ST. PAUL — Next stop for the Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is release of an environmental assessment, followed by a public comment period later this summer.

The timeline was formed up at last month's policy advisory committee (PAC) meeting, held virtually and chaired by White Bear Lake Mayor Jo Emerson.

The $457 million-plus project is a 15mile bus line between downtown White Bear Lake and Union Depot in St. Paul.

Partnering with the county on the transit corridor are the Metropolitan Council; Minnesota Department of Transportation; cities of St. Paul, Maplewood, Vadnais Heights, Gem Lake, White Bear Lake and White Bear Township; and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

Buses will connect riders to 50 medical clinics and hospitals along the route, as well as retail outlets and whatever else lies between the 21 stations along the route. Park and ride lots are planned at the existing Maplewood Mall transit center and at the County Road E station (70 spaces at the TCO Sports Garden) with a third, 300-space, structure being considered at the Highway 36 station.

Barhan Boat Works: Built by fishermen for fishermen Salmon fisherman Dave Barhan picked an unusual spot to build boats during the off season: White Bear Floral’s greenhouse.

On his second season of boat building, the retired teacher recalls driving around the area looking for a shed or pole building large enough to

construct a 28-foot commercial fishing skiff. He spied the greenhouses behind the florist and thought it the perfect place.

Owner John Birkeland was skeptical at first, but became a believer when Barhan, his two sons and a fourth fishing partner rolled out the first aluminum boat, dubbed “Big Momma.”

They call the business

Barhan Boat Works, or BBW. Their motto: “Built by fishermen for fishermen.”

A single dad, Barhan’s two sons Taylor and Adrian had a unique upbringing. As youngsters, they spent carefree summers in a place called Nushagak Bay in southwest Alaska. While Dave was netting salmon 1,000 feet offshore, SEE SALMON FISHERMEN, PAGE 11

Press receives 3 awards

I

’m so excited to announce that Press Publications has received three awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association (MNA) Better as a part of the 2019-20 Better Newspaper Contest (BNC).

Every year, dailies and non-dailies with circulations all the way from 1,500 to over 10,000 from all over the state enter the contest.

The contest is made up of several categories in the areas of advertising, stories, breaking news, investigative reporting, design, photography, sports and more.

The 2019-20 contest had 3,100 entries. The Quad Community Press, White Bear Press and Shoreview Press all received awards. I took home first place in the social issues story category; Shoreview Editor Elizabeth Callen received third place in the humanOut and interest story category; and the advertising and production About teams of the White Bear Shannon Press received second place in the advertising excellence Granholm category.

In a non-pandemic world, Press Publications staff would have attended the annual BNC Awards Gala to celebrate in addition to attending various sessions at the MNA Convention. Of course, this year, the gala was held remotely and the virtual convention will be next month.

It just wasn’t the same. Instead of enjoying a meal with my collogues in a hotel banquet room and walking across a stage to grab our awards, I watched a YouTube video in my living room, ate pasta and drank a glass of wine with dessert.

I have won an MNA award before, but this one was special for two reasons. It was the first time I have won first place, but more importantly, the story titled, “Coping with assault” had an impact on not only the victim featured in the story, but others in the Quad area, state and all around the world. The story has since been shared with people in China, Ireland, England and Saudi Arabia.

The story was helpful to the victim’s healing journey and she is now a survivor, not a victim. After the story was published, she told me, “That story was so difficult for me, but it was such a huge step in my healing process.”

And better yet, her assailant, who assaulted many other women, will spend several years behind bars.

The judges commented on the story, “The first-person account was a great vehicle to explain such a brutal subject. The additional resources are necessary information to help readers. Very thoughtful piece.”

From upheaval grows innovation

A

s we continue to navigate our way through this pandemic, I think it’s safe to say we’re all looking forward to some sense of normalcy. However, in the area of K-12 education, we’ve challenged ourselves not to simply return to the way things were before the pandemic, but instead to bound forward to create a better future for our schools, our children, and our community.

The pandemic has forced us to reimagine school, creating Movers & something entirely new.

Shakers Our staff quickly responded Barb Duffrin with new ways of providing academic and social-emotional support to our students. We are proud of the creative systems and strategies our staff has used to connect with and engage our learners through this time.

Many of the changes we have implemented, forced by this pandemic, are positive and student-focused. Oftentimes from difficult situations, the unlikely opportunities for innovation grow. One area of opportunity is expanding educational services with a more flexible definition of what constitutes instructional hours.

At the September 24, 2020 meeting of the Mahtomedi School Board, board members unanimously approved a resolution that would charge the Minnesota School Board Association with advocating for a flexible and equitable instructional hours conversation at the Minnesota State Legislature. The resolution calls on legislators to provide local school districts the flexibility to redefine traditional instructional hours/seat time in order to better reflect the time students are receiving and engaging in educational services. A new hours of instruction model doesn’t remove anything from a student’s education, rather it makes room for project-based learning, work-based learning, service learning, internships, flexibly-paced coursework, and other experiences that provide learning opportunities that benefit students.

On January 20, 2021, the Senate Education Finance and Policy Committee, chaired by Senator Chamberlain with Ranking Minority Member Senator Wiger, heard from Mahtomedi School Board Chair, Dr. Lucy Payne. At the hearing, Chair Payne testified on our shared commitment to envision an educational system that values a personalized educational experience over seat time in a classroom. Chair

Payne shared the following, “Our current definition of “instructional hours” or “seat time” can be a barrier to considering new and innovative teaching and learning models that work for every student in our district. The state’s current definition of instructional hours often puts time as the focus rather than student engagement and student learning.”

Last year, our school district finalized our strategic plan.

One of our strategies to help us accomplish our district mission is to define learning and teaching without barriers.

Our experience navigating the pandemic shook up our traditional educational model.

Our staff and students responded by learning together, growing their knowledge, skills, and problem-solving capabilities.

We can envision and design a system that empowers local school boards and school districts and honors the unique ways and environments whereby students learn. We look forward to the design process ahead and partnering with our local and state legislators to make this a reality for our students and educators.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Crime in our city As most of our residents are aware, our area has seen a spike in crime this past year. However, our area has not seen the violent crime nearby cities have — so far.

We have seen an endless amount of property crime that includes vehicle break-ins, mail/package theft and garage break-ins. When you are the victim, these are not minor crimes. As a lifelong resident of Vadnais Heights, I never believed there would be a time where we could not leave a package on our doorsteps for a few hours without concern of it being stolen. Unfortunately, this is where we are at. The crime patterns do not involve a particular area, street or time of day. The evidence suggests there

are people roaming the streets looking to victimize our residents.

In my opinion, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is doing a great job using the resources they have to manage this crime wave as best they can. At the same time this is happening, the county board of commissioners is defunding the Ramsey County Sheriff of funding for 12 positions. At our next City Council meeting, I plan to bring forward ideas to end this nonsense and restore safety and security in our great city. I urge all of the powers that be to join me in this goal of safety and security for all and to support our Sheriff’s Department.

Media company suing Google and Facebook A West Virginia newspaper company filed an antitrust lawsuit in federal court against Google and Facebook last week. The lawsuit, filed by HD Media, accuses the tech companies of monopolizing the digital advertising market and profiting from “anticompetitive and monopolistic practices.” The lawsuit is the first of its kind to be filed by a newspaper company, HD Media said.

CHURCH BRIEF Garage sale date set, help needed Community of Grace Lutheran Church has set the 2021 date for the Annual Community Garage Sale for Saturday, June 19. The garage sale has been one of the most anticipated of the Manitou Days events for more than 20 years.

Napoleon Joseph Dupre “Nap”

Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on January 18, 2021 at Waverly Gardens in North Oaks, Minnesota with family by his side.

Ed brought wisdom, soft-spoken gentleness, and love to everyone he knew.

He was born April 1, 1928 in Frazee, Minnesota and raised in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Ed served with the Army in Japan, received WWII Victory Medal, and was Honorably discharged in October 1947.

Ed graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS in petroleum engineering. He married Marcia Linner in 1952, and they started a family in Texas where Ed took a job with Mobil Oil. Work and family brought them back to Minnesota where Ed took a job with NSP (now Xcel Energy) until his retirement.

Marcia passed away in 1985.

Ed had an active retirement which he enjoyed with his second wife, Helen “Bari” Jagger, for over 30 years. He always loved outdoor activities including camping, swimming, hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, gardening, and riding his bike. Ed also enjoyed bird watching and never turned down an invitation to take a walk. He especially loved sharing his interests with family and friends.

Preceded in death by first wife Marcia Chilton (Linner), parents Ed and “Martz” Chilton, and siblings Judy, Dan, and Nancy.

Survived by second wife, Helen “Bari” Jagger; children: Sarah Chilton, Jane Branshaw (Steve), and Laurie Otte (Ed); Bari’s children: Tom Jagger (Julie), Ted Jagger (Annette), Martha Tateosian (Mark); grandchildren: Josh Chilton, Stephanie Swanson (Eric), and Renee Zachman (Jerad); Bari’s 11 grands; and many other family members and friends.

In memory, no flowers, please. The family prefers a memorial of your choosing or planting a plant in your yard to remember Ed. The family wants to give thanks to special caregivers Rowene, Becky, and Mark B., in addition to Waverly Gardens Presbyterian Homes Staff and St. Croix Hospice.

Mary Therese Dahl, age 91 passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 22, 2021 while a resident of St. Elizabeth’s Care Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. Mary Therese was born on August 8, 1929 to James (Bert) and Dorothy (nee Koch) Leonard in Lake City, Minnesota. After graduating from Mary E. McCahill Institute in 1947 she attended Winona State University where she met the love of her life Charles (Chuck) Dahl. After graduating with her Degree in Education, she married Chuck in 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City. They lived for a short time in Parma, Ohio before returning to Minnesota and settling in White Bear Lake. She taught school for many years at St. Jude’s in Mahtomedi before moving to a career selling furniture at Sears in Maplewood, Minnesota. In later years, she traveled to many US cities and lived in many US states following and being best friend to her daughter. She was the best Mom ever and beloved wife, daughter, and sister.

Her sense of humor and the sound of her laugh were infectious.

She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck and her parents Bert and Dorothy along with many Aunts and Uncles. They are all having a grand old time now playing euchre in Heaven where Mary Therese is enjoying the best Chardonnay ever as they have the best vintages there.

She is survived by her only child Mary Frances Dahl (Stewartville, Minnesota), her “big” brother Jim Leonard (Whitehouse, Texas), and her “little” brother Gene Leonard (Schaumburg, Illinois) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins survive Mary Therese. Per her wishes she will be cremated and a celebration of her life will take place later this year in Lake City. Mary Therese was a devout Catholic and her ashes will be interred later this year in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake City.

Napoleon Joseph Dupre “Nap” of White Bear Lake, MN passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2021, surrounded by his children and granddaughter. Nap lived a wonderful long life for 93 years. He is proceeded in death by his loving wife, Beverly (Smith) Dupre of 53 years. He is survived by his very special friend of 16 years, Alice Pundsack; his children, Gregory (Teresa) Bradley and Denise (Scott) Bocklund; his grandchildren, Andrea Dupre, Brian (Alison) Bocklund and Diana Bocklund; great-grandchildren, Rya Dupre, Zaeden Dupre, and Rose Bocklund; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Nap grew up in Forest Lake Minnesota, proudly served in the US Navy, and excelled in his lengthy career in the water conditioning industry.

Nap loved his family, church, friends, travel, dancing, bingo, casinos, and fishing. He was a man of many interests and hobbies. Nap was a kind and wonderful man loved by all. A visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Mueller Memorial Funeral Home, 4738 Bald Eagle Ave, White Bear Lake. Face Coverings required. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private mass by invitation only and interment will be held at St. Mary of the Lake Church and Cemetery. Also survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and sister Mary (John) Hedberg of Shoreview and many beloved nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Thomas Chock, Roy Chock Jr., Jack Chock, sister Lucille (Joseph) Bowman, twin sister Delores (Alan) Malley and devoted husband Bill.

Dorothy was a loving, giving person and a very special lady who shared hospitality, love and kindness throughout her life with family and friends and especially the elderly. Our lives were better for having her with us. Rest in Eternal Peace.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • An unidentified female was reported for assault at 3:17 a.m. Jan. 19 at an apartment complex in the 800 block of County Road D for spitting in the face of a tow truck driver as he was trying to tow her non-permitted vehicle from the lot. The suspect then told the driver she had COVID. • A citizen on a daily walk in the 3200 block of Edgerton Street at 9:31 a.m. Jan. 19 reported fi nding a pile of cash on the sidewalk. Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies took the cash to be placed into property.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Ford Ranger parked in the 600 block of County Road D sometime between Jan. 17-19.

• Two Minneapolis men, both 20, and a juvenile male were all arrested at 3:40 p.m. Jan 20 at the Vadnais Heights Target in the 900 block of County Road E for stealing two television sets from the store. Deputies stopped the vehicle in which the suspects were escaping before it left the lot.

• Deputies recovered a vehicle stolen out of St. Paul at 5:07 a.m. Jan. 21 in the 900 block of

County Road D after a tow truck driver towing non-permit vehicles from the parking lot identified the vehicle.

• A St. Paul man on Jan. 21 reported criminal damage to a construction trailer after thieves tried to steal it from the 600 block of County Road D and damaged one side and both wheel wells.

• Deputies recovered a vehicle stolen out of Little Canada Jan. 21 in a store parking lot in the 800 block of County Road E. • A Shoreview woman reported her wallet stolen in December from a shopping cart while at a big box store in the 800 block of County Road E. She reported the theft after thieves had rung up more than $3,000 in fraudulent charges at Sam's Club on Jan. 21.

• A Stillwater man, 32, was arrested for disorderly conduct Jan. 22 at a hotel in the 3500 block of Vadnais Center Drive after he caused damage to his hotel room and refused to identify himself and leave the premises.

• Deputies recovered the personal belongings of a hotel guest Jan. 22 in the 1100 block of County Road E and entered them into property.

• A White Bear Township man and a Shoreview man on Jan. 22 reported their trucks broken into as they were parked in the north lot of Sucker

Lake Park in the 100 block of County Road F. The township man canceled his credit cards after he discovered items stolen from inside. The Shoreview man also reported a window of his vehicle smashed in and said there was evidence someone rummaged through the glove box. Nothing is missing.

• A South St. Paul man and a St. Paul woman, both 32, were arrested on felony warrants Jan. 23 in the 1000 block of County Road D after deputies responded to a call reporting suspicious activity where people were checking door handles of vehicles in an apartment lot. The complainant followed the vehicle and witnessed similar activity in parking lots in Little Canada. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and took the pair into custody.

White Bear Township • A resident in the 1900 block of Ridgewood Avenue reported her mail stolen Jan. 21 after the shipper notified her about delivery of a package that never arrived.

• A wallet was reported stolen overnight Jan. 22-23 from an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway in the 5900 block of Mallard Ponds Drive. Fraudulent purchases were unsuccessfully attempted at the Vadnais Heights Target and Walmart.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood • A suspicious unoccupied vehicle reported Jan. 3 on Jay Street turned out to belong to a registered owner who told Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies his vehicle had broken down the previous night and would be towed soon.

Dellwood • A Dellwood Road resident reported a burglary overnight Jan. 6-7.

Grant • Items were reported stolen from a vehicle Jan. 3 in the area of 60th Street N. and Manning Avenue N. • Residents in the 9000 block of 60th Street N. on Jan. 6 reported an ongoing issue of suspicious vehicles driving into their driveway before leaving. The complainant requested

extra patrol due to the large number of recent vehicle thefts in the area.

Mahtomedi • A Stillwater Road resident on Jan. 3 reported items stolen from a motor vehicle.

• A motorist was cited at 1:40 a.m.

Jan. 5 in the 100 block of Hallam Avenue S. for tabs that expired in May 2020, after deputies conducted a traffic stop.

• A resident in the 1000 block of East Shore Avenue on Jan. 5 reported deputies on patrol for driving past her home and spotlighting her windows. Deputies advised the complainant they had not been in the area. The complainant declined extra patrol.

• An Iris Street resident on Jan. 6 reported the neighbors for taking a large number of dogs out for a walk. When deputies asked the complainant whether the dogs were barking, the complainant revealed

that they were not. Deputies advised him that the Mahtomedi noise ordinance would be in play only if the dogs were barking for an extended period during quiet hours.

• A resident living near White Bear Lake on Jan. 6 reported a male party for sending him death threats via phone. The complainant was unable to show deputies any actual threats, however. Not only that, but deputies noted that the messages on his phone indicated that the complainant was the one instigating the arguments. After being unable to contact the other male, deputies advised the complainant about taking out an order for protection and a harassment restraining order.

Better yet, deputies advised, discontinue communicating with the other male.

• An Echo Shores Court resident on Jan. 8 reported fraud.

Pine Springs • An unidentified motorist was cited

Jan. 8 on I-694 for speeding.

• A Minnesota motorist was arrested at 11:11 p.m. Jan. 8 on westbound Highway 36 at I-694 for DWI after deputies pulled him over for following another vehicle too closely. As the driver explained the evolution of his realizing he was following too closely, he showed signs of impairment. Deputies administered field sobriety tests, which the driver failed with a 0.17 blood alcohol content.

Willernie • A business owner on Stillwater Road reported receiving threats from an unknown male Jan. 8 after the male tried to park in his business lot. The male had become upset and angrily called the complainant a Biden supporter.

• After deputies conducted a traffic stop on Stillwater Road Jan. 8 for expired registration, the occupants of the vehicle volunteered that they had marijuana in the vehicle.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following selected incidents: • Officers responded to a report of a person who was high, stole pretzels and caused a disturbance in the parking lot of two businesses in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road Jan. 21.

• Witnesses reported a couple fighting in the 1800 block of Birch Street Jan 21. The woman at the scene reported being assaulted and her car window smashed by the man, who left on foot.

• A driver was arrested following a traffic stop in the 3200 block of Highway 61 Jan. 21 for driving after cancellation. His female passenger was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

• Criminal damage to property occurred in the 1800 block of Cedar Avenue Jan. 21.

• A stolen vehicle was recovered in the 4600 block of White Bear Parkway Jan. 22.

• Theft from a vehicle occurred in the 3400 block of Buckbee Road Jan. 22.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS A White Bear Lake man, 56, faces two counts related to driving while impaired after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies recognized his vehicle parked at the Holiday Station at Highway 61 and County Road J Jan. 19. Deputies had already arrested him more than once on DWI offenses, so they looked him up and discovered that his license had been canceled due to unsafe behavior.

Deputies let him drive the vehicle away so they could identify him as driving when he wasn't supposed to. When they pulled him over at 12:40 p.m. on eastbound County Road J, they noticed several signs of intoxication.

The subject failed the horizontal gaze hystagmus test, the walk and turn test and the standing on one leg test. He submitted to a preliminary breath test that registered at 0.155. At jail one hour later, the subject registered an alcohol concentration of 0.16.

The defendant has been charged with one count of second-degree DWI, which carries a maximum jail term of one year and/or a maximum fine of $3,000. He has also been charged with second-degree alcohol concentration of greater than 0.08, which carries the same penalty as

the first charge.

He has prior impaired driving convictions in the past and a DUI conviction from June 2019. These priors, coupled with the alcohol reading of 0.16, served as aggravating factors.

White Bear man federally indicted

U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald announced a federal superseding indictment against six Minnesota men for conspiracy, firearms violations and carjacking. One of the defendants is a White Bear Lake man, 22, who was charged with one count of conspiracy to use, carry and brandish firearms during and in relation to a crime of violence, and three counts of unlawful controlled-substance user in possession of firearms. He was not charged with aiding and abetting carjacking as the other five men were.

According to the allegations in the superseding indictment and documents filed with the court, from at least May 2020 through January 2021, the defendants maintained active membership in the street gang known as the “Top 5.”

The purpose of the gang was to make money for its members through criminal acts that included thefts, robberies and distribution and sale of controlled sub-

Top 5 members used social media to discuss criminal activity, recruit new members and display cash, firearms and controlled substances. The known incidents occurred in St. Paul.

All six defendants have been ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings.

Two dead in Mahtomedi incident

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call about two unresponsive people located outside the Fed Ex facility at 7 Long Lake Road in Mahtomedi at 2:26 a.m. Feb. 1. Responding deputies located two adult males. One was deceased and life saving measures were performed on the other man. He was transported to the hospital where he later died. A firearm was located on scene.

The Sheriff’s Office is not seeking any suspects and there is no current threat to public safety.

Woman arrested for murder in White Bear Lake

An Eagan woman, 40, was arrested and booked in the Ramsey County Jail Jan. 29 on charges of third-degree murder relating to an incident that occurred Sept.

10 in White Bear Lake. She was released at the direction of the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office and was not charged as of press time while the investigation continues. The White Bear Lake Police made the arrest in Eagan, and declined to comment further on the investigation at this time.

Explosion likely caused by fireworks

White Bear Lake police officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Dotte Drive at 10:36 a.m. Feb. 1 on a report of an explosion and smoke. According to Captain Phil Henry, it is believed a large-grade firework was detonated on the trunk of a car, based on photos of recovered pieces that were sent to the St. Paul Bomb Squad.

Witnesses reported seeing a small SUV leaving the scene. The department is actively investigating the incident.

New public safety building on horizon

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Squad cars will no longer sit idling and exposed outside the police station if a 2022 project moves forward.

A remodeled public safety building will provide indoor parking for police vehicles that carry weather-sensitive equipment. Plans also include a second story over the adjoining fire station to accommodate the department’s new ladder truck and provide sleeping quarters for personnel on call 24/7.

The cost to update the aging building is estimated at $10.5 million.

Paramount among reasons for the project are officer safety and vehicle security, according to City Manager Ellen Hiniker. Personnel currently exit the building directly onto the open street where patrol cars are parked. A larger evidence storage area is also needed.

On the fire side, health and safety standards now require separation zones for firefighters returning from a scene.

An area is needed at the North Station to remove gear that may be contaminated with carcinogenic materials, for example.

Back in 1961 when the existing bay was built, fire calls numbered a few hundred a year. “Now we get more than 4,000 calls,” Hiniker noted, an increase she considered astounding.

City Council has been talking about reconstruction of a police garage and fire apparatus bay since 2017, Hiniker pointed out. An architect was approved, Wold Architects, in October 2019, but the project was put on hold due to the pan-

Schools across the nation and in our own backyard have been adapting to challenges from the pandemic for nearly a year.

Marisa Vette, director of communications and community relations at White Bear Lake Area Schools, said teachers and staff members are finding new, collaborative ways to engage with students and families through the changing learning models.

“Although this year looks different, our students are learning,” said Vette. “Our teachers are getting creative to offer lessons in a way that engages our youngest learners with developmentally appropriate and flexible methods. Teachers are partnering with families in helping students become more independent learners, with appropriate supports. Starting the year in a hybrid model allowed for a relationship to be built between teachers and students, with smaller groups of students learning in-person together, and between teachers and families.”

High school teacher Robert Anderson agrees. “Students and teachers are struggling in a number of different aspects.

The inequities in our system are magnified. We are working hard to establish and build relationships and do the best we can to support each other,” Anderson said.

High school teachers in particular have become creative with their lessons. Examples have included providing virtual labs in science, using instructional technology applications in world language, and sending items and supplies home for labs for Family and Consumer Science classes.

Final design will be reviewed in May/June with construction documents prepared mid-summer. If all goes as planned, a construction contract will be awarded February 2022.

In a memo to council, Hiniker noted, “While proceeding with final design does signal the intention to move forward with the project, it does not commit to construction timing. A decision to authorize preparation of construction specifications for a bidding process would follow further review of the city’s longrange financial plan this spring within the context of the economic forecast.”

If the city bonds for the project, the tax levy will have an approximate impact of $700,000. A median valued home would get about a $50 increase, based on 2020 values.

Councilman Bill Walsh called the project “a wise move.”

“I think we’re on the upswing economically,” he said, adding he likes the idea the project could be slowed if necessary.

Both Walsh and Councilman Doug Biehn agreed the timeline was a good one. “I am concerned about the cost,” Biehn said. “It’s a large number, but I see a need for this project.”

Currently, the 31-member police department has four indoor parking spots and 18 total vehicles in its fleet. Miller Street homes were long ago purchased and razed by the city for an expansion, first contemplated in 1993. The city plans to permanently close the block to through traffic whether or not the project proceeds.

Help distribute More than Meals Volunteers are needed to help with the distribution of about 400 meals twice a week at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center, a pickup location for the “More than Meals” program. Seven volunteers ages 16 and up are needed from 3:50 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March. Most of the time is spent outside directing traffic and putting meals in cars.

White Bear Lake Schools forges onward High school teacher Ben Kirkham made some changes in his lesson plans to better suit students’ needs.

“This year I have had to make a lot of decisions on what assignments are the most important, and what I do not have to include. In many cases, the curriculum created this year is better than what I have created in the past because my questions and intentions are much more deliberate,” Kirkham said.

Kirkham believes his students are getting the same amount of curriculum and instruction as they would in a typical year, though perhaps not as much personal attention.

“They are not getting as much one-on-one interaction with me, which means fewer opportunities to revise work, to ask individual questions or just to talk privately about things they struggle with,” Kirkham said.

Although the district is working hard to ensure that students learn and maintain their grades, it’s not perfect.

Kirkham noted that all teachers see the challenges the students have with regard to a loss of socialization and activities.

“It is so difficult to be miles away and unable to help. What is even lesser known, and sometimes harder to see, is the loss of motivation and large increase of apathy that so many of our students have accepted as their new normal. So many students do not see the importance of their school work, and grades are slipping for many of these kids. For many others, they are busy helping younger siblings with their schoolwork, meals, etc., and they sacrifice their own educations to

help care for their families,” Kirkham said.

His biggest concern this year is that the world might treat this academic year as normal.

“Although this year looks different, our students are learning,” Marisa Vette Director of Communications and Community Relations “Standardized testing for this year should never be compared to any other year, and probably shouldn't happen at all. GPAs for this year should not be scrutinized or compared to previous years, especially in planning for future academic plans,” Kirkham said.

He noted that scheduling for next year will be confusing and difficult, as many use testing and GPA data for course recommendations.

An unexpected positive outcome of this new way of learning for students is that the district is providing personalized learning in a new way, which helps meet goals set in its Strategic Plan more quickly.

“The pandemic has had a day in and day out impact on our community — on students, families and staff members, but there is a lot of good that can and should be recognized,” Vette said. “A concern would be that idea that this is a lost year, without realization of all that has been and will be accomplished by our students and staff members. Additional-

ly, a priority for the district has been to make sure our mental health supports are robust for students, families and staff members.”

K-12 students have been operating in a distance learning model since November.

Many parents in the district and throughout the state have voiced concerns with the distance learning model. Some have attended events including the Let Them Learn Rally held at the capitol in December.

Vette notes that the district wants students to be back in school in person as soon as is practical, given all of the different factors that must be considered.

“The pandemic has obviously been challenging for students; some are struggling while many others are doing quite well. The district has been engaged in work to look at our grading practices since before the pandemic began, and the last few months have provided further evidence that we must continue that work,” Vette said.

The district offers support to help students successfully navigate distance learning.

Secondary students have district-issued Chromebooks, and the technology team worked with families to provide devices to those in need. The district brings students who need extra support into buildings for in-person learning.

Other types of resources are available to students and families through the Support Hub on the district’s website.

“The Support Hub serves as a place for families and community members to access information they may need for essential services,” said Vette. “This support provides important information regard-

ing crisis services, basic needs, mental health and well-being, physical health, social emotional learning and more.”

Students in grades K-5 have transitioned back to hybrid learning, while it is uncertain when students in grades 6-12 will head back to the classroom. In the meantime, the district and teachers say they and their students are doing their best with the cards they have been dealt.

“Our students are growing in independence through this experience. We have watched them live out the (district’s) core values of compassion, integrity, respect, responsibility and service. The district has made innovative changes, many of which may continue forward even after the pandemic. We have learned that learning can look different and have strengthened our belief in the value of relationships and working together,” Vette said.

Kirkham voiced pride in his students.

“They have shown more resiliency, understanding, compassion and care for each other than I have ever seen before. I have very few students who are not passing my classes and, for the most part, attendance is better than any other year I have taught. My students are living through the most difficult and least enjoyable school year of their lives, and they keep showing up to do the work. I have not built as strong of connections through the computer as I would in the classroom, but I also know I will never forget these kids,” he said.

Washington County Jail begins medication-assisted treatment for opioid abuse

A new program at Washington County Jail could save lives by dramatically reducing the risk of overdose from opioids among inmates.

Earlier this month, the jail launched the Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) program, a form of medication-assisted treatment. Many jails have long offered addiction treatment to inmates, including counseling and non-opioid medications. Now, more and more are turning to opioid replacement drugs to lessen withdrawal symptoms and provide inmates struggling with addiction with a path to long-term recovery. Now, the Washington County Jail is among them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven challenging for individuals in recovery from substance abuse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The 2020 data that is available so far has shown an increase in opioid-related overdoses across Minnesota and the metro,â&#x20AC;? Washington County Jail Administrator Roger Heinen said in a statement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This program (MOUD) and other response efforts have become even more important at this critical time.â&#x20AC;?

The new program has many potential benefits, Heinen said, namely reducing the likelihood of overdose, especially in the period immediately after an individual is released from jail, which poses high risks for those struggling with addiction. It also can help break the cycle of re-incarceration that is commonly associated with substance use disorders and increase retention in treatment.

The MOUD program is a collaborative effort between several the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and several Washington County departments, including the Sheriff's Office, Public Health and Environment, Community Services and Community Corrections.

the brothers learned to be self-sufficient back at camp.

Taylor, for instance, took on kitchen duties. “I was cooking for nine people when I was 9 years old,” he said.

Barhan would get a call over the boat radio: “Dad.” “Taylor, what do you need?” he’d answer.

“How do you make the crumble topping for apple pie?”

“So I’d tell him.”

Other fishermen hearing the exchange always kidded Dave about baking from then on.

The boys said they wouldn’t trade the lifestyle they lead, although it has its ups and downs. “We learned a lot of life lessons running around on the beach while dad was out fishing,” Taylor said.

Dave describes fishing camp as “the quintessential village. There is no place to get in trouble. There are no cars to run them over. Everyone knows everyone. I knew they’d be OK.” A chemistry and physics teacher at Mounds View High School for 21 years, Barhan has spent summers fishing sockeye salmon in the pristine bay June through August for 23 years. He was hooked when he accompanied a teaching friend to Alaska one summer to crew for a Norwegian, aptly named Ole. The watershed draining into Bristol Bay consists of 10 river systems that claim the largest remaining wild sockeye run in the world. Nushagak Bay is a large estuary that opens to Bristol Bay in the Bering Sea. “Last year’s overall run was about 58 million fish,” according to Barhan.

Every fisherman holds a shore fishery lease, tightly regulated by the state. Alaska salmon is totally sustainable, he said. “Each river system has a counting tower and a biologist who runs it. They call it an escapement.

They know exactly how many fish go upstream to spawn.

If they require 15,000 fish at the tower and count only 10,000, they don’t let us fish. They ensure spawners get upriver. Once that happens, we can fish.”

The three Barhan family members and friend Jason Lichtenberg all hold permits. Their annual target is 50,000 pounds per permit.

Fishing success fluctuates, Barhan said. “Some years it’s a paid vacation, and some years quite a lucrative venture.”

Their camp consists of four 12x16 plywood shacks that have no insulation or studded walls. They have an outhouse, a sauna and enough water pressure to plumb a hot water heater to take showers, do laundry and wash dishes.

There are the occasional bear encounters, but mostly when the camp is deserted. One of the cabins has a perennial patch where a passing grizzly leaves its mark.

Seems a corner of the cabin is next to the path, so bears take a bite out of the plywood when walking by. “We gave up trying to repair it,” Barhan said. “They like to let you know they’re there.”

The closest town is Dillingham, 7 miles away and across the bay. About 30 families reside in the fishing village every summer. “If someone needs a cup of sugar, we ‘borrow it over the fence’ kinda thing,” Dave said.

The area just got cell service, which he considers “a sad thing.”

“It used to be a great escape,” he explained. “You had to go to town to use a pay phone if you had to call someone.”

The makeup of fishermen calling the village home every summer is an interesting one. “On that beach, you have lawyers and doctors and many with master’s

degrees,” Barhan pointed out.

“There’s a real sense of community,” Adrian said. “It’s a simple life,” agreed Lichtenberg.

“We live by the tides,” added Taylor. “We don’t care about time.”

Boat building is a recent venture born of necessity. And it’s a good way to spend the winter.

They consider the work fun and challenging. “That’s why I like commercial fishing,” Dave said. “You’re always trying to improve equipment and the way you catch fish.”

Once their fleet is complete, they will custom build for other fishermen. Fully rigged with electronics and a 250 horsepower outboard, the boats are worth about $110,000.

They’ve had mishaps in the remote area over the years, but nothing serious. Taylor told of a time their boat almost sank. They were having their annual Thanksgiving dinner in July with friends when a fisherman’s son came running to the cabin to say their boat was in trouble.

Tides in the bay fluctuate 30 feet, so heavier boats must be left floating or they’ll be stranded in mud. One of the boats had been anchored in such a way that waves were crashing over the bow, filling it with water.

“It was sinking. I put my wool socks on and sprinted across the mud,” Taylor recalled. “Everyone came out with buckets to help bail. It was getting dark and the tide was coming in, but we saved the boat. It would have been a big loss.”

Spending summers on the bay has given Dave Barhan a different viewpoint on life. “We learn to appreciate and treasure community,” he said. “It’s an honest lifestyle; crime is rare. No one locks their doors.”

His dad was on his deathbed when he urged Barhan to use his inheritance to buy in to an operation. “So that’s what I did,” said the White Bear Lake resident.

He hopes it will last. The largest salmon run left on the planet is under threat, Barhan said. Last month, Alaska’s Gov. Mike Dunleavy threatened to appeal denial of a

permit for the proposed Pebble Mine, an open-pit gold and copper mine that would be situated in the middle of the Bristol Bay fishery. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for the mine after determining the plan would not comply with the Clean Water Act. If built, the open-pit gold and copper mine would be one of the largest in North America.

Fishermen and tribes in Bristol Bay have been fighting the project for more than a decade. Alaska Public Media reported that the Army Corps will likely uphold its decision to deny the permit.

“The mine will ruin the watershed,” Barhan maintained. “It would be a tremendous loss.”

After 14 months in rented space at Birch Lake Square, Keith Hisdahl fi nally opened his new store Nov. 1, 2020. The footprint is about the same, but the longtime White Bear business has a modernized new look on Highway 96.

His parents, Don and Carol, started Hisdahl’s in the late ’60s, setting up their fi rst trophy shop in Auger’s Garage. In 1972, the business moved next to Cup and Cone and in 1976, settled at the current address in a house built in 1919. They offer screen printed and embroidered apparel, custom trophy and recognition placards, and have a small Scouting department inherited from Parenteau’s when it closed.

Keith was 11 when he started working for the family business.

An ’81 White Bear grad, he went on to major in graphic design and marketing at St. Cloud State. His graduation present from his parents was the screenprinting shop in the building’s basement. He purchased the entire business in ’95.

All the custom work at Hisdahl’s is done in-house, with help from seven employees, three of whom are full time. Keith creates all the graphics for the Bear wear and Zephyr items, proudly claiming to “produce quality stuff to hang on the wall or wear.”

Skate sharpening is a $6 service that Hisdahl has provided since age 13. “I’m very particular about sharpening skates,” he said. “I love doing that.”

Hisdahl said he fi gured it was time to “invest in myself,” so he started the arduous process to remodel that took eight long years. He had to give up on a fi rst plan “that didn’t work out with city,” so he went to Plan B. “It’s been a strug-

gle,” he admitted, thanking his wife Cheryl for supporting him as he “follows his dream.”

COVID-19 did a number on his bottom line in 2020, but Christmas was strong, which helped. Shutting down team sports during the pandemic especially hurt sales, but shoppers are starting to trickle in.

The store owner said he “loves White Bear customers. They are committed to their small business-

es, and that’s appreciated. They like customer service and we work hard at providing that.”

When he’s not working, Hisdahl enjoys being on the golf course and crewing an A-boat on summer race nights. “I’m not all work,” he pointed out.

City airs wish list for legislators

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Later this month, area legislators will be invited to a virtual meeting to hear City Council’s legislative agenda, i.e. its wish list.

Among the items approved Jan. 26 for discussion at the meeting:

• Increase deputy registrar fi ling fees that reimburse offices for customer service costs. According to City Manager Ellen Hiniker, the license bureau currently recovers only half its costs. A bill has been introduced in the House; a companion bill has not yet been introduced in the Senate. Rate increases for driver’s licenses, tab renewals and title changes are requested starting July 1, 2021.

• Identify 35% of funding needed to proceed with the public safety building project (see separate story on project).

• Legislative relief for cities impacted by the 2017 court order requiring a residential watering ban

when lake levels fall below 923.5 feet. Hiniker pointed out that average lake level is 923.14 feet, or lower than the threshold for a total watering ban.

“If we had a ban in place during dry years (2006 to 2016), we would have had 10 straight seasons without the ability for residents to water,” Hiniker said. “We have a lot of concerns about that, so we’re looking for legislative relief on that order.”

A ban would be in place until the lake reaches an elevation of 924 feet per the district court order.

• Identify a funding mechanism for managing contaminated stormwater pond dredging materials.

There is concern about costs related to disposal of hazardous waste, which are triple normal costs.

“Pollutants are not of our making at all,” noted City Engineer Paul Kauppi. Many ponds are 20 years old and older and contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pollutants found in driveway sealants.

• Support legislation to allow chief law enforcement officers access to the National Criminal History database. Lack of access hinders the department’s ability to conduct background checks. Legislation is being introduced.

• Identify funding to assist with East Goose Lake water quality management projects.

East Goose Lake is on the state impaired list.

• Seek expansion of opportunities for affordable homeownership.

• Support statewide licensure of massage therapists.

The meeting with legislators is scheduled for Feb. 9 via Zoom.

NEXT STEPS FOR RUSH LINE: Construction to begin following assessment, public hearings FROM PAGE 1

and cost estimates with the committee at its Jan. 21 meeting. The presentation showed the line is expected to provide between 6,700 and 7,400 rides per day by 2040, with an estimated capital cost between $457 million (without the Hwy. 36 park and ride) and $474 million. Annual maintenance and operating costs are estimated at $15.3 million in 2026 dollars.

Federal funding for the project will be requested through the Capital Investment Grants Program administered by the FTA. Based on estimated cost and ridership, financial plan, relief benefits and impacts on land use and economic development, the BRT project is expected to qualify for the program and be competitive for funding with other projects around the country.

“Bringing jobs, housing, education, health care and other essential resources together with high-quality transit is part of how we enhance quality of life in Ramsey County,” said Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt, chair of the Rush Line Corridor Task Force. “The work that is being done now on the Rush Line project will ensure we build a transportation system that provides increased access to jobs and vital services.”

Recent study figures by the University of Minnesota on mass transit usage reported by KSTP News ("Southwest Light Rail delayed, transit future uncertain," Jan. 14) show a 60% drop in bus ridership during the pandemic with light rail usage down by about 70%. Asked about the low ridership numbers, Reinhardt said she remains confident the forecast will stand.

"Right now, ridership is very different because of COVID-19," Reinhardt noted.

"Clearly there's been a change (during the pandemic), but Rush Line is not just a commuter line but an other-destination line. Ridership characteristics presented at the meeting show 46% of users are non-commuters, with 77% riding by choice. I'm confident with the information we have."

The commissioner added she hears people say they don't see anyone riding the bus. "Well, if there was a more convenient

bus, I wouldn't be using my car," she retorted. "This is about change, and I know people have trouble with that."

The environmental assessment is expected to publish in May 2021, with a 45-day public comment period and public hearings to follow in June. A decision from the FTA on the assessment is expected fall of 2021.

“We look forward to this key step forward for Rush Line BRT this year,” Mayor Emerson said in a county press release.

“Rush Line is a critical part of ensuring the East Metro has access to our region’s growing transit system. As our economy recovers from the pandemic-related downturn, we want to be ready to welcome jobs, housing and growth to our communities.”

Construction is slated to start in 2024 and service projected to start in 2026.

Oversight for the project is expected to transition from the county to the Met Council later this year.

Roma Restaurant opens specialty meat market

Roma Market in Mahtomedi will be returning to its roots this February by replacing one of its dining rooms with a specialty meat market.

The decision was partly spurred by the steep drop in in-person dining during the long months of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Grocery is something the government’s not going to shut off,” said Roma Manager Brian Pilrain. “It makes more sense long term to have this wing as a grocery store, and we still have the west wing for dining.”

Pilrain said the east wing of the building has been basically empty for nearly two years. The pandemic followed swiftly on the heels of major reconstruction on County Road 12, which had already caused a serious decline in business.

Last summer, the business converted its rear parking lot into an outdoor dining and performance space. The open-air environment was ideal for keeping up the restaurant business during the warm summer months.

“It fit so well for us, for a few months when things were good outside, we kind of forgot the restaurant was shut down,” he said.

When the business first set up shop in Mahtomedi, it was named Roman Market, and a fresh deli and meat market was its primary offering. It has expanded considerably in the intervening years by shifting location, incorporating a restaurant and bar and even developing a brewery and live performance space.

The new addition of a meat market is not only a creative way to respond to the challenges of the pandemic, Pilrain said, but also a return to the business’ roots. The grocery and deli will offer a wide variety of smoked meats and fish, as well as Boar’s Head deli meats and cheeses. Homemade dishes such as lasagna rolls, meatballs, and smoked chicken wings will also be available.

Scratch-made deli salads and sides such as potato and pasta salads will add some non-meat options.

“We started this company on having

a fresh market and deli 15 years ago, and customers expressed they missed that,” Pilrain said. “This is the time to bring it back on a bigger scale.”

Seeds and suet: a few ideas for what to feed birds this winter

Late winter can be a hard time for Minnesota birds.

Insects are dormant, buried under snow or deep within trees. Seeds and grains have been picked over, and food sources are getting more difficult to find. Providing winter bird food in your yard is a great way to give birds a boost in nutrients, as well as provide some cheer and entertainment for your family during the coldest season.

A bird’s diet is defined by the shape of its beak. The finches, sparrows and chickadees that visit winter feeders are perfectly suited to cracking small seeds.

Woodpeckers and nuthatches are adept at climbing up and down tree trunks and hammering under bark for dormant insects, but their beaks are adaptable enough to handle feeder seeds as well. Some birds have specific feeding preferences—dark-eyed juncos, for example, prefer to feed on the ground, and will often hang out beneath bird feeders.

Black-oil sunflower seeds are one of the most popular options for feeders. These seeds are high in fat, giving birds the energy they need to balance their metabolism in the cold weather. Good seed mixes often include sunflower seeds and millet, a small round seed that appeals to ground-feeding birds.

Cracked corn can attract a wide variety of animals in addition to birds. Sparrows, jays and turkeys will visit cracked corn on the ground, but so will squirrels and deer. Whole corn is often too large for small birds to consume; be cautious with corn if you live in an area with CWD deer feeding restrictions.

Unsalted peanuts are a good source of protein for many kinds of birds, especially blue jays, woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches. Peanut butter is another good source of the same nutrients, and can be used along with seeds, nuts, and pine cones to create fun homemade treats as an indoor project. Peanuts are also very appealing to other animals, especially squirrels.

Suet, or rendered animal fat, is also a great way to provide some extra energy. Giant pileated woodpeckers will flock to suet feeders just as willingly as tiny red-breasted nuthatches, and the behaviors of birds as they take turns or try to frighten off rivals is often entertaining to watch.

Fresh fruit such as grapes, berries, and slices of citrus, apples and bananas are a good food source you can often pull right from your own refrigerator. Fruit trees and shrubs, such as chokecherry and crabapple, are also an important winter resource for birds.

Wintering robins and cedar waxwings, which feed on insects in the summer, won’t eat seeds and rely on these fruits to get them through the cold months.

Mealworms appeal to almost every kind of winter bird, and are especially good for supporting the kinds of birds that don’t normally eat seeds, such as robins.

These birds will eat almost any food scrap, but benefit most from protein sources such as unsalted peanuts, walnuts or almonds. They will eagerly accept treats such as hard-boiled eggs and raw meat.

Many birds will eat bread, but it isn’t very high in nutrients and will not be as beneficial to them as foods that are higher in fat and protein. Many people avoid feeding corvids foods with a lot of salt and sugar because these birds may already be finding food high in these nutrients elsewhere. It’s better to give them something healthier to eat, just in case.

Stirring rally falls short for Bear girls in 0-2 week

The White Bear Lake Nordic Ski teams have competed in four meets with six more to go. In the conference’s pandemic format all skiers from one team start together in a wave, followed by the other teams each five minutes later. All scoring is in dual meet format since the races are time trials.

The boys beat Stillwater and Roseville in their first meet (a triangular), then lost to East Ridge/Park/Woodbury and Stillwater in duals. Bear senior Hayden Weddell has placed first in three meets and third in the other. Kolby Bachmeier is their No. 2 skier, followed by Trevor Locke and Tony Perfetti, all seniors. The fifth has been either junior Micah Fritz or freshmen Ian Cran or Tanner Hoel.

The Bear girls have not won as a team yet. Individually, Lauren Loppnow has won three meets and placed third in the other. The girls second through fourth skiers have been sophomores Madie Bystrom and Megan Ryan and junior Gianna Mcleod. Either Darah Torenvliet or Nicole Murphy, sophomores, have been fifth.

The Roseville meet was close for both boys and girls, each losing by just three points.

White Bear Lake mounted a furious rally to force overtime but lost to East Ridge 54-52 at home Friday evening, with Lauren Eckerle pouring in 27 points for the Bears.

The Bears (3-2) trailed 27-14 at halftime but caught up a 48-48 in the final minute on a three-point shot by Eckerle, who was 4-for-5 on three’s in the second half.

Earlier, Eckerle scored nine points in a minute, with a driving 3-play followed by two long 3-pointers, to pull the Bears within 41-39.

In overtime, the Bears took a brief 52-51 lead on a three-pointer by Merritt Larsen. They had the ball with 22 seconds left and the score tied, but East Ridge stole their inbounds pass, and took the lead on a driving layup by Grace Knupp with 7.7 seconds left. The Bears hustled upcourt and Larsen had an open 3-point attempt but it glanced off the rim at the buzzer.

“Losing Nevaeh was huge,” coach Jeremy Post reflected. “The kids played really hard and responded well to adversity from the first half.”

Neveah Hughes, the Bears’ top rebounder, scored 11 points before fouling out in the last few seconds of regulation.

Addie Bachmeier added seven points.

For East Ridge (4-1), Emily Christensen scored 18 points (four 3-pointers), Carly Rekstad 15 points (10-for-12 free shots) and Knupp had 11 points, including all six in OT. The Bears absorbed their first loss, to Roseville 56-48 there Tuesday, with Drew Johnston sinking 21 points for the Raiders (2-3). Eckerle netted 13 points and Tristian Lehner 12 for the Bears.

Bear cagers thump Roseville, fall short at East Ridge

White Bear Lake had five double-digit scorers in defeating Roseville Area 68-34 at home on Tuesday last week, then gave No. 12 ranked East Ridge a battle before losing 58-53 on the road.

Against Roseville, Jack Janicki netted 16 points, Kanye Raheem 13, Jack Misgen 11, and Max Steiner and Brock Taugner 10 each, for the Bears (2-3). Misgen sank a 3-pointer at the halftime horn to make the score 35-16. It was the first game of the season for Roseville.

At East Ridge, Raheem was red hot, pumping in a career-high 26 points, shooting 8-for-10 overall and 4-for-5 on three’s while making three steals. Janicki added 16 and Will Forsythe nine. East Ridge (3-1) had five players between nine and 12 points.

Roed, all-conference forward and team scoring leader the last two seasons, had started the current season playing juniors with Minnesota Magicians. But he’s back with the Bears now and contributed a goal and three assists his first two games.

“Lleyton wanted to play with the guys he grew up with,” coach Tim Sager said.

At Stillwater, the Bears (4-2) led 2-0 and 4-2 on goals by Roed, Andrew Larson, Ethan Moerke (with three seconds left in the second period) and Aiden Welch (eight seconds into the third). Aiden Anderson, Riley Skuza, Alex Corbett and Evan Murr countered for Stillwater, and in the OT, Corbett got the game-winner at 5:33.

Jackson Kohnen stopped 22 of 27 shots for the Bears, and Nolan LaCosse 34 of 38 for the Ponies.

White Bear Lake held Woodbury to 10 shots on goal in the 3-2 win. Tyler Bishop scored twice in the first period, the first on a power play, for a 2-1 Bears lead, and Moerke broke a 2-2 with a goal at 11:47 of the third. Chris Fotopoulos and Derek Marrier scored for Woodbury (0-4-2).

The Bears outshot Woodbury 35-10, with Royal goalie Kamdon Carlson stopping 42 shots. Torin Larson was in goal for the Bears with eight saves. Notching assists were Cade Kodytek (two), Lleyton Roed (two), Moerke and Max Hamstad.

White Bear Lake swimmers picked up their first win, over Irondale 97-76, on Thursday evening at Irondale. Individual winners for the Bears (1-2) were Aidan Cleary (individual medley, 2:20.16, and breaststroke, 1:11.85); William Jenkins (50 freestyle, 24.69, and 100 freestyle, 53.94); Anthony Parada Romero (diving, 145.70); and Calvin Weier (500 freestyle, 5:46.78). Irondale won all three relays.

Girl skaters clipped by Ponies, Rangers

White Bear Lake girls hockey is 0-4 after losing last week to the Stillwater Ponies 5-1 on Tuesday and the Forest Lake Rangers 2-1 on Saturday. Anne Lawrence scored for the Bears against Stillwater.

Josie Martin had goals for Stillwater (4-0). Ellie Sarauer scored on a power play against Forest Lake but the Bears finished 1-for-8 on power plays. Gabriella Caso De Salvo was in the nets for the Bears, stopping 23 of 25 shots.

Bear wrestlers win two of four duals

White Bear Lake wrestlers split four matches last week and have a 5-7 record for the season. The Bears beat Cretin-Derham Hall 54-30 and Minneapolis Southwest 66-12 on Thursday at CDH. They lost to Lakeville South 43-33 and Maple River 51-21 at home Saturday.

Going 4-0 for the week were Christian Carlson at 113, Dov Nathanson at 120, Matt Sloan at 195 and Dimitri Hatzis at 285. Winning three of four were Isaac Kolstad at 106 and Tyler Brock at 138.

Gymnasts beat Park in opener

The White Bear Lake gymnasts won their opening meet over Park of Cottage Grove 130.5 to 127.775 on Thursday evening. Grace Squires scored 36.275 and Laney Gunderson 34.05 for the top two spots all around. Both are juniors.

Eighth-grader Josie Mlejnek scored 30.10.

Squires won bars (9.125) and floor (9.275).

Gunderson won vault (9.075) and beam (9.25).

Mahtomedi boys basketball had no games last week as the lone game on their schedule, against Hill-Murray there Tuesday evening, was postponed due to Covid-19.

No other games for Mahtomedi will be affected. The Zephyrs are 4-0 and ranked No. 15 in Class 3A.

Hill-Murray hands Zephyr girls 1st loss 64-58

Mahtomedi girls basketball absorbed its first loss last week, then bounced back the next night with a win, improving to 4-1.

The No. 14 ranked Zephyrs lost to No. 3 Hill-Murray 64-58 at home Tuesday. They average 76 points against other teams, but the Pioneers’ defense was stifling all over the court. Zoie Centers scored 19 points, and Ella Hronski and Zoey Washington tallied 11 each, for Mahtomedi. Hill-Murray (4-1) was paced by Lilli Mackley with 20 points and Ella Runyan with 19.

“We really struggled from the free-throw line against a good, well-coached team that took advantage of that aspect of the game,” Zephyr coach Erika Zizzo said.

The Zephyrs won 81-67 at Minneapolis Southwest as Greta Schimnowski netted 20 points, Sonya Potthoff 18, Hronski 12, Centers 11, and Layla Gile 11.

In the past, Mahtomedi hosted a Saturday meet in January with three other teams, awards being presented to individual winners for varsity, JV, and those competing in both. This year with Covid rules in place, the Invite was an intramural event. Coach Debbie Driscoll divided girls into two teams, Blue and Gold, competing in different gyms: vault and beam in the main area, floor and bars in the regular practice space. Only one spectator per gymnast was allowed. The event turned out to be a fun exercise instead of intense competition.

The girls wore leotards from the past nine years as a throwback tribute to conference champion teams.

Mahtomedi’s defending state champion hockey team rolled past St. Paul Academy 6-2 last Tuesday and Simley 5-1 on Thursday, both at St. Croix Rec Center, improving to 3-2. The No. 5 ranked Zephyrs outshot SPA (23) by 43-18 with goals, in order, by JD Metz, Grant Dardis, Adam Johnson, David Wolsfeld (twice) and Owen Harrod. Tony Neubeck assisted on three goals. Cole Barr’e was in goal, making 16 saves. Against Simley (12-2), the Zephyrs gave up the first goal and took charge after that with a 44-27 shot advantage. In fact, he has been accepted to a college already (although he would like to apply to other institutions as well). The 6-foot, 155-pound forward had a goal and assist in a 4-2 win over Hudson on Saturday, another goal and assist in a 6-2 win over St. Paul Academy, and two goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over Simley. He leads the Zephyrs in scoring with ďŹ ve goals and four assists. On last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state champion team, Johnson had 17 goals (three in the state tournament) and 32 assists.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound junior got the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Men's Division II weekly award for his perforParker Fox mances Jan. 18-24. In the Wolves' 79-74 win over St. Cloud State, Fox logged 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. He followed with 21 points, 21 rebounds (most of any player this year in any NCAA division), and four blocks in an 81-72 win over the Huskies the next night. Fox is averaging 20.6 points and 10.4 rebounds for the 10-0 Wolves. He averaged 19.9 points and 8.8 rebounds last year. In high school, Fox led Mahtomedi to its first state tournament appearance since 1961 his senior year when he averaged 22 points.

Overall it was a rather uneventful past week, weather-wise. Lots of clouds and very little sun with fairly mild temperatures. This has been pretty much the theme all winter. We ďŹ nished January 6-7Âş warmer than normal, with snowfall totaling 7-8 inches. While we did drop below 0Âş here in the northern suburbs, the Airport failed to drop below 0Âş in January for only the 3rd time in the past 150 years. Last Wednesday was the Airports best chance but a cloud cover overnight kept temperatures above 0Âş, while northern Minnesota was hit with readings dropping to -35Âş in Cotton and -33Âş in Ely. Looking at the temperatures in the latest forecast, the Airport's run of sub 0Âş is likely to come to an end. Brrrr.
