Hoffman Corner may have buyer; name’s familiar BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

GEM LAKE — Hy-Vee hasn’t given up on the neighborhood after all. The Iowa-based grocer backed out from plans last year to build a mega supermarket in the area, but it’s back with a proposal to build a mega convenience store. The location is Hoffman Corners at County Road E and Highway 61. Owned by Don and Sheila Waldoch, the 2.3-acre parcel has been for sale for years. A luxury car dealership at that address stalled in 2013 when the city nixed a proposal to rezone the piece. Hy-Vee on the other hand, appears to fit the retail-only bill. Plans are preliminary, the Planning Commission has yet to review the application. A slight snafu regarding the property was discussed by the City Council June 19, which was a tip-off HyVee was coming. At issue is a sliver of land, less than a tenth of an acre east of the highway, that technically sits in Vadnais Heights. The piece has to be annexed by Gem Lake before Waldoch can get a clean title under one municipal roof. City Attorney Patrick Kelly was directed by council to draft a resolution in cooperation with the Vadnais Heights city attorney to get the ball rolling on the annexation process. What Vadnais will ask for the tiny parcel is anyone’s guess, but Kelly figures Gem Lake’s neighbor will at least ask for reimbursement of its attorney fees. That could be $3,000 to $5,000, Kelly said, maybe less. Waldoch pays the city of Vadnais Heights about $95 a year in property taxes on the parcel. He expects Vadnais will ask for some compensation for that revenue loss, as well. Hy-Vee is proposing a 10,600-squarefoot “Fast and Fresh” store with a Starbucks on one end and a Market Grill on the other. The store would also have an off-sale wine/liquor area and gas pumps. For comparison, a new Quick Stop is 5,000 square feet, or half that size. The application, submitted June 12, will require an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow liquor and gas pumps. Newspaper man stuffs time capsule with, well, newspapers BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

When the area historical society director ceremoniously opened the time capsule tucked away for almost 80 years in the base of a flag pole, in it were five copies of the White Bear Press. “I'm not shocked,” said Executive Director Sara Hanson, who emceed the official reveal of capsule contents June 21 at Marketfest. After all, it was White Bear Press owner and

publisher Cpt. Warren A. Stickley who packed the copper box and placed it in 1940, with help from the WPA (Works Project Administration), in the limestone base surrounding the Soldier's Memorial flag pole. Stickley, who bought the newspaper in 1923, was a captain in the Spanish American War. He evidently had a soft heart for veterans and loved recording history. In fact, Stickley helped organize the White SEE TIME CAPSULE, PAGE 8A
