City places temporary moratorium on cannabis business

The sale of cannabis is now illegal within the city of White Bear Lake until January 2025, as city council unanimously decided to place an interim moratorium on the sale of cannabis. The penalty for violating the moratorium is a misdemeanor.

In response to recent state legislation, the moratorium is a continuation of the city’s current moratorium on the sale of low-dose edible cannabinoid products that was approved in September 2022.

William Kent Krueger begins his day with a cup of dark french roast coffee and 3 hours of writing. With this amount of dedication, it is no wonder he has continued to turn out novels that win both awards and the hearts of his readers.

During Krueger’s childhood his father, a high school English teacher, helped him fall in love with literature. When he was just 18 years old, he was introduced to the works of Ernest Hemingway. From there, he decided he would write the next Great American Novel.

After a midlife crisis and

research into popular literature genres, he began his fruitful journey into the world of mystery.

As Krueger puts it, “It’s a genre whose appeal cuts across all socio-economic levels, all age demographics, [and] all ethnic groups.”

Following a four year learning curve, he finished his first published book, ‘Iron Lake’. This was the beginning of his most famous Cork O’Connor series, which now includes 19 books and a loyal following.

As a full-time writer, Krueger could not imagine his life any other way. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer,” he said. “There was never

anything else I really wanted to be.”

Cities were given the authority to restrict the operations of cannabis businesses after the Minnesota Legislature legalized the use of marijuana for adults,

The new law also required the creation of the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) which was established on July 1 and is meant to work with local cities to develop model ordinances and reasonable restrictions on the time, place and manner of cannabis business.

The ordinance enacted by White Bear Lake will allow city staff to conduct studies during the moratorium period to better understand their next steps.

“Given the uncertainty regarding all of this new legislation and the lack of model ordinances yet to be developed by OCM, I do recommend that the city council does adopt an interim ordinance imposing the moratorium to protect the health, safety and general welfare of White Bear Lake residents, business, and citizens until we can further study this,” City manager Lindy Crawford said.

Mayor Dan Louismet supports the moratorium and is disappointed how the state legislature handled this issue.

“I think the state legislature should be ashamed of themselves for passing a broad and sweeping law and setting an effective date that is so quick before the regulatory bodies can develop the rules and necessary backfilling of regs [regulations] to figure out how we’re going to deal with this,” Louismet said.

The shop in question falls within this distance, but due to the vagueness of the state law, Jones does not know how city staff and the police department are going to deal with this.

“Managing it is turning out to be

not so easy for multiple levels of staff,” Jones said. So, therefore, like the mayor said, take a breath, a step back and just wait.”

During a July 25 public hearing

Solomon Haile, owner of Summit Liquor, expressed concern that liquor and tobacco stores in neighboring cities can sell low-dose THC products while he is currently unable to.

In response, City Attorney Troy Gilchrist says the city is working on a licensing ordinance to go into effect before the expiration of the current moratorium Sept. 27, 2023 on the sale of low-dose edible cannabinoid products. This will allow liquor

stores and tobacco shops to sell edible cannabinoid products.

“So that’s coming our way relatively soon,” Walsh said. “We’ll get on the same footing as our neighbors at least if we move quickly on that piece.”  Crawford said letters were sent to tobacco and liquor license holders in the city discussing the proposed ordinance regarding low-dose edible cannabinoid products.

Using marijuana in public draws scrutiny of city

White Bear Lake —The control of public use of marijuana will be one of the provisions of a new city ordinance controlling adult marijuana use.

City Attorney Troy Gilchrist says public marijuana use is currently not prohibited in the city. Gilchrist is urging the White Bear Lake city council to look for some sort of “level playing field”

when it comes to public marijuana usage and the current laws regarding public usage of tobacco and alcohol.

Mayor Dan Louismet agrees and thinks a future ordinance regarding the public use of marijuana should search for a level of parity with alcohol and tobacco products.

“We currently prohibit the use of alcohol in a public park and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t prevent the use of marijuana in a public park,” Louismet said. “I think that makes good sense.”

Inflation is slowing

The Feds just raised interest rates a quarter percent, hoping to get inflation under 3%. The side effects are rippling through the economy. There are some signs that food prices are coming down. However, not gasoline, dining out, and perhaps most important of all, not mortgage costs which have doubled. There are no immediate signs of declining.

Financial experts, lenders and real estate people tell us we should not spend more than 30% of our annual income on housing costs. Higher interest rates have a big effect on the cost of your next home if you are planning to buy.

For example, in the metro area if you were going to buy a $400,000 home and the mortgage interest was 3%, that would cost you $1,686 per month and your income would have to be at least $67,440.

Now the interest is at 6%. That would bring the monthly payment to $2,398 and your income would have to be over $95,920.

About the Town

A big issue before you make a decision.

There is a shortage of homes on the market and the prices have gone up rather dramatically after the COVID crisis and inflation factors. What are young people who want to buy a home supposed to do? If you are single, you may continue to live with your parents. If you are married, maybe there is an apartment in your parent’s or a friend’s basement. Some singles are joining together with others, sometimes four or five, to rent a home.

I have also learned of some apartments and condos with as low as 500 square feet that are available to rent or lease.

It has been a dream for many to own a home because they grow in value. With inflation getting under control, I have talked to so-called experts and they tell me prices are not going down. They will still creep up with the short supply. Many home sales find the prices being bid up $10,000 and $20,000 more than the asking price just because of shortage and demand.

As a result, people aren’t willing to sell. They are staying where they are. When interest rates go back down, that may be another story.

Caught in coin counting

The other day I took my piggy bank to US Bank where they have a coin counting machine available. There was a sign indicating it was out of order so I inquired when it might be repaired. They said a part was ordered, but they weren’t sure. I innocently asked what happened to it and the staff member said you just won’t believe what we find people are trying to run through the machine. They said it’s not only odd coins, but recently they had teeth caught in it. I never thought of a piggy bank as a place to save teeth. I didn’t know what they meant by this, whether it was a gold-filled one or a child’s tooth that they hadn’t put under their pillow for a reward. I had to try another bank.

Showboat Relocated

I’m sure many of you, like Kathy and I, remember the Minnesota Centennial Showboat docked at St. Paul’s Harriet Island where the University of Minnesota theater group put on productions during the summers. It was fun to go there, the plays were good, and it made for a wonderful evening on the Mississippi River.

A couple weeks ago when we were in Winona with our daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Chuck, they took us up the Mississippi River to just below lock 5 where the old showboat is moored at a Wisconsin docking facility. It’s just sitting there.

What happened? Well, the U of M theater was able to get a new showboat in December, 2000. The partnership would be with the city of St. Paul Riverfront Development, the Padelford Packet Boat Co. and the University of Minnesota. The construction began the following spring in Greenville, Mississippi. The new showboat arrived at Harriet Island on April 17, 2002. The final curtain call was in the 2016 summer season.

The William A. Thompson Dredge Museum hoped to raise enough money to purchase the old showboat and Dave Belz and Bob Harris set out to raise funds to buy the boat and transport it from St. Paul to Winona.

The plan was to have it moored at the new updated Levee Park in Winona and it would be a venue for area arts, culture and events. The showboat arrived in Winona in 2019 and it looks like not enough money was raised to utilize it for that intent. Therefore, it continues to be idled below lock and dam 5. I cannot confirm, but it’s estimated that it cost them $60,000 to purchase it and have it delivered to Winona. Maybe someone will come along and help bring the old showboat back to life.

At St. Thomas, I juggled both academics and being on the track team all four years. As a junior, I spent the whole year designing and editing the student literary newspaper— The Summit Avenue Review— with nine other fellow students. My next great adventure is graduate school, where I am studying creative writing, editing and publishing.

But first, how did I get here?

I grew up in Wyoming– the city, not the state. It is a quiet, small town just about an hour North of the Twin Cities. My family has lived in the same house since before I was born. We have never moved, nor do I think we ever will. I lived

the typical small-town life. I went to elementary school two miles down the road from my house, I played with my older sister and the kids who lived next door, and my favorite place to hang out was the Dairy Queen which was a quick bike ride away from where I lived.

My childhood was consumed with ice cream, friends, school and sports. I did gymnastics from the ages of four to fifteen. From the age of eleven, I spent twentyfour hours at practice each week perfecting my salute and pointing my toes until my feet hurt. When I turned thirteen, my focus started to shift from gymnastics to track. I did both sports until I was fifteen when I ultimately had to pick between them. Track won by a landslide. I attended Forest Lake High School where I graduated in 2019. In my four years on the track team, I gained multiple All-Conference and All-State titles and walked away with two school records.

After I graduated from college, I spent my first month of summer reading ten books, moving out of my college apartment, and trying to learn how to golf. At the

beginning of July, I joined the Press Publications team to grow as a writer. They are the perfect fit for me. Everyone is passionate about what they do, and it reflects in their work. I am at my desk from Monday to Friday and spend my weekends sitting on my front porch trying to finish yet another book on my never-ending “to-be-read” list or visiting my friends in the cities.

I have always had a passion for storytelling and writing. It has been something I have enjoyed since I was in elementary school. During my free time, instead of messing around with the cute boys in my sixth-grade class, I would sit in the reading corner trying to finish a book before time was up. My diary was filled with poorly written stories. It still is. But I know that these experiences I have had growing up, in college and at Press Publications will be invaluable to me, wherever I end up.

Response to letters

In response to DiCesare’s letter (July 19), Paslawski did not explicitly identify herself as a conservative, a theist, or as someone against COVID-19 vaccines. In order to illustrate the logical inconsistencies of Raeker’s letter (July 5) Paslawski plays devil’s advocate until the end when she identifies herself as pro-life. Both DiCesare and Raeker try to peddle the idea that being pro-life is synonymous with being both a theist and a conservative, but this is increasingly misleading. Likewise, Paslawski’s example about COVID-19 indeed fit the bill of the government telling us what to do with our bodies, motives aside.

The crux of the issue in this thread has been whether human life has inherent value or not. DiCesare and Raeker both suggest that it doesn’t, but what premises led them to this conclusion, and where are the logical parameters to keep vulnerable groups (ethnic minorities, disabled, females) from being singled out as unworthy of life?

DiCesare’s conclusion that abortion only affects a few people is completely wrong. We’re all connected whether

we like it or not. To the unborn life that abortion is imposed upon (and to all those people who otherwise would have seen, met, befriended this person, married them, etc.) the abortion made all the difference in the world. Likewise for the parents,who are now on a different timeline and trajectory, physically and psychologically.

What sort of concept of the common good could we possibly deduce and what type of culture would develop from an ideology that doesn’t stand up for the weak, or has an increasingly exclusive idea of who’s worthy of the state’s protection? Any true concept of justice is not compatible with this ‘might makes right,’ ‘ends justify the means’ mentality.

Surely we are made for more than just the worship of big business and big government. If a single person being aborted doesn’t matter how could multiple people dying from COVID-19 matter? Our lives are not purely utilitarian. Life is a gift, no one should need to plead their case for existing.

• T he Walmart store in the 800 block of County Road E on June 28 reported four females for placing $1,353.45 worth of merchandise into reusable shopping bags and passing all points of sale. Loss prevention personnel were able to briefly stop the suspects outside the store and recover the merchandise. A Keep Our Kops Safe alert was issued, after the suspects left in two different vehicles.

• T he Walmart store reported another shoplifting incident June 29, after a suspect switched tags on merchandise and thwarted efforts by loss prevention personnel to stop the theft.

Out of state man asleep at the wheel tagged for DWI

WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — A Greensboro, North Carolina man, 35, faces up to one year in jail and/or a maximum fine of $3,000 for gross misdemeanor refusal to submit to a breath test, after being pulled over for suspicion of DWI. He is also been charged with misdemeanor DWI, which carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/ or a maximum fine of $1,000.

At approximately 7:55 p.m. July 16, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the BP gas station, 5960 Highway 61, on a report of a male slumped over in a running motor vehicle at a fuel pump. Deputies approached the parked vehicle and checked to make sure the occupant in the driver’s seat was still breathing, which he was. Deputies then knocked on the window and awoke the driver, who exhibited a blank stare with bloodshot and watery eyes.

After being identified, the driver said he had come from a social gathering and had consumed a single beer. He then began rambling about topics unrelated to anything. The defendant agreed to

• A water main break causing the road to fail was reported June 21 on White Pine Lane. Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies summoned the public works department to the scene. Wildwood Avenue residents reported two kayaks missing June 24 and wanted to know whether deputies had impounded them because they had been left on the beach. Deputies advised the complainant that the sheriff’s office doesn’t impound kayaks left on beaches.

Dellwood

• A D ellwood Avenue resident on June 25 reported a possible water main break, causing leakage through his driveway. D eputies arrested a motorist for DWI June 28 near Dellwood Avenue and Peninsula Road, following a traffic stop for unsafe driving.

Grant

• Residents in the 11000 block of Grenelefe Avenue N. reported their mailbox struck by a vehicle June 22. The next day, residents in the 9000 block of 75th Street N. also reported their mailbox damaged.

Mahtomedi

• A Shamrock Drive resident reported his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway was rummaged through overnight June 21-22, and $10 to $20 in cash stolen. All other items, such as hockey gear, were left behind.

• A St. Paul man, 20, and a Brooklyn Center woman, 21, were banned from the Kwik Trip in the 3200 block of Highway 61 on July 2 for shoplifting from the store.

• A resident in the 100 block of Mayfair Road reported criminal damage to his vehicle and siding July 3 by thrown rocks.

• A rea Mechanical reported their work van damaged in the 3200 block of Fanum Road at 4:00 a.m. July 4, according to surveillance video. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.

• A L oretta Lane resident reported a motor vehicle tampered with overnight June 22-23.

• A motorist was cited June 23 near Wildwood Road and Birchwood Road for failure to provide proof of insurance and verbally warned for expired tabs, following a traffic stop by deputies on patrol who observed the vehicle displaying April 2023 registration. After the driver admitted to being recently cited for no insurance, he was made to legally park the vehicle and seek other transportation.

• A bicycle rider was arrested at 1:55 a.m. June 24 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue, after deputies observed the bike traveling without headlights. However, when deputies flashed their emergency lights and gave a short burst from their siren, the cyclist refused to stop until deputies physically detained him.

• A M innesota motorist was cited June 24 near Hickory Street and Warner Avenue for speeding 44 mph in a 30 mph zone and for failure to provide proof of insurance, after deputies clocked the vehicle on radar after it passed them. During the traffic stop, the driver presented expired proof of insurance, and the vehicle smelled of marijuana. The driver admitted to the source of the pot odor and acknowledged his speedometer was not working properly. Deputies searched the vehicle and found paraphernalia before releasing the driver.

• A dog-on-dog biting incident was reported June 26 on Wedgewood Drive.

• A wedding ring was reported stolen from a memory care facility on East Avenue June 28.

• A package was reported stolen June 28 from a Briarwood Avenue residence.

• D eputies collected unwanted firearms from the 1200 block of Birch Pond Trail June 27 and took them away for destruction.

• A L ittle Canada man reported his motorcycle vandalized June 30 in the 2200 block of 5th Court.

• A Chisago City man reported being involved in a hit and run accident at 10:16 p.m. June 30 in the 4600 block of Centerville Road, during which his vehicle was hit from behind by a motorcycle. When the victim stopped at the side of the road to inspect his broken tail light, he was assaulted by five motorcyclists. A witness provided dashcam video of the incident.

• D eputies on routine patrol at 2:52 a.m. July 4 at the intersection of Highway 61 and Buffalo Street observed an abandoned vehicle parked in the intersection, in the lane of traffic and precariously close to the railroad track. Deputies had the hazardous vehicle towed.

Theft prevention for Kia, Hyundai owners

The White Bear Lake police department is distributing steering wheel locks to owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021. Vehicles must have steel key and turnto-start ignitions. Owners must provide proof of residency and insurance. There is a limited supply of locks available. New fire truck to blaze into town in 2025

A new rescue fire truck will be parked in the garage at the White Bear Lake fire station in 2025.

Fire Chief Greg Peterson said rescue truck #923 has been in service since 2003 and has reached its expected 20-year life span. Its replacement is part of the Capital Improvement Plan and Financial Management Plan in 2025. He noted prices for fire trucks have significantly increased over the last few years.

“The first truck the council approved me to purchase five years ago was about $550,000 and now the same truck is going for $944,000,” Peterson said. “Each year we’re seeing significant price increases. And so we obviously need to replace the fleet and keep it up to up to par and working for another 20 years.”

Peterson noted that another dynamic that has developed over the years is the delay in getting a truck. “It used to be less than a year and currently, they average about 24 to 36 months before we can even get our hands on the vehicle,” he said.

According to Peterson, the city is a member of the Houston-Galveston (HGAC) Cooperative. MacQueen, the local vendor of Pierce Manufacturing, Inc., is the preferred vendor through the HGAC Cooperative for

the purchase of the new truck for $944,000. There is a provision within their purchase agreement to purchase the current rescue truck via trade-in at a value of $60,000.

The final cost to the city for the new truck would be $884,000. Payment for the purchase would be due in 2025 which aligns with the Capital Improvement Plan, Financial Management Plan and 2023 adopted budget.

“The city’s mechanics enjoy working on the ladder truck and are impressed with how it is built,” Peterson stated. “Having a similar rescue truck with the fleet would be beneficial for the fire department and public works mechanics.”

Council Member Kevin Edberg asked Peterson how many miles are put on the truck and how many times a year does it go out on calls.

“We don’t travel a great distance, but usually around 70,000 to 80,000 miles over those 20 years,” Peterson responded. “Currently the rescue truck is kind of the backup role. So, this will become the primary truck that goes on every call. We do closer to 1,000 fire calls a year. But it also goes on accident scenes and so on.”

Mayor Dan Lousimet noted getting the truck is essential for the safety of the community. “It’s an essential piece of equipment for the fire department, and it’s time to replace it.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the City of Mahtomedi (“City”) will hold a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers, Mahtomedi City Hall, 600 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi, MN, to solicit input from members of the public related to the potential adoption of an interim ordinance (moratorium) prohibiting the establishment or operation of a cannabis business within the City of Mahtomedi until January 1, 2025, or such earlier time as the interim ordinance is rescinded. A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING THE TITLE AND SUMMARY APPROVAL OF AN INTERIM ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING A STUDY AND IMPOSING A MORATORIUM ON THE OPERATION OF CANNABIS BUSINESSES

WHEREAS, the City of White Bear Lake City Council may, pursuant to Ordinance No. 83-6-666, adopt a title and summary of a proposed ordinance to be published in lieu of lengthy entire ordinances, and WHEREAS, in addition to adopting a title and ordinance summary, the Council shall direct the City Clerk to:

1. Have available for inspection during regular office hours a copy of the entire ordinance.

2. Post a copy of the entire ordinance at the Public Library

3. Receive an affidavit of publication of the title and summary from the official newspaper.

AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING A STUDY AND IMPOSING A MORATORIUM ON THE OPERATION OF CANNABIS BUSINESSES

On July 25, 2023, the City Council of the City of White Bear Lake adopted Ordinance No. 23-07-2063, an ordinance authorizing a study and imposing a moratorium on the operation of Cannabis Businesses, as that term is defined in the ordinance. The interim ordinance declares a moratorium on the establishment and operation of a Cannabis Business within the City and authorizes a study regarding the adoption or amendment of reasonable restrictions on the time, place, and manner of the operation of Cannabis Businesses, and other allowable local regulations. The moratorium is effective the first day of publication and will remain in effect until January 1, 2025. The full text of the ordinance is available for inspection at White Bear Lake City Hall during regular business hours and has been posted to the City’s website.

FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of White Bear Lake City Council hereby directs the City Clerk to provide the inspection and publication requirements as listed above.

Painters out “en plein air”

This week, be on the lookout for artists setting up to paint outdoor scenes throughout White Bear Lake and surrounding areas. White Bear Center for the Arts' Into Nature Plein Air Competition runs from Aug. 1 through 10.

The contest is open to artists of all skill levels. Participants will have the opportunity to show their

work in WBCA’s Ford Family Gallery during the week of August 17, and then selected work will move to the Exhibition Hall for the month of September. Nationally celebrated plein air artist Joshua Cunningham at the helm as this year’s judge. He will award $4750 worth of prizes during the Into Nature Community Reception on Thursday, August 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. He will also discuss his

experience in plein air, as well as his selection process for the competition.

“The most beautiful part of plein air painting is actually its accessibility for everybody,” says Cunningham. “All you need is the willingness to go outside with as little as a piece of paper and a pen, or a paintbrush and a canvas and some paint, and connect through that medium to the world around us.”

Salon to open in former Chef Hot Hands building

Hugo resident Christina Luger has opened Connor James Salon in the former Chef Hot Hands building in

downtown Centerville.

For the past three years, Luger has rented space at a salon in White Bear

Lake. She was looking for somewhere she could call her own in the Hugo area and stumbled across the former Chef Hot Hands space because she knows the building’s owners.

“I’ve always dreamed of having my own salon,” she said. “It’s been in the back of my head … it’s always just been that dream.”

The salon has space for six stylists. Luger also plans to bring in a massage

therapist and an esthetician.

The conversion to a salon included renovating the commercial kitchen space. Walls were torn down and new walls have been constructed, flooring has been installed and the electrical and plumbing is redone.

Connor James Salon is located at 7087 Centerville Road, Centerville.

Dennis,16, is a polite and soft-spoken young man. Many people describe him as cooperative, helpful, and kind. Dennis makes it point to go out of his way to do a random act of kindness for a friend or stranger every day – whether it’s lending someone a pen or pencil in class or helping a stranger while out and about. Dennis excels in school and would like to be a meteorologist and storm chaser in the future. In his free time, he likes to play Magic: The Gathering and basketball with his peers. Dennis loves food and is always down for a trip to a buffet (Pizza Ranch is his favorite!).

Makaila,12, is outgoing with a big personality! Makaila enjoys making friends and having conversations with peers and adults. She has a huge heart and is very artistic and creative. Makaila enjoys being helpful around the home, especially when it comes to caring for animals, as she dreams of becoming a vet someday. She likes to stay active and loves to spend hours at the local park. In her free time, you will find Makaila working on arts and craft projects, playing with her Pop-Its collection, completing word search puzzles, or learning a new board game. She also enjoys reading, and proudly reports that she was able to read 50 books over summer break last year. Dennis and Makaila prefer a home with pets. They will do best with caregivers who can provide structure and routine. Following adoption, Dennis and Makaila need to maintain contact with their older sibling.

a loving husband, dad and papa, age 66, of Centerville, formerly of White Bear Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a courageous 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer on July 27, 2023. Brian was the former 4th generation owner of Preisler Company in White Bear Lake. He enjoyed time working on his classic cars, traveling, and spending time with family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lois Preisler and father-in-law, Harold C. Lost in the wild weather we’ve experienced in the past two weeks is the noteworthy return of precipitation. For the month of July I totaled 4.31 inches, which is just a third of an inch below normal. From the period July 19 to July 28, I totaled 2.99 inches. Despite the recent rains the lake level of White Bear Lake is down from 923.41 feet to 922.67 feet since May 31. We also experienced some of the hottest and most humid days of the summer last week. Being Minnesota, it was short-lived and we enjoyed a very comfortable weekend with highs in the 70’s, leading to friends visiting from Florida to comment how “cold” it was. I took away their “I grew up in Minnesota card.” Garden update: I’ve been harvesting tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Friend Chris has eggplant and neighbor Kirk has been passing out his cucumbers to neighbors.

Bear alum set for 4th season in Red Wings organization

Heading into his fourth season of professional hockey, Wyatt Newpower is ever hopeful of getting that call from the big club, the Detroit Red Wings.

“You’re always one injury away from getting called up, or one stretch of good hockey, so consistency is arguably the most important skill in hockey,” said the 25-year-old defenseman from White Bear Lake.

“I feel good about the foundation I have built for myself over the last three seasons. I have been able to grow into a role that I feel I can succeed in and I enjoy.”

Newpower signed his fourth one-year, two-way minor league contract with the Red Wings in midJuly. Two-way means the salary is based on what level the player is assigned to play.

Signed after his college career at University of Connecticut, Newpower has played one season with the Cleveland Monsters, then two seasons with Grand Rapids (Michigan) Griffins, both in  the American Hockey League. In 138 games in the AHL, he has compiled 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) and a plus six rating. He’s likely to return to Grand Rapids this season.

“I have had a blast my first three years professionally. I just got married two weeks

ago, and having my wife, Catherine, with me along on the ride has been so much fun,” Newpower said.

“Along with the crazy amount of great hockey players there are, I’ve met some lifelong friends already. It’s a lot of fun getting to travel all over the country and meet people from all over the world.”

As a defenseman, he is “not much of a highlight-reel scorer,” but one memorable game was notching a goal, assist, and win for Grand Rapids in his first game against his former team, the Monsters. “I’ve been in some good fights and fun stuff like that,” he added, “but overall just have had a lot of fun, and I am really looking forward to going into my fourth season, looking to make a big impact and hopefully get a shot at the big leagues.”

Newpower, 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, played four varsity seasons for the Bears, graduating in 2016, and four seasons with Connecticut. The Hugo native was named best defenseman in the Hockey East Conference his senior year at UConn.

Local Olympic sailor gears up for Paris 2024 games

As Shoreview native Lara Dallman-Weiss prepares to participate in her second Olympic games in a year, she returns to where it all began, the White Bear Yacht Club.

Dallman-Weiss started sailing at the age of six and has early memories of spending time with her dad John out on the boat tagging along with him while he was racing. John taught himself how to sail and is now the race officer on White Bear Lake. John and his wife Sue currently live in Hugo.

Dallman-Weiss started out taking lessons at White Bear Lake Sailing School and was sailing on “Optis”, also known as optimist sailing boats, which are small starter boats intended for kids and teens learning how to sail. The Optis only hold one person, and this is something Dallman-Weiss did not particularly enjoy during her initial time learning how to sail.

“Part of what I love about the sport is you sail with other people, so it wasn’t until I was put in a boat with another person that I really loved it,” DallmanWeiss said.

Dallman-Weiss is set to do what she has grown to love at the 2024 Paris Olympics, sailing as a pair with Stu McNay, the decorated four-time Olympic sailor, and her new partner.

Sailing is a unique sport and Dallman-Weiss believes it takes a lot of time for people to develop at the highest level because there’s so much that goes into it.

Dallman-Weiss remembers dedicating herself to the sport when she attended Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. After graduating, she worked in a sail loft, worked in sailing media, and sailed on every single boat she could all over the world. She thinks that these wide-ranging experiences helped her acquire the skill set she needed to become an Olympic sailor.

Dallman-Weiss speaks to an audience of WBYC members, sailing families, and supporters July 26. She discussed her experiences growing up in the White Bear sailing school, her 2020 Tokyo experience, and her 2024 Paris expectations.

“You learn all these different things that are applicable when you’re Olympic sailing,” DallmanWeiss said.

Reflecting on her experience in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Dallman-Weiss is eager to feel the Olympic spirit again in 2024.

“The Olympic spirit is a real thing,” DallmanWeiss said. “Being part of Team USA, meeting other athletes, having access to watch any sport at any time of the day, and competing against some of the best sailors in the world at the highest level, that is an experience I want again.”

Up until now, the 470 (the boats are 470 centimeters long) sailing event at the Olympics has been gender split, meaning women could only pair up with other women in the “women’s 470” and men could only pair up with other men in the “men’s 470”. In 2024, it will be a mixed event.

It’ll be an entirely different strategy for both Dallman-Weiss and McNay in 2024 because she

has always been used to sailing with a smaller female and McNay was used to sailing with a much larger male counterpart. Although it has been an adjustment and learning process for DallmanWeiss, she is excited about the opportunity to sail with McNay.

“He is incredible,” Dallman-Weiss said. “We’re both just chasing the Olympic medal.”

U.S. Olympic teams do not receive government funding like many of their competitors from other countries do. Sailing does not have access to as much funds as more popular sports such as track and field or gymnastics.

“That leaves it all to us,” Dallman-Weiss said. “It’s basically a full-time business to manage funding.”

The pair will be looking to fund their Olympic campaign which involves funds for coaching, airfare, lodging, and boat maintenance/shipping via donations from people in the sailing community and businesses.

To aspiring young sailors, Dallman-Weiss encourages them to reach out and find a mentor to answer questions and guide them through their journey. As she did, Dallman-Weiss encourages young people in sailing to follow their passion.

“I always say follow your gut,” Dallman-Weiss said. “If sailing’s something you love doing, keep doing it.”

Bears’ softball slugger transfers to North Florida

Jordyn Meyer, former White Bear Lake softball standout, has transferred to North Florida University after one redshirt season with her first college choice, Creighton.

“It felt like North Florida was a better fit for me,” said Meyer, a catcher, adding that she’s delighted to be teaming up with Allison Benning, a close friend who pitched for Bears arch rival Stillwater. Benning is transferring from Oregon. The North Florida Ospreys were 29-23 in 2023.

Jeff Conrad, North Florida coach, lauded Meyer as “a really unique athlete,” in a press release. “Her size, at close to 6-1, really jumps out at you … Behind the plate, she is very fluid, which I

attribute to her also being a competitive figure skater.”  Meyer doubled as an accomplished skater throughout her school years.

As a senior Meyer belted eight homers, including a three-run shot at state, and knocked in 26 runs, while sparkling as an infielder, earning secondteam All-Metro honors and helping the Bears win conference and section titles and place fourth at state.

She played mostly shortstop for the Bears. Catcher is her true position, but the Bears had Heidi Barber catching for her sister, ace pitcher Chloe Barber. Chloe is headed for Wichita State, and Heidi, who has one season left with the Bears, has committed to Connecticut.

Mahtomedi senior archer is once again national meet champ

Edna Siniff, 86, of Mahtomedi won her division in archery at the National Senior Games in Pittsburgh for the third time. She scored 697 the first day, and slipped to 640 the second day, when she discovered her site was off and it took a while to fix it. Siniff previously won nationals in Minneapolis and Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s held every two years. She qualified for nationals at the state level each year.

“I call it an endurance event,” Siniff said about archery. “We start at 8:30 in the morning and it lasts until 3:30 each day. It’s exhausting.”

They shoot 90 arrows, 30 each from 60, 50 and 40 yards. Siniff, who took up archery at age 75, competes weekly at A1 Archery in Hudson, Wisconsin.

“Archery is a social event,” she said. “It’s also one of the best exercises that

a senior can do. And it’s a nice quiet sport.” The National Senior Games draw thousands of athletes from around

the world each year. Siniff said she’s heard that it’s the largest sports event, in terms of number of participants and events, in the world.
