Ready for a solo sliding experience After making a couple of trips down the hill together, Cory Johnson sends his daughter Elin on a solo trip down a snow-covered sliding hill at Tamarack Nature Center Saturday, Feb. 16 in White Bear Township. It was their first visit to the sliding hill at the nature center, which was covered with an ample layer of snow following a week of precipitation. Find more snow activity photos on page 1B.
The night watch: Keeping impaired drivers off the streets BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
He patrols the streets of White Bear Lake looking for drivers weaving over the line or forgetting to stop at a stop sign — early in the morning Feb. 9 he found one that blew a 0.09. White Bear Lake Police Officer Antonio Brown, a dedicated DWI enforcer, started his 11 1/2-hour shift the evening prior. He doesn't respond to 911 calls with the rest of the overnight shift. He spends his time on the lookout for impaired drivers
to protect area residents from tragic accidents. It was minus 9 degrees just after 8 p.m. Feb. 8 when he pulled over a driver weaving over the line near County Road E and Highway 61. It was a distracted driver who admitted she had been on her phone. He gave her a warning. “I rarely give tickets,” he said. “Next time, I would give a ticket.” Brown said he usually gives people a warning for bad driving behavior SEE ON PATROL, PAGE 8A

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Survey results are in for the downtown bus rapid transit station. The people's choice? Option A. The frontrunner has a platform at Seventh Street and Washington Avenue behind Beartown Bar & Grill. There is no parking there; the station would serve walk-up traffic. Northbound and southbound passengers would use the same 80foot platform. Also notable: This station is farthest from the core of downtown. Ramsey County Transportation Planner Andy Gitzlaff presented results of the survey to City Council Feb. 12. Included were six options proposed by a project team at a Jan. 10 open house at City Hall. Those attending were asked to choose their top two preferred sites. Residents could also list their preferences online until Jan. 31. Of the 365 people who took the online survey and the 75 who voted at the open house, 80 percent picked one of the six options. Twenty percent picked "other" or no station. About half the respondents lived downtown; 50 did not live in White Bear Lake but were visitors to the city. According to Gitzlaff, 115 people chose A as a first or second choice; 94 chose B (Fourth Street and Division); 62 chose C (Fourth Street and Hwy. 61, next to Railroad Park); 106 chose D (Clark and Second); 104 chose E (Banning and Hwy. 61); and 35 chose F (combination of A and C). Twenty-six people were opposed to the whole project. The survey also asked respondents to identify top elements to consider for the station location. No. 1 was compatibility to the downtown character and No. 2 was access to activity and employment. The downtown station is the last of 21 stops planned along the Rush Line Corridor, which will stretch 14 miles from Union Depot in St. Paul to White Bear Lake. The city will have stations at Buerkle Road, Cedar Avenue, Whitaker Street/White Bear Avenue area, and downtown. The downtown station will serve as the corridor turn-around. City Council will be asked to choose a preferred location at its Feb. 26 meetSEE STATION, PAGE 8A
