For whom the bells toll: 100th anniversary of Armistice Day DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

Bells will be ringing at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, just like they did 100 years ago to herald the end of World War I. This time, another sort of commemoration will take place at that hour on that day to honor veterans of that war and all wars. The Soldiers Memorial Flagpole at Washington Park will be officially rededicated after a successful campaign by the White Bear Lake Lions Club to restore the monument, built in 1939. The flagpole was dedicated on Veterans Day the same year and its stone base completed the following spring. It serves as a patriotic tribute to all soldiers. The 11th of November is observed in Europe and North America and is also called Remembrance Day or Veterans Day. It marks the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, which ended hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. The cease-fire came into force at 11 a.m., being the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. A clipping from the White Bear Press Nov. 14, 1918, entitled “Bells Ring Out News,” recalls the scene in town on the morning of Nov. 11 when Armistice was declared in the Great War: “Early Monday morning; the ringing of the fire bell, to which was quickly added the tones of the Episcopalian, Catholic and Presbyterian Church, and school bells, announced to the sleeping citizens of White Bear that the great day had come, and that the armistice, which practically ended the great war, had been signed.” An impromptu celebration ensued, according to the 100-year-old article. A parade was “hastily organized,” which set out from the fire engine house, headed by members of the White Bear School Band. “Co. K fell in behind the band,” noted the Press, “and then came a good turnout of the ladies of the Red Cross. A mounted troop of men followed, dragging a dummy intended to represent the defeated kaiser and behind that a coffin to receive the remains when the time should come.”

Living with Lyme disease inspiration for foundation BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

For 16 years, Lisa Najarian had symptoms she couldn't explain for an infection she couldn't treat. That changed in 2015 with a positive diagnosis for Lyme disease and with her newfound energy, Najarian and her husband Pete have launched a foundation to help others battling the malady. It is the mission of the Grant couple to connect people to Lyme-literate physicians through their

Twin Cities Lyme Foundation. Launched in July, the nonprofit foundation is dedicated to early detection and accurate diagnosis of Lyme disease. Lisa Najarian considers the foundation her calling now that she's able to lead a more normal life. She's not completely recovered from Lyme disease — there is no cure for the tickborne illness — but once diagnosed, a regimen of oral antibiotics has given her a semblance of her life back.
