Volunteers with handsaws maintain Boundary Waters trails over the decades BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

Watching over the pumpkin patch Carved pumpkin visages created by Scott Kruse, at right, are illuminated by the late morning sun during the Punkinmania celebration at Veterans Memorial Park in Mahtomedi Saturday, Oct. 13. Visitors could choose from hundreds of locally grown pumpkins in a variety of shapes and sizes that Wildwood Lions Club volunteers had picked and transported specifically for the event.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) is celebrating 40 years since the BWCA Wilderness Act, and 40-year Vadnais Heights resident Martin Kubik wants to thank all the volunteers who have maintained the wilderness trails using handsaws over the last several decades. Kubik said he fell in love with the Boundary Waters in 1971 when he came to Minnesota from the Czech Republic— then part of Czechoslovakia—for college. He remembers well the drive north in a friend's ’62 Chevy. “Ever since, I got hooked,” he said. He became a guide on the Gunflint Trail in the ’70s and worked as a seasonal firefighter. When he saw that trails in BWCAW needed help, he founded several organizations to help the U.S. Forest Service with maintenance. In 1990, he founded the 3M Outdoor Club and convinced 115 people to join him in clearing trails near the Boundary Waters, mostly coworkers from 3M. He organized volunteers to cut trees to keep the trails clear from Ely to the Gunflint Trail. He founded the Kekekabic Trail Club, which cleared 3,000 tree falls from the Kekekabic Trail. In 2002, he founded the Boundary SEE BOUNDARY WATERS, PAGE 9A

1 area school — chosen randomly — receives state safety grant BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

MAHTOMEDI — O.H. Anderson Elementary was the only school in the White Bear Lake area to receive funds from the Legislature's school safety grants passed during the 2018 session. Mahtomedi Public Schools will receive $41,000 for safety and security improvements at the school. The district applied for a total of $173,000 in school safety projects, according to Bill Menozzi, director of business services, and Julie Osterbauer, supervisor

of buildings and grounds, who submitted the grant applications to the state. The Legislature approved $25 million in school safety grants but a total of $255.5 million in requests were made, according to the Minnesota Department of Education. High-priority projects were given preference and then chosen at random until the $25 million had been assigned. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Minnesota School Safety Center helped to determine high-priority projects. SEE SAFETY GRANTS, PAGE 9A
