2021 LEGISLATIVE PREVIEW

BY DEBRA NEUTKENS STAFF WRITER

This is the opening week of the ninetysecond session of the Minnesota Legislature. Members take oaths of office, elect leaders and officers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many priorities. Learn local lawmakers’ priorities in Press Publication’s Legislative Preview inside.

‘Tis the season for continuing good works by local community members. A couple that wishes to remain anonymous donated more than $250,000 for a new program that helps both White Bear restaurant owners and residents impacted by the pandemic. Called More Than Meals, the program will provide up to 2,000 restaurant-prepared meals each week for up to three months. It could go longer. “The idea is to pay it forward and help local businesses survive the winter,” said Sharon Hanifl-Lee, board chair of Children’s Performing Arts and an Arts District committee member who directed the program’s holiday launch. Five local restaurants were selected for the inaugural phase: Donatelli’s, EAT!, Keys Cafe, Rudy’s Redeye Grill and Washington Square. Those restaurants were chosen because they have given back to the arts, explained Hanifl-Lee. “They have been first to donate when we (arts organizations) asked. Now it’s our turn to help them.” The program could expand to more restaurants and businesses as time goes on, she added. The Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation manages the funding and has contracted with NewTrax to distribute meals. Foundation Chair Carol McFarlane said the nonprofit is a perfect vehicle to receive tax-deductible donations to help businesses.

Chef shares love for food with fundraising Longtime Rotarian Ken Galloway has been heading up the BEAR’ly Open every winter since 2008. He created the primary fundraiser for the White Bear Lake Area Food Shelf and wants people to know the event is on despite the pandemic. It almost didn’t happen. Months back an announcement was made that the golf tourney on ice was canceled. A few enthusiastic Rotarians stepped up to make it happen, and so it is Feb. 5 and 6. “The BEAR’ly Open is just different this year,” Galloway said. “There will be no congregating and no sponsor tents. There will be an online auction but no

dance. We will create the course on White Bear Lake like in the past with 10-minute increments between golfers to make it safe.” The event has raised $200,000 in 14 years, which in food shelf terms is equivalent to an astounding $1.6 million worth of food. “The community has always been extremely generous,” Galloway said. “We want people to keep supporting the cause. The hunger problem just continues to get worse.” An online auction (more on that to come) already has what Galloway describes as “fabulous stuff.” One of the bid items is an in-home dining experience SEE FOODIE, PAGE 9
