Girls welcomed in local Cub Scout packs BY JANICE COLLOVA PRESS INTERN
Some Cub Scout leaders were not surprised when the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced last summer that packs could choose to welcome girls. In fact, the announcement was anticipated. “I wasn’t surprised, because the district let us know that it seemed like we were going in that direction,” said Dan Celotta, Committee Chair of Cub Pack 692 in Lino Lakes. Brian Peterson, Committee Chair of Cub Pack 432 in Centerville, was also hearing “higher-up” Scout leaders talk about the possibility of girls joining. Both chairs had noticed girls in their communities informally participate in Scout activities in the past. Not only was the BSA’s announcement anticipated, it was welcomed. While girls were still allowed to participate in Scout activities, they did not officially earn awards, achievements and ranks. Celotta recalled one particular girl who did the same activities to earn an award as the pack’s official members but watched everyone else receive something “tangible” while she received nothing. “It didn’t make much sense to her or anybody else,” Celotta recalled. Now that girls can register as Cub Scouts, they can officially be awarded for their achievements. Yet welcoming girls in Scouts has not happened overnight. In fact, so far only 32 packs in the area, including Celotta’s, have welcomed girls under the early adopter program. The Northern Star Council, which administers to packs mostly in the Metro and central Minnesota, decided to not let all packs that chose to, welcome girls immediately. Instead, beginning this past March, the council allowed only packs that had applied to be “early adopter” packs welcome girls. What these packs learn about welcoming girls into their communities, the Council will apply when more packs welcome girls for the official 2018-2019 program year in order to make the introduction to the program the best it can be. In a sense, the early adopter program works like a transitional pilot program. The early adopter program will also be applied to Boy Scouts when that organization begins welcoming girls in February 2019 under the changed name “Scouts, BSA.”

HOUSTON — A White Bear grad is officially headed into space. Last Friday, NASA announced the names of the nine astronauts who will travel to the International Space Station from U.S. soil for the first time since the space shuttle retired in 2011. Among them is Josh Cassada, White Bear Lake Area
High School Class of '91. Cassada was featured in the White Bear Press January 2016 when he returned to his alma mater before giving a presentation at the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum of Natural History.
