April hammers bring new houses

The Holy Hammers, a group of volunteers from northeast metro churches, has been pounding hammers for Habitat for Humanity for 20 years.

Volunteers started this year's 10-week project on Whitall Street in St. Paul last month despite the April snowfall.

The Holy Hammers started 20 years ago with volunteers from several churches. It now includes 15 churches in Shoreview, White Bear Lake, Circle Pines, Roseville, Falcon Heights and New Brighton. Volunteers come together and work on one house per year, said Jerry Peterson, a Shoreview resident and member of New Life Presbyterian in Roseville. About

750 volunteers from the churches work for 10 weeks, according to Habitat for Humanity. Holy Hammers has built 23 complete homes and parts of 10 others.

The churches also donate funds to help build the houses; they've raised $1.5 million over 20 years. This year, the group raised $75,000, Peterson said.

They are building a twin home and will come close to finishing by mid-June, said Shoreview resident Ron Kuhn, a member at St. Michael’s Lutheran in Roseville. Volunteers do the carpentry; electrical and plumbing are done by professionals, Peterson said. PaddleTap offers human-powered booze cruises

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The human-powered party bikes known as pedal pubs are a familiar sight on the streets of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. This summer, one local company will take that idea and add water, offering 90-minute booze cruises of White Bear Lake.

The PaddleTap, as it has been christened, is the brainchild of Ryan Jaeger, who launched the water-based bar in Lake Minnetonka four years ago. The idea behind it, he said, is simple: like many a Minnesotan, Jaeger

enjoys spending summer days lakeside, preferably with an adult beverage (or two) in hand.

When the inspiration for PaddleTap struck, that's exactly where he was.

“A bunch of college friends and I were together on a lake, and we thought about starting up a movable bar on the water,” Jaeger said. “It basically all just evolved from there.”

With his vision of a floating bar in mind, Jaeger contacted a local pedal pub manufacturer for help in making his idea a reality. That manufacturer referred him to an Oregon-based company that was already making such contraptions. The

model, Jaeger said, was “exactly what I had in mind.”

Jaeger now owns four such boats, which are essentially pontoons with two inward-facing rows of seats that fit up to 18 people. As riders sit and sip, they can also move their legs to operate the pedals beneath them, which propels the paddle in the back as a captain steers. The pedaling motion, Jaeger said, is minimal and nonstrenuous, but boats are always equipped with motors “just in case people get tired along the way.”

Since its inception four years ago, PaddleTap has been available for tours of Lake Minnetonka, but Jaeger and his business

partner, Wells Brose, are expanding to White Bear Lake for their fifth season. Brose said the move is in response to repeated requests to move eastward.

“We always hear, ‘come to White Bear; come to White Bear,’ so we're testing out the waters this summer,” Brose said. “We're excited to be on the other side of the cities on another popular body of water.”

PaddleTap's geographic expansion comes alongside other growth. Last year, Jaeger and Brose bought two other companies, Amsterdam Pedals and Hoppy Trolley, and combined them with PaddleTap to form UffDa Adventures. Jaeger

said the acquisitions and new company will help streamline offerings and, hopefully, attract more clients.

“We can now do brewery tours by bus or by pedal pub, so if people come out and want to do that, we can make that happen,” he said.

But at least for now, the PaddleTap will be the only available option in White Bear Lake.

Tours last 90 minutes and cost $449 on Fridays and Saturdays and $399 on Sundays. Alcohol is not provided; PaddleTap-goers must bring their own beverages.

BUSINESS BRIEF Mother-daughter duo open nutrition store A mother-daughter team opened Bear Nutrition last month in Birch Lake Square, 1350 Hwy. 96E. LeeAnna Stinar said it was her 16-year-old daughter Skylar Lamminen's idea to open a nutrition store in White Bear Lake.

“When Skylar started playing high school softball, we saw a huge change in her eating habits,” her mom said. “Coaches are educating the girls on the importance of a good diet. Then she started working at a nutrition store in Blaine, and convinced me White Bear needed one, too.”

The duo “pounded the pavement” looking for space, asked a lot of questions, and ended up in the strip mall by Carbone's six months later. It so happened the location was a smoothie shop about five years ago, so the renovation was seamless.

Skylar has the Saturday shift, handles social media and is responsible for creating the recipes. Her mom works weekdays in the store. They serve 84 flavors of healthy protein shakes or smoothies that start at 24 grams of protein and 200 calories. The shakes are a full meal replacement or a supplement before or after a workout. They also have metabolism-boosting teas, according to Stinar. A shot of aloe is added to the teas to help digestion. They have other protein products, too, that offer athletes healthy options. “Shakes are gaining traction,” Stinar said.

“People are seeking an alternative to a drive-thru.”

Working alongside her daughter in their first business venture has been an eye-opener for Stinar. “For me, having the opportunity to watch Skylar develop and take on things that most 16-year-olds wouldn't think about, makes me very proud.

“She told my husband (Josh) last weekend that in two years, I can find a new location and she'll take this one over. She was halfway kidding, but it was cute.”

y all-time favorite children’s author is the late Bill Peet. He wrote great books with memorable themes like “Zella, Zack and Zodiac,” and “Chester the Worldly Pig,” and was one of Walt Disney’s top illustrators/ writers. His name is credited on the immortal movie “Dumbo,” among other Disney classics. Another Peet gem is “The Wump World.” It’s a story about herbivorous creatures called Wumps that are driven underground when aliens, aptly called Pollutians, invade their tiny planet.

The Wumps are forced to leave their lush, green environment to Feeling subsist on fungus, or whatever else they can find growing in caves Inspired below the surface, while the new Debra Neutkens inhabitants cover just about every square inch of their beautiful world with concrete and trash.

When the Pollutians have exhausted a world’s resources, they send a scouting party into the universe to find a new planet to conquer. In keeping with their method operandi, the invaders eventually leave and the fearful Wumps return to the surface to find their green world a vast sea of highways, skyscrapers and heaps of garbage. And then, a miracle. A crack in the concrete allows a tiny seedling to erupt and the joyful Wumps have hope for the future.

I think about that poignant story, written in 1970 by the insightful Peet, when I see another big box store bite the dust, or a drug store close its doors when a competitor moves across the street, or one more strip mall, office condo or manufacturing plant sit vacant and decaying on what was once green space. It seems no patch of land can escape someone’s need to cover it with concrete.

I thought about Peet’s story last week when I received an April 29 press release announcing the world population clock at the Loro Parque Foundation in the Canary Islands reached the historic figure of 7.7 billion people. Based on estimates by the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs, noted the foundation, there will be more than 8 billion people by 2023.

The report then pointed out the obvious — that more human inhabitants on this planet will lead to more resource depletion, more endangered species, more deforestation and more pollution.

That story was followed by a report last week, also citing a United Nations study, that says humans are causing extinction at a rate never before seen in history. It is by sheer coincidence that this week’s political cartoonist also picked up on that alarming prediction. The 1500-page report estimates that more than one million species are at imminent risk for extinction.

I will blame it partly on plastic. It was heartbreaking to see news clips of a dead whale found with 90 pounds of plastic in its stomach and who can forget the viral photograph of a tiny seahorse clutching a plastic Q-tip in the Pacific. The photo was a finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition from the Natural History Museum in London.

Climate change and deforestation, extinctions and mountains of garbage are big, big problems. I certainly don’t have the answers. I’m not trying to be a Debby downer; I just hope everyone does their part in some small way to protect the planet. Please repurpose and recycle.

Let’s not end up like Wumps hoping for a miracle.

The state of Lyme disease in Minnesota

hen it comes to tick-related illness in Minnesota, the numbers aren’t in our favor.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Minnesota is at the epicenter of tick-related illness with the seventhhighest tally in the country of 26,886 confirmed cases of tick-borne infections between 2004 and 2016.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 1,408 confirmed Lyme disease cases in our state in 2017. There were an additional 910 probable cases or physician-diagnosed that did not Movers & cases meet criteria for Shakers confirmed cases but had laboratory Carolyn McClain evidence of infection.

Here are other important facts about Lyme disease in Minnesota: • Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick. It is important to educate yourself on the appearance of this specific tick. It looks very different than the common wood tick • The blacklegged ticks that spreads Lyme disease are smaller than a pinhead –less than one millimeter, or 0.04 inch. Yes, that is 4/100 of an inch.

• The infected tick must be attached for at least 24-48 hours to transmit the bacteria. The chances of getting Lyme disease increase the longer the tick is attached.

• Months after the onset of the illness, symptoms can become serious and include: multiple rashes, paralysis on one side of the face, heart palpitations, arthritis and severe fatigue.

• The signs of Lyme disease are different for everyone, but the most common complaint is “flulike” symptoms. Early signs and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes — all common in the flu. In up to 80% of Lyme infections, a rash is one of the first symptoms. Lyme disease causes a very characteristic bull’s eye rash. The presence of this rash is enough for the diagnosis of Lyme disease.

• Early diagnosis of Lyme disease can make all the difference by reducing the severity of the disease.

• Lyme disease is diagnosed through a physical examination and blood test.

• Blood tests may be negative within the first 2-3 weeks of illness. A blood test is not required for diagnosis of early Lyme disease when the characteristic rash is present. The blood test is an important part of diagnosis for patients who have been ill for more than one month.

• Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics.

• Antibiotics are very effective in killing the bacteria. Treatment is most effective early in the course of Lyme disease. Lyme disease detected later is also treatable with antibiotics but can cause symptoms that may take longer to go away,

even after the antibiotics have killed the Lyme disease bacteria.

• Prevention of Lyme disease includes staying away from tick-infested areas such as long grasses, brush, stumps, fallen logs and the leaf litter under trees. When in these areas check yourself often for ticks.

Remember, a tick must be attached for greater than 24 hours to spread disease.

• Wear light colored clothing and tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

• Use bug spray with DEET. • Always do a thorough tick check after being outside.

• Protect your pets. Use flea and tick preventative on your pets as they can carry ticks indoors and onto furniture and beds.

If you do find a tick on yourself, remove it promptly following these steps: • If possible, use a pair of tweezers to grasp the tick by the head. ° Grasp the tick close to the skin ° Pull the tick outward slowly, gently and steadily ° Do not squeeze the tick ° Use an antiseptic on the bite.

Avoid folk remedies like Vaseline, nail polish remover or burning matches — they are not a safe or effective way to remove ticks. Consult your doctor or head to the UR if you are having trouble removing the tick or if you are noticing any abnormal signs and symptoms after the bite.

ou have probably heard the terms probation and parole. Both the news and entertainment media tend to use the terms interchangeably. While they are similar in many ways, they are actually different concepts under the law.

To better understand the word “probation,” it is helpful to know that it comes from the same root word as does the word probate. Probate court, is a place where a Will is proved or tested to ensure that it is what it purports to be.

Similarly, in criminal court, probation means a period of “test or trial.”

Whenever a probationary term exists, it is a period of time to see how something will work before something else may happen.

For example, you may have started a new job and been placed on probation. This was to test what type of employee you would be before extending you a full offer of employment. It was a test period where

you had to prove yourself.

Similarly, in Minnesota, a person convicted of a crime could be placed on probation instead of being sent to jail or prison to test if they can follow specified rules. The Movers & person must prove that they can be trusted and Shakers will not get into trouble.

The word parole comes from a different starting point. Parole means a pledge or promise.

It comes from a Latin (and later French) term used for prisoners of war who, in exchange for increased liberty, pledged not to escape or to take up arms against the country that had captured them.

In today’s world, the word refers to

the promise given by a convicted felon to be of good behavior if released early from prison and restored, at least partly, to liberty. Parole applies to a time period after someone has already been convicted and was serving time in prison. A person is paroled when given an early release from prison. That release is conditioned on the person’s promise, or pledge, that they will follow the rules of society and will not get into trouble.

Probation and parole sometimes get mixed up because their terms of compliance can be very similar. Terms could include: keeping a job, going to school, remaining law abiding, staying away from alcohol and drugs, paying restitution, and not associating with certain specified people. Similarly, each is supervised by either a probation officer or a parole officer. Their level of supervision depends on a number of

factors including their personal history and the seriousness of their underlying conviction.

Both probation and parole also only partially restore liberty. Supervising officers, without a warrant, can inspect their homes and demand tests to insure that they are free of illegal substances.

For each group, public policy makers have determined that some folks, who are most likely to follow the rules, should not be incarcerated. This is done to promote those people being productive in society and to save on the costs of incarceration.

Scouts turn basement into rec room Boy Scout Kyle Pade, a member of Mahtomedi Troop 89 and a White Bear Lake junior, wrapped up the final phase of his Eagle Scout project last month. With help from fellow Scouts Liam Dickson and Aiden Scott, Pade renovated the basement of St. Andrew's Family Shelter in Hugo. The Scouts turned the basement into a recreational room by installing flooring, constructing Kyle Pade game tables and bookshelf, upgrading lighting and adding bean bag chairs.

There are five families living at the shelter, with 12 children ranging from infancy to preteen. In order to help with funding for the project, Pade started a Gofundme page, which raised over $1,000 for materials.

Q ti allegiance Question ll i regarding Rush Line As I read Debra Neutkens’ article (“Restaurant owner works to lessen impact of backyard bus station,” May 8, 2019) about the challenges facing the Claussens at the Beartown Bar & Grille as the result of the downtown bus station being planted on their doorstep, I got to thinking (again) about how this whole Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit juggernaut feels so much like it’s been decided by bureaucrats “on behalf” of the citizens of White Bear and forced on us because they think they know best.

As I watched a video of the White Bear City Council debating the bus station location, I couldn’t help but get the impression that Jo Emerson, our illustrious mayor, was somewhat irritated by any type of pushback to the project that would delay progress. Now that we’ve seen that

M E h been b i t d Mayor Emerson has appointed to chair the Rush Line BRT Policy Advisory Committee, it makes me wonder just how much of a conflict of interest this causes for her. She watched Nora Slawik leave her mayoral position in Maplewood to become chairperson of the Metropolitan Council and that makes this citizen wonder where Jo Emerson’s allegiances really are.

I’ll bet some of Maplewood’s residents feel a bit like they’ve been jilted by someone they trusted who has shown herself as having her eye on a bigger prize all along. Once you’re on the Met Council, you don’t have to run for office anymore.

The Claussen’s woes are just the beginning. When the Met Council starts to actually build the five bus stops along Highway 61 that lead to this debacle, residents who travel that route will begin to experience what a clog these buses actually create in the name of “Urban Plan-

But, maybe Jo E Emerson will have earned an appointed position elsewhere in government because she was such a good “team player”.

Let lake fill up Wondering why we allow water to flow strongly out of White Bear Lake on its way to Bald Eagle? The level is still not up to high points at the beaches, why not let it come up until an area or property may flood?

Wetlands on the north side are feeding it strongly, and hopefully the aquifer is back up to the level where it’s feeding via springs, as it used to.

We may have a hot, dry summer and will need the extra buildup. Guess the DNR is in control, so good luck with that.

POLITICAL BRIEF Commissioner Huffman resigns The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners received notice from Commissioner Blake Huffman May 8 that he is resigning from the board effective June 1.

Huffman apparently resigned due to financial issues with his nonprofit affordable housing organization, Journey Home Minnesota. He was accused by the county of conflict of interest.

"On behalf of the Ramsey County Board, we recognize this difficult decision as best for our community, our organization and for Commissioner Huffman and his family,” stated Jim McDonough, board chair.

Blake Huffman was first elected in 2012 to represent District 1 (Arden Hills, Gem Lake, North Oaks, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Township and parts of Mounds View, Spring Lake Park and Blaine) on the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners. He was reelected in 2016.

By law, a special election will be required to fill the office of Ramsey County Commissioner representing District 1 until the current term expires in 2020. At its May 14 meeting, the board planned to vote on appointments to fill committee assignments Commissioner Huffman currently holds and will discuss other business related to the resignation.

Fire Explorers take on spring cleaning The White Bear Lake Fire Explorers spent their most recent drill taking part in the #TrashTag Challenge.

The youth spread out around Goose Lake to clean up trash along the side of the roadway and shoreline. Several bags of garbage later (and some interesting finds), the difference was noticeable.

The Explorers all agreed they saw the value in taking part in the #TrashTag Challenge and plan to do it again in another area of the city at the end of summer. Judging by their motivation and positive attitudes, they're certain to do good things at their State Fair competition this year.

Sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, the Fire Department Explorer Program is designed to provide young men and women with the opportunity to explore a career as a firefighter. Students ages 14-18 meet and train in firefighting, search and rescue, CPR and first aid. Explorers also participate in live fire training and assist the department with emergencies and at the annual Explorers competition at the Minnesota State Fair.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents:

Dellwood • A male was reported to be having a mental health crisis in the 30 block of Evergreen Road at about 11 a.m. May 6. The male spoke with deputies and agreed to go to Regions Hospital for an evaluation.

Grant • During a welfare check in the 10400 block of Dellwood Road about 6:30 p.m. May 3, a deputy discovered that a male on a bicycle had a warrant for his arrest. A citizen had reported the male was riding around on his bike saying he was lost. Deputies found him at his residence. He declined assistance, but once deputies discovered he had a warrant, he was taken to jail.

Mahtomedi • A man was cited for driving without a license near Long Lake Road and Century Avenue about 6:45 p.m. May 1. The man provided his identification, which was from Mexico, and said he did not have a Minnesota or U.S. driver's license. The man had a previous citation for the same issue in April 2018.

• City staff reported about 7:45 a.m.

May 3 that an unknown person placed three counterfeit $100 bills in the city's payment drop box. They were not enclosed in an envelope.

They were placed into the department's evidence.

• A resident in the 3200 block of Century Avenue reported theft of a license plate about 4:45 p.m. May 4. Only the front license plate was stolen, or per-

haps fell off the vehicle. The resident was advised to get new license plates.

• Patio furniture was reported stolen in the 100 block of Hickory Street about 7:45 p.m. May 4. The resident stated two pieces of patio furniture had been stolen. She suspected her roommate had stolen them and claimed he had stolen items from her in the past. The roommate said he did not steal anything from her and said he was moving out June 1.

• An apartment manager in the 800 block of Stillwater Road reported a potential child abuse incident May 6.

A resident reported to the manager that they thought they heard a fight in the second-floor laundry room May 4. The manager pulled video feed from that time and saw an adult female drag a child in the laundry room and throw him on the ground.

The video shows the adult trying to strike the child several times. The manager said the two people do not live in the complex but may have been visiting someone. The woman and child have yet to be identified.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS Due to absence of the public information officer at the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office, there are no incident reports this week.

CORRECTION The motorcyclist involved in the May 3 accident on Highway 96 and Stewart Street called to say he was indeed wearing a helmet, contrary to the State Patrol report, which indicated he was not.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • Overnight May 3, 27 rose bushes were stolen from a merchant in the 4400 block of Highway 61.

• A resident reported being assaulted in the 4600 block of Bald Eagle Avenue May 3.

• A vehicle worth $5,000 was reported stolen in the 1700 block of Buerkle Circle May 3.

• A 37-year-old man was arrested for obstructing the legal process in the 4800 block of Cook Avenue May 3.

• A 20-year-old woman was arrested for fourth-degree DWI near Third Street May 4.

Blood alcohol level was 0.14.

• Binoculars worth $1,500 was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 2200 block of South Shore Boulevard May 4. The unlocked vehicle had been rifled through overnight.

• A shoplifter entered a liquor store located in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road May 4 and stole a bottle of gin. A KOPS Alert was issued to try to stop and identify the occupants of the getaway car.

• Juvenile males were reported for lighting fi res in an entryway in the 1700 block of Fourth Street May 5. When an officer arrived, it was discovered they were burning paper; no fi re remained. Two boys were referred for fi fth degree arson.

• Sometime overnight May 4, someone smashed the front passenger door glass out of a vehicle parked in the 3800 block of Highland Avenue.

• A vehicle was keyed in the 4700 block of Center-

• Burglary and theft was reported in the 1800 block of Roth Street May 5.

• Officers received a call May 5 of a possible impaired driver, who was passed out or sleeping at Floral Drive and Jay Lane. The 57-year-old refused a breath test and was arrested for second-degree DWI test refusal.

• A 54-year-old was arrested for third-degree driving under the influence and fi fth-degree controlled substance possession May 5 after a traffic stop near Highway 96 and South Birch Lake Boulevard.

• Theft of a license plate was reported in the 2200 block of Fourth Street May 6.

• A medic alert bracelet was reported stolen in the 3500 block of McKnight Road May 7.

• A driving complaint near the 3900 block of Hazel Street May 7 led to a citation issued for possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A motorcycle was reported stolen in the 3600 block of Highland Avenue May 7. No suspect information.

Tackling trail concerns through Birchwood The Village of Birchwood City Council and Roads Committee explained their vision May 6 and brainstormed with Lake Links Association members about infrastructure and how to safely route walkers and bikers through Birchwood. The Legislature will soon decide on two bills for funding Lake Links segments around White Bear Lake. One of the requests is for $120,000 to be used in Birchwood.

In other Lake Links news from the Capitol, Sen. Chuck Wiger plans to advocate language asking for almost $1 million for the Lake Links project as part of a potential bonding bill.

Wiger is asking for a $380,000 grant to the city of White Bear Lake for constructing, furnishing and equipping multiuse trails within or generally parallel to and within 200 feet of the Trunk Highway 96 right of way on the north end of White Bear Lake.

The same amount is asked for White Bear Township, which also owns right of way along that stretch of Highway 96.

Bald Eagle one way tabled indefinitely

WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — Wording has to be tweaked, but supervisors agreed to end all discussion about turning Bald Eagle Boulevard into a one way around the lake.

A resolution stating discussion would be suspended was drafted for the May 6 meeting, but the board wanted Town Clerk/Treasurer Pat Christopherson to remove words like “tabled for the time being,” to sound more definitive. The resolution will be brought back for final approval at the May 20 meeting.

Supervisor Steve Ruzek read a statement regarding his position, noting discussion about a one way goes back to 2000. “Former boards have concluded a one way is not feasible,” Ruzek said. “It has been resurrected.

I don’t see it working.”

Bald Eagle Boulevard is owned by the county. If it became a one way, the county has said it will turn the road over to the township after reconstruc-

tion. Ruzek contends the township does not have the funds to maintain the road; among other problems.

“The boulevard is narrow with few access points for emergency vehicles and entry for residents,” Ruzek said.

“A one way creates inconvenience. It is not a candidate for a one way and I’d like to end that discussion.”

The township will continue to advocate for safety, the supervisor stressed, and for a speed limit reduction.

“I am interested to see how the county reconstructs the boulevard north of H2. This will give us a chance to see how narrow lanes work,” added Ruzek. “It could then be considered south of H2. The county could also consider widening the road using easements for a dedicated trail on the lake side with two lanes of traffic.”

Board Chair Ed Prudhon sided with Ruzek, noting he’s not a fan of the one-way proposal.

“Right now, people do a good job sharing the road. The new development north of H2 on Bald Eagle will

be a great example of what can be done. I agree with Steve; I’m tired of talking about it. It would be a hardship to make it one way. But we are not ignoring the safety of this road; far from it.”

Christopherson pointed out a new board can readdress the one-way. The resolution is not binding. “The door is still open to override the resolution in the future,” he reminded supervisors.

The third supervisor, Scott McCune, said he wasn’t as adamant as Ruzek, and believes residents are split 50-50 on converting the boulevard to a one way, but feels other street improvement projects should take priority.

In other business at the May 6 meeting, the board: • Approved the Lake Links Trail Cooperative Grant Modification requesting $2,500 in additional funding to be split 50-50 with White Bear Lake to perform a traffic study at the intersection of Portland and Highway 96.

• Approved paying $6,000 for a property appraisal at 5685 Portland Ave., the Stables of White Bear Township.

• Approved a permit allowing Luther Company to store new Subarus at 2321 Leibel St. • Approved crack sealing proposal in amount of $28,000 from Sealtech, Inc. & Fahrner Asphalt Sealers.

• Approved preparation of plans and specifications for 2019 street improvement in amount not to exceed $59,500. Streets slated for improvement include the Hobe Lane area; Parkview Drive; Fenway Court; Weston Woods Way; Moon Lake Court; White Bear Parkway and Gilfi llan Court. A neighborhood meeting is planned May 28 and a public hearing set for June 4.

• Proclaimed National Police Week May 12-18, 2019. Since 1786, more than 21,000 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty, including four members of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.

Devotion and debate: Rebuilding the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris

Press stringer and Grant resident Shannon Riley happened to be traveling to Paris the day after Notre Dame burned. She was visiting her daughter Olivia Genereux, a 2012 Mahtomedi grad who is working in the French capital for six months and celebrating her wedding anniversary with husband Joe Genereux. This was Riley's report five days after the fire.

The devotion The Île de la Cité in the middle of the Seine River is flooded by solemn onlookers who parade slowly past the northeast side of Notre Dame de Paris through a restricted viewing area. Many raise their hands to their lips subduing tearful sighs.

Notre Dame, our Lady, the treasured icon of Christian faith and historic French Gothic cathedral, still stands nobly but weakened by a disastrous fi re on Monday, April 15. The fi re began accidentally, on the roof where extensive renovation work had begun.

The catastrophic damage to Notre Dame Cathedral felt like a personal injury to Parisians and millions of Catholics and non-Christians who have looked upon this living place of worship as a beacon to all believers.

The City of Light is still in mourning while vowing to rebuild a landmark that, free to tour, welcomes more than 13 million visitors a year. Still a parish church, Notre Dame serves as monument, museum and, commonly, a great stage for national mourning and celebrations.

Construction of Notre Dame began in 1163 and took nearly 200 years.

The structure has withstood the ravages of time, revolution and war. It is owned by the French state and was uninsured due to cost constraints.

No one perished and few were injured in battling the blaze. Praise is being heaped upon the hundreds of valiant fi refighters, the Paris Pompiers, and those who rescued many of the famed artifacts homed in Notre Dame. French government leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and business heads are committed to rebuilding. With shocking speed, $1 billion has already been raised, including hundreds of millions pledged by two of the richest fashion families in France.

The renowned Paris skyline is without Notre Dame’s intricate 315-foot steeple. However, the famed flying buttresses still engage the edge of the vertical walls and singed and crippled scaffolding continues to hover over the collapsed leadsheathed timber roof. The gargoyles, with their stony stares, remain.

French television showed drone footage of the black-and-white tiled nave interior where piles of charred wood covered the floor of the atrium. Hundreds of monuments and religious artifacts remained in the chantries or chapels that surround the apse and altar. Wooden pews were still aligned as if ready for Mass. The marble pieta, the Virgin Mary draped with the body of her son, Jesus, and the golden cross that hangs above it, still prevails. Dozens of candles still burned days after the blaze.

To universal relief, the soaring twin bell towers and many of the intricate stained-glass windows, including the circular rose window, appeared intact, but the lead that connects the glass pieces was jeopardized by the fierce temperatures that rose to more than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Adding insult to injury, the dramatic shift from intense heat to frigid cold from the fi rehoses affects the strength of structural materials like stone and iron. Following an ex-

amination of the cathedral by dozens of engineers and forensic architects, many questions about the structure’s integrity linger.

The debate The challenges of rebuilding Notre Dame are manyfold. True preservationists want decision-makers to commit to retaining as much of the original Gothic-era architecture and 800-year-old construction techniques as possible.

Is it possible to recreate the historic Notre Dame? Or must the restructured cathedral evolve and be rebuilt to withstand threats of fi re, decay, erosion and attack? Wood and lead, or titanium and steel? Will the “new” Notre Dame be constructed with 21st-century technology, fi re retardant materials and futuristic methodology? Or will the fi nal answer be a combination of the two?

The approach to rebuilding Notre Dame will be influenced by the ambitious timeline put forth by Macron, who invoked French pride in resilience, innovation and work ethic. An architectural design competition for the new spire has already been announced.

The five-year time period, which Macron suggests is feasible, would have the restoration complete by the 2024 Summer Olympics, which France will host. Timeline skeptics abound; many say it could take upwards of 30 years for the reconstruction. Notre Dame was originally constructed with hundreds of tons of quarried stone sourced from Normandy and 13,000 oak beams in the ceiling. It would take about 3,000 massive oak trees, which are now more difficult to fi nd, to replace the beams.

Other social and ethical challenges swirl around the rebuilding of Notre Dame, especially in light of the recent Yellow Vest anti-government protests in Paris. The Yellow Vest movement, which began as a voice for economic justice, has spiraled into weekly demonstrations by those condemning perceived social inequality. Demonstrators believe that the French working class has been abandoned by its government. Yellow-vested citizens have headed to affluent Paris enclaves like Montparnasse and along the Avenue des ChampsÉlysées to wage weekly protests against carbon taxes and government

measures to cut pensions.

Many government concessions have already been made in response to Yellow Vest demands, but the rapid pledge of money and government support for Notre Dame’s rebuilding have sparked a new fury over socioethical questions.

Representatives of the press keep vigil and fi lm daily updates from the Pont de la Tournelle. Along the Seine on La Rive Gauche (the Left Bank), tourists lean over the wall craning toward the scarred cathedral. Musicians play liturgical songs and melancholic odes to Our Lady’s spirit and resilience. Onlookers take selfies with quiet faces. The calm is surreal, as if strangers are gathered in prayer.

Tumult and a holy regard for cultural heritage have long been woven into the fabric of French society and are key to its evolution. The country, which has endured many setbacks, reinvents itself. It is likely the French will confront their current challenges with the same pride and perseverance for which they are known. Restoring their beloved Notre Dame de Paris may restore their faith as well.

our porch was the center of family life during warm summers. The entire neighborhood was a playground shared with other kids.”

Growing up in an idyllic environment with its “crafted houses” no doubt helped mold Chapin, who went on to study architecture at the University of Minnesota after graduating in 1972 from White Bear Lake High School. In the excerpt, he goes on to talk about how his town was engulfed by suburbia in the late ’60s and farmland and forests gave way to beige and gray split-level homes that were “appallingly mediocre.” Architecture seemed to be a natural track for Chapin, “perhaps out of my propensity to build huts and treehouses” in the woods behind his house and “a joy of imagining what physical spaces could be like.”

Ten years later, Chapin and his wife Deborah moved to Langley, Washington, a small town on Whidbey Island north of Seattle, where he started his practice. The town has “a distinctive sense of place, not unlike where I grew up.”

Chapin’s list of achievements and accolades as an architect is long. Probably most notable is his conception of “pocket neighborhoods” that emphasize porch-fronted homes around a shared commons. He has written about these homes and their key design principles in numerous national magazines and his work is featured in more than a dozen

Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake has been part of Holy Hammers since it was founded, said church member Craig Carlson, a Vadnais Heights resident. It began with nine churches in 1999. Most of the houses Holy Hammers have built over the years have been in St. Paul and the northeast metro, including Shoreview and White Bear Lake. Christ the King has about a dozen regular volunteers who use hammers but about 15-20 more who put together and bring lunch, coffee and snacks.

Helping homes get built is a tangible and meaningful way to make a difference in the community. “It really addresses the need of affordable housing for families that otherwise wouldn't be able to qualify for a mortgage,” Carlson said.

Fifty to 60 people apply each month to buy a home through Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, said Matt Haugen, communications manager. About half of those are ready financially to begin the process; half are referred to other organizations for financial coaching. The organization requires a certain debt-to-income ratio and employment status

In order to qualify, applicants must make a low income based on family size, but not too little to take on a subsidized mortgage. For example, a family of four's household income needs to be between about $37,000 and $72,000. Habitat for Humanity offers an individualized mortgage that is not more than 30 percent of the family's income.

The organization is able to do this through donations and grants.

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity will help about 100 people purchase homes this year, Haugen said. About half of those will be ones built by volunteers and half will be on the open market through a new partner-

Loon Chronicles IV: So many decisions The Loons now have a second potential nesting site to consider as they lock in on their site. Len made the four-hour drive up to Mantrap Lake and picked up a second manmade nest. He enjoyed a two-hour tour with the Mantrap Lake Loon Whisperers and learned that their Loon population has more than tripled with the assistance of 20 smartly placed manmade Loon nests. Len and Jason Brown installed the new nest during the windy, freezing cold rainstorm later in the week. The nest is located in Ordway Bay, near the original nesting location that the Loons used in 2011-2016. We have noticed that the Loons are spending more of their time in that general area.

They still seem more preoccupied with having a good time than getting down to the business of building or moving into their nest. The nest in the War Zone has been taken over by Geese. Two Common Terns guarding a pair of Goose eggs in the nest were not happy to see us and let us know it. Who knows what deal was struck for that arrangement. We spotted a pair of Ring-necked Ducks and a Yellow-headed Blackbird near the War Zone. So much activity!

Emma was selected from students who advanced to the fi nalist level in the National Merit Scholarship Emma Nelson competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. For many years, NE Metro 916 has partnered with the nonprofit Urban Boat Builders to give students a unique experience. Through the guidance of master boat builder Phil Winger, students with special needs push past barriers to complete beautiful wooden boats. This year they made a Skin On Frame Canoe and a Mississippi River Skiff. Twenty students from several different district programs come together in different shifts to work on these boats, which are built one at a time in the shop room at Quora Education Center. For many of these students (ages 15-21), working on the boats is their favorite part of school. The experience builds confidence and teaches valuable skills. Students say that they are doing more than they thought they were capable of doing.

The reward is launching and paddling around the bay at Matoska Park on White Bear Lake in their creations. They learn how to navigate these amazing boats and occasionally take a dip in the lake in the process. The launch is set for 9:45 a.m. Monday, May 20.

1969 The White Bear Lake City Council passed a resolution last Tuesday evening that established policies and regulations governing the use of street end extensions abutting White Bear Lake. The $200 donations were accepted by Cathy Wyland, right, on behalf of Mahtomedi Area Educational Foundation, and Dawn Hank on behalf of the White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation. Hank shared her gratitude to Rotary for supporting initiatives to raise awareness and education around a topic close to her heart. In 2008, Hank’s 14-year-old son Devin lost his battle with depression and took his own life.

‘Swedish Ninja’ competing on NBC show for third time

How was your weekend? Leif Sundberg, former Mahtomedi athlete, spent this past weekend competing on NBC’s “American Ninja” program, for the third time.

“It will be aired later this summer,” Sundberg told the Press last week.

“I can’t tell you how it went — NBC has rules about that!”

Sundberg, who bills himself “Swedish Ninja,” competed Saturday and Sunday in Tacoma, Washington, one of six regional sites chosen

by NBC. He is one of 600 contestants chosen from about 7,200 applicants.

The 29-year-old graduate student hopes it goes as well or better as 2018, when he placed third of 100 in qualifying at Minneapolis, then 17th of 30 the next night in the finals. There was prize money for making finals and for placing third. On the broadcast, he had a large segment for the Minneapolis Finals episode and was the first competitor they showed in the episode.

The first time he qualified was 2016, where he exited early, falling on the third obstacle, the disk runner, which is a balance obstacle.

“I was actually pretty disappointed in myself,” he said. “I took a couple weeks off of training after my fall, but then I got right back to work after that.”

Buoyed by last year’s performances against a very experienced field, Sundberg is aiming higher: “This year I am much more confident in my abilities, and I have some lofty goals for my performance.”

Sundberg, who played soccer and baseball at Mahtomedi, and soccer at Bethel University, said he always enjoyed watching the show “and five years ago I decided to give it a shot.”

Married with no children, he worked in radiology technology for five years at Mayo Clinic before deciding to become a physician’s assistant. He’s currently in grad school at St. Catherine University. He and Victoria live in Lakeville.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound athlete trains at Edina Obstacle Academy, one of the gyms that’s sprung up in response to Ninja’s popularity. In the sport for five years, he acknowledges that it’s “risky” but he’s had just one mishap so far, a shoulder muscle injury last year.

While prize money is available at each stage, the ultimate “American Ninja” goal is a $1 million payoff which only one person has achieved in 10 years of the show.

Here’s how it works. There’s 100 competitors in each of six cities— Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Tacoma, Atlanta, and Oklahoma City this year — of which the top 30 after the first day compete in the City Finals on a longer and harder course. The top 12 of the City Finals advance to national

finals in Las Vegas, which consists of four separate courses. “You keep going until you fall,” Sundberg said.

Just two people have completed all four stages. They were both in the same year and just one got the million bucks, the one who did it faster.

Asked what appeals to him about Ninja, Sundberg explained that the obstacles are heaps of fun, that the “community” of participants is very supportive of each other, and that it keeps him in great shape.

“Competing on the show is just the cherry on top,” he said. ‘It allows me to showcase my skills in front of a large audience. I don't do it for the money, but the small payouts on the side don't hurt.”

White Bear girls snag section track title in true-team

By a razor-thin margin, the White Bear Lake girls captured the Section 4AAA true-team section championship, and a trip to the state meet, on Tuesday, May 7.

Team scoring was White Bear Lake 897, Blaine 888.5, Forest Lake 822.5, Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village 772.5, Cambridge-Isanti 731, Mahtomedi 695, Centennial 566, Duluth East 333, and St. Francis 328.5.

The state Class 3A meet will be held Friday at Stillwater.

The Bears scored big in hurdles. Erika Townley won the 100 (14.91) and 300 (46.06). Madeline Wallace took fifth in the 100 (16.64). Katie Hoover placed seventh in the 100 (17.06) and 11th in the 300 (52.52).

Alexys Guidry won discus (130-7) and took second in shot put (34-2 1/2). Oreoluwa Olusi placed fourth in both

events (109-3 and 33-9 1/2). Grace Johnson was fifth in discus (107-8).

Also winning for the Bears were Victoria Adebisi in the 200 dash (26.65) and Madeline Verkerke in the 1600 (5:12.75).

Lauren Eckerle placed second in the 800 (2:21.83) and Maggie Blanding in the 3200 (11:38.51). Also in the 3200, Natalie Andres was third (11:43.29) and Claire Schneider sixth (12:00.22). Also in the 1600, Melanie Pankow was fifth (5:25.87) and Josephine Moor 12th (5:45).

The Bears scored well in relays as the 4x200 team won (1:45.87), the 4x400 was second (4:15.45), and 4x800 was second (10:04.22) and the 4x100 third (50.82).

Other top-10 finishes were by Wallace, third, high jump (4-10); Jordan Gast, seventh, 400 dash (1:02.15) and Emily Brockberg eighth (1:03.93); Caitlin Wallace, fifth, long jump (16-7 1/2); and Briana Gilbert, eighth, triple jump, (33-1) with Wallace ninth (33-0 1/2).

Team scoring was Blaine 1033.5, Cambridge-Isanti 913.5, White Bear Lake 892, Forest Lake 844.5, Centennial 445, Mahtomedi 503.5, Centennial 445, Duluth East 396, and St. Francis 341.

Coach Tom Paulson said Sunday that the Bears were among the at-large

teams who’ll join the section champions at the Class 3A state meet Friday in Stillwater.

The Bears’ best events were distance and middle distance runs.

In the 1600, Max Nelson was first (4:26.19), Isaac Maruyama second (4:26.38) and Tryg Solberg fourth (4:31.09). In the 3200, Maruyama won (9:52.93) with Solberg third (9:53.54) and Dairon Lemieux tenth (10:18.74).

In the 800, Logan Tanttu won (2:00.82) with Sam Verkerke third (2:06.85).

What’s the best way for kids to learn golf?

I’ve received a number of emails regarding junior golf so I thought I would devote this column to looking at different options for juniors just starting out Tee through competitive high school Time players. Many of my clients have Betsy Larey said they wish they had learned to play when they were young. I will tell you that it’s much easier to learn golf as a child, so if you have kids or grandkids, there are a lot of options for them.

Prior to the golf boom in the 1990s, juniors had access to most golf courses at substantially reduced rates and junior instruction programs were readily available. By the early 2000s, golf had become big business and those reduced rates disappeared.

The only place where junior programs continued to flourish was at private country clubs. Junior golf instruction at the public level generally involved a series of lessons on the driving range, with little or no access to the golf course. That would be like learning to play baseball but never going out on the field.

What’s been created over the last 20 years is a whole generation of golfers who can swing the club but have no clue about how to play the game. In addition, they have little or no knowledge of golf rules or etiquette. I’m sure many of you have played behind a group of golfers like this. As an industry, golf needs

to do a much better job of attracting young people to the sport and teaching them the fundamentals of the game, including course management and rules and etiquette.

So what’s the best way to introduce juniors to the game? Generally speaking, anyone younger than 8 is better off starting with a couple of junior clubs and just working on hitting the ball. At this stage, it’s all about eye/hand coordination.

Formal instruction is too difficult to process, and most kids get pretty bored pretty quick. The goal for this age is to have fun.

Ages 8 through 10 is the perfect age to start golf lessons. Whether you want your child to have individual or group lessons depends on how motivated your child is. If your child is very coordinated and really shows a desire to play the game, they will progress faster in a one-on-one setting. However, if their friends are signing up for group lessons they may want to join with them and that’s fine. The most important thing to look for in group lessons is the student to instructor ratio. I think the maximum should be five students in a group. Any more than that and your child will not get much individual attention.

Once they get past their first summer of introductory lessons, you want to find a program that includes lessons as well as play on the golf course. I like to keep juniors together by age and by sex. All too often I’ve seen girls get intimidated being with a group of boys, and older kids really dislike being paired with smaller ones. So look for a program that does both. The sixth grade is

normally the time when you can start to tell if juniors are serious about the game. At that point you could go either way with private lessons or a junior league. And don’t forget to take them with you on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Many courses have substantially reduced rates for families after 3 p.m.

Gem Lake Golf Course in White Bear, Applewood Hills, and Oak Glen in Stillwater have great programs for juniors. I like the fact that all have executive courses for them to play on. You can sign up online or go to their websites for more information.

I run the Keller Girls Golf Academy, along with PGA Pro Jon Reigstad, at Keller Golf Course in St. Paul. I started this program six years ago because there were no organized instructional programs for junior high and high school girls who wanted to learn how to play competitive golf. We include private lessons, small group sessions, weekly league play, on course practice time with coaches and matches with other clubs. Against Roseville, Price struck out four and gave up one earned run while going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Olivia O’Connor was 2-for-4. Mikaya Stowe had a single, two walks and runs.

Against Cretin-Derham Hall, Price threw six innings and Madeline Petersen completed the shutout, backed by errorless fielding.

“Emily was incredibly efficient,” coach Kaity Wightman said. “The defense showed up as well and played a perfectly clean game.”

Natalie Dumas was 3-for-4 (double, RBI). Price and Stowe each delivered a two-run single with two outs.

After a tournament Wednesday at Highland Hills was stopped due to rain, the Bears placed eighth in an SEC meet at Eagle Valley in Woodbury on Thursday, with Schroeder shooting 80, Joe Frattalone 83, Jake Paulson 86 and Larson 90. Paulson, state qualifier last year, made his season debut; he’s been sidelined by a wrist injury.

At the Detroit Lakes Invitational on Friday/Saturday the Bears were ninth of 10 teams in high wind and sputtering rain. Larson shot 162, Frattalone 165, Camden O’Malley 167 and Roed 167.

A youthful Mahtomedi tennis lineup capped an unbeaten conference season with a 6-1 conquest of Hill-Murray on Tuesday, May 7. The Zephyrs finished 8-0 in the Metro East.

“The boys knew what was on the line today and showed up to play,” said coach Aaron Freer. “We know with continued hard work and commitment, Zephyr tennis can stay on top of the Metro East for years to come.”

The Zephyrs (10-3 overall) deployed one senior, one junior, six

sophomores, and two seventh-graders in the lineup against Hill-Murray.

The singles lineup of junior Peter Morris, sophomore Adam Radabaugh, and seventh-graders Jack Allaben and Sam Rathmanner all won. Also seeing action are sophomoress David Azcona, Wyatt Hanson, Sam Kalkman, Evin Sougstad, and Andre Yasis, and senior Corey Steinhauser.

The middle schoolers have been working on their musical Willy Wonka, which will be performed April 25th-27th so make sure to buy a ticket before they sell out.

White Bear student finalist for math prize A White Bear Lake seventh-grader embarked this month on a voyage to become a national math champion and earn a $10,000 grand prize. Ivy Tschetter, 13, is one of 16 fi nalists in the National Number Knockout competition.

On May 1, she competed in three rounds of mental number crunching during a five-day cruise to the Bahamas aboard the Carnival cruise ship Ivy Tschetter Liberty. Each of the fi nalists received two free tickets for the cruise and $800 in traveling money. At the end of the day, one of the fi nalists will be crowned N2K champi-

on and receive a check for $10,000. The winner’s teacher will receive $2,000. No word yet on how she did. “I am super excited and grateful for the opportunity to compete!� Ivy said. She added she loves that N2K is challenging, competitive and a unique “sport.�

Ivy and the other 15 fi nalists have already been through a rigorous series of local and regional competitions to reach the fi nals.

The National Number Knockout (N2K) competition is hosted by Classical Conversations Inc., a classical education resource used by homeschoolers in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries. Classical Conversations now has more than 125,000 students enrolled in its tutoring programs. N2K is open to all students, ages 10-14.

Ivy is homeschooled by her father Jeff Tschetter, and she has five siblings. Speech, math, art and P.E. are her favorite school subjects. She

loves playing pickleball, sings, and helps lead children’s worship services at church. She also loves to draw, particularly animals.

National Number Knockout is a mental math game played with three dice and a playing grid of 36 squares, each containing a number. Students are given 60 seconds to generate as many equations as possible with unique answers from the numbers on the dice using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, roots and exponents in such a way that the result is a number on the board. Five signs of spring more exciting than robins

Since robins are supposed to be the heralds of spring, there is inevitable confusion every year when someone or other notices that there are robins around even in the depths of the Minnesota winter freeze.

Although their springtime songs go hand in hand with the arrival of warmer weather, robins are not really the best indicator of spring. While many of them do migrate south for the winter, robins can be found in Minnesota during every month of the year.

This depends on whether the birds have found good food sources they can depend on to sustain them through the winter.

Robins keep a lower profile during the winter— they look a bit more drab, and they don’t sing much, so it’s understandable we might not notice them until they begin to disperse and claim territories during breeding season.

While it is lovely to hear the loud, clear melodies of the robins’ song when spring rolls around, here are five other signs of spring that are a little more exclusive to the season:

marshes and swamps. Spring peepers can be identified most the time by the criss-cross pattern on their back: their scientific name is P. crucifer, which means cross-bearer. The frogs come in several color variations, including brown, olive green, and gray, and some of them do not show the distinctive cross.

A common sight in neighborhood yards, many people let dandelions bloom for a few weeks in the spring to provide an extra food source for native pollinators.

Hermit thrush Related to the robin, hermit thrushes follow a migration pattern that more closely follows the cultural myth of spring robins. These birds are approximately the same size and shape as robins, but are a little more secretive, preferring wooded thickets to the high branches where we can often spot robins in our neighborhood. These birds are a warm brown color on top, with neat brown spots on a white breast.

There are several species of thrush that arrive in Minnesota from farther south each spring, but the hermit thrush is usually the earliest to arrive, appearing in mid-April. Hermit thrushes can be told apart from similar thrushes by the rusty, warm red color of their tails.

Spring peepers Though you might not always see them, you will definitely hear the high-pitched calls of these tiny frogs when the weather begins to warm up. Spring peepers can often be found in woodlands near

Trillium These brilliant white flowers of the lily family stand out boldly in the Minnesota woodlands in April and May. There are 39 different species of trillium in the U.S. These flowers grow and spread slowly, but can live for up to 25 years, according to The Native Plant Herald. Trillium have several different common names, one of which is “wakerobin,” since it has been observed to bloom along with the “arrival” of robins in the spring.

Dandelions Some people choose to leave dandelions on their lawn for the first few weeks on spring, in order to provide food for local pollinators, especially native bees. Dandelions don’t provide all the nutrition that pollinators need, but they bloom during a wide window, which allows native bees to supplement their diet as the spring bloom gets under way.

Dandelions are also edible to humans. They contain many vitamins and minerals, and can be used in meals similarly to spinach—a tasty alternative to weed killer!

WEATHER TIDBIT We’ve been dodging showers much of the month with a sprinkle or brief shower at times but our luck ran out last Wednesday, May 8 with an all-day soaking rain that totaled 1.71”. We faired much better than our northern neighbor, Duluth, which totaled 10.9” of snow. Better them than us, right? Fishing opener worked out nicely with only some late afternoon showers on Saturday.

I kind of wish there could have been more sun for Mother’s Day but settled for milder temperatures and light winds. Nature note: I spotted my first group of baby Mallards on White Bear Lake but waiting on them to hatch on Peppertree Pond. Many folks are cutting the grass for the first time.

Morel mushrooms Morel mushrooms are considered a wild delicacy.

The unique flavor of these mushrooms is so delicious that many people prefer them prepared as plainly as possible—usually just sautéed in butter.

Morels are often found along the edges of forests and meadows, frequently appear in areas that have been scorched by wildfire in the past year. The mushrooms have a “honeycomb” like appearance—a pitted bulb on top of a stalk. They vary greatly in size and color. Be cautious: this mushroom does have some dangerous lookalikes. False morels have been known to cause toxic reactions, but not in every case. The standard advice for gathering morels: Never pick and consume any mushroom without confirmation about the mushroom’s identity from an expert.

Celebrations Kevin Jensen, a WBL 1994 graduate, will be inducted into the St. Olaf College Hall of Fame. Kevin was the MIAC MVP and an AllAmerican in both of his seasons of soccer at St. Olaf and helped lead the Oles to the NCAA Tournament in both 1998 and 1999. The Oles were ranked as high as No. 5 in county in his junior season and peaked at No. 3 during his senior campaign. He is the son of Dean and Joan (Fleischhacker) Jensen.
