Making a difference with T-shirts
Sailing school starts late, pledges safe environment BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
Sailors don’t have quite as much control of their outcomes as athletes in other sports do, but that’s OK with Kate Cox, who runs the local sailing school. “What I love most about racing, and sailing in general, is the feeling that whatever happens isn’t always up to you,” she reflects. “You can only
control the race up to a certain point; beyond that, it’s Nature’s call. “It makes you feel connected to the wind, water, weather, whatever is going on above.” Even better, she said, is sharing the experience with your crew or skipper, usually a close friend or family member. Scenic Lake Links Trail bridge crossing Water flows under a covered bridge as a group of bicyclists travel along the Lake Links Trail in Mahtomedi. Members of the Lake Links Association have been working with state, county and city officials to complete remaining segments of a trail system to enable bicyclists to safely navigate around the perimeter of White Bear Lake. Organizers have scheduled the 4th Annual Lake Links Ride Around the Lake for Saturday, July 18. According to the lakelinks.net website, this year’s event will feature physical distancing and live updates on progress and plans along the route. Riders with smartphones will also be able to take part in a live demonstration of the new Mahtomedi history spur web-based phone app.

Jeff Loeks believes in the power of a T-shirt. When a woman he knew in hospice care passed away, her children told Loeks their mother wanted him to have $1,000 for his Special Teams Charity. The dying woman appreciated the work Loeks and wife Racheal were doing to help the homeless, among other causes. So the White Bear Township couple put their head (and hearts) together and decided to spend the money on T-shirts. The simple message: “Most people are good.” It’s the very same message his adoptive father preaches to his congregation in north Minneapolis and one that has stayed with Loeks. His adoptive parents, by the way, are African American. “We want people to realize that we really don’t hate each other. That people are good, especially people in law enforcement and health care who are truly making a difference,” maintained Loeks, a former emergency room technician who now works security at Regions Hospital. When the shirts were delivered, the first thing Loeks did was return to his old neighborhood to give one to a woman buy-
