In this issue, readers can find the 2020 Best of the Press Readers’ Choice special section. From best hamburger to best teacher, there are hundreds of winners and finalists named by readers as tops in their field.

An article ran earlier this month stating 84% of newspaper readers vote in elections. Local voters also embraced the Best of the Press contest. More than 25,000 votes were cast by readers in five Best of the Press contests including White Bear Press, Vadnais Press, Quad Community Press, Shoreview Press and The Citizen, which may make these contests the largest in the region. Votes were tallied using a reputable platform, which is also used by the largest media outlets in the country.

Community newspaper readers turn out to be one of the largest voting blocks for political elections and the Best of the Press contests. Those who care to read community newspapers care about local businesses; shop locally; follow school, city, township and county news; and vote.

Cancer survivor thankful for journey

Although it’s important to have open conversation about our struggles, no one wants to be defined by their darkest days.

That is exactly what a White Bear Lake woman has been doing.

Melissa Martyr-Wagner is a threetime breast cancer survivor. Not only that, but she and her husband have their own business, and for much of her journey she has continued working and living life as usual, not defined by her diagnoses.

“I don’t want cancer to change the course of my life,” Martyr-Wagner said.

Martyr-Wagner was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 during a routine visit. She worked to keep the diagnosis a little private. For instance, she had a separate private Facebook account where she posted about her cancer journey, rather than on her personal account. It was a statement that her cancer journey and her identity were not one and the same, but they intertwine.

“For some reason when you have cancer you spend a lot of time comforting other people,” Martyr-Wagner said.

When she was first diagnosed, she

has stage 0, which she considered lucky.

She had radiation and a lumpectomy.

“I didn’t really have it in my family so I wasn’t really worried about it coming back,” Martyr-Wagner said.

In 2013 they were surprised to find that she had the same kind of cancer again, but on her left side. This time it was stage 1.

“With both of these first two cancers we did lumpectomies followed by radiation. The chances of having a recurrence like that is kind of unusual,” Martyr-Wagner said.

WHITE BEAR CITY COUNCIL NOTES WHITE BEAR LAKE — City Council approved the following at its Oct. 13 meeting: • Housing policy community engagement proposal.

The city will spend $15,000 to conduct a community engagement process that will inform the council's housing policy priorities. A housing task force consisting of 16 to 20 people appointed by the mayor and council will also provide recommendations to city leaders.

St. Paul-based Local Initiative Support Corporation and the Center for Policy Planning and Performance will facilitate the process.

City Planner Anne Kane noted that the high-density housing proposal at the four corners of E and Bellaire Avenue several years ago helped precipitate the action.

The project will be funded through the Economic Development Fund.

Councilman Steve Engstran voted against. • A request by Charlene Baker for a special home occupation permit at 3296 Glen Oaks Ave. She plans to operate a hair salon out of a single-family residence. • A request by Lisa Stonehouse of Stonehouse Catering for a conditional use permit at 4466 Centerville Road. The request allows off-site parking of 41 stalls to allow the caterer to expand its offerings to include an event space for private dinners and special events and to conduct cooking classes.

The parking will be located on the adjoining parcel to the north, which is home to Advanced Dermatology clinic.

• Authorized Carbone's owners Liz and Steve Boleen to hold outdoor music from 3-11 p.m. Oct. 24 for a Halloween celebration at 1350 Highway 96. • Voiced no objection to extending the city marina management contract another five years to Jason and Angie Brown, owners of White Bear Boat Works. City Manager Ellen Hiniker said the longtime marina managers are "intimately involved with the city marina and we are pleased with the work they've done." The Browns did not propose a rate increase. • Heard a report from City Engineer Paul Kauppi that the Matoska Park gazebo is unsafe, so the staircase leading to the second floor will be dismantled. People are ignoring caution tape around the structure. There is no money

in the budget at this time to fi x the aging landmark.

Jones was perturbed the gazebo is now closed and feels it should have been identified sooner as in need of maintenance "before taking the drastic step of removing the stairs."

Councilman Kevin Edberg pointed out that the city has other assets that are challenging to maintain.

"I don't know if this one is any more special," he said. "It's a cool place, but we have priorities to balance."

According to Kauppi, the historical society cautioned that the gazebo is far from original and not worth restoring.

There’s an art to being a good bartender — it takes a certain mix of personality and capability, as well as a dash of je ne sais quoi. White Bear Press readers voted: their top choices for best bartender in the city are listed below.

Derek Malchow has worked at several of the most notable bars and restaurants in the area, but Roma Restaurant is the place that feels like home.

“I enjoy the company of people, my regulars,” he said. “If I can be a positive attitude for somebody, that’s all I’m going for.”

Malchow hails from Stillwater, and has worked at Roma for more than five years.

During his time there, he’s grown close to many of his co-workers and regular customers.

“We just want to say how proud we are of Derek,” said Roma general manager Cherie Trudeau. “He’s just an upbeat personality, always has a smile on his face, and is just enjoyable to be around.

The kind of person who makes you want to sit and visit.”

Malchow appreciates that his work family at Roma has allowed him to pursue his goals outside the restaurant walls as well. As the drummer for local metalcore band Time Keeper, his nights are often busy, but the crew at Roma helps him make it work. In fact, he’s not the only musician under the roof. Several other members of the staff are involved in local bands and musical ventures, and they know the gig lifestyle inside and out.

For Lisa Hill, being a bartender is much more than a paycheck — it’s a family. Hill grew up in White Bear Lake, and has worked at Big Wood for six years.

“I call Big Wood the Cheers of White Bear,” Hill said. “I hang out with regulars outside of work when I have a night off.”

In fact, she met her husband while she was working behind the bar.

“He was coming in before I even worked there, and then I met him and we just hit it off,” she said. “We always joke that as long as I bring home beer, we’ll stay married.”

Hill went to school for criminal justice, but later changed gears: “I realized I was too nice for that,” she said. The decision was to the benefit of visitors to Big Wood, who found her amiability more than welcome. “I always wanted to work with people or help people,” she said. At her second job as a personal care assistant, she spends her mornings doing just that, and her evenings among the company of her work family, regulars and first-time visitors excited to try something new.

Bartender’s recommendation: Big Wood Hard Seltzers. “That has been my go-to drink. We make them ourselves and use real fruit in them. I don’t think a lot of people know about our seltzers. We

started doing them right before COVID happened in January. No artificial flavoring at all.” Also worth a try: Oktimberfest, a traditional German Oktoberfest-style Marzen lager.

Second runner-up: Rebecca Jones, Ingredients Café Rebecca Jones’ tenure at Ingredients Café is an impressive one. For the last 11 years, she has been welcoming guests into the farm-to-table restaurant. Her farm in Scandia provides some of the local fresh food used in Ingredients dishes, giving it that extra homemade goodness.

“I think that people like coming here because I create a living room,” she said.

“I like to create a family environment where people feel comfortable, and I’ll introduce them to each other. If you’re in here sitting elbow to elbow with people, you’ll know each others’ names.”

The close-knit, small-town feel of the White Bear Lake community is one of Jones’ favorite things about the job.

“These people have wrapped their arms around me; I feel very blessed,” she said. “I just naturally sort of fell into their life.”

Bartender’s recommendation: “My specialty is my spicy margarita. We use everything from ghost peppers to jalapenos to Hungarian peppers. I have my boys do a simple syrup, and we do a citrus salt-glazed rim shaken with love.

It’s a beautiful margarita.” Also worth a try: Fresh apple ginger-infused martini, with a combination of tart and sweet flavors perfect for fall.

White Bear Jewelers: New store owner maintains family ties When the Andersons decided to sell White Bear Jewelers, the first person they called was Ken’s cousin Jeff Johnson. The two had talked back in February, pre-COVID, at Jeff’s sister’s wedding. Tired of parking problems in downtown Stillwater and unshoveled snow next to empty storefronts, Jeff mentioned he wanted to relocate. The timing was perfect.

Ken and Kathy Anderson always planned to retire to their cabin near Grand Rapids, just not quite yet.

COVID-19 hastened their timeline. They told Johnson that the store was for sale and put their Bald Eagle Lake home on the market. That was around Easter.

The transition to a new owner has taken longer than

both families anticipated, but White Bear Jewelers is now open. Johnson’s specialty is goldsmithing. Yes, he can repair watches, but that side of the jewelry business is no longer economically viable, he said.

Johnson is a second-generation jeweler who grew up in the business. Prior to buying the White Bear store, he owned Johnson Jewelers in Stillwater for seven years. Bob Johnson, Jeff’s dad, owned a store in Woodbury for almost 45 years and helped train Ken in watch repair. Jeff’s forte is custom jewelry design and in-house repair. Residents will be happy to know he bought the polar bear jewelry, too, from Ken and Kathy.

The store is open six days a week in the White Bear Shopping Center, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Andersons are still in the jewelry business, too.

They didn’t retire completely after 25 years in White Bear. Their new store, called White Pine Jewelers, opened this month in Grand Rapids’ Pokegama Plaza.

The decision to leave wasn’t easy, Kathy said, but the impact of COVID-19 on their business made them realize it wasn’t a bad one, either.

They’re working fewer hours and live closer to their children — a son and daughter-in-law in Grand Rapids, a daughter and her family in Sartell and their youngest daughter and her family in Superior. They have two grandchildren.

“Our focus now is on faith, family and a simpler lifestyle,” Kathy happily pointed out. The Andersons bought their cabin in 2006 on the same lake as Ken’s parents, who bought their place in 1971. “We call it Anderson Ohana,” she added. “That’s Hawaiian for family.”

Voters’ Guide

recent column highlighted the Voters’ Guide. I believe this guide is one of the best services we provide to our readers in any election year. With our communities affected by the pandemic, our team took the incentive to run the guides earlier than unusual this year so voters would be prepared for early voting. We also felt it was important to run a second, condensed version of the guide just before the election.

We hope our readers find this to be helpful.

We missed receiving questionnaires from two candidates which were held up in our email spam filter.

We are sorry this happened to Vadnais Heights City Council Candidate Erik Goebel and Grant Mayoral Candidate Jeff Huber. When we were notified Publisher’s we corrected it by publishing their questionnaires in the View following week’s paper and Carter Johnson including them with the rest online. We apologize for any inconvenience to our readers and the candidates. Some candidates chose not to participate.

As a community newspaper, we do not endorse candidates. All we ask our readers is to get out and vote. Local races affect local level services and planning decisions in cities, townships and schools. I’m hopeful that our communities can come together at a local level and put positive energy back into where we live and raise our families. It’s time we get back to what matters in our local neighborhoods, cities and townships where business help provide local jobs.

Fall fishing and hunting My son and I were invited back to a friends cabin on Lake Vermillion for a weekend of fishing over the MEA break. The long weekend was greeted with cold winds and snow. The walleyes seemed nonexistent but we did land a large Northern while trolling.

The nights were clear and full of stars, and for the first time in a long time, I was not distracted by satellites. We hoped for a peak of the northern lights but instead were treated to shooting stars. The evenings around the campfire were especially rewarding as the boys split the wood we burned for the continuous burn of a fire. The group of 12 switched between splitting wood, target shooting and bobber fishing. One morning we woke up to our minnow buckets that had been cleaned out. It was the first time our buckets were raided by a mink, otter or other crafty animal. Our hands stayed warm with zippo hand warmers. We were dressed to the hilt with multiple layers of coats and hats. What a great weekend to finish up the summer.

New puppy Our family was excited to welcome a new puppy after we lost our Westie in June.

Having a puppy is sort of like having a newborn in the home, only you can’t really put a diaper on them, they are hard to contain, and this one really likes to nibble.

Amy and I took shifts the first few weeks.

One of the trainers we spoke with said with all of the people getting pets during the quarantine, it is expected there will be a lot of animals ending up in rescues. If you or your family is interested in a pet, now is the time to get on the pet rescue waiting lists. “COVID puppies” are a real thing and the next few months or year it has been said that it might be the time to consider adoption.

ike many Minnesotans, I grew up pheasant hunting, walking the fields on my family’s farm. It was, and is, a tradition passed from one generation to the next. Pheasant hunting helped instill in me a lifelong respect for the outdoors.

While time-honored traditions – from the State Fair to fireworks on the Fourth of July – have been upended by COVID-19, pheasant hunting is one thing that has largely stayed the same. COVID-19 hasn’t changed the nature of the sport. In fact, basic gun safety requires social Movers & distancing.

Minnesota has Shakers a rich history seizing the Gov. Tim Walz of seasons no matter the conditions, a tradition that can continue even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnesotans can still safely and fully enjoy the three-month pheasant hunting season on our state’s 593,000 acres of public lands in the pheasant range and almost 30,000 walk-in access acres.

For Minnesotans, disappearing for a weekend to hunt, fish or enjoy our state’s natural beauty is a rite of fall. And this year, amid COVID-19, Minnesotans can still

find socially distanced solace in the Minnesota pastime that for so long has connected families with the outdoors.

I was looking forward to this year’s annual Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener celebration in Fairmont. However, I was still able to enjoy this year’s opener and our beautiful fall weather near my hometown of Mankato in a small, socially distanced group. As long as we practice social distancing, mask wearing, and staying in small groups, Minnesotans don’t need to be home-bound this winter.

Minnesotans should continue to stay active while preventing the spread of COVID-19. As the leaves change and the weather gets colder, this year’s pheasant hunting season serves as a well-timed outlet for stress.

The opportunity to spend time outdoors and enjoy the camaraderie of the hunt with friends and family can improve mental health and provide physical, social, and emotional benefits.

It’s important that we continue to seek out the hobbies and passions that get us outside and into our communities. Not only does it benefit our mental health, but it supports our natural habitats and boosts our economy during a particularly challenging time for Minnesota’s working families.

The Minnesota Department

of Natural Resources (DNR) estimates that in 2019, more than 52,00 people hunted pheasants in Minnesota alone. By last Friday, the DNR had already sold 50,481 pheasant stamps, up 13% from last year. From hunting equipment to travel, hunting energizes local economies and contributes more than 12,400 jobs and $733 million to the state economy.

Minnesota is one of the top pheasant-hunting states in the country. Decades of conservation efforts by Minnesotans made that possible. Each hunt supports our conservation efforts. Funding from hunting licenses provides resources to fight soil erosion, improve water quality and benefit wildlife species.

Beyond the conservation, commerce and mental health benefits, pheasant hunting is a valuable part of Minnesota’s cultural heritage. It allows Minnesotans to take advantage of the many opportunities in our state to get outside, while still doing their part to keep their neighbors healthy.

Whether you’re a lifelong hunter or you’re wearing the blaze orange for the first time this year, I hope you have a safe season and successful hunting.

I was disappointed to read Heather Gustafson’s letter, in which the author vilified the good name of city council member Bob Morse. Residents can disagree and make an argument for their position and gracefully accept the outcomes, but to go this low is not representative of the Vadnais Heights community I embrace. Folks like Heather seem to think the city should act only on their wishes and that any differing view isn’t worthy to be considered. But the City Council represents all of us, not just a minority full of “passionate intensity.” Development is necessary to keep our city vital and mitigate the tax burden.

Without it, the city goes into decline and taxes are paid by fewer people. These are tough choices council members are asked to make; to suggest that a person of impeccable character is doing something underhanded is way overblown and better suited for the theatrics of our national politics.

I’m writing as a 24-year resident of Vadnais Heights to encourage fellow residents to vote for Bob Morse for City Council. I’ve known Bob personally for 26 years and he is an outstanding individual of impeccable character who will continue to serve the city and residents very well. Bob is someone we can safely rely on to be a good steward of the city’s resources and will bring a fiscally responsible voice to decisions facing the city in the coming years. To keep our city vibrant and healthy, we will need to make decisions that require a common-sense approach. I believe Bob Morse is the right person for this role. Bob has shown his commitment to serving his community by volunteering for several local business, education and service groups. Bob has also made a significant positive impact working with our local businesses as a community banker.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, please join me in voting for Bob Morse for Vadnais Heights City Council. Together, our votes will make a positive impact on the future of Vadnais Heights.

Birchwood is a great place to live, and that’s why our family chose to move back here with family in 2017, after I grew up here. I am running for City Council to make sure our village continues to thrive, and I hope to earn your vote.

As a member of the Birchwood Utility committee, I serve our village; and, as an engineer, I understand how complex city projects are and how important attention to detail is to our bottom line. Replacement of the recently installed Wildwood lift station will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and we need to manage this project better than in the past and plan road, water and sewer infrastructure with an eye on long-term budgets and dry basements.

We need to make it easier and clearer what residents and contractors can do to build and renovate and revise our codes to make them more straightforward and less subject to the council’s interpretation. We should contract with one of the building departments of nearby cities to ensure that advice and guidance is available to streamline the construction process. We should also make it clear on the city’s website how the process works — from submitting plans to getting approval to completing inspections. Since Birchwood’s land parcels look like a jigsaw puzzle, we will need to be accommodating as we encourage projects that improve the character of our village.

I’m excited for the Lake Links trail to come to our city. With it, we should improve and better maintain some of our aging park facilities, making Birchwood more appealing as it becomes more connected to our surroundings.

I am looking forward to a great future in Birchwood.

Many of our neighbors have lived here for a long time, and our new neighbors will remain in Birchwood for many years. Wise decisions now will benefit us for years into the future. It’s critical that we run Birchwood well.

Wazlawik listened to the citizens of White Bear exposed to TCE pollution caused by Water Gremlin. She worked closely with the Neighborhood Concerned Citizens Group (NCCG) a group of residents who live near Water Gremlin and the greater community, who may now have an increased risk of cancer due to the TCE exposure. She attended public events at North Campus to hear from the public. Then she went to work authoring a bill to ban TCE. Acting to pass a law to ban TCE a chemical known to cause cancer is acting to protect the citizens of White Bear Lake and the greater state. Rep. Ami Wazlawik has demonstrated that she understands that and will act in our behalf.

Her Water Gremlin work is a great example, where she spent time listening and researching the issue and the science provided. She then introduced the legislation that was signed into law in 2020 to ban TCE. That is what we need, a track record of responsiveness and hard work to better our community. PAID LETTER Who is packing the courts?

Questions about whether Joe Biden and Kamala Harris plan to "pack the court" that have been raised by their Republican opponents are designed to obfuscate the facts. “Packing the court" has been President Trump's mission; he boasts at rallies about his Supreme Court nominees and how many judges he has appointed to other federal benches. Not to be outdone in packing the court, Republican senators refused to even consider President Obama's nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, when there were months left in his term, but now have made an abrupt about-face and are pushing through Judge Amy Coney Barrett just days before the election.

These actions are purely partisan and hypocritical.

The real question for Biden and Harris is, "If elected, how would you govern our nation to assure all Americans equal rights under the law, given that the Trump administration and Republican allies have already packed the courts with individuals they expect will rule to suppress voter rights, continue viewing corporations as people, further restrict women's access to reproductive health care and toss out the Affordable Care Act, leaving 29.8 million Americans without health care?"

PAID LETTER Chamberlain thoughtful on budget issues The COVID-19 virus will have a negative impact on the state's budget to the tune of $4-5 billion come January 2021. The state is prohibited from borrowing, so the legislators we elect on Nov. 3 will have to raise taxes, reduce spending or both.

Our state senator, Roger Chamberlain, believes “all” spending should be on the table for consideration. Most economists agree that raising taxes in a recession (virus driven recession) will delay the recovery and may cause the recession to deepen.

Do you want your taxes increased again? Raising taxes on the families of Minnesota is an easy process; it does not take much thought. However, taking a longterm pragmatic position is hard work. Sen. Chamberlain has been doing this hard work for many years.

Remember, he's the senator who fought the good fight for a reduction in taxes on the middle class last year. The DFL Legislature raised taxes on Minnesota families by $2.1 billion in 2013. This one vote has raised a cumulative $12 billion in new taxes on the backs of Minnesotans.

It is your decision: Minnesota citizen, do you want your taxes increased again, or do you want a thoughtful approach to balancing the state budget?

PAID LETTER Return Stacey to school board I'm writing to support Stacey Stout for reelection to the Mahtomedi School Board. I have known Stacey since we served together on the Mahtomedi Finance Commission. Stacey has also served on the Mahtomedi Community Education Advisory Council, the 916 Education Foundation Board and the White Bear Area YMCA Community Board. In each of these roles, she has shown that she is a person of integrity who is committed to our community.

As a current member of the school board, Stacey is committed to efficient use of school funding, which is critical during these difficult and uncertain times. Our school district is the pride of our community, and Stacey is committed to seeing that the academic excellence continues.

PAID LETTER Best choice: Erik Goebel, Steve Rogers We need Steve Rogers and Erik Goebel on our Vadnais Heights City Council. Both are creative thinkers.

Erik promoted the visionary idea of a brewery for the Garceau property as a member of the Garceau Task Force. Improving our sense of community with a gathering place like a brewery affords residents a destination to socialize. Steve has great ideas for helping to keep our aging housing stock attractive and affordable to maintain. They think ahead. The pandemic will affect our businesses and they see a need to plan for that.

Each has expressed a strong commitment to listening to citizens and soliciting citizen input. I did not see that level of interest expressed by other candidates. If the council operates without input and participation of its citizens, we all pay the price. If you want a responsive City Council that plans ahead, the best choice is Erik Goebel and Steve Rogers.

PAID LETTER Candidates will support inclusivity, sustainability Vadnais Heights needs Erik Goebel and Steve Rogers on the city council. The current city council members including Bob Morse do not represent the community members' views on important issues such as inclusivity and sustainability. Proposals have been brought to the city council to form a human rights commission and to sign up for the Green Step Cities program and these proposals have been rejected or simply not acted on. Erik and Steve have pledged to make Vadnais Heights a more inclusive and sustainable community by embracing and taking action on these program proposals. Awareness of racial and ethnic disparity is at an all time high right now and rather than creating an ongoing commission, the current council formed a temporary task force that has yet to officially meet or draft goals. I personally brought the Green Step Cities proposal to the city council in 2019 and it was rejected by the council in spite of the many benefits it would bring the city. Bob Morse said he doesn't like the program because it is from another country and other MN cities have rejected it.

Actually, it was created by the MPCA and 140 MN cities are currently benefitting from the program (4 cities have rejected it primarily for political reasons). I have worked with both Erik and Steve and they are ready to represent the residents of Vadnais Heights.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • A resident in the 4000 block of Elmwood Street on Sept.

28 reported her identy stolen and used to open credit card accounts. The complainant is in the process of making restorative notifications.

• A Shoreview woman reported the rear window of her vehicle vandalized by a rock overnight Sept. 28-29 as it was parked in the 1100 block of County Road D. • A resident in the 3900 block of Woodridge Court on Sept. 30 reported unauthorized transactions on his bank account. The case number will be provided to bank investigators.

• A Lino Lakes woman reported hats and the vehicle's title stolen from her vehicle Sept. 30 as it was left unlocked in her work parking lot in the 500 block of Oak Grove Parkway the previous day.

• A Minneapolis man, 42, was arrested at 6:21 p.m. Oct. 3 for assault in the 1000 block of County Road D, following a trilogy of domestic dispute calls from that same address throughout that evening.

White Bear Township • Six locked vehicles belonging to high school students were reported broken into at 4:45 a.m. Sept. 27 as they were parked in a driveway in the 2700 block of Lake Avenue and along the street overnight. Items stolen included vehicle manuals, credit cards, clothing, change and miscellaneous paperwork. Possible suspect items were collected for DNA testing.

• Management of Bald Eagle Liquor in the 5900 block of Highway 61 reported two males for stealing seven bottles of tequila and cognac Sept. 27 after they distracted the clerk and bolted from the store with the liquor.

• A White Bear Lake man reported his vehicle broken into Sept. 29 as it was parked in the 5000 block of Hugo Road while the complainant was out fishing on Bald

Eagle Lake. A backpack containing package stickers was stolen.

• A Plymouth man reported his vehicle broken into Sept. 29 as it was parked in the 5000 block of Hugo Road while he was out fishing on Bald Eagle Lake. The front passenger side window was broken in, and a CD case with 20 music CD's stolen.

• An Elk River man reported his vehicle broken into Sept. 30 while it was parked at his place of employment in the 4500 block of Allendale Drive. A wallet was stolen and the credit cards it contained were used fraudulently.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen off a Toyota Prius overnight Sept. 30-Oct. 1 as it was parked in the 5300 block of Bald Eagle Blvd.

• Sunglasses, a key box and battery jump pack were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 2600 block of South Shore Boulevard overnight Sept.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

a traffic stop for window tint violation Sept. 22 in the 3000 block of East County Line Road after deputies smelled marijuana and found it in the vehicle along with other paraphernalia. The search yielded more items, and deputies confiscated them all for evidence and testing to determine their course of action regarding the motorist.

Grant • A male motorist was cited Sept. 25 in the 6000 block of Lake Elmo N. for use of a wireless device while driving, after deputies observed the driver with a cell phone up to his ear. The motorist admitted to answering a phone call and using the phone while driving.

• An unnamed motorist was cited at 1:45 a.m. Sept. 26 on 75th Street N. and Inwood Way N. for speeding. During the traffic stop, Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies thought they had caught a whiff of marijuana and conducted a search. They found nothing marijuana-related, however.

Mahtomedi • A driving student was cited Sept. 22 on northbound Century Avenue and Wildwood Road for driving on a learner's permit without a valid driver in the vehicle, after being pulled over for “very loud exhaust” and a license plate in the back window. He was verbally warned about the substandard equipment.

• A motorist was released at the scene of

22 reported receiving a phone call claiming that someone had his Social Security number and was using it to buy drugs. The complainant said he thought it was a scam and didn't give out any information, and deputies agreed.

• A Lyft driver reported an intoxicated passenger at 10:58 p.m. Sept. 22 on Mahtomedi Avenue and Quail Street.

The driver said the passenger became upset and tried to grab him when he called deputies. While deputies were on the scene, the subject emerged from the woods in a very intoxicated state. Deputies contacted the passenger's fiancée to pick him up.

• A suspicious vehicle was reported early Sept. 25 on Mahtomedi Avenue and Maple Street. Deputies later located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. As a result, several citations were issued to the driver and passenger.

Pine Springs • A Minnesota motorist was cited at 7:01 p.m. Sept. 19 on westbound Highway 36 at the ramp to southbound I-694 for speeding 83 mph in a 55 mph zone and for seat belt violation by deputies on stationary patrol who clocked him on radar at 310 feet. The driver, whose attitude was described at good, admitted to speeding and not wearing the seat belt.

• A motorist was arrested Sept. 21 on Highway 36 for driving after cancellation due to unsafe behavior, following a traffic stop for seat belt violation.

• An SUV driver was cited Sept. 21 on Highway 36 and I-694 for speeding 69 mph in a 55 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol in the center median monitoring westbound traffic for speed violations. The driver apologized for speeding and stated he'd set his cruise control in the 65 mph zone and forgot to adjust it downward.

• An unbelted driver was cited Sept. 22 on northbound I-694 at the Highway 36 ramp for speeding 71 mph in a 55 mph zone and failure to wear a seat belt. As the vehicle passed deputies at 71 mph, they observed the driver reach over and grab his seat belt. The driver admitted to not wearing his seat belt because he was “from farm country.”

• A wanna-be intoxicated driver was cited at 1:00 a.m. Sept. 25 on Highway 36 and Hilton Trail N. for speeding 79 mph in a 55 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol. After deputies observed the driver's glazed eyes and odor of alcohol, they administered a field sobriety test.

The driver barely passed, registering a .077 on the pbt.

• A biker on what deputies described as a “crotch rocket” was cited Sept. 25 on westbound Highway 36 at I-694 for speeding 102 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Deputies described the rider's attitude as very good: he stopped immediately and admitted to passing a car and wasn’t surprised at how fast he was going.

Willernie • A Minnesota woman was cited Sept. 22 on Stillwater Road at Wildwood Road for hands-free violation after deputies observed her tapping on the phone while driving. Deputies described the woman as argumentative and upset about the citation. However, she did admit to using her phone to change the music for her children while at the stop sign.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following selected incidents: • Theft was reported in the 3500 block of McKnight Road Oct. 8.

• On Oct. 8, two men were mailed citations for a misdemeanor theft incident that occurred Sept. 20 at a business in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road.

• Damage to property was reported in the 2400 block of Cedar Avenue Oct. 8, and a video surveillance of the suspect was available.

Washington County extends deadline for tax payments Some homeowners and small businesses in Washington County will have until Nov. 16 to pay their 2020 property tax without penalty due to the fi nancial impact of COVID-19.

The extension applies to taxpayers who own non-escrow commercial/industrial properties with 2020 total tax due of $100,000 or less, and non-escrow residential properties (homesteaded and non-homesteaded) and rural vacant land. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced that prospective drivers can now take the class D knowledge test online at home with a parent, guardian or adult 21-plus monitoring the student during the test. Testing is also available at the DVS Exam Stations and at third-party testing locations. Students can fi nd more information and request the online test by going to drive.mn.gov and select “Take a Class D Knowledge Test.”

A virtual broadcast of the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation business awards event will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.

OBITUARY NOTICE 1924-2020 Grace passed away peacefully October 16, 2020 at age 96 with her daughter Diane by her side & her family’s love surrounding her. Grace was born May 9, 1924 in Stanton, MN. She lived in Cannon Falls, MN and New York as a young child. She moved to Hugo at age 10 when her parents opened Traeger’s Restaurant. In the 40 years her family owned the restaurant Grace made many life-long friends. She was a 1941 WBLHS graduate & attended the University of MN. Grace married her high school sweetheart, Lt. Douglas A. Chambers in 1943. The couple was stationed in VA and NC before Doug went overseas. Tragically, Grace became a widow at age 20 when Doug was killed near Normandy on June 7, 1944. After moving to MI, she met & married the love of her life, Edward Waugh in 1945. In 1949, Ed contracted Polio & was hospitalized for 8 months.

Grace was by Ed’s side throughout his lengthy illness & rehabilitation. Although Ed was never able to walk again, Grace & Ed enjoyed a full life. They worked sideby-side as business owners (Edward’s Motel & Waugh Assoc. Tax Accounting), travelled with close friends, & most importantly, raised their daughters; Connie, Kathy & Diane.

The lights of Grace's life were her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. She loved making music at church with Connie, working with Kathy during tax seasons, and spending the day running errands & stopping for a “quick bite” with Diane. She loved to spoil her grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Her pantry was always stocked with everyone’s favorite foods. She loved to cook and no one ever left her house hungry. If family, friends or neighbors had a concert, play or sporting event, Grace was there, 20 minutes early, to cheer them on.

Grace was proud to be a Hugonion. She was active in many community organizations including the Lion’s Club, Historical Commission (founding member) & WBLHS Alumni Assoc. She loved music & enjoyed singing with the Silver Harmony Singers & the First Presbyterian Church Choir. Grace was a member of First Presbyterian Church WBL for 68 years. She served as a Deacon & volunteered in countless other capacities.

Grace served God through her kindness & compassion. She always had a smile, a hug, & a piece of candy for everyone she met. She looked for ways to help people through their times of crisis & she could always

see the good in every situation. She was someone you could always count on to be there for you. Grace truly loved people unconditionally & will be missed by many more than can be named here: She is preceded in death by her first husband Doug Chambers, husband of 54 years Edward Waugh, & parents Walter & Irene Traeger. She is survived by her daughters Connie (Donald) Hamilton; Kathy (Neil) Peltier; & Diane (Gary) Lovas. Grandchildren Curt (Tanya) Hamilton, Sharie (Michael) Howard; Cole Peltier; Christi (Drew) Peterson; Wayd (Jeana) Lovaas; Kelli (Rob) Galceran; Amber (Barry) Hand; and Noel (Sara) Lovas. When a castle in Ireland seemed too fanciful and the perfect barn too uncommon, a Minnetonka couple found the perfect compromise for their new home: an old church turned theater turned vacant.

Luck played a part in their discovery of the former Lakeshore Players Theatre at 4820 Stewart Ave. in White Bear Lake.

And Kelly Clement and Steve Bucher are quite thrilled about it.

A woman who works for Clement was told by her Realtor cousin last Thanksgiving that the building had been sold.

She told him that her boss was looking for an old church and would its new buyer, a local builder, be interested in selling? The answer was yes. So Clement and Bucher drove to White Bear Lake the day after Thanksgiving to see the property. You could say it was love at first sight.

They bought it, closing on the property Jan. 31. The old 1889 church was saved in the nick of time as the structure was due for demolition.

Why a church? “I’ve always wanted a castle in England or Ireland or a ruin to build a house around,” Bucher replied.

“Kelly always wanted to rebuild a barn.

A church seems to slot in the middle of those visions. It addresses both of our desires.”

The main attraction for the couple was the stage. They are both musicians who play multiple instruments, including Bucher’s 9-foot concert grand piano, and the stage offers a permanent spot for their equipment. Jam sessions with other musicians are also in their plans.

They believe the venue will be “sought after when people in the music community find out what we have.” Clement used to hold garage jam parties and “loves to invite neighbors over and play music together.”

Both admit they didn’t realize the intensive remodeling project they were getting themselves into. In the end, they fully believe the investment will be worth it.

The couple partnered with Legacy Contracting Inc. of Elk River to tackle the job. Co-owner Jeff Eirich said the first time he entered the old theater, the power was off, so flashlights were required. “It was still the theater,” Eirich recalled. “The stage and seats were still here. We were crawling around looking at the structure.”

That was in January, and the contractor’s team has been there every day since. Eirich figures at least 50 people are involved in the challenging project.

Progress is slow but steady.

An unexpected, but glorious, snafu to the project is the installation of a set of fabulous stained-glass windows they rescued from an appalling fate.

“The windows fell into our lap in a weird way,” Bucher said. “The original windows were sold when the Lutheran church left and replaced with a lowgrade colored glass called kokomo.

They’re crazy expensive to replicate. We asked a stained-glass guy in Minneapolis if he ever salvages something that size. He said, ‘Funny you should ask.’

He showed us this historic glass from the 1880s that he said could end up in a dumpster.”

Curious passersby stop in on a daily basis, Eirich said. “Neighbors tell us their children were baptized in the church or they attended a wedding there. People are glad it still looks like a church.”

Originally a Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in the 1880s, the building on the corner of Stewart and Sixth Street later became a Baptist Church (in 1959), the beginnings of what has become Eagle Brook Church, noted Historical Society Executive Director Sara Hanson. “There were two Lutheran churches on Stewart a block or two apart. One was German and one was Swedish. Eventually, they merged to become First Lutheran and ultimately

moved down by County Road F. Today, the church is Community of Grace.”

Lakeshore Players Theatre purchased the property in 1969 after its first home on Second Street burned down. That building was a former Presbyterian Church that the theater purchased in 1957. Lakeshore vacated the Stewart Avenue theater when the new Hanifl Performing Arts Center was completed.

Clement and Bucher are aware of the building’s long history; it’s the oldest surviving church building in White Bear Lake. They consider it a landmark that should be preserved and want to keep it as original as possible.

The Douglas fir floor will be refinished and the lighting kept as original as possible. “It’s hard to grasp all the work the contractors have put into this,” Clement said. “We are here every day to say, ‘yes do that’ or ‘no, let’s not do that.’”

Other highlights for the interior are a 20-foot, ornate 1880 wooden bar, complete with mirror, salvaged from a Boyd, Wisconsin, tavern that will sit house left. Legacy is refinishing the large piece. Bucher is getting his dream German kitchen and the master bedroom will be lofted above the entrance.

A dual water closet will occupy the old box office space to the left of the foyer.

A 500-gallon koi pond is also part of the remodeled foyer. The outside brick sign will stay with some sort of plaque and the front will be landscaped like an English garden with black wrought-iron fence.

The theater’s 3,500-square-foot basement has been turned into three bedrooms, a bath, living area and large storage/office space. The room is well suited for Clement, who works from home as a commercial/residential audio/video rep. Bucher is a retired electrical engineer and patent attorney. He retired at 45 after selling his business to a California competitor.

Solar panels will be installed on the new roof in the energy-efficient home, which has three heat pump systems that continually circulate hot water. The only gas required — besides the kitchen range — is to heat the garage. Everything else is electric. They figure the solar payback will take six years.

“City staff have been great to work with,” noted Clement, who is originally from East Grand Forks. And they love White Bear Lake.

Although they wouldn’t say how much they’ve sunk into their dream home, the project is in the multimillion-dollar range, according to Clement, who jokingly adds, “we’ve lost our minds.”

“We knew it would be more work than we thought, added Bucher. “This isn’t one of those projects where this is the plan, let’s stick to it. This is more a vague vision that is evolving.”

Asked their target move-in date, both laughed and said, “What year?” They hope to occupy their “castle” in January. That would be 2021.

BREAST CANCER: Survivor shares story FROM PAGE 1A

This is especially shocking since Martyr-Wagner was tested for the BRCA gene, the one that can indicate an increased risk of breast cancer. She tested negative both times.

“In 2017 they found my third breast cancer on the right side, and it was a completely different kind,” Martyr-Wagner said.

This time it was stage 2, and she had a double mastectomy (the removal of both breasts) and underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

While the disease attempted to leave its mark on Martyr-Wagner, she had other plans: reconstruction.

“I just wanted to be able to be back out on the lake after all of this,” Martyr-Wagner said. She wanted a return to normalcy, or as normal as possible.

When you have cancer and lose your hair, Martyr-Wagner explained, people you barely know will notice the change and start talking about it with you.

Martyr-Wagner didn’t want to be known as the woman with cancer or the woman who had cancer, she just wanted to be Melissa.

Martyr-Wagner noted that reconstruction was one of the hardest parts of the whole process. She had three reconstructive surgeries, one of which took

nine hours and included taking some skin from her stomach.

Despite all of the hardship she endured, Melissa credits her friends with helping to lift her spirits through it all.

“I had an awful lot of support. When I was going to chemo my friends set up a sign up sheet where they would come with me. We just made it fun,” Martyr-Wagner said.

During the time she was battling cancer, she and her husband opened their own business, New Studio Architecture, in 2011. They first opened near the Kowalski’s in White Bear Lake, and later moved to St. Paul.

“My husband was at another firm for quite a long time. I thought he had a great business mind. I just thought it would be great if we could put the places we want to work and the places we don’t want to work into practice,” Martyr-Wagner said.

They created a business that values their employees and their time. She continued to work and to persevere through her illness.

She also lives life with a bit of a new motto given her close calls in the past, even before her cancer diagnoses.

“I had a roll over car accident once. I just think it’s really important to not save all of the good wine in

your cupboard and whatnot because you never know what day will be your last,” Martyr-Wagner said.

That is how she lives – enjoying an active life of sailing, tennis and spending time with friends and family. Perhaps at this point, no struggle will define her.

The first step to ALM would be neighborhood meetings and individual contacts followed by an open house, surveys and media engagement.

Fish stocking and vegetation management would also be part of the ALM. Asked what type of fish would be stocked, Belfiori said they would work with DNR fisheries experts on both fish removal and stocking. Bass would likely be introduced since the species feeds on bullheads.

Estimated costs for 2021 actions are $30,000 to $60,000 to be split 50-50 with the city.

Further projects were mentioned for 2022 and beyond that could involve alum

treatments to bind the phosphorus, aeration to keep fish alive and treatment for curlyleaf pondweed. Those programs would be much more costly.

Following the presentation, staff wanted to know: Does council have reservations about the program?

Councilman Dan Jones, who sits on the VLAWMO board, said the lake needs help.

"Residents don't all agree on a plan, but we need to get this lake healthy. It just became more visible because of Polar Chev and a resident who took trees down," he said.

Councilman Kevin Edberg said he appreciates the commitment to engagement with residents. "We welcome that aspect," he told the administrator.

FREE TRIP CHARGE

COVID relief funds not yet depleted WHITE BEAR LAKE — Community members might get another chance to garner grants from the COVID relief fund.

To date, all approved programs have launched. Some programs have seen substantial usage, while others have had lower-than-anticipated levels of response. The city is working to determine additional opportunities to expend some of the $1.92 million it received from the federal government as part of the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security).

Recommendations will be brought to the City Council at its Oct. 27 meeting.

In the meantime, council received an update on existing grant programs at its Oct. 13 meeting from Housing & Economic Development Coordinator Tracy Shimek: • Resident assistance. Initial response was slow, but staff is seeing an uptick in applications as word gets out. Of the $250,000 allocated to the program, there are five approved grants totaling $6,700.

Seven are pending.

• Nonprofit assistance. Staff has received six applications, but a final number was not provided as the program just closed Oct. 12. Staff does not anticipate requests to exceed the $100,000 allocated to the program.

• Restaurant meal delivery. Of $20,000 allocated, $7,700 has been expended.

The innovative program involves NewTrax, which so far has delivered almost 800 meals to senior housing facilities from seven participating restaurants. Plans are underway to garner additional foundation and community financial support to extend the

program beyond the funding timeline.

Food distribution at the White Bear YMCA, for example, is starting up again.

• Mental health assistance. Northeast Youth and Family Services reports that the $30,000 allocated to the program for individual listening sessions has not been used. Staff is exploring other options with the organization to use the funding.

• Business assistance grants. Based on applications received, the program is oversubscribed with eligible applications in excess of the $250,000 allocated. The application period closed Oct. 5, however, final eligibility determinations are still being made by the administrator.

Thirty businesses that have not received state or county relief are eligible for $240,000 in grants. Another 13 applicants who have received state or county grants would be eligible for $100,570, bringing the total amount of awards to $340,570.

Staff recommends fully funding the 30 and asked council to decide whether to allocate additional funding. Councilman Bill Walsh said he favors fully funding the need for business grants, pointing out the closure of Evans Music during the pandemic. "That is a treasure of a business, a devastating loss," Walsh said. "It will be difficult to restart that business in White Bear Lake."

Council agreed to allocate an additional $90,570 in funding so all eligible applicants received the full amount of awards they are eligible to receive.

noted that VLAWMO is no longer pursuing a temporary boating restriction or a state alum grant to reduce phosphorus levels in the lake.

The grant involved too many rigid restrictions for a term of 15 years, he said.

The new vision, the ALM approach, involves stakeholder engagement and a financial partnership with the city. The process would be more transparent, he said, "with incremental results and clear communication."

The outcome would be the same: improved water quality and a healthier lake.

Belfiori said both residents and businesses will benefit from a healthy Goose Lake in areas such as visual appeal, property values and watershed connections. The lake is the headwaters for

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The Vadnais Lake Area Water Management Organization (VLAWMO) has a new vision for a healthier East Goose Lake.

Considered a "gateway to the city from Highway 61," the shallow lake is considered impaired, according to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. It is above state standards for phosphorus and chlorophyll, has almost zero vegetation and no game fish.

The city's environmental specialist, Connie Taillon, is working with VLAWMO to implement several water resources protection projects, including a program for Goose called adaptive lake management (ALM).

Results of an online station design survey were summarized earlier this month for the Rush Line Policy Advisory Committee (PAC). White Bear Lake Mayor Jo Emerson chairs the group.

The $450 million (estimates vary) Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is a proposed 15-mile route with 21 stops between Union Depot in Lowertown St. Paul and downtown White Bear Lake. Buses will operate daily every 10 to 15 minutes once the transit line opens, anticipated in 2026.

The project is led by Ramsey County in partnership with the Met Council, Metro Transit and MnDOT, as well as municipalities along the route.

There were 471 responses to the online station design survey, conducted June 24-Aug. 1 in English, Spanish, Hmong, Karen and Somali. Locally, 137 responses came from White Bear residents, 14 from Vadnais Heights and one from Gem Lake. A total of 54 people who work in those communities also responded.

Topics of interest included safety and security at stations, landscaping, bicycle access, enclosed shelters and parking.

A sampling of responses highlighted for the committee included the following: • More than 60% use mass transit at least sometimes; 9% daily; 37% never.

• Safety at stations was the most popular choice when asked what would encourage respondents to use BRT. That was followed by safe pedestrian connections to stations.

• Top Rush Line destinations were downtown St. Paul; the east side for Hmong Village and Lake Phalen; Maplewood for medical appointments, transit center, shopping and transfers to other routes; Vadnais Heights for the TCO Sports Center and White Bear Lake for restaurants, shopping and recreation.

• Special events, rush hours and weekend afternoons are the most popular times for use.

• Secure bicycle parking, wayfi nding signage, public art and landscaping are most desired.

Additional comments included an interest in station size and siting, interest in pedestrian improvements in White Bear Lake, concern about impacts to the

Bruce Vento Regional Trail and the perceived lack of need for the project in light of changes in travel patterns due to COVID-19.

The PAC also learned the Federal Transit Administration awarded a $1.25 million grant for planning transit-oriented development at Rush Line stations.

The project is still in the two-year environmental analysis phase. The next steps include advancing the stormwater analysis, submitting remaining layouts to MnDOT, refining ridership forecast, and updating capital and operating cost estimates for the environmental assessment. Construction of the Rush Line BRT is expected to begin in 2024. Construction cost is estimated at $420 to $470 million.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5A) PAID LETTER Wazlawik supports bipartisan police reform I am responding to a paid letter last week that accused Ami Wazlawik of voting to defund the police.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Ami, along with her House DFL colleagues, passed a police reform bill in June of this year that was later modified into a bipartisan bill supporting police reform, which was passed in July. Neither the House version nor the final bipartisan bill supported defunding the police.

On her website, Ami declares that she “… supported bipartisan police reform legislation…” These are not the actions of someone who wants to defund the police.

If you really want to criticize Ami, criticize her for something Republicans don’t support. For example, she supports high-quality, affordable health care for Minnesotans, which Republicans didn’t support; she voted for background checks for firearm purchases, which Republicans didn’t support; she co-authored legislation that would encourage whistleblowers when companies pollute, which Republicans didn’t support.

Oh, and her website is full of legislation she voted for which had bipartisan support and which was passed and signed into law.

So, if you don’t care for the legislation Ami supports, by all means vote for her opponent, but at least do the research so you know what she supports and what she is against.

PAID LETTER Wazlawik will keep people safe COVID-19 is a difficult challenge for all of us. This is especially true for our seniors, which is why they deserve political representatives who understand the severity of this disease and the intelligence and grit to do the right thing.

I am writing to whole-heartedly endorse Ami Wazlawik for reelection for House District 38B. Ami has done so much for our community. From taking on community safety issues like Water Gremlin to fighting for our schools, Ami makes decisions that will benefit our community and everyone in it.

Ami’s qualifications, life experience and legislative accomplishments stand on their own. That’s why I am so frustrated with what’s coming from her opponent’s campaign.

Her opponent, Elliot Engen, is someone I recently graduated White Bear Lake High School with. While I was initially surprised by his candidacy, I’ve become disturbed by his public stances. He doesn’t seem to understand what so many of those I care about and care for know well: that COVID-19 is devastating, and that we must listen to experts to get us through this (re: Our misinterpretation of COVID – May 6, 2020).

COVID-19 is not something where the severity is up for debate. I don’t get screened every day and tested every week at work to allow politicians to say we should be less dedicated to keeping our seniors safe.

I truly do not believe that someone who is just a few years out of high school can be an effective advocate for our community. It’s exciting to think we have all the answers but being humble and willing to listen to those with expertise is needed to make the best decisions.

This is why Ami is the leader we need. She understands what it means to work hard and research the issues. Her life experience, from being an advocate on behalf of sexual assault survivors to working in our schools, has prepared her for her legislative career. I know personally that Ami is considerate, compassionate and committed to us. She fights for my family and she will continue to fight for yours.

Concerning changes for Vadnais Heights There are dark clouds appearing in Vadnais Heights.

Recently, anonymous agents were digging for dirt on council members using the “Freedom Of Information” process. This cost the city many hours of staff time and legal fees. These anonymous agents were on a fishing expedition for anything they might find to discredit council members. When no bombshells were found, they resorted to becoming the “thought police,” disagreeing with individual personal and religious beliefs and thoughts.

This is very dangerous, because it moves the politics of Vadnais Heights away from open public discussion of the votes and decisions made by the City Council and starts the process of personal attacks and the bullying of others based on their personal beliefs.

Vadnais Heights citizens need to consider only the voting history of elected officials and to stay away from personal attacks.

Celebrating Fall Fall is always a nostalgic time for me. This year we are enjoying a stunner, with colors off the charts. It has brought up memories of when we used to heat our home with wood. I would cut wood at my friend’s farm.

Racist letter In response to the “Reparations” letter published on 10/14/20, I, along with numerous friends, family and colleagues, were disappointed to read such an inaccurate and, yes, racist, letter.

We can start with the writer’s error in identifying the bill’s House sponsor. The Representative’s name is Sheila Jackson Lee, not “Shirley” Jackson Lee. More important, a quick and simple Google search for the actual text of H.R. 40 would have informed the writer that the bill doesn’t call for any “reparations to Blacks”, or for the writers family to pay anything to anybody, nor does it contain any of the other itemized claims of the writer. The bill simply establishes a “Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals….Among other requirements, the commission shall identify...forms of discrimination in the public and private sectors against freed slaves and their descendants….” All of the upstanding residents of White Bear Lake that I know agree it is a positive and good thing to examine the effects of historical discrimination in this great nation of ours, and to examine the feasibility of making meaningful amends. Fighting for justice and righting wrongs is what America is all about. It is what led our founding fathers to fight for freedom.

If the writer truly thinks descendants of Union soldiers who lost their lives should receive reparations because these descendants have continued to suffer institutional hardships and injustice in their lives in the many generations since the Civil War, then he is encouraged to contact his members of Congress to sponsor such a bill.

And the writer’s final sentence is a classic example of racism by those who claim they are not racist, along the lines “some of my favorite colleagues are black”.

These people just don’t get it. Our hope is for a nation where organizations such as the “United Negro College Fund” are unnecessary due to the evolution of a truly just and equal land of opportunity for all.

Nothing normal for families Walking with my family through downtown White Bear on a recent warm evening I was naively shocked to see all the patrons crowded inside the local bar, enjoying a drink. I have a first grader in White Bear Lake schools who can only go to class 2 days a week. I also have a 2-year-old who attends a local preschool. His school is shut down for two weeks right now because the teacher has Covid. We all had to quarantine and get tested. My husband and I are barely holding it all together, trying to keep our jobs and provide homeschool 3 days a week. For over 6 months we have kept our two active children mostly at home. We have missed visiting our family in other states and doing all the things that make life fun for a kid. Sadly, our government’s Covid response has been a complete failure. I wish we could at least come together as a community to prioritize our kids going to school, over socializing in bars and restaurants. We need to get his virus under control so we can get back to normal. There is no normal for us parents until that happens.

by Brian Davis in his full page ad. I can’t imagine what motivated Mr. Davis to offer such a voluminous “Fox News” ad. However, I think it’s telling that his introductory statement basically warns of the destruction of our economy and recent policy progress and his summary encourages us to vote for equal opportunity for all Americans. I’ll leave it up to you to read between the lines and listen to the “dog whistles”in Mr. Davis’s ad. As for me, a privileged white senior, issues are important but my guidepost is the Golden Rule and I will vote accordingly.

Dead End Hayride: The boo must go on Life post-COVID may be full of uncertainty, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that 2020 canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be full of fall celebration and Halloween frolicking. The show must go on, albeit, with precautions.

Jeremy Hastings, creator and owner of The Dead End Hayride in Wyoming, is grateful his business of boo has been able to pivot and adopt to the ever-changing landscape. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When COVID started to pop up, we obviously didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what was going to happen. But we were kind of hanging on to the fact that the State Fair never cancels, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just look to see what sort of measures and due diligence they put in place for the State Fair, and we will emulate that,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then when the announcement came that the State Fair was canceled, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like OK, we need to watch what the Renaissance Festival is going to do. When they canceled, we were like OK. We kept saying OK. OK. OK,â&#x20AC;? he laughed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We (and) other pumpkin patches and corn mazes were going to have to write the playbook.â&#x20AC;?

As luck would have it, another outof-state haunted venue volunteered to help. Hastings said a Salt Lake City haunted house opened for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;halfway to Halloweenâ&#x20AC;? event, complete with a 30-page COVID preparedness plan.

They were able to open up and run their event successfully and safely for one weekend. Afterward, the venue offered their playbook plan up to others in the haunted house industry, complete with a list of what worked and what didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

Armed with that information, Jeremy and his dedicated year-round team at The Dead End Hayride also paid close attention to theme parks across the country that were opening up and what measures those businesses were taking. Hastings, an eternal optimist, said there were times that he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t 100% sure they were going to be able to have a Halloween season or not. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a struggle against the virus, and a struggle against the unknown,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A week in COVID is like a year during any other normal time.

In any business, we rely on consisten-

cy and being able to predict what the customer behavior is going to be. Just the uncertainty and not knowing what the future holds in the year 2020 is the hardest part.â&#x20AC;?

Some of the high-level changes that Hastings and his team started with was capacity. On average, they hosted several thousand people in a night, so they had to cut that by 50%. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We knew the biggest struggle was going to be social distancing people both on our hayride and in our queue lines, where people line up to go on the hayride,â&#x20AC;? he explained.

Hastings said it was time to get creative. They came up with a system of queue line pods: Members of a social group who came together stay in close proximity with one another but are distanced from other groups. The queue line holds 250 people, but all spaced apart. The Dead End Hayride opened Sept. 25, so they now have a couple of weekends under their belts; customers are responding very well with complying with masks and the queue pods, Hastings noted.

Another new detail in the season of COVID is there are no tickets available at the door. Tickets must be purchased online, and only a certain number of tickets will be sold per half-hour time slot. Hastings warned that time slots are fi lling out days in advance, so anyone waiting until last minute might not get the day of their choice. Hastings also dialed back his monster actors by 15%. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one lost their job, we just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hire as many seasonal staff as in the past,â&#x20AC;? he said.

All in all, Hastings is counting his haunted blessings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think people are really thankful to be out and about,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;And with our reduced capacity, I think the show is better. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always struggled with the really busy days in years past. The more people, the faster we have to send them through. Since weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re (at) 50% reduced capacity, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost the perfect number of people, where the show itself is fantastic.â&#x20AC;?

Nereson, Joyce Arlene (nĂŠe Ayshford) 1937-2020 "Nan" Joyce died peacefully on Oct. 7 in the presence of her children of end-stage Alzheimer's disease. Joyce was a mother, grandma, sister, aunt, wife, and loyal friend to many. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Sue Ann, her husband, William Eugene, and her six siblings.

Throughout her life she loved and cared for four children: Laurie (Jim Manteufel), Bill (Paula Haller-Croteau), Sue Ann, and Cathy (Bret Eyler); seven grandchildren: Ariel Nereson (Matt Durkin), Jenni Whitney, Gunnar Nereson (Megan Martin), Suzanne Nereson, Ethan Eyler, Annika Eyler, and Beau Eyler; and two great-granddaughters: Josie Ann Durkin and Kennedy Joyce Nereson.

Originally from Chatfield, MN, Joyce lived most of her adult life in White Bear Lake and was a long-time employee of the Holiday House Supper Club. Upon the death of her daughter Sue Ann in 1977 Joyce established the Sue Nereson Memorial Award for girls gymnastics at White Bear Lake Senior High School. The award has been given out on a continual basis for over 40 years.

A prolific letter-writer and greatest champion of her children and grandchildren, Joyce leaves behind a treasure trove of messages of support, love, and oneliners for her family. We will joyfully remember her faith in us, her unwavering love, and her legendary sense of humor. Family came first for Joyce, and she included many dear friends, feline as well as human, in her family. Her legacy includes her fierce loyalty, her endless appetite for books and movies of all kinds, the sound of her laugh, her wonderfully expressive face, and her love of family lore. Her family gives special thanks to Jen Stack, Heather Lessard and Kelly Jane, Nan's caregivers, whose love and care enabled her to stay in her home surrounded by her books, her pictures, her cat, and her family: the things she knew and loved.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Minnesota Humane Society, mnhumane.org.

Mary Ellen Rockwell Lorette Johnson passed peacefully on Oct. 13th, 2020, with her husband, Steve Johnson, by her side. She graduated from White Bear High School and Gustavas College. She loved books and writing; she was a poet; enjoyed traveling; had a rich spiritual life; was loving, kind, and a wonderful listener; and accepted everyone without judgment.

She loved and was loved by an extended family including daughters Sue Lorette and Chris Lorette David, her sister Louann Rockwell Lindbeck, their spouses, 8 grandchildren and their partners, 2 great granddaughters, and all of Steveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family. She is reunited with her beloved son Billy, who passed in 2015. She will be greatly missed but we hold her in our hearts. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;She whom we love is no longer where she was before. Following the chicks during the last two weeks, certainly, had its challenges. We managed to work our way around the freezing temps, icy rain, and heavy winds to take in a few glorious days of fall colors and spend time with the chicks. We did not spot as many migratory waterfowl this year. The Coots, however, have never been more plentiful and provided great entertainment with their skittish and apoplectic behaviors. They certainly kept the Eagles busy during the last month. Manitou Island gets the blue ribbon for best in show for fall colors. We cannot recall a more vibrant production. With the season of white and ice just around the corner, we have decided to tuck away our fishing boat for the season. And, oh, what a season it has been! With the dreadful pandemic always looming, following the successful hatch and upbringing of the chicks has been the highlight of 2020. The chicks will most likely continue to fish and stick together on White Bear Lake as they prepare for the 1,170-1,570 mile journey that lies ahead. We have a very good feeling about the chicks’ imminent departure and migration south. Their parents did an amazing job keeping them safe and imparting all the necessary Loon life skills. The chicks have been refining their wing flaps from day one and all that practice will soon be put to use because, during migration, the average wing flap count is 255 per minute. Thank you everyone on and around WBL for keeping an eye on the chicks and sharing the lake. We will close out Loon Chronicles V in early November with a retrospective montage and things to think about while we await the return of the Loons in April 2021.

Steve Donatelle opened the iconic neighborhood restaurant in 1976. Due to the pandemic, the ownership and crew have been forced to reinvent many of the restaurant’s processes. Pornouma Marid, or “Oh”, as her regulars call her, grew up in Thailand learning and developing her culinary skills from her mother while working in the family’s restaurant. She moved to White Bear Lake from Thailand in 1997 when she married Bob Kiewel. Oh was confident that her repertoire of authentic Thai dishes, crafted from old family recipes, would appeal to locals looking for authentic Thai food; so she and Bob opened Ban Thai in 2005 and they have been serving up award winning Thai food ever since. Today their teenage daughter is a part of the team as well, making it truly a family affair, just like it was back in Thailand.

Bears start fast, earn rare grid win over Cretin-DH

The White Bear Lake football team would have been elated to beat anybody on Friday, on the heels of an embarrassing opening loss the week before.

Beating Cretin-Derham Hall, though, was extra sweet. The Bears scored on their first five possessions and held off the Raiders 35-21.

Cretin-Derham Hall, (CDH) had beaten the Bears six straight years, and 12 times in the last 13 meetings.

“It’s fun to beat any 6A team but it’s really a big deal to beat one of the elite programs like Cretin,” Coach Ryan Bartlett said. “You can say they are down a little this year, but they always have really good players.

That Holloman is a really good receiver and they have a D-1 lineman.”

About the losing streak against the Raiders, he said, “We’ve had some really good games with them, some close games. It’s always a fun game to play them.”

The Bears had been shackled by Stillwater 52-24 the week before, trailing 24-3 at halftime. Against CDH, the Bears led 28-0 and 35-7.

“We really turned up the heat in practice this week,” said Bartlett, who had called the opening loss an “unacceptable” performance for both players and coaches.

“We moved a couple players around. They responded well, Players who needed to step up did step up.”

The Bears defense had two “three-and-outs” against CDH to open the game and scored both times, helped by a shanked punt after the first one, with Jeff Odamtten bolting 19 yards to score, then kicking the first or his five extra points. Next came a one-yard touchdown from quarterback Branden Berwald.

Berwald hit Odamtten for a 42-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Odamtten dropped a likely touchdown pass the play before but Berwald went right back to him. The senior back was caught from behind at the ten but dragged the tackler into the end zone.

Spencer Oxton dashed 19 yards for another touchdown, opening a 28-0 lead. The Raiders got on the board with Cage Linton breaking away for a 43-yard touchdown. The Bears answered with Berwald keeping the ball for a 23-yard touchdown that made it 35-7.

“Branden did as much with his feet as with his arm in this game,” said Bartlett about his second-year quarterback.

A defensive highlight for the Bears was defensive end Will Neuendorf forcing two fumbles. “We have been working on what we call ‘ball disruption drills’ in practice and it was nice to see them work in the game,” the coach said. Matt Sloan made two tackles-for-loss (21 yards), Tolu Oyekunie one TFL for 15 yards and Oxton one for five yards.The defensive kickoff coverage was also vastly improved, he added.

CDH (0-2) gave up no more points, and closed the cap with Luke Floyslund passing to Tre Holloman for a 16-yard score just before halftime, and to Marsello Mendez for a 32-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

The Bears rushed for 265 yards and passed for 112.

The Raiders gained 135 rushing and 174 passing. Berwald ran 15 times for 78 yards and completed seven of 12 passes for 112 yards. Anthony Lewis-Royal gained 81 yards on 19 runs, Odamtten 44 on seven runs, and Oxton 41 on five runs. Odamtten had two catches for 62 yards and Alex Lockwood four for 41 yards.

The Bears will play at East Ridge (2-0) on Friday night.

Mahtomedi tallies five TDs via air, beats Pioneers 41-14

Johnny DeVore passed for 348 yards and five touchdowns as the Mahtomedi Zephyrs shredded Hill-Murray 41-14 at home Friday evening.

DeVore, a senior in his second year as the Zephyrs quarterback, completed 16 of 21 passes, to seven different receivers, with none intercepted.

The Zephyrs (2-0) led 34-0 before Hill-Murray (1-1) got on the board.

Dominick Livingston caught five passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, covering 60 yards to open the scoring in the first quarter and 10 yards in the fourth quarter.

Ethan Loss caught three for passes for 111 yards including touchdowns of 25 and 41 yards, both in the first quarter.

The other scoring pass went to Jacob Wynia from three yards out with 2:32 left in the second quarter for a 27-0 halftime lead. Javan Harvey caught three for 66 yards.

Tony Neubeck had the lone rushing touchdown, from 22 yards in the third quarter. He totaled 69 yards in seven carries, and caught two passes for 33 yards. Jordan Hull netted 37 yards in 11 carries. Kyle Oswald was 5-for-6 on extra points.

Hill-Murray’s touchdowns came on passes from Simon Seidl to Joseph Koch from 25 yards and from Max Yanz to Max Nicholson from 22 yards.

Defensively, Ty Decker intercepted two passes and Loss also had a pickoff. Leading tacklers were Ian Wilsey with 11 (four solo) and Collin Beiersdorf with seven (two solo).

The Bears (3-7-2) hosted Park of Cottage Grove (3-9) after the Wolfpack upset East Ridge 2-1 in the first round. Scoring for the Bears were Gavin Rogers, JB Morris, Dan Vargas, Connor Moser and Garrett Thom. If the Bears beat Park, they will play in the finals Thursday evening.

White Bear Lake cruised past Tartan 7-0 in the first round of Section 4AA girls soccer on Tuesday, Oct. 13, earning another shot at old nemesis East Ridge in the semifinals. Nicole Moore and Olivia Haas notched two goals each, and Sydney Johnson, Emma Merriman, Lauren Eckerle, Charlie Adam had one each, for the Bears (9-3). The Bears lost to East Ridge

(7-3-2) in conference 1-0. More significant, the Bears have lost in the section semifinals five straight seasons, the last two of those against East Ridge. The semifinal was held Tuesday evening. See presspubs.com for a report. If the Bears won, they would play in the finals Thursday evening against Woodbury or No. 1 seed Stillwater.

The White Bear Lake girls were runners-up in the Section 4AA cross country meet to close the season last Wednesday.

Led by Melanie Pankow in sixth place and Claire Schneider in ninth, the Bears had 58 points for second place behind Highland Park, which had 29. Stillwater was third with 69 among 10 teams.

The Bears had placed third in their conference meet, one point behind Stillwater.

Thus ended a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic with rules altered to permit no more than three teams per race.

“This will be a season that I will long remember,” said longtime coach Patricia Percival. “I am so proud of how the team handled this adversity and made a positive out of a negative situation.”

Pankow hit the chute in 19:16 and

Schneider in 19:44 at Highland Park Golf Course. Lily Schneider placed 12th in 20:02, Natalie Andres 13th in 20:04, and Anna Ryan 18th in 20:20. All are seniors in their final high school race except Lily Schneider, a sophomore.

Those were the five counting scores and the other two runners also had good runs with Maggie Blanding in 20th place and Madelyne Bystrom in 25th.

Stillwater senior Analee Weaver, who would have been a leading contender for the state title, was individual section champion in 17:38, a full minute and four seconds ahead of second-place Molly Moening of Highland Park.th With the state meet canceled, the section meet was the season finale. The Bears, with their second-place finish, would have qualified for state as a team.

Bear swimmers lose to Cretin-DH; sections next The White Bear Lake swimmers lost to Cretin-Derham Hall 101-77 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and finished dual meets with an 0-8 record. Bear clinic provides accessible care to uninsured, underinsured

Opening a free health clinic during a pandemic would seem daunting to most, but the creators of The Bear Care Health and Wellness Clinic weren’t worried at all.

The Bear Care Health and Wellness Center, also known as the Bear Care Clinic, is a free school-based clinic that offers a wide variety of services to all students in the White Bear Lake Area School District. It is a supplement care clinic that works as a nonprofit entity and is located on the White Bear Lake High School – North Campus.

“Our mission is to provide accessible care to uninsured and underinsured children to improve health equity and health outcomes for our community,” said Jessica Miehe, clinic creator. Miehe is an assistant professor of nursing at St. Catherine University.

All the services at the Bear Care Clinic are free for students from birth to age 21 to better support the community and its families.

The clinic was scheduled to open in September but in response to COVID-19, staff decided to open early six months early. Since opening in March, the clinic has served more than 50 students and continues to take on new patients.

“Right now, so many families are dealing with high insurance costs and loss of income due to the pandemic. We want to help keep kids in school and keep families at work,” Miehe said.

create a mural for it.

“I asked them to think about the current climate of our culture right now and then come up with something that fit our mission,” Miehe said.

DelCastillo said, “I took this opportunity to paint the mural because White Bear Lake has taught me how to paint, so it would be a shame not to use my knowledge and skills

to give back to the district. Also, I think that it’s important to create positive environments in our schools that make students feel comfortable. Hopefully, the mural will help achieve that even in a health office during a global pandemic.”

Fastner added, “We are trying to promote good health, social justice and equality. We want to showcase examples of good ways to stay

healthy and promote diversity, in a ‘love your neighbor’ type of way throughout the mural.”

The mural, which should be finished around December, will be located in the main area of the clinic.

The Bear Care Clinic is a partnership between St. Catherine University and the school district. Both partners are committed to achieving inclusive excellence by engaging, including and valuing the diversity within their communities.

Judy Rognli, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner, is the main provider at the clinic. Working alongside Rognli are nursing and social work students who come to learn while caring for the patients.

Some of the services the clinic provides include health assessments, sports physical exams, rapid strep throat testing, ear infections, pink eye, rapid mono testing, influenza testing, mental health support, urinary tract infection testing and flu shots.

Bear Care Clinic staff are looking forward to their new office after the reconstruction of North Campus is complete. The new office is included in last year’s $326 million building bond referendum. The measure passed; 57.4% voters supported the district’s Comprehensive Facilities Plan.

The clinic is currently open from 12-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The clinic is not able to test for the coronavirus at this time. If your child displays symptoms of COVID-19, you can call the clinic for assistance.
