County road construction projects announced

Several street construction projects are planned in northern Ramsey County this year.

The largest will be reconstruction of the Rice Street bridge at I-694. The I-694 eastbound exit ramp to Rice Street and the ramp to I-694 westbound were expected to close March 18, according to the county. It is expected to be closed for five months. Detours will be posted.

The construction, which includes interchanges with roundabouts, is expected to be completed by November 2020. It will affect Shoreview and Vadnais Heights from North Owasso Boulevard to Vadnais Boulevard.

100s of children in foster care waiting for families

There are 800 children and youth in Minnesota waiting to be adopted.

Minnesota’s Waiting Children, many of them teenagers, are currently in foster care, MN Adopt Foster Care Specialist Kim Young told those who attended a panel event on adoption through foster care March 11. The presentation, entitled “Debunking the Myths,” was held at Ramsey County Library – Shoreview.

MN Adopt is an organization that provides resources to families considering adopting from foster care and after-adoption care, said Kim Sacay, recruitment coordinator. On its website is a list of some of the

youth who are looking for families and can be adopted through various agencies.

There are several myths that circulate about adopting from foster care, Young said. First, it is not expensive, as some people believe. Traditional infant adoption or international adoption can be expensive, but there are minimal fees involved in adopting from foster care. Many children adopted from foster care are also given a stipend from the state for medical and mental health services.

Another myth about foster adoption is that you have to be a certain type of family. Single parents and same-sex couples can adopt children from Minnesota's foster care system. There is also no age requirement beyond being age 21 or older.

People also often wrongly believe that all that children need is a loving home and they will be fine, Young said. Families adopting from foster care need to be willing to learn new parenting skills and make a lifetime commitment. Many children in foster care have special needs because they have gone through traumatic experiences.

It is also a myth that children adopted from foster care instantly feel thankful for being adopted. “It is really important to remember that they had to be removed from their biological family,” Young explained.

Familiar face wearing police uniform White Bear Lake's Police Department has a new officer. He's a familiar face in White Bear Lake, said Chief Julie Swanson, who introduced Joe Kill to City Council March 12 before his swearing in.

“Joining the department is a lifelong dream for Joe,” she noted. Born and raised in White Bear Lake, Kill had his first ride-along at age 8, sitting on phone books in the squad car to see over the dashboard. Although the department no longer does that, it sparked a young boy's interest in becoming a police officer.

Kill was a police reservist when Swanson joined the department 20 years ago. He holds a degree in law enforcement and served as a member of the Army's military police in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After completing his service, he returned to White Bear Lake and rejoined the police reserves.

Kill also ran a landscape business and worked in sales for a garage door company before becoming a cop. A little known fact about Kill, Swanson said: He lived above Johnson Boat Works for a portion of his childhood with his mom. Family members, including his wife and two daughters, were in attendance when the new officer took the oath of office.

New route being considered for driverless bus

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Seniors on the south side who no longer drive will still be able to hit the gym or pool if a new service reaches maturation.

City Council has blessed a driverless bus pilot project that will run along Orchard Lane between the YMCA and The Boulders Senior Living Apartments on Willow Avenue. The route replaces one considered earlier that would have transported seniors to Aldi’s in Mahtomedi.

The City Council gave the project the OK after hearing a short presentation by University of Minnesota transportation policy researcher Frank Douma. He’s been researching the technology since 2012, promoting driverless vehicles to improve safety on our roads and bring mobility to people who can’t drive.

Autonomous vehicles don’t have a steering wheel and run on electricity. The bus used in White Bear’s pilot program will carry 12 to 15 passengers along a route of several miles in length. Unlike driverless vehicles being tested in other cities, the bus will have an attendant to provide manual operation and apply an emergency brake, if necessary.

Similar driverless vehicles are being demonstrated in Las Vegas; Arlington, Texas; the University of Michigan and Grand Rapids, Michigan, according to Douma. White Bear Lake got involved when his team sent letters looking for test sites in smaller cities and White Bear Area

Chamber of Commerce Director Tom Snell responded with “enthusiastic” interest.

Douma explained the program to council March 12, noting the Orchard Lane route met criteria for minimum left turns, distance and destinations of interest, like the YMCA. “There are opportunities to bring mobility and access to people who can’t drive,” Douma explained. “We are not seeing real movement by the private sector in smaller cities or rural areas to use autonomous vehicles. It became obvious to us that people in these areas could benefit just as much.”

City Manager Ellen Hiniker noted that the YMCA has not been brought into the conversation at this point. The city first wanted to broach the topic with council, who agreed it was worth pursuing.

The project is in the early stages. The school district is also taking an interest because of possible career pathways for students.

There is no financial risk to the city, Hiniker noted. Grant money is available from the state, and the chamber is talking about doing its own fundraising. Duration of the pilot project has not been worked out yet, nor have involved parties like the YMCA, Orchard Lane residents or The Boulders been brought into the conversation. Engaging those along the route are next steps.

Other logistics such as ownership of the vehicle and liability insurance are being discussed, as well. Hiniker added that the League of Minnesota Cities is interested in how cities coordinate such projects as the technology evolves.

WHITE BEAR LAKE CITY COUNCIL NOTES WHITE BEAR LAKE — The City Council approved the following at its March 12 meeting: • A request by Walser Polar Chevrolet to demolish and rebuild the dealership at the property located at 1801 County Road F. Originally built in 1964, the new building will be smaller and the display area larger. Owners requested two conditional use permits and several variances, which will place the building closer to Goose Lake and townhomes to the east. The iconic white bear will be relocated on the northwestern part of the 6-acre lot.

• Purchase agreement for property on Hoffman Road between Public Works and Saputo Inc. The property will be used for outside and cold storage now located at the former Public Works site at 1890 Whitaker St. All four parcels are owned by the same party and total about 3 acres. Staff discussed potential purchase of the properties with council in a closed meeting last July after being approached by a representative of Saputo, who indicated the company was interested in a portion of the property. The city is splitting the land 50-50 with Saputo.

Purchase price is $799,000 for the property. Once acquired, it will be re-platted, rezoned and cleared of all existing buildings. The north half will then be sold to Saputo.

Staff noted in a memo to council that there are no current proposals for the former Public Works site but its proximity to the Marina Triangle District, Highway 61, the future Bruce Vento Trail and Rush Line makes the site well positioned for redevelopment.

• 2019 street reconstruction project at a cost of $3.4 million. A third of the cost will be assessed to benefitting property owners. Streets north of downtown are part of the reconstruction.

There will be some tree loss, noted City Engineer Paul Kauppi, and it will impact some yards and driveways.

The project will be similar to last year. He assured residents at a public hearing that staff will "walk them through the process regarding impacts."

Councilman Dan Jones asked that the trail along White Bear Avenue wait for further improvements, but his request was not part of the approved resolution. "There is zero buffer between the trail and the road and I question overall usage," he said. "Goose Lake is a trail to nowhere."

White Bear Fire Department, abruptly left his seat and rushed to the lobby for a medical emergency.

The mayor was heard saying he had the AED out and called a recess. A four-fifths vote was required for the street project and Councilman Doug Biehn was absent, so they had to wait for Engstran's return. About 20 minutes later, the councilman took his seat. Remaining business on the agenda was quickly resolved due to the emergency.

• Renewed annual business licenses. Under miscellaneous notes, the VFW Keep Zimmer Post has decided not to renew its tobacco license.

Also noted, tobacco compliance checks were conducted at 24 licensed establishments in spring and fall of 2018 by the White Bear Lake Police Department. Two had one failure: SuperAmerica on County Road E and Birch Lake Liquor on Hwy. 96. Both the establishment and the sales clerk were ticketed.

Good grief

W

inter has always been my least favorite season. I moved to Minnesota nearly a decade ago but have yet to adapt to the bitterly cold months that comprise so much of our year, and February, in my humble opinion, is the worst of all. By the time it arrives, the novelty of the new year has faded, and so has my resolve to embrace winter. Without fail, I spend each February yearning for warmer, brighter days.

This year, my beloved grandmother died on Feb. 19, Between making an already cold and gloomy month feel all the the Lines more so.

Her death is the first I’ve Elizabeth Callen experienced as an adult, and perhaps because I hadn’t really undergone the loss of a loved one before, I likewise hadn’t paid the act of grieving much mind. In the weeks since, I’ve found myself a student, albeit an unwilling one, in what it means to grieve.

When we received word that the cancer we thought was in my grandmother’s past had not only returned but was now terminal, my family gathered in Michigan to be with her and with one another. I will forever remember those days as both heavy and light, full of bizarrely beautiful paradoxes.

I grimaced seeing my strong, spirited grandmother confined to her bed, looking weak and pale, but I also smiled through our conversations about faith and our family and my newly-adopted cat. I wept thinking about a new chapter in life without her, but I also laughed through my time with faraway relatives, grateful for the opportunity to be together.

Two weeks later, I returned to Michigan for my grandma’s funeral. It was, and is, hard to come to terms with the fact that she is gone, and not merely a few states and a timezone away like she was for so much of my life. But the hardest days were softened by the people I spent them with: immediate and extended family members, and my grandma’s seemingly endless circle of friends.

We felt her loss acutely that weekend, but we also felt the love she poured into the world and each of our lives. In the midst of mourning my grandmother’s death, celebrating her life brought us a profound sense of peace. I was f loored by the joy that came to me, joy that may not have saved my aching heart but did, at least, keep it af loat.

I have long admired how intentionally my grandma met life. She cared deeply for others, fervently believed in a more just and peaceful world, and worked tirelessly to bring that world closer to our own. I have since come to admire how intentionally she met death, too—with openness, acceptance and an abiding faith that it was not truly the end.

I know that throughout my life, more grief will come my way, and my own death will eventually befall me, too. I am, paradoxically, frightened of the unknown and hopeful that something better lies ahead. I am eager to find out what.

In the meantime, I want to strive to live a life that looks a bit more like my grandma’s and try to embrace the lessons that seasons of grief, and perhaps even winter, can teach me.

Bills in response to chemical exposure

s many of you are aware, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently announced that the Water Gremlin plant in White Bear Township had been emitting high levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) for over a decade. Exposure to this toxic chemical can increase the risk of cancer and other serious health effects and impact Legislator fetal development during pregnancy.

No judgement: Come to abundance

I

n 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich embarked on a journalistic endeavor to investigate the impact of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act on the “working poor.” Her adventure took her from Florida to Minnesota, from scrubbing floors to waiting tables, from trailer parks to residential motels, to quickly discover that no job is truly “unskilled.”

“I grew up hearing over and over, to the point of tedium, that ‘hard work’ was the secret of success: ‘Work hard and you’ll get ahead’ or ‘it’s hard work that got us where we are.’” Ehrenreich writes in her book “Nickel and Dimed”: “No one ever said that you could work hard- harder than you ever thought possible – and still find yourself sinking ever deeper into poverty and debt.”

Earlier this year, a book with a similar premise hit the bestseller list. In “Maid”, author Stephanie Land chronicles her experiences working in the Pacific Northwest. Providing a glimpse of the “secret underbelly of upper middle class America, and what it’s like to be in service to them,” Land details her personal struggles from a middle class upbringing, to an unplanned pregnancy, to living in a homeless shelter and her fight to provide the very best life for her daughter and herself.

Maid, like Nickel and Dimed before it, challenges our most basic assumptions on who experiences poverty and why. About halfway through the book, my eyes teared up as I was reminded about the important work we do at the White Bear Food Shelf.

After describing her experience missing meals, Land writes, “Though I knew it was available, I never went to a food [shelf] or soup kitchen. Our choices were limited but we weren’t starving, so I could never bring myself to go. There always seemed to be plenty of people who needed it more.”

The vision of the White Bear Area Movers & Emergency Food Shelf is “to end food insecurity in our community.” Food Shakers insecurity is defined as, “the state of being without reliable access to Andréa a sufficient quantity of affordable, Kish-Bailey nutritious food.”

Over the past four years, the Food Shelf has doubled our programming and our resources. To the “long time proponent” of the idea for one way’s around White Bear Lake and Bald Eagle Lake, should be a done deal. I’m going to respectfully disagree as someone in the proposed one-way zone.

I have lived on Bald Eagle Lake for 35 years, and walked the streets on and around the lake with many labradors and goldens for all those years. The walk on the lake side of the street is seasonal. The wind out of the north and the ensuing blowing snow makes for a really miserable walk in the winter. On good days its much nicer to walk on the lake, not on the road. I have met many dog walkers on the streets a block in from the lake, and sheltered from the wind and snow during the winter. Lots of people shift to the open space areas, the Benson Farm prairie space, rail road tracks and parks during the colder part of the year. Those are actually better walks, there are flowers, wild life, birds and seasonal smells. The

cold north wind in the spring and fall thin folks out, so now we are talking about a small window of time —summer. I’ve been fortunate to be able to work from home and see the lake from my office window. There can be days where the weather keeps people, bikes and joggers off the lake for long stretches of time. There is no constant steady stream of people and bikes on the street during any part of the year. Certainly not enough to deny tax paying residents access to their homes as is enjoyed by others off the lake.

When White Bear Lake made Lake Street a one way, it was a lot easier as the area was set up on a grid, so getting to and from their homes wasn’t a big deal. Bald Eagle on the south end is not set up on a grid, so now you have to increase traffic on small side streets that haven’t had to deal with it previously.

Shift the problem to somebody else? The same issues will happen on South Shore Blvd and but for a small stretch, there is a limited view of the lake.

The traffic issue is really a problem during morning and evening. For some reason we have to take a heavy handed approach to this issue by having a one

way for the very few that want unfettered access. If you want to lower the speed limit to 25, I can live with it as I bet can others wanting access to their home as. If you want to try some kind of paving treatment to make the road unattractive to trucks, school buses and garbage trucks to lessen traffic, I’m willing to give it a try. If we want to limit traffic on weekends, I’ll try that too. But to take away people’s right to access their home, because they live on the lake, not willing to go along. Way too many walking, recreational options in the area to consider this.

Bad choice for bus stop I agree with the decision not to locate the Rush Line (BRT) terminal in downtown White Bear Lake proper. The current proposed location adjacent to the Bear Town Bar and Grill is just as bad, if not a worse choice for the location of the bus terminal.

I challenge those making the decision to locate the terminal adjacent to the Bear

Town Bar and Grill to drive north on highway 61 between 7:45 and 8:15 during any school day morning. Make a left turn on Seventh or Eighth Street and experience the every day congestion of parents and school buses delivering students to the middle school.

Now to this dangerous daily congestion they are planning on adding MTC buses to the mix. Both regular straight buses and articulated buses.

To add to the congestion, state and federal law mandates buses carrying passengers must stop 15 feet prior to crossing railroad tracks. Tracks which these buses will have to cross every time they enter and leave the terminal.

Bad location, bad decision.

Age 64, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 Larry was born on Feb. 12, 1955 in Longview, Washington, to Leonard and Cecilia (Halbur) Muellerleile. He was married to Sharon Kidder on September 6, 1975, in Fridley, Minnesota. After attending the University of Minnesota, Larry co-owned an automotive repair business and started White Bear Tire & Auto in 1989. He was known for his loyalty and generosity to both employees and customers, many of whom became dear friends. A thrill-seeker, avid skier and sportsman, Larry traveled the world and lived life to the absolute fullest.

Above all, he adored his family. He was a devoted husband, the best of fathers, and an incredible grandfather, the loss of which is inexpressible. Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 43 years; his son, Luke, and daughter, Suzette (Dan); and two granddaughters, Eve and Esther.

Visitation was held at Bradshaw Funeral and Celebration of Life Center in Stillwater on March 18. Funeral was Tuesday, March 19 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi. In lieu of flowers, memorials sent to the family will be directed to causes Larry loved.

County’s 1st black judge helps judicial bench reflect community

STILLWATER — The walls of the Washington County Courthouse judicial chambers are lined with portraits of former judges, most of them white and male.

There are no black judges pictured, but once Judge Juanita Freeman’s photograph is added to the collection, there will be.

Former Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Freeman Jaunita Freeman as a 10th District Court judge after Susan Miles announced her retirement last fall. Freeman previously worked as a senior assistant Hennepin County attorney in the adult prosecution and child protection divisions. She said she was surprised to learn that she made history by accepting the appointment, thereby becoming the fi rst black judge to serve in Washington County.

“Before me, I don’t think that there had been a judge of color in Washington County, period, and yes, it is 2019,” she said. “When I found out that I would be the fi rst nonwhite judge—and in particular, the fi rst African-American—I was like, ‘wow.’ It’s unbelievable.”

Freeman lives in Oakdale with her husband and their three daughters—ages 6, 4 and 1.

Originally from Rock Island, Illinois, she moved to Minnesota in fi fth grade when her mother accepted a job at the University of St. Thomas.

Freeman graduated from St. Paul’s Central High School and went on to study sociology and criminology at Hamline University, where she also played on the women’s basketball team.

After graduating, Freeman then spent a busy

three years at Mitchell Hamline School of Law clerking for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office drug and poverty teams and volunteering in the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center on top of studying for her J.D. Freeman’s interest in the legal field began early, she said. “I come from a very large blended family of nine step and foster siblings. Because I was the second to youngest of all those kids, I did a lot of listening and observing.”

Throughout such listening, Freeman observed “an inherent distrust in the system. I didn’t understand really why at a young age, but I knew that I wanted to be a part of understanding it and trying to break down that barrier. That was always the motivating force for me behind my legal career.”

Though some around Freeman expected her passion for social justice and advocacy to lead her to a career as a defense attorney, after law school she became a prosecutor instead.

“I think disconnect starts from all different levels of the process, including that initial interaction with law enforcement,” she explained.

“If you can have a prosecutor who has an understanding of life experience and circumstances reviewing the cases, that will bring a different perspective. I think I brought that.”

Freeman’s desire to break down structural barriers led her to apply for the seat on the 10th District Court last fall.

“What better person to break down a barrier than the judge? Everybody looks to the judge in the legal process,” she said. “You need judges who are not just knowledgeable of the law but are going to treat everybody with dignity and respect, and make sound decisions based on what they heard.”

Freeman was sworn into office Nov. 13.

“It’s been great. Everybody is so welcoming and fantastic,” she said of her fi rst few months on the job. “It’s been a nice adjustment learning the cul-

ture of Washington County and being embraced with the amount of warmth that I have been.”

With three judges set to retire in the next year, the Washington County judicial bench will soon look significantly different than it does currently.

“That’s a big turnaround for a 10-judge county,” Freeman said. “(Those judges) have been here for years, ensuring that justice has been done, so my immediate goals are to maintain that. … I think the immediate things are making sure that we do everything that needs to be done to make sure that the citizens we serve are still going to receive equal treatment and justice when they come to the Courthouse.”

Freeman called the opportunity to make history as the county’s fi rst black judge “amazing and humbling.”

“I can’t think of a time in my life where I thought I’d be breaking a literal barrier,” she said. “I wanted the barriers of distrust overtime to be broken down, but to literally kind of break that color line was—and still every day is—impactful to me.”

She also said that she is honored to help make Washington County’s judicial bench more representative of its ever-changing communities.

“I’ve been out here now for almost 10 years. As I’ve been here, I’ve seen the diversity increasing within Washington County,” she said. “I think it’s nice that the bench starts to reflect the populations that we serve, so that the people who are coming before the courts see reflections of themselves within the community and the bench.”

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

Vadnais Heights • A 26-year-old local man was found dead the evening of March 2 in the 400 block of Vadnais Road from an “apparent” self-inflicted gunshot wound. There was no sign of foul play. An investigation continues.

• A Walmart employee was arrested March 3 at work. The 21-year-old St. Paul woman was charged with theft.

• A deputy got behind two vehicles driving 97 mph in a 60 mph zone March 6 on I-694 at Rice Street.

The vehicles, neither of which had a license plate, then separated at I-35E. The deputy followed a silver

SUV, employing lights and a siren until the driver fi nally pulled over, ending the 8-mile chase. A 32-yearold Coon Rapids man was arrested on warrants and felony charges of fleeing police and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked into jail.

• Groceries were stolen March 9 at Walmart. A getaway vehicle was identified but the registered owner refused to answer the door at her listed address.

White Bear Township

• Deputies stopped a vehicle owned and driven by a Minneapolis man the night of March 8 in the 3400 block of Rice Street regarding a felony level warrant issued for his arrest for possession of marijuana with intent to sell. The 23-year-old was booked into jail.

• An odd attempt was made to open a checking account at a Twin City Federal Bank March 7 on Meadowlands Drive by using a stolen check. That didn’t work, and the 35-year-old South St. Paul woman’s application was turned over to the county attorney’s office for charges.

• A 42-year-old Maplewood woman was arrested March 8 at the point of a stun gun on outstanding warrants and a new no-contact order violation.

• A juvenile male was arrested the morning March 8 at the Bellaire Education Center in the 2500 block of County Road F and charged

with assault, disorderly conduct and obstruction of the legal process.

• A small black-and-brown dog was left the night of March 8 at the Otter Lake Dog Park. The little dog was still there the next morning with icicles on its fur. An investigation continues.

• A burglary of a house in the 5800 block of Hobe Lane occurred overnight March 9. Numerous items, along with a vehicle, were reported missing. An investigation is underway.

• An unsuccessful attempt was made to force open a door in the 5800 block of Hobe Court West, also on March 9. A resident spotted the suspect walking away.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • A vehicle window was smashed and items stolen from inside in the 2100 block of Orchard Lane March 8. Loss and damage amounted to about $1,900.

• A resident reported their Target account was hacked and about $130 in fraudulent purchases were made online.

• A guest in the 4900 block of Highway 61 discovered his rental Mercedes SUV had its catalytic converter stolen overnight while parked on the far east edge of the lot. It was worth about $900.

• A person shoplifted multiple items in the 4800 block of Highway 61 March 9. They fled north in a black SUV with no license plates.

• A package theft was reported in the 4700 block of Campbell Avenue March 9. A suspect has been identified.

• A customer causing a disturbance March 9 was later trespassed from the store in the 2600 block of County Road E.

• On March 10, officers responded to the 4000 block of White Bear Avenue in response to what was originally reported a 911 hang-up call in which two people were heard yelling. An investigation revealed a domestic assault took place and a 38-year-old White Bear Lake man was arrested.

• A business in the 1600 block of County Road E reported March 13 it had been forcibly entered in the previous three days and a computer had been stolen.

• A 52-year-old driver was arrested for DWI near Highway 61 and Cedar Avenue March 10. The driver’s blood alcohol level was 0.14.

• Theft of credit cards and a loss of $26 was reported in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road March 13.

• Theft of cash was reported in the 1800 block of Cedar Avenue March 10.

• A habitual shoplifter was sighted in the 1300 block of Century Avenue March 13.

• Theft of a license plate was reported in the 2200 block of Eleventh Street March 11.

• Community service officers responded to the intersection of Highland Avenue and County Road F on a report of a large pothole March 13. It was marked with a construction sign to promote visibility.

• Officers responded to the 2000 block of Fourth Street March 11 on a report of an assault that occurred between roommates. Upon investigation, a 34-year-old White Bear Lake man was arrested for second-degree assault.

Birchwood • A 79-year-old resident in the 700 block of Birchwood Avenue on Feb. 27 was cited for plowing his snow across the street onto the property of another resident. Grant • A Hugo woman, 42, was cited Feb. 25 by northbound Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies on patrol for speeding 68 mph in a 55 mph zone on southbound Manning Avenue at 80th Street.

• A suspicious gray truck was reported for turning around in the driveway of an equally suspicious

house fi re in the 9000 block of Ideal Avenue Feb. 26. Deputies were unable to locate the vehicle.

usually due to abuse or neglect. It takes time to trust new parents.

Most children are not adopted as infants from foster care, she added. While there are all ages of children adopted from foster care, about 40 percent of children waiting to be adopted are teenagers.

Tweens, teens need parents for life Erin Ward, of Maplewood, said she adopted four older children from foster care because she knew that children who age out of the foster care system often struggle.

When you are 19 and your car breaks down, you need someone to call, she said. A large percentage of the homeless population was in foster care at some point. Adopting foster children was a tangible way to do something to help the world, she explained.

In 2014, the Wards adopted an 11-year-old from foster care, who is now 17. In 2016, the Wards adopted a sibling group of three. The matching process can take several months. They looked at profiles of several children and interviewed therapists, teachers and foster parents but didn't meet the children before deciding.

Prospective adoptive parents who back out can be a huge letdown to children.

“My husband and I describe it as an arranged marriage, but there is no divorce,” Erin said. “It is forever and ever, amen.”

When the Wards first looked into adopting, they planned to find the youngest child possible, so they could grow together. Instead, they learned that might not be the best scenario when adopting from foster care. Their youngest child has had the most difficulty adjusting because they were not old enough to put leaving their birth family, foster care and adoption in context.

Barb Clark, of North Minneapolis, who works for the North American Council on Adoptable Children, said it is a myth that children adopted as infants won't have issues as they get older. Infants exposed in utero to a highly stressed birth mother, drugs or alcohol can manifest side effects later in life.

“A lot of times I'll see people who adopt younger children or infants and said they do not need support — eight to 10 years later they call us, stressed out,” she said. “Adoption means there is trauma and loss.”

But adopting from foster care can be less risky and scary than a traditional infant or international adoption, she added. Children from foster care can qualify for medical assistance and other services. When you adopt internationally or traditionally, if a child develops a significant disability or issue, you have to pay for services.

“With the families I work with, the ones that adopt through foster care feel less stressed than other types of adoptions,” she noted.

Clark has four teenagers she adopted from foster care. She said that although there have been times

she thought she might break, she has learned so much about the world she wouldn't trade it for anything.

The most important thing is to not attempt to go it alone but seek out support and resources, she noted.

How to help: Adoption, foster care, respite care There are currently about 10,000 children in Minnesota's foster care system.

Each county has its own child protection services and foster care program. Talia Jordan is one of the supervisors for Ramsey County.

The county always first tries to reunify children with their birth parents, Jordan said. It is usually a year to 18 months before a child would be placed on a track toward permanent foster care and adoption, she explained. Even then, parents are given multiple opportunities to prove they can care for their children before parental rights are terminated.

“Plan B is (long-term) foster care or an adoptive home,” Jordan said.

When children are available for adoption, counties and agencies first look for family or kin to adopt. If no one who knows the child is able to adopt, then they are made available to other prospective parents to adopt through the county or an agency.

Jasmine Grika, who is an Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) recruiter, ensures that American Indian children in foster care are placed in culturally relevant homes for adoption. A child is first attempted to be placed within the family, then their tribe, and then a Native home, before a non-Native home is considered.

If you can look at their profiles, descriptions and interests and see them for who they are while at the same time realizing they have another history on the private side, you might be a future adoptive parent.

“If you can see and hold all of that and get support and help and meet your kiddo where they are at, that is just a good quality to start this process,” Van Brent said.

RECAP - White Bear Township held its Annual Town Meeting on March 12th. The Annual Town Meeting is true grassroots government where residents in attendance vote to approve a resident to moderate the meeting, the previous year’s meeting minutes, meeting agenda, & property tax levy. This year’s meeting was moderated by Bob Kermes & had approximately 24 residents in attendance. County Board Member Blake Huffman & County Attorney John Choi provided residents with updates on County activities that have or will affect the Township. Ramsey County Undersheriff Jeff Ramacher provided an update on sheriff department activities. Residents also heard presentations from Jerry Hromatka, Northeast Youth and Family Services, Laura Chamberlain of HKGI on the Town’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan, & Larry Poppler of TKDA on the Town’s Pavement Management Program. Finally, residents received an update on the Town’s finances from the Town Finance Officer, Tom Kelly & then approved a 2020 preliminary property tax levy of $4,300,621.

COYOTES – AN URBAN REALITY - There have been coyote sightings throughout Ramsey County, with increased reports during the January & February mating season. While typically harmless to humans, coyotes are wild animals – employ caution in the case of a possible encounter. Contrary to popular belief, coyotes are not nocturnal & will be active anytime—day or night. Coyotes mate in late winter & whelp (birthing) in April or early May. This may lead to increased activity & sightings as they hunt to feed their pups.

The coyote is Minnesota’s most abundant large wild predator, intermediate in size between red foxes & wolves. In Minnesota, coyotes average 30 lbs., & stand about 18” high at the shoulders. They are gray/brown in color, & somewhat resemble a small German Shepherd dog in appearance. Coyotes in Minnesota are loners, except when families are raising pups. Their primary foods are rabbits & mice, but they are very opportunistic, & will feed on other small mammals, deer, birds, carrion, & even melons.

Children of all ages should be taught to stay away from any wild animal.

Things to remember: • Never feed a coyote • Never run from a coyote • Never leave small children or pets alone in a coyote habitat • Keep your yard free of fallen fruit, vegetables and pet food • Clean up brush piles before rodents move in • Vaccinate all pets for rabies, distemper, parvo, and other diseases, as recommended by a veterinarian • If you encounter a coyote that does not immediately run from people, harass it by: Shaking a noise maker, such as a soda can with pennies Make yourself larger by standing and waving your arms Shout in a deep aggressive voice Throw rocks or sticks at the coyote • If you see a coyote behaving in an abnormal manner call 9-1-1 These simple suggestions should prevent most coyote problems. However, if depredation occurs or aggressive coyote behavior is observed, removal of the problem coyote may be necessary.

Josh Helm, district partner for JDog Junk Removal & Hauling Twin Cities, recently traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida, to create a little bit of light for a family in a big cloud of darkness.

Helm, a resident of Vadnais Heights and a 2004 White Bear Lake grad, went to Florida for a few days in January to take part in the “Military Makeover” show on Lifetime.

“JDog has a relationship with Military Makeover. I was asked to go and at fi rst I was shocked because I am a quiet, reserved person, but when I realized they were just looking for someone to come and work hard and represent the JDog values of respect, integrity and trust, I was humbled,” Helm explained.

“Military Makeover with Montel” offers hope and a helping hand here on the home front to members of the military and their loved ones.

Montel Williams, a veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Navy, leads the Makeover team’s mission.

The series enlists designers, contractors, landscapers and other home improvement professionals to transform the homes and lives of military families across the country.

Each season focuses on one family.

The current season, which aired March 1, focuses on the Middleton family —Aaron, Holly and their four children, Trott, Scarlett, Magnolia and Kelvin—who have spent 20 years as a military family and shared deployments all over the world. In addition to a big health scare with Kelvin, who was born

Josh Helm, JDog Removal & Hauling Twin Cities district partner, recently helped out a family as part of Lifetime’s show “Military Makeover.” with multiple congenital birth defects that required surgery and almost took his life, one year ago the family unexpectedly lost their 5-year-old daughter Scarlett due to an undiagnosed illness.

“I was expecting to do more of what JDog does daily, which is hauling, but whatever needed to be done, we made sure it got done. This was a 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. full day. We would take breaks here and there, but we were defi nitely working hard and all of us were going at it good,” Helm recalled. “We had people in charge of the decorating, the makeover and the construction. People were telling us to go put up these shelves, hang

this TV, paint on the roof, we were doing anything and everything.”

The crew routinely had to “pause” from what they were doing to fi lm scenes. “Most of the day, we were just working, moving stuff, painting, hanging up things; but then they would say ‘Stop, we have to fi lm a scene here.’ They would have us walk up and down the driveway eight or nine times just to get the one scene fi lmed,” Helm said. “Besides all of the pressure of getting this house made over in a few days, we had to take breaks to fi lm scenes.”

The show reminded Helm of his military experience, being a part of something that was bigger than

himself. Helm has served two tours to Iraq with the Army.

“I enjoyed working with JDogs from around the country because I don’t get to do that too often. I also enjoyed working with other companies and hearing the family’s story and being able to help and change their lives,” Helm said. “It was an overwhelming experience that I will remember the rest of my life.”

Kids Abilities goes extra mile for children

Both 2-year-old Gunnar of Centerville and 5-year-old Renesmee of White Bear Lake have attended Kids Abilities their entire lives.

Kids Abilities opened its first location in Shoreview around 16 years ago and its second location in Hugo nine years ago.

It is owned by Carol Gilligan of Stillwater and Jenny Elholm of Lino Lakes.

“We have heard from families that the one thing that makes us unique is we offer physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy all at one location,” Elholm said, adding that Kids Abilities serves kids from birth to young adulthood.

Gunnar has Down syndrome and utilizes all three therapy services at Kids Abilities. Gunnar's mother, Gina Schmittdiel, explained that Gunnar has hypotonia, which is a state of low muscle tone (the amount of tension or resistance to stretch in a muscle), which often involves reduced muscle strength.

“Jenny and Heather (Haider, occupational therapist) work with him together.

It works really well for him because Heather can motivate him with a puzzle piece or something fine motor, and Jenny can work on his large motor stuff, whether it is standing on one foot or balancing,” Schmittdiel explained. She said the therapists give her tools she can work on at home, too.

Kids Abilities has helped Gunnar to be strong before, during and after a couple of surgeries. Last June, Gunnar underwent open-heart surgery for atrial septal defect (ASD), a birth defect that causes a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers. In November, Gunnar had another surgery after his sternum broke.

“I wouldn't have known what to do and I probably would have babied him, but they said he was strong and could do this,” Schmittdiel said. “He did awesome.

He was out of the hospital (after heart surgery) in three days, which is unheard of. (After the surgery in November), he was out of the hospital in one day and back to therapy in no time.”

Renesmee has Down Syndrome and hearing loss. She utilizes all three therapies Kid Abilities offers.

“Kids Abilities has helped her immensely. She learns so much here. If it wasn't for the therapy she gets here, I

Renesme also participates in Kids Abilities' dance class, which is an eightweek course with a recital at the end. The recital, which is open to the public, will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 5 at Hanifl Performing Arts Center in White Bear Lake.

Kids Abilities also offers group-based therapies in the summer, including handwriting groups and social groups. “Social groups are particularly helpful for kids who have autism to practice appropriate ways of interacting with their peers,” Elholm said.

In the past, Kids Abilities therapists have regularly visited Matagalpa, Nicaragua, on a service trip. They assist the community of Familias Especiales, a nonprofit organization that works with children with disabilities and their families, by fabricating seating systems for wheelchairs, fitting walkers and assisting with other equipment needs.

Therapists also work in the local schools with teachers and provide home visits to educate families. Elholm said the trip has not taken place in the past couple of years due to the unstable political climate in that country.

Bamboo huts and bungalows: Choose your own Chiang Mai adventure

Chiang Mai, a city of about 1 million in northern Thailand, is popular among tourists for its smalltown feel, historic city moat, night markets and as a launching point for jungle adventures.

Tour guide shops with bright advertisements line the streets on the east side of the city, interspersed with cafes, restaurants and hotels and guest houses ranging from $5 to $250 a night.

To spend extended time among the elephants, mountains, strawberry fields and banana trees, you have two options: book an overnight tour where you will likely be joined by a myriad of other tourists in a van or fi nd someplace to stay in rural Thailand on your own. My husband Andrew and I chose the latter during a trip in November.

First, we rented a motorbike and zoomed about an hour over the mountains to the Samoeng Forest, with a stop to ride elephants bareback at Maesa Elephant camp along the way. Our talented elephant painted us a flower using his trunk.

We rewarded him with a basket of bananas, which he scooped from our hands one by one with his whooshing trunk.

We stayed in a bungalow at Rai Napa Phupha, a strawberry farm, sipping strawberry smoothies as the sky turned pink at sunset.

The $18 wooden bungalow was equipped with the essentials — a private bathroom with a hot shower, cozy blanket for the chilly mountain night, and electricity. Complimentary breakfast was rice soup and there were a variety of strawberry items to purchase. We took a short walk to a waterfall among the banana trees and greeted the farmers as they tended to the growing berries.

To fi nd a hut made exclusively of bamboo and grass, we then motored back over the mountain and north a couple hours to the Bamboo Country Lodge near Mae Taeng, stopping to pick strawberries at another farm along the way. I ate fresh strawberries on the back of the motorbike as Andrew curved round mountain bends.

We drove by elephants settling in for the evening as the sun slipped behind the mountains. We bumped along a long dirt driveway to a jungle haven, a small clearing dotted with bamboo huts. We were greeted by a cheerful English-speaking Thai man and his wife, who made us dinner for a few dollars. We then settled into our $29 A-frame bamboo hut for the night, accompanied by the sounds of the jungle night.

In the morning, we awoke to a large American breakfast spread among the banana trees. The Thai man had worked in America but was happy to be home in his jungle, sharing it with others. A monsoon earlier that year had wiped out some of his bungalows and huts, but he was busy rebuilding, the smell of varnish wafting in the jungle air.

We stopped overnight at our guest house in Chiang Mai and rented a car before heading a couple of hours south to Doi Inthanon National Park, where the highest peak in Thailand is located.

We stayed in the foothills at Chai Lai Orchid, where elephants live in the forest among the bungalows. To get to the hotel, we walked across a suspension bridge, a river roaring below, to be greeted by an elephant at check-in. Our large $36 bungalow sat atop a hill next to the banana trees, a wraparound porch adding to the typical bungalow amenities.

I snuck them a piece of watermelon from the large continental American breakfast served just down the hill. As we checked out of our bungalow, a mom and baby elephant lumbered by after a walk through the jungle.

I sneaked a few bananas in an elephant trunk and bought a handmade elephant keychain to support the eco-lodge before we left. Chai Lai Orchid, begun by an American woman, offers elephants an alternative to providing rides in heavy carts. It is also a hospitality training center for people from the Karen tribe, who grew up in nearby villages. The goal is to prevent young Karen women from being trafficked by teaching them hospitality, business and English skills.

We drove up the mountain, whizzing by strawberry fields and stopping at a Hmong village for lunch.

There was a breathtaking view awaiting us at the top. Range after range of rounded mountains spread below to the south and west as a late afternoon mist rose from the earth.

We headed wistfully back to the city. I looked around but didn’t see the strawberry-elephant mountain-bungalow safari advertised anywhere.

Zephyrs set for state hoops, 58 years after first trip

No need to keep hearkening to 1961.

The Mahtomedi Zephyrs will be playing in a state boys basketball tournament this very day (Wednesday, March 20).

After earning its first state trip in 58 years, Mahtomedi faces Princeton in the first round of Class 3A at Williams Arena with a noon tip-off. Mahtomedi (24-5) is seeded fifth and Princeton (26-3) fourth.

“They have five players averaging in double figures,” said Zephyr coach Keith Newman, relishing the task of preparing for a state tournament, rather than watching it glumly like the last two years when his teams fell one win short.

“They have an excellent point guard, No. 3, Flicek, who has been starting since his freshman year, and great perimeter shooters around him, especially No. 24, Williams. They also have a 6-7 post, Stimmler, who finishes very well inside, and is an excellent rebounder.”

Mahtomedi finally broke through the state tournament by turning back Totino-Grace 58-49 in the Section 4AAA championship Thursday evening at St. Paul Washington Technology Magnet School.

Zac Centers has heard all about that 58-year wait, but only the last three years concerned him.

“This is my third time,” the senior guard said, “and we finally got over the hump. This year, we thought for sure this was our year.”

For Newman, it went deeper than that.

“I’ve coached 13 years, and we’ve played in the finals seven times,” he winced. “We’ve had some really good

teams, too, and never got over that hump until now. Having that looming over us all this time, that’s been tough.”

While winning state titles in eight other sports, Mahtomedi had made just one state trip in boys basketball in its history.

“This definitely means a lot, because we have not gone to state in, like, forever,” said top scorer J’vonne Hadley. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to go. I went last year and watched, and felt bad not to be playing.”

To be sure, it was an easier path this year as the Zephyrs beat three teams below .500 in the sectionals, in contrast to, for instance, last year when Columbia Heights reached the state finals after beating them.

Mahtomedi won despite getting just 10 points from 28-ppg star Hadley, who sat out five minutes with four fouls, but was a force at crunch time.

Sam Bell was high point man with 13 points, not a familiar role for the hard-working guard averaging six points. Devin Melzer netted 11 points and Centers 10. Bell and Centers each made three 3-pointers. Cole Chapman added six points and Luke Ricker and Andrew Murphy four each.

Riley Burger sank 20 points and Eric Krieger 14 for Totino-Grace, which made eight 3-pointers. The Eagles were 13-16, playing a mostly Class 4A schedule.

After Hadley picked up his fourth foul, Totino-Grace made up a five-point deficit but could not take the lead. When Hadley came back, the Zephyrs sprang him for a spectacular dunk off an inbounds pass from Luke Rickers under the basket, resembling a quick-set for a kill in volleyball. “We put that play in a couple weeks

ago,” Newman said, “hoping we can catch somebody (defender) being a little over-anxious.”

That gave the Zephyrs a 50-45 lead. The Eagles pulled back within 49-48 but were blanked the rest of the way, with the 6-8 Chapman twice blocking shots in the lane. Hadley powered past a defender for a layup, then drove to the hoop again, got double-teamed, and dished off to Centers, who drilled a 3-pointer from the corner, making it 55-49.

In the semifinals the previous Monday, the Zephyrs beat Columbia Heights 78-59, led by Hadley with 28 points, and Centers

with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Melzer notched 10 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, and Andrew Murphy 10 points and nine rebounds.

All of which means the Zephyrs are still prepping for the next game — in mid-March — three generations after last having the privilege. Getting back to the coach’s scouting report: “They (Princeton) love to play up-tempo; they average 84.8 points. Getting back in transition, and finding their shooters in both ‘man’ and when we play our zone (are important). Keeping their big kid off the glass.

Star of Zephyrs’ 1961 state team elated to hear they’re finally back

Mike Patterson, a 75-year-old retiree wintering in Florida, has two good reasons to follow the state basketball tournament back in Minnesota.

For one, his hometown, Mahtomedi, is there, for the first time since he led the 1960-61 Zephyrs into the big show unbeaten. They placed fifth with a 26-1 record.

And, his grandson is playing for Lakeville North.

Lane Patterson, whose son Carter is a starter or sixth man for Lakeville North, called Mike with the news about Mahtomedi.

“My son told me, ‘Dad, guess what, the Zephyrs are in!’ That was really exciting to hear,” Patterson said.

Mahtomedi will duel Princeton at noon Wednesday at Williams Arena, the same almost-century-old structure where Patterson’s team played not only state, but regional games.

“I didn’t think it would take this long,” Patterson chuckled, about the 58 years between state tournaments.

Patterson was a 6-6 forward at Mahtomedi who grew to 6-9 when he starred at UM-Duluth.

He averaged 24.6 points as a senior and made the most memorable shot in Zephyr hoops history, a long jumper with six seconds left to beat Anoka 43-42 in the Region 4 finals at Williams, giving Mahtomedi its first state trip and, until now, the last.

“We were unbeaten, and so was Anoka. There was only one other unbeaten team, Duluth Central,” said Patterson. Duluth Central would win the state title.

The other Mahtomedi starters were 6-5 center Ed Springborn, 6-0 guard Phil Widenstrom, 6-0 guard/ forward Steve Ross, and 6-0 guard Jerry VanBlaricomb. “We were the iron five,” Patterson said. The five played almost the whole game. One sophomore spelled them, Rick Quicksell, a 6-3 guard/forward.

At the state tournament, one class in those days, the Zephyrs were stymied by Sauk Centre 54-40 in the first round, their lone defeat. Mahtomedi defeated Danube 70-59 and Edgerton 51-49 to earn the consolation title. Patterson got some notoriety for a dunk, which, Sid Hartman noted in his column, was the first ever seen at the state tournament.

Patterson erupted for 50 points in an 86-50 win over Lakeville, then a conference rival, at home, on Jan. 17, 1961. He was surprised to hear, in the call from White Bear Press on Sunday, that the record was finally broken when J’vonne Hadley scored 52 against Hill-Murray on Feb. 8. Patterson didn’t seem to mind, and asked some questions about Hadley. “I know he’s averaging 28.3 points,” said Patterson, referring to dispatches he gets from back home.

Patterson had a great career at UM-Duluth, graduating with a batch of scoring and rebounding records, including career points, which stood for 26 years.

He averaged 24 points as a junior and about 21 as a senior. Then he played three years professionally for a Goodyear team that toured the world, their schedule including Olympic teams from South America and Europe.

After that, he worked for Goodyear, then for a Utah paper company, both in sales, before returning to Minnesota to purchase a radio station in Aitkin from his father-in-law, a lawyer who owned it but wanted out. Patterson and wife Judy have lived there since 1980. Their sons Ryan and Lane played for the Aitkin Gobblers.

The “iron five” of 1961 are all alive and well. Springborn is a lifelong farmer near Lake Elmo. Widenstrom worked for 3M. Ross, who also went to UM-Duluth as a baseball pitcher, was a CPA until retirement.

Van Blaricomb ran his own plumbing business.

Patterson returned to Mahtomedi four times in recent years when he, Ross, Van Blaricomb, and another classmate, Steve Wrabel, were inducted into the Zephyr Hall of Fame. Noting that their football team had two unbeaten seasons and the baseball team, for whom he played first base, was also conference champion, Patterson declared, “We had the best run of athletes they’d ever seen at Mahtomedi.”

Nordic Ski honors announced Olivia Schwintek and Tryg Solberg, both seniors, got the Most Valuable Skier awards on the White Bear Lake Nordic team. With Solberg placing seventh and Schwintek eighth at state, White Bear Lake was one of only three teams with a top-10 entrant in both genders. Named to the All-Suburban East team were those two, and Claire Larson and Lauren Loppnow. Honorable mention went to Tom Perreira, Isaac Maruyana and Emily Brockberg. Named most improved were Logan Swanson, Trevor Lock, Megan Ryan Anderson, and Tanner Hoel, all first-year skiers. Next year’s captains will be Kolby Bachmeier, Lauren Loppnow and Liam Fritz. These awards were announced by coach Seth Salenger.

It was a wild week indeed. We totaled over an inch of rain, 1.08”, from March 12-14, with over half of it coming on the 14th (.54”). The rain, combined with warmer temperatures, made for a rapid snow melt. If not you, you probably know someone who experienced some flooding woes. From basements, sidewalks, roads and ends of driveways, nothing was untouched. Roads became a little dicey as temperatures dropped below freezing, and flooded areas turned to ice. I myself became a victim of the ice Sunday morning and took a spill. Friend Chris did a mini polar plunge when he fell through some ice with a half foot of water below it. Touring on an e-bike The great equalizer in mountainous terrain

There is a mountain waiting in front of me. If I can ever get my bike and myself up there, the view from the top should be spectacular. It had better be, because the only view I'll get on the way up will be of the pavement rising up to meet me in the face.

As I grind away, one knee-aching inch at a time, I dream about my bike having another gear. I'm not talking about another granny gear. I've run through those and have now let gravity pull my feet off the pedals and down to the pavement as I walk my bike the rest of the way up and around and round to the top. They fantasize about a battery-powered motor, otherwise known as an e-bike.

Before I carry on about e-bikes, I think the e-bike manufacturers should pay me for all the touting of their product I'm about to do — or at least buy an expensive ad in the newspaper you're reading.

Anyway, it's not too early to start thinking about an e-bike. It's been snowing heavily recently, but we'll soon be pushing our bikes over crusty speckled snowbanks to find a clear path on the trails. An e-bike should assuage any fears that we have too many hills here in Minnesota and not enough good knees.

I found out how useful e-bikes can be during my winter vacation to a warmer climate south of the equator. I should think that any e-bike that passed muster on the mountains in southern Chile's Lake District should serve Midwestern riders well. If you travel, you'll be able to ride real mountains — as in Colorado, Alaska, Italy or Croatia — with an e-bike. Chilkoot Hill in Stillwater might be a different story, however.

An e-bike, usually a mountain bike or hybrid bike, has a battery mounted on the frame that powers a small motor on the rear wheel. The motor turns the rear wheel. The powered motor can keep turning the wheel while the biker also pedals. Depending on the setting the rider chooses, that motor can turn the wheel slightly and assist the biker a little bit or turn the wheel rapidly and rocket the biker up any hill.

The e-bike usually has four settings, depending on how much of an assist the rider wants. The bike's standard gear system is used in conjunction with the e-bike assist to provide even more

choices. The e-bike will have the regular gear shift controls on the handle bar and an additional up-and-down e-bike control right next to it.

With an e-bike, being tired doesn't enter into consideration at all — unless you want to be tired. You can go all day on the e-bike. The battery is there to have the energy drained from IT — not you. After a little practice on the e-bike, you'll know how to pace yourself to make your battery — and you — last all day.

I'll bet you didn't know that on very steep downhills, your e-bike has a negative setting that acts as an engine brake, which also recharges your bike's battery at the same time.

A purist may be tempted to lament that she didn't get up the big hill only under her own power. Oh. Well. If having help bothers you, tell yourself that after the bike ride, you'll still be walking around on your very own knees.

An e-bike doesn't come without cautions. The first caution is that you do not want the battery to run down when you are miles away from other transportation. After you've flown up the hill in the highest setting, drop down to low assist or no assist if you're continuing on flat terrain.

The fastest way to drain the battery is to use full power on a long, steep hill that goes on for miles. Although it's tempting to fly up the hill and be done with it, very long hills should be climbed while you're on the first or second gear wheel and with the e-bike setting at one or two.

Secondly, e-bikes are heavy because the batteries weigh around 15 pounds. If you completely drain the battery, you'll be biking around on a much heavier bike. On a related note, the heavier bike is also more difficult to control when

walking it – especially up a hill.

A fully charged battery can easily last for a good six hours of riding hilly terrain, depending on how much you help the bike help you. Monitor the battery gauge on your control panel often.

A third caution is to avoid bumping the controls if you're walking your bike.

If you were to accidentally activate the top setting while walking the bike, it could fly out of your hands and drag you along with it, likely into a ditch.

A fourth caution is that the battery will live in the spot usually occupied by a water bottle. Find other arrangements that don't allow for your water bottle to fall out onto the road.

The bottom line about e-bikes is that they are easy to learn and even easier to use.

You can most likely buy an entire e-bike for up to $1,000 or a conversion kit for the front or rear wheel of your own bike for an average of $150-$250.

The expense and a few minor adjustments to your riding habits may just keep you biking longer and more often.

An e-bike will open up your world to keep right on riding. Ascents no longer change the complexion of any ride, except for how much more scenery you're going to see.

Free community baby shower Senator appointed to education commission Students receive superior rating at solo, ensemble contest Seventeen Mahtomedi High School students performed at the Region 4AA Vocal Solo and Ensemble Contest at the South Campus of White Bear Lake High School last month. Performing students prepared and memorized a folk song, art song, or aria to sing for an adjudicator. Scores fall under the category of superior, excellent, good or fair. If a student receives a superior award, they receive a certificate and medal from the Minnesota State High School League.

Students that received a superior rating included Sonia Gloege, Nick Hammerschmidt, Cassie Kasper, Kayla Kroschel, Max Lakso, Sarah Lisowski, Anna Martinson, Claire Nelson, Leah Thompson, Claire Wendland and Sydney Winecke. In each of the seven sites in the state, the adjudicator can select a singer to receive the best-of-site award. Sonia Gloege was the recipient of that award in Site 7.

Gov. Tim Walz recently appointed Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood) as one of Minnesota’s members on the Education Commission of the States (ECS). Sen. Wiger will work with legislators across the country in interstate efforts to advance effective education policy. The commission tracks policy, translates research, provides advice and creates opportunities for state policymakers to learn from one another. It was founded as a result of the creation of the Compact for Education, an interstate compact approved by Congress. Sen. Wiger was previously appointed to the ECS by Gov. Dayton and he also served on ECS with former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who was then the ECS chair. Sen. Wiger will continue to serve on the Commission of the States’ Steering Committee and Nominating Committee.

Student receives volunteer award Jed Fisher, a student at Academy for Sciences & Agriculture (AFSA) in Vadnais Heights, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. AFSA nominated the Maplewood resident for national honors this fall in recognition of his volunteer service. Over the summer of 2018, Fisher completed more than 100 hours of volunteer service. His hours of volunteering were spent working within the surrounding communities at various events.

The longest-serving volunteers got started in the mid-1960s through the Junior League of St. Paul. The organization promoting women’s volunteerism and community leadership had partnered with the Science Museum of Minnesota to develop the nature center, one of the fi rst in the nation, and supplied funds and a regiment of committed volunteers to get it off the ground.

“It’s given me satisfaction, confidence, a job,” sayid Royer, of North Oaks, who went from Warner to working at the Raptor Center before returning to the nature center as soon as she retired.

Volunteering at the nature center has given the group a place to connect and contribute to the community.

“I’ve grown a better appreciation of the natural world and it makes you realize this wasn’t an accident; this was created, it’s something to observe and to give thanks for, too,” Roeske said. “Whenever I really want to unwind, it makes it easier to withdraw and fi nd that spot in yourself that rejuvenates you.”

their bonds are as deep as any family. They say their good health and clear minds are a benefit of volunteering, thanks to a lifetime outside, studying nature and learning with the children.

“Do you suppose that because we had to learn all the small details it is pushing us to not get Alzheimer’s?” Patty wonders. Her friends quickly nod and agree.

They have learned the names and ways of plants and animals. They have learned how to tell the sex of warblers, identify the blooms of wildflowers and how to see the stories in animal tracks on fresh snow.

They have learned how to open children’s eyes in awe of Minnesota’s natural ecosystems.

“Never stop learning, I say that to the kids,” said Wojahn. “I tell them we have to learn new things all the time. That’s what keeps our brains going. It helps keep us young. There aren’t many days (at Warner) where I don’t feel like I am challenged in some way.”

They learned from the center’s staff, particularly founding director Bernie Fashingbauer, his successor Tom Anderson and current director Ron Lawrenz. They have also learned from each other, from na-

learned about teaching effectively, keeping the kids happy and safe and, of course, all about their natural neighbors, from bugs to birds.

One day in May, Patty, of North Oaks, was standing at a small table under a tree near the center’s main building. One of Warner’s original volunteers, she was perfectly comfortable holding a song sparrow in one hand while with her other hand she carefully wrapped a tiny metal band around its leg and recorded numbers in a thick ledger on the desk.

A dozen third-graders leaned in as close as they could get to the bird and the calm woman who held it.

Banding birds has been a key part of volunteering at Warner since the start.

Sweeny, also of North Oaks, recalls a day canoeing on Terrapin Lake and seeing a freshwater sponge under the water. Not even the director knew the creatures lived at the nature center before then. “I just happened to fi nd it because the kids are slow with the paddling,” Sweeny said, remembering how they zigzagged down the lake.

Children follow volunteers on hikes through woods and prairies, and on snowshoes across frozen lakes. They delight in discoveries made by dipping nets in marshes for frogs and dragonflies, and see the science of bird-banding while getting a close-up look at many special species.

Trips to Lee & Rose Warner Nature Center in Marine on St. Croix have opened many young eyes to the wonders of nature over the past 50 years. The oldest private nature center in Minnesota celebrated its golden anniversary last year.

Among 900 acres of oak and maple forests, prairies, wetlands and lakes in rural Washington County, Warner continues to provide singular experiences.

The programs are free for schools, making it available to students from all over the Twin Cities. The outdoor opportunities are offered at no charge thanks to the generosity of its founders and funders — and staff naturalists and volunteers who introduce the children to the woods, wetlands and wildlife.

Many of the same people have donated their time for decades, and some of the volunteers have been there since the beginning. Almost a dozen have at least 30 years of service each, including: Gerry Erickson (45 years), Bonnie Handy (47), JoAnn Hondlik (49), Joan Huneke (35), Pat Markwardt (36), Joen Overby (47), Missy Patty (51), Jan Roeske (29), Jean Royer (34), Marie Sweeny (49), and Barb Wojahn (50).

“It’s a day off from your regular life, and you get to focus on children and teaching them whatever you need to teach them that day, whether it’s birds or aquatics or deer,” said Handy, of White Bear Lake.

“You drive in here when you’re going to be volunteering for the day, (and) everything in your life goes away,” said Wojahn, also of White Bear Lake. “When you’re driving home, all of a sudden, it comes back.”

Legislators testify on behalf of TCE bills Sen. Chuck Wiger, Sen. Jason Isaacson and Sen. Roger Chamberlain testified before the Senate Environmental and Natural Resources Finance Committee for SF 2307, which establishes a TCE emission response account in the environmental fund. Money in the account may be spent to assess and address the effects of unlawful emissions of TCE in the TCE area of concern after Water Gremlin admitted to emitting high levels of TCE in the air. The White Bear Township company was assessed a fine of $4.5 million, the largest fine in Minnesota history for a polluter.

The bill also says the commissioner must work with stakeholders to identify and recommend to the Legislature projects to receive funding. Stakeholders include local governments located in or near the TCE area of concern and elected officials representing the TCE are of concern, plus indi-

viduals and businesses located in the area.

In his testimony, Sen. Wiger made the point that neighbors of Water Gremlin have a great deal of anxiety over the pollution. “Hundreds of people are wondering what the impact is of pollution that has gone on since 2002 with emissions not properly recorded,” said Sen. Wiger.

Sen. Isaacson said Water Gremlin makes 30 percent of the world’s battery posts.

Sen. Chamberlain said his bill would “put a wall around the money” in the environmental fund so that it is used for the intended purpose.

He said working with stakeholders is critically important.

The bill was approved and sent to the Senate Finance Committee.

See retirement as a beginning, not an end Quite often soon-to-be retirees focus on the end of a career or the end of a stage in life without putting enough focus on the possibilities ahead.

This is a prime time to fi nd a new social network, join a ministry, and much more.

Choose your living space Retirement can be an opportunity to shed an old skin and try on a new one - especially as it pertains to housing. There are options to downsize for empty-nesters or even to secure resources to “age in place.” According to United Income, a money management service, retirees should try out particular scenarios and locations prior to jumping in. Rent in a particular neighborhood, or house sit and try things on for size. Airbnb and other types of services can make this trial easy.
