Water Gremlin’s neighbors hear more about chemical exposure BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

WHITE BEAR LAKE — On behalf of its 300 employees, a Water Gremlin spokesman said his company was “profoundly sorry” for releasing a pollutant into the air that impacted about 5,000 people. “All these years, until 2018, the company believed we were operating in compliance with our permit,” noted Carl Dubois, vice president of international marketing. Dubois made that statement before a hostile crowd Feb. 21 at the North Campus theater. Residents downwind of the Water Gremlin plant were attending a meeting called by the Minnesota Pol-

lution Control Agency (MPCA) and the Department of Health (MDH). Spokespeople for both agencies discussed the ongoing investigation of trichloroethylene (TCE) leaked from the plant at levels above legal limits and ensuing health risks. TCE is a solvent used to degrease battery terminals in Water Gremlin’s manufacturing process. It is also found in products like spot cleaners, paint and paint removers, wood finishes and adhesives. TCE is odorless unless in high concentrations and is in a class of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds. The battery terminal operation shut SEE WATER GREMLIN, PAGE 8A

The area of concern for TCE emissions is 1 to 1.5 miles from Water Gremlin’s facility at 4400 Otter Lake Road.

Call it an epiphany if you want, but whatever it was, the co-owner of the vessel known as the Queen Mary hit upon an idea after stopping at a Wisconsin gas station. As the story goes, the boat’s new owners, Jason Brown and Pete Sampair, were driving the 80-year-old wooden cruiser back to its original home on White Bear Lake from its former home near Green Bay. They stopped for gas. A van carrying Mennonite men also stopped for gas. The men walked over to stare at the Queen. “They were in awe of this boat,” recalled Brown. “They were giving each other a thumbs up and ogling the thing.” That gave him an idea. Brown and wife Angie have a 30-yearold Amish-built table that they still use every day. The Amish are known for their old-world craftsmanship, especially with wood, so Brown wondered if he could find someone with the skills needed to restore the old boat. “We got back on the road and all of a sudden I said, ‘Pete, we should ask the Amish to refinish the boat.’ We both SEE QUEEN MARY, PAGE 9A
