costs of cleanup and testing and all other damages resulting from the presence of pollutants, contaminates, or hazardous substances on the property described herein, from all potentially responsible parties in a separate legal action.

X. That a party wishing to challenge the public use or public purpose, necessity, or authority for a taking must appear at the hearing of this Court at which the County of Ramsey, as Petitioner, shall present this Petition to the Court and state the objection or must appeal within 60 days of a Court order.

XI. That the land in these proceedings to be taken are situated in Ramsey County, Minnesota and are more particularly described in attached Exhibit B which is made a part hereof. The names of all persons appearing of record or known to the County of Ramsey to be the owners of said land, or interested therein, including all whom the County of Ramsey has been able by investigation and inquiry to discover, together with the nature of the ownership of each, as nearly as can be ascertained, are set forth on attached Exhibit B. XII. The County of Ramsey hereby moves the court for an order transferring title and possession of the parcels described herein prior to flling of an award by the court appointed commissioners, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes § 117.042.

WHEREFORE, the County of Ramsey prays for an order of this Court as follows: 1. Adjudging that said taking is for a public purpose, is necessary, and is authorized by law; and 2. EXHIBIT A BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION B2021-040 Meeting Date: 2/16/2021 Sponsor: Public Works Title: 2021 - 2025 Transportation Improvement Program File Number: 2021-037 Background and Rationale: In order to qualify for state and federal funding and to proceed with construction projects, the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners must approve the Public Works 5-year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP is a planning document and funding estimates identifled in the TIP are re‡ected in the County÷s Capital Improvements Program Budget. Similar programs havebeen developed each year since 1988.

The Public Works Department, annually, prepares the TIP using a collaborative process whereby the County solicits projects and input from area municipalities. Project inclusion in the TIP is based on a cooperative dialogue with municipal and state partners, along with technical analysis and consideration of funding opportunities. While funding limits will continue to challenge program delivery, communication and engagement with municipal partners ensures local needs and prioritiesare examined and addressed to the extent possible.

Projects included in the TIP are also looked at through the lens of the Ramsey County All Abilities Transportation Network (AATN) policy, which prioritizes the most vulnerable users (i.e. pedestrians, bicyclists, people with disabilities) flrst.

The design, construction and right of way costs identifled in the TIP are estimates based on best practices in the industry. The funding landscape for transportation projects can be volatile and the ultimate delivery of the TIP is dependent on future funding levels. Partnering on projects with area communities, bordering counties, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and other state agencies will continue to be a critical way for Ramsey County to get the most from our available funds.

Recommendation: The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners resolved to: 1. Adopt the 2021-2025 Public Works Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

2. Authorize the County Engineer to prepare plans and agreements for all projects identifled in theTIP, and to issue solicitations in accordance with County policies and procedures and the Minnesota Department of Transportation÷s list of ”Pre-Qualifled Vendors by Work Type‘.

3. Authorize the County Engineer to execute Right of Way Plats and Certiflcate of Surveys for Highway projects that require the determination of existing right of way for the delineation and /oracquisition of property, for planning studies or disposition of excess County property.

4. Matschke sign comes down after 70-plus years

Bill Matschke, seated, and his brother, John, are retiring from the insurance business started by their father in 1947.

This framed photo of the fire that destroyed the White Bear Lumber Company in the early ‘60s hangs in Bill’s office. Julian Matschke leased space from the company for his agency, located on the corner of Fifth and Banning Avenue. The brothers recall how people rushed to his aid and carried items to safety as flames engulfed the building.

Like a good neighbor, the Matschke brothers have been helping people for decades.

In their case, that help has come in the way of reliable insurance for home, health and auto.

The years have gone fast, said Bill, who is retiring after 50 years of selling State Farm policies. His younger brother John logged 46 years in the business started by their father Julian in 1947 in the back of Benny’s Barbershop.

The brothers grew up near Bald Eagle Lake with three older sisters on property that had been in the family for generations. Both graduated from White Bear Lake High School, Bill in ‘66 and John in ‘70.

After graduation, Bill joined the Navy and served a tour in Vietnam. John played for Herb Brooks and the Golden Gophers after high school. He was a member of the ‘74 team that won the national championship.

A hockey family, Matschke Insurance sponsored many youth sports teams in its day. Julian played professional hockey for the St. Paul Saints in the ‘30s before he was drafted into World War II. The family patriarch, who also coached the White Bear Flyers hockey team, retired from the business in 1990 and died in 1993 at age 83.

Their father helped pave the way for his sons’ continued success in the business, breeding loyalty among policyholders, noted a 1997 White Bear Press article marking 50 years. When he

retired, Julian noted that his sons followed his same philosophy. “They work hard to help other people get what they have coming and they never quit,” he said.

Neither brother wanted much fanfare to celebrate their retirement. “We don’t want notoriety, we’re just going to be gone,” said Bill, who preferred as short a goodbye as possible. John’s family, however, felt the two deserved recognition for their involvement in the community and the years of service they’ve provided. They would also like to thank their loyal staff.

Nov. 30 was their last day. In their exit interview, the brothers said this: “We just want to thank our policy holders for their trust and confidence all these years.”

So what does retirement hold? Fishing is in Bill’s future. John says he and his wife plan to travel more. He’ll also continue to play tennis and golf.

Each has four children. Bill has six grandchildren and two great; John has three grandkids.

A State Farm agency will continue with a new owner in the same building on Seventh Street and Hwy. 61, except the familiar sign will no longer say Matschke.

Windstream participates in a government benefit program called Lifeline to make residential telephone or broadband service more affordable to eligible low-income individuals and families.

Eligible customers are those that meet eligibility standards as defined by the FCC and state commission. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may also qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain federal eligibility programs. The program offers a monthly discount limited to one discount per household and can either be applied to wireline or wireless. If applied to wireline the discount can be applied to either your voice or broadband service. The monthly discount is up to $5.25 per month for voice only service or up to $9.25 per month for broadband service.

Scam targets Facebook Marketplace users Yet another scam is making its rounds on social media, and this time it’s targeting Facebook Marketplace users. The new scam has been coined the Google Voice verification scam. It targets sellers on Facebook by obtaining their cell phone numbers to create a number on Google Voice, a telephone

For the broadband Lifeline discount to apply, a customer must subscribe to a Windstream service that meets the minimum standard requirements as defined by the FCC. For the purposes of the Lifeline program a household is defined as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Lifeline service is not transferable, and only eligible consumers may enroll in the program. Consumers who willfully make false statements to obtain Lifeline telephone or broadband service can be punished by fine or imprisonment and can be barred from the program. Coach says — “Our boys team graduated 10 seniors, including our top five section skiers, so there is a bit of work to do. We have a strong group of returning and new athletes from middle school up to seniors. The girls team is definitely positioned to move up the conference and section ranks, having lost only two seniors from last season, and being led by a group who have been skiing three or four years. The goal for both boys and girls is to see vast improvement in technique, strength, endurance, intensity and racing know-how. This will position us to do well this season and going forward. Both are young teams with a bright future.”

Local pups train to be therapy dogs at Animal Angels

Animal Angels. Many of the handlers have had more than one dog go through the program just for the joy it brings both the handlers and the dogs to take care of their community.

“I was trying to figure out how to give back to the community. Now that my own mom is in memory care, it means even more to give back. I work full time and have a family, and I still have time for service. It’s been a great combination,” says Tami Zappa.

It doesn’t matter what kind of dog it is. Any dog can be a therapy dog. What makes these pups special is the way they serve as a canine icebreaker to comfort those in need.

“There are a lot of sounds and even smells that can be distracting for the dogs,” Monroe explained, as she squeezed an aspirator through the group of dogs.

The dogs and their handlers also practice how to approach someone who is getting a visit from a therapy dog. First, the handler begins by asking for permission to come and visit. The conversation then turns to the person receiving the visit, all while the dogs learn to greet that person on their level, whether the person is sitting in a wheelchair or lying in bed.

The dogs are gearing up for their test on Dec. 11, which will give them eligibility for approval of personal liability insurance for visiting. If the dogs pass, Therapy Dogs International will allow them to be registered.

One of the class’s handlers, Joanne Nicols, explained that the terms “therapy dog” and “service dog” can often get confused.

“Service dogs tend to learn specific skills for one person. For example, a dog that works with someone who diabetic is trained to alert a person to take their medication.”

The therapy dogs at Animal Angels are taught to go up to a variety of people with less-specialized needs.

While the dogs need their approval, their handlers also require completion of a variety of background checks, including for liability insurance, as well as credit checks when they begin as volunteers.

Much of the time, the real learning is happening with the human students in the class. The handlers learn how to teach their dogs to approach new people and ignore distractions that may be in some of the facilities they visit.

At St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi, therapy dogs in training and their handlers are taught to put their best paw forward and use their skills to help those who most need the unconditional love of a dog.

Kathryn Monroe first began leading Animal Angels in 2000. After moving to Mahtomedi, she became involved at St. Andrew’s and expressed her dream of operating a dog therapy class. Ever since, Monroe has been holding 10- to 12-week classes to train willing dogs and handlers.

With a background in adult education with an emphasis in human and animal relationships, Monroe knows that benefit of spending time with a dog is nothing new.

“The idea of animals as healers goes back to Hippocrates, whose name means horsepower. In the 1940s the Red Cross had animals to help men when they returned from war, and in 1965 we got statistical evidence that petting a dog can reduce blood pressure and put brainwaves in a meditative state,” says Monroe.

According to Monroe, it's the historically invisible people of our world who can benefit most from the healing nature of animals.

Once the therapy dogs get approval to visit, they typically will visit memory care units, schools, veterans homes and assisted living and hospice facilities.

But before they are ready to visit those in need, the dogs and their handlers need to jump through a few hoops.

“Ethan Loss, we had to cover him,” said Helget, when asked what concerned him most about Mahtomedi.

Forced fumbles: Hull 2 Zephyrs’ semifinal win over Cooper When Mahtomedi defeated Robbinsdale Cooper 33-7 in the state Class 5A semifinals on Nov. 19, Cooper was missing its star quarterback.

Joe Russell, who fired 28 touchdown passes this season, had a leg injury late in Cooper’s quarterfinal win, and their coaches found out two days before the game that he would not be cleared to play.

Mahtomedi coaches didn’t find that out until another player took the first snap.

Taking Russell’s place was Jaxon Howard (son of coach Willie Howard), an outstanding defensive end and tight end prospect, who had not played quarterback since eighth grade.

Howard completed eight of 18 passes for 86 yards with three interceptions. Gunnar Woods returned one 68 yards for a touchdown.

Ethan Loss and Jake Larson had the others.

Mahtomedi’s first touchdown was a one-yard run by quarterback Charles Brandt (not by Nicholas Beiersdorf as noted in last week’s article.)

“Sky has had a great career. Her hard work has produced results,” coach Mike Goldman said. “I could always count on her giving me 100 percent in practice and every meet.” Clowser placed ninth in the 500 freestyle with a Zephyr record of 5:15.40 and 12th in the butterfly with 1:00. She helped the 400 free relay team place 10th in a school record 3:41.86. She’s also on the record board in the medley relay (1:52.35).

Given the excellence of Mahtomedi’s autumn sports season, it was appropriate for the campaign to end with the Zephyr football team playing the Prep Bowl.

That the Zephyrs lost to unbeaten, topranked Mankato West 24-10 in the Class 5A finals Saturday hardly dampened the good feelings about the fall season. They finished as state runner-up and added to the school’s laurels.

The gridders were the third Zephyr team to play at U.S. Bank Stadium in November.

The girls soccer team was state champion. The boys soccer team placed third.

“We went to the soccer tournament.

We have lots of friends on the soccer teams,” said Jordan Hull, the football team’s rushing leader, after their state quarterfinal win. “We were proud of them.

Now we’re going, too.”

Both Zephyr cross country teams placed 12th at state, with the girls winning their section and the boys placing second.

The tennis team was ranked No. 5 in the state, finishing section runner-up behind the third-place team in the state (Mounds View).

The volleyball team had its first winning season (15-14) since 2016 and lost a close section finals match. The Zephyr swimmers were section runners-up and scored in four events at the state meet last week.

At the Prep Bowl, Mankato West capped a 13-0 season, with their renowned defensive unit controlling the game, except for one amazing Mahtomedi drive.

“That was a heck of a team we just played,”

Zephyr coach Dave Muetzel said. “Mankato West is very well coached. They have no weaknesses. But I could not be prouder of the effort the kids put in.”

Mankato West scored off a Zephyr fumble early in the game and led throughout. After Mahtomedi trimmed a 14-0 deficit to 14-10, the Scarlets quickly pulled away.

“Relentless pursuit of excellence. That was our motto this year,” said West coach J.J. Helget.

“Mahtomedi was a very good football team, and they pushed us. But we pushed through like we have all year.”

Mahtomedi, unranked with two mid-season losses to strong teams, finished 10-3 after their fourth Prep Bowl appearance (the last one in 2008), of which they have won one.

The Zephyrs beat No. 6 Rochester Mayo 42-20 and No. 9 Robbinsdale Cooper 33-7 in the first two rounds at state.

Mahtomedi was outgained by only six yards (265 to 259) and had a four-to-one turnover advantage, with an interception and three fumble recoveries.

But the West defense, which yielded only nine touchdowns in 13 games, with seven shutouts, ruled the day.

The Scarlets limited Hull, Mahtomedi’s 1,100-yard rusher, to 49 yards in 16 carries, stopping him on every attempt except one, a 27-yard gain. “We’ve run the gamut facing good running backs,” said Helget, listing several they’ve shut down this season. “Any time a team wants to run against us, we’ll take that any day.” Hull enjoyed the challenge though. “It’s fun to play against a big, physical team like that,” he said.

Girls basketball: Bears fall to Tonka in opener, beat Orono White Bear Lake opened the season at a showcase hosted by Hamline University with a humbling loss to No. 3 ranked Minnetonka, 54-25, on Friday evening but got into the win column on Saturday beating Orono 61-51. Senior guard Lauren Eckerle led the Bears with nine points in the Minnetonka game and poured in 26 points against Orono, going 10-for-10 on free shots.

Neveah Hughes added 12 points. The Bears were 20-for-28 at the line. Lauren Knudson netted 18 points and Evie Komplelien 12 for Orono.

Mahtomedi swimmers score in 4 events at state The Mahtomedi Zephyrs scored in four events in the state Class A swimming meet and placed 15th in team standings Nov. 19-20 at the University of Minnesota.

“The state team performed well. Both relays and all but one individual qualified for the finals,” coach Mike Goldman said.

Skylar Gillow Clowser placed ninth in the 500 freestyle in 5:15.40 (school record) and 12th in the butterfly with 1:00.00. She improved on her 5:19.41 section time in the 500. Her best butterfly time (59.72) came in the section.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Wright, Clowser, Sydney Armstrong, and Adriel Showers placed 10th with 3:41.86 (school record). Their section time was 3:41.86.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Elizabeth Hanson, Ella Mattson, Wright, and Showers placed 10th with 1:40.67, moving up from 13th in prelims with 1:41.67. Their section time was 1:40.59.

Bowing out were Hansen, Clowser and Showers.

“I am going to miss our senior state participants,” Goldman said.

Girls basketball: Zephyrs beat Sauk Centre, lose to Grand Rapids The Mahtomedi Zephyrs were 1-1 against a pair of Top Ten ranked teams to open the season in a showcase at St. Thomas Academy.

The Zephyrs, ranked No. 16 in Class 3A, won 60-57 over Sauk Centre (No. 5 in Class 2A) on Friday evening and lost 58-51 to Grand Rapids (No. 9 in Class 3A) on Saturday.

Against Sauk Centre, the Zephyrs made 17 steals, converting several into breakaway baskets, and shot 7-for-7 on free throws. Ella Kletti netted 14 points, Savanna Stockness 13, Sonya Potthoff 10 and Mya Wilson nine.

Stockness had five steals and seven rebounds, and Kletti five steals. For Sauk Centre, Jenna Gapinski-Vogt sank 18 points and Cierra Kortan 16.

Against Grand Rapids, it went the other way as the Zephyrs gave up 17 steals. Jessika Lofstrom made six steals while scoring 20 points for the Thunderhawks. Taryn Hamling added 17 points. For the Zephyrs, Centers netted 15 points, Potthoff and Kletti 11 each and Anna Greene eight.

Girls hockey: Zephyrs split on trip north The Mahtomedi Zephyrs split two games in a trip to northern Minnesota on Nov. 19-20 and have a 2-3 record overall. The Zephyrs beat Rock Ridge 6-2 in Eveleth with goals by Olivia Bengtson, Karen Miller, Maddie McMahon, Rachel Fussy, Aspen Tillges and Fussy again.

They lost to Hibbing-Chisholm 6-4, getting goals by Miller (two), Aynslea Ulmschmid and Fussy. Mound-Westonka beat the Zephyrs 6-2 there on Nov. 23. Miller and Rylee Bogren had the goals. Kaitlyn Galeazzi faced 52 shots and stopped 46 against M-W.
