Moonstruck: On 50th anniversary of lunar landing, residents remember mankind’s giant leap BY ELIZABETH CALLEN STAFF WRITER FILE | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Water Gremlin’s sign

Water Gremlin’s testing extension request denied The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) announced July 12 it has denied granting Water Gremlin an extension to test its pollution control equipment. As a result, Water Gremlin is subject to a $500 per day fi ne until it has completed its testing. “Water Gremlin has had more than enough time to get its pollution control equipment fully operational and tested,” said MPCA Commissioner Laura Bishop. “Water Gremlin promised in its agreement with the MPCA that its pollution control equipment would be operational and tested within 30 days after installation. Almost 75 days later, the MPCA and the residents of White Bear Lake and Gem Lake are still waiting.” In January 2019, the MPCA and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) investigated community exposures to an industrial solvent called trichloroethylene (TCE) used by Water Gremlin, a manufacturer in White Bear Township. The MPCA’s investigation showed that Water Gremlin failed to report accurate emission data for more than 15 years. In addition, Water Gremlin exceeded permitted TCE limits and exposed the surrounding neighborhoods to TCE levels above MDH’s

Saturday, July 20, marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. On that day, in 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle, which carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made contact with the surface of the moon while Michael Collins piloted the command module, Columbia, in lunar orbit. As Armstrong stepped out onto the moon, he uttered what have since become immortal words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Steve Emert, of White Bear Lake, was 15 at the time and “very excited” about the moon landing. He and his family, he said, “like many others, watched everything on CBS because we felt that Walter Cronkite, accompanied by astronaut Wally Schirra, was the best reporter for the Apollo program.” Digital video recorders didn’t exist in the 1960s, but tape recorders, at least, did. Emert said he tape-recorded the entire special leading up to the landing, in addition to the broadcast of the landing and the moonwalk itself. “I sure wish we had video recording capabilities in those days,” he added. Emert was one of approximately 600 million viewers who tuned into to watch Armstrong’s—and later Aldrin’s—moonwalk. “I remember the confusion created by CBS’s animation showing the (lunar module) landing before it actually did, and also Mr. Cronkite’s confusion about when exactly Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon because he said he was testing being able to get back up on the ladder.” SEE MOON LANDING, PAGE 8A
