New sports center unveiled on dome footprint

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — It looks like teams will hit new indoor turf this fall.

Site plans were presented Jan. 28 to the city’s Planning Commission for the address at 1440 East County Road E, the site of the former sports dome.

The 82,000-square-foot turf facility will have the same footprint as the dome, only shorter by 80 feet. The roof, supported by trusses instead of air, will be 56 feet high or 20 feet lower than

the old dome. It will hold one full-sized soccer field and have an additional 49 parking spots.

Once home to soccer clubs and softball teams, the former dome met its demise in an April 2018 snowstorm. The collapsed structure wasn’t worth salvaging, so the county took the insurance payout and started looking at options.

What was proposed to commissioners is a design that the architect compared to a pole barn, “but nicer.”

MAPLEWOOD — An animated video showing a birds-eye view of Rush Line's downtown White Bear station is Ramsey County's way of "demystifying" how buses will operate.

County Planning Specialist Frank Alarcon directed members of the Rush Line Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) to a YouTube site he said "demystifies how the station will work."

The video shows buses turning off Highway 61 at Seventh Street and lining up along a platform on a one-way Washington Avenue behind Beartown Bar & Grill. After passengers board through one of three doors, departing buses then proceed to Eighth Street to access Highway 61 south.

A signal may be installed at the Eighth Street/61 intersection, according to the narration. Other planned safety improvements are new sidewalks on the south side of Eighth Street between Washington Avenue and Hwy. 61 and the north side of Eighth Street between Washington and Division.

Herbert Waldo Tousley III Herbert Waldo Tousley III of Mahtomedi, MN passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, January 30 at the age 67.

Loving husband, father, and grandfather. Preceded in death by his father, Herbert W. Tousley, Jr. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Jill Lambert Tousley; three children, Herbert W. Tousley IV (Kristi), Meghan Tousley (Ben Threinen), and Alexandra Schack (Brian); mother, Ann Luther; brother, Richard Tousley (Lesette), and sister, Sue Keswani (Ashwini). Known as Papa to his five grandchildren, Griffin (5), Harrison (5), Rory (3), Gwenyth (1), and Theodore (1). Herb was born on October 30, 1952 to Herbert & Ann Tousley.

He grew up on the shores of White Bear Lake, graduated from White Bear High School in 1970, earned his BS in business from Colorado State University and his MBA from the University of St. Thomas. Herb was a prominent figure in the real estate industry. He was the director of The Real Estate program at The University of St Thomas and The Shenehon Center for Real Estate. He served as a director of CoreNet Minnesota and CCIM Minnesota Dakotas chapter. Herb also founded the Minnesota Real Estate Hall of Fame and was appointed as a Distinctive Fellow to NAIOP. In spite of Herb’s numerous professional accomplishments, he was most proud of his active involvement in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Historic restaurant approaches closing time Valentine's Day weekend will be the last hurrah for a restaurant that has been around Mahtomedi for about 60 years.

The Lakeside Club will close its doors for good Feb. 16. The Mahmood family has owned the business since the 1940s.

The supper club was started by Al Mahmood and his children, Paul, Cheryl, Craig and Susan, have operated it over the years.

The supper club once had 5,000 members from across the Twin Cities. Members paid an annual fee and could eat whenever they wanted. The club was private, meaning that to join, you had to be invited by another member. Mahmood sold the club in the ’80s and it began to operate as a public restaurant.

When the Mahmoods bought it back, it was kept a restaurant with a club culture.

The club was once in a movie — in a scene from the Cohen brothers’ movie “Fargo.” It was a snowy scene with a squad car parked in front of the restaurant. Al Mahmood died in 2004 and his wife Marcella two years later. Their eight children were all involved in the restaurant at some point.

The Mahmoods have planned to close the restaurant a couple times over the last decade but

The food shelf helps members of the community who deal with food insecurity. Food is distributed at the Vadnais Heights Commons on the third Saturday of every month, from 9-10 a.m. January through October, and 9-11 a.m. in November and December. Artist Kari Maxwell will exhibit her work at White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church, 328 Maple Street, Mahtomedi, Feb. 9 through March 8.

Since she began exhibiting in 2003, Maxwell’s work has primarily focused on animals as the subjects of her paintings. In her upcoming exhibit, rabbits, buffalo and lions may appear to be a random collection. This couldn't be further from the truth. As Maxwell states, "These animals make themselves known to me in such unexpected ways and there is a common thread of intuitive support that runs between them."

Children’s Performing Arts “Frozen Jr.” Opens Feb. 7 The Children’s Performing Arts (CPA) production of “Frozen Jr.” opens Feb. 7. CPA will be one of the first theater companies to bring to the stage this timeless tale of two sisters pulled apart by a mysterious secret.

This show has 100 kids in the cast and nearly 20 middle school and high school kids helping behind the scenes. The stage boasts a set with a snow machine, special effects, and over 200 costumes.

The Birchwood Village City Council will hold a town hall meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, for residents to discuss how to pay for road work going forward. The outcome of the meeting will determine how the current Lake Avenue road project and future road work will be paid for. The two options being considered are 1) to assess only the properties that receive an increase in property valuation from the work, and 2) to levy all residents for all city road work through property taxes. With the first option, residents will only pay when work is done to their streets and the amount will depend on the appraised value that the project has on the individual property. With the second option, all residents will pay for all road work citywide and the amount will be based off of the individual property tax rate. All residents are encouraged to attend.

Jury duty

s I opened the mail, I thought, “This can’t be happening.”

I think we all feel the same way — that little bit of hesitation when we get a summon for Jury Duty, thinking we don’t want to do this. One must really think about it once every four years. That’s the least we can do. It’s our civic duty and it’s a privilege to be part of our judicial system. Besides, this is another part of what makes America, America.

Once the letter was opened and it was confirmed that it was in fact a jury duty summons, it was up to me to fi ll out the simple qualification questionnaire.

This was to be completed on or online, “but not both.”

When responding to the questions, be accurate and succinct.

As I finished reading through my jury summons paperwork, I was instructed to call in at 5 p.m. the night before jury selection to get my instructions. My first morning was cleared of duty so I had to call in again at 11:30 a.m. to see if I was needed for the afternoon. I set a reminder on my phone and when I called, the voicemail was clear and easy to understand.

Within seconds, I knew I was part of the selection process.

After traveling down I-35E, the courthouse is an easy exit on Wacouta Street to Kellogg Boulevard where you take a right and go a few blocks to Ramsey County District Court. There are several parking garages nearby with an easy skyway connecting to the courthouse. Do not use a parking meter as if you are selected as a juror since you will not be able to leave or add time to your meter even if you have the smart phone app. Lowry Garage and Victory Ramp are listed on the back of the jury summons paperwork and may give you a discount.

It’s key that you be in the waiting room on time or before. If you are late, it will be disruptive and you will miss some of the videos, as well have others stare at you and feeling uncomfortable. You will be given a booklet to read. The dress code is professional as you may be entering a courtroom. Bring some things to fi ll your time because if you are not called into jury duty you may have to wait on the grounds.

I couldn’t afford not to be working so I quickly logged in and began to work as others around me were doing puzzles and games or reading on electronic devices. Since the cell phone signal is low inside the courthouse, I had to log into WiFi. You wouldn’t want to do any banking transactions while you wait.

Remember, you are entering a secure government building and will go through security screening. It’s not as strict as TSA but has a similar approach. Do not touch the red “stop” button on the baggage scanner as that shuts down the whole system.

As you proceed down the stairs to the waiting room, have your jury summons notice ready so they can scan it and get you into the system quickly. They also have kiosks where scanning is available. Everyone in the building was very helpful in informing us where to go and helping if we looked lost.

I was delighted to go through the process and was intrigued that I made it through the jury questioning. I admit I was relieved that I wasn’t ultimately put on a trial. Consider jury duty a service to your country and smile when you are selected to serve.

Winston Churchill stated these words and they resonate today.

As we start the new year, we continually ask ourselves, what can we do different or new this year to meet our needs or goals? And more broadly, we look at our community, to think about how we can give more to meet the needs of others.

Nonprofits in our community embrace those in need. That is their mission. Who knows where it starts.

It could be people who have a loved one with a severe mental or physical need and take up a cause; have a personal mission to help society beyond a for profit career; or come together as faith communities to develop a mission to care for a group Movers & in need. For many, it’s as simple as recognizing that one can serve Shakers a mission for community service professional and personal Jim Rathburn alongside ambitions.

As I reflect on what I’ve learned ffrom th the iimpressive work of others in our nonprofit community, I recognize it was part of what attracted my family and I to White Bear Lake and continues to impress me today. A thriving nonprofit community with so many people involved in making this a better (the best!) place to live and impacting lives.

The rule of three comes to mind – a principle that suggests a trio of events or characters is more humorous, satisfying, and/or effective than other numbers. Examples: the Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the Three Musketeers. Similarly, adjectives are often grouped in threes to emphasize an idea. So, in threes, what does a nonprofit do and how best can it work? Experience, strength and hope.

Experience Great people with a vision to do good work have a vision born from experience. Something has touched them and they need to give. Those who want to help can bring their life experiences to the table. Success in business or personal achievements can bring acumen that will foster success of a mission. Network and make friends with those who can share their experience and know what it takes to get the job done.

Success and funds needed for an organization often come from those who share experience.

Strength There is power in numbers. The success of the mission is stronger when folks commit to the cause.

Like a fire, it starts with a spark and becomes a powerful source of light, warmth, and vision. It doesn’t always work out they way you want it to, but deep inner fortitude, diverse views melding together, and a “person by person” strength can often overcome hurdles.

Hope Reach out to those who might give of their time, talent or treasure by appealing to what is in all of us – to give people hope that their situation can be improved. How often does an act of kindness coming our way restore that hope? Let those who can help the mission know they are giving hope to people.

As we move through the new year, I look forward to seeing what our community achieves this year knowing we all have the experience and strength to provide hope.

Sidewalks proposed in 2020 street projects

WHITE BEAR LAKE— The City Council on Tuesday, Jan. 28 received a feasibility report from City Engineer Paul Kauppi regarding the 2020 street reconstruction project and 2020 mill and overlay project.

Kauppi explained that routine maintenance work needs to be done on all roads periodically, and a feasibility report looks at the current condition of pavement and other features as well as the estimated project cost.

He said that work needs to be done on Cottage Park Road and Bellaire Avenue this year. The street reconstruction portion is estimated to be about $1.8 million dollars.

“This will bring us up to about 93 percent of the roadways reconstructed,” Kauppi said.

The overlay project will span over about 3.3 miles at an estimated cost of $2.2 million.

Kauppi also noted that 79 out of 85 miles within the city are complete. The last few miles will be completed over the next 5-10 years.

“The next step after tonight is to hold a public improvement hearing. Staff recommends that the council adopt the resolution,” Kauppi concluded.

Councilman Dan Jones said he has heard questions from residents, as well as misinformation floating around about the sidewalk portion of the project.

Several sidewalk additions are included in the mill and overlay project, including Elm, Highland and Bellaire.

Kauppi said when they held the informational meeting last November for Elm Street, there were only a handful of people who showed up and not many voiced concerns or voiced opposition to the sidewalk.

City aims to improve energy use

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The city, in partnership with a local business, recently completed a survey on energy use in six municipal buildings.

At its Jan. 28 meeting, the council heard from several people with Trane, a local business that specializes in total comfort system needs. Trane partnered with the city to look at the building performance of several city buildings, including the new White Bear Lake Sports Center.

Trane senior energy engineer Jeff Seewald said, “We have been engaged with the city since mid-summer, doing some work around the buildings. We’ve also been engaged with the school district.”

Seewald said given their local connection, the company saw a unique opportunity to make more of an impact on some projects.

“We saw a way to work with the school district and develop some curriculum,” he said.

Trane has offered some student internships through the career pathways program at White Bear Lake High School. One of the interns is junior Sophie Davis.

Trane performed a complimentary survey of six different city buildings to look at lighting and other features to see if there were ways in which the city could improve energy usage.

“The sports center was more of an immediate need.

You did a project there in 2018 and a lot of good things were done that should improve performance and the functionality of the environment,” Seewald said.

However, everyone assumed the energy bills would go down, but they went up.

Seewald presented Trane’s findings to the council

and reported that the electric preheat is driving up the cost and more could be done to optimize air ventilation.

Seewald stressed that the construction of the building is good and the lighting and insulation is improved since the updates in 2018, but the main issue is the control of air coming in from outside of the building.

“I think they did the right things in that project, there are just some quirks that weren’t addressed,” said Seewald.

“There is no blame. It’s not common practice to have buildings commissioned immediately following construction. Sometimes it will be done immediately following, but there is an added cost to have it commissioned,” Hiniker said.

Because the building wasn’t performing as well as anyone had hoped, Trane looked at it for no cost.

Councilman Kevin Edberg asked how much cost savings could be realized by addressing the issues Trane found. Seewald said there would be about $7,000 in annual savings if the electric preheat issue were addressed.

In other news, City Manager Ellen Hiniker reminded the council of the 2019-2022 vision that was established collectively. It reads, “White Bear Lake provides a safe, attractive and welcoming environment with a true sense of community for our residents, visitors and businesses.”

Hiniker went on to read the mission statement, which was recently shortened to read, “Our mission is to support a high quality of life in White Bear Lake by providing good value for the services we deliver, preserving our heritage and purposefully guiding our future.”

She said the values, mission and vision are used to create strategic objectives for the next three years.

Township ponders nuisance property

A bit of old business resurfaced at the end of last month as the White Bear Township Board discussed what to do regarding a nuisance property at 2105 Stillwater Street.

The structure on the property has been in a state of disrepair for several years, and the board discussed the problem in a public hearing held Nov. 18.

At that time, the board passed a resolution of abatement. The owner of the property was given 30 days to complete a list of improvements before the township would raze the dwelling.

Building Official Mike Johnson reported to the board Jan. 22 that he has observed minimal effort to improve the property, and that none of the requirements for improvement have been completed.

Town Attorney Chad Lemmons told the board that he had spoken with the property owner the previous week and advised him to attend the Jan. 22 meeting, but the owner was not present that evening.

"My recommendation is ... if you decide to abate the property—raze it—we should get a court order approving it and allowing the township to go forward," Lemmons said.

Board members expressed sympa-

thy with the owner of the house.

"I don't think anybody wants to see the house torn down," said Board Member Scott McCune.

"The township, as a whole, doesn't want to be this harsh to one of our residents," said Board Chair Ed Prudhon.

Lemmons said that the process of issuing a court order would likely take at least 60 days, which would give the township time to explore alternative options with the property owner. "One thing that could happen, once you start the action, is you can always reach a settlement with them," Lemmons said.

The board approved the issuance of a court order to confirm the abatement, according to Lemmons' recommendation. Since the process will take at least 60 days, board members expressed their hope for improvements to the property during that interval.

"We're looking for actual demonstrated activity," McCune said.

The board scheduled another public hearing on the matter on Feb. 19.

In other action, the board: • Heard a fourth quarter construction report from Building Official Mike Johnson. In 2019, the township issued a total of 603 total building permits, including 10 new home construction permits,

573 miscellaneous residential permits, 16 commercial construction permits and four demolition projects. These numbers are consistent with the number of permits issued in the past several years.

• Reviewed Ordinance No. 54, which deals with city fees and charges.

Board Chair Prudhon took a close look at the suggested updates to the fee structure and noted that while most building permit fees showed a 20 percent increase from the previous standard, the permit fee for property improvements valued at $500,000 to $1 million increased by 62 percent. Clerk/ Treasurer Patrick Christopherson said he would do more research and figure out why this jump in price was so extreme. The board voted to approve all changes to the fee structure with the exception of the fees for permits in the $500,000-$1 million range, which will be reconsidered after more information is presented.

• Discussed where to include the township's mission, vision and values on the official township website. The board opted to put the information under the Town Board tab.

The next township board meeting was scheduled for Feb. 3, after press time. Meetings are held at Heritage Hall, located at 4200 Otter Lake Road.

Mayor Jo Emerson said that she’s had some questions regarding the decision to put a sidewalk on Elm. Some have said the sidewalk is proposed for the side of the street where the houses have the smallest yards, so adding a sidewalk will take up more of the yards. People have asked why the sidewalk isn’t being added to the other side of the street where the yards are bigger.

Kauppi said the lots are generally the same size on both sides of the street, but the houses might be farther back on one side. He said there’s also utility conflicts to get around and the south side has some topography challenges with steep yards and retaining walls.

“That’s good information to have,” said Emerson.

Kauppi said residents who will be affected also got specific notices on the projects.

Jones said he wanted to get all his questions out at the council meeting so that when they have the public hearing, they know how to answer questions from the residents.

The council unanimously approved to accept the feasibility report and ordered the public hearing to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Historic agreement to protect children concludes The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office (RCAO) formally concluded its fouryear oversight of the civil settlement agreement with the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis last week.

The primary objective of the agreement was to transform the organizational culture of the Archdiocese into one that is vigilant about ensuring that no child will ever again become the victim of clergy sex abuse.

“When we entered into this agreement, we knew it was an unconventional approach to a very complex and painful legacy that took a heavy toll on countless lives over a long period of time,” said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi. “It is only through the dedication of many individuals within my office, the Court, the Archdiocese and the church community that we are here today. I want to thank my staff for their tireless efforts, Archbishop Hebda for his leadership and, most of all, the victims for their trust and patience that this process would yield meaningful results.”

At the outset of the criminal and civil charges on June 5, 2015, the RCAO set forth three goals: Hold the Archdiocese accountable for its actions (or inactions) through an admission of wrongdoing and an acknowledgement of a violation of the statute. Provide justice for the victims and the community. Instill confidence in the public that these crimes will never happen again.

In 2012, (then) father Curtis Wehmeyer pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court to three felony counts of criminal sexual conduct with two minors and 17 felony counts of possession of child pornography and was sentenced to five years in prison. Soon after, questions arose about whether the Archdiocese handled the knowledge of his abuse appropriately and whether any additional cases might be addressed. After determining that sufficient evidence did not exist to file charges against (then) Archbishop John Nienstedt, the RCAO launched a 20-month investigation, reviewing over 170,000 documents and interviewing

more than 50 witnesses. The effort uncovered a pattern of conduct by the Archdiocese in its handling of cases involving the reported abuse of children at the hands of members of the clergy.

On June 5, 2015, the RCAO took the unprecedented step in filing both criminal and civil charges against the corporation of the Archdiocese for its failure to protect children. In late 2015, the RCAO announced a landmark civil settlement agreement with the Archdiocese to protect children. The three-year agreement required an organizational structure tasked with executing the core components.

Key measures along the way included two independent audits, restorative justice efforts and increased victim assistance measures, judicial oversight to enforce compliance on a rolling six-month basis as well as the strengthening of safe environment training and reporting standards, requiring strict adherence to a policy to report any new violation that came to the attention of anyone in the Archdiocese.

In 2016, the agreement was amended, and a final major piece fell into place as the Archdiocese, now under the leadership of Archbishop Bernard Hebda, formally admitted wrongdoing in court.

This cleared the way for the dismissal of the criminal case, extended court oversight under the civil agreement, provided for one additional outside audit and allowed the release of several key investigative files. As County Attorney Choi noted at that time: “Without such an admission by the Archdiocese, or a determination by a court, there could never be true accountability. It was not only Curtis Wehmeyer who harmed children. It was the Archdiocese as well.”

Over the next three and a half years, the Archdiocese and the RCAO met in Ramsey County District Court for seven separate six-month reports per the agreement as well as three independent audits as required by the civil settlement agreement.

Vadnais Heights • A disturbance was reported at 11 p.m. Jan. 19 in the 3900 block of Clover Avenue after a father and son entered into a physical scuffle because the son had not cleaned up the kitchen. No arrests were made.

• Apartment neighbors in the 600 block of County Road D were reported for disorderly conduct Jan. 20 after the two women, 26 and 36, got into an argument over parking on the street.

• Employees of Community Involvement Programs in the 300 block of Oak Grove Parkway reported catalytic converters stolen from two vehicles parked in the business lot overnight Jan. 20-21.

• Employees of the Kwik Trip in the 3200 block of Highway 61 on Jan. 22 identified a suspect for using stolen credit cards to make purchases on

several occasions in the recent past. The investigation is now underway.

• A Centerville man, 22, was arrested Jan. 23 at the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E for stealing a tire.

• A St. Paul woman reported her 1998 Honda CR-V was stolen from an employee parking lot in the 11000 block of County Road E. Jan. 23. Her vehicle was recovered the next day at Tamarack Nature Center in the 5200 block of Otter Lake Road in White Bear Township.

• A Marine on St. Croix woman reported her unlocked vehicle with the keys inside was stolen from a Suzanne Avenue driveway Jan. 24. The St. Paul Police Department recovered the vehicle two days later in the 100 block of Isabel Street.

• A new employee of a business in the 3200 block of Meadow Brook Court on Jan. 25 reported being told by email to go out and buy $500 dollars worth of Amazon gift cards for staff. Alas, it was all a scam.

White Bear Township • A South St. Paul man, 34, was arrested Jan. 22 in the 4200 block of Fisher Lane on a South St. Paul Police Department warrant.

• A White Bear Lake man, 33, and a female, 33, of no permanent address, were arrested at 1:38 a.m.

Jan. 23 on Highway 96 and White Bear Parkway for narcotics violations following a traffic stop for a missing front license plate. As deputies followed the subjects south on I-35E, they conducted mobile computer research and noted that the rear license plate did not match the vehicle identification number. The vehicle was towed as it was not insured and because ownership was uncertain. Narcotics were found during an inventory search prior to the tow.

• A resident in the 1700 block of County Road H2 on Jan. 23 reported the theft of two license plates from a vehicle parked in the driveway overnight Jan. 21-22. The complainant bought new plates.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood • An ongoing and escalating neighbor dispute on Wildwood Avenue over the property line and whose snow pile was entitled to occupy that boundary was reported Dec. 30. The verbal argument was quickly followed by snow flying into driveways from both directions. Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies persuaded the feuding neighbors to stay away from each other for the rest of the evening. The combatants complied, due largely to a threat that they both would receive citations if they made deputies come out there again.

Dellwood • A resident on Overlook Road on Dec. 31 reported receiving a Chase Freedom credit card that she never applied for. The complainant said she thought someone had fraudulently opened the account.

• A resident on Bayhill Road on Jan. 3 reported that her son had received 20 prank calls from a private number between Dec. 14-20. The complainant said that the calls stopped immediately after the complainant's husband answered the phone and “told the silence on the other end” to stop call-

ing. The complainant said she wanted to document the calls and the fact that her son was bullied and sexually harassed at school. Deputies advised changing her number.

Grant • A Grant man was arrested at the request of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) Jan. 2 in the 11000 block of Julianne Avenue N. on a HCSO disorderly conduct warrant.

• A resident of the 10000 block of 75th Street N. on Jan. 2 reported a check stolen from his mailbox. The suspect had tried to cash the check at a local bank. The suspect's driver's license and the original check were collected and placed into evidence.

• An SOS from someone having an emergency on White Bear Lake at 7:29 p.m. Dec. 29 turned out to be several ice fishermen in no danger at all who admitted to shining the SOS signal with their flashlights for no given reason. Multiple agencies sped to the scene of a reported person falling through the ice. The Mahtomedi Fire and Rescue team using an airboat to search the lake eventually located the fishermen.

• A business owner on Wildwood Road on Dec. 30 reported a $750 catalytic converter cut off a plow parked in their back lot.

• A resident on Juniper Street reported a greeting card with nothing of value inside taken from her mailbox overnight Dec. 28-29.

• A vehicle reported stolen Jan. 1 from the 3000 block of Century Avenue N. turned out to have only been moved by the complainant's friend.

• A strange man reported for prowling around a front yard in the 1000 block of Park Avenue at 12:39 a.m. Dec. 29 and chased off by the complainant's dog turned out to be a deer, after a surveillance video was reviewed.

• Forced burglary of an occupied residence on Old Wildwood Road was reported Jan. 1.

• Three juvenile males were arrested on Stillwater Road following a report of a fight at 4:52 a.m. Dec. 29. On arrival at the scene, deputies noted the obvious indication of a fight and

The complainant said he didn't know if he was missing any mail, but he saw numerous mailboxes opened on his street. A resident on Hickory Street on Jan. 2 reported five open mailboxes on her street and mail from

A resident on Stillwater Road reported a package stolen from the common mailbox area. Available video footage of that last incident is pending.

• An unidentified male was arrested Jan. 2 on Stillwater Road on a felony warrant. During the arrest, the suspect actively resisted and tried to flee.

• A broken and abandoned bicycle was found by deputies Jan. 3 on Highway 244 just east of Wedgewood Drive and left for disposal by the public works department.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited Jan. 4 on westbound Stillwater Road at Warner Avenue N. for tabs that expired in January 2019 after deputies observed him turn left onto Stillwater Road from Hilton Trail N. with expired tabs.

Pine Springs • A Minnesota motorist was cited at 3:55 a. m. Dec. 28 on northbound I-694 over Highway 36 for tabs that expired in August, a malfunctioning headlight and marijuana in a motor vehicle, after being pulled over for both equipment violations and the heavy marijuana fumes billowing from the vehicle. An even stronger odor of pot at the traffic stop lead to a search of the vehicle, which uncovered a baggie full of the stuff and a half-used joint in the driver's door handle.

Trail group hopes for $4 million slice of bonding pie

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Lake Links Association Co-chair Mike Brooks was prepared with maps and stats to show members of the Senate Capital Investment Committee after their bus ride around the lake. Century College was next on the Jan. 29 itinerary to hear a Lake Links pitch for bonding money. The stop was part of a three-day metro tour to view projects requesting funding.

The 10-mile trail around White Bear Lake is 80% complete. Major elements were funded by the state in 2018 and the trail association is hoping the Legislature will grant another $4 million in 2020 to fi nish the remaining 2 miles.

Those 2 miles are the most dangerous along the route, Brooks said.

What Lake Links wants is a separated 10-foot trail adjacent to Hwy. 96 along the north end of the lake. The state road has 11,000 cars per day going 40 mph, Brooks pointed out.

The master plan provided the group also includes the Hwy. 244 corridor through Dellwood that needs a separated 8- to 10-foot trail along an upgraded roadway.

The right of way is there, Brooks said. Research from 1849 on right-ofway sections show there is adequate room, 33 feet from the centerline, to build the trail on 244.

“You’ve been instrumental in helping us get funding to the 80% level,” he told the senators. “We have 20% left. The trail around the

lake is central. It’s a hub, a backbone to local systems. It’s a very important route.”

Projects receiving bonding money must have skin in the game by providing a 50% match. According to Brooks, Lake Links has provided 67% of the funding or a value of $8,073,000. He was prepared to explain how the trail association arrived at that fi gure, but the senators didn’t ask.

Mostly, the match comes in the way of real estate. “We have had land donations from every single community in the area,” Brooks

said. “Families are extending land.”

He mentioned Joe and Taffy Benson, who donated almost 1,000 feet for the trail, and Blanche and Thane Hawkins, who contributed a significant trail connection.

The Lake Links co-chair added that White Bear Lake has 40 public access points along the route. “If you want to dip a toe or drop a small boat, you can do it,” he said. “Only five points have dedicated parking, making bike and pedestrian access valuable and essential.”

noting that the Lake Links effort has received “strong, bipartisan” support. “In my 24 years in the Senate, I have never seen a grassroots volunteer group work this hard to develop this vision,” he said.

In closing, Brooks reminded the committee members that “if we have safety for people, we have mobility and connectivity and economic impact. We are committed and we will get this done.”

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • A 61-year-old and 40-year-old were arrested for narcotics in the 3200 block of White Bear Avenue Jan. 23.

• A car window and door mirror were broken while the vehicle was parked in the 1700 block of Fourth Street Jan. 24.

• Use of counterfeit currency was reported in the 4500 block of Centerville Road Jan. 24. A 36-year-old Vadnais Heights resident was later located and arrested.

She was found in possession of numerous fake $20 bills.

• A criminal sexual conduct investigation was opened near the 4700 block of Sandra Lane Jan. 25. One adult male is in custody and awaiting charges.

• Sometime overnight Jan. 25, someone stole two new garage door opener kits and a stepladder from a work truck parked in the 3600 block of Highland Avenue.

• A White Bear Lake man was arrested for fourth-degree DWI after being involved in a property damage accident near County Road E East and McKnight Road Jan. 25.

• A tenant reported theft of mail in the 4600 block of Second Avenue Jan. 27.

• Theft of a red 2010 Toyota Camry occurred in the 4500 block of Bald Eagle Avenue Jan. 27. A suspect was identified. The investigation is ongoing.

The strange love lives of white-throated sparrows

The old saying "opposites attract" might be questionable advice for human romantic partners, but it perfectly describes the love lives of a common backyard bird: the white-throated sparrow.

During the birds’ migration, you might recognize a white-throated sparrow scratching for seeds under your feeders.

On any visit to the north woods in summer, you're likely to hear their song "Oh-sweet-Canada-Canada-Canada."

They look ordinary enough: brown sparrows, like many of the others that visit the feeder. The bright white patch under their bill is a dead giveaway as to their identity. The bold black and white stripes on their head, with little spots of bright yellow, give them a little bit more pizzazz than some of their plainer cousins.

Take a closer look, and you'll notice that some of the white-throated sparrows have a slightly different appearance.

Rather than flashy black-and-white stripes on their head, they have muted tan-and-brown stripes instead.

For years, naturalists believed that the tan-striped birds were simply immature sparrows that hadn't yet grown into their adult colors. It took years of data collection and research to discover that something a little more complicated was going on.

Researchers found that tan-striped sparrows stayed tan-striped for life.

The colors were permanent. Not only that, but about half of the entire adult population was tan-striped. Field studies noticed that almost all mated pairs of white-throated sparrows consist of one tan-striped parent and one white-striped parent.

Close observation showed that not only did color matter in choosing a mate: it also seemed to be an accurate predictor of the personality of each bird.

White-striped birds of both sexes were found to be more aggressive, while tan-striped birds were found to be more nurturing. Aggressive males sing often to ward off other males and defend their territories rigorously by chasing enemies away. Aggressive females also sing and chase away intruders.

However, tan-striped birds were more docile in personality. Tan-striped males sang less often than their white-striped counterparts, and tan-striped females hardly sang at all. But on average, both tan-striped males and females brought more food back to their nestlings than white-striped birds did.

For females of both color variations, the nurturing tan-striped males seem to make the most desirable mates.

Males of both colors seem to see whitestriped females as the most desirable.

However, the aggressive nature of whitestriped females means that they often outcompete the more docile tan-striped females. Once the nurturing tan-striped males have been paired off, the tanstriped females select from the "leftover" white-striped males.

However the pairing shakes out, most hatchlings end up with one parent of each color morph: one that will defend the nest with vigor and one that will bring back plenty of food.

For generations, this strategy has worked well. Pairings between individuals of the same color variation have rarely been observed, but as naturalist Kenn Kaufman theorized in an Audubon article on this topic, they probably make for unsuccessful parents. Tan-striped couples might fail at

defending their territory and protecting their young, while white-striped couples might fail to bring home enough food to keep their hatchlings alive and healthy.

Effectively, this system means that white-throated sparrows have four different sexes, Kaufman explained.

Scientists know that the chromosomes of the two-color morphs differ in key ways, and that the same chromosome that controls stripe color also includes a wide range of personality traits.

And for their offspring: the stripe

colors of each nest of hatchlings will be split nearly 50/50, preserving the population balance.

White-throated sparrows are unique among birds for this particular romantic practice, but there are still many unanswered questions about their complicated love lives.

In the meantime, watch closely, and enjoy the sweet song of these fascinating sparrows as they return. Spring migration is just around the corner.

SPORTS CENTER: Construction starts this spring FROM PAGE 1A

“Still, it is a unique structure,” said Dustin Rehkamp, senior project manager with BWBR Architects.

The building will be constructed with pre-engineered metal panels. The existing north, south and east foundation walls will remain in place but because the structure is shorter, a portion of the existing structure and pavement will be demolished.

A wall with multiple shades of gray will now be a single gray color to help offset budget constraints.

In his report, City Planner Nolan Wall said the county indicated that budget constraints limited the project scope. It is a fieldhouse-type facility, intentionally different from the existing Sports Center next door, he said.

“Staff feels the cost-efficient reconstruction of this structure warrants acceptance of the proposed exterior design,” Wall told commissioners, and recommended approval of the plan.

“This is a prominent community feature,” noted Wall. “We are appreciative of the county’s efforts to rebuild this structure. They didn’t have to replace it.”

Ramsey County Facilities Manager Ryan Ries thanked Wall, City Engineer Jesse Farrell and City Administrator Kevin Watson for being good partners on the project. “Obviously the collapse of the dome was not something we anticipated; nor did we have a set of money sitting around to allocate for this, so it’s been a challenge for us and I want to recognize the city for its support,” he said.

No one spoke during a public hearing. The Planning Commission unanimously approved the PUD

and site plan, with the usual conditions. The application next goes before the City Council.

The county budgeted $6 million last year for the project. That included $100,000 for a naming rights consultant; $146,000 to demolish the old dome; $258,000 for phase one design/build and an estimated $5.5 million for phase two design/build.

Financing will come from $1.6 million in insurance proceeds from the 2018 collapse; $623,000 from the year-end Vadnais Sports Center Fund balance; proceeds from a potential naming rights agreement, amount unknown; and the balance a reallocation from delayed parks and recreation capital improvement projects.

Construction will start this spring and be completed this fall.

A raised platform allows riders to enter and exit the bus comfortably. Since the White Bear station is end of the line for the 14-mile route, a driver restroom facility is planned adjacent to the shelter.

According to Alarcon, four to six buses per hour will not impact traffic flow on 61 or local streets.

Also noted: the project is mostly in public right of way.

The PAC heard updates on the bus rapid transit project from county staff and consultants at its meeting Jan. 23 at the Maplewood Community Center. Open to the public, the next meeting is March 26 at 2:30 p.m.

Section 106 required Historian Barbara Howard with MnDOT's Cultural Resources division discussed her role in the Rush Line project. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 requires federal agencies to evaluate impacts of federally funded projects on historic properties. Howard is helping identify architectural structures and archaeological sites along the route to assess potential adverse effects.

One possible site is the LS&M (Lake Superior & Mississippi) rail corridor that stretched from St. Paul to Duluth through White Bear Lake. The railway traveled within right of way that was later purchased by Ramsey County for future transit use and is currently the Bruce Vento Trail.

Rush Line would share the rail right of way with the Bruce Vento Trail.

Howard explained that the LS&M rail corridor is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is noted as an important fi rst and direct rail connection between St. Paul and the Port of Duluth. Rail service started in 1870 with stops at White Bear's downtown depot. "It has 100 years of significance to tourism in White Bear Lake," she noted.

Features of interest include 1868 and later roadways, grade-separation structures, depots, retaining walls and "sense of path between destinations." Between 700 and 800 sites along the corridor have been surveyed as part of MnDOT's study; about 3% require more information, Howard told the group.

The fi nal Section 106 document goes to the Federal Transit Administration, which fi nances public transportation systems like the Rush Line project. "Our goal is a fi nding of no significant impact to get environmental clearance," Howard said.

Station area planning documents should be ready in March, according to staff. There are 21 stations along the corridor from Union Depot in St. Paul to White Bear Lake, connecting what the county calls: "100,000 diverse Minnesotans."

Other notable milestones: resolutions of support from municipalities is anticipated in summer 2020. That support is required before the project transitions from Ramsey County to the Metropolitan Council, scheduled for April 2021.

Construction is expected to start in 2024 and take two years to complete.

State legislators talk priorities at District 42 town hall

SHOREVIEW — It was a full house at the Shoreview Library last Tuesday evening for a town hall meeting with District 42 legislators.

Rep. Kelly Moller (DFL-Shoreview), Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn (DFL-Roseville) and Sen. Jason Isaacson (DFL-Shoreview) shared their priorities for the remainder of the legislative session, which reconvenes Feb. 11, and answered written questions from constituents about their stance on various issues.

From the rising cost of insulin to ranked-choice voting, topics discussed at the Jan. 28 town hall ran the gamut. The first question was on gerrymandering, which former State Representative Paul Gardner, who moderated the meeting, noted is a timely issue—district lines will be redrawn by the state Legislature in 2021 using data collected from this year’s census.

Moller, Becker-Finn and Isaacson all expressed interest in having a nonpartisan committee, rather than the state Legislature, be put in charge of determining district boundaries. Isaacson referenced a bill he authored last year that would establish a redistricting commission to adopt congressional

and legislative boundaries after each census. That bill, Senate File 2233, did not get a hearing in the Senate.

“I had bipartisan opposition on that issue, and that’s been very frustrating. I like to tell my party that we don’t get to be the good guys only when it’s convenient; we have to be the good guys even when it’s not,” Isaacson said. “Luckily, in Minnesota, we’ve had a good court system that’s helped us out, so I’m confident we’ll end up with something that’s not horrible, but I’d love to see it (redistricting) done by a group of citizens that are engaged.”

Voter ID was also among the early issues raised. Senate Republicans plan to renew their push to require identification at the polls, which members of the DFL have widely criticized. In 2012, a proposed constitutional amendment to require identification at the polls failed by a margin of 52% to 46%.

All three legislators present at last week’s town hall voiced their opposition to voter ID. “Voter ID is a ridiculous idea that’s based on a racist premise,

and I absolutely, positively will oppose that 100%,” Isaacson said. “When put forth, it serves as a way to put folks who are in a tough spot, or not as privileged as a spot, to bar them from voting.”

Both Moller and Becker-Finn echoed that sentiment. Becker-Finn called the Republican push a “waste of time,” as Gov. Tim Walz (DFL) has already said that he would not sign such a bill into law. “I’m very against (voter ID). It’s unnecessary, and it’s just meant to divide us, and I don’t think that’s where we should be focusing our energy,” Becker-Finn said.

Environmentalism repeatedly came up as a priority for the upcoming legislative session.

Moller said that environmental issues are “probably the number one thing I hear about.” She stressed the need for both local and state governments to take long-term environmental impacts into consideration when making decisions.

“We’re seeing the effects of climate change around the world, with flooding and fires. It’s too late; we have to start acting on this.” Moller said. “Really, (with) anything that’s impacted by the environment, we need to be taking climate into account. It’s not logical to make plans assuming things are going to be the way they’ve always been.”

Moller added that impacts on low-income communities and communities of color warrant their own consideration. “Those areas are most often hit by the effects of climate change first,” she said.

Another question about housing trends led to a lengthy discussion about the availability of affordable housing throughout the Twin Cities metro.

Becker-Finn named affordable housing as among her top priorities for the upcoming session.

“We absolutely need more affordable housing,” she said. “It’s hard, because we can only do so much at the state level. We real-

ly need folks to remain active in their own communities.”

Becker-Finn also said that she “has some hope” that legislation regarding affordable housing can move forward this year.

“The governor and lieutenant governor have made this really a top priority. There’s a lot of affordable housing dollars in their proposed bonding bill,” she said.

However, she also said that such progress is dependent on local support for affordable housing projects.

“One of the hardest issues in our regions (is) the Not-In-My-Backyard-Phenomenon ... You’ll talk about affordable housing, and people will say ‘That’s a great idea, yep.’

And then a proposal will come up, and the folks who live within a certain radius of that proposal don’t want it there, and then it doesn’t happen,” Becker-Finn said. “This is a great place to live. You guys all know that, but it’s really hard for some families to find a place to live.”

1920 Mrs. O. J. Stirk was elected chairman of the program committee of the Woman’s Club for the year 1920-21 at the annual election held Monday Jan. 19th at the home of Miss Hazel Spink.

1945 Lion’s Club Was Organized Tuesday Night, Frank Taylor President and The Rev. Frank Barr, Secretary; Meet Again Next Monday, 5th, at 8:00…The Lions are roaring and the lion tamer is busy. Such is the case since a number of young business men met in the City Hall Tuesday night and stirred up the animals. The object of this meeting was to organize a Lions service club and it went over with a bang, about 20 signing up.

1970 White Bear Lake was the center of activity for winter carnival enthusiasts Sunday as the community hosted the 24th annual contest, hot air balloon and ice boat races. Doug Albert took top honors in the angling derby by racing to the judges stand minutes before the contest ended with an 8 ½ pound northern.

WASHINGTON COUNTY BRIEFS Corbid named Washington County administrator

Noxious weed spreads to Washington County

Kevin Corbid was named the Washington County administrator by the county board Jan. 14. Corbid will succeed Molly O’Rourke, who announced her retirement effective Jan. 28. Corbid’s annual salary will be $188,700, a 4% increase over his current salary.

Corbid has worked for Washington County since 2001 and has served as deputy administrator with O’Rourke since 2012. Prior to the appointment, he served as the director of property records and taxpayer services for 10 years. As the deputy county administrator, Corbid led the development of the countywide budget, assisted in the planning, development and implementation of countywide policies and initiatives and worked closely with the Washington County Board of Commissioners. Corbid also oversaw the county departments of Property Records and Taxpayer Services, Information Technology, and Accounting and Finance.

Corbid has 25 years of state and local government experience. Prior to his tenure at the county, he served as a policy analyst and lobbyist for the Association of Minnesota Counties and worked for the Minnesota Senate on local government issues. Corbid received his undergraduate degree in political science from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

He has a Masters of Public Administration from Hamline University.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) confirmed five species of weeds on the state’s Noxious Weed Prohibited Eradicate List for the first time in eight counties in 2019. Weeds categorized as prohibited eradicate are the worst types of weeds. The law requires destruction of species on this list, including all above- and below-ground plant parts, because the weeds may be harmful to public health, the environment, public roads, crops, livestock or other property.

Black swallow-wort (Cyanchum louiseae) was found in Washington County.

Black swallow-wort is a viney milkweed that overtakes both sunny and shady habitats and is toxic to monarch butterflies. The MDA verifies the reports and, when possible, collects samples for the official University of Minnesota herbarium records.

As the regulatory agency for managing noxious weeds, the MDA also helps local governments with weed management and enforcement of the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law. The MDA provides training to County Agriculture Inspectors (CAIs) while the CAIs enforce the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law. Sheriff’s Office receives external defibrillator accessories The Washington County Sheriff’s Office will receive automatic external defibrillator pads and batteries after the county board accepted the gift Jan. 14.

Mark Altmann, of Marine on St. Croix, asked to donate 10 Cardiac Science Intellisense Powerheart G3 automatic external defibrillator (AED) batteries and 10 Cardiac Science AED defibrillation pads to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The AED pads are valued at $51 each and the AED batteries are valued at $398 each, making the total value of the donation $4,490.

County will continue to provide services for those facing domestic abuse Washington County will continue to work with Tubman, which provides services to victims and families with domestic abuse, after the county board approved an $188,505 contract with the agency Jan. 14. The contract will run through 2020.

Tubman provides shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, assistance with orders for protection and community presentations. Tubman is the community point of contact for the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) program.

This risk assessment tool is used by law enforcement officers in Washington County to help identify the most dangerous offenders in cases of intimate

partner violence and to connect victims with services. Information is used to aid the criminal justice system in allocating resources accordingly.

After a review, Tubman discovered that it is taking the agency longer to resolve no-contact orders, as the complexity of each case has increased. The 2020 contract represents a 4% increase from the 2019 contract to cover service cost increases and provide an adjustment for staff salaries in 2020.

County board will consider increase in transportation sales tax

Washington County commissioners approved a $1.459 million contract with Canvas Health Jan. 14 to provide county residents services in 2020. Canvas Health provides services to children, adolescents, adults, elderly individuals and families who struggle with aging, crises, chemical and mental health and domestic and sexual abuse.

Washington County has contracted with Canvas Health for many years to provide many state-mandated mental health services and other services to county residents; the majority of services fall under this contract. These services include adult and child psychiatry, crisis clinic psychiatry services, outpatient mental health services, psychological and parenting evaluation services, housing support, abuse and recovery services, case management for children diagnosed as seriously emotionally disturbed and family-based services. The 2020 contract represents a 10.39% decrease, or $169,302 less than the 2019 contract.

Washington County commissioners will conduct a public hearing at its regular board meeting at 9 a.m. Feb. 11 at the Government Center in Stillwater to consider an update to increase the sales and use tax to 0.5%. Generally referred to as the local option sales tax, state law allows counties to impose a sales and use tax up to 0.5% and a vehicle excise tax up to $20 per vehicle.

Of Minnesota’s 87 counties, 49 have implemented the tax. Currently, Washington County imposes the tax at a rate of 0.25% for the sales and use tax and a $20 vehicle excise tax. The county received $10.2 million under the current tax in 2018 and expects to collect $10.7 million in 2019. With the increase in the sales and use tax, it is estimated that the county would collect $16.1 million in 2020.

The county is restricted in its use of the revenue from the tax. Proceeds must be used for specific projects or improvements, which must be spelled out during a public hearing and the county board’s resolution. The additional tax revenue would be used for transportation projects in the county and would reduce the reliance on county general property taxes to pay for bonding. If the county board agrees to adopt the additional tax following the public hearing, it would be implemented July 1.

Swinging seniors enjoying winter softball indoors

John Bartholomew of White Bear Lake is one of 360 senior citizens who’ve found a sweet way to beat the winter blues.

Twice a week, they play league softball games indoors.

“We just feel blessed to be able to play at our ages,” said Bartholomew, 71, a retired computer programer. And to be able to play in the winter.

“Yes, it gives you something to do, November through March.”

The Roseville Senior Softball League started in 1988 with two teams. Currently there’s 25 teams and 360 active players in four leagues, operating in both winter at the Stillwater Dome and sum-

mers on fields in Roseville and Little Canada.

According to the league’s web site, rosevilleseniorsoftball.net, it’s the largest senior league in the country.

Bartholomew’s team, called Al Long (they go by the managers’ names), plays on Tuesdays and Fridays in late morning and early afternoon.

He estimated that the average age is about 70. The official cutoff is 60 but a few guys in their 50s play. The oldest is 92.

“We try not to get hurt, which seldom happens, because we take it easy.

We know our limits,” Bartholomew said. “We always have courtesy runners if needed.”

He’s had surgery for rotary cuff and hand injuries but feels as fi ne now as you can hope for at age 71. In fact, he always plays outfield in the senior league.

“Outfielders are hard to come by, because we are all still in one piece. and we can still run,” he explains. “The infield, that’s where the guys that are dinged up play.”

Bartholomew grew up in Maplewood and attended Hill High School in St. Paul (which is now Hill-Murray after a merger). He never played sports in high school.

“I was working too much,” he said.

But he has played rec softball all since age 21 — so, 50 years now — along

with hockey until age 66. He was president of a league in White Bear Lake’s Hippodrome for 10 years. He has six younger brothers, and five of them also still play softball, including four in

the same league.

“The emphasis is more on having fun than on records and winning,” he said. “For me the biggest thing is just the camaraderie with the guys.”

Ex-Bear is NFL’s guest at Super Bowl after national prep coaching honor Lambert Brown, former White Bear Lake athlete who coached Wayzata to the state football championship this fall, was a guest of the NFL at both the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl.

Brown was a nominee for the NFL’s Don Shula High School Coach of Year award, resulting in the trip to the Pro Bowl in Orlando.

At the Pro Bowl, the 2000 White Bear Lake graduate was named as runner-up for the national award, which brought him an invitation to the Super Bowl in Miami, played Sunday.

The NFL annually honors a high school coach displaying "the integrity, achievement, and leadership” exemplified Shula, the NFL’s all-time leader in wins with 328.

While at the Pro Bowl, Brown posted this on Facebook: "I'm really (humbled) to be down here with some

really great coaches. Thinking about all the great people in Minnesota and the Wayzata community that allowed me the opportunity to be down here.”

Brown played halfback in a record-setting option offense in 1998 and 1999 for the Bears, who qualified for state each year, said Travis Littlefield, who was his position coach. Don Jackson was head coach.

Brown’s promising junior season was cut short by a broken leg when being tackled from behind. The Bears went to state and lost to eventual champion Woodbury.

As a senior, Brown had “an excellent year both as running back and kickoff returner,” Littlefield said, and helped the Bears return to state where they lost a close game to Eden Prairie. He rushed for 989 yards, scored 116 points, and was selected as an alternate for the state all-star game.

Brown played briefly at Concordia St. Paul but injuries cut his career short, Littlefield said.

His coaching career started at Fridley, where he led the Tigers to a share of the North Suburban Confer-

ence title in 2009. He moved on to Chaska, where his 2013 team reached the state tournament, the school’s first trip in 39 years.

He left coaching to serve as activities director at Maple Grove, but in 2016 was tapped to join the Wayzata coaching staff as the designated successor to Paul Anderson in one of the state’s premier programs. Anderson, who coached three state champions, was one year from retirement.

“If you get the opportunity to get good people into your organization, you do it, and getting Lambert was a big coup for us,” Anderson told the Star-Tribune at the time.

Brown became head coach a year later, in 2017. He had to revive the program, which had slipped to 2-7 in Anderson’s last year.

The Trojans were 2-7 again in Brown’s first year, then 5-5 in 2018, and 13-0 in this fall, capped by 35-20 win over Champlin Park in the Prep Bowl.

Zamboni brought back to life in time for Miracle

Feb. 22 is the 40th anniversary of the 1980 hockey game at Lake Placid, forever dubbed Miracle on Ice. Coincidentally, Ramsey County’s first Zamboni — the same machine that manicured Aldrich Arena ice — is being restored and should be ready for a special parade commemorating the event.

The Minnesota Wild is organizing a Greatest Day Parade in St. Paul to honor “Miracle on Ice,” the day the men’s U.S. Olympic team, coached by Herb Brooks, beat the Soviets. The team went on to win the gold medal.

A Forest Lake grad who played high school hockey at Aldrich is helping in the $15,000 Zamboni restoration.

Corey Roberts, owner of The Minnesotan apparel company in downtown White Bear Lake, is selling specially designed shirts for the project and kicking back 12% of sales.

“One of our first designs was the Aldrich Arena shirt,” noted Roberts, who opened the store late 2018.

“It’s a landmark.” Sharing his own personal experience, the retailer said he’ll never forget losing to Hill-Murray 6-5 in double overtime his last high school game at the Maplewood arena, the oldest ice rink in Ramsey County.

Sara Ackmann, director of operations for ice arenas and golf courses, is familiar with the store and knew Roberts had Aldrich apparel. The county approached the owner asking if he’d be interested in helping fundraise for the Zamboni project. Roberts quickly accepted, creating the graphic and applying it to two garments, plus a hat.

The nostalgic Aldrich merchandise has been popular, but for reasons Roberts didn’t expect. “When we first started selling the shirt, I heard more comments about graduations at Aldrich than hockey. That caught me by surprise,” he said.

Ackmann said the 1962 Zamboni, decommissioned in the early ’90s, was becoming a storage problem for the county so staff considered its options. “Passionate employees thought we should do something with the

Zamboni,” she said. “Originally, we thought to make it a showpiece at Vadnais (Sports Center). After one of our mechanics got the engine running, the decision was made to get the resurfacer fully functional again. The project is basically employee-driven.”

If the restored machine passes a resurfacing test, it will be used at special Aldrich events and showcased during community celebrations like the St. Paul parade.

Zephyr boys Nordic place 3rd in conference The Mahtomedi boys Nordic Ski team placed third among seven teams in the Metro East Conference in the meet Monday, Jan. 27, at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington.

Leading the Zephyrs were sophomores Max Nelson, placing 14th, Luke Larson in 17th, and Mackinley Commander in 20th, each getting honorable mention to all-conference.

Mahtomedi Gymnastics Kate Ryan, Mahtomedi senior gymnast, is co-captain and one of the top performers on a strong team. “She’s a hard worker who consistently hits her routines,” coach Debbie Driscoll assessed. “She does not have a weak event.” Driscoll said Ryan’s signature moves are a yerchenko pike on vault, a “beautiful bail” and double back on bars, a one-and-a-half twist and front full twist on floor, and high-level leaps and skills on beam. She has made all-conference and qualified for state since joining the Zephyrs in 10th grade. Her top scores are 37.35 all-around, 9.375 vault, 9.35 bars, 9.65 beam and 9.575 floor.

The Mahtomedi Nordic Ski girls team repeated as champions of the Metro East Conference in the meet Monday at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington.

The Zephyrs, coached by Dave Bridges, had five of the top nine finishers as they edged Hastings by one point, 473 to 472, for the top spot.

Makayla Fischer led the Zephyr girls, placing second with a combined time of 32:00 for the skate and classic races.

The champion was Linneah Urban of Hastings in 30:26.

Zephyr sophomore Liz Hansen placed sixth, freshman Sarah Brings seventh, junior Lauren Whiterabbit eighth, and sophomore Maya Tarnowski ninth, all earning all-conference recognition.

The medallion was wrapped in a Target bag under a drainage pipe by the throwing fields near the school. Roughly 100 Matoska International first grade students had a great time visiting the White Bear Center for the Arts. They viewed a gallery show by Mary Ann and Gary Carlson, who created sculptures using antiques, old musical instruments and repurposed items.

I'll save the puns for seeing the sun this week but after 11 days of clouds, how nice was it to wake to sunshine Saturday morning? Although a few clouds moved in during the afternoon, the milder temperatures were a nice addition. Sunday followed up with sun dominating the day as temperatures soared to 47º. People were out in droves.

I got my first shorts and t-shirt run of the season in. Typically January is our 3rd cloudiest month, behind November and December. We're off to a great start so far this February. I'm at 34 inches of snow for the season. January finished about 5º warmer than normal.
