Regional trail route upsetting to Bald Eagle homeowners

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Privacy is something Doug and Dianne Dorschner will lose if the county sticks to its latest layout for the Bruce Vento Regional Trail extension.

The Bald Eagle Boulevard residents say the planned trail will be 10 feet from their bedroom window, the logic of which eludes Doug.

"They are encroaching on people's property along Bald Eagle Boulevard," he said. "There are better routes."

The Dorschners voiced their concerns at a well-attended open house recently hosted by county parks and recreation staff at Boatworks Commons. The couple, and many of their

neighbors, wondered how and when the route changed.

According to the county website, the preferred alignment corridor for the final phase of the trail project was selected in early 2020 as a result of public engagement starting September 2018 to 2020 with predesign starting January 2021. A draft amendment was approved by the Board of Commissioners in May and submitted to the Metropolitan Council.

That's news to Tim David, a Bald Eagle resident who doesn't recall any county meeting after 2019 regarding the new route.

Receiving an “F” on a test is one of the most high-pressure things a middle schooler can experience, especially when it drastically sinks their overall grade. Under the newly implemented grading system at Sunrise Park Middle School, students will no longer receive an F letter grade for poor or unfinished work.

Instead, the school will use an “incomplete,” or “I” letter grade, for any schoolwork that scores in the 50-59.45 percentile. An incomplete is not a passing grade, but its value is now the same as that of every other letter grade bracket. Any scores below the 49.45 percentile will not be

Metro deer management is anything but simple

As deer hunting season gears up, be on the lookout. Archery season is underway, and firearm season will begin Nov. 6. Deer-vehicle crashes peak in the autumn months, but Minnesota’s large deer population makes them a safety hazard on the road all year long. In the last five years (2015–2019) in Minnesota, there were 7,247 deer crashes reported to the Department of Public Safety, resulting in 20 deaths. These crashes also resulted in 121 serious injuries, of which 105 were motorcyclists.

The city of Vadnais Heights does allow deer hunting with a permit issued through an application process, which comes with several stipulations.

City Administrator Kevin Watson reports there are usually 15-25 permits issued each year. There have been 21 issued so far in 2021.

Watson explains that issuing such permits is part of the city’s overall

deer management strategy and is accepted by the community. And while he says, “a little bit of it is tradition,” the city genuinely wants participants to help control the population: “We do ask people to harvest (deer) if they’re able.” The total number of deer taken in 2020 was 21; in the last eight years that number has ranged from 15 to 36.

Another part of Vadnais Heights’ deer management includes Ramsey County’s use of controlled hunts.

Those hunts take place annually across the county, typically in parks and open spaces.

The Metro Bowhunters Resource Base provides the hunters and administers the hunts during regular deer season in cooperation with Ramsey County (and other counties and cities all over the area).

According to Michael

Goodnature, natural resource manager for the Ramsey County Parks & Recreation Department, those hunts are focused on the higher concentrations of deer.

Each year, Goodnature conducts an aerial population survey to determine the numbers and locations of deer in Ramsey County.

The results of those surveys help inform the county’s approach to deer management, as well as the approaches of individual cities.

While the stated population goal is 20 deer per square mile of suitable deer habitat, deer density has been at least twice that for over two decades (topping out at 95 deer per square mile in 2004). Certain places, like Turtle Creek in Shoreview and the Vadnais Lake area, are perennial hotspots.

According to Minnesota law, deer are owned by the state and managed on behalf of the people of Minnesota by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Across most of the state, that occurs in dozens of management units to achieve more localized goals. However, in some places — namely, the Twin Cities metro area — things get complicated.

Most of the metro area is included in deer permit area 701, where hunting often does not occur due to firearms discharge restrictions imposed by municipalities. Scott Noland, DNR wildlife manager in Forest Lake, says there isn’t much he can do to influence management in those places. According to the DNR’s urban deer population control policy, where local ordinances preclude firearm use “responsibility for deer population management reverts substantially to the LGU (local governmental unit).”

Where that is the case, several things are required of LGUs that undertake deer population control.

Those include making a deer population estimate, stating a population goal and developing a public input process and a written plan to achieve population goals. Also, accurate records of deer-car collisions and citizen complaints must be kept.

Noland explains that where the onus is on LGUs to keep deer numbers reasonable, his role is to help facilitate management.

He does that through setting liberal harvest limits (currently five deer per hunter in area 701) and making himself available for technical guidance.

“We’re trying to drive the population toward goals, while providing municipalities flexibility to achieve their goals.”

For hopeful hunters and other residents who wish to understand where hunting is allowed or how deer control is conducted, local ordinances and policies vary widely. Some cities, like Blaine, Hugo and Lino Lakes, allow hunting in some areas, albeit with restrictions.

Most others, like Shoreview, White Bear Township and Stillwater, authorize little to no hunting whatsoever.

Goodnature acknowledges that chronically high deer density may cause detriment to the overall health of the environment, not to mention the deer themselves. But, like Noland, his ability to get deer numbers low is somewhat limited by population goals set by the municipalities within Ramsey County.

“Basically, I only have jurisdiction over Ramsey County Parks.”

Following the controlled hunts, if deer numbers still remain high, Goodnature has the option to hire sharpshooters to further reduce the population.

This technique was applied as recently as last year; however, it is cost-prohibitive and not feasible for achieving landscapewide population control.

Both Noland and Goodnature cite citizen complaints as one of the main drivers of deer management policy. Combined with population surveys, complaints help determine where deer control needs to happen, and to what extent.

Residents living where firearm discharge restrictions are in place are encouraged to contact the city first, as they are likely required to keep records of such complaints.

For those interested in learning more about controlled bowhunts being conducted in the area, Ramsey County and Washington County websites list the current year’s hunts, as does the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base website: mbrb.org.

An act of kindness

S

EVERAL WEEKS AGO I visited the Allina Clinic in Shoreview for a pre-op Covid test. A pleasant experience occurred as I was leaving the clinic.

I was taking off my mask and it got caught in a hearing aid. It pulled out and went flying. I was looking all over the sidewalk for it. A car was pulling out from the parking lot and the female motorist stopped, got out of her car and told me that it landed in the garden mulch. I found it right away. What a wonderful act of kindness.

This test was in preparation for another visit to the United Heart & Vascular Clinic in St. Paul where I had a left atrial appendage closure with a Watchman device. This is a procedure for patients with atrial fibrillation who do not wish to be using blood thinning medications on a long-term basis.

The procedure was performed by Dent Underwood, MD, an electrophysiologist.

I heard about the procedure and device which was developed twelve years ago in Minnesota. More than 150,000 people have used it over the last six years.

CANDIDATES OFTEN PROMISE things they know they can’t deliver on. This is perhaps more true in presidential and congressional elections, but nevertheless it goes on.

Over the years you probably remember those ploys, “A Dodge in every garage” and “A chicken for every pot.”

There have been promises to forgive all current existing student debt. That sends signals of lacking financial discipline.

I often wonder why students have no concern about racking up student debt? The government can’t keep bailing people out.

Counselors need to guide students and to recognize where they will find successful career paths, given the individual abilities and interest.

We worked hard to save and scrimp so we could help our children pay for their college. At an early age we told them, “You need to start saving for college and we will match whatever you save. Then when it comes time for college, we want you to be able to support half the state rate for tuition, room and board and we will cover the expenses beyond that for the college or university of your choice.”

There was also a monthly payment plan without interest that was available so our college grads came out debt free.

Julie, our oldest, had a little extra help from Social Security because her mom had died.

If you have children in school now-whatever grade-it’s a good time to start preparing and look into all possibilities and scholarships that are available. When our kids were going to college, it was hard to find scholarships that might be available to them. Again, we need good guidance counselors to help families through this expensive bump in the road of child raising.

Give and Take of the Hunt

very hunter knows the feeling of tunnel vision when the perfect deer steps into view.

All focus is lasered in on a single point, watching how the animal steps, evaluating the angle of the shot, getting the trigger hand in place with just the right timing.

This moment is a highlight of the hunt, but it is so fleeting in the grand scale of the season.

Most of the hours spent in the tree stand or blind, we’re looking at things Movers & that aren’t deer. Birds, Shakers squirrels, maybe the Jackie occasional fox Bussjaeger or coyote, and of course— the fields and trees.

In the last few years I’ve been hunting, I’ve made an effort to really get to know my patch of the forest. After all, the health of the forest affects the health of all the creatures within it. All it took was some photos and a nature ID app to learn that my hunting stand is surrounded by distinctive woodland flora such as gray

dogwood, yellow birch, and witch hazel.

And then there’s the buckthorn.

An invasive species from Eurasia, this shrub has taken root in regions across the state. It chokes out native species and creates dense, thorny thickets. The roots of buckthorn emit a chemical substance that kills off competing plants, leading to poor soil quality and erosion.

Deer don’t eat it. Instead, deer browse on more favorable native species, leaving the buckthorn unharmed to spread like wildfire.

In the book “Braiding Sweetgrass,” botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer examines the relationship between the world of Western science and her perspective as a member of the Potawatomi Nation. One of the concepts she stresses the most is that of reciprocity—giving back in thanks for what was received, in an endless cycle. This applies to gift giving between humans, but also between humans and the elements of the natural world.

When I take a deer from our forest, I feel it is my responsibility to do what I can to care for that forest in return. On the land where I

hunt, removing buckthorn is one of the ways I have chosen to improve the overall health of the forest.

Buckthorn is not easy to kill. It usually doesn’t grow very large, and can be removed with a variety of tools, but it can be a painstaking process that takes years. Cut stumps must be treated with herbicide, or prevented from growing back with coverings such as tin cans or buckthorn bags.

It can be unsightly, and it is definitely a slog. But to me, the work is worth the price of keeping the woodland healthy, making room for groves of hazelnuts and gooseberries to thrive and create a healthier ecosystem.

I love the rush of that moment when the deer steps into the scope, but once the excitement is over, it is just as important to take a step back and look at the wider landscape. If you’re headed onto hunting grounds this season, I encourage you to take a close look at the land that supports you, and do what you can to support it back.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Elected officials not interested There was a hugely attended Town Hall Forum meeting on Tuesday evening, Oct. 19, at Kellerman’s Event Center. The topic of discussion was the Rush Line BRT project. Two hundred chairs were set up, and yet there was a "standing room only" attendance. There was a row near the front reserved for elected officials. It was empty.

Mayor Jo Emerson did not attend.

Council Member Doug Biehn did not attend.

Council Member Kevin Edberg did not attend.

Council Member Steve Engstrand did not attend.

Council Member Dan Jones did not attend.

They were all invited to attend.

It seems that these elected officials don’t much care how the concerned residents of White Bear Lake feel about this boondoggle.

Where was Don Mullin — candidate for mayor?

The people who did care enough to attend were: Bill Walsh, Council Member from Ward 1. Bill hosted the meeting and spent most of his time taking notes as residents spoke about their concerns.

Dan Louismet, candidate for mayor of White Bear Lake. Dan spoke and talked about how things would be different if he were elected. He seems to value White Bear Lake residents’ opinions and wants to continue to promote White Bear Lake’s “hometown appeal.”

Heidi Hughes, candidate for Ward 2 Council Member. Heidi stood in front of the gathered group and spoke passionately about how much she loves her hometown and how excited she is to raise her children in White Bear Lake.

Unlike the absent elected officials, these people were applauded for taking the time to show up and let us know they were interested in listening.

Protect hunting and fishing Calling all sportspeople! The fall hunting openers are here, and we could see deer with smaller antlers, changing migratory pattern for waterfowl and a declining walleye population.

Why? The record drought in Minnesota has dried up our waterfowl potholes, dried up vegetation

that the deer population depend on and higher temperatures in our lakes have changed the fish population.

The climate is changing. Our planet is warming and is mostly caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in the United States is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. We as consumers are starting to demand change such as electric vehicles, and we have big oil companies concerned there will be a reduction in demand for their product-fossil fuels. So, are they trying to be part of the solution to reduce fossil fuels? No, they are ramping up output of plastic-which is made from oil and gas. It’s like whack-a-mole.

Don’t be discouraged, let’s set our sights on the next place we can make a difference-single source plastics.

Start asking questions of the stores you frequent & restaurants where you get your take out. “Why the plastic bags, why the single source plastic take-out containers, why the excessive packaging? As an individual, you have more power than you know with your wallet. Be a responsible consumer and we may be able to help preserve our Minnesota hunting and fishing traditions.

from the group planning the project to allow them to accurately represent its design. For example, it is a misrepresentation to say that the buses will be diesel and will pollute the Bruce Vento bike trail. In fact, buses metro-wide are being converted to electric and the Twin Cities recently received a grant from the Biden administration to purchase many electric buses, some of which are intended for the Rush Line.

At the time the line will be completed, most of the buses will be electric. If people are serious about slowing global warming, we need to act locally.

Reducing road congestion on Highway 61 which will increasingly happen due to urban sprawl, demands a move away from exclusive reliance on cars. If citizens are involved in the design of the station, which they have had the opportunity to do, this line can help preserve and even enhance the vibrancy of White Bear Lake by increasing the customer base to downtown businesses and making our city more attractive to young families who are looking for places to live that are not car-dependent. This will eventually raise, not decrease our property values. Most of all, it is important to stay civil and not assume that the loudest voices represent the majority. Accusing our representatives who support the plan as “traitors” is not conducive to a neighborly climate.

This letter is in response to what was said in the meeting of the opponents to the Rush Line organized

by Councilman Walsh. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, with the understanding that public input is only one of the considerations to decide the fate of a public works project. Those who want to preserve the historic nature of downtown White Bear Lake, which I support too, should realize that past residents must have argued the same when the streetcar linking White Bear Lake to St. Paul got discontinued to favor highways. This meeting organized by Walsh did not reflect the cross section of the population as it was advertised as an anti-Rush Line meeting. Had it been an unbiased meeting, he would have invited representatives

I want to say that I believe we are blessed to have a locally-owned hometown newspaper to keep us informed about our community news and opinions.

The talents and abilities of the publisher, reporters and photographer combine to produce a weekly source of current news for us. Not all towns have this - heck, not all communities have vibrant downtowns like we do! The towns surrounding our lake are precious to so many of us.

The market started with a small local grant offered by Power Up, a local healthyliving nonprofit. Michelle Bruhn of Forks in the Dirt was awarded the grant to support ways to encourage people to eat healthier, less-processed foods a little longer into the off-season while inspiring more home-cooked meals. Since the first market in December 2017, the markets average 500 shoppers per event, whether held inside or out.

This season’s events will be outside in front of the Tamarack Nature Center building, located at 5287 Otter Lake Road, White Bear Township. Free hot apple cider and fires will keep shoppers warm, and a food truck is scheduled for each market

date. The trails and outdoor play areas will also be open.

Affordable groceries available for holidays Fare For All is hosting a sale of low-cost holiday food packs from 1 to 3 p.m. on two Fridays, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. The sale will be held at Community of Grace Church, located at 4000 Linden St., White Bear Lake.

Both holiday packs are $30 and include frozen meat items, produce and dessert.

Make blankets for shelters First Presbyterian Church of White Bear Lake will host a morning of blanket making and quilt tying from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20. The polar fleece blankets and quilts will be donated to Solid Ground and Marie Sandvik Center in Minneapolis.

All are welcome to participate. Materials are provided, but fabric is appreciated.

Each blanket requires two 6-foot lengths of polar fleece. Fabrics for quilts, waterproof fabric, old blankets and scissors are also needed. Donated items can be brought to the event or dropped off in advance at the church. Participants are also welcome to make blankets, quilts and afghans at home and drop them off the day of the event.

Vadnais Heights Lions prepare for Toy Drive The city of Vadnais Heights and the Vadnais Heights Lions Club Foundation sponsor the annual Vadnais Heights Lions Toy/Food Drive, as well as community needs programs, which benefit lowerincome residents.

The distribution of food and toys is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Vadnais Heights Commons, 655 East County Road F. Proof of residency (driver’s license/photo ID, copy of utility bill) is required to pick up items.

Those who would like to select toys for children are encouraged to register in advance. Registration can be completed at the Nov. 20 food distribution at the Commons. Those who preregister will be given priority access from 9 to 10 a.m.

Unregistered participants will be able to access the distribution site from 10 to 11 a.m. Those who cannot preregister may contact Sue Woehrle at smwoehrle44@ gmail.com. Registration is preferred before Dec. 18, but is available the day of distribution.

Community members are invited to drop off donations of nonperishable food, toys and other age-appropriate items for children up to age 13 at Vadnais Heights City Hall. WHITE BEAR LAKE CITY COUNCIL NOTES WHITE BEAR LAKE — Members of the police department honor guard presented colors at the City Council meeting, something new to those in attendance, before recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

"Other communities have one, and we wanted to make this a new tradition," said Chief Julie Swanson, about the four-member guard. The honor guard preceded the swearing-in of three new officers at the Oct. 26 meeting (see separate story).

During new business and old, council did the following:

• Approved certification of delinquent utility accounts.

The finance director said it was the lowest number in five or six years. There are 434 delinquent accounts totaling $273,135. Amounts are assessed to 2022 property taxes at 7.5% interest. Council Member Kevin Edberg remarked that the interest rate "seems high." The rate will be reviewed.

• Authorized the mayor to execute an employment agreement with Lindy Crawford for the position of city manager.

At a special meeting Oct. 20,

council offered unanimous support for the mayor’s nomination. Crawford accepted the offer that evening and starts Dec. 20 at a salary of $145,000 per year. Her salary will increase to $150,000 in six months following a satisfactory performance review.

• Accepted a $20,000 donation from the Lions Club to help restore the caboose on display along Hwy. 61. A caboose renovation committee created a scope of work in 2021 and drafted a budget with hopes of reroofing the historic train car prior to winter. A shelter

above the caboose is also being considered.

• Set Nov. 23 for a public hearing on issuance of bonds to finance renovation of the public safety building and related capital improvement plan.

Wold Architects estimates the renovation to cost $12.5 million. Finance Director Kerri Kindsvater recommended adding 7% for "unforeseen market conditions," and another $500,000 for energy performance add-ons. Cost of issuance, interest and other fees bring the total issuance to $14.3 million.

• Approved a compensation study by McGrath Human Resources Group. The city’s current classification and compensation plan was originally implemented in 1988.

While the city has remained in compliance with the Pay Equity Act, staff noted that much has changed over the last 30 years and a new plan is warranted to ensure the city remains competitive. The study will cost $31,700.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Grant • Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted three traffic stops in the middle of the day Oct. 3 in the 9000 block of Manning Avenue N. One motorist was stopped for speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, another for speeding 77 mph in a 55 mph zone, and a third for violating the hands-free cell phone law.

• A chain link fence in the 11000 block of 60th Street N. was reported cut in two places Oct. 3, apparently to gain access to two RV’s stored on the lot. The catalytic converters of both vehicles were then cut off. There is no suspect information available at this time.

• An unidentified motorist was cited

Oct. 3 in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. for speeding 75 mph in a 55 mph zone.

• A leaf blower and drill were reported stolen Oct. 6 from a presumably detached garage in the 8000 block of Jewel Avenue.

• Deputies conducted two traffic stops Oct. 6 in the 8000 block of Manning Avenue N. The infractions included crossing over the centerline, violating the hands-free cell phone law, speeding 77 mph in a 55 mph zone, expired registration and inattentive driving.

Mahtomedi • A Florida motorist was arrested and cited for DWI at 8:01 p.m. Oct. 2 in the 900 block of westbound Stillwater Road, after deputies pulled him over for having no headlights on

in the darkness and light drizzle.

The driver explained the lack of headlight illumination as the fault of the rental car. However, the driver’s glazed eyes and heavy odor of alcohol indicated that the lack of lights was caused by his intoxication. Deputies administrated SFST’s at the scene, on which the driver registered a 0.08 blood alcohol content.

• Deputies flushed a person on a bicycle out of Katherine Abbott Park after hours at 2:15 a.m. Oct. 5 and into the area of Long Lake Road and Berwich Lane before losing sight of the fleeing bicycle.

• Two gas drive-offs were reported Oct. 4 at the Holiday station on Stillwater Road. A third gas drive-off from the station was reported Oct. 5.

• Deputies pulled a vehicle over on Mahtomedi Avenue at 8:47 p.m. Oct. 5 for lack of headlights after dark. This

traffic stop did not turn into a DWI arrest as often happens with no lights; deputies simply reminded the driver to switch on the headlights.

• A Stillwater Road business reported a counterfeit $50 bill passed to a clerk Oct. 8.

• A dog bite report was taken Oct. 8 in the 1000 block of Love Avenue.

Pine Springs • A motorist was cited at 2:42 a.m. Oct. 8 on southbound I-694 over Highway 36 for speeding 85 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Deputies described the driver as “slow to stop.”

Willernie • A catalytic converter was reported stolen Oct. 7 from a Chatham Road address.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • A Vadnais Heights man, 42, was arrested for assault Oct. 12 after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of a domestic incident in the 3500 block of Montmorency Street.

• A resident in the 3800 block of Tessier Trail on Oct. 12 reported his driver’s license used fraudulently at a Minneapolis park after an unknown person presented it as identification while receiving a citation for being in the park after hours. The victim said he lost his wallet while kayaking at Bald Eagle Lake and canceled his credit cards.

• A resident in the 1100 block of County Road D reported a garage burglary overnight Oct. 13-14 during which two tool sets were stolen, items strewn about and a motorcycle ignition damaged.

• A St. Paul man, 41, was arrested Oct. 14 in the 300 block of Koehler Road for leaving the scene of an accident after he crashed through a power pole and into two cars parked in a driveway before leaving the scene with his dog. The dog was transferred to Animal Control.

• A St. Paul man, 33, was arrested Oct. 14 in the 1200 block of County Road D Circle East for violating an order for protection (OFP) after he was witnessed on the property. He was taken into custody at Regions Hospital after claiming to ingest narcotics.

• An unidentified woman was arrested Oct. 15 at the Vadnais Heights Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E for shoplifting. After witnesses obtained her license plate information, a Keep Our Kops Safe (KOPS) alert was issued.

When Chisago County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled her over, they discovered she had an active misdemeanor warrant and booked her at their jail. On Oct. 22, store

employees recovered some of the merchandise taken from the store by two females who didn’t pay for them. A St. Paul woman, 37, was cited Oct. 22 for misdemeanor theft, trespassed and released, after she was caught shoplifting. A Mahnomen woman, 38, was arrested on an outstanding warrant at 11:22 p.m. Oct. 22 after she fled the Walmart parking lot in a vehicle and left all but one shoplifted item behind. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on her vehicle, recovered the stolen item, trespassed her and arrested her.

• A Coon Rapids man, 31, was arrested on a warrant Oct. 15 on I-694 and I-35E. • A Little Canada man, 46, was arrested Oct. 18 in the 1000 block of Berwood Avenue on an active Washington County warrant, following a disorderly conduct call of a male who refused to leave the premises.

• A Columbia Heights man reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Hyundai Elantra Oct. 18 while it was

parked at Sucker Lake Park south lot in the 25 block of County Road F. A St. Paul man, 37, was arrested Oct. 22 at that location for possessing burglary tools by water patrol deputies on routine surveillance who interrupted a catalytic converter theft in progress that involved a New Brighton woman’s vehicle.

The subject has been charged.

• A Minneapolis woman, 37, was arrested for assault Oct. 18 following a domestic incident in the 800 block of County Road D. The case has been referred to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

White Bear Township • A resident in the 5900 block of Pintail Lane reported their open garage burglarized overnight Oct. 18-19.

• After residents heard their dog barking ferociously at 1:00 a.m., they closed the garage door, but later discovered someone had rummaged through their car.

• Two businessess in the 5900 block of Highway 61 reported

thefts from autos parked at their locations overnight Oct. 19-20. One of the vehicles was damaged during the thefts, and a suspect was interrupted as he was breaking the rear passenger window of another vehicle in the lot. Information on the suspect vehicle is available. Ground FX Lawn & Landscape in the 2300 block of Leibel Street reported being in possession of a video showing gas being stolen at approximately the same time of night as the thefts from auto by a person in a vehicle similar to the suspect vehicle involved in those other nearby crimes.

• A Coon Rapids man reported a wallet and handgun stolen from a vehicle parked in the 5400 block of Bald Eagle Blvd. overnight Oct. 19-20. The subsequent attempted credit card use alerted the victim to the crime.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen at 3:00 a.m.

New police officers welcomed back to White Bear The newest members of White Bear Lake’s police force all had previous ties to the city and looked forward to returning to the community.

The three officers, Eddie Yobbie, Luke Dohman and Jerome Carey, fulfilled career goals after a department member retired and two others relocated to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office.

Chief Julie Swanson introduced the new cops at their official swearing-in Oct. 26 before City Council.

Officer Yobbie is familiar with City Hall, as his mother worked for the city for years. He attended Mankato State until he decided to enlist, serving four years in the U.S. Army. One of his most proud moments in the military was earning the coveted Expert Infantryman Badge in 2016. The chief met Yobbie at Century College.

"He stood out as an exceptional student, which is why I noticed him," Swanson said. While in college, Yobbie worked as a security guard for Minnesota Health Fairview and in 2020, started as a community service officer (CSO) and police reservist in White Bear. He continued in that role until graduating and becoming a police officer.

"Three things stand out about Eddie," added the chief. "His willingness to help, his honesty and the importance of being a role model for his younger siblings."

Officer Dohman met the chief when he walked into the police department lobby to drop off

his reserve application. "He was young, but he made an impression because rather than just drop off the application and run, he waited and introduced himself," Swanson said. "It was obvious how badly he wanted to become a police reserve officer at that time."

For the next three years, Dohman volunteered with the police reserve, putting in more than 1,880 hours. He was also hired as a part-time CSO with White Bear. He juggled school at Century, later Metropolitan State, work and volunteering at White Bear, plus he was active with the county sheriff’s Explorers unit.

"As you can tell, law enforcement and serving the communi-

ty has been front and center for Luke most of his teen and adult life," the chief continued. "Luke attributes this drive to the many mentors he has had along the way; specifically his aunt, a police chief who also mentored me, and his uncle and cousin who are also in law enforcement.

"Because he couldn’t wait to become a police officer and White Bear wasn’t hiring, Luke put his talents to use as a Chisago County sheriff’s deputy in 2019. Although he enjoyed his time there, his heart remained at White Bear and when we started another hiring process, he applied.

We are happy Luke has come home to White Bear Lake."

Last but not least is Officer Jerome Carey. He too, started his law enforcement career in White Bear Lake. "One thing that has influenced Jerome and his decision to pursue the path he has were the events of 9/11. He is old enough to remember the day and the impact of the role that police and fire served during the events that day," Swanson told council. "No doubt, all of this stuck with him. He has encountered challenges along the way and worked hard to get to where he is today."

Carey graduated in law enforcement from Inver Hills College. To boost his resume, he applied for the White Bear Lake police reserve in 2014 and served as a reserve volunteer

for two years. He also worked as a corrections officer at Oak Park Heights prison until he was hired by the Minneapolis Police Department in 2016. "He was appreciative for starting his career there but, like the others here tonight, Jerome felt it was time to return to where he started," Swanson said. "He is ready to make the White Bear Lake Police Department his home."

In closing, Chief Swanson said the three officers have a strong desire to serve the community and are dedicated to the profession: "All bring vast experience, determination to represent the city well and each selected White Bear Lake for the right reasons."

Age 71 of White Bear Lake, died suddenly surrounded by his wife and children on Oct. 23, 2021. Greg is preceded in death by his father, Thomas A. Thompson; mother, Jean LaVonne Thompson; mother-in-law (Doris), and father-in-law (Orville). He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Becky Thompson; children, Tom (Tiffany), Ted (Janice), Theresa (Brian); and 9 grandchildren, Maren, Gaven, Caden, Allyson, Brayden, Brianna, Emmett, Norah, and Lucas.

Greg was born and raised in Minneapolis and graduated from Brown Institute. He started his career at Shaak Electronics then moved onto Dayton Hudson Corp and Target for over 20 years.

Then he purchased S&M Electro-Tech where he enjoyed talking about radios, vintage cars, and speakers with all of his customers. Outside the working world, Greg was an active volunteer in Boy Scouts and church committees. He enjoyed spending time at the cabin, fishing, hunting and woodworking. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren doing these activities. Greg had a love of old music, antique cars, food, and activities with family and friends. A visitation was held on Monday, Nov. 1 from 5pm - 7pm at Bradshaw Funeral Home.

A service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to either: Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake (1660 Birch Lake Avenue in White Bear Lake 55110) or Antique Auto Club of America (112 NE 5th St., Melrose, MN 56352).

Age 70 of White Bear Lake, passed away October 24 after a brief illness.

Born in Brazil, Indiana, Mike moved to Minnesota to join 3M’s Finance group.

After retiring from 3M, he enjoyed working at Cooks of Crocus Hill for several years, but his true passion was always Christmas, especially his light display.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Ruth Weaver. He is survived by his wife Anne; sister Lynne Barrett; father-in-law William Houghtby; sister-in-law Carol Houghtby; brothers-in-law Bruce (Diane) Houghtby and David (Pearl Kilbride) Houghtby; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held Wednesday, November 3 at the TRIA EVENT CENTER, 5959 Centerville Rd., North Oaks, MN from 3-6pm with time at 4pm to share your favorite Mike stories. Mel Boehland: Football, travel among his passions

To say football was Mel Boehland’s passion would be an understatement.

“It was a huge passion,” said Pat Boehland, widow of the man who died Oct. 7 of COVID-19 complications.

Mel Boehland was born in 1943 in Bertha, Minnesota, the first of three sons to a farm family. After starring in football and basketball at BerthaHewitt High School, he was recruited to play football at the University of North Dakota (UND).

Listed at 6-foot-3 and weighing 250 pounds, Boehland lettered three years with the former Fighting Sioux (now the Fighting Hawks).

Following his collegiate playing days and graduation from UND, he joined teammate Dave Osborn in signing with the Minnesota Vikings in 1965.

Osborn, as you might remember, went on to a productive playing career as a running back after being selected in the draft.

Boehland, a Shoreview resident, became a longtime friend of his teammates, including Pete Porinsh.

“As a small kid from Williston (N.D.), when

I saw Mel at football practice, he was the biggest man I’d ever seen. I didn’t want to run into him,” Porinsh said. “He was genuine, funny and considerate.

“I enjoyed knowing him. I especially enjoyed hearing about his life and successes after UND.” Boehland, a defensive tackle, was signed as a free agent, but didn’t get to play with the NFL team. His playing days included stints with not-so-well-known teams — the Calgary Stampeders, Chicago Owls and Des Moines Warriors.

After his playing days, he worked with youth in Iowa as an elementary physical education teacher, then moved to the Twin Cities. He is credited with starting the football program at Northwest College (now the University of Northwestern) in Roseville.

His 15-year coaching record from 1974-88 at Northwestern was 77-56-1. One season at North Park College in Chicago wasn’t as successful: his team went 1-8.

So, he turned to the insurance business, first with Allstate, then as an independent serving the area out of his office in White Bear Lake, beginning in 1990 and continuing

until his death. The insurance company will be sold, Pat Boehland said, and she will continue with her own management business, which is located in the same building as her husband’s on Highway 96.

She is left with a lot of memories, including worldwide travel.

“We’ve been to every continent except Antarctica,” she said.

“His favorite was Scotland. There was something there that grabbed him, maybe the agriculture.”

That may be evident by the fact that Mel was developing a white tomato with the idea of producing white tomato ketchup. “We have a prototype — white Bloody Mary mix,” Pat said.

He also was active in what she termed “the investment breeding of cattle,” and was involved in a partnership that raised high-end cattle.

“He was always into new and creative endeavors,” Pat said.

Allen Anderson’s friendship with Boehland started after they met at a funeral. They later attended professional hockey and football games together. “... I could tell he was a passionate and kind man,” Anderson said of their meeting. “Our friendship grew. I enjoyed listening to his gardening techniques, his travels, his cattle operations.

“I only knew Mel for a few years, but my life is richer because of it.”

most memorable, Pat said, was Mel’s work with people.

“One of his biggest attributes was how he developed people,” she said. “He was such a mentor to a lot of people. He always found a common interest with so many people.”

Boehland is survived by his wife of 28 years; his three daughters, Juanita (Mark Appleton), Sarah (Andy Wilke), Suzanne Boehland;

stepsons Jason Maltzen (Tess Snyder), Andrew (Kirsten) Maltzen; nine grandchildren; brothers Virgil (Lila) Boehland, Lyle Boehland (Marie Englebrecht); and many nieces and nephews.

Results of arts district study presented to council WHITE BEAR LAKE — Findings from the Arts Culture and Education Area study, ACE for short, were presented to City Council Oct. 26.

Community Development Director Anne Kane introduced Rita Trapp, with HKGi, who presented findings from a study launched last December by community partners who want to understand how existing and future plans such as Rush Line and the Bruce Vento Trail impact the arts area of the city.

That area is defined as west of Hwy. 61 and north of Sixth Street

and includes White Bear Center for the Arts, White Bear Lake Area Schools and the Hanifl Performing Arts Center.

Study partners hired HKGi to interview participants and gather information with the main areas of focus to identify how plans interrelate and to explore potential opportunities for synergy, collaboration and shared facilities such as parking and pedestrian crossings.

"It’s important we connect to residential neighborhoods," Trapp said.

Improving east-west connections through the high school campus, connections to the Bruce Vento Trail and connections to and through the arts organizations are potential actions named in the study. Improving space for pedestrians on Long Avenue was on the list, but that will take time and conversations with the county, Trapp said. Also desired is to prioritize a pedestrian crossing on Division Street and Hwy. 61. One question that needs addressing is how pedestrians downtown can move to the arts district. A wayfinding

plan for the area is recommended using landmarks like the Rush Line bus station behind Beartown.

Other recommendations included creation of an artist-in-residence program with accessory dwelling units for artist housing, public access to the wetland area north of WBCA, and art easements in the area to "activate the public realm at street level."

Trapp’s presentation will be given to the school board Nov. 8; a neighborhood meeting was held Nov. 1. No specific next steps have been identified, Trapp said.

Council Member Doug Biehn said the plans for his ward are exciting.

He asked Trapp about the feasibility of an "artistic" pedestrian bridge spanning Hwy. 61. "Is it workable or affordable?" he asked.

Trapp replied a bridge should be part of a downtown mobility study.

Council Member Bill Walsh pointed out that county-owned Long Avenue serving the arts facilities is in rough shape. "A lot of creativity can go into that, but it’s not our street," he said.

Public Works Director Paul Kauppi noted that the county would like to turn back Long Avenue at some point to the city. "That is why maintenance is minimal until the county figures out right of way issues with the railroad and what to do," he said.

Kane said the ACE presentation will be posted on the city website at whitebearlake.org.

"We’re doing our best to get word out that this has been completed," she said.

CDC approves COVID-19 booster shots for eligible populations

COVID-19 booster shots are now widely available for qualifying Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued a recommendation that eligible populations receive a booster shot to improve the performance of their initial vaccines.

Individuals over 65 and those under 18 in age who live in long-term care settings, have underlying medical conditions or work or live in a high-risk setting who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine are now eligible for a third shot that will serve as a booster for those who are already fully vaccinated.

Of the nearly 15 million people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, those who are 18 and older who were vaccinated more than two or more months ago now qualify.

Pharmacist Mike Campfield of the Medicine Chest in White Bear Lake has seen a major uptick in immunizations since the CDC approved all three boosters Oct. 19. Prior to the announcement, the

Medicine Chest saw a record 49 shots in one day, all either initial COVID vaccines, flu shots or boosters, but now records are topping off in the hundreds: on Tuesday, Oct. 26, there were 133 total immunizations given at the pharmacy.

“So far, we’re at over 130 today,” said Campfield, who reported the numbers early afternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

The local pharmacy has seen its business boom with the onset of vaccine approvals. Campfield says they’ve been able to staff two pharmacists instead of just one during the day to keep up with demand.

“People are amazed with the ease of the walk-in appointments we have, and we’re back to where people are happy to just get the shots,” he noted.

For all three available COVID-19 vaccine boosters, the CDC has also approved mixing and matching shots. If individuals have questions on which vaccine is best for them, they can ask their pharmacist for a recommendation.

Campfield says there has been no shortage of vaccines, so those who want a vaccine and qualify can get their boosters at their own pace and see which vaccine works best for each person.

Loon Chronicles VI: Lookin’ good

Another two weeks of spectacular weather for spending time in the boat watching the Loon chicks and the Coots. Unfortunately, not much has changed for the Coots. They continue to gather in ever expanding rafts, primarily in the War Zone, darting in and out of the bulrushes. It does not take much to rile the Coots and send them into dizzying and chaotic take-offs and mad dashes for the bulrushes. Last week, a large group of Coots suddenly erupted into flight, with many crashing into each other. It was hard to tell what triggered the commotion, but it was pandemonium on steroids. There never appears to be a leader amongst the Coots, just a whole lot of nervous energy and angst. We are still waiting for the migratory waterfowl to arrive for their layover as they make their way south. The Loon chicks, on the other hand, clearly

have the upper hand and the lake is their oyster. The chicks have become harder to spot because they are spending most of their time diving and fishing. We have not seen any fish battles above water, for weeks. Most of the action now goes on underwater. On two of our outings, the Loon chick popped up not far from our boat and, once again, just stared at us, looking right into my camera.

Love that when that happens! The chick has moved on to a new buddy, that has a dark mark on top of its bill, making it easy to identify. Yesterday, we spotted the chick and two other chicks circling each other, with a few head bobs and stare downs; all behaviors they undoubtedly observed the adult Loons displaying during the summer. They still have much to learn, but it certainly is entertaining watching them try to act like adult Loons. Once the

lake starts to freeze, the chicks will start their 1,170-1,570-mile journey south. In the meantime, they will continue to bulk up on fish and build their strength. Just like last year, the Loon parents prepared their chick well for what lies ahead and we have every reason to believe that the chick will have a successful migration.

Thank you everyone on and around the lake for keeping a watchful eye on the chick and sharing the lake. We will close out Loon Chronicles VI in November with a retrospective photo montage and things to ponder in anticipation of the return of the Loons in April 2022.

GRADING SYSTEM: Learning is the goal for middle–schoolers FROM PAGE 1

used, since its weight can disproportionately drag down grades and make it tougher for students to recover and succeed in school.

“We need our middle school children to view learning as an ongoing process,” said Sunrise Park Principal Christina Pierre. “Even if you’re not passing yet, you’re on the road.”

For example, under the former grading system if a student receives a B and a C on two tests and then misses or receives a failing grade below 50 percent on the third test, the scores would average into an overall failing grade in the class, even though the student had two passing grades.

Under the new system, the missed test would be considered at the 50 percent mark, averaging the total score out to a D. For a student caught up in the circumstances of a stressful or unpredictable environment outside

school, this change can make a world of difference.

When learning the material is the goal rather than punishment for missing the test, the road to progress is easier for the student, Pierre explained.

“Starting at 50 percent really just corrects and allows us to give that “I” range the exact same range as any letter grade,” Pierre said.

The policy aims to evaluate students only on their learning, and not on behaviors or circumstances that are sometimes outside of the student’s control.

“We’re taking all the other factors out of the grade,” Pierre said. “We’re not going to include whether it was turned in on time, or if the student was late to class, or extra credit. All those things will skew the grade. We want to measure exactly what the student knows and is able to do. We’re elevating the learning.”

The policy also establishes a 10-day

window for revisions and retakes.

“Not every kid gets it the first time.

Some students need more time to learn something than others,” Pierre said. “We don’t want a student to go retake a test they just did poorly on.

We want them to take some time to make sure that they actually learn the material before they go into the retake.”

Sunrise parents have been supportive of the change, Pierre said. But some critics of this grading system are concerned that students won’t have an incentive to learn and behave well if they are not graded on things like attendance and behavior.

However, there are many other ways to manage the behavioral attributes of the school environment, explained Assistant Superintendent Alison Gillespie. This includes school consequences, communication with parents, positive referrals and other responses outside of the evaluation of academic knowledge.

“People worry that grades won’t be motivating to students if it’s not this sorting system,” Gillespie said. “All of us have been part of a system that sorted us out. Kids want to learn.

Kids like school. When we can talk to them about learning, it doesn’t shake out that way. We really are communicating around the learning, and we’re not going to let them opt out of learning.”

At the high school level, where students earn credit toward graduation, students who aren’t performing well in classes receive a no-grade status rather than a failing grade. It is becoming more common among Minnesota school districts to use strategies like no-grades and incompletes, giving students every chance to demonstrate their progress and be held accountable for their work.

“It’s not lowering expectations for kids,” Gillespie said. “We’re not going to give up. We expect them to learn.”

Journey to recovery: Local teen shares experience with students

Gavin Nelson was 12 years old when he started using drugs. After an overdose a year ago, he is on the road to recovery and sobriety.

“I really didn't have a good home environment or home life. I was hanging out with freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school, and I just wanted to fit in,” he said. “I had an older brother who didn't do drugs, but his best friend at the time smoked weed and did other drugs, so that's how I was introduced to drugs.”

Nelson, 19, was born in Stillwater. He grew up in both Stillwater and White Bear Lake. Nelson said both of his parents were addicts: his mom's addiction was alcohol and his dad's was meth and cocaine.

“My addiction didn't start at 12 years old, my addiction started when I was born,” Nelson said. “I had that in my genes. There is not anything in my life that is not addicting to me.” He said it doesn't matter what it is — drugs, food, sex, money, gambling or video games: “I have a very addictive, mentally obsessive personality.”

In early middle school he used drugs to fit in, get attention from his parents and find acceptance. “My parents were in denial about it,” Nelson said. “I didn't think I had a problem because my parents were addicts.” In high school he used drugs to cope with anxiety and depression and trauma from his childhood, and then it became an addiction. “The addictive personality that I had became even worse,” he said.

Nelson said he started abusing prescription drugs and by his senior year at White Bear Lake High School, it was bad.

“I ruined a lot of things in White Bear Lake with vandalism and getting into trouble with the law,” Nelson said. “I hung around a group of people that caused a lot of chaos in that town. We got

into a lot of fights by the Cup and Cone, stealing cars and stuff like that.”

Nelson said 14 friends and family members of his have died from a drug overdose, including his biological father.

During quarantine, Nelson felt that he lost his future because he saw the world coming to an end. Then things came to a head a year ago in October when Nelson got a “bad batch” of meth laced with fentanyl and overdosed.

“What I do remember is I was working at a vape shop, and my boss told me to go home. I went home and detoxed in my room for six days and got sober by my own will. Then I turned myself into a treatment center,” he recalled.

That decision changed his life in the right direction.

He started working as a youth prevention advocate for Know the Truth (KTT), a substance use prevention program that targets teenagers and reaches approximately 60,000 students each year in more than 300 high schools throughout the state. The program uses a peer-to-peer format in which presenters share their personal stories and struggles with substance use, stripping away any glamour or myths that may exist.

Nelson is one of those presenters. He recently shared his story at Stillwater High School and said he knew a lot of the students, because he grew up with them. “Some of them came to me after and gave me a hug,” he said.

Nelson is a big advocate for young people to become sober and said when he learned more about KTT it helped him realize this is what he should be doing in his life — to show other young people they are not alone.

“The way that my life has become now, I have a future of becoming that person and be that voice,” Nelson said.

“What I think is so amazing about Know the Truth is I get to be that voice, and it

shapes me into the person I never thought I could become — a role model, a positive influence and a leader. This is the stuff that's going to keep me clean.”

Mika Nervick, KTT program coordinator, said students are asked to take an anonymous survey after each presentation. Here are the survey results so far this school year: • 30% of high school students reported using a substance at least once.

• After hearing the presentation, students are six times less likely to use than they were before.

• 83% of students will quit using or use less after hear-

ing the presentation.

“We've been blessed by having Gavin on the team. He relates to the students very well,” Nervick said. “If we can save even one kid, that's what it's all about.”

Nelson goes to support groups, has a lot of mentors he reaches out to and is thankful for his job at KTT. “This job is a big part of my recovery journey as well as sharing my story and what I've been through,” Nelson said. “I know if I use, I lose everything that I got.”

Currently, Nelson has a great relationship with his parents and said he wants to make amends to the community he hurt. “I

want to do something for my community that will make an impact on people,” he said.

“Not for myself, but for other people.”

Nelson's goal for the future is to open his own treatment center for adolescents and start an organization for teens who struggle with addiction or who have lost someone to addiction.

“My life now is a life I never thought I could have,” he said. “If you would have asked me four years ago what I'd be doing in my life now, I would have said, ‘either dead or in jail.’”

David, who is also leading the anti-Rush Line Coalition opposed to the bus rapid transit project and its disruption to the Bruce Vento Trail going to St. Paul, queried Scott Yonke at the open house, demanding to know when and why the plan changed.

Yonke is Ramsey County's parks and recreation director of planning and development.

"Last time I went to a meeting, it was Long Avenue to Eagle Street to Hugo Road," David told the project leader.

"I'm not sure how this came to be."

The route in question is the 3.5-mile extension from Whitaker Street to County Road J that follows Lincoln Avenue to Bald Eagle Avenue to Bald Eagle Boulevard, then Taylor Avenue and Hugo Road.

Yonke replied that a 2019 meeting narrowed the extension down to three routes, including the latest rendition.

"One cut through the school and up to Hugo Road; another tried to get over to Long Avenue.

An outcome of that meeting was this was the preferred route," he said.

David asked who made that decision, but didn't get what he considered a satisfactory answer.

"I don't remember being notified that I would be significantly impacted by this route until today," he told Yonke.

The 55-year resident of Bald Eagle Boulevard believes Long Avenue is a better option. The county road is parallel to railroad tracks, and has a wide and

underused right of way.

"The county's choice goes through residential neighborhoods. I don't see a good fit for a regional trail through residential streets," added David.

Concurring was Beth Artner, another longtime Bald Eagle homeowner who said the original route makes more sense.

"We can get pollinators along that corridor, and it won't inconvenience a lot of people," she observed.

Artner sent out about 100 invitations to homeowners affected by the route, encouraging them to attend the open house. "Real people are being impacted by these decisions, and it seems like government or entities responsible for these projects really don't appreciate or want citizen involvement," she maintained.

She was "heartened" to see the turnout at the open house and how people were engaged in the process, Artner said.

"People on the opposite side of the issue talked to me and even though

we didn't initially agree, I appreciated that we talked and came to an understanding and agreed to work together."

The Phase 2 extension is the last section of trail. Planners have been working on a design since 2018 to refine alternative corridors out of the rail right of way. The master plan for the 13.3-mile trail from St. Paul to the county boundary in White Bear Township was completed in 1993.

Another issue is converting a portion of Bald Eagle Boulevard to a one-way from Park Avenue to Taylor Avenue. If a two-way with trail is preferred, it could mean impacts such as acquiring more road right of way to fit a trail. If converted, oneway traffic would travel northbound.

schematics. We are trying to get feedback, what people like and don't like. The design is not set. It's very early in the design stage."

The county hopes to have the predesign completed by end of 2021.

The No. 2 seeded Mahtomedi Zephyrs (182) face No. 3 Academy of Holy Angels (14-3-2) in the Class AA semifinals 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

No. 1 Orono (18-1-1) faces No. 4 Willmar

(18-0-2) at 12:30 p.m.

The championship will be played Saturday, Nov. 6, at 3:30 p.m. The third-place game will be played Thursday, Nov. 4, at West St. Paul Athletics Center, 11 a.m.

Jordan Hull, Mahtomedi’s leading ground-gainer for two years, rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns (66 and six yards) in a 42-18 win over Cretin-Derham Hall. The 6-foot-1, 189-pound senior has racked up 13 touchdowns and 961 yards in 123 carries (a 7.8 average) this fall after logging 510 yards and six TD’s in five games last year. Hull is also 2-for-2 on halfback passes for 56 yards, leads the Zephyrs in tackles with 49 at linebacker and serves as punter with a 33.4-yard average. “He just loves to play. He’s like a kid out there,” coach Dave Muetzel said. “He runs really hard, but can make you miss, too. On defense, he makes tackles from sideline to sideline.”

Mahtomedi had four of the top five and five of the top 14. Team scoring was Mahtomedi 27, St. Anthony Village 51, Chisago Lakes 79, Hill-Murray 135 and St. Paul Como Park 158.

Zephyr junior Sarah Brings was third (20:17), freshman Gabby Fox fourth (20:35), senior Claire Wirka fifth (20:36) and junior Greta Liner 14th (21:56). Their 6-7 runners also did well, with senior Anna Thompson 18th (22:25) and junior Juliana Nyberg 20th (22:57) among 46 runners.

This is the first year of a three-class system so sections have fewer teams. In Section 4AA, only five of the 11 schools had a full team, and four other schools sent partial teams.

Mahtomedi will compete as a team at the state meet Saturday at St. Olaf College.

Loss’ return helps Zephyrs beat Raiders 42-18

Two of Mahtomedi’s best athletes were injured in the first week of the football season. One of them returned for the Zephrys’ ninth game, and playoff opener, on Saturday.

Ethan Loss, recovered from a hamstring injury, made an immediate impact to help the Zephyrs beat Cretin-Derham Hall 42-18, catching a 37-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Brandt on their opening drive and hauling in five for 131 yards in the game.

“It’s definitely a boost for our offense. And more so, it’s good for Ethan,” coach Dave Muetzel said. “He’s been working so hard and chomping at the bit to get back.”

The Zephyrs (7-2), who had a first-round bye as top seed, advanced to the Section 4, Class 5A finals at home Friday against No. 7 Tartan (3-7), whom they beat 31-0 in conference. The Titans upset

No. 2 St. Paul Central 48-28 and No. 6 Highland Park 42-18.

Loss, a senior and also a baseball standout, and junior Will Underwood, also a basketball standout, would have given the Zephyrs a formidable tandem at receiver all season. Underwood is hoping his leg injury will be healed by mid-season in basketball.

Jordan Hull ran for 147 yards in 10 carries with touchdowns of 66 and six yards. The Zephyrs rushed for 305 yards and passed for 196 behind offensive linemen Jason Lynch, John-Paul Johnson, Caden Donahue, Emmett Poppelman, and Samuel Hemenway. Nicholas Beiersdorf carried nine times for 60 yards with a nine-yard TD, Jonathan Harvey five times for 54 yards with a twoyard TD, and Brandt six for 22 with a one-yard TD. Brandt completed eight of 13 passes for 173 yards, with one intercepted. Catching one pass each were Billy Arlandson (24

yards), Quinn Walek (13 yards) and Gunnar Woods (five yards) — and Brandt himself for a 23yard gain on a toss from Hull, setting up his TD sneak.

Joey Heinsch was 6-for-6 on extra points and pinned the Raiders deep on all seven kickoffs. The lanky senior played soccer until this year when he opted to lend his powerful leg to the football squad, a huge boost for the Zephyr special teams: “On almost every kickoff, opponents have to start on the 20-yard line,” Muetzel noted, referring to touchbacks.

Heinsch is 33-for-36 on extra points and 2-for-2 on field goals.

Cretin-Derham Hall (37) was trailing 28-0 when quarterback Luke Floysland had a shoulder injury.

Strong Bear season ends with loss to Lakeville North

White Bear Lake’s best football season since 2012 ended with their most lopsided loss since 2014 on Friday night. The Lakeville North Panthers came to town and humbled the Bears 39-0 in the first round of Class 6A playoffs.

Lakeville North was 3-5 and seeded fifth in their quadrant while the Bears were 6-2 and seeded fourth.

This year the MSHSL divided Class 6A into Gold (the top programs) and Maroon divisions. The Panthers played a Gold schedule while the Bears were Maroon.

The Panthers were “not a typical 3-5 team or No. 5 seed,” said Bear coach Ryan Bartlett, pointing out competitive games they had with Top 10 teams. “They switched QB’s week 6 and they have taken off since.”

The Panthers enjoyed a 5-0 turnover edge — three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and two fumbles — as they handed the Bears, who’d been scoring 21 to 41 points each game, their first shutout in 25 games.

One highlight for the Bears was Anthony Lewis-Royal gaining 93 yards in 18 carries to push over 1,000 yards to a final 1,008. This was the first game he didn’t get into the end zone, though, finishing with 20 touchdowns.

The other highlight was the Bear defense stopping the Panthers three times inside the two with the score 14-0.

The Panthers were not stopped otherwise. Their touchdowns were Gavyn Schraufnagel’s two-yard run, Alex Kasak’s four-yard run, Riley Grossman’s 51-yard pass to Najee Nelson, Tommy Niggeling’s 19-yard run, and Ryan Brodin’s 19-yard interception return. Grossman was 5-for-8 for 143 yards. The

Panthers rushed for 183 yards.

The Bears had a season-low 197 yards. Connor Gerrell hit 13 of 21 passes for 111 yards with three pickoffs. Alex Lockwood caught six for 54 yards and Vatel Henderson five for 52.

The 39-point deficit was the largest since a 49-0 loss to Mounds View in 2014. The Bears’ 6-3 record was their first winning season since the 2012 team went 6-3. They remain without a playoff win since 2014.

“We had a great season,” Bartlett said, citing the seniors for huge improvements since ninth grade.

“Going 6-3, hosting a 6A playoff game, and the buzz they created was unbelievable. They set a standard that we will continue to reach. Our program numbers were up this year, and we had success at all four levels on the field.”

Boys x-country: Bears’ Mattson is section champ, team reaches state Ernie Mattson churned to the Section 4AAA individual championship on Wednesday and Luke Williams placed third, leading White Bear Lake to a runner-up team finish, good for advancement to the state meet.

Mattson, a senior, hit the tape in 15:29 at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, five seconds ahead of

Stillwater’s Jonathan Roux. He’s the Bears’ first section champ in at least 20 years.

“Roux is phenomenal at pacing and I let him do the work,” Mattson said, adding that the pace was faster than he anticipated. “I started to pull away with about 800 to go, which is usually where I dominate in a race. My finishing kick comes from my natural speed.

I took the downhill into the finish as fast as my legs could carry me.”

The course was “brutal” with massive hills and constant turns, he said: ”I have never exerted that much in a race.”

Williams, a sophomore, was third in 16:07. The Bears also had senior Mike Hoffman in ninth place (16:38), senior Sador Wondeson 16th (17:06) and freshman Isaac Kolstad 17th (17:16).

Hoffman, Wondeson and Kolstad had personal bests.

The Bears will run at state Nov. 6 at St. Olaf College. They’re the 13th state qualifying team in 15 years.

Stillwater won with 33 points. The Bears had 46, Woodbury 70, St. Paul Central 114, Tartan 150, North St. Paul 176 and St. Paul Harding 229.

Bear coach Dan Kovacich said Mattson was the first section champ in his 20 years in the program, after having a few runners-up.

“What makes Ernie great is his off season

training,” Kovacich said. “For the past three seasons, Ernie has put in between 400 to 600 miles over the winters and summers — averaging 40 to 60 mile weeks.”

Mattson reflected, “It is awesome to win a race, any race. I came home and my mom told me right away that I deserved a win for once in a field of such competitive and incredible guys.”

This is the first year of a three-class system, resulting in the Bears’ section having half the teams it formerly had.

Girls X-country: Four Bears earn state trip; team 3rd at sectional Four White Bear Lake girls qualified for the state cross country meet while the Bears placed third among complete five teams at the Section 4AAA meet Wednesday.

State qualifiers are senior Lily Schneider, who placed sixth (20:01),

junior Katelyn Porter in 12th (20:21), senior Maggie Blanding in 14th (20:30), and senior Madie Bystrom in 16th (20:48). The fifth counter was junior Maia Nebo in 20th (21:14).

“I believe they were season bests for almost everyone,” said Melissa Gacek, coach along with Shawn Gritzmacher.

Gacek noted they were much-improved from their seventh-place at conference. ”They executed the race plan perfectly,” Gacek said.

The top two teams advance to state, along with the top six individuals among the other teams. State will be held Nov. 6 at St. Olaf College.

Stillwater had 37 points, Woodbury 43, White Bear Lake 68, St. Paul Central 90, and Tartan 159. Iris Guider of St. Paul Central was first in 18:27.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — Raymond William Kidd, 32, of White Bear Township, has been convicted of theft of movable property. Kidd has been sentenced to 1 year in jail.

On May 2, 2019, police received a call that a bronze statue of children reading books on a log was stolen from outside an apartment complex at 7260 Guider Drive, Woodbury. The statue was valued at

$22,500.

Between 4:40 and 4:50 a.m., the complainant saw a man walk up to the statue and start shaking it. The man then got into a U-Haul and left at a high speed.

The complainant noticed the statue was gone when the man left.

On May 3, 2019, officers located the U-Haul parked in the driveway of a home in Anoka County. Kidd was identified as the driver of the U-Haul.

Upon investigation of the van, officers located the statue, which had been taken apart. Kidd was later positively identified by the complainant in a lineup.

Kidd will not pay a fine, and restitution will be held open for 30 days.

At 11:45 p.m. Oct. 17, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducting a business check at Jimmy’s Bar and Grill in Vadnais Heights noticed an intoxicated individual exit the bar and make his way to a parked vehicle. When deputies approached the subject inside his vehicle, they warned him not to drive in his condition and

directed him to exit the vehicle.

The subject agreed to go back inside the bar and call for a ride.

However, deputies stayed around long enough to observe the subject get into his vehicle a short time later and drive out of the bar parking lot.

Deputies followed the vehicle and observed it cross over the lane markers several times before they pulled it over in the 3000 block of Labore Road.

The suspect admitted to consuming alcohol before driving and said he lived just down the road and thought

he could safely make it home despite being warned not to drive.

He failed standard field sobriety tests and a portable breath test with a “quick capture” blood alcohol content of 0.3.

At jail, the subject failed to provide consistent breath samples during two separate testing sequences and displayed conduct described as “intentional” and “refusal to take the test.” He has two qualified prior DWI convictions from 2018 and 2020, which will be used to enhance the current offenses.

White Bear Lake High School performs ‘Into the Woods’

Many of us know the typical tales of “happily ever after,” but junior Meg Petersen assures us that the story of “Into the Woods” doesn’t quite end there.

White Bear Lake High School is set to perform Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Into the Woods,” beginning Nov. 12.

Director Wendy Suoja explains the pandemic drove the choice of the school’s musicals for the last couple of years. Last year was scaled back with “Songs for a New World,” which was a nontraditional musical selected to accommodate the restrictions of the pandemic.

But this year, Suoja and her students will go allout with this modern classic.

“We wanted a show that could have a flexible-sized cast if needed. There are a lot of characters and a lot of leads and many roles. We have a lot of kids who are capable and talented, so we chose to show that.”

Unlike other shows in the past that have had more of a jukebox feel, like “Footloose” and “Mamma Mia,” “Into the Woods” has more of a classic musical theater feel with a larger pit orchestra.

“Our program has a great history with parents, musicians and crew who are all really invested. The program is very ‘go big or go home,’ and this is our opportunity to ‘go big,’” says Suoja.

Suoja didn’t shy away from a musically challenging show, saying she knew it wasn’t going to be easy with characters bouncing off each other in musical numbers.

Petersen, who will be playing Cinderella, is up to the challenge.

“I’m a singer before I’m an actor, and this show is very song-heavy with really challenging music, which is really fun for me. I sing all the time, and to have something new and exciting is really rewarding for me.”

Petersen explains the uniqueness of the show is a two-for-one deal, with the first act juxtaposing the second. “It’s great for all ages, because little kids love to see the princesses and fairy tales they know in Act 1, but it’s also for adults because in Act 2, it’s all about life lessons and it’s a little more deep.”

Playing her dream role of Cinderella, Petersen says while her life is quite different than that of her character’s, she admires that Cinderella discovers

that she wants more out of life, has big dreams and turns out to be very independent.

“And I get to wear a big dress,” Petersen notes.

Suoja says she loves seeing the cast members’ connection to their characters and seeing the whole production come alive. To add to some of the magic, the crew has planned some special effects and created a set to mimic the feeling of venturing into a forest.

In many ways, the show is the first of its kind, complete with Sondheim-worthy complexities in staging and music and being the first musical back after the hardships of the pandemic.

“Our set is beautiful, and the production value is really just great and the pit is really amazing.

Everyone in the cast and crew have worked so hard on the show, and this is the first time we get to go back to theater after COVID,” said Petersen.

Excitement is rightly at an all-time high after a year of expecting the unexpected during the pandemic. But now, after weeks of rehearsal, “Into the Woods” will give White Bear Lake High School (and its audience members) the unexpected happily ever after they’ve been searching for.
