Young adults who said yes to drugs warn teens BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
A cheerleader and a football player — young students who saw years of their lives destroyed by a momentary lapse of reason when confronted by heroin. “That was the one drug I said I would never try,” Aubrey Lee, a graduate of Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge recovery center, told a class of health students at the White Bear Lake Area Learning Center this month. “It changed the entire course of my life.” Lee overdosed for the first time at age 15. Not long before, she had been an Apple Valley cheerleader. Family separation and her father's drug use had caused her to experiment with alcohol and weed. When she was found out and kicked off her cheer squad, she lost hope and began to rebel more. When out with friends skipping class, they pulled out heroin and she felt she couldn't say no because she didn't want to be the odd one out, she said. That choice led her to spend the rest of her teen years in 11 treatment centers. When she turned 18, she decided to try meth instead of heroin since so many friends were dying of heroin overdose. “I lost everything,” she remembered. “I was homeless on the streets.” At 19, she ended up in jail. A bit further to the west in Chaska, Sam Schultz spent his high school years playing football and partying. He thought adults had lied about how bad drugs were when he was in middle school because drinking and smoking weed just added to the party atmosphere. His world came crashing down when he dropped out of college. He was upset he had followed his girlfriend to North Dakota State University in Fargo without considering where he had wanted to study, so he made a quick decision one day and left. Back home in Chaska, he found a new group of friends, who introduced him to heroin. He hated it but kept doing it. Eventually, he started feeling sick like he had the flu. He was surprised when a friend convinced him he would feel better if he used more heroin. “I smoked some and I immediately felt better,” he said. “All of a sudden I realized I was addicted to heroin.” Then
Solar garden proposal taking heat in Grant BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
A piece of property owned by Joyce Welander is one of maybe three parcels in Grant suitable for a community solar garden. A renewable energy company called U.S. Solar approached her more than a year ago asking if she'd be interested in leasing her land for a 1 megawatt commercial array. Welander said yes; the city said no. But the retired dairy farmer, who says she can use the income, is not giv-
ing up so easily. She went knocking on doors this summer to gather more than 200 signatures in support of a solar garden on her Manning Avenue property. Her efforts with U.S. Solar began in June 2017 when an application was filed to amend the city's zoning ordinance for community solar gardens. The company agreed to collaborate with city staff to draft a model ordinance since Grant had nothing on SEE SOLAR GARDEN, PAGE 9A
