“Unbelievably smooth.” That's how iceboat enthusiast Mike Parenteau describes White Bear Lake.

The perfect ice conditions this winter are rare.

“Iceboaters can wait a decade for a season like this one,” he said.

A lake homeowner, Parenteau has been iceboating since childhood. “My dad made me an iceboat when I was 10 years old,” he recalled. “He stuck me in and gave me a push and that was it.”

The experience of iceboating is thrilling, Parenteau stated. “It's an experience you wouldn't expect. It's

cold, but you dress for the cold. And it's not dangerous. We don't go if it's dangerous.”

Yes, he's gone through the ice a few times, but the last incident was in 1979. “I don't want to do that anymore,” admitted the sailor.

The iceboat aficionado has more boats than he cares to admit, but two are special favorites.

His latest acquisition is a “pleasure” model built in 1890, probably the oldest iceboat in Minnesota. Parenteau bought the restoration project with fellow sailors Dale Deters and Bill Reed. The trio dubbed the wooden craft the “Commodore.” They

MAHTOMEDI — Unfunded segments of the 10-mile Lake Links Trail could get a jump start with draft legislation soon to be introduced.

Lake Links Association Co-chair Steve Wolgamot is helping area legislators draft language for unfinished sections of the trail around White Bear Lake. The “ask” is directed at the Metropolitan Council, as before. The amount is preliminary, but like last year, $4.1 million in grant money is the likely request, as follows: • $3.22 million to the city of Dellwood.

Elements of the trail, generally parallel to and within 300 feet of the right of way along Trunk Highway (TH) 244, may include elevated walkways and separated trails.

• $380,000 to the city of White Bear Lake for a trail parallel to and within 200 feet of right of way of TH96.

• $380,000 to White Bear Township for a trail parallel to and within 200 feet of TH96.

• $120,000 to the city of Birchwood Village for a trail parallel to and within 200 feet of right of way of Hall Avenue.

Tech-free lunch day launches at Mahtomedi Middle School

For better or for worse.

A new rule meant to get kids off their phones and just hang out during lunch began in December at Mahtomedi Middle School.

The idea was fi rst put forth by a parent-teacher organization (PTO).

Parents of incoming sixth-graders asked Principal Mike Neubeck to consider a tech-free day at lunchtime, said parent Julie Bixby. Once a month, lunch hour is tech free.

Bixby has seen the typical lunch hour at the middle school — many students staring at screens. She wants to see them “just be kids, hang out and talk and be social during lunch hour.”

The PTO is not anti-device but just want to see their children learn social skills and interact with those who maybe don't have cell phones, Bixby said. She said her son has a cell phone but never uses it at lunch because he's too busy having fun with friends.

The school's cell phone policy allows students to bring phones to school and use them during lunch.

They must be kept in their lockers from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They cannot be used in class.

“The 25 minutes of cell phone use during the lunch period gives students an opportunity to decompress, check in with families, connect with friends and begin to develop digital skills,” said Neubeck. “We are giving kids ownership to self-manage their technology decisions during

lunch hour and we are ready to support them alongside their families to be good digital citizens.” Students are not allowed to take photos or videos at any time while in school.

The fi rst phone-free lunch was held on a Friday last month. Some students requested it be changed to another day since they are trying to schedule weekend plans with friends on Fridays and need to text their parents, Neubeck said. A techfree Thursday was held earlier this month. The school may try another day of the week in the future.

The students did well and even appreciated doing something different, Neubeck noted. “We told them it is a day to realize just how much they do use their phones,” he said.

“It's a way for us to promote being positive digital citizens.”

Bixby said she hopes the tech-free lunch day can grow into once a week.

Mahtomedi district’s fund balance in critical state

MAHTOMEDI — The district’s general fund balance is expected to be 2.2 percent of expenditures this June.

The district’s policy is to strive to maintain a balance of 8 percent of expenditures. Last June, the fund balance was at 4.5 percent and the school board made significant cuts for this school year, including no principal at Wildwood Elementary.

“It is critical that we do balance (at 8 percent) or have a surplus in 2019-20 in order to stop our decline in our fund balance,” said Director of Business Services Bill Menozzi at a Jan. 10 school board meeting.

Although the levy approved in November will help, budget adjustments will still need to be made, he noted. Classroom supplies, materials and membership dues were not increased for the 2018-2019 school year.

It is expected that the district will have to maintain some cuts in order to get the fund balance back in order. Unless the 8 percent is maintained, no new programs without specific revenue will be added, textbooks and supplies will be frozen and budgets cuts will be made if

needed, according to district policy.

The school board approved a revised budget, almost $1 million short of the preliminary budget, for this school year.

The district plans a preliminary budget in June each year for the next school year but unexpected costs can lead to revisions, said Menozzi. The district typically

approves a revised budget in the winter.

“There are many estimates that go into things like enrollment, staffi ng data, contract settlements and other factors that are not known during the preliminary budget process,” he explained.

The general fund revenue will be about $127,000 less than expected

and expenses about $653,000 more than expected.

“The main reason for the slight decrease in revenue has to do with revised enrollment estimates for the current year and then just a slight decrease in our federal revenue as well, primarily federal special education aid,” he said. The district had fewer students than its goal this school year. It was hoping for 3,288 students but the budget will have to decrease to 3,270 students.

Increases in the general fund were due to wages and benefits, PSEO costs and fi nance and human resources system fees. The district is also doing a planned spend-down of its capital projects levy to help its technology infrastructure in the long term.

The total difference between the preliminary and revised budgets is about $934,000. In addition to the general fund, there are food service, community service, debt services, internal service and trust funds.

The budget is $54.6 million.

The board will begin to discuss next year’s budget in February. The district is hoping the Legislature will increase spending for public schools this session, as that funding has not kept up with inflation.

District secures more land for Hugo school

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The district approved another offer to purchase property in Hugo for a new school.

The 10-acre piece of land is sandwiched between three other parcels for which the district completed purchase agreements last month. The four properties are located on Everton Avenue N. just north of Frenchman Road in western Hugo.

Details of the offer were not released as the purchase agreement was discussed during a closed school board meeting Jan. 14. The total value of the property owned by Laura Syring is listed as $329,600, according to Washington County property records.

The piece of land is the only one with a dwelling on it.

The other pieces of land amount to almost 30 acres, for a total of 40 acres. The two southerly parcels are owned by St. Agnes Church in St. Paul. One is about 17 acres and worth about $256,000, according to county records. The second, a thin strip bordering the first, is half an acre and worth about $7,000. The northerly parcel is owned by Karen Anderson of North Branch. It is 12 acres and worth about $214,000.

The four parcels are currently zoned residential. A proposal for a school on the land has not come before the Hugo City Council.

The district previously reported it is securing land for possible construction of a school due to the growth it has seen in the Hugo area. The type of school has not been decided.

The district's facility committee has been researching building needs since last fall. The committee made up of parents, students, staff and community members will present information on what it believes the district's facility needs are at the board's Jan. 28 workshop meeting, reported Marisa Vette, director of communications and community relations.

Kindergarten through fifth-grade enrollment at Hugo and Oneka elementary schools could nearly double within a decade, according to a recent enrollment projection study. Overall district enrollment could increase from 8,500 last school year to up to 11,000 in a decade.

The district is considering a bond referendum to pay for a new school in Hugo, according to board documents. It plans to reimburse the general fund for the land purchase if the bond referendum passes.

W

ith our schools closed for Martin Luther King Day, what did kids or families do to remember his legacy? This national holiday is to celebrate life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader who helped to end racial segregation and advanced racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s.

One of our friends mentioned doing acts of service – something in line with one of King’s messages that “Life’s most persistent and urgent questions is what are you doing for others?” If taking a day off of work for a service project isn’t possible, maybe families watch a movie together this week about the civil Publisher’s rights era, like “Selma,” “42” or “The Help.” My daughter watched View “To Kill a Mockingbird” last week Carter Johnson in between finals, as her ninthgrade class had read the book earlier in the semester. There are scores of books on the topic appropriate for all ages.

One of our carriers had an opportunity to meet Martin Luther King, Jr. many years ago. He said that King had a gentle handshake for being such a powerful presence. I wonder what Dr. King would say to us today? Would he be pleased with the state of racial equality? Though we no longer have segregated schools or buses, many feel we still have a long way to go to achieve his dream. Racism exists —people are still judged by the color of their skin rather than the content of their character. Often it’s subtle. It is critical for us to review his work and passion for equality, and how we can contribute.

This week I hope our readers can reflect on his life and legacy. Maybe do something you normally wouldn’t do. Talk to your kids about their impression of racism. Or simply make an effort to spread truth, love and peace to all people in your daily interactions, not just one day a year.

Lunar eclipse Sunday evening the lake was lighted by a full moon and perfect for ice skating. While my son and a few friends were out skating, we tracked the beginning of the lunar eclipse. It was the only full lunar eclipse said to happen in 2019, so we gave it our all. With the temperature coming in at 1 degree, it was cold and crisp and we were thankful for no wind. Having a portable heater with us was critical, and every few minutes the boys would take turns standing in front of it to warm up. My wife made a special trip with hot cocoa and marshmallows, which may have been their favorite part of the experience. The boys stayed out on the frozen lake for over an hour. After everyone had gone home, our family took a few more trips outside to glance at the moon. Total eclipse was impressive as it reached a peak around 11:15 p.m. From the solar eclipse and now this lunar eclipse, it has been a great 24 months of celestial activity. Take in the outdoors this new year. Check out the stars and learn some of the constellations. Many local parks offer star watching programs with telescopes. Don’t let the cell phones and video games in your life eclipse what nature has to offer.

Social media wasteland When a stock photo of a brown-colored egg makes a headline with more that 50,024,444 likes on Instagram, beating out Kylie Jenner’s birth announcement, it seems we might have a problem.

Do we really have nothing better to do than try to be part of a world record on social media? I know I can get sucked into some things on social media, but this seemed over the top. It might be good for all of us to step back and evaluate how we spend our time on social media. Stick to posts that are relevant and helpful to your life, or increase your knowledge. Make an effort to avoid topics that are completely trivial or plain dumb. There is a screen time function on phones to monitor and limit usage.

I’m truly worried about our kids, the digital wasteland and mental health.

You also can take general education credits and then transfer to a four-year institution such as the University of Minnesota or St. Thomas University.

Century also excels at offering skilled labor programming. Skilled labor jobs have recently become much more in demand. In fact, many companies across the state report that there are not enough qualified job applicants for open positions. Century offers degrees in automotive service technology, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, solar and renewable energy, and much more.

For high school students thinking about their future, there are many other options for education outside traditional two and fouryear institutions. For example, the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association offers a rigorous apprenticeship program that includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and about 180 hours of related instruction each year.

There is also a new and powerful growing partnership between local public schools and the St. Paul Building and Construction Trades.

The partnership provides summer jobs for young men and women in all communities. These jobs put men and women — typically high school juniors — into local training centers and lets them explore

a variety of trades such as pipe fitting, carpentry, iron working, heat and frost insulating, and more.

High school students also can take advantage of Intermediate School District 916’s excellent Career and Tech Center on the campus of Century College. Visit the websites of area school districts to discover other career and tech program options. The districts’ community education programs are also excellent sources of ideas for furthering your career or increasing your skills. These programs are dedicated to lifelong learning.

There also are many services offered for older workers who want or need a retraining program.

New map shows radon testing hit or miss across state A new online tool should help target efforts to test for radon. The odorless, colorless gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States yet only 1 percent of properties are tested every year. An interactive map from the state Department of Health shows wide variations in testing rates, as well as significant disparities. Testing rates are generally lowest in areas with more household living in poverty. In the seven-county metro, testing rates are lowest in the urban core tracts of Minneapolis and St. Paul and highest in the western suburbs.

Radon occurs naturally in Minnesota soils and enters homes through cracks or openings in walls or foundations. The average radon level in the state is more than three times higher than the U.S. average.

“This map is important because it helps us see where we need to target resources and improve outreach to increase testing,” said Dan Tranter, MDH indoor air supervisor. “This map can also help homeowners and

residents by showing where radon hot spots are—areas where more homes have radon levels above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), the action level to fi x homes.”

According to the Annual Testing Rate map from the Minnesota Public Health Data Access Portal of MDH, there were 79 properties tested annually (2010-2016) for radon per 10,000 housing units. Of these properties tested, 44 percent had elevated radon levels, at or above 4.0 pCi/L. The census tract with the lowest rate of testing had less than one property tested per 10,000 units or .01 percent.

The highest census tract had 321 properties tested annually per 10,000 housing units or 3.21 percent.

Regina E. Sherman, 90, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at Good Samaritan nursing home surrounded by family and friends.

Regina was born Sept. 14, 1928 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Marie and Milo Maule. She met and married the love of her life Edward Sherman Sept. 26, 1946. She and Edward moved to White Bear Lake and built their home while they raised Bill (Sue), Mary (Tom), Nancy (John), Bob (Yoko), Becky, Dave, Larry (Angie) and John who survive her along with 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, and her sisters Marie Castle and Frances Kawamoto.

Regina will be remembered as a loving, caring mother, and a good and funny friend. She loved teaching line dancing.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The owner of the Burger Bar really misses his yeti, which was stolen the night of Jan. 12.

“We’re going to bring him into the bar,” he said. “No, we’re not. You’re going to get us kicked out,” his friends responded. The man can be seen walking off the scene with the yeti. The restaurant was closed. White Bear Bar was open next door.

“We are offering a Burger Bar party if we can get our yeti back and find out

who took it,” said owner Ben Pratt.

The yeti was like the restaurant’s winter mascot and employees took good care of him, Pratt said. The Abominable Snowman had fake fur that needed to be tended. “If it was raining or snowing, we covered him up,” Pratt noted. “Everybody was in tune with the yeti being good.”

• A raccoon found stumbling in the street at Centerville Road and Arcade Street the afternoon of Jan. 11 was transported to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for treatment.

• A catalytic converter was stripped from a vehicle the afternoon of Jan. 12 in the Walmart parking lot. No suspects.

• A fast-moving fugitive was arrested in the 4300 block of Rosebriar Avenue the afternoon of Jan. 19 on five felony warrants issued by Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington counties plus one from Wisconsin. The 46-year-old was accompanied by a 40-year-old rookie female who was wanted on a single warrant out of Dakota County.

• The owner of a building company in the 9000 block of Jeffrey Boulevard reported an employee, 34, 10000 block of 114th Street, for felony theft by fraud. The man is accused of keeping money from customers and using company funds to complete the job.

• A chimney fire was reported Jan. 1 in the 10000 block of 83rd St. N. The homeowners and pets had evacuated.

• A disturbance was reported Dec. 30 in the 11000 block of Julianne Ave. N. A resident admitted being given vodka after 31 days of being sober and requested he be transported to detox. Staff transported him. No other actions were taken.

White Bear Township • All was quiet in the township last week with no reports of thefts, assaults, excessive drinking or inappropriate driving that would interest our readers.

Mahtomedi • A Blaine man, 27, was arrested Dec. 29 on a complaint of violating a domestic abuse no-contact order, a misdemeanor. The complainant, a Mahtomedi woman, 36, said she saw a missed call Dec. 25 from the suspect, who claimed it was his girlfriend who made the call. That woman, 24, from Coon Rapids, told officers she accidentally dialed the number while going through the suspect's phone. The officer planned to discuss the matter with the city attorney.

• A St. Paul woman, 27, was arrested for DWI Jan. 1 after driving her vehicle into a ditch near Triangle Park. A bystander blocked her from re-entering her car. Preliminary breath test (PBT) result was 0.16.

• A White Bear Lake juvenile male, 16, was arrested Jan. 1 on Woodland Drive for felony criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. The female victim was also a White Bear Lake juvenile, 16. No other information was provided.

• Officers arrived on scene Jan. 3 in the 30 block of McGregor Avenue to find a Stillwater woman, 32, and a Stillwater man, 35, in a heated verbal argument.

Neither would agree to leave the other alone or leave and go someplace else. Both pay rent. The woman planned to get a restraining order against the man.

• A welfare check on a 26-year-old woman in a Griffin Court apartment found her barely breathing following a drug overdose. Her 4-year-old child was in the apartment and answered the unlocked door.

The woman was in her bedroom and appeared near death. The deputy revived her with naloxone. Medics took her to the hospital. Social services took her two children.

• Theft from motor vehicle and fourth-degree damage to property was reported Jan. 12 in the 90 block of Mahtomedi Avenue. A Brooklyn Park man, 63, reported his rear driver's side window was smashed and his $70 briefcase stolen sometime after 8 p.m.

A work deposit card and paperwork were the only items in the briefcase. No suspects.

• Theft from motor vehicle and fourth-degree damage to property was again reported Jan. 12 in the 90 block of Mahtomedi Avenue. A St. Paul man, 48, said his front passenger window was broken and his girlfriend's purse stolen. The owner of the purse, a Lake Elmo woman, 52, lost her wallet, bank cards, cell phone and Social Security card. She was advised to cancel her cards immediately, advise that her SS card was stolen and to contact her cell phone provider.

• A suspect described as a short African American male, slender, in his late 20s, came into the Freedom Station Jan. 13 in the 700 block of Stillwater Road and asked for two cartons of Newport cigarettes and Swisher Sweets. When the cashier reached for the Sweets, the man grabbed the cigarettes and ran out the door. The cashier ran out and got the plate number as the suspect left in an older dark blue four-door Chevrolet. During the interview with the officer, dispatch called out that an individual matching the description stole cigarettes at the Freedom station on Hwy. 244/120. The vehicle could not be located.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • Two 19-year-old White Bear Lake women were found drinking alcohol near Highway 96 Jan. 11. Both were cited for underage drinking and released.

• A caller reported a couple arguing and scuffling in a lot in the 4900 block of Highway 61 Jan. 11. Officers found two homeless people living in their van, which had broken down and needs to be repaired.

Both denied any assault and were told to quell their antics.

• Fraudulent purchases totaling

• A 30-year-old driver was arrested for second-degree DWI near Highway 96 and Otter Lake Road Jan. 11.

locations, the amount is essentially $200 per linear foot.

At a Lake Links Association meeting Jan. 14, invited legislators voiced their support of the association's mission to complete the trail.

“This is grassroots involvement at its finest,” Sen. Chuck Wiger told trail proponents. “It's going to happen and it's an honor for us to be messengers.”

The Maplewood senator recalled how he'd been involved with the trail effort 20 years ago and how it was resurrected by the Lake Links Association in 2016.

“I hope people realize the economic benefit this brings to the area,” he said.

Wiger was co-author of a bill last year that allocated $4.022 million in bonding money for design and construction of specific trail sections. Most of the funding, $2.6 million, was earmarked for 1.5 miles of trail improvements along South Shore Boulevard. That work is ongoing as the county continues to study design options. Most popular, according to public input, is a one-way multiuse path similar to Lake Avenue.

Construction is likely to start summer of 2020.

A segment of trail in Mahtomedi, along Birchwood, Wildwood Beach and Briarwood Roads, received $1.4 million in funding in 2018.

Birchwood Road will be a significant expense, noted Wolgamot. Lake Links is working with WSB engineers on a proposed plan to narrow traffic lanes from 12 to 10 feet on the roadway to build an 8- or 10-foot asphalt trail on the east side. A low-sloped curb will allow turtles to cross the trail.

The north shore trail presents some problems, Wolgamot told the group.

the wrong side of the road. There is also a 900-foot stretch with no right of way.

An engineering consultant is being retained to advise on trail possibilities.

White Bear Township and White Bear Lake each received $11,000 last year for preliminary engineering along TH 96.

Like Wiger, Wolgamot is confident

the Lake Links trail will get done. He expects the Mahtomedi part to be done this summer and Dellwood in 2020, dependent on funding.

A Dellwood trail has many different circumstances, continued the co-chairman. At this point, Lake Links is recommending a 10-foot trail along 970 feet of right of way on the lake side from Meadow Lane to Ordway Street made of fiberglass decking. The trail would run along 35 feet of right of way from Peninsula Road to Meadow then cross to the other side of the road going north.

Lake Links is not pursuing a uniform separated trail around the entire lake.

“It will be different in every community,” Wolgamot said. “The objective is to keep people removed from cars. We look forward to a final route that fits the circumstances in each segment and that reflects the character and generosity of the communities, legislators and counties who together make up Lake Links.”

Hearings on the legislation are expected in February and March.

Built 128 years ago by The Erickson Iceboat Corp., a forerunner to Minnetonka Boatworks, the Commodore was sailed on Lake Minnetonka its fi rst 50 years. By then, the boat was in need of tender loving care and purchased by a guy who stuck it in his barn but never got around to restoring it.

There the boat sat for another 50 years until the owner decided he was too old to do anything with it. As the story goes, the owner of Northland Yachts in Excelsior saw an ad in the Minneapolis Star and bought the boat, restoring it in time for the 1991 Minneapolis Boat Show.

Again, the boat fell into disrepair sitting in an outside storage lot until 2016 when Parenteau and his sailing buddies struck a deal to bring the boat to White Bear Lake.

Rotted wood required replacing, but most of the boat is original. An article on the Commodore appeared last year when the boat made its maiden voyage on Bald Eagle Lake.

It's received a few tweaks since then and is now at its permanent home on White Bear Lake.

The timing couldn't have been better. “We are enjoying the best conditions for iceboating you can imagine,” Parenteau iterated. The three men like to take the Commodore and its sister iceboat, “Wrigley,” to the VFW on weekends, even giving rides to curious onlookers.

They always draw a crowd. The trio also restored the 1905 Wrigley, once owned by the family of chewing gum fame.

BOULEVARD TREE TRIMMING TO BEGIN – The Township’s Public Works Department will be pruning boulevard trees during the next few months. Boulevard trees are those typically within 15 feet from the back of the curb/edge of the street. The trees will be pruned to remove branches that hang low over the street surface or the sidewalk/trail including dead or broken branches & in some instances branches may be removed from the side of the tree away from the street in order to maintain the symmetry or balance of the tree’s crown. Parenteau, Reed and Deters also own front-steering Nites, fiberglass iceboats that are real speed demons. The latter two men enjoy racing their Nites at Minnesota and Wisconsin regattas when the ice is good. Lake Pepin is a favorite venue, and lakes in the Madison, Wisconsin, area are home to many competitions. There were rumors that the Nite Nationals could be coming to White Bear Lake, but Parenteau said it's not true. “They prefer to stay around southern Wisconsin,” he said.

According to iceboating.net, the Dutch invented iceboats to move cargo down frozen canals. All it took was a fi sherman who added a

plank to his boat to bring his fi sh to market. Since then, iceboating has traveled from The Netherlands across Europe and to northern North America. Parenteau is just glad the sport landed in his backyard. Hopefully it won't take another 10 years to get a repeat season.

4. Start saving.

Green Card Voices on display The Green Card Youth Voices exhibit will be on display at the White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church, 328 Maple St. in Mahtomedi through January.

The exhibit includes portraits of Twin Cities high school immigrant students, their bios and a QR code, which viewers can scan with their smart device and watch first-person video stories of the students. Green Card Voices is a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization that seeks to elevate the voices of immigrants in the United States. Through

the power of storytelling, Green Card Voices builds bridges between immigrants, non-immigrants and advocates, telling stories that are authentic to the immigrant’s experience and providing a new, more nuanced and personal lens to understand the dialog around immigration.

1944 The local Odd Fellow lodge had its installation of officers on Tuesday night of last week, Jan. 11. Installing new officers were Past Grand F. J. Reif and Grand Marshall T. W. Bacon….The St. Paul field office of the Social Security reported that 1,100 claims for monthly Social Security today repayments under the old-age and survivors’ insurance program had been filed during 1943.

The fact that many elderly citizens who are eligible to file claims are continuing in employment to further the war effort has caused many to postpone filing for the monthly payments to which they are entitled when they are 65….

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Online Rush Line survey ending Jan. 31 People interested in responding to the online Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit survey regarding a downtown station have until end of day, Jan. 31. Next steps include receiving input from the White Bear Lake City Council on the preferred downtown station location.

The Rush Line Policy Advisory Committee will receive an update on the White Bear Lake station at its next meeting scheduled for Jan. 31. “It is unclear whether we would ask them to make a decision on the preferred station location to be studied in the environmental assessment at that meeting or at a subsequent meeting,” added Gitzlaff.

Washington County will receive $35,000 to pay for children’s mental health screening during 2019 after the county board accepted the money Jan. 15 from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Children’s mental health screenings are required by state law. The money provides for mental health screening, assessment and mental health services to children in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. The grant amount varies each year as funds are based on reimbursement for the number of children's mental health screenings completed in the prior year.

Celebrations The Boy Scouts of America has awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to three local Scouts in a ceremony held December 2 at St. Judes of the Lake in Mahtomedi. Scouts Mark Dengler, Luigi Viggiano, and Gavin Zemke are members of Troop 433. All are Seniors at Mahtomedi High School.

For his Eagle project, Mark renovated the screened in porch at St. Jude of the Lake’s Ark. The Ark is used for youth group and bible study. He held many leadership positions including Assistant Senior Patrol leader and Quartermaster. He also achieved Order of the Arrow Brotherhood member and attended Grey Wolf Leadership training. His favorite adventure was to Sea Base in the Florida Keys. Mark plans to pursue an engineering degree at Iowa State in the fall. His parents are Maria and Rob Dengler.

Dressed for the occasion, Zephyr hockey celebrates 65th season

Mahtomedi boys hockey history is being celebrated this winter in what is designated as the 65th Anniversary Season.

The players wear a gorgeous navy-blue jersey with a special 65th logo and several other features. A meticulously-detailed Zephyr history is presented in a special 16-page program.

Apparel and memorabilia are available to the public.

“Players and coaches alike are very excited,” said coach Jeff Poeschl, “about being able to share some of the rich history of hockey in Mahtomedi with those that might not know what we have going here.”

The 65th anniversary program is packed with bios on current coaches, a decade-by-decade narrative, capsules on all six head coaches, and list after list — the 10 conference champion teams, the 10 state tournament teams, the 19 players with 100 points (led by Brett Borgen, ’03, with 109 goals and 99 assists), the 22 graduates who played in Division I, the 21 players who scored in state tournaments (led by Jesse Sampair with five goals and seven assists), and the five NHL draft picks.

Sprinkled throughout are vintage team photos and action shots of past Zephyr stars.

“This is fun. It brings the community together,” said co-captain Noah Skillings. “Everybody likes the jerseys, especially with that stripe of purple that shows Mahtomedi’s original colors.

Myself, and some other seniors, went out and showcased our new jerseys.

It’s cool that youth hockey players are wearing them to our games, and one youth player drops the puck at our home games.”

Craig Roberts, a Zephyr zealot since his twin sons Pat and Paul played for them in the late 1990s, is the driving force behind all this, assisted by former team captains Alex Rogosheske, Brent Borgen, and Marko Zitzer.

as “God, family, and high school hockey,” Roberts wrote the Zephyr history for the season’s program — he asked Rogosheske to present it at an alumni event for fact-checking, and then to the team, last fall — and designed the logo and the jersey.

A professional marketer, keen on presentation, Roberts gives this description of the jersey: It’s navy blue and gold, containing a purple stripe on the sleeve (“because our school colors were purple and gold when hockey started”), a gold yoke stripe on the shoulder (“a tip of the hat to the first jerseys in 1954, which were the football team’s jerseys”), the block “M” from the original team jersey, the iconic logo from the 1980s, the anniversary logo, and, embedded in the numerals, the 10 seasons in which the Zephyrs went to state. The logo is a “65” set on a shield with a 1954-2019 banner and the original logo inside the “6.”

to wear,” said Roberts about the garment manufactured by K1 Sportswear of Cloquet. He emulated the Minnesota Wild’s style.

The jerseys are available at $65 to $110 depending on amenities, with profits going to the high school team and hockey association.

The Zephyrs have had just six head coaches in 65 years — Chuck Gilbertson, Stan Getchel, Warren Strelow, Jeff Whisler, Dave Gervais, Whisler again, and Poeschl — all profiled in the anniversary program.

Strelow coached 19 years and brought the program to a new level, Roberts noted, as a Minnesota hockey legend heading the local program. Strelow, who died in 2007, was a revered goalie coach for Herb Brooks with the Gophers and with the Olympic gold-medalists in 1980, and for several NHL teams.

Poeschl, with 22 seasons and counting, is the longest-running of the six coaches and feels honored to run this program.

“We have had so many great people —

players, coaches, and parents — come through,” he said. “I feel very fortunate to have experienced so many great relationships.”

The 65th squad is 13-2-1 and ranked No. 3 in Class A with a fighting chance to be the school’s 11th state tournament team and third in a row. Poeschl likes the “depth at every position” along with team speed and consistency of play.

Eighteen players have scored goals, led

by Colin Hagstrom with 14, Tom Paradise with 10 and Nikolai Dulak eight.

Eleven seniors, headed by captains Skillings and Tommy Broten, provide excellent “leadership by committee,” Poeschl said.

Asked what he wants people to know about the program, Poeschl said every player is personally challenged to be “the best hockey player and best teammate possible” through hard work and character development.

“Our philosophy and purpose,” he stressed, “is to help boys develop into men during their time as a Zephyr hockey player.”

Hadley erupts for 48 and 40 points back-to-back in Zephyr wins

Two games, eighty-eight points.

That was the ledger last week for J’vonne Hadley, Mahtomedi’s basketball scoring machine, in two victories last week.

“Wow, what a week for him,” marveled coach Keith Newman.

The lanky 6-6 junior poured in 48 points as the Zephyrs beat Hastings 82-67 at home Tuesday, shooting 18-for-23 on field goals (4-for-5 on three’s) and 8-for-11 on free shots.

Hadley followed with 40 points in an 88-57 win over Hill-Murray on Friday evening, hitting 16for-26 from the field and 8-for-11 at the line.

“It was a fun week,” acknowledged Hadley,

whose previous high was 37. “I had higher shooting percentages (than usual) but it was mostly that we were moving the ball really well and everyone was getting open shots, not just me.”

Hadley averages 31.0 points, second in the state behind Rochester John Marshall’s Matthew Hurt with 36.1.

While 48 points would be a record at most schools, a Mahtomedi player named Mike Patterson had a 50-point game in 1961.

Hadley is “very tough to guard,” said Newman, especially after sharpening his three-point shot since last year, when he averaged 15 points.

Hadley was always a dangerous penetrator with either hand.

“I was a post player when I was younger, because of my height,” Hadley said. “When I moved

to guard, I had to grow my skills, shooting a lot in the gym, working on my 3-pointer and pull-up jumpers.”

Against Hastings, Zac Centers added 15 points. Against Hill-Murray, Devin Melzer chipped in 16 points and five assists, and Centers 13 points.

The Zephyrs are 10-3 and ranked No. 6 in Class J’vonne Hadley 3A.

Nordic team competes despite lack of snow The White Bear Nordic team has skied in two more meets when there were openings at Elm Creek Park Reserve. So far the team has held most meets on manmade snow, but are still hoping for the real thing.

Jan. 8 was an extremely cold and windy 5K freestyle (skate skiing) race, but the team raced well despite conditions. Olivia Schwintek came in third in 13:01, followed by Claire Larson in 18th, and Lauren Loppnow in 20th. For the boys’ race, Tryg Solberg came in second in 11:19, followed by Tom Perreira and Isaac Maruyama.

Jan. 15 was another 5K free-

style race with better snow conditions on the course. Schwintek came in second in 13:59, Loppnow in eighth, and Larson in 10th. Emily Brockberg and Megan Ryan also had strong fi nishes for the girls. Solberg came in fi rst overall with a time of 11:49, 7 seconds ahead of second place. Perreira came in 15th, Maruyama came in 17th, with Kolby Bachmeier and Hayden Weddell also scoring for our varsity boys’ team.

She paced the team in all-around with 35.00 points, floor exercise (9.25) and beam (8.725). Kailee Tran scored 31.80, Madalyn Everson 30.875, Madison Carroll 30.50 and Lia Zimmerman 30.25. The Bears (9-11-2) are 1-3-2 in six OT games with two losses. Shearen and Jillian Moor scored against Mounds View. Olivia Reif had the goal against Woodbury. Pin milestones reached by Bear mat trio

White Bear Lake split a pair of low-scoring conference games last week in girls basketball. The Bears (7-9) lost 47-34 to Roseville Area (14-2) as Courtney Crouch sank 11 points and Anna Sanders nine, while Jayda Johnson led the Raiders with 21 points. The Bears won 49-44 over Park (1-15) as Crouch netted 13 points, Ella Janicki and Sanders eight each, and Lauren Eckerle seven.

The White Bear Lake wrestlers (5-7) pulled out one close win after three losses last week. Reaching milestones were senior T.J. Turinske (50th pin), senior Luke Parzyck (25th pin) and freshman Matt Sloan (25th pin). The Bears lost to Forest Lake 58-18 on Thursday. On Saturday at Champlin Park, the Bears lost to St. Francis 46-30 and Aitkin 36-33, then edged Hibbing 38-37 on a tiebreaker.

Turinske and Parzyck were each 4-0 for the week. Sloan and Josh Powell were each 3-1, and Scott Kaufman, Monte Collins and Dysin Strate each 2-2.

Zephyrs 5th in big mat tourney Mahtomedi wrestlers placed fi fth among 18 teams in the East Ridge Ruckus on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18 and 19, with Jake FitzPatrick capturing the 126-pound championship. White Bear Lake took a big step toward the conference hockey championship by turning back Cretin-Derham Hall 2-1 at home Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19.

The Bears (14-2-1) gave up the first goal but Grant Hofeld got the equalizer in the second period and Lleyton Roed delivered the game-winner with 2:54 left in the final period.

“Great win for the Bears,” coach Tim Sager said. “It’s been a very long time for us to sweep Cretin.”

Also beating the Raiders 4-3 in December, the Bears earned their first sweep against them since 2011-12. They were 4-71 against the Raiders the past six years.

The Bears are 11-0-1 in the Suburban East with four conference games left.

Cretin-Derham Hall is 8-2 and Stillwater 6-3. The Bears last won the SEC in 201415. Last year, champ CDH was 14-0-2 and

the Bears 14-1-1.

Both teams’ defenses were stout throughout with the Bears permitting just 20 shots and the Raiders 19. Bear goalie Evan Foss stopped 19 of 20, beaten only by CDH’s Zach Brydges in the second period.

The Bears tied the score 1-1 on Hofeld’s missive from the right side, his team-leading 12th goal, after Billy Rose made a nifty back-hand, two-on-one pass across the ice.

The Bears had a rare penalty shot with six minutes left, after Raider goalie Croix Kochendorfer threw his stick at the puck, but Kochender foiled Chase Bill’s shot. However, Roed got the goahead goal, his ninth, with a dart from the right side, for a 2-1 lead.

The Bears also clipped Forest Lake 3-2 Thursday, Jan. 17, taking a 3-0 lead second-period goals by Blake Meister, Sam Newpower and Chase Bill.

Sydney Shearen took a nice little post-holiday trip again this year. For this White Bear Lake hockey star, that means leaving the Western Hemisphere to play for Team USA in a world tournament.

Shearen played in her second consecutive U18 World Championship game on Jan. 13 in Obihiro, Japan. This time, she was on the losing side, as Canada beat the Americans 3-2 in overtime. A year earlier, Team USA beat Sweden 9-3 in the finals at Dmitrov, Russia, near Moscow.

“We were still proud of what we accomplished, and kept our heads up,” she said.

Team USA beat Russia 3-2, Sweden 2-0, and Finland 7-1 to reach the finals.

The Americans had won four straight

world titles but their closet neighbor and main nemesis prevented No. 5.

Last year’s roster had 10 Minnesotans among 23 players, and this year there were just five Minnesotans. “The sport is growing more around the country,” Shearen said.

Isaiah Tessier is a persistent scorer, tenacious defender and alert passer for White Bear Lake basketball (13-1). The 6-1 senior guard is delivering 15.4 points, 6.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game, shooting 47 percent overall, 36 percent on three’s. “Isaac worked hard in the off season, getting stronger and increasing his vertical, to elevate his game,” coach Keith Lockwood said, adding that the guard also boxes out taller players for rebounds. “Isaac is an integral ingredient to this team’s success,” added the coach.

WEATHER TIDBIT Here it is the final week of January and we’re finally experiencing winter-like temperatures. For the Airport, it was the latest on record for a below zero reading.

For us in the northern metro, we had a below zero morning on January 1. My coldest morning was this past Sunday when it fell to -6º. Our lack of snow cover prevented us dropping another 5-10º. We’ll probably get colder than that this weekend as another blast of Arctic air is headed this way, as well as snow. North to Alaska Part III: Rebuilding

Readers may remember stories about Nick Blanco's Driftwood Wilderness Lodge on Kodiak Island, Alaska, built from scratch using old-growth timber salvaged along a shoreline in the Shelikof Strait.

The St. John's University grad hauled giant logs 8 miles across open water to his remote building site on Larsen Bay. Friends and family helped him cut and mill the wood for the lodge, which was nearly complete when tragedy struck late in 2017. A fi re blamed on a faulty wood stove burned the lodge to the ground. Blanco wasn't home at the time. He lost some precious Eskimo art and months of work, but his canine companion Sarah was unhurt and there were no injuries.

“It was a major punch in the gut,” said his mother, Lynn Nelson of White Bear Lake.

The ever-resilient Blanco looked at the misfortune as opportunity.

“Initially, it was super hard, a big letdown,” he said. “Eventually, I looked at it as practice. The new lodge will be better from a quality and safety standpoint.”

Rebuilding the fi shing/hunting lodge means a later opening: it's been pushed back to fall 2019. A few Minnesota guests have already booked, which Blanco says is all the motivation he needs.

His dream of opening an affordable wilderness lodge in Alaska is not daunted by a life without electricity or indoor plumbing. “I'm making good progress up there,” Blanco said on a visit home over the holidays. “I've made a lot of im-

provements on my charter boat and cleaned up after the fi re.”

Back in 2017, his labor-intensive project was featured on the DIY Network show “Building Alaska.”

Nelson said re-runs are showing this winter and people from around the world are getting in touch with Blanco after seeing the episodes.

A business owner, Nelson runs LIN Public Relations out of her Second Street home, which sits on the site of the old Hotel Chateaugay. Her maternal grandparents, H.A. (Chappie) Chapman and Ruth Chapman, purchased the house in the late '60s.

Both of Nelson's parents, Curt Nelson and Barbara (Chapman) Nelson, grew up in White Bear Lake.

Lynn has made the trek to Kodiak Island about a half dozen times.

“For a gal who’s not crazy about fi shing, I’ve spent a lot of time at fi shing lodges,” she joked. “During my fi rst trip, to Elfi n Cove, Alaska, Nick helped me catch a 140-pound halibut.”

Nelson serves as “unofficial director” of her son's Minnesota support team and no longer questions his decision to live in the wilderness.

“I asked Nick again during our last trip why he decided to go to Alaska,” Nelson said. “He said a good friend in college who was a fellow fi sherman told him about the area and said it was 'the place to be for serious fi shermen.'

“Nick misses some things, but he wouldn't be there if he didn't want to be,” Nelson added. “He's super determined. You have to make your peace with it.”

One thing Blanco misses is Domino's Pizza. It's always the fi rst thing he eats after arriving in White Bear Lake. He adds family and ice cream to that most-missed list, and interaction with people. “I'm always people watching when I'm back in Minnesota. I miss the diversity,” he said. Blanco quickly adds that his home on Larsen Bay is also nice.

“It's peaceful. I love the wilderness.”

When he was home two weeks for Christmas, Nelson decided the best gifts for her son were practical ones: a dentist appointment for Nick and a grooming session and visit to the vet for Sarah.

Blanco said he was spending the holiday shopping. “I'm taking a generator back and a small outboard motor. I'm enjoying the internet.”

Did he ever think about quitting after the fi re? “Hell no,” he replied.

“No way.”

When the lodge opens, visitors will fi nd the accommodations simple, the view beautiful and the food good, Blanco promised. “It will be a real Alaskan experience tailored to your outdoor aspirations at half the cost

of a fancier lodge.”

BUSINESS BRIEFS Quilt store to reopen downtown Good news for quilters. The Bear Patch store in downtown White Bear Lake will open with a new name and a new owner at 2199 Fourth St. The new owner is Dianna Wendorf. She will be at the store for a meet-and-greet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. That happens to also be National Local Quilt Shop Day. Bear Patch remains open through Jan. 31 with a 40 percent discount.

There will be a pause in business as the changeover is made. The sewing center will close but the repair business will continue in the back of the quilt shop.

Meanwhile, David Edwin Fashions in Avalon Mall is moving into space next to the quilt shop. That move won't happen until next spring.
