Women tackle Alzheimer’s one down at a time BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

Two teams of women face off every year in the metro for a serious game of flag football. They call themselves the Blondes vs. Brunettes and play for one cause: to inspire fundraising, awareness and action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. A White Bear Lake woman, Breanna (Olson) Schafer, co-founded Blondes vs. Brunettes in Minnesota after her mother, Chris Olson, was diagnosed with onset of Alzheimer’s. Schafer, still Olson at the time, was working on the east coast when she got the news and became a “long distance caregiver.”

“I felt compelled to be a voice for my mom. There was a stigma associated with the disease in 2007 and she felt people were treating her differently,” Schafer recalled. The young woman reached out to a Washington, DC chapter where she was living “to do something about the disease.” That’s when Schafer learned about a female flag football fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association called Blondes vs. Brunettes. “I showed up for tryouts and joined Team Brunette,” recalled Schafer. “I met remarkable people who became like family. We raised more than $100,000 each season to support local Alzheimer’s chapters.” SEE ALZHEIMER’S, PAGE 8A

More paramedics mean daytime 911 calls covered BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

Olympians get warm Heritage Days welcome home

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Four more firefighters/paramedics will be responding to 911 calls during daytime hours, helping to cover a population of about 39,000. The added city employees will cover gaps in coverage, keeping response time as short as possible by avoiding calls to outside departments because no one could answer. Eventually, the city wants a total of 12 full-time firefighters/paramedics on the payroll. Their job description includes both fire and medical duties for more efficiency. An increase in ambulance revenues over 2018 projections along with savings from the dispatch conversion to Ramsey County will offset the cost of the hires in this year’s budget, noted City Manager Ellen Hiniker. There will be an impact on the 2019 budget as well, which will require a 10 to 12 percent hike in ambulance rates and about $95,000 from the general fund levy. The budgetary impact of adding four firefighters/paramedics Sept. 1 will be about $125,500 in 2018. In 2019, an added
