WHITE BEAR LAKE — Upset that a downtown bus station would take precious parking spaces, the owners of Beartown Bar & Grill are working on a compromise with the powers that be. The corner of Seventh Street and Washington Avenue behind the restaurant was selected by the Rush Line Policy Advisory Committee as the preferred site for a downtown platform. It's the last stop along the 14-mile route from St. Paul before the bus turns around and heads back to Union Depot. There are five bus stops planned along the Highway 61 corridor in the Press coverage area: Buerkle Road, County Road E, Cedar Avenue, Whitaker Street and downtown. Beartown's Joe Claussen, who owns the restaurant with his mother, Sandra, said the original station proposal would be detrimental to his business. “We would lose up to 25 parking spots,” Claussen maintained. “Why would they do this to a business that has been a fixture in White Bear Lake for 20 years?” It wasn't just the parking that bugs Claussen. Tight quarters in that parking lot would make it tough to maneuver SEE STATION, PAGE 9A
Meal a day helps keep seniors in their home BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
Between 11 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday, 170 area seniors receive a friendly knock on the door. It's their Meals on Wheels volunteer delivering a well-balanced lunch. The White Bear Lake Area Meals on Wheels is a community-based service that provides fresh, nutritious meals delivered directly to homes of seniors and individuals with disabilities throughout the area school district and nearby Mahtomedi neighborhoods. One of those seniors, Earline Lemon, has lived in White Bear Lake since she was 13. She loves the community, she loves her downtown apartment in Pi-

oneer Manor and she loves the meal service because it helps make it possible for her to live independently. “A lot of people need this service,” Lemon said. “Many seniors here don't drive. Some are in wheelchairs and not mobile. It's a blessing. I can stay in my apartment because I have food delivered. That's what it's all about. Helping people stay at home.” And the food is good, Lemon added. “You always get your basics, dessert and a beverage, and they have special diets for people with renal disease or diabetes.” Then there's the social connection. “People check on you — so you have someone who worries about you every day,” Lemon pointed out.
