Out upon the therapeutic waters

Retired Air Force Sgts. Phil and Heather Erickson sailed for the first time on White Bear Lake this May. They took off on an Aquarius 23-footer with the lake's only American Sailing Association (ASA) instructor, Tim Black.

Black, a White Bear Lake resident who grew up sailing on the St. Croix River, has been teaching 10 years for Northern Breezes Sailing School, which has several locations in Minnesota. It was his first time bringing out veterans with the express purpose of determining how sailing can be therapeutic for those who have gone through trauma while serving their country. It's part of a new ASA program, Operation Vet Sail: A Salute at Sea, intended to combat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Ericksons, of East Bethel, retired after each served 20 years with the Air Force. They met while in training. The couple signed up for sailing lessons with the dream of moving south and traveling the Caribbean on a sailboat later in their retirement.

They received a $100 discount because they are veterans. Thom Burns, the owner of Northern Breezes Sailing School, has offered military veterans sailing lesson discounts for about a decade.

The ASA's new program was inspired in part by his generosity and how he has seen sailing bring healing to veterans. Burns, a retired Navy officer, drove ships for 10 years. He's been sailing for 40 years.

Heather, who worked in counterintelligence, said after an hour on the water that she believes sailing can be beneficial for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She witnessed firsthand the aftermath of trauma many veterans face when deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. She investigated IED (improvised explosive device) sites where military members died. Sailing requires concentration that helps prevent someone from having flashbacks.

“It keeps you in the now,” she noted. “You have to stay present.” The peace and quiet and lack of traffic and loud noises is also helpful. “It helps kind of to keep you centered,” she said. Although the Ericksons didn't take up sailing with the purpose to heal from trauma, they both experienced how it could be beneficial for veterans. Even something as simple as a highway overpass can cause flashbacks for a veteran, Phil noted. Out on the open water, there seemed to be no triggers for PTSD. Instead, the peace of nature surrounded them.

“I find this endlessly fascinating — the sky and the clouds, the wind and the waves,” noted their instructor, Black. “Every day is different.”

Phil was a meteorologist in the Air Force. His weather-predicting skills will come in handy for sailing.

Burns said he has observed that today's veterans return more stressed than the days of his deployments. He said this may be because of multiple deployments over a short period of time. But he's seen how sailing can be therapeutic. It's a time to experience peace, he noted, and just listen to the waves on the boat. It also gives veterans a chance to rebuild their leadership skills by taking charge of the vessel. He enjoys listening to veterans’ stories when he teaches.

“It creates a nice environment where people can live without stress, even if it's only a few hours,” Burns said.

According to ASA, studies show that veterans heal through exposure to nature and the sea. A treatment named Nature Adventure Rehabilitation revealed after a year of sailing lessons, 22 veterans with PTSD demonstrated significantly lower PTSD and depression scores and higher social and emotional quality of life scores. The Boat Is Sailing, an Israeli nonprofit that takes veterans with PTSD sailing, models their program after a 2007 Israeli study that shows veterans experience a decrease in depression and functional problems along with improved self-esteem.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 11 to 20 percent of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD each year.

Teamwork

hat does it mean to be a team player? The phrase is used often enough that it must have some tangible roots. I personally believe that our early, formative experiences on teams, as well as the dynamics within our families can play a role in how we work on projects that require a collaborative effort. I grew up as the middle child in a family with five kids. The older and younger brothers closest to me in age were both gifted athletes. My older (by two years) brother was graceful and talented with a keen competitive spirit. He was also four or five inches taller than me. My younger (by one year) brother was strong and deceptively fast, qualities that were especially effective as he pounded his way across the football field as a running back. No matter Angle of how much I trained, he always managed to pull ahead of me View when we raced down the quartermile gravel driveway on our Paul Dols farm. With such close proximity to natural talent, I figured out pretty early that if I was going to earn a place on an athletic team, I was going to have to work at it.

In retrospect, I’m grateful for the experiences on various teams while growing up, but also for the numerous professional collaborations I’ve been part of over the years. I do believe that an understanding of roles and team dynamics can be helpful in work situations. On the (thankfully) rare occasions I’ve conflicted with coworkers, one of the first questions to cross my mind is whether or not the person has ever been on any kind of team or group project.

Following the recent finale of the popular Game of Thrones series, I asked a colleague at work what he thought about the final season. He was among the loyal followers who were disappointed, saying that the theme of “we need to work together or die” that had been alluded to throughout the series had been squandered in the end. I never gave the series that kind of weight, but the significance of the “work together or die” theme follows a historical line starting with the earliest groups of humans and continuing with the pilgrims, pioneers and into the present.

Figuring that no matter what the profession or skill you are practicing (myself included), it never hurts to revisit the fundamentals. I found some information on the Psychology Today website that relates to what makes good work team members.

They included: 1. Honest and Straightforward. A good team member is up front. He/she doesn’t play games, or lead others on. You can count on a good team member to tell you what’s what, regardless of whether it is good news or bad news. 2. Shares the Load. A good team member does his or her fair share of the work. There is a sense of equity and fairness in the good team member. A sense of equity is critically important for team members’ collective motivation. 3. Reliable. The good team member can be counted on. She or he meets deadlines and is on time. 4. Fair. A good team member takes appropriate credit, but would never think of taking credit for someone else’s work. 5. Complements Others’ Skills. An important characteristic of effective work teams is the shared capacity. Every member has areas of strength and some weak spots.

A good team member provides some unique skills and/or knowledge that move the team forward. 6.

Good Communication Skills. Teamwork is social, so good team members need to be skilled, and tactful, communicators. 7. Positive Attitude. No one would ever follow a pessimistic leader, and the same goes for team members. A positive, “can-do” attitude is critical for the good team member. The conclusion is that if you think about successful projects and the best team members you have worked with, the odds are that they have many of these qualities. Go team!

ust like that, another successful school year is coming to an end. The 2018-19 school year has been an exciting one and the district’s story continues to unfold as the Facilities Planning Committee has finished their year-long schedule of meetings and presented a recommendation to the School Board. This committee, with more than 90 parents, staff and community members, has been critical in conversations when discussing the future of the district. This experience has given me the opportunity to engage with families, staff and community through Movers & members conversations both formal and informal.

I welcome the discussions because each one brings a bit of shared understanding about where we may be going as a district and as a community.

Our projected enrollment growth makes the facilities conversations necessary. The decades-long, unfinished community dialogue about our current two-campus high school system makes it the right time to look at the programmatic realities and possibilities, as well.

After much consideration and

comprehensive nature means it touches each of our buildings.

A part of the committee’s recommendation that has been a point of discussion in recent weeks is the future District Center, which is currently located in the 100-year-old White Bear Lake High School. With Central Middle School expanding into the space, the building will once again house students. The committee’s plan presented to the School Board in April included a discussion of Central Middle School (including the current District Center) being replaced at some point in the future, potentially 10-20 years out. The current board and district administration has not accepted that portion of the plan, due to the cost and the historical significance of the building.

In order for the recommended set of projects to become a reality, it would require a successful bond referendum that could potentially be held this fall.

The School Board will be deciding over the summer whether to put a bond referendum on the ballot.

Information on safe childcare

he life of a child is precious. Childcare licensing is important to provide the necessary oversight to ensure the care is provided in a healthy and safe environment, provided by qualified people who can meet the developmental needs of all children in care.

Some providers are not required to become licensed because they meet a state exclusion, such as childcare provided by a relative caregiver only to related children; childcare provided to children from a single, unrelated family for any length of time; or childcare provided for less than 30 days in any 12-month period.

If a provider does not meet the above exclusions, they must become licensed.

Being licensed provides benefits to the providers, including tax credits, grant possibilities, access to the federal food program, liability insurance, and Parent Aware.

In the 2010 census, Washington County had 33,220 children ages 0-9. Approximately a third of these children need childcare because parents are working or in school.

Childcare is also a large part of the state economy. The yearly average cost of care for an infant in Minnesota is $8,424 for a family provider and $15,704 for a childcare

center. Prices generally decline as a child gets older.

Childcare providers in Minnesota are mandated by state law to hold a professional license. A childcare license shows that a program has met state standards for operating a childcare program, covering minimum standards, such as health and safety, safe sleep practices, caregiver-to-child ratios, supervision requirements, staff training requirements, record-keepMovers & sanitation, ing requirements, and Shakers background checks for staff. The Minnesota Rebecca Department of Human Knighton Services (DHS) licenses childcare centers and Washington County has its own licensors W hi t C who monitor the in-home family child providers. Counties are responsible for monitoring family childcare programs and making licensing recommendations to DHS. Washington County has about 375 family child care providers.

One example of how licensing re-

quirements are in place for the safety of children is the safe sleep requirements for infants. In 2013, legislation added safety standards to reduce the number of Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID) that occurred yearly in childcare settings.

Providers use a safe sleep environment for infants that includes cribs empty of all items other than a pacifier and infants laid on their back to sleep. Providers are required to do monthly safety checks on the cribs and take yearly training on reducing the risk of SUID. The strengthened rules regarding infant sleep have significantly reduced SUID deaths in Minnesota.

Parents who are searching for childcare may use the state website www.licensinglookup.dhs.state.mn.us to identify licensed providers and see basic information, such as their address/telephone number, licensed capacity, and any recent licensing violations. Parents will need to call individual providers to find out if providers have current openings. All licensed providers are required to post their license in a prominent place. A posted license will show the dates of licensure, the agency that licensed them, capacity requirements and if there are any restrictions on the license.

Will watch prescription mandates

Thanks go to state Rep. Dr. Alice Mann, who left her clinical practice to run for state office in order to make overdue, necessary changes regarding pharmacy benefit managers’ (PBM) clout in the pricing and availability of prescription drugs in Minnesota. I for one had no idea PBMs existed, with a main goal being, “The PBMs, for example, negotiate deals that have drugmakers charge a set price but rebate a large share of that price to insurance companies” and other practices leading to the overcharging of patients.

I will be watching closely for evidence that the changes mandated by the Legislature actually are being put in place — and everyone in Minnesota who takes prescription meds should do the same.

The building season is in full stride and yet Hy-Vee has yet to break ground (on Hoffman Corner). I am sure the company is trying to “strongarm” the three businesses to the east out of their property. Hopefully our local governments won’t side with big business and hand over the property to Hy-Vee via eminent domain or other government robbery.

Beholden to the people no longer applies

“Beholden to the People” is the principle our representative democracy should strive for. The framers of our Constitution believed that our representatives should be a microcosm of the people they serve, with the same goals, ideals and desires. Familiar with the issues important to us, their vote would mirror the vote we would cast. Current federal and state governments have eroded our government so far that the phrase “Beholden to the People” no longer applies. Studies have shown that our representatives’ votes do not reflect the people’s beliefs.

Their votes align with the interests of elite donors and political action committees (PAC).

Their time is hijacked by demands to fundraise (more than half of their time while in session).

While the framers attempted to prevent such a situation, political parties and big business have eroded any such protections provided by the Constitution. As our elected officials serve their respective parties and PACs, We the People are squeezed out. RepresentUs is a national, nonpartisan campaign that brings together conservatives, progressives and everyone in between to pass anti-corruption laws in cities and states across the country that stop political bribery, end secret money and fix our broken elections.

Our campaign is centered around our model legislation, the American Anti-Corruption Act. This Act does three main things:

Mega-school doesn’t fit in White Bear Lake

I’m writing about a situation that isn’t receiving nearly enough attention. You may have read a few weeks ago about the school board’s plan to build a massive 5,000-student mega-campus within walking distance of our charming downtown.

A school of this size will create traffic and chaos, not the ideal fit for our community. Worse yet, it DOESN’T FIT. Current plans for the mega-school include purchasing and demolishing 20-30 family homes. Unluckily for us, my family happens to own one of the homes.

Our family has been in “The Bear” for 15 years.

I’ve coached here, donated money to the school system and put a spotlight on the community with the All Hockey Hair Team videos. Heck, I even cowrote a song for the WBL food shelf titled (ironically), “Ain’t Home ‘til White Bear.” And now a few people on the school board have decided our home should be collateral damage for their massive campus.

It’s paralyzing to have your home on a tear-down list. Should I remodel the basement? Should we do the window boxes this year? And it puts your life in a holding pattern, as we will be unable to sell our home with the cloud of uncertainty of this project looming. And it’s not just us: the future of our entire neighborhood has been hijacked, as we are unable to control our own destiny.

Many of these houses are beautiful historic residences. These are not tear-down houses. Quite the contrary: in some cases, they are family homes that have been passed down for generations.

I’m urging you to email members of the school board to let them know what you think of a massive 5,000-student campus being plopped down right next to our charming downtown, and a project that will force families in our community to lose their homes.

Simply put, the school board’s plan is not a good fit for White Bear. And it doesn’t fit in White Bear.

Arlene D. Johnstone My dear wife Arlene D. Johnstone, who started her journey to the Lord's house on January 6 1951, ended the journey on February 5 of this year after a long illness.

She is missed by her husband Craig, children Jill and Brent and daughter in-law Stephanie, grandchildren Dylan, Brysen, Cory, Adam and Maleah. Arlene is also survived by sisters Judy Otte, Cathy Hagen, Elizabeth Bekken and brother Ed Otte (Laurie).

Arlene was born to Gene and Dorothy Otte of White Bear Lake and lived in and around WBL all her life. She worked her first job at Johnstone’s Dairy and Grocery where she met her future husband Craig. They married June 5, 1970. In the next 48 years, they were blessed with two children and many, many more blessings. Arlene was a very quiet, thoughtful, loving person who was steadfast in her faith in the Lord. She was a true friend to many. I wish to thank all of our friends who through the good times and tough times stood by us and the many prayers they offered for the healing of my beautiful wife.

In accordance with Arlene’s and my plans made many years ago and knowing how precious the 13 weekends of summer are, we made plans to have a Celebration of Life during the week. The Celebration of Life will be held 4:30-9 p.m. Thursday, June 13 in the Garden Room at Jimmy's Convention Center, 3565 Labore Road, Vadnais Heights. We invite all who know Arlene to come celebrate her new Chapter in everlasting life.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff reported the following incidents:

Vadnais Heights • A caller reported seeing a large raccoon on the roof of the garages in the 1100 block of County Road D the evening of May 12. The caller thought the raccoon was despondent and might jump. Deputy services were not required.

• A male, 35, and female, 33, both out of White Bear Lake, were arrested for possession of narcotics May 12 in the 800 block of County Road E. An investigation is underway.

• “Gaming headsets” were stolen overnight May 12 or 13 from a vehicle belonging to a St. Cloud guest at the Fairfield Inn in the 1100 block of County Road E. • Responding to a report of juveniles entering an abandoned building in the 3400 block of Centerville Road on May 12, deputies waited for the youths to emerge and turned them over to their parents.

• Entry was forced and a pair of sunglasses and a union card were stolen overnight May 13 from a vehicle belonging to a 23-year-old Solon Springs, Wisconsin, man in the 3500 block of Vadnais Center Drive.

• A tenant complained May 15 about a hole in the apartment ceiling of his unit in the 1000 block of County Road E. An investigation proved the hole to be a bullet hole. An investigation is underway.

• An iPad and other items went missing during a forced entry break-in of a work vehicle overnight May 13 at the Country Inn & Suites parking lot in the 3500 block of Vadnais Center Drive.

• Acting on a May 18 tip about a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the 3200 block of Highway 61, a deputy arrested a 28-year-old Circle Pines man for possession of stolen property.

• A “mean dog,” according to a caller, chased an “innocent duckling” into a storm drain the evening of May 13 on the corner of Berwood Avenue and Berwood Court. The caller attempted a rescue but the bird, now described as a “gosling,” was last seen hightailing it into the sewer system.

• A 39-year-old St. Paul woman reported the theft of her ’96 Honda Civic May 14 at Edgerton Street and Vadnais Boulevard. The vehicle was recovered six days later in the parking lot of the Little Canada Elementary School.

White Bear Township • A cellphone was reported stolen May 14 at Polar Lakes Park in the 1200 block of Hammond Road during a soccer match, according to the victim, a 38-year-old Grant woman.

• A 66-year-old local man was taken into custody in the 5600 block of Otter View Trail May 17 on a warrant complaint.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

Grant • A student in possession of an e-cigarette was reported at Mahtomedi High School May 17.

• A person at Cedar Ridge Meridian Behavioral Health was arrested on a warrant May 17.

• An Amazon driver got stuck in the mud in a driveway in the 9000 block of Heron Avenue N. May 18.

The homeowner said they wanted to contact Amazon and ask them to pay for property damage to her grass and driveway. Stillwater Towing came to assist the vehicle.

The Amazon driver became upset because he didn’t know he would have to pay for the tow.

• A driver hit a large deer near 117th Street and Great Oak Trail N. May

20. The airbag deployed and the vehicle was heavily damaged. The driver was not injured; the deer had taken off. The deer appeared from the south ditch as the driver was traveling westbound.

• Two students using e-cigarettes in a vehicle were reported at Mahtomedi High School May 20.

• A construction worker accidentally cut a gas line while replacing deck boards in the 10000 block of 65th Street May 21. The gas line, which was to a pool heater, was shut off by the fire department.

Xcel Energy confirmed there were no further problems.

• An unlocked vehicle was entered in the 6000 block of Jasmine Avenue N. May 21 and $30 in cash was stolen from the center console.

The owner was advised to lock his vehicle and remove anything of value.

Mahtomedi

Street reportedly failed to yield.

• A resident on Shamrock Drive reported May 17 that he saw unauthorized credit card charges totaling $15. He had already received a new account from his credit union.

• A 58-year-old woman digging for agates on May 18 in the construction company’s pile of rocks next to the fire hall near Hallam Avenue and Stillwater Road was asked by a deputy to move along.

• On May 21, a resident reported numerous items she considers hazardous waste dumped on Viking Drive near the lake in Pine Springs. She showed several photos of paint cans and garbage.

She retrieved a name and address from a cardboard box, which could assist in identifying a suspect. A deputy said they would investigate.

Pine Springs • Two people were injured in an accident near Hilton Trail and 62nd Street May 20. A woman’s forearm was lacerated and her daughter experienced head pain. The woman was driving southbound on Hilton Trail when a northbound vehicle in the turn lane to go west on 62nd

• Two people were stumbling along a sidewalk and on the side of the road near Glenmar Avenue and Stillwater Road May 21. A deputy determined they were intoxicated and trying to walk home from the bar. The deputy transported them a short distance home.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • Theft of a bike worth $500 was reported in the 4700 block of Sandra Lane May 16.

• Theft of a firearm was reported in the 1500 block of County Road E May 17.

• Theft of a bracelet worth $26 was reported in the 2100 block of Fourth Street May 17.

• A community service officer was dispatched to White Bear Parkway and Township Parkway May 17 for a turtle blocking the road. The turtle was moved to an appropriate location.

• A 21-year-old driver was arrested for DWI near Oak Drive and Homewood Avenue May 20. Alcohol level was 0.19.

• A window was broken at a business in the 1600 block of Birch Lake Avenue May 20. The estimated damage loss is $500. No suspect information.

• A White Bear Lake resident was scammed via phone in the 3800 block of Hoffman Road May 20. $30 loss. No suspect information.

• Officers responded to a residential alarm in the 1700 block of County Road E May 17. Officers located a broken window; nothing was stolen.

• A 33-year-old Fridley resident passed a counterfeit $100 bill in the 4700 block of Highway 61 May 20. Later the same morning, the person passed two counterfeit $50 bills in the 4800 block of Highway 61. The suspect was apprehended nearby and taken into custody for felony uttering counterfeit currency. Investigation also found the person in possession of suspected narcotics.

• Panhandlers were arguing at White Bear Avenue and I-694 May 18. They were advised by an officer.

• A 31-year-old White Bear Lake resident was arrested on a felony mail theft warrant in the 3800 block of Midland Avenue May 18.

Lake level reading: ‘flirting with all-time high’

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The water level is up, again.

Like he’s done just about every month for years, White Bear Lake Conservation District director Mike Parenteau provided a quick report on lake health at the May 21 meeting. The news is good.

“Elevation right now (May 21) is 925.14 feet — 3.5 inches above last month,” reported the White Bear Lake board member.

Last month, Parenteau noted the lake level was 6 feet higher than the all-time low set in 2013. “Now we’re flirting with the all-time high, which is 926.7 feet. We need 18 inches.”

The all-time high mark was set in 1943. According to Parenteau, stories from “old-timers who are no longer with us” recalled the flooding in Birchwood and Wildwood. “They didn’t know what to do,” Parenteau said.

“The DNR had the outlet set high then. In the middle of the night, people with sledgehammers took it out.”

The lake is almost a foot over the overflow outlet leading to Bald Eagle Lake, which is set at 924.3 feet. Water is also flowing fast out of Bald Eagle Lake, headed north.

Water temperature, Parenteau added, is 59 degrees, the same as last year at this time.

In other action at the May 21 meeting, the WBLCD board: • Approved spending $46,000 for treatment of invasive watermilfoil this summer. A survey is planned in June to identify areas needing treatment.

• Approved a request by Docks of White Bear to expand from 200 to 250 slips.

When Birchwood board member, Susie Mahoney, questioned whether the marina’s northern dock impedes Tally’s repair area, owner Brian McGoldrick reminded the board that he is completely within the riparian area. “The Tract family has owned the property since 1959 and has 720 feet of shoreline,” McGoldrick pointed out. “Tally’s has 90 feet and the city 324 feet. McGoldrick, who also owns Admiral D’s, figures he lost $1 million when the lake level dropped. “I couldn’t rent 100 slips. Now that the lake is going up, I want to recoup that money because it will probably happen again,” he said. “The lake goes up and the lake goes down.”

Longville wanted the board’s input on whether to balance the budget for 2020. The preliminary budget is $140,000. To balance that amount, cities must be allocated $70,500, she said. That number is divided among the five communities around the lake. License and dock fees may be increased to offset the allocation amount, a discussion held for next month. “Some cities have asked us to do that,” Longville said, “to have income come from the people using the lake.”

The budget will be approved in June.

POLLINATORS: Native plants the new style of informed gardeners FROM PAGE 1A

became officially pollinator friendly in 2018, Phinney hopes more residents and others from across the Twin Cities will join the pollinator plant movement. “They (pollinators) need more than a small patch,” she noted.

The city became pollinator friendly at the suggestion of the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee. It followed other cities in the northeast metro, including Stillwater and White Bear Lake. About 35 percent of food crops and 75 percent of flowers depend on pollinators, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Humans depend on bees, butterflies, other insects, birds and bats for about one-third of food, according to some scientific estimates.

According to recent research, more than 50 percent of insect species are declining and 30 percent are heading towards being endangered, said Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources senior ecologist Dan Shaw at a conservation forum May 17 hosted by Ramsey County Parks and Recreation.

Stress on ecological systems caused by pollution, habitat loss, higher temperatures in urban areas, impervious landscaping and extreme precipitation all play a factor.

Some pollinators rely on certain native plants for survival, Phinney said. For example, Monarch butterflies only lay eggs on milkweed plants and the resulting caterpillars only feed on the plant’s leaves. Different varieties of bees also tend to feed on certain native plants.

“We have 400 species of native bees in the state, and they all have unique needs,” Shaw said.

For example, the rusty patched bumblebee, a threatened species, tends to visit spotted Joe-Pye weed, wild bergamot (bee balm) and Culver’s root, according to “Pollinators of Native Plants” by Heather Holm.

Phinney said she has all three of those plants. She has quite a variety of native plants that bloom in the spring, summer or fall, throughout her front, side and backyards. To have a pollinator-friendly home garden, you don’t need to have only natives, she noted.

Popular European plants imported to the U.S. and commonly used in gardens can add color and variety. But Phinney does suggest avoiding “double bloom” flowers because the petals are so thick and large that pollinators have trouble getting to any of the nectar or pollen.

Native trees, such as oaks, are also good for pollinators in the spring. Native plants attract insects that attract the birds that need them to survive.

Besides saving pollinators, having native plants makes gardening slightly less work, Phinney noted. She keeps the fall’s leaves in her garden as a natural mulch. She still has to weed, but her perspective on what is a weed and what isn’t has been informed by her growing knowledge of native plants.

“This one came on its own and I’m leaving it,” Phinney said of a native white baneberry bush that popped up in her front garden recently. She suggests visiting minnesotawildflowers. info for identification assistance.

Phinney also volunteers with the Wild Ones Big River Big Woods Chapter to maintain a community pollinator garden at Island Lake Elementary School in Shoreview. The garden was planted by a group of local Boy Scouts nearly a decade ago and is open for visits from the community during the summer. Phinney is also involved with a group of locals who maintain native plants at the Shoreview Commons and a rain garden at Lake Johanna Fire Station No. 4.

The model utilizes updated MLCCS land cover to identify high quality pollinator habitat and analyzes proximity to other habitars based on assumed flight distances of various pollinators. “Native plants are a natural part of our food web and well adapted to local conditions,” noted John Bly of Blue Thumb. “They require no pesticides and no fertilizer and, once established, they require little or no water.” Minnesota plants will be sold by a variety of local growers at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Shoreview June 1 and Oakdale City Hall June 8. Ramsey County conservation groups will offer educational resources at the Shoreview event and Washington County will offer resources in Oakdale.

The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources recently partnered with Washington County to perform pollinator mapping, Shaw said. The map identifies the places in the county where pollinator habitat should be restored. A mapping project is underway in Minneapolis; the state is looking for partners in Ramsey County to get involved with mapping the area.

When a wide range of landowners are involved in native planting, it creates a sewn-together network for pollinators, Shaw noted. In addition, native plants are less expensive to care for than turf.

Ramsey County Master Gardener and Shoreview resident Dawn Pape said she hopes the style of yards change. Decades ago, lawns became popular and now turf is the largest irrigated “crop” in the U.S.; it occupies more land mass than corn.

Called White Bear Apartments, the complex will sit on 4.6 acres of land legally known as Strawberry Acres. The property consists of five parcels, two of which are vacant and the other three single-family residences with sizable backyards. At 41 units per acre, zoning will change from general business and medium-density residential to high-density residential.

Planning and Zoning Coordinator Samantha Crosby provided the results of a traffic impact study to the commission. There are two access points: A recently approved rightin/right-out on County Road E, and Linden Avenue.

The county was hesitant to allow any access at first from County E, which likely would have put a kibosh on the project. A concession was a right-in/right-out and the “undesirable consequence” of pushing more traffic onto Linden. A concrete median will prevent illegal left turns to and from the access.

Traffic engineers estimate the complex will generate 956 trips a day; 76% of those will use Linden and 24% will use E, according to Crosby. “Linden currently has 1,100 trips per day and is designed to handle the additional trips,” she noted.

Linden Avenue townhome owner Karen Bushee was the only resident to speak during a public hearing.

She asked the commission to consider another access road — Hoffman — for safety reasons. The homeowner worries about being rear-ended due to the close proximity of her driveway to E. Commissioner Mark Lynch tried to explain to Bushee that Hoffman Road cannot be accessed from the apartment complex at this time. “It's not part of the development,” he told her.

“I don't feel heard about this safety issue,” maintained Bushee, who repeatedly asked that Hoffman access be considered.

Commissioner Marvin Reed iterated what Lynch said, pointing out that the parking lot dead ends in the upper northwest corner adjoining the Stadium property. It could go through the Stadium eventually, but not now, Reed said.

Asked if a second complex was planned on that 5.7-acre parcel, company Vice President Maureen Michalski said she preferred not to comment. City staff refer to the project as phase one, so a second complex sounds probable.

The city has talked to traffic engineers about an outlet at Hoffman, Crosby said, but there is little support. There is also no stoplight at Hoffman and E, making it “less safe” than the Linden intersection.

As part of the park dedication, a triangular piece of land west of Hoffman Road is being negotiated to create a trailhead connection to the future Bruce Vento Regional Trail extension. The small piece will be deeded to the city after the plat has been recorded.

The developer is offering a number of features that exceed minimum code requirements, Crosby

pointed out. There is a tree trench for stormwater — like a rain garden for trees; car charging stations for electric vehicles in the underground parking lot; a dedicated recycling chute; a dog grooming station and architectural features such as a stone base, shake siding and residential roofline. There will also be a freezer/refrigeration unit for food deliveries in the reception area.

A similar complex was built in Blaine in 2017, Michalski said.

The studios were rented before it opened. “There was much more demand for smaller, more affordable units,” she noted. “The price point for a two- or three-bedroom is at the point where people could afford a mortgage.”

Commissioner Lynch said he “likes the plan,” and recommended approval. The commission unanimously agreed.

Bicycle exhibit opens at Historic Courthouse The public is invited to the Washington County Parks grand opening of the exhibition “Spokes & Folks: The Evolution of Bikes & Trails” from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Washington County Historic Courthouse.

This exhibition is curated by local Stillwater scholar Megan Arney Johnston. The courthouse is at the intersection of Pine and Third Streets in Stillwater.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — No-wake buoys are coming out of storage in the basement of City Hall.

A request by bird watchers and kayakers to make the Matoska Marsh area a no-wake zone was granted May 21 by the White Bear Lake Conservation District.

Concerned citizens told the board that critical habitat at Matoska is being damaged by boats speeding under the Manitou Island bridge. Island resident Ann Sundal said speedboats are disrupting fishermen, kayakers and canoeists and wildlife in the marsh.

“The boats very much disturb the wildlife, especially the loons,” Sundal said. “The lake is high, which is fantastic, but the loons are under attack by the high waves. They build small, mud nests and the waves come crashing in and destroy the nests. A no-wake sign would be good for all our waterfowl.”

Safety concerns were also voiced by a Glen Oaks Avenue kayaker who says she has to dodge boats near the marsh that don't see her.

District Chair Bryan DeSmet thanked the women for coming forward about the issue and made a motion to install up to four no-wake buoys near the bridge. The board will also seek permission to post signs on both sides

Loon Chronicles IV: Inseparable This was a challenging week for Loon watching on White Bear Lake. It looked and felt like November, with howling winds, huge waves, and cold rain. We even saw some snowflakes on Saturday.

The few times we made it out in the boat, the Loon pair were always together. Typically, they fish in different parts of the lake during the day and meet up at sunset. That was not the case this week, as they continued to stay very close to each other. We did observe what appeared to be some frantic nest building behavior near the shoreline. What looked like the beginnings of a nest did not make it past last week’s storms. The manmade nests remain an option. One evening, a “drop in” Loon joined the pair. All three immediately started dipping their bills, circling each other, and diving in a synchronized rhythm. We fully expected a territorial battle to erupt, like the Battle Royale we stumbled upon in May 2017. Fortunately, the threesome frolicked about with abandon and after 30 minutes of fun, the “drop in” Loon took off to the west and the Loon pair quietly made their way toward the War Zone. No jealousy or hostilities. Just good fun. Fingers are crossed for a calm, dry, and peaceful weekend for the Loon pair. Tick! Tock!

This fall, another Eagle Brook Church campus will open at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. The Mayo Civic Center will be considered a mobile site. According to the church's website, “Mobile sites are a great way to start a campus and bring people together. They have a lower startup cost, which means we can focus on building a strong community as we grow.” Eagle Brook built its first large-scale facility in Lino Lakes in 2005 and now has eight locations (and counting) in the metro area.

This year’s theme is “The Mysterious Acts of God,” focusing on fascinating but little-known stories and characters in the Biblical book of Acts. Plaintiffs ask Supreme Court to review lake level case

ST. PAUL — As expected, the parties that won the lake level lawsuit against the Department of Natural Resources, then lost on appeal, have requested review by the Minnesota Supreme Court.

In a petition filed May 21, attorney Byron Starns, who represents the White Bear Lake Homeowners' Association, maintained that the Court of Appeals' decision in this case presents important issues with “far-reaching precedential impact.”

“The decision directly affects White Bear Lake, its surrounding communities, citizens who live in those communities, and citizens from other areas who exercise the public's right to use the navigable waters of White Bear Lake,” Starns wrote.

The homeowners' counsel contends that the appellate decision has statewide importance. “It overrules or ignores prior judicial precedent interpreting the scope of claims authorized by the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act (MERA), section 116B.03.

The decision also makes new law by limiting long-established precedent of this court, recognizing that the common law Public Trust Doctrine protects the state's navigable waters and beds from alienation or waste by inaction or action of their trustee, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.”

The case involves the state’s environmental laws; particularly a doctrine of public trust that binds the state to protect its natural resources on citizens’ behalf — like those who use White Bear Lake for recreation.

“evoked a substantive legal dissent on both issues.” The majority opinion calls out for Supreme Court review of its interpretation of both MERA and the Public Trust Doctrine, he wrote, pointing out that the Court of Appeals did not set aside any of the district court's factual determinations, but decided the case on jurisdictional grounds.

Starns argued that the majority conclusion is based on a “misreading of factual findings” and overlooked the finding that the DNR independently violated state law and its own regulations with regard to surface and ground water management.

Starns maintained that the Court of Appeals “recognized the force of the

Public Trust Doctrine and its application to navigable waters and their beds but the majority refused to apply the doctrine for two reasons: because it mistakenly concluded that the claims and factual findings only related to the DNR's permitting for groundwater extraction from the aquifer and that such claims and findings were not within the scope of the Doctrine as construed.”

The (Appeals Court) majority has invited Supreme Court review of the Public Trust claim, Starns iterated, “by relying on its limitations as an error-correcting court for its dismissal of the claim.”

The lake association is an intervenor on the side of the plaintiff and co-petitioner, the White Bear Lake Restoration Association.

The petition now goes to the Supreme Court Commissioner's Office for analysis before consideration by the high court. Petitions are generally considered within 60 days of filing.

According to 2011 Minnesota Court Rules, the court hears regularly scheduled arguments each month, September through June. Its primary role in reviewing Court of Appeals decisions is to set precedent that develops and clarifies the law in important issues of broad impact. The high court rarely grants review just to correct an erroneous decision that affects only the parties to that case. As a result, the court grants review in only a small percentage of cases.

WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP NOTES WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — The Town Board approved the following at its May 20 meeting: • A resolution ending discussion of one-way parkway on Bald Eagle Boulevard (see “Bald Eagle tabled indefinitely,” May 15).

• A request to add a parking pad and second driveway access on property at 3949 East County Line Road North. Joe and Charlotte Mott wanted a spot to park a motorhome during the off season. The only way they can access their backyard is to install a driveway off a side street.

• Brandlwood Park upgrades at a cost of $86,000.

Playground equipment will be replaced, and several pieces of adult exercise equipment will be installed. The township received only one proposal from Northland Recreation to do the work at 5800 Meadowview Drive. The park is 30 years old and ready for a “redo,” agreed the board. An existing climbing boulder will stay.

The playground will be shut down during the construction this summer.

• A resolution amending the policy that details financial assistance to property owners living in a flood zone to modify FEMA flood maps. The township now will provide $500, a subsidy that has not been adjusted for 25 years.

• Tabled discussion of a sign ordinance amendment in the B-2 zone and a sign request for White Bear Maker Space at 5966 Hwy. 61. The matter will first go to the Planning Commission.

• Reminded residents of a June 4 public hearing to discuss 2019 street improvements. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. June 4 at Otter Lake Elementary School. The hearing gives residents an opportunity to speak to the board about the street project. Construction is scheduled end of July/early August for streets on the list. An assessment hearing will happen in October once construction is finished.

13. Ever since Rose and her late husband Ed Bayuk moved to White Bear Lake they have attended and supported Lakeshore Players Theatre. The annual fundraising gala on Thursday, May 23, was no different. Rose, at the age of 103, was there along with her son Mark.

White Bear Lake boys track finished a close second in the Suburban East Conference meet, outscored by Mounds View 184 to 172, Tuesday and Thursday at East Ridge.

Four seniors led the Bears. Kevin Boeing was a double gold medalist, winning high jump and triple jump.

Andrew Kohnen won the discus and took second in shot put. Conor McManamon placed second and third in the hurdle races. Sean Ruohmaki placed third in both shot and discus.

Shot put was the Bears best event.

Kohnen (51-10 1/2) and Ruohmaki (5010) each topped 50 feet for the first time, placing 2-3, while Luke Parzyck took fourth and Mitchell Landsberger sixth.

Next for the Bears is Section 4AA on May 28 and 30 at Stillwater.

White Bear Lake girls track-andfield has repeated as Suburban East Conference champion.

The Bears won seven events and outscored runner-up Stillwater 233.5 to 217, with the other seven teams far behind, in action Tuesday and Thursday at East Ridge High School.

Erika Townley picked up four golds in the last conference meet of her illustrious career. She repeated as champion in both hurdle races, anchored a 4x200 relay victory, and won a fourth event she doesn’t normally do, high jump.

Other individual champs for the Bears were freshman Lauren Eckerle in the 800 run and senior Caitlin Wallace in long jump.

The Bears scored heavily in relays, winning the 4x100 and 4x200 relays (see names in summary below) and placing second in the 4x400 and 4x800.

Next for the Bears is Section 4AA on May 28 and 30 at Stillwater.

Mahtomedi girls are Metro East track champs

The Mahtomedi girls track team captured the Metro East Conference championship, led by senior standout Kylie Krawczyk, on Tuesday and Thursday, May 22 and 24.

Krawczyk won 100 hurdles and long jump, also taking third in 300 hurdles and sixth in triple jump, in action at Simley High School.

Other scoring leaders were Sarah Stellmach, placing fourth in the 200 and 400 dash and fifth in the 100, and Jackelyn Ong, placing second in both long and triple jump.

Mahtomedi was hoping for a “Miracle on Ice” to materialize, their coach said, in the Section 4AA tennis finals Wednesday.

That didn’t happen and top-ranked Mounds View, as expected, turned back the Zephyrs 6-1 at the University of Minnesota. Two Zephyr seventh-graders paired up to win No. 2 doubles and avert a shutout.

“Such a deep and talented team we faced today,” Zephyr coach Aaron Freer said.

“Congrats to Mounds View on their section championship.”

That capped an exceptional season by Mahtomedi, which, seeded third, after capturing their conference title, beat No. 2 seed Roseville Area 5-2 in the semifinals to earn a shot at Mounds View. The

Seventh-graders Sam Rathmanner and Jack Allaben beat a very good No. 2 doubles team of Christo Alex and Peter Culp 6-4, 6-2 in the last match completed. Rathmanner is 20-0 and Allaben 17-3 for the season, normally shifting between No. 3 and 4 singles.

“The highlight of the match,” said Freer, noting how excited the Mahtomedi crowd got after “some tremendous shots by both players.”

In the individuals competition Friday, Mahtomedi entered Peter Morris and David Azcona in singles, and Rathmanner/Allaben and Steinhauser/Adam Radabaugh in doubles.

Victoria Adebisi is one of the top scorers on the White Bear Lake track squad that’s captured section trueteam and Suburban East Conference championships. At the SEC meet, the lanky senior placed fourth in both the 200 dash (26.51) and long jump (16-9) while running on the 4x200 relay that placed first. She uncorked a 17-7 3/4 long jump at state true team for second place. At the true-team section, she won the 200 dash (26.65). Adebisi was also a starting low post on the basketball team.

Octogenarian can draw a bow with best of them

When Edna Siniff was growing up, on re-claimed swamp land near the Florida Everglades, her dad would hand her a couple cartridges before leaving for work with instructions to “bring home something for dinner,” money being tight for the family. It was routine for the teenager to bag a rabbit or wild turkey or some other legal swamp critter with a .22 rifle. That was around 1950.

Now 82, the Mahtomedi resident recalls how she's deftly handled weapons, and myriad other challenges, all her life. She built a house of straw bales once. She helped get the state Legislature to fix a problem with ballots.

She went to college despite a cruel obstacle placed on her by a grade-school teacher, and she paid her way with money she earned in rodeos. She started a newspaper from scratch while farming.

Siniff's latest adventure, in retirement, is entering archery competitions, reviving one of several sports passions she had in her youth, and she has emerged as a champion, despite some serious old age health issues.

Competing since 2014, but battling back recently from a foot injury and two knee replacements that sidelined her for 18 months, Siniff won the Minnesota indoor championship in the Golden Female Freestyle, 12X class, on April 6 in Redwood Falls. She scored a 272, which topped her own state record of 259 set in 2016 — and qualified her for nationals.

To prepare for the upcoming competition, Siniff trains three times per week at A-1 Archery in Hudson, Wisconsin, working with Dana Keller. The 2019 Senior Games start June 15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She plans to share the driving with her youngest daughter.

“My surgeries were caused by wearing out parts. I’m thankful replacements are available,” said Siniff, who hung her bow on the wall for motivation during rehab. “I am almost back to full strength. I have to use a bar stool to keep from falling while shooting.”

She placed second in the Master Senior Female Freestyle at the Wisconsin state indoor Feb. 15-16 with a two-day score of 510, before focusing on the Minnesota tournament.

As a teen, along with handling a rifle, Siniff also competed in archery, and in as many other sports as a pre-Title IX female possibly could, including fast-pitch softball and basketball (“that old dumb girls half-court game they had then”) on non-school teams, a girls football game as a fund-raiser to build bleachers for their football field, and rodeos.

It was in rodeos, where she was a barrel racer and “hazer,” that she earned the money to go to college. A “hazer” keeps the steer close enough to the cowboy for him to tackle in the steer wrestling event. Edna said she saved up about $10,000, her cut for her “hazing” skills that helped several cowboys earn significant prize money.

There was one big problem with going to college. None would accept her, which dumbfounded Siniff. She also wondered why her high school wouldn’t let her take several courses she wanted. She learned later, to great dismay, that her third-grade teacher had labeled her as “retarded” for some reason.

After being rejected by colleges in Florida and neighboring states (“Nobody ever told me why”) she kept trying, eventually casting her lot with Michigan State because she had relatives there. With her application,

Mahtomedi resident Edna Siniff took first place recently in the Minnesota State Indoor Archery Championship, scoring an impressive 272 out of 300. In 2016 Edna set a state record of 259 in her class. Her current score is in the process of being certified by the MN State Archery Association. She is training for the 2019 Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

she included an impassioned letter, stating her case, which convinced an admissions official to invite her up to take some tests. She took the Greyhound bus to East Lansing and passed the tests easily. That’s where she found out, from that official, about the “retarded” label.

“I wanted to ask her (the teacher) about that, but she had passed away,” Edna said. “But I asked my principal to let me see my high school records, and it was there.”

Siniff earned her elementary education degree at Michigan State while resuming her shooting career by joining the rifle team. She said she was invited by letter to be an alternate for the U.S. Riflery Olympic Team.

However, members had to raise their own funds and it wasn’t possible for her. “I always felt ‘some day.’ Archery is my someday,” she reflects now.

Siniff married an Air Force officer, and taught school in Mississippi and then Alaska. They stayed in Alaska when her husband left the military and joined Alaska Fish and Game. Their first two daughters were born in Juneau. They moved to Minneapolis for him to pursue his doctorate at the U of M, and settled in Scandia in 1968.

While her husband traveled the world researching wildlife to help save various species from extinction, Edna, then with three girls, engaged in farming (a beef operation) and ceramics, while substitute teaching.

She ran for state representative in 1984 and lost, but stayed in the political arena when she “learned the damage punch card ballots had done to the voters.”

She studied the issue intently, took her concerns to the Secretary of State, and eventually joined another citizen in making a presentation to the Legislature, which acted on it and changed the system.

That experience led her to start the Country Messenger (now owned by Press Publications), which she ran

for 10 years.

She sold the paper in 1994 and the farm in 1995, and (divorced by then) moved to Washington, where she fulfilled a rather unusual ambition.

Building a straw bale house was a venture she had started studying when she was 18 years old. She had checked out houses in Iowa, Wisconsin, and South Dakota, all built of straw bales, before embarking on her own project.

In Washington, she said she constructed a 1,200-square foot, six-room, two-story house at an elevation of 2,850 feet in the Cascade Mountains, while working as an investigative reporter for a local paper and living in a trailer. Upon its completion, she lived in the straw bale house for five years before deciding to return to Minnesota. She advertised the house and sold it in three days.

Ten years ago, Edna’s middle daughter, Sherri, and her husband Stephen, in Mahtomedi, invited her to live with them and their two sons. They had a special apartment built to her specifications in the basement, designed by younger daughter, Nancy Parsons, an interior designer.

“It’s very pleasant here and I was able to watch my grandsons grow,” said Edna.

It was the grandsons — Ben, now a junior at Bethel University, and Sam, now a senior at Mahtomedi — who nudged Edna back into archery. Sherry and Stephen started “Grandma’s Day,” one day each week, during the summer and other school breaks, where the kids get to choose an activity with her. One of the activities the boys wanted was to shoot at A-1 Archery in Hudson. That was in August of 2013.

It had been many years, but Edna, using the old longbow from her youth, kept hitting bulls-eyes, which she attributed to “muscle memory.” After a few sessions with the boys, their grandmother saw a film at the YMCA, “The Age of Champions,” about the Senior Games, and immediately decided to go for it. “I just enjoy competing,” she admitted. “It makes you focus more on style and the right way of doing things. It forces you to practice.” And of course it was another challenge, the spice of life for Edna Siniff.

Zephyr girls trip Pioneers for share of lacrosse crown

Mahtomedi girls lacrosse had two close battles this season with Hill-Murray and won the second of those, 10-8, last Friday, earning a share of the Metro East Conference title.

That was the first loss for Hill-Murray (10-1 overall). Zephyrs lost the first showdown with the Pioneers 13-12 on May 1. They both finished 7-1 in conference, followed by Tartan 4-4, Hastings 2-6 and North St. Paul 0-8.

“Defense is how we beat Hill-Murray the second time around,” coach Heather Ahlers said. “I think defense goes unnoticed in a high-scoring game like lacrosse.”

The coach cited senior Anna Lindberg and sophomores Anna Raney and Terah Skillings as key cogs on defense. Lindberg missed the first H-M duel with appendicitis. “She reads angles, and has the best body positioning I’ve seen in my 11 years of coaching,” Ahlers said. Olivia Boxmeyer’s goaltending was another key against H-M. Other losses by Mahtomedi (10-3) were against Park of Cottage Grove (10-2) and Forest Lake (12-1).

Ellie Guzzo, a senior, is the scoring leader, with a knack for getting open for passes. Jayne Dimitri, sophomore, ranks second in the state for assists. The midfield duo of senior Dana Searles and junior Megan Johnson are key factors controlling the draw and creating turnovers.

WHITE BEAR SPORTS BRIEFS Bears’ pitcher throws no-hitter

A no-hitter by Trent Schoeberl enabled White Bear Lake to snap a nine-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over Park on Monday, May 21, in Cottage Grove.

The senior right-hander, who has signed with the Gophers, walked three and struck out 10 while holding the Wolfpack (5-14) without a hit.

“All my pitches were working, and more important, I was more consistent, threw strikes and didn’t get behind the hitters,” said Schoeberl of the first “no-no” he’s thrown at any level. “And the defense made the plays behind me. We had no errors, for the first time this season.”

The Bears finished the regular season 3-16 and will start Section 4AAAA Saturday at Northwestern in St. Paul.

White Bear Lake won its Section 4AAAA softball opener over Mounds View 5-4 in 10 innings, then lost to Roseville Area 5-2, on Thursday, dropping into the sudden-death bracket.

The Bears (7-14) were to face Woodbury on Friday at McKnight Fields.

Against Mounds View, Emily Price pitched all 10 innings and hit a threerun homer. Price pitched against Roseville as well. Mikayla Stowe and Madeline Peterson had RBI hits but the Bears had only four hits against Gabby Spencer.

New Zephyr hoops coach former Iowa State captain

Erica (Haugen) Zizzo, a former Iowa State basketball captain, is the new head girls basketball coach for Mahtomedi.

“Coach Zizzo has a great understanding of the game, and values the character lessons learned through basketball,” said Aaron Forsythe, activities director, in announcing the hire Thursday.

“These attributes, balanced with her competitive drive, will serve our student-athletes and community well, in the years to come.”

Zizzo succeeds Eric Prose, who stepped down after three seasons as head coach and 20 years of coaching various sports.

“I am extremely excited

for this opportunity,” Zizzo said, “and looking forward to coaching such an amazing group of young athletes.”

She was Erica Haugen when she scored 1,037 points for Osseo and made the all-tournament team when the Orioles were state runner-up her junior year, 1996. She is Osseo’s career leader with 356 assists and No. 3 with 270 steals.

At Iowa State, she helped the Cyclones win a pair of Big 12 championships, and played in four NCAA tournaments.

They had a 104-28 record in her tenure — including one win over 11-time national champion UConn.

“My role was to shoot the open shot and be the best defender on the court,” Zizzo said.

Zizzo, married with two sons, has lived in Mahtomedi for 10 years.

She runs East Metro Elite Girls Basketball Camp every August.

She’s also had stints as trainer for Mahtomedi Basketball Association, running a K-2 youth program, and serving as varsity assistant when Dan Greene was coach.

Mahtomedi’s defending state Class 3A baseball champions lost their last two regular-season games and will take an 11-8 record in playoffs. The Zephyrs lost to Anoka 2-1 as the Tornadoes’ Bill Tillman (three-hitter) prevailed over Leo Bustos (eight hits, eight strikeouts).

That snapped a five-game win streak.

Eastview ripped the Zephyrs 5-2 with Austin Drevin of the Raptors out-dueling Johnny Devore. Jake Arlandson was 2-for-3 for the Zephyrs. Section 4AAA playoffs start Thursday.

after beating Columbia Heights 14-0, St. Anthony Village 5-4 and Hill-Murray 5-4 in Section 4AAA last week.

The Zephyrs (12-8-1) will have two chances to win once Thursday at Lexington Memorial Park against whomever reaches the finals from the losers bracket.

Haley Rosenthal pitched all but two innings in the three playoff games.

Megan Neubeck was 3-for-3 with four RBIs vs. Columbia Heights, and Lauren Laviano had a single, triple and three RBI’s. The Zephyrs had five unearned runs against SAV, and the key hit was Claire Wirka’s two-run single. Against top-seeded Hill-Murray, Gena Sorini knocked in two runs.

Superintendent Hayes encouraged board members to attend program visits at all of their facilities and commented on the member use of the new Quora Education Conference Center. The redesign of the district and school websites will be launched on Wednesday, A few of the new features are: calendars that offer a subscribe feature, website content that fits the screen of the device you’re using, robust search functionality, and student/family/staff landing pages. The Facility Plan recently presented to the School Board on behalf of the 90-member committee has generated a lot of conversation. We continue to seek community input as we build a recommendation to bring the School Board this summer. One question that has come up in multiple conversations, which deserves to be addressed, has been the committee’s discussion of Central Middle School (including the current District Center) being replaced at some point in the future, potentially 10-20 years out. While we certainly honor the work that was done, we are confident that committee members will understand the current board and district administration has not accepted that portion of the plan, due to the cost and the historical significance of the building.Student Liaison Report - The National Honor Society held their Spring blood drive collecting 115 units of blood Student Council elected their executive board for next year, so congratulations to Liv Horvath, Izzi Perron, Anna Perron, and Abby Zavadil. They are now eligible to represent both 916 and White Bear High School at the international competition in June. Lastly, I would like to thank the board, Dr. Kazmierczak, and everyone else who has supported me the past two years as the student liaison. This has been an incredible experience that I will never forget. Some of my favorite moments include polling students about the flex learning day, attending the work study meetings about curriculum, and talking on a student panel at the MSBA conference. I would like to say good luck to Maddie. I know you will do a great job up here next year and will continue to represent the students with the passion you already showed this year. Lakeshore Theatre reschedules weekend play A much anticipated play by Dellwood resident LaWayne Leno set to premier June 1 and 2 at Hanifl Performing Arts Center has been postponed until October due to scheduling problems.

The play features a famous German pianist named Adele aus der Ohe who helped establish early concert life in the Twin Cities during the late 1800s.

As a prelude to the fall play, the Hanifl Center is instead presenting a piano recital featuring three of Franz Liszt’s greatest students: Moriz Rosenthal, Hans von Bulow, and Adele aus der Ohe, who was accepted as a pupil at age 12. Dellwood piano instructor Dr. Reid Smith will narrate as Franz Liszt himself to introduce the students.

Times remain the same for the replacement recital: 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1 and 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2.

The piano concert will also feature important inaugural performances by Adele aus der Ohe as presented by local pianists Jacob Taggart, Joseph Caswell and Clara Belle Wrolstad.

All three pianists, in their teens, have won numerous piano competitions.

Wrolstad (as Adele aus der Ohe), has played in Carnegie Hall four times. All are students of Smith.

This concert is not a substitute for the play, noted Smith, who directs the classical concert series for Lakeshore Players. “The Adele aus der Ohe play needed more rehearsal time than was possible during the inaugural first season of Lakeshore Players. This play will be a highlight in the next season,” he said.

The Steinway concert grand piano will also be dedicated to the German pianist during both weekend performances. A plaque outside the climate controlled room housing the piano will be engraved with Adele aus der Ohe’s name. Smith said a scholarship in her name will also be presented to Wrolstad.

The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners approved the special election schedule for District 1. The special election is being held following the resignation announcement of Commissioner Blake Huffman. The term of office runs through 2020. The district includes the cities of Gem Lake, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, and White Bear Township. Candidate filing opens June 4 and closes June 18. The primary election will be held June 28-Aug. 13.

The general election will be held Sept. 20-Nov. 5.

Voting will be available by mail and in person at the Ramsey County Elections Office at 90 W. Plato Blvd. in St. Paul. Hours and additional details will be available at rcelections.org. Governor signs bill to combat opioid epidemic

ST. PAUL – Gov. Tim Walz signed H.F. 400 into law May 23 to help combat the opioid epidemic in Minnesota. Paid for by a fee on opioid manufacturers and distributors, the law will provide local communities with the resources they need to address opioid addiction, intervention, treatment, and recovery.

“The opioid epidemic is devastating communities across Minnesota — claiming lives and leaving heartbroken families in its wake,” said Gov. Walz. “This law will help more families access the treatment they need and prevent addiction in the first place.”

The law will create an opioid stewardship fund paid for by a fee on opioid manufacturers and distributors. A new advisory council is established to review and select grant projects paid for by the fund. The bill also creates

prevention and education initiatives to address opioid addiction, intervention, treatment, and recovery.

There will be a ceremonial bill signing of H.F. 400 in the near future.

Filing opens for council candidates

Candidates for White Bear Lake City Council have until June 4 to file an affidavit of candidacy. Ward 1, 3 and 5 will be on the November ballot. Packets are available in City Hall. Should more than two people file for any one position, the city will hold a primary election on Aug. 13. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5. This tree planting is part of a supplemental environmental project agreed to between Water Gremlin and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

Water Gremlin, in collaboration with Tree Trust, will plant and maintain a total of 1,500 trees in White Bear Township, White Bear Lake and Gem Lake. These trees will be planted during three growing cycles beginning this year.

Encore careers make social impact

Northeast metro adults are among those finding their path to encore careers in the University of Minnesota's new Advanced Careers Initiative (UMAC) led by Shoreview resident Kate Schaefers.

UMAC is like a gap year for adults retiring from longtime careers or transitioning to new ones, explained Schaefers. The focus is on finding a pathway to social impact by using professional skills, whether paid or volunteer. Fellows participate as mentors in undergraduate classes and do a “midternship” (midlife internship focused on using professional skills) with a nonprofit. This school year was the first year of the full-fledged program. There were 16 fellows who graduated May 15.

Shoreview resident Lisa Mattson did her midternship with Second Harvest Heartland. Co-owner of a medical research company for over 25 years, Mattson is looking for a new way to use her skills in the nonprofit sector. During her midternship, she used her management skills to contribute to the organization's strategic planning process.

White Bear Lake resident Anne Colombo's midternship was at Prepare & Prosper, which offers free financial coaching to low- to middle-income families. She retired two years ago after a 30-year career at a medical device company. She didn't want to just relax, and was led to the book “Encore Adulthood: Boomers on the Edge of Risk, Renewal and Purpose” by U of M Professor Phyl-

lis Moen, who founded UMAC. The program was modeled loosely after similar programs at Harvard and Stanford, Schaefers said.

The Life Course Center program is geared toward those in their 50s through 70s who are winding down careers but aren't ready to simply golf and fish. It is for people who want to learn how to use their career skills for good and leave a legacy of social impact.

Mahtomedi resident Sarah Meek worked in sales and marketing for 30 years. Now that her children are out of the house and her husband won't retire for several years, she wants to use her skills for something she is passionate about. Her midternship was at Be the Match, which was personally significant since she was a stem cell donor for her brother. She helped the organization's donor services with a business plan.

Fellows volunteered in the U of M's “grand challenge” courses on social justice topics — like poverty, world hunger, affordable housing and sensory loss equity. Fellows learn alongside students while also acting as mentors with life experience. They don't earn credit and don't have to take exams or write papers. Colombo said she learned a lot about socioeconomic justice, something that just isn't a perspective in corporate America.

They also learned from the younger students. “They've got such creative ideas and perspectives,” Mattson noted. “I was really struck by how these students have really good perspectives and our future is

Financial Management 4 simple ways to save more for retirement

It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement.

Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts.

4. Reinvest tax returns.

Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account.

Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial.

Saving for retirement is important, and it’s never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for your golden years.

SCHOOL BRIEFS Associate principal announced Mahtomedi Public Schools announced that Justin Hahn will join the district as the new associate principal at the high school beginning July 1. Hahn is currently serving as an assistant principal at Hastings Middle Justin Hahn School. Prior to his current role, he also taught in the social studies department at Hastings High School for 15 years. Hahn shared this about joining Mahtomedi High School: “I'm honored and appreciative for the opportunity to continue my growth as an educator at an outstanding school district like Mahtomedi. I look forward to collaborating with students, staff and community members as we support all students in finding their success.”

The award is given each year to a Mahtomedi Middle School staffer (any teacher, staff member or administrator) who exemplifies the qualities that Bil embodied. Megan Gangl presented Irsfeld with the award and shared the following: “Our current award winner is consistently researching and improving her curriculum to meet the current needs of students. She comes up with unique and creative lessons and activities for the students to teach and rein-

force healthy lifestyle practices. She talks to the students directly and shares the facts. She provides support and direction while getting to know them as individuals with unique needs and backgrounds. In addition to teaching, Ms. Irsfeld is a coach in two sports. The athletes she works with are inspired by her knowledge and her past experience in sports. She helps them set realistic goals and work toward meeting those goals. She works with staff and administration to reach the best outcome for students. On a personal level, she spends time with colleagues and truly listens to them. She is a lifelong community member and has connections with new neighbors and other lifelong community members.

She is also active in the Mahtomedi Hockey Association and has spent many volunteer hours helping to build the program. She has campaigned for her father’s mayoral campaigns, has been a Girl Scout leader and volunteers for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.”

Annual Walk4Water announced

Two middle school students, Ivory Drusch and Lucy Guidinger, will continue
