Fifth-positive patient tells story

This year’s Easter will look very different. Even though people may not be able to attend worship services in person, host a big meal or attend brunch, area churches want people to know that they are still there for them, just in a different way.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, churches have had to adapt their programming to still serve their members during these unprecedented times.

White Bear Lake United Methodist Church About four weeks ago White Bear Lake United Methodist Church started planning for how it would continue to serve its members during the pandemic. In the beginning the church held in-person services with social distancing guidelines, but it has since moved its efforts all online.

In addition to its regular Sunday worship services being available online, the church has implemented an evening prayer every night at 7 p.m. on Facebook live. Youth and children’s ministries, Sunday School and confi rmation has also moved online.

“We are trying to give people a feel for being in worship but also changing it enough to realize that this is something people are watching in their homes with their families and that is different,” explained Senior Pastor Bill Eaves. “We are learning how to do that.”

Eaves said in times of uncertainty, people can start to have questions such as “is God punishing us?” or “Is God trying to teach us a lesson?” “Our God

The disease twice put him in the hospital. He now tests negative for the virus.

The 57-year-old Rotarian is sharing his personal journey with the respiratory illness in hopes people heed public health guidelines to minimize its spread.

Bartz was the fifth person in Minnesota to test positive for coronavirus.

The state health department affirmed his suspicions March 11 after the White Bear Township resident developed a low-grade fever and bad cough on March 6 and self-quarantined. A trio of concerns provided impetus to seek the test: he had been traveling, he was symptomatic and he has a compromised immune system.

Last summer, Bartz was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called cardiac sarcoidosis. Cardiologists at Mayo Clinic put Bartz on immunosuppressive therapy in October. The treatment is proving successful; however, the downside is the therapy makes him more susceptible to other illnesses, like COVID-19. His doctors told him to get tested.

After doing some online “detective work,” as he calls it, Bartz is convinced he contracted COVID-19 during the Rotary Club’s annual ski trip to Vail. He even knows when and where he was exposed.

“We were in a bar Feb. 25. The place was packed,” Bartz recalled. “A guy was playing guitar and there were a few tables filled with foreigners. I read some newspaper articles later from Vail; the musician that evening became COVID-19 positive and was hospitalized March 10.

He unfortunately passed away March 21.

Polish and proud of it. Over the years, Bob survived TB with a long stay at the “Prev” and prostate cancer. One of the most enjoyable times in his life was while in the US Army in Germany. After returning, he worked in the trucking industry for many years, but was never happier than after retirement when he could enjoy fishing, house and yard work, visiting over the fence with neighbors, time with friends visiting and playing cards, delivering Meals on Wheels, and enjoying grandchildren’s activities and achievements. He was the go- to driver for many excursions (more than a few to the casino) with mother-in law, sisters in law and sister. Many thanks to the Oncology Department at Lakeview Hospital for their friendly and professional care. Private Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be set at a later date.

FAQ: The local news business

D

uring this spring subscription drive, some readers ask about the news business. Here are some frequently asked questions.

Q: How many newspapers are there?

A: In Minnesota, 289 reaching more than two million homes. In Wisconsin, 189 reaching 2.8 million homes.

These numbers go to home delivery print readers, which is half of the audience.

The other half reads online. Most newspapers also have popular social media pages with thousands of followers. Todays’ mix of print, digital and social reach gives most local newspapers more readers compared to previous high points.

Q: Are newspapers profitable?

A: Before the coronavirus outbreak, most newspapers were profitable. Industry margins declined after department stores Matt McMillan consolidated and digital news and ad delivery arrived. Publicly-traded newspaper margins are public and available to search.

Privately-owned newspapers, like the one you are reading today, don’t publicly report earnings. Some families invest more in news, have lower margins, but more local stories and readers. Coronavirus hit public and private newspapers equally. The number of readers spiked more than 30% at most local newspapers. Despite adding readers, some revenue has declined due to customers delaying buys until after the outbreak passes.

Above the Fold

Q: Why are some newspapers closing?

A: Like other industries, business fundamentals are the core of closures. Some have high debt and little money to operate, some have expensive pension plans, some have reduced volume and an inability to scale down to an affordable cost structure, etc.

A local newspaper reflects its local economy. Strong local economies can translate into strong local newspapers. Meeting readers’ and marketers’ needs is job No. 1. Especially during a crisis.

Q: What are news deserts?

A: News deserts, coined by Columbia Journalism Review or CJR, are places without a daily newspaper, and without a newspaper audited by a firm known as AAM. Creating a U.S. map of these places is noble by CJR. It cares about journalism. However, thousands of newspapers are not daily, or audited by AAM. For example, Polk County in Minnesota is listed as a desert. Polk County, according to Minnesota Newspaper Association, has six newspapers. While not daily or audited by AAM, these newspapers send reporters to local meetings, sporting events and festivals, some provide daily reporting online. Polk County is a desert on a national map. It is not a desert in real life. There are real news deserts, which is a problem, but not to the scale described.

Q: What do I get if I subscribe?: A: A healthy local news business relies on three things: 1. Readers who care about community and act by subscribing/investing in our reporting staff.

2. Advertisers who buy marketing campaigns to tap this quality audience of readers. (ask us for customer reviews – it works great. Readers respond. We have proof).

3. A team of dedicated employees who care about you, our readers and marketing customers.

We are the only media at most places we cover.

Residents here benefit from reporters working here.

True news deserts have higher taxes and less sense of community. It isn’t possible to do what we do without subscribers. Or, advertisers. Or, employees.

Education coping with COVID-19

T

he COVID-19 crisis unfolds hourly. Our lives and future are significantly disrupted, especially for students, parents and staff.

Students—nearly one million K-12 in Minnesota —are now engaged in distance learning, which will likely continue through the school year. Postsecondary schools— which already offer many online courses—are transforming further, too.

Distance learning is a way of learning remotely without being in regular face-toface contact with a teacher in the classroom. The practice is rapidly expanding in higher education.

Many students at Legislator Century College (nearly 25%) Lingo had previously been enrolled in Chuck Wiger online classes.

Responding resiliently to the pandemic: • Century and faculty team have converted over 1,000 face-to-face courses to a fully online or hybrid format.

• Other support services offered to students are also being provided virtually by staff—all to ensure students finish the spring semester.

During the past two weeks, area k-12 administrators, teachers and staff have • Worked long hours preparing student learning plans which address required academic standards.

• Reached out to students and parents, offering words of encouragement, and many students have had learning activities.

• Taken steps so students have access to a computer and working internet connection at home. In many cases, this meant delivering computers to students and their families.

Educators and staff are doing their best to address these and a range of issues from grading to graduation (and like all of us, they are also faced with challenges in their personal lives). Addressing needs in areas such as special education, English language learners and homeless students provide added challenges.

Free meals for students have been made available at various sites. Check the district websites for exact locations and times. Free childcare is also available if you are a healthcare or emergency worker.

School buildings are getting a deep cleaning. All hands-on deck!

I’m very encouraged and thankful for area school efforts. Inspiring examples: Here are some tips about how parents (or grandparents, caregivers) can help kids learn at home: Work on one or two subjects each day. Don’t try to replicate the structure of a six-hour school day.

Learn alongside your kids. Use some of the many online resources.

Don’t worry if you feel rusty in algebra or don’t speak a second language.

Find a rhythm that works for you and the kids. At the end of the day, talk about the highs and lows and adjust as needed.

Plan in daily brain and activity breaks, as well as things to look forward to each day.

Relationships come first. Then assignments. If kids are anxious, becoming a drill sergeant won’t work.

Help your kids find their passions.

The idea is to spark a love of learning. Does your child love animals? Look up documentaries on lions or penguins and ask them to do a presentation for the family. Have younger kids draw pictures and tell a story, while older kids can design a PowerPoint presentation.

At the Legislature, we are actively working to help provide resources needed for area schools to get the job done. The federal government is, too, plus local government, businesses and nonprofits, who are hurting, but resolved and determined.

Discussions and emails are ongoing.

I pledge to do whatever I can as we work to develop needed bipartisan solutions. We will.

Children now need extra hugs and assurance that they are secure and loved. Students, parents and staff increasingly miss the interpersonal relationships and activities at school.

Friendships, sharing, socializing, extracurricular activities, prom, memories, much more. We appreciate and support you!

Together, we will get through this. We will learn and be better prepared. Students are our future.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Denial exacerbates crises

Much of the fear and anxiety from the COVID-19 pandemic is a result of the uncertainty created by politicians and a political party bashing science, ignoring facts, spreading misinformation and dismantling the capabilities of the government to deal with major crises like this.

When political actors build a narrative that the government is always the problem and science isn't real, they create conditions for a pandemic (which we had a head start on the rest of the world to prepare for) to accelerate (117,000 COVID-19 cases and 2,010 deaths as of March 28).

This parallels the ongoing debate in opinions in this publication.

Ignoring or downplaying the science and math of a global pandemic is similar to the denials of climate change. May we learn from this short-term disruption on how to better understand the potential longterm disruptions we are facing. May we renew our trust in science and not the false promises of short-sighted, self-serving politicians.

Good grief

I am one of the volunteers on our district's Future of Learning Committee as a citizen of White Bear Township, an educator in the school district and a White Bear Lake alumnus. I am in complete disbelief that anyone (Catherine Schultz and another letter writer before her) would protest an invitation to young people, current members of the White Bear Lake Area school district, to attend a LISTENING session with our committee.

Students were not given a blank check and told to purchase whatever furniture they wanted; instead, they came prepared and reflected on the types of activities where they learn best. Then we as a committee took what we heard from them, combined with our own research and experience, to consider what types of learning spaces we need in our new building structures. Taking

the time to really understand what spaces are necessary to provide our young people the 21st century education that they deserve seems like the best possible stewardship of tax dollars.

I know in this time of hyper-partisan politics there is nothing that one can do to appease some insistent on criticism. But, having a problem with listening to our children's experiences? Really, that's where we are at?

Throw away trash

My name is Aubrey Linder (age 9).

I’m writing this letter to ask if there is any way you could put an article in the newspaper about how people should throw away any trash they have. It just ruins the environment.

My family and I have been going to Deer Meadow Park for the last couple of days and we have found a lot of trash and recycling littering the streets and park. Unfortunately, the trash is not in the trash, it is in the forest and on the ground. I think people think they can throw trash on the ground and the snow will make it disappear. Some kind people might pick it up but that still doesn’t mean people should throw it anywhere. Thank you for understanding.

Pitch in for the public good

Here’s a big thank you to our city engineer and his crew who are already out fi lling in potholes in Vadnais Heights. I haven’t seen them, but I have seen their work. In this time of pandemic when nerves are especially frayed, their efforts to enhance public safety make our daily journeys smoother.

We can all similarly pitch in for the public good.

Recently, my husband and I learned of the DonateGoodStuff. org website that directs people to where they can donate needed items such as personal protective equipment for hospital workers. We searched through our cupboards and discovered we had unopened boxes of Nitrile gloves, and even a new box of the prized N95 masks made by 3M that hospital workers so desperately need. The website directed us where we could donate them.

I encourage other readers to look through their cupboards as well for masks, gloves, shoe covers and safety goggles. As important now as ever

During this challenging and difficult time, let’s remember what we can do for our local communities today.

Support our local nonprofit organizations including the YMCA, White Bear Center for the Arts, Lakeshore Players Theatre and Hanifl Performing Arts Center, White Bear and Mahtomedi education foundations and others. Many of these groups have had to cancel fundraising events, but still have ex-

penses that need to be paid in order to provide services in the future.

Continue to fi nancially support our many churches that have not been able to provide worship services, even though their messages are as important now as ever.

Support our local businesses and restaurants. We want them here tomorrow. Many also contribute their goods or services throughout the year to our community.

Support our local newspaper with subscriptions and advertising. Press Publications keeps us informed by printing hundreds of community notices and stories throughout the year.

Delay school construction

To School Board #624: The White Bear Area School Board has a civic responsibility to consider delaying the upcoming school construction activity connected to the $326 million referendum passed in 2019.

The citizens of White Bear Lake do not need this additional fi nancial burden in addition to the virus pandemic. The delay should be for a period of two years or until the pandemic fi nancial problems have been solved. This school board should consider this civic duty as a reality of many independent companies working with state and federal governments to solve this war on the invisible enemy.

A celebration of Suzanne's life is planned for a later date.

Rose Mary Francis Beumer Rose Mary Francis Beumer of White Bear Lake.

With profound sadness we share the passing of Rose Mary, our loving and devoted mother and friend to many. She was surrounded by her daughters and she passed while sleeping peacefully in her residence on March 23, 2020. She was 93.

Rose Mary was born in St. Augusta Township on December 17, 1926 to Norbert and Bertha Thometz (Reichel). She married John “Jack” Beumer, her soulmate, in 1956.

A loving mother and homemaker, Rose Mary was a great cook and enjoyed sharing with others. She shared her table, her food, her heart and her warmth with all who entered her home. She was happiest when her home was filled with people, laughter and food - always lots and lots of good food! Her greatest joy was spending time with her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her love for family was unconditional and unwavering. She covered the walls of her home with photos of the people and moments that brought her great joy in order to keep them close to her heart. To know Rose Mary, was to visit her home and experience her warmth and generosity. Rose Mary lived independently in the home that she and Jack built in 1960 until her passing.

“Romie” (as her family lovingly referred to her) grew up on a farm and learned the meaning of family early in life. Throughout her life she was a caregiver. From when she was a child and left school in her early teens to help raise her four younger siblings due to illness within the family, to raising her five daughters, to caring for her husband when he became ill

and passed away. She was always there for others.

Rose Mary loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling across the country in a camper. She also loved being at our family cabin (even riding ATVs with Jack).

She was also a talented seamstress and gardener. She always looked forward to the spring as she enjoyed being outside and caring for her flowers. Rose Mary seldom sat still for there was always work to be done.

She was a person of strong faith and a member of St. Pius X parish for over 60 years. In times of struggle, she relied on her faith for strength. In times of joy, she thanked Heaven for her blessings. She enjoyed sharing her faith and spent countless hours in prayer.

Rose Mary was a beautiful and gentle soul. She was an incredibly strong woman, who never gave up. Her life was well lived. She will be dearly missed and lives forever in our hearts. She is now at home in God’s Kingdom.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Beumer; daughter, Cindy Beumer; parents, Norbert and Bertha (Reichel) Thometz; sister, Doris Kilian; and brother, Paul Thometz.

She is survived by her sisters, Mildred Hinkemeyer, and Margaret Hiemenz; daughters Kathleen Graven (Loren), Renee Peterson (Randy), Mary Beumer (Jim) and Jackie Lauer (Tom); twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Rose Mary will be held at a future date. A private family burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • A North Branch man, 40, was arrested at 9:17 p.m. March 18 in the 1700 block of Buerkle Road for violating controlled substance laws after he was pulled over following a shoplifting complaint in the 3200 block of Highway 61.

• A rear license plate belonging to a Hugo woman was reported stolen March 22 from her vehicle while it was parked in a restaurant parking lot in the 1000 block of County Road E. • A resident in the 100 block of Primrose Court on March 23 reported an unknown person for hacking into his Yahoo email account and ordering a cell phone from Verizon. The purchase was canceled, and no money was lost.

• An Inver Grove Heights man, 28, was arrested March 23 at the Vadnais Heights Target store in the 900 block of County Road E for felony theft after he was caught shoplifting.

• A St. Paul woman, 25, was arrested March 24

at the Vadnais Heights Target store for misdemeanor theft and on an outstanding Hennepin County felony warrant. She also faces gross misdemeanor charges of giving false information to authorities after she falsely claimed to have ingested heroin to stall her arrest.

• A White Bear Lake man, 32, was arrested March 25 at the Fairfield Inn in the 1100 block of County Road E on a felony White Bear Lake warrant after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a warrant service attempt.

• A Vadnais Heights woman reported items were stolen from her vehicle March 26 while it was parked in the Sucker Lake South lot on County Road F. Two charges were made on a credit card.

• A suspicious person was reported at 3:14 a.m.

March 27 for lurking behind car dealerships in the 3400 block of Highway 61. Several property items were recovered.

• A Minneapolis woman, 52, was cited March 27 at the Vadnais Heights Target for misdemeanor shoplifting before being "trespassed" from the store and released.

• Two St. Paul men, 35 and 37, were arrested March 28 in the 800 block of County Road D for fraud after one of them tried to steal an already stolen vehicle by writing a check drawn on a closed account to buy the vehicle. Deputies were called to a dispute in a parking lot between the car thief and the thief who was trying to buy it with a fake check.

White Bear Township • A surveillance camera was reported damaged March 20 at Aspect LED in the 4900 block of Constellation Drive after deputies received a report of a camera broken off the side of a building.

• A Forest Lake man, 33, reported a suspicious fi re to his vehicle March 24 in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive, sparking an active arson investigation.

• Two credit cards belonging to a Minneapolis woman were reported found March 27 in the 4600 block of Weston Wood Way. The cards were traced to a Jan. 4 theft from auto report out of New Brighton.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Grant • A resident in the 9000 block of Justen Trail N. on March 15 reported her mailbox damaged.

Birchwood • A resident of Wildwood Avenue on March 18 reported her brother for scamming her by using the same method as used by strangers. The scamming brother requested the complainant buy $300 in Apple gift cards and email the numbers back to him. Ever since the complainant did so, she has not been able to contact her brother. Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies advised the complainant to contact her credit card company to stop the charges. The complainant had already stopped the Apple charges.

Mahtomedi • A resident of Hyde Avenue N. on March 15 reported possible possession of counterfeit money.

• A resident on Hickory Street on March 16 reported that a male had come to the front door and smashed a decorative pot on the sidewalk.

• A resident on Glenmar Avenue on March 18 reported that when she attempted to fi le her income tax return, it kicked back to her as having already been fi led. The complainant then noticed that numerous accounts had been opened using her name. She also found malware on her phone running in the background.

• The manager of the Holiday station on Stillwater Road on March 19 reported three juveniles for shoplifting some $10 in candy.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they could not locate anyone fitting the description of the shoplifters, so the youths escaped.

• A resident on Wildwood Road reported items were taken from a vehicle overnight March 19-20 after the vehicle was broken into.

• A resident on Grove Street on March 20 reported that he thought he may have been scammed.

Pine Springs • A Minnesota driver was cited March 19 on eastbound Highway 36 for speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.

• A Minnesota driver was cited by deputies on stationary patrol

March 20 on I-694 for speeding 74 mph in a 55 mph zone. The vehicle pulled over before deputies could activate their emergency lights. The driver's attitude was described as good.

• An unidentified driver was arrested on a warrant at 10:13 p.m. March 20 on eastbound Highway 36 at the northbound ramp to I-694 after deputies conducted a random computer check. The driver was also cited for driving after revocation.

Willernie • A resident on Chippenham Lane at 11:35 p.m. March 19 reported hearing unexplained noises and lights turning on in the residence while they were home. While deputies were clearing the residence, they noticed that power was out in one bedroom and on everywhere else.

• A resident in the 4900 block of Stewart Avenue reported harassment via unsolicited Amazon Prime deliveries March 26.

• A resident in the 2500 block of Sumac Circle reported that a person who fraudulently identified themselves as an insurance representative over the phone requested personal information March 26.

• Loud noise coming from vehicles was reported March 26 in the 3500 block of Oak Terrace.

• Counterfeit currency was passed in the 4500 block of Centerville Road March 26.

• Officers responded to an animal complaint in the 4900 block of Highway 61 March 27; the dog was found and returned to its owner.

Ramsey County Sheriff helping with community needs The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has formed a COVID-19 “Help Team.” The Help Team will assist those in the community who are most at risk and vulnerable and who require assistance or support for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Help Team is made up of 15 deputy and civilian employees who will respond to needs that are not typically seen as police calls for service. Some functions include the pickup and delivery of prescription medication, and prepaid food and groceries; delivery of food, medication and other essentials that have been donated; coordination of the collection of donated items based on current community needs; and provision of referrals including social services, financial assistance, medical assistance, mental health help, and others.

People will be able to call, text or email for assistance from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local runners react to Weekly Outlook Grandma’s Marathon cancellation

Grandma’s Marathon, which always draws dozens of local runners, has been canceled, another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What would have been the 44th annual weekend of events, including a half-marathon, was scheduled for June 19-20 in Duluth. “Grandma's is such an iconic race, it's unfortunate it won't be held, but these are the times we are in right now,� said Wayne Kazmierczak, White Bear Lake superintendent. “There was really no other decision that could have been made as we deal with this pandemic.�

Kazmierczak, who estimates that he’s run Grandma’s Marathon six times and the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon four times, said big races like this on the calendar are “very motivational. It helps to have a goal.�

Margaret (Landberg) Ludick, White Bear Lake native who qualified for the US Olympic trials this year, has run the half-marathon at Duluth three times. She says it’s a “magic in the air� experience. “The half marathon starts around 6 a.m. and — picture this — you're at the starting line, the sun is just beginning to break the horizon, the fog is lifting off of Lake Superior and the scent of pine needles fill you,� said Ludick, of Roseville. “It is really the most beautiful thing! Plus they always build a competitive field and it is a wicked fast course. I am super bummed they cancelled, but totally understand what they had to do.�

Runners will continue to run, said Kazmierczak. “Races will return at some point, so in the meantime, runners will continue to train as a way to help with the stress of what we are all going through.�

SCHOOL BRIEFS Free Bear Care Health & Wellness Clinic The White Bear Lake Area Schools is partnering with St. Catherine University’s nursing department to provide students with free health assessments and treatment.

Services available to all district students birth through age 21 include: health assessments and physical exams, strep throat test and treatment, eye and ear infection checks and treatment, mental health support and referrals, health education, teen health, nutrition counseling, chronic illness management and referrals, and family health support.

Clinic providers are not able to test for COVID-19.

2020 ice-out date ties with 1928

Now you see it, now you don't. That's how quickly the ice went out, said official recordkeeper Jan Holtz Kraemer, aka the “ice lady.”

The longtime ice-out historian declared White Bear Lake 100% open Thursday afternoon, April 2. "It was amazing how fast it went," said Kraemer, who that morning spotted "quite a bit of ice" in Mahtomedi bay during her rounds. Two things factored into the disappearing act: wind and overnight temperatures that didn't get below freezing.

The date is almost two weeks shy of average ice-out, which is now April 14 instead of April 15, according to Kraemer. The ice historian said the DNR calculated

the earlier date, blaming "global warming."

Kraemer called the Press last Thursday from her observation post at Kay Beach in Birchwood to make the announcement. She then called Benny's Barbershop owner Earl Poyerd. His downtown shop is closed of course, due to COVID-19, so she couldn't break the news on location as usual. She has a lengthy list of contacts who track the date and faithfully calls each one, including a University of Buffalo professor who has requested freezing and thawing dates since 1999, the DNR, U.S. Geological Survey and the White Bear Lake Conservation District. She used to call radio personality Joe Soucheray when he had his afternoon show; he'd put her live on the air to declare ice-out.

2001when she took over duties from barber Benny Schmalzbauer. History buffs may be interested in knowing March 16, 2016 was the earliest date for ice-out and May 4, the latest. That happened twice, in 1950 and 2018. This year's date, April 2, has also been recorded before — in 1928, the year Schmalzbauer started keeping records.

Ice-out is declared when the lake is fully navigable from shore to shore.

More people than usual seemed interested in the status of the ice this year, Kraemer remarked. She thinks it's the coronavirus scare. "People are looking for positive, good news during this public health crisis," noted the ice lady.

The area food shelf will also benefit in an unofficial way. Every year, the extended Holtz family bets a buck on the ice-out date. If no one wins, the pool of money goes to the White Bear Area Emergency Food Shelf. "Three people bet April 3, so the food shelf wins," Kraemer said. "Of course, everyone was going to give the money to the food shelf anyway."

Coincidentally, Bald Eagle Lake and Lake Minnetonka were also declared ice-free April 2.

COVID-19: ‘Wrong place at wrong time’ FROM PAGE 1

“A second article talked about a group of affluent Mexican businessmen who took the virus back to Mexico from Vail. Apparently, there was a group of Italians in Vail for the Burton World Snowboard Championships who could have been in the bar that evening and may have spread it.”

Bartz said the Minnesota Department of Health confirmed that Vail was a “hot spot” when he was there. “Considering the timing, I think it’s highly probable that the bar was ground zero,” he said.

A second Rotarian with him that night also tested positive but recovered after self-quarantine. The other club members on the ski trip did not get sick.

Bartz calls the ordeal “a perfect storm.”

Twice he’s been hospitalized for COVID-19-related illness. After coughing up blood March 13, he contacted his Mayo cardiologist, who referred him to infectious disease physicians. They recommended he come to Rochester.

“I drove myself down and managed to gain safe entry into St. Mary’s hospital as a COVID-19 patient — their first at that time. I was put on IV antibiotics for a couple days (for suspected bacterial pneumonia) and released. Staff was surprised I drove myself there, but I had to remind them I was in isolation and calling an Uber wasn’t an option.”

He called the frontline health care workers “true heroes.”

Finally, his fever broke March 17 after 12 consecutive days. “I thought I was making progress to recovery,” Bartz said. “I had my eye on March 25, the last day Sandy and I would be quarantined for the required 14 days. I didn’t make it to the 25th.”

It should be noted that Greg’s wife Sandy never showed symptoms and has not been tested. They agreed to keep a social distance in isolation, which “proved interesting in our household.” In addition to separate bedrooms and bathrooms, they watched separate TVs and used different areas of the house.

His second trip to the hospital came a few days after some bothersome secondary issues, which Bartz said were COVID-related. Around March 20, he noticed pressure and soreness in his right lower leg. He figured it was due to lack of exercise.

Keep in mind, this is a guy who worked out at the Y four to five days a week. He also had a sharp pain in his chest that started after an attack of coughing. He thought it was a pulled muscle.

“Unfortunately, with our isolation I wasn’t able to go to Urgent Care or a clinic to get it checked out,” Bartz pointed out. “Turns out these were a precursor to a bigger problem.”

On March 22, he was short of breath after walking a few steps. Hours later a sudden and violent coughing attack left him gasping for air and hyperventilating. Sandy called 911. White Bear EMTs found his blood oxygen level was low and put him in the ambulance.

“I left the house that evening not knowing if I would be coming back,” Bartz said. “The worst part was I couldn’t even give Sandy a hug on the way out the door. We had to keep that 6-foot buffer.”

Bartz was admitted to Regions Hospital as a positive COVID-19 patient in respiratory distress.

He was put in isolation but not intensive care.

Emergency physicians found he had a pulmonary embolism in his lungs, or PE. The source of the PE was determined to be deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, which explained the pain in his leg. “That was the source of the blood clots creating havoc in my lungs,” he said.

Bartz remained hospitalized on oxygen and blood thinners until March 26. Ironically, he said a second COVID-19 test during his stay came back negative. “That meant the virus is no longer active in my body,” he said. “Great news.”

Whether there is permanent damage to his lungs, time will tell.

The ordeal has been “life changing,” says Bartz, who chalks it up to “bad timing” regarding his heart medication and travel schedule. He’d been on 10 airplanes in five weeks for work and play prior to getting sick.

One of his biggest concerns now is whether he’s immune to the virus. Mayo Clinic is working on an antibody test to help answer that question, but it’s not yet available. Bartz is hoping to get the test. “If I get COVID-19 again, it won’t be pretty,” he maintained. “I don’t know if I could handle a second bout.”

As everyone knows, there are many unanswered questions about the disease.

For example, when are people contagious? “If I was exposed Feb. 25, was I contagious right away?

There are many things we don’t know,” Bartz said.

And why were three other Rotarians at the bar Feb. 25 exposed but asymptomatic? Did they beat the disease without knowing it?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says asymptomatic individuals with COVID-19 or those who eventually develop symptoms (pre-symptomatic) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.

In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends people use cloth face coverings (not surgical or N95 masks, which are reserved for health care workers) in public settings, especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

Bartz hopes his story helps people understand the seriousness of coronavirus, particularly for those with underlying conditions.

“It’s important for people to keep their distance and follow the CDC guidelines,” he reminded.

“There is so much we don’t know. I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I was susceptible. It was bad luck. At the same time, I’m fortunate to have recovered.”

MINNESOTA COVID-19 CASES Total of 986 lab-confirmed cases in Minnesota of 28,128 tested as of April 6.

• 30 reported deaths; average age is 84 with the age range of the deceased being 58 to 100.

• Since the start of the outbreak, 223 patients in Minnesota have been hospitalized.

• 115 patients are currently hospitalized, up from 86 on Friday, with 57 in the ICU; the rest are recovering at home.

On Saturday (April 4) the Department of Health released a list of 32 nursing homes with at least one confirmed case of COVID-19. Locally, the only facilities on that list as of press time are The Waters of White Bear Lake and The Encore at Mahtomedi.

Only facilities with 10 or more residents are listed.

We are the same church community as we were before. We just have to go about things in a little bit of a different way now.”

As a spiritual community we have unseen resources and we need to remember to tap into those at this time.”

If the weather cooperates on Easter Sunday, Hope Christian Church in Shoreview hopes to celebrate outdoors.

“We are exploring the idea of doing the service in our parking lot—setting up our sound system in front of the church and just having people drive in, park, roll down the windows and do an Easter service in that fashion, ” said Senior Pastor Trent Johnson.

However, given the unpredictable nature of early spring in Minnesota, the church also has a back-up plan.

“Recognizing that on April 12, there certainly will be few, if any, guarantees of warmth or sunshine or anything that would be amenable to that sort of service – if we’re not able to do the parking lot service, we will do what we’ve been doing in recent weeks and just live stream our service on Facebook, (and) post it to our website,” Johnson said.

Johnson also said that the church is considering ordering materials from Illustrated Ministries, which has an array of Biblical-themed coloring posters.

“They provide all sorts of hands-on, very, very highly-detailed posters for kids and adults that you’re able to color in and make beautiful mosaic type artwork,” he said. “We may be forwarding those to our people so they can do that sort of thing at home and then share their artwork online with each other.”

March 15 was Hope Christian’s last in-person service. Since then, it has relied on Facebook Live to stream its Sunday morning worship. Such technology, Johnson said, has allowed the church to broaden its reach, even while congregants cannot be physically together.

“We’ve had a lot of interaction (and) a lot of participation not only from our congregation but from the immediate community and beyond. We’ve had people tune in to the live stream from all across the country and even in international locations,” he said. “We’ve been able to touch some people with our worship and our time and the word that we wouldn’t normally be impacting.”

Members are staying connected to one another in between Sundays, too.

“We’ve been very intentional in emphasizing again and again to the congregation that they need to be proactive as well and reaching out to one another,” Johnson said. “Whether by phone, by various social media means, just to try to keep those connections of fellowship open, as well as just checking up on one another and seeing how we’re doing in terms of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.”

That sense of connection, Johnson said, can sustain people, even if it comes virtually.

“People need as much as contact as they can get these days in whatever means they can find it,” he said. “We’re doing what we can do to try and keep people connected. It’s not the same, but it’s the best we can do under the circumstances.”

A lethal pandemic, floods, fires, tornadoes—all rivet our attention to life itself ... as it happens. Thinking about life is a good place to start. Life in the galaxy, life on earth, life in our country, our state, our town, our family, life in our skin. There is a place in our heads for these concentric circles of life. Our perspectives on our place on all these levels are the things we live with.

It’s helpful to me to recognize the principles, morals and beliefs that run through one level to the next.

The aspirations I want us to think of are those truths that our country claims are self-evident, that we are equals, with the equal right to “secure life,” “liberty” and “the pursuit of happiness.” Easier said than done.

There is a built-in logic to these rights that we should not allow ourselves to ignore. “Secure life” is primary, for without that there is no agency of liberty or dream of happiness. This structure informs us that when these rights are in conflict, life prevails. I cannot exercise my liberty in a manner that endangers your

lif I cannot exercise i my lib k happiness h i i a life. liberty to seek in manner that infringes on your liberty.

Another truth that is self-evident is that there are things in our world that are “organic” and those that are “artificial,” man-made. A virus is organic, a war is artificial. Poison ivy is organic, battery acid is artificial. The threats and irritations equally effect our “secure lives.” We learn to live with the organic, but the artificial threats we should learn to live without.

So take 20 seconds from time to time to think about how to settle our differences without war. Twenty seconds to think about a life that works for your pals and your planet.

Our Founders brought us the Enlightenment. The Empowerment is what we owe them as we bring these truths to life.

Social distancing doesn’t keep school board away

The White Bear Lake School Board meeting took place on March 23 via Google Hangouts so board members could maintain social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak was in the community room at the district center during the meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to approve a resolution to hold meetings via teleconference or by other electronic means. An update was also provided on school closures and distance learning plan development.

At the time of the meeting, it was not yet determined whether schools would go back into session or proceed with distance learning. However, Gov. Tim Walz announced March 25 that all schools in Minnesota would engage in distance learning starting March 30 through at least May 4.

Board members provided an update on the areas they’ve been working on to prepare for distance learning.

Marissa Vette, director of communications and community relations, said, “I just can’t even begin to tell you how fortunate we are to have such great people in this district, not only leading at the district level but to teachers that just have got their most creative ideas forward to create the best conditions for students and families.”

She said that the Minnesota Department of Education provided guidance that aligned well with the district’s strategic plan and its equity decision-making protocol, which was an affirming first step.

“We were all aligned together in making sure that we were thinking about respect and dignity of everyone involved,” Vette said.

She also said staff members have been

working with elementary principals and looked at what a teacher’s day looks like in terms of their availability and what attendance should look like. They are also mindful of what the teaching experience will look like.

On the elementary side, the concept is that each teacher team is working with technology to create a learning board relevant to their students’ grade level.

Vette said they don’t want to be tempted by the many free applications; rather, staff would prefer to try to see what it looks like from a family’s perspective and how much students will be asked to log into different sites. On the elementary side, staff members have predominantly used Seesaw and Google to keep instruction consistent for families. They are also looking at how to incorporate printed materials.

“All in all, we really feel like we have a good framework that was laid out that gives teachers the ability to run with it,” Vette said.

White Bear Lake Area High School Principal Alison Gillespie said, “Secondary has also talked about lesson structure and how students can check in with teachers.

“We’ve had a lot of amazing conversations around equity and how we make sure that all of our students are feeling success and that we don’t have students falling through the cracks,” she noted.

Lisa Ouren, director of student support services, spoke of the district’s recent partnership with St. Catherine’s University. She shared that they would be opening Bear Care Health and Wellness Center, which will serve students ages birth to 21 to meet their basic care needs free of charge.

“We’re hoping that within the next week that we’re going to be able to add a mental health component to it,” Ouren said.

The wellness center will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m.

From 2 to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays., a telehealth clinic will be offered.

Kazmierczak said they were planning on opening and running the center this summer; however, due to current circumstances, the clinic has opened a few months earlier than anticipated.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Tim Wald shared that meals are being distributed to families who need it, per the governor’s orders.

There are several ways that students can access meals.

“There’s a form that we ask them to fill out just to reserve their meal so we know how many to prepare. It doesn’t ask them to identify themselves in the request form,” Wald said.

Curbside pickup is available for breakfast and lunch at Birch Lake, Oneka and Willow Lane elementary schools. Families can pick up two breakfasts and two lunches for each child on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The district has also set up 11 neighborhood pickup sites. Bus drivers are working with school cooks. The meals are delivered from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Families can pick up meals at any of those locations if transportation to the three elementary schools is a challenge.

Wald said district social workers have also been in contact with the White Bear Lake Area Emergency Food Shelf. There are weekend packs families can pick up as well.

Tim Mauer, director of community services, said as part of the governor’s order the district has been asked to provide child care for children of emergency responders and health care workers, termed Tier One employees.

The program was rolled out several weeks ago at three sites and has had just under 300 submissions of forms sent out districtwide. It is currently serving up to 80 students. Mauer said staff members are working on opening up a child care program for tier two employees.

Director of Technology and Innovation Steve Asper said the technology department has been working diligently on instructional tools and platforms that teachers are using, including tools like Google Meet, which puts their infrastructure to the test.

The district is also making sure teachers and students have the hardware they need to connect.

“We did a calling survey to connect every student with a phone call to make sure they’re doing well. It was also a time where we could gather some critical information around technology needs and some other health and wellness needs,” Asper said.

At the time of the meeting, Asper said staff had already connected with 4,700 students directly. From those calls, the district knows there are internet needs for 150 students, but that number is expected to go up some. The district also procured 250 WiFi hotspots.

Vette advised families to check the district website, as it is updated regularly. A page is set aside just for COVID-19 updates, and is available in Spanish.

“We are doing a daily email out to our families and sending that to staff as well,” she said.

The district is sharing whatever information it has with families on a daily basis.

“It’s pretty amazing, the amount of work that’s happened in the last few days,” said Kazmierczak.

needed to hit the scale required. McGurran said that MGC is well-connected with other medical device companies in the area, including the Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center, to help take the project from crude prototype to working design.

McGurran said that the devices are to be used in a clinical hospital setting, either traditional or emergency.

He noted that the design using Ambu-style bags is something that can be used around the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a profit-seeking opportunity. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a compassionate project,â&#x20AC;? he said. The designs will also be shared online at no charge.

McGurran provided a link to a video documenting the project where Richardson expresses the urgency of the situation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This allows those patients who would otherwise not have an opportunity to survive, to survive. It gives people a chance,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The next major hurdle for the project is an emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first formal FDA application will be in a matter of days, not weeks,â&#x20AC;? McGurran said.

What started as a brainstorming conversation between lifelong friends could possibly result in a lifesaving medical device that is used around the world.

In mid-March, Jim McGurran, the director of product development at Vadnais Heights-based MGC Diagnostics, received a call from his friend Dr. Steve Richardson, a cardiac anesthesiologist at the University of Minnesota. Richardson had been thinking about possible ways to help with the life-or-death situation of not having available ventilators as the number of COVID-19 patients requiring treatment increases.

According to McGurran, a low-resource option using hand-operated â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ambuâ&#x20AC;? bags was decided upon. Ambu bags are a readily available tool used by paramedics to resuscitate patients manually. Richardson asked McGurran if he could make a prototype. After consulting with his engineers, he was able to respond within a day with a basic prototype that was successfully tested. The first prototype device, constructed using available parts, is essentially an electric motor that turns a crank that pushes a piston up and down, which pushes on the Ambu bag. A second prototype was designed and was also successfully tested, leading to the conclusion that more partners were
