Wig care revives self-confidence

Janine Panek of Lino Lakes was not satisfied with the free wig she received from the hospital during her chemo treatment. She even had the wig custom cut twice. Even then, she was not entirely satisfied.

“I kept trying (the wig) on thinking, ‘I don't like it, I don’t like it,’” she recalled.

Eventually, Panek learned about Jerene Bailey, the wig specialist at Salon 61 in White Bear Lake. She made an appointment for a free wig consultation.

“You're really kinda scared when you go in there,” she said about entering the studio. “You don't know what it's going to be like to wear a wig.”

But after her consultation, Panek was finally fully satisfied with her wig experience. Panek said that she

learned a lot from Bailey about wig care, such as how a wig should properly fit and be cared for. For instance, she realized for the first time that the wig she had received from the hospital was too big for her.

More importantly, after seeing Bailey, Panek also regained a lot of self-confidence.

Panek recalled that when she first started chemo treatment for her breast cancer, she didn't want to talk to anybody. She believed that when people looked at her, all they would see was her hair loss and illness.

“It's easier when people don't know (you're sick), otherwise your whole life turns into breast cancer,” she said.

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — The developer behind the Aster Meadow Apartment development is back with plans for two three-story buildings instead of a five-story building.

“In response to the negative reaction from the neighbors, we have revised the site plan to accommodate two three-story, 70-unit buildings in an ‘L-shaped’ pattern on the upland portion of the site,” stated K. Peter Stalland in a memo to city officials. The development is proposed on 16 acres at the corner of County Road F and Centerville Road.

The developer is requesting to have a three-story building height that is higher than that permissible by city code, which limits heights to 36 feet.

The pitched roof proposed is 41 feet in height.

“We believe this roofline and height is compatible with the other pitched roofs in the immediate neighborhood reflecting a more residential look as opposed to a flat, commercial-type roof,” Stalland noted.

White Bear police add DWI enforcer WHITE BEAR LAKE — Impaired drivers beware. The Police Department applied for and was awarded a $96,500 grant to hire a full-time DWI enforcer.

The City Council accepted the DWI grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety at its Aug. 28 meeting.

The DWI officer will work peak nights and times, 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., and at least two weekends a month when drinking and driving is more prevalent. Police Chief Julie Swanson told council the officer must also work four mandatory days: New Year's Eve, the fishing opener, Halloween and either the day before Thanksgiving or Black Friday.

The grant is federally financed by the National Highway Safety Administration with impaired driving funds. That means the money can only be spent on projects designed to reduce DWI incidents, so the officer can only enforce laws having to do with driving while impaired.

White Bear police arrested 194 drivers for DWI in 2017, ranging in age from 17 to 70. So far in 2018, 102 drivers were arrested for DWI. White Bear Lake is the only suburban city in Ramsey County to get the grant. According to the chief, the city has always performed in the top five in the state during a wave of DWI enforcement.

The funding applies to the 2018-19 federal fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

In other business, the City Council: • Approved resolution declaring costs to be assessed and ordered the preparation of a proposed assessment roll for 2018 street reconstruction project. The hearing was set for 7 p.m. Sept. 25. The project cost $3.45 million, which included sanitary sewer replacement. The city will pay $2.4 million; benefitting property owners will pay $808,000 and the Met Council's Environmental Services will pay an estimated $191,000.

• Approved a resolution declaring costs to be assessed and ordered the preparation of a proposed assessment roll for the 2018 mill and overlay project. Total cost of the project is $242,000. The portion paid by the city is estimated to be $119,500; benefitting property owners will pay $122,500. The hearing is Sept. 25.

• Approved a resolution declaring costs to be assessed and ordered the preparation of a proposed assessment roll for Centerville Road construction project.

The project includes roadway and median modifications and installation of a new traffic light at the intersection with Cub Foods and the new developments on the east side. It is a cooperative effort between the city, county, township and the developer. Final project costs are not yet determined.

However, a preliminary assessment roll has been proposed based on appraisals by a consultant. The portion of the cost to be assessed against the seven benefiting property owners is $392,000.

• Approved a resolution accepting work and authorizing final payment of $215,000 to Pearson Bros. Inc. for the 2018 bituminous seal coating project.

• Approved a temporary liquor license for White Bear Lake Youth Hockey Association. The nonprofit organization plans to sell alcohol during the White Bear Lake Sports Center grand reopening celebration Saturday, Sept. 29.

• Lions Lynn and Carol Farley provided an update on the memorial flagpole project, which is about 80 percent complete.

The concrete base is complete and the flagpole should be delivered this week. Still pending is brickwork around the base and a plaque from the Lions Club that will go up across from the WPA sign. The VFW and American Legion purchased the first 12-by-8-foot flag.

On behalf of the Lions Club and its foundation, the Farleys presented another donation for $25,000 to the mayor for the project.

• Presented a bear plaque to Dan Louismet, who is retiring after four years with the Park Advisory Commission.

• Heard that recent stop sign enforcement initiatives resulted in 52 citations for failure to come to a complete stop in downtown and in the south end of town. The next sustained traffic enforcement initiative will focus on crosswalks.

• City Engineer Mark Burch reported that ice will be made the first week in September at the renovated Sports Center. The floor has been painted and the bleachers are going in.

NAMES IN THE NEWS A PowerUp in the Parks Rx program launched last fall between the State Parks and HealthPartners PowerUp program in the St. Croix Valley and western Wisconsin has received a state government innovation award. Pediatricians from HealthPartners White Bear Lake clinic are part of the program that emphasizes the importance of outdoor recreation. Children 2-13 receive a parks passport at their well-child visit and a guide to local and state parks with a prescription for one hour or more of physical activity a day.

Her Spirit Vodka won a gold medal at a New York City The Fifty Best Domestic Vodka tasting.

Launched in January by owner Kjersten Merila of Hugo, the vodka was judged earlier this month by a panel of judges in a blind taste test. Half the profits from Her Spirit sales help women entrepreneurs.

Merila’s husband Steve is a co-owner of Big Wood Brewery.

Rep. Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, was recognized by the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation (MOHR) with a Certificate of Appreciation for his years of work in advocating for people with disabilities in the Minnesota Legislature. The House member served as chair of the Health and Human Services Finance Committee.

for the children and youth will consist of bouncy and fun houses, a Gaga pit, games, root beer, popcorn and lunch with rolls baked in the church's brick ovens. Planning conference Each year at Press Publications we seek feedback from the community and each employee. Then we share and review their input at a management retreat. It has been a time for the leadership of the company to get away from office distractions and dig into the data. We try to drill down the feedback into three to four key areas to bring back and implement.

This year we spent a few days at Sugar Lake Lodge, just outside of Grand Rapids. The conference facilities are impressive as they have carved out a niche catering to corporate groups and leadership programs like the Blandin program.

The resort boasts a lake of crystal blue water, golf course and a supply of free bikes, paddle boards, sail boats and kayaks.

Although we did not do anything in terms of recreational activities during our conference, we did drill down a number of areas for us to focus. In the coming year, we plan to put more focus on our stories about government, continue to provide calendar pages, expand guest columnists and tighten up our online access to only those who subscribe.

History center exhibit My parents recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Some of the family celebrated by attending the “1968” exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. The exhibit is informative and visually stimulating.

As you enter you can touch a Hue helicopter as a good portion of the exhibit is dedicated to the Vietnam War. It also includes the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, the feminist movement, art, music, film scenes, fashion, decorating, sports and scientific and technological advances.

We were amazed that while so many things have advanced, many others are remarkably the same or coming back into fashion. Take your family and plan at least 90 minutes. The exhibit runs through Jan. 21, 2019.

ith all of the uncertainty and tension in Washington D.C. it is easy to turn our attention away from policymakers nationally and locally. That’s why I think it is so important I talk to people in the community, and I work to meet you where you are.

Our neighbors want policymakers to remove the barriers that stand between their family’s economic Legislator security and their opportunities in Lingo the future.

I’ve worked with Peter Fischer policymakers from both political ti to t help h l families succeed parties in building careers that last a lifetime. I joined Republican colleagues helping secure funding to rebuild the short line railroad to Hugo. This bipartisan work not only saved hundreds of existing Minnesotan manufacturing jobs, but these local businesses are planning to hire hundreds more employees.

When local firefighters were concerned they would be denied access to the retirement benefits they earned, I worked with Republican and Democratic colleagues to pass sweeping bipartisan reforms. These changes helped

the Maplewood firefighters and thousands of other public servants know they would have access to their earned retirement benefits.

I am proud of my work with my Republicans colleagues and the relationships we built. This year, key Republican policymakers asked for my help passing proposals improving our local ability to protect natural areas like White Bear Lake. It is this type of cooperation that Minnesotans expect and it’s how I work to improve the lives of Minnesotans.

But there is more work to do.

Minnesotans value our excellent education system and think every child should have access to a quality school, regardless of where they live. But state financial support hasn’t kept up, forcing local communities to stretch their resources further and further. Pre-K education has proven to give kids a jumpstart, and while we’ve made great progress in recent years, availability needs to be expanded to every family.

At the same time, Minnesotans should be able to count on college and job training they can afford.

Health care has been a divisive issue in recent years, but it’s time policymakers put forward solutions instead of blame. I believe that all Minnesotans deserve access to affordable, quality health care. Premiums and deductibles are too high, and coverage is

often inaccessible. That’s why I support letting everyone take advantage of quality care with cheaper out-of-pocket costs by leveraging the state’s negotiation power it uses with health insurance companies to provide better and cheaper access to health care.

Tuition and student loans, health care expenses, child care costs and other items cause major financial uncertainty for families. Too many families are just one paycheck removed from financial disaster. Earned sick and safe time, paid family leave and stronger wage theft protections are all ways to build stronger families. We must make sure taxes are fair for everyone, not just corporations and the wealthiest among us.

The level of pride Minnesotans carry about our state’s strengths highlights how important it is that we protect them. We know that Minnesotans care about one another. That is one of the things that makes our state such a special place. We might stay up late worrying about our own challenges, but we also want our neighbors to have a fair shot at success. We must build on our successes into the future and do so in a way that creates a better future for all of us.

am one of those people who loves the idea of having a garden but who does not like taking care of it. This year I announced to my family I was not going to plant a garden because we belong to a CSA, which provided enough vegetables.

I thought the matter was settled, but my husband announced he would do the garden. He has never gardened before or really taken an interest in the past 30 some years I’ve had one. I was surprised but happy he was willing.

He planned it all out and asked what I would like him to plant. We ended up with peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, beets, butternut squash, buttercup squash and tons of herbs. Most nights after work he heads to the garden before coming in the house.

He is a much better gardener than I have ever been, and the results are stunning. The tomatoes have never looked better. The winter squashes are enormous already. The cucumbers are

perfect. All the herbs and parsley have been growing like crazy, but the zucchini is too prolific. We have zucchini on the kitchen counter, the patio table, in the fridge and in the garage. We are eating it with every meal!

My brother showed me how to make zucchini noodles for spaghetti and lasagna. I have been roasting it with chicken and have put in smoothies. There are limitless possibilities.

My favorite way to eat zucchini is pan-fried and Wild Chow topped with some sour cream, lemon juice and Lisa a good cheese. It’s simple and a perfect side dish Erickson for any meal.

I’m so happy to have a new gardener in the house! I wonder what he will plant next year? Eggplant?

Watermelon? Peas? Whatever he chooses, I’ll have to come up with a hundred recipes for it!

Pan Fried Zucchini w/ Sour Cream and Parmesan Cheese 4 small zucchini cut in 1/4" rounds Salt and pepper 3-4 tbsp. olive oil 1/3-1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, about 1 large lemon 1 cup sour cream 3/4 cup fresh grated ParmigianoReggiano cheese 1 tsp. fresh dill, chopped, plus more for garnish Generously sprinkle both sides of zucchini slices with salt and black pepper and set aside to drain excess liquid for about 10 minutes.

Heat a large, heavy fry pan over medium/high heat. When the skillet

is hot, add half the olive oil. Place the zucchini rounds in the pan, making sure that the slices don’t overlap. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the bottoms are nicely browned. Turn and cook the other side until lightly browned. Transfer finished zucchini slices to a serving plate and keep warm in a 200° oven while you finish cooking the remaining slices with the remaining oil. You can also allow the cooked zucchini cool to room temperature.

In a small bowl, combine lemon juice, sour cream, fresh dill, salt and pepper and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Scoop dipping sauce into a serving bowl and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan.

Garnish with extra dill and serve immediately with zucchini.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Run a block for food shelf

The Shoreview library will present two programs by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) on mental health and suicide prevention during suicide prevention week this month. Mounds View High School students from Helping Every At-Risk Teen (HEART) will be on hand to provide information about how they are working to support mental health in the community. The first program, “In Our Own Voice,” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. It

is a unique public education program in which two trained speakers share compelling personal stories about living with a mental illness and achieving recovery, demonstrating that there is hope for recovery for people with mental illnesses. The presentation includes personal stories and video clips, as well an opportunity to ask questions.

Topics discussed are dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping skills, successes, hopes and dreams.

The second program, “Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17. Learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in more than 48 states. This is a one-hour workshop for members of the community who are over the age of 16 who want to learn best practices in suicide prevention.

These programs are funded by the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries. Admission is free and the programs are open to all. The library is located at 4560 Victoria St. N.

While Susan and I were native Minnesotans, our three children only knew (and loved) their life in our military community and we were concerned about how they would adjust. Finding the right school district became our top priority.

We researched school districts all over Minnesota, not just online. We talked to teachers and Realtors and community members and Mahtomedi Public Schools stood out. Our decision was easy; Mahtomedi was where we wanted to finish raising our children. We wanted them to be Zephyrs.

Our kids were welcomed to Mahtomedi with open arms. They quickly grew to love their new community, their new schools and we are 100 percent confident they are receiving a quality, caring education. Our move to Mahtomedi was the best decision we could have made for our children’s happiness and success.

Dog owner responsibility lacking I am writing this letter to the editor to share with the White Bear Lake community my disappointment with those dog owners who, apparently, have no sense of responsibility for picking up their dog waste along the lake walk. Unfortunately, I just took my last walk along our beautiful lake with my two longhaired mini-dachshunds because of the large quantity of dog waste on this walk. I have been walking my dogs here for a number of years, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. It is really sad that those dog owners cannot grasp the concept of “responsibility!” I give a big thanks to the city of White Bear Lake for making it as easy as possible for all dog owners to pick up their dog’s waste by providing free plastic bags. Apparently, that is not enough. I will never understand this! Oh well, there are other places to walk my dogs.

1 injured in crash during crosswalk enforcement campaign

WHITE BEAR LAKE — A rear-end collision occurred during a crosswalk safety education initiative Aug. 29.

White Bear police and reserve officers were conducting the campaign at three locations in White Bear Lake during the afternoon and evening. For the safety campaign, officers clothed as regular pedestrians enter a designated crosswalk and radio chaser police cars to pull over drivers who do not stop when the pedestrians are in the crosswalk.

Minnesota State Law requires drivers to stop and yield the right of way to a pedestrian crossing within marked crosswalks or at intersections with no traffic signals, according to the Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes.

At the crosswalk near County Road E and Cranbrook Drive, a crash occurred while a reserve officer was in the crosswalk, said Officer Jon Sanders. A driver stopped for the pedestrian but a driver behind her was not paying attention and rear-ended her, Sanders explained. One person was injured. The reserve officer/ pedestrian was not hit.

Resident Tom Godbout saw the enforcement taking place on the way to the vet and saw the accident at County Road E and Cranbrook Drive on the way home about 4:45 p.m. Traffic was being redirected; he said he saw two bumpers on the ground and an ambulance.

Seeing the accident made him question

the safety of the enforcement initiative, he said.

The crosswalk safety enforcement was also conducted at two other locations later that day: White Bear Avenue and Lakeaires Boulevard; and at Fourth Street and Bloom Avenue, near Cup and Cone. All three locations are paths students take to and from school.

A father watching near Lakeaires Elementary said he thinks the enforcement campaign is a good idea. He’s lived at the intersection for 10 years. “It happens a lot — people not stopping,” he said. “It’s continually happening.” One vehicle sped up through the crosswalk right in front of a group of pedestrians as he spoke.

Officer Sanders said several people thanked the group for educating people on how to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Officers also conducted the enforcement at three other locations Aug. 26. It was the second summer the department pursued the initiative. Last year, 163 drivers were stopped and 131 were cited for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The campaign was held at 12 crosswalks on four different days. Last summer, a pedestrian in White Bear Lake was injured by a driver who failed to stop for her in a crosswalk. The incident did not occur on a day when officers were out at crosswalks during the campaign.

distance based on the speed limit, as dictated by National Highway Traffic Administration guidelines, Sanders explained.

For the enforcement initiative, officers placed orange cones at a safe stopping distance and pulled over cars that failed to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks if they had not yet passed the cones when the pedestrians entered the crosswalk.

Pedestrians need to be in the crosswalk

or road at an intersection to have the right of way, but they need to have taken only one step into the road, Sanders said. Minnesota state law also tells pedestrians they should not walk into the path of a vehicle if it is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.

A call to the police department for more details on the crash was not returned in time for holiday press times.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • A resident in the 3700 block of Van Dyke Street reported providing a loaner vehicle to a woman Aug. 24; the SUV was returned but the car's title certificate was stolen from inside.

• Theft of items from a vehicle was reported in the 1700 block of Buerkle Circle Aug. 24.

• Theft was reported near the 2000 block of Fifth Street Aug. 24.

• Graffiti was reported in the walkway between 4748 and 4750 Washington Avenue Aug. 24.

• About $1,100 worth of items were reported stolen in the 1800 block of Cedar Avenue Aug. 24.

• Employees watched a male concealing merchandise in a store in the 2600 block of County Road E Aug. 25.

He spotted the surveillance and was confronted before exiting the store. The merchandise was recovered.

• A Lino Lakes woman, 23, was arrested for fourth-degree DWI near Fourth Street and Wood Avenue Aug. 25. The driver tested 0.07.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Pole barn fire in Grant The Mahtomedi Fire Department responded to a structure fire Aug. 23 near 105th Street and Jamaca Avenue N. in Grant. The fire was contained to a single structure and no injuries were reported. The large pole building was destroyed that housed a number of vehicles and aircraft. Additional crews were supplied

Plumber plans updates after lighting strike

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood • A White Bear Lake woman on Aug. 20 reported that her elderly mother on Wildwood Avenue had received a phone call saying she owed money for property taxes. Neither the complainant nor her mother gave out any sensitive information.

• A suspicious male walking near the entrance to Katherine Abbott Park at 1:53 a.m. Aug. 25 turned out to be a lost friend trying to walk home to Oakdale from his friend's house. After the subject, 26, told Washington County Sheriff's deputies he thought he was in Lake Elmo, he admitted to drinking alcohol earlier that evening. When a computer check on the walker came back clear, deputies transported the man home without incident.

Grant • A resident in the 10000 block of 101st Street N. on Aug. 21 reported placing a credit card charge authorization in his mailbox for pickup but was later informed by neighbors that they had found the torn envelope in the roadway near the mailboxes. Although all the original contents were still in the envelope, they contained sensitive personal information. To date the complainant has not reported signs of suspicious activity on any of his accounts or credit cards.

• A resident in the 9000 block of Janero Court on Aug. 22 reported losing his driver's license two days earlier while at the Orlando, Florida, airport.

• A red and black Trek mountain bike was

reported stolen Aug. 22 from Mahtomedi High School in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. The complainant told deputies he had left his unlocked mountain bike at the school the night before while attending a sporting event. When he returned to the school the following morning, the bike was gone.

• A Grant youth, 16, was arrested Aug. 22 in the 11000 block of 79th Street N. for gross misdemeanor check forgery after he stole a $150 check from his grandfather's desk and forged his grandfather's signature. When the live-in grandson tried to cash the check at the drive-up window of First State Bank and Trust in Stillwater, the teller recognized the youth from church and thought the signature looked suspicious. The teller told the youth she was holding the check for verification and that the youth could pick it up after football practice. In the meantime, the teller phoned the grandfather, who came to the bank to retrieve the check.

• A White Bear Lake man, 47, was cited Aug. 22 on eastbound 75th Street N. and Lake Elmo Avenue N. for passing on the right in a no-passing zone after deputies at the intersection observed the motorist pass three vehicles. The driver told deputies he thought the turning lane was a passing lane to be used to pass vehicles making a turn.

• A Grant man, 70, will be mailed a citation for misdemeanor unreasonable acceleration after an incident at 7:16 p.m. Aug. 23 near 105th Street N. at Jamaca Avenue N. in which he tried to go around deputies blocking traffic during a house fire. The motorist tried to make a turn but was redirected. However, the driver accelerated quickly, causing the tires to spin and

leave skid marks on the road. As the vehicle left the road and went into the ditch, the driver slammed on the brakes and came to a hard stop. The motorist jumped out of the cab of his truck and rapidly approached deputies, while yelling at them about needing to see the owner of the house on fire. When deputies advised the subject that the road was closed, he gave them his city of Grant councilman business card and yelled that deputies needed to give the card to the homeowner and have the homeowner call him. When deputies advised the driver that they would be mailing him a citation, he said, “We'll see how that goes!”

Mahtomedi • A Blaine man, 38, was arrested at 7:05 a.m. Aug. 21 on southbound Century Avenue at Long Lake Road for felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, possessing marijuana in a motor vehicle, obstruction of justice, failure to drive in a single lane and failure to signal after being pulled over for the last two traffic violations. During the traffic stop, deputies smelled marijuana coming from the Dodge Ram pickup and removed the three passengers to conduct a search.

When deputies tried to remove the driver from the truck, he fled south on Century Avenue in the vehicle and dumped a backpack out of the vehicle. The truck was stopped by backup deputies, and the backpack was located by an assisting agency. After the contents of the backpack were revealed, one of the passengers, a Stillwater man, 22, was also arrested for felony fifth-degree controlled substance possession, felony possession of a loaded firearm and marijuana possession. Items found in the backpack also

included a can of butane, methamphetamine and mushrooms, along with check cards and personal documents belonging to people who were not in the vehicle.

• A Stillwater man, 37, was issued a written warning Aug. 22 on East Avenue and Stillwater Road for a missing headlight.

• A Mahtomedi man, 39, was arrested Aug. 23 on Hilton Trail and 70th Street N. on a felony warrant for drug possession after deputies on routine patrol in the 100 block of Hallam Avenue S. conducted a random license plate check. The driver was taken into custody without incident, and the vehicle was left on the shoulder as the driver requested.

• A Ford Econoline E250 reported stolen from Woodland Court was reported recovered Aug. 23 in White Bear Lake by the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department. The vehicle had sustained damage to both sides, and the rear license plate was missing.

Pine Springs • A resident in the 7000 block of Pinehurst Court on Aug. 20 reported losing $1,700 to scam artists over a $400 china cabinet the complainant was selling online.

Willernie • A Willernie man, 38, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in the 200 block of Stewart Road for possessing drug paraphernalia and reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality after a neighbor reported a disturbance in the form of gunshots. When deputies arrived on the scene, they observed a man with minor injuries to his face, an empty holster on the kitchen counter and bullet holes in the west wall.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents:

Vadnais Heights • A 28-year-old Blaine man finally reported the theft of his Playstation 4 gaming system three months earlier from a residence in the 3500 block of Arcade Street.

• A female resident in the 1100 block of County Road D called 911 in the late night hours of Aug. 21 after three males forced their way inside and got physical with one of her friends. The trio fled the scene before deputies arrived. An investigation is underway.

Future Eagle Scout gets bell rung in Birchwood No one seems to know its history, but the 200-pound cast iron bell that sat in the basement of Birchwood's village hall for years now has a place of prominence.

The bell's return is the result of an Eagle Scout project by David Doughty, a White Bear Lake Area High School senior who belongs to Troop 434 out of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

With some expert help from a few resident volunteers and fellow Scouts, Doughty's mission to build a tower came to a successful finish Aug. 22 when the antique bell was ceremoniously rung.

Mayor Mary Wingfield was there, along with residents Gene Ruehle, who helped pitch the idea, John Lund, Andy Sorenson and engineer Bill Becklin, who donated time and skills to the project.

The mayor thinks the bell may have been used as a civil defense warning system back in the day, but she isn't sure. “It will be nice to pull it out of mothballs and display it as part of our heritage,” Wingfield said as the six-month project commenced.

Doughty heard about the bell tower from Ruehle while ushering at church one Sunday. He thought the community service project, required for the Eagle

rank, had merit.

So he and Ruehle scouted tower designs at White Bear Boat Works and with some modifications, came up with a blueprint.

The hardest part, Doughty said: “Getting in touch with people and getting everyone on the same page with the same ideas.”

Carpentry isn't a future career goal, but engineering might be, only the chemical kind, said the soon-to-be Eagle Scout. He's thinking the University of Minnesota-Duluth next year as his college of choice.

Asked if he's proud of the project, the 17-year-old replied, “Yes, definitely. It turned out like I'd hoped.”

Funding for the $1,500 project is by way of private donations, similar to the community warming house built in Birchwood in 2013. The White Bear Lake American Legion has donated $125, according to Wingfield, which puts the fundraising goal at the halfway point.

The tax-deductible donation can be mailed to the city administrator, 207 Birchwood Ave., Birchwood, MN 55110.

have 70 heated, underground parking stalls. There would be 140 total parking stalls above ground.

The Ramsey County highway engineering department has reviewed the project and said there are no issues related to traffic that will be generated from the development.

The apartment buildings would have a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units of various sizes. Rents would range from $1,000 to $2,200 per month, depending on size and location within the building. Each unit would have a covered deck. There will be small garden plots for resident use on the site.

The developer expects most tenants would be young professionals and older couples.

The development came before the Planning Commission in July as a five-story building and although it passed by majority vote, a group of neighbors opposed it. The developer did not bring the plans before the City Council as scheduled in July but instead chose to rework the plans based on neighbor input.

City staff is reviewing the developer's

new application packet. The Planning Commission plans to hold a public hearing at a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at City Hall. Once a recommendation is made, the City Council will consider the requests at a subsequent meeting.

Councilman Greg Urban has indicated that he will abstain from voting on the project proposal. His father, Gerry Urban, is one of the owners of the land.

Gerry plans to continue to farm the western portion of the farmland he and his siblings inherited from their parents.

Gerry's grandfather bought one of the parcels in 1938 and his father purchased one next to it in 1943. There are 3.5 acres of buildable land on the western portion, which is about 14 acres. Someday, that will likely become homes, Gerry has explained, when he is no longer able to farm.

The eastern portion of the land was rezoned to include apartments in 2011 after a city planner suggested it during comprehensive plan reviews in 2008 when Gerry worked as city administrator. The Metropolitan Council had suggested planning for a little more density in the city.

Wind and weather conditions made Loon watching more difficult this week. When we were lucky enough to spend some time with our favorite feathered friends, we were reminded of just how much work it is to be a Loon on White Bear Lake. Think about it.

Every day is a matter of survival and safety. Focus and communication are essential to staying one step ahead of predators and boat traffic. Keeping an ever watchful eye and warning other Loons through calls and behaviors require concentration and energy and we saw it all this week. Whether it is mastering the foot waggle and wing flap; preening to stay buoyant; fishing for hours; vying for territory; taking off and landing; or leading a wing-rowing charge, it is all hard work. So it is only fitting that we include the Loons in this Labor Day weekend celebration. We are still working on finding out more about our “celebrity” chick, featured in the right upper frame, who spent most of last week near the end of our dock. fi ned by her illness. “When you wear a wig, you think everyone knows,” she said. But while wearing Bailey's wig, she said “very few people knew I was sick.”

“If you get the wig and it fits properly and is the right color,” she continued, “... it will just make you more confident.” She wasn't the only one who noticed improved self-confidence; she said that her daughter noticed it, too.

“What a difference it made to me to have that wig and start wearing it,” she said.

Although the notes are all phrased differently, they echo a similar sentiment: a revival of self-confidence after undergoing Bailey's wig services.

“This is my calling in life,” she said. “This is just something that is so needed for women.”

Bailey adhered to this call 15 years ago when several of her clients needed wig care but didn't know where to turn. After researching brands of wigs with natural-looking appearances, she went to a seminar hosted by a company from California and then got right to work providing wig care and free wig consultations.

Her work has continued since Salon 61 relocated to downtown White Bear Lake about a year ago. Today, clients who have faced cancer, alopecia and other conditions involving hair loss meet with Bailey in a private room at the studio. Bailey then does everything she can to make the clients feel as comfortable about the wig-fitting procedure as possible.

She understands and has observed that clients coming in for a wig consultation often feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

“I make them feel comfortable,” she said. “It's pretty tense when they walk in … I try to break the ice so it's not so tense to begin with.”

Breaking the ice often looks like explaining what the wigs she carries are made of and assuring her client that these wigs are comfortable. Bailey explained that sharing knowledge and assurance about the

wigs inspires trust in the clients.

She also encourages clients to bring friends or family members to provide further support and insight, as well as photographs of themselves from when they used to have hair.

Photographs often serve as inspiration for Bailey when she chooses, fits, cuts and styles wigs so that the wigs can match the clients’ hair preferences. This practice is one of many reflecting Bailey's efforts to make wigs seem less wig-like and more like actual hair.

“Hair is really important to (clients),” she explained. “They don't think of anything else to do with their (situation) until they get their wig taken care of.” Bailey also takes care to update her stock with the latest hairstyles.

In the end, Bailey said that when she started wig care, “I wanted to make my clients feel more confident with themselves,” and “have somebody feel like themselves.”

The thank-you notes on display and the confidence she has observed from clients when they leave their consultation both seem to testify that she has accomplished her mission.

“I am very, very thankful that (I started wig care),” she said.

A lasting impact Panek no longer wears the wig she bought from Bailey, but the confidence she gained from wearing it has had a lasting impact.

About a month ago, Panek learned that her daughter had raised money by selling raffle tickets at a bean bag tournament. About $1,100 was donated to Bailey's wig services at Salon 61.

Bailey never met Panek's daughter; she was attending to a client when the woman came in to donate the money.

“I can't believe she did that,” Bailey said, noting that such an act of fi nancial generosity has never happened to her before. Bailey is also shocked that anyone would leave so much money behind and trust that it would be used wisely.

Since then, Bailey has used the money to provide two free wigs and is planning to provide a third. A wig usually costs between $250 and $400.

“I need to meet with them,” Bailey said of the women who participated in the raffle. “It's very appreciated.”

Hikers for health care workers finish 100-mile trek sore but determined

Our group of nine hikers drove up to the Minnesota/ Canada border Thursday, Aug. 16, and took our first steps on the trail early Friday morning.

Seven days later, three hikers finished off the final 100 miles at Temperance River State Park. By then, the smaller group was hiking much slower, had blisters on their feet, insect bites, a variety of other aches and pains — and each had lost a few pounds. But each was determined to finish.

Former White Bear Lake Firefighter Jeff Loeks dreamt up the idea of “100 Miles 100 Stories” to help shed some light on what he’s been witnessing as a growing trend at his current job. Jeff now works in a busy local hospital emergency department. He’s personally endured physical violence and verbal abuse and threats from patients he’s simply trying to help. Jeff felt the need to do something about the trend when he realized nursing staff were leaving their jobs as a result.

Some are leaving because of injuries sustained; others, because “this isn’t what I signed up for.”

Jeff struggled with how this awareness campaign could help. After having many discussions with those affected by the violence and getting the word out about the reason for the 100-mile journey, he started hearing from health care providers around the country; how so many other health care providers were affected by this growing problem and how bringing it to light has helped them.

An emergency room technician at a St. Paul hospital, Loeks says violence against nursing staff is increasing each year and at the point where something needs to be done. Each mile of the hike was dedicated to a health care professional who shared their story.

100-mile trek with other hikers. A surprisingly high number of hikers indicated they were in the health care field: nurses, a hospitalist, a radiology technician, a physical therapist and more. Each were interested and shared their own stories of hostile situations that have impacted them directly at their jobs. These stories further motivated the group.

Many of the original nine hikers would have loved to continue the full 100 miles but just couldn’t because of their work schedules. Some dropped out due to fatigue.

The route was on the Superior Hiking Trail. I was one of the final three. The trail is beautiful with many drastic elevation and terrain changes that made it difficult at times, particularly with the pace we needed to maintain in order to wrap it up in a week. The remaining hikers were Loeks and his stepson Brady Haroldson. Brady’s inspiration to finish the hike was so he could dedicate the 100 miles to his mother, who is a nurse.

Ron Hawkins is a former White Bear Lake firefighter and current Woodbury paramedic who lives in White Bear Township. He was part of the group with Loeks that walked from Duluth to White Bear Lake in 2013 to raise money for a special ATV for the White Bear Fire Department.

1918 The fire alarm about 6 o’clock Tuesday evening called the department to one of the worst fires we have had for a long time. The Mabon house on Eight street between Lake and Johnson avenues was found to be all ablaze when the firemen reached the scene in the shortest time possible after the alarm was turned in. The firemen were informed by the occupants that they had removed the furniture and fought the fire for over a half hour before turning in the alarm.

The building is a duplex owned by Mrs. E. L. Mabon.

Memorial bench represents more than memories

A memorial bench at Tamarack Nature Center holds special significance for a former resident who has some fond and some not-so-fond memories of growing up in rural White Bear Township.

But this isn't about the negative stuff, stressed Danny Barnes, a child of a mixed-race marriage, which was the source of the not-so-fond. Rather, it's a tribute to his parents, Mable and Charles Barnes, who raised 14 children on property now owned by the nature preserve.

The large Barnes family lived on 35 acres at 1350 East County Road H2 in the '60s and '70s.

They raised chickens and pigs, grew a large garden, and maintained a self-sufficient lifestyle.

They also endured unexpected bigotry that Danny preferred was kept out of the bench story.

Mable was a white Norwegian woman who married Charles Barnes, an African-American.

Charles worked as a pilot for the county. Danny remembers his dad landing his small Cessna in their backyard. “As a family, it was an amazing opportunity to get off Rondo (in St. Paul) and move to rural White Bear,” he recalled. “We thought we were rich and famous.”

But enough about the past, Barnes continued, switching to the bench and what it means to his siblings who are scattered around the country.

He left Minnesota in 1981 but returned in 2002 to fi nd the property had been acquired by Tamarack Nature Center. He knows his folks would be happy to hear the land became a preserve instead of a development.

After the discovery, the family worked with Tamarack staff in ’05 to install a bench. It was recently refurbished to include names of the Barnes' children below the commemorative plaque. Barnes was so pleased with the outcome that he asked the Press to acknowledge the center's staff.

“I appreciate what he wants to do,” said Marcie Oltman, nature center director. “We do have a great staff. But that's not news.”

The real story, she said, is the unique and, at times, tragic history of one of the township's fi rst black families. “There's a lot of emotions and back story,” Oltman noted. “They lost the land. I don't know the details and we haven't dug into it.”

A memorial bench dedicated to Mable and Charles Barnes sits at Tamarack Nature Center. The family had a small farm on the property 50-plus years ago and their children wanted to acknowledge the ownership. The bench was recently updated with the names of the siblings added. Billy and Judy graduated from White Bear Lake High School.

Barnes, a Pentecostal minister living in Minneapolis, prefers it that way.

His parents passed away “some time back,” Barnes said. “Visiting them at a cemetery did not seem appropriate, so I contacted Marcie and we purchased a bench in their loving memory.

“I want to share my appreciation for the staff, maintenance crew and all the people involved with the bench. It was a wonderful experience and reasonably priced. We were dealt with with love, respect and reverence for our family legacy.”

Tamarack has about a half-dozen benches dedicated to people or organizations. The cost is about $1,300 each. The Barnes’ bench was the fi rst to acknowledge a former resident of the land, according to Oltman.

Her communication with Barnes became more

personal for Oltman as the project evolved and she learned more of the family's history. “There was miscommunication in the beginning and it didn't happen quickly enough for Danny,” she said. “Looking at it from his perspective, I could see he saw a system and systems aren't historically great friends. It was deeply personal to him and it was pointed out to me.”

Oltman shared the fact she happens to be on the racial equity team for the county Parks and Rec department. “This became a very topical and poignant example of how systems, either small or large, affect people,” she said. “I've thanked Danny for appearing in my life as a teacher. He taught me a valuable perspective.”

Whenever he gets out to the nature center, Barnes grabs a shovel out of his trunk and digs at the place his childhood home was located. It burned to the ground with all its contents under suspicious circumstances, so he's hoping to uncover some memories.

Any artifacts he unearths would be something to pass on to his great-great-grandchildren, just like the bench.

Football: Bears snap 19-game skid with airborne comeback to beat Cougars 28-27

The celebration on the field looked more like that of a playoff victory than just a non-conference season opener.

However, no one could blame the White Bear Lake players, coaches and student gallery for that.

The Bears, having endured two consecutive winless seasons, snapped a 19-game losing streak with a 28-27 win over Centennial on the Cougars field Thursday evening and did so in high drama, rallying from a 21-6 deficit and scoring the game-winner with 46 seconds left on Cooper Anderson’s third touchdown pass of the second half.

And the team they beat was 8-2 last year.

“We feel nobody can stop us unless we stop ourselves. We stopped ourselves in the first half,” said Anderson, a senior who’s been a strong No. 1 singles player on the tennis team since ninth grade and took over as starting quarterback this year.

That’s a lot of confidence for the QB of a team that had not won since the regular-season finale against Rosemount in 2015, but Anderson and his cohorts looked very poised throughout the second half. Told that he’s got some good receivers, he smiled, “We’ve got

good athletes at every position.”

Anderson threw a costly interception in his first attempt but bounced back to complete nine of 16 passes for 166 yards.

Rallying his team from a 15-point deficit, he found Kevin Boeing deep over the middle for a 48-yard score, hit Dominic Smith for a 10-yard TD and lobbed a four-yarder to Eamon Kerrigan-Kroder for the game-winner with 46 seconds left.

The Bears, down 21-19 after Smith’s TD, stopped three Centennial runs and got a 20-yard punt return from Brice Peters to the Cougar 34. They barged to the one-yard line with seven runs, got thrown back three yards on third down, and turned it over to kicker Nicholas Blanding, who drilled a 26-yard field goal for a 22-21 lead with 3:27 left.

Centennial has an excellent arm as well in Connor Zulk, who responded with a perfectly-thrown aerial to Noah Larson streaking down the sideline for a 64-yard touchdown with 2:43 left, regaining the lead. But the Bears were able to stop Zulk short of the goal line on a conversion run, which turned out to be a game-saver.

Down 27-21, Anderson went back to work, hitting Russell Schoeller for a 40yard gainer that perched the Bears on the Cougar ten. Schoeller had a step on the defender and hauled in the pass just

She was an all-state tournament pick last year and has already committed to a Division I college team, Colorado.

Zulk completed nine of 18 for 181 yards with no interceptions, hitting Carter Anderson for a 30-yard touchdown and Noah Larson for a 64-yard touchdown. He also hit Larson for an apparent 59-yard score late in the first half that was called back for clipping.

Zulk was also their top rusher with 12 carries for 62 yards.

Centennial took a quick 14-0 lead after two Bear turnovers. Osmek intercepted a pass to set the Cougars up at the Bear 22 and Zulk sprinted around end to pay dirt on the team’s first offensive play of the season. Later in the quarter, Jake McCortney recovered a Bear fumble that gave the Cougars another short field and Brandon Xiong scored from the one.

That led to three lobs into the corner of the end zone. Smith caught an apparent TD pass while tightly covered but was ruled out of the end zone. Centennial’s Zack Osmek intercepted the next one but a teammate was called for pass interference. Then came the toss to Kerrigan-Kroder, who was well-covered but pulled the ball into his chest.

“We work on those plays a lot and we know all our receivers can go get the ball,” said Anderson, whose scramble on the PAT was stopped just short of the goal line.

Zulk, in the final 40 seconds, completed two first-down passes but his last two throws from 40 yards out were incomplete.

The Bear players celebrated deliriously while the Bears student gallery remained cheering from behind the fence at the front of the bleachers. If there was ever a time for the students to storm the field, this was it for Bear fans, who certainly had not had the occasion to for some time. A Bears assistant coach sprinted toward them and signaled with his right arm to go ahead.

Dozens of students, clad in the Hawaiian shirts that have become tradition for season football openers, streamed into the field to join the players.

Bear coach Ryan Bartlett, who had a cancer scare between seasons and is taking weekly chemotherapy for Hodgkins lymphoma, had a tough time addressing the troops in the end zone. He got a few words out but mostly choked up.

“It kind of hit me all at once,” Bartlett said a few minutes later. “The last four months, and that last drive.”

About the performance, he praised the Bears defense for making some big stops in the second half (“except for that one hiccup”) and the stellar air game in the second half. “We should have started throwing more, earlier,” he said.

Wizards on water: Local family now has 3 water ski Hall of Famers

The Minnesota Water Skiing Hall of Fame has just 23 members, and three of them were produced by one household on the shore of Bald Eagle Lake.

Evelyn Chapin Duvall was inducted Aug. 10, following her father/ coach Tom Chapin, a pioneer of the sport, and her older brother Paul Chapin, long known for his showmanship on the waves, both previously inducted. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call them one of the First Families of water skiing in Minnesota.

“I was really surprised. Dad and Paul usually get all the attention,” Evelyn chuckled, during a recent gathering of the three of them for the Press.

She related that people frequently remark to her “I didn’t know Paul had a sister!” at the start of her induction speech at the state tournament. Not that she minds.

“With a brother as outgoing and talented as Paul Chapin, it was somewhat humbling to grow up in his shadow,” she told the audience.

“But I held my own, thank you very much, and I am honored to be chosen to follow him and my Dad into the Minnesota Water Ski Hall of Fame.”

The Hall, which was created in 1990 by the Minnesota Water Ski Association (MWSA), and exists only online and on plaques, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions. The fi rst member was Ralph Samuelson of Lake City, known as the “Father of Water Skiing” as the fi rst person in the world to traverse the water on two skis behind a boat, in 1922 on Lake Pepin.

Tom Chapin and his late wife Anzle, who grew up next door to each other at Bald Eagle, started water skiing in 1949. They were among the founders of the Bald Eagle Water Club in 1953, the year Paul was literally born into the sport. (It was originally formed to promote water safety on the lake and morphed into a skiing club.)

“My parents did love to ski and did lots of different stunts for fun,” Evelyn noted in her induction narrative. In the early '50s, they put on shows at various community festivals, including one where they skied behind an airplane on Howard Lake. Evelyn joined them in the late 1960s with the “little girls ballet” group. By that time, her dad, three brothers and she were competing at such sites as Lake Phalen, Lake of the Isles, Island Lake in Shoreview, Albert Lea, Dubuque, Iowa, and Minocqua, Wisconsin.

Her dad “made me feel as strong as the boys — and told me to growl when I pulled across the wake.”

Tom Chapin, 92, still lives near Bald Eagle Lake with his wife, Ida, and Evelyn and Paul live on the lake, Evelyn and husband Mark in the family home. Two other brothers, Ross, an architect, and Steve, who builds wooden boats, reside on the West Coast. They also water skied competitively, but not as seriously.

“It’s a family sport,” acknowledged Paul. “I learned to ski at age five here on Bald Eagle Lake, right in front of this house.”

Paul assembled a book of photographs and articles commemorating Tom’s — and his late wife’s and kids’ — long history in water skiing, on the occasion of Tom’s 90th birthday, two years ago. The family are also avid alpine skiers, and one black-and-white photo shows Tom airborne on the hilly White Bear Yacht Club golf course. There are photos of Tom as a robust young athlete bursting over the waters, and posed shots of Tom and his blonde spouse on the lake looking like a 1950s movie couple.

“Dad was one of the pioneers in (establishing) competing in the state, which started in 1954, and he’s been a president of the organization and national champ numerous times,” Paul said.

Paul has competed in 50 national tournaments, starting at age 10 in Long Beach, California. He was national champion in tricks in 1977 (in Berkeley, California) while taking silver in slalom and overall. He has posted numerous other top-five national fi nishes in all three events, and competed on the pro tour in slalom and jumping from 1974-79.

Paul recently retired as a pilot with American Airlines, where he

was a captain on the 787 Dreamliner, flying all over the world. Besides competing, he’s active with the USA Water Ski and Wake Sports Foundation and serves as its president.

The national nonprofit is currently constructing the USA Water Sports complex in central Florida which will have a cable wake park, a manmade ski lake and a new headquarters and national Hall of Fame museum building.

Evelyn, who started skiing at age seven and competing at age 11, has qualified for 26 national meets, posting 13 top-10 fi nishes and six top-five fi nishes. Her best fi nish was second place in 2012 in slalom. She placed seventh at this year’s nationals in Maize, Kansas.

She holds 10 state and regional records for points in slalom and tricks for her various age-group divisions, and her state record for the Women 2 division lasted from 1990 until this

year. In 2005 she earned the Toby Shotwell Award for most points scored in a tournament.

An employee of Press Publications in design and layout, after serving the Star Tribune in the same capacity for many years, she has also served the MWSA as a designer of marketing materials and as secretary.

She couldn’t seem to get away from water skiing, even when she got married in 1990.

“My friends couldn’t believe my new name was Duvall — the biggest name in water skiing at the time,” she said, referring to Sammy and Camille Duvall, brother-sister champions of the day.

Her husband Mark water skied a little, although his favorite use of lakes was fi shing, and now sailing, she said. Their kids and grandkids also took up skiing. After all, it’s in their blood.

BROWN’S CREEK WATERSHED DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at 6:30 p.m., the Brown’s Creek Watershed District Board of Managers will hold a public hearing to receive comments on the BCWD proposed Brown’s Creek Riparian Shading Project in Stillwater.

BCWD completed a riparian shading study and identified the Brown’s Creek riparian shading projects along 2,400 linear feet of Brown’s Creek near the Millbrook development in Stillwater. BCWD would plant native plants, shrubs and trees to increase the amount of shade over the creek during the growing season to reduce stream warming. This project is proposed to begin in 2019.

The estimated total cost for the project (including engineering, implementation, 3 years of maintenance, and 20% contingency) is $87,140. The project will be funded through a county-wide ad valorem levy as authorized by Minnesota Statutes chapter 103B in the amount of $8,380 and state WatershedBased Funding pilot grant funds in the amount of $78,760.

NEW THIS YEAR Township Day has a new look! This year the White Bear Township Board consolidated the food trucks/beer garden/vendor mart, and community demonstrations in the Upper Parking Lot, with the kids activities on the adjacent soccer fields, which allows better access to the Town Hall and the kids playground at the top of the hill.

Throughout the day, guests can head down the hill to enjoy the live entertainment, bean bag tournaments, and the new Automotive Car Show. This also opens up the Lower Parking Lot for additional parking.

Town Hall Tours - 2:30, 4:30 & 6:30 p.m. (the green building on the west end of the Upper Parking Lot.) The White Bear Lake Area Historical Society will give an illustrated presentation on the unique story of the White Bear Town Hall and how it has evolved with the Town of White Bear throughout the decades, from once sitting on the shore of White Bear Lake to its final location at the heart of Polar Lakes Park. They will share its story from its design by Cass Gilbert to the devastating 1923 fire and the building's role in tremendous growth and change of this area in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as what the plan is for sharing this past with future generations.

In addition to the presentations, visit the Town Hall throughout the day for history related trivia, information on the restoration project, plans for the use of the building and how you can be a part of that project as well information on the many initiatives of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society.

Automotive Car Show - 2:00-6:30 p.m., awards at 7 p.m. Open to all makes and models. Located on the lower soccer fields with the popular Bean Bag Tournament (just west of the amphitheater), this year’s new Automotive Car Show will give dash plaques and swag goodie bags to the first 50 cars who enter in the car show. Guests and participants will have the chance to vote for their favorite car/truck, with awards for the top three vehicles. Free admission, and donations to the White Bear Lake Emergency Food Shelf appreciated. And while you can’t touch the Car Show vehicles, you can still take part in the “Smash-a-Car” fundraiser, where you can take a swing at a junker with a sledgehammer. Proceeds will be donated to Polar Lakes Park.

WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE! Don’t let false news mislead you. Mike & Brenda Gengler have owned Guldens for 28 years. In March, Mike passed away after his eight-year battle with cancer. Brenda has run the restaurant since Mike was diagnosed. Along with Mike Severson (Director of Operations), Steve Ginn (General Manager) and Guldens incredible staff, the restaurant has continued to flourish.

We are in business and our plans are to continue.

We are 100% still open and are not on the market.

Recently, I have heard rumors from customers and business owners in the area that we are selling Guldens. Not true!

Everybody loved Mike and he’s always going to be missed. But this was his dream, a we want to keep his legacy alive.

Mike passed away March 8, 2018 and I chose to close on Mondays to have a repair, maintenance and staff activity day. So, these changes may have become concerning to our patrons, but don’t worry,

I am confident our dedicated employee team will continue to deliver hospitality for our guests.

It’s been an exciting ending to the summer with a few nice XXX. XX - XX, 2018 rainfalls and even some high winds. We’ll come up a little short High 75° of normal for rainfall this past August but overall it has been Low 55° a wet summer. We really haven’t much in the way of severe weather not only here in the Twin Cities but outstate as well. %Sun 59% It seems the number of thunderstorms and tornadoes are well PCP 0.72” down this year and instead have been replaced with heavy rainfalls. I keep hearing more about flooding causing damage instead of high winds. Nature Note: Friend Sandy has noticed more acorns than usual. She’s wondering if that means a colder or warmer winter. I’m forecasting a warmer winter, she’s thinking colder. Check back in the spring.

Mahtomedi girl snags 2 national raquetball titles Ava Kaiser, eighth-grader at Mahtomedi Middle School, captured two national championships in racquetball this summer.

Kaiser was 12U singles champion, as well as 12U doubles champion with partner Kareena Mathew of Oregon, in the National Racquetball Junior Olympics Championships at Wellmark YMCA in Des Moines, Iowa, June 20-24.

Top-seeded in singles, Kaiser defeated Meera Julia of Iowa 15-0, 15-0; Ava Naworski of California 155, 15-3; and, in the finals, beat Mathew, her doubles

partner and the No. 2 seed, 15-6, 15-7.

In the doubles finals, Kaiser and Mathew beat Californians Naworski and Sonya Chetty 15-4, 7-15, 11-0.

Kaiser also placed second in U14 mixed doubles, teaming with Joseph Marshall, 11, of Tennessee.

For the third straight year, Kaiser earned a spot on Team USA for the International Racquetball Federation junior world meet. This year’s event will be held Nov. 1-10 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Mahtomedi clips Bears 2-0 in duel of girls soccer powers

In a duel of next-door neighbors with state tournament aspirations, the Mahtomedi Zephyrs defeated White Bear Lake 2-0 at home Tuesday evening.

Mahtomedi is the defending Class A state champion, ranked No. 1, and White Bear Lake is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A. Both were 2-0 coming into the game.

Anna Wagner and Sydney Panek notched Mahtomedi’s goals in the first half. Wagner got a feed from Grace Padelford and drilled a shot from 30 yards, on the right wing. Panek made it 2-0 with a header off a free kick from Audrey Sexson.

“The score does not do White Bear Lake justice,” Zephyrs coach Dave Ward assessed. “They dominated major parts of the game and looked very dangerous in transition and on corner kicks. They

put high pressure on the ball.”

The Zephyrs also suffered some turnovers, but “showed grit in hanging onto the lead,” Wald said, adding that they were helped by Megan Lisowy’s stout goalkeeping. She was credited with 19 saves in the shutout.

“We had some near misses, and Kayla Anderson and Claire Odmark each had a shot hit the crossbar,” remarked Dave Ashley, Bears co-coach, adding that goalie Tristian Lehner had four saves

and “stopped some quality shots from Mahtomedi.”

Mahtomedi opened the season beating Rochester Mayo 8-0 and Rochester Century 6-1 in Rochester on Aug. 24-25. In those games, Sexson notched two goals and four assists. Lauren Heinsch tallied three goals, Anna Wagner and Panek two each, and Padelford, Mickenzie Mireault, Sonia Meyer, Ellie McCormick, and Lily Johnson one each.

College takes title to fire engine Firefighters in training at Century College now have a shiny, yellow, new tool. The fire science program has acquired a fire engine to “enhance training capabilities” at a bargain price of $6,000 from the Maplewood Fire Department. Fire/EMS Training Manager Steve Shapira said the 1989 Ford diesel engine (not truck) has low miles and offers “capabilities we never had” for the Firefighter 1 and 2 program. Century offers a two-year associates degree in fire science. Enrollment numbers are “good,” but the program is not full, Shapira said.

Maplewood Fire EMS chief Mike Mondor noted the title transfer took six months and “would not have happened without patience and cooperation,” adding, “Maplewood Fire has a rich tradition of partnership with Century to ensure future leaders are trained for success.”

Mahtomedi teacher recognized at State Fair

Geoff Rattë, a class of 1967 St. Jude of the Lake Catholic School alum, recently volunteered at the school. He posed next to these picture-perfect penguin mascots at St. Jude of the Lake School in Mahtomedi. Volunteers and staff are working on collecting and archiving information for 65 years of graduating classes. These picture-posing penguins are part of the large-scale School Alumni Project, which continues at the Alumni Tent at the St. Jude of the Lake Cornfest on Sept. 8. Any alumni stopping by the tent can receive a free St. Jude School Alumni shirt.

Trish Haugh, a second-grade teacher at Wildwood Elementary School in Mahtomedi Public Schools, was recently named a Minnesota finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program. Haugh received a special recognition at the Minnesota State Fair on Thursday, Aug. 23, at the STEM booth. PAEMST is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. Awardees serve as models for

their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of STEM (including computer science) education.

College hosts summer academy Century College held the Summer Scholars Academy (SSA) this summer. “It’s like a summer boot camp for students,” said Century College faculty member Chris Weyandt, who is the reading and writing instructor at SSA. “With this program, students have the opportunity to move up a step and get a jump on their fall college experience.” SSA is a free program for incoming students who tested one class below college-level on the ACCUPLACER. The program, which recently wrapped up its second year, is made up of 16-hour courses in math, reading, and/or writing. The program includes mandatory tutoring, supplemental workshops, access to resource centers, study skills help, a financial literacy seminar and an orientation to campus technology. The program was made possible due to a more than $1 million donation from Richard Fink, the former CEO of G&K Services, and his wife, Beverly.
