It is no surprise that the holiday season is going to look very different this year.

The restrictions are everchanging, so families need to remain flexible and try to find ways to celebrate while keeping the ones they love safe.

When a north metro family heard temperatures were going to be in the 70s earlier this month, they sprang into action to coordinate an early, safe Thanksgiving celebration with family members.

White Bear Lake resident Corinna Morse, an eighth-grade counselor at Centennial Middle School, said she wanted to find a way to celebrate to cheer up her parents, Peggy Hayden, 78, and Dave Hayden, 81, who live in Stillwater. In addition to the risks inherent because of their age, Peggy is also in a high-risk category due to an auto immune disease.

Q and A with Karin Costa Q. Where did you grow up, and how long have you lived in Grant?

A. I grew up on a farm in Peosta, Iowa, just outside Dubuque. It was a cattle and hog farm as well as crops of field corn, hay and oats. Much different than our current farm of produce and greenhouse plants, but also much the same in many ways: hard work, long days outside in the sunshine or harsh elements, an appreciation for Mother Nature by experience, the opportunity to see firsthand what comes from nurturing seeds and the land, and feelings of accomplishment and pride in feeding our community.

I have lived in Grant/Mahtomedi since 1992 with my husband Ron and raised our two daughters here, Gina, 24 and Grace, 20.

Q. Tell us a little about Costa Farm.

A. Costa Farm is now 101 years old.

Ron's grandfather started the farm in Little Canada and it was moved here to Grant/Mahtomedi in 1990.

I married Ron in 1991 and have been farming with him since. I started taking produce to the White Bear farmers

market before we were married in 1990!

That 30 years has gone by quickly.

Q. What inspired you to write a book, and does it have any parallels to your experience at Costa Farm?

A. My life experience while growing up on a farm and currently farming inspired me to write this book.

Farming has been almost my entire life's work except for a few years after high school and before I was married, I was a dental hygienist.

The specific idea for my book, “Growing French Fries,” came to me one day as I was walking in our produce field.

I thought writing a book on how french fries come to fruition on our plate and the integral part the farmer plays in that is essential for children to understand. And it could be a fun story to tell as well.

Q. What is the message you hope young readers get from your book?

A. The message I hope children get from my book is how hard a farmer works to provide food for the community.

I also hope the storyline — how a particular food like french fries can be in disguise of something else (the potato) — sparks an interest to learn how other veggies are part of our diet, and possibly to spark a love of cooking or gardening.

A. The main character, Farmer Billie, is my dad.

SCHOOL BRIEFS Christmas story in time for holidays

Maria Marzitelli of White Bear Township, along with illustrator Taylor Goris, recently published a new children's book, a spiritual Christmas story titled “The Powers of Pippo the Purple Hippo.� The book is a fundraiser for the Patrick Marzitelli Science and Aviation Scholarship Fund, which has provided scholarships to White Bear Lake Area High School students interested in the science and aeronautics fields for the past nine years. The book can be purchased at the foundation's website, pmaviation.org.

The White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation recently awarded $8,47l.95 to nine Brosious Grant recipients. Theresa Stender, special education, Otter Lake Elementary, received a grant to provide new, novel, age-appropriate play activities and toys for students with developmental and cognitive disabilities and autism; Mark Misgen, Julie Nasvik and Keith Lockwood, Sunrise Park Middle School, received a grant to purchase 35-40 pairs of ice skates for use during gym class; Ann Zettel, Normandy Park Early Childhood, received a grant to provide children's books and take-home activities for families in the Family Literacy Class; Sandra Whitby, intervention/fifth grade, Lakeaires Elementary, received a grant to attend Orton Gilligham training to enhance her work with intervention students and help enrich the fifth grade reading curriculum; Traci Bowmaster and Beth Samuelson, Area Learning Center/Insight Program, received a grant to purchase a 360-degree web camera to simulate the circle format of the group work in the Insight Program; and Lindsay Lamwers, South Campus, received a grant to purchase a 3D printer for students to design and print personal protective equipment to distribute to students, staff and community members.

Staying home for the holidays

W

hen COVID-19 first made its way to Minnesota, I was hopeful that it would more or less be gone by the time summer rolled around. The thought of it lingering into the fall, much less through the holiday season, was inconceivable. But now, nearly nine months later, the worst of it seems to be in front of, rather than behind us, and beloved holiday celebrations are set to be another pandemic-induced cancellation. We all seem to be faced with the same moral quandary: What are the holidays without the people you love? And yet why risk gathering when it poses such a risk?

If this were an ordinary year, I’d be flying to Michigan to spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays (and my birthday, on Dec. 23) with nearly all of my immediate and extended family—my parents, sisters, brother-in-law, grandparents, aunts, Between uncles and cousins. But, of course, 2020 has been anything but ordinary, and the Lines instead of buying plane tickets and trying to pack as lightly as possible Elizabeth Callen to avoid paying for a checked bag, I’m trying to figure out how to bring some semblance of normalcy to this year’s celebration, despite the fact that I’ll be spending it solo.

Thankfully, I already have some practice. Last year, I opted to spend Thanksgiving alone, partially because I felt like I didn’t have the time, energy or money to travel, but mostly because my parents spent it vacationing in Hawaii, so I was left to my own devices. It was the first time I’ve spent the holiday by myself, which I was somewhat apprehensive about, especially as someone who gets lonely easily and looks forward to big family gatherings year-round.

However, I ended up finding a surprising amount of fulfi llment in my own quiet little celebration. I slept in, finished a book I had been struggling to find the time for, FaceTimed my parents, cooked a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for one and ate it while watching a movie. I missed my family, but the day to myself was a good one all the same, a much-welcomed respite in the middle of a chaotic time in my life.

I was hopeful that 2020 would bring me the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving alongside my family like normal, but unfortunately, it has not. I will miss them all again this year, but am trying not to spend too much time wishing I could change things that are out of my control. Instead, I am trying to control what I can: I can reduce my risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19 by staying home, I can still connect with my family and friends over Zoom, and—maybe best of all—I can cook precisely what I want to eat and don’t have to worry about hurting anyone’s feelings when I pass on the cranberry sauce or the Jello salad. It won’t be the same, and it will certainly be tinged with some sadness, but I think there is still some joy to be found despite it all.

Our individual choices have collective consequences—the chaos of 2020 has driven that home for me time and time again. As heartwrenching as it is to forgo cherished rituals and traditions, missing out on them this one year is far from the worst case scenario. Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving in October. COVID-19 cases spiked shortly afterwards, and experts said that the holiday gatherings were to blame. Here in Minnesota and throughout the U.S., the virus is surging and in-person Thanksgiving celebrations threaten to cause an even greater spike.

Maybe by giving up the normalcy of the holidays this year, we can ensure that we’ll have more to give thanks for next year. Thanksgiving will roll around again. Michigan will still be there, and so too, I hope, will my loved ones. For now, I’ll make due on my own with my solo Thanksgiving dinner—and be sure to give my cat an extra hug.

I wish you and all those you love good health and as much happiness as you can find this Thanksgiving, however far apart you may be.

Social media gift exchange actually illegal pyramid scheme

“Secret Santa” among colleagues, friends and family can be fun. A gift exchange among online friends you haven’t met, though, could carry a hefty consequence. These gift exchanges, while they look like innocent fun, are really pyramid schemes – and are considered illegal.

The “Secret Sister” gift exchange campaign quickly became popular a few years ago through Facebook promising Movers and posts participants would Shakers receive up to 36 gifts, in exchange Better Business for sending one Bureau gift. Each holiday season the scheme pops back up. A newer version of this scam revolves around exchanging bottles of wine; another suggests purchasing $10 gifts online.

How the scam works The scheme starts with a convincing invitation, either by email or social media, to sign up for what seems like a fun gift exchange.

All you must do is provide your name and address and personal information of a few additional friends, and tack this information on to a running list of people you’ve

never met on the internet. Next, it’s your turn to invite people to send a modest gift or bottle of wine to a stranger along with their friends, family and contacts.

The cycle continues, and you can be left with buying and shipping gifts for unknown individuals, in hopes that the favor is reciprocated by receiving the promised number of gifts in return. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen. Just like any other pyramid scheme, it relies on the recruitment of individuals and their participation to keep the scam afloat. Once people stop participating in the gift exchange, the gift supply stops as well, and leaves hundreds of disappointed people without their promised gifts.

It should be noted that pyramid schemes are illegal in the US and Canada. The U.S. Postal Inspection Services explains that these gift exchanges are considered a form of gambling and that participants could be subject to penalties such as jail time, fines or a lawsuit for mail fraud.

The next time someone promises a bounty of gifts or cash by mail, email, or social media, BBB recommends the following: • Ignore it! Keep in mind that pyramid schemes are international. Chain letters involving money or valuable items are illegal. Stop and ask, is it worth breaking the law or risking the exposure of your personal information?

• Report social media posts. If you receive an invitation to join a pyramid scheme disguised as a gift exchange on social media, report it. You can report these Facebook posts by clicking in the upper righthand corner and selecting “report post” or “report photo.”

• Never give your personal information to strangers. This will open you up to identity theft and other scams.

• Be wary of false claims. Some pyramid schemes try to win your confidence by claiming they’re legal and endorsed by the government. These imposter schemes are false as the government will never endorse illegal activity. No matter what they claim, pyramid schemes will not make you rich. You will receive little to no money back on your “investment” or gift exchange.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you to election workers In this season of thanks, I’d like to extend sincere gratitude to our neighbors, here in Minnesota and across our nation, who worked the polls for early balloting and on Election Day, and/or helped with processing and counting ballots. These individuals took on this vital civic work even in the face of the pandemic and with heightened rancor and divisiveness in our nation. They worked together from across the political spectrum, to achieve a fair and safe election.

In other areas of the country, some worked under duress, with protesters yelling at them. At times ballot counters required police protection as they left for home after an exhausting day’s work. Thankfully, that was not the case here in Minnesota. All poll workers, along with Secretaries of State from across our country, deserve our respect and gratitude.

I stood in the men’s department with tears running down my face, overcome at this thoughtful gesture. I brought the plaque home, told my husband the story, and he placed the plaque on his dresser.

Over the years, I’ve thought many times about that kind stranger. I’d like him to know that my husband saw that plaque every morning until he passed away in July. I’d like him to know that the plaque is still on his dresser because the message has meaning for the people that my husband has left behind. I hope that the kind stranger reads the White Bear Press and I hope that he recognizes himself in these words of gratitude. And I hope he knows that I wish him a Merry Christmas.

Allen W. (“Alley Cat”) Alberg A longtime resident of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Al passed away peacefully on November 15, 2020 at the age of 94. He was born on March 15, 1926 to Vera (Goldsmith) and Walter Alberg of Cumberland, Wisconsin.

The 1944 Cumberland High graduate enlisted in the US Marine Corps in the spring of ’44, a WWII veteran and member of VFW & American Legion. He was a computer programmer and part-time bartender. Al will be remembered for his incredible ability to tell jokes, make ice cream drinks and wiggle his ears. He also loved karaoke. Al was a happy, friendly guy who truly enjoyed life.

Preceded in death by wife Elaine and brother Robert Alberg (Geri).

Survived by daughters Linda Alberg (Tom Maloney) and Nancy Rosengren (Ric); brother Larry Alberg; grandson Joshua Morrison (Kristina).

Nonprofit leaders working hard Response to ‘Definition of racist’ letter In a letter to the editor to the White Bear Press Nov. 11, Mr. Charlie Kuhl shared with us that he is very generous to Haiti with his time, effort and money. That is commendable. And he was willing to share that he heard someone “holler” something at him when he went in to vote. He felt judged because of the color of his skin and the way he dressed.

What Mr. Kuhl experienced was someone expressing themselves using their First Amendment rights. Could Mr. Kuhl have been expressing his First Amendment rights with his clothing? I wonder if Mr. Kuhl may have been wearing a red hat with certain lettering.

Kindness found during retail therapy It was the day after Thanksgiving 2016. Our daughter was headed back to college and my husband was headed into chemotherapy, his next treatment after the radiation that followed his 2015 cancer diagnosis. Feeling melancholy, I decided to go to my happy place, Marshall’s in Maplewood. Wandering around, I stopped in the aisle of plaques with inspirational sayings. “Live your best life!” “Live, Laugh, Love!” My eyes settled on a plaque that spoke to my husband’s current situation. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” I thought about his upcoming chemo and took a picture of the plaque, a good message for the struggle ahead. A man in the same aisle asked me why I’d taken a picture of the plaque. I told him about my husband’s situation. He told me about his young daughter’s cancer, describing it as “the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through,” but said that she was doing fine now.

A half hour later, with my cart full of merchandise, this same man approached me after going through the

Age 72 of Grant Passed away at home on Nov. 5, 2020 of heart failure.

He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, later moving to Shawnee, Kansas where he attained his BSEE degree. After college, Jim formed his own company and moved around the country for many years consulting as an electrical engineer until he landed at 3M in Minnesota. He met his future wife of 35 years, Kathy, and never moved again. Jim enjoyed all sports, but especially baseball. Out of high school, Jim was asked to try out for the Chicago White Sox, but opted out for college instead. In his later years, his passion for playing sports led to his passion of coaching. Jim loved coaching his son’s Mahtomedi baseball, football and basketball teams. If Jim wasn’t coaching, you would likely find him in his garage, yard or vegetable garden, all of which he was extremely proud of. If you were friends of Jim’s son Joe, you likely knew about his jerky and pickling skills.

Don’t worry, he left us the recipes. Lastly, Jim enjoyed long road trips to either his property in Beaver Island, Michigan, where he loved to fish for largemouth bass, or to Galveston, Texas where he enjoyed going deep sea fishing. No matter the route, he was sure to visit many casinos along the way. Jim is preceded in death by his parents Forrest and Leanne. Survived by his wife Kathy; and son Joseph (Anna). A celebration of his life will be held next summer.

Sir, I would like you to know how disappointed I am with the lack of your leadership in Minnesota. Here we are eight months into the shutdown due to the (COVID-19) virus, and instead of totally opening up the state to churches, schools, restaurants and everything else that is under your lockdown rule, you are once again adding more restrictions. We never should have had a shutdown to begin with: just take a look at the states who trusted their citizens to do the right thing. Their economy is thriving.

Aren’t you even a little bit embarrassed when you informed our president to limit his last Minnesota rally to 250 people and thousands of people ignored your mandate and showed up anyway? Where was your leadership when you allowed the rioters in Minneapolis and St. Paul to burn down 181-plus businesses? You did absolutely nothing to stop it and allowed everything to burn down to the ground for 11 days before giving our president permission to call up the National Guard. The rioting would not have continued on nationwide had you stopped it dead in its tracks.

How do you justify keeping the abortion clinics, liquor stores and casinos open for business as usual? Are you aware of the fact that suicides and alcoholism are on the rise, or have you just swept these facts under the rug? Not to forget the harm you are doing to the children who need to be in school full time.

It is obvious to me you are not interested in being reelected for a second term or you would have made some drastic changes by now.

Gov. Waltz, I am praying for you that God takes the veil off your face so you can see the light before it is too late.

Ramsey County officials have found 318 absentee ballots that were not processed or counted in election returns in this month's general election.

Last week, the Ramsey County Election Canvassing Board held an emergency meeting to affirm that an “obvious error” was made by county election judges earlier this month. The 318 ballots were properly cast Saturday, Oct. 31, at the county election office in St. Paul, but were placed in an area designated for process ballots, which election staff found Nov. 13 during the post-election review process, according to a statement from the board.

“Election staff came upon one sealed box of absentee ballots unprocessed and sealed in signature envelopes.

The box was properly labeled as requiring processing but had been misplaced in an area of a secure storage faciity designated for sealed boxes of processed ballots,” the board said.

The 131 candidates affected by the error have been notified, though the board said that based on the precincts identified on the signature envelopes, they did not believe the outcome could be altered by the 318 ballots.

The official deadline to process absentee ballots has passed, but Ramsey County District Judge John Guthmann has ordered officials to open and count them all.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights A Bluetooth speaker and clothing were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle overnight Nov. 7-8 as it was parked in the 1000 block of County Road D. There are no suspects.

A stolen license plate was reported recovered Nov. 9 at a business in the 4200 block of White Bear Parkway. The plate was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and placed into property for destruction.

Deputies were dispatched Nov. 9 to a complaint of a male and female fighting in a parking lot in the 1100 block of County Road E. Both parties claimed nothing happened.

Employees at Spire Credit Union in the 900 block of County Road E on Nov. 9 reported an adult female trying to cash a check stolen from a Roseville woman after a teller became suspicious of the check's validity. During the delay, the suspect drove away. The check was part of mail stolen on Nov. 8.

Employees at Spire Credit Union in the 900 block of County Road E reported a female for depositing fake checks into her account Nov. 10 and bilking

the credit union out of more than $7,000. The case is under investigation.

Employees at an auto business in the 3400 block of Highway 61 reported a disheveled female for entering their business Nov. 10 requesting to test drive a new vehicle. The woman was denied. The subject returned several times with the same request and received the same result. Photo surveillance showed she was picked up by a suspicious vehicle, the license plate of which was on file as stolen.

A Circle Pines man, 36, was arrested Nov. 10 for fleeing police and felony theft after deputies tried to apprehend him for shoplifting from the Target Store in the 900 block of County Road D. The one-minute pursuit of 0.10 miles was terminated due to snow and poor road conditions at Centerville Road and Greenhaven Drive. Roseville police located the vehicle in Little Canada. After a foot chase, the suspect was taken into custody.

Following a single-vehicle accident, a Roseville woman, 22, was cited Nov. 12 in the 3400 block of Labore Road for failure to provide proof of insurance.

A license plate was reported stolen from a vehicle Nov. 12 as it was parked in the 500 block of Spring Hill Road and entered into the NCIC. A juvenile male and juvenile female were arrested Nov. 12 in the 3200 block of Highway 61 for nar-

cotics and DWI. The female was also arrested on an active warrant out of Washington County. The case has been forwarded to the Ramsey County attorney.

White Bear Township A White Bear Township man, 42, was arrested Nov. 10 in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive for third-degree criminal damage to property after a White Bear Township woman's car window was broken during an argument.

A truck, trailer and skid steer stolen from SCH Services in the 230 block of Leibel Street was recovered Nov. 12 in St. Paul using information from On-Star. A snowblower in the bed of the truck was not recovered.

A Vadnais Heights woman reported a license plate stolen Nov. 13 while her vehicle was parked at Cub Foods in the 1000 block of Meadowland Drive.

After the plate was entered into the NCIC, it was recovered by White Bear Lake police on Nov. 15, who found it attached to a stolen vehicle similar to that of the complainant.

A Roseville man, 64, was arrested Nov. 13 for DUI in Roseville following an erratic driving complaint on westbound Highway 96 at Highway 61. After failing field sobriety tests, the suspect was booked and registered a 0.19 at the law enforcement center.

Oct. 25 on Highway 36 after being pulled over for speeding 66 mph in a 55 mph zone. During the traffic stop, deputies noticed the driver's bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcohol. The driver could not perform one of the field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol content of 0.10 on the other test.

• A Warner Avenue resident on Oct. 27 reported being the victim of a Craigslist scam in which he cashed a buyer's check written for an amount greater than the agreed price and sent the buyer the difference.

• Mail theft in the 2100 block of Dorothy Avenue was reported Nov. 13.

• Officers took an internet scam report Nov. 17.

• A driver rear-ended another vehicle on Buerkle Road Nov. 12. One of the two drivers was uninsured and issued a citation.

• A hit-and-run crash was reported in the 4100 block of Hoffman Road Nov. 13.

• A 33-year-old St. Paul man was arrested Nov. 17 for stealing a car.

• Theft from a vehicle was reported in the 1800 block of Buerkle Road Nov. 13. The loss is estimated to be $185.

• Officers received a call Nov. 17 that a purse was stolen from a car broken into in the 4500 block of Centerville Road Nov. 17. Security footage has been obtained, and the investigation is ongoing.

• Suspicious activity was reported at a business in the 1800 block of Buerkle Road Nov. 12, but officers did not fi nd evidence of any theft.

• An officer took a report over the phone on a theft from a vehicle in the 1400 block of Highway 96 Nov. 12. No arrests have been made at this time.

• A 44-year-old North St. Paul woman was arrested on posession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop near the I-694 and McKnight Road intersection Nov. 12. She was booked at the Ramsey County Jail.

• A catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle in the 3700 block of White Bear Avenue sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Nov. 13. No suspect information is available.

• Officers found an abandoned stolen car bearing the license plate of another stolen car in the 1800 block of Buerkle Road Nov. 14. Both have been recovered.

• Criminal damage to a property in the 3400 block of Willow Avenue was reported Nov. 16.

A man alking away from the scene is believed to be the suspect in a burglary in Roseville the day prior. Multiple items have since been recovered.

• A 2020 white Ford F350 and a large utility trailer were stolen overnight fron the 1800 block of Buerkle Road. The trailer was full of new semi tires. The total estimated loss is $99,000. Surveillance video has been obtained.

• A catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle in the 3900 block of Linden Street Nov. 16. No

suspect information is available.

• A wallet was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 2600 block of County Road E Nov. 18. The thief attempted to use the credit card at a retailer nearby.

• Tools were stolen from a construction site Nov. 18.

• A 27-year old White Bear Lake man was arrested on 2nd degree assault Nov. 18.

• Officers responded to an armed robbery of a business in the 1800 block of County Road F Nov. 19. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers recovered an occupied stolen vehicle near Hoffman and County Road F Nov. 19. The driver, a 34-year-ol St. Paul man, was arrested for receiving stolen property.

Warm, windy temps make slow start for Minnesota deer season Keeping CWD in check

This year’s hunting season had more than a few unexpected variables, but among the most unusual was the weather conditions of the rifle season opener. Temperatures hovered in the 60s and 70s during the weekend of Nov. 7-9. Combined with high winds, hunters did not see many deer during opening weekend.

According to Minnesota DNR Big Game Program Leader Barbara Keller, the first two days of opening weekend usually have the highest harvest numbers of the season.

“Those two days were 14 percent less harvestwise compared to last year, but during that latter half of firearms deer season, we were able to make up the difference,” Keller said.

The latest data from the DNR website reports 157,126 total deer harvested this year, with a little more than half of that number being mature male deer. Special seasons are ongoing in other parts of the state, and so far are on par with last year’s harvest numbers.

Hunting during COVID-19

Although it was unclear whether safety precautions related to COVID-19 would affect the 2020 hunting season, Keller said she was unaware of any significant effects on this year’s harvest. The number of licenses purchased was about the same as last year, but Keller did notice that many hunters purchased their licenses a little earlier in advance this year. By its nature, hunting takes place in wide-open outdoor spaces, which makes social distancing a little easier to manage.

“I think it’s well suited for social distancing,” Keller said. “Some folks will travel long distances to deer camp and meet with other friends and family there. I heard a couple people wondering if that was maybe not a good idea this year. We did some messaging to encourage people to social distance.”

earlier this year. While this changed the way some Minnesota businesses were able to accept wild game, Flicker Meats in White Bear Lake did not notice a large difference.

Manager Jeremy Hosek mentioned that meat sales increased after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

“With the places being shut down, it actually made everybody scared to lose meat, so they came and bought a lot more,” Hosek said. “People were at home, they were eating more, they were buying more for the freezer so they didn’t have to leave home.”

The warm temps on opening weekend made it a little easier for the business to manage the influx of wild deer, since harvest numbers were lower on average. The risk of meat spoilage spurred hunters to do much of their own butchering during that weekend.

Flicker Meats is taking care to be as safe and sanitary as possible in its interactions with customers, offering curbside pickup for its orders.

The spread of chronic wasting disease among whitetailed deer is a top-priority problem for the DNR, which operates statewide check stations to monitor the spread of this debilitating virus. In an ordinary year, these check stations are mandatory in CWD-affected areas, but COVID-19 necessitated voluntary drop-offs for the health and safety of hunters and DNR staff.

“The sampling stations can get quite crowded during opening weekend,” Keller said. This year, stations are unstaffed. Hunters in CWD management zones, control zones or surveillance areas are urged to drop off the head of deer 1 year of age or older at these stations.

Hunters who have heads from deer harvested on opening weekend can still drop those heads off at sampling stations.

Sampling numbers were low after opening weekend, but Keller said the numbers began to pick up during the latter half of the firearm season.

“They’re still not as high as we would’ve liked,” she said.

Hunters can prepare for sample drop-off by watching a CWD sampling demonstration video and consulting other resources online at dnr.state.mn.us/cwd.

“Every test result, whether CWD is detected or not, is important because it shows us where the disease is,” Keller said. “We use this information to help us determine where we should target our management, keeping our efforts focused where the disease is most prevalent. It’s important for hunters to remember that even deer that look healthy can be positive for the disease.”

The DNR website also includes options for sampling deer that allow hunters to keep the antlers or have the deer mounted.

The self-service sampling site closest to the Northeast Metro is the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area Headquarters in Columbus. Self-service sampling is also available at Afton State Park. Several taxidermy businesses in the area, including White Bear Taxidermy, can arrange sampling by appointment if you call ahead. Visit the DNR website to see an interactive map of resources in the area where you hunt.

Full stop on in-person learning for Mahtomedi Schools

The Mahtomedi School Board at its emergency Nov. 16 meeting voted unanimously to accept the recommendation of its Regional Support Team (RST) and adopt the distance learning model for all of its buildings through at least the first half of December.

The district works with the RST, which is made up of members of the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Education and local public health officials, to keep track of COVID-19 case data and to inform its learning model decisions.

Sharply rising COVID-19 case num-

bers in Washington County and in Mahtomedi School District buildings during October has led the RST to recommend that all Mahtomedi school buildings move back into distance learning.

Mahtomedi Middle School will start distance learning 2.0 on Nov. 30. Until then, there will be no school due to scheduled holidays and teacher training days.

Wildwood and O. H. Anderson elementary schools will begin distance learning on Dec. 2. Until that date, there will be no school due to scheduled holidays and teacher training days.

All three school buildings finished out the week ending Nov. 20 in the hybrid

learning model they were using.

The decision to revert to distance learning stems from sharply rising COVID-19 transmission cases.

During the 14-day period from Oct. 18-31, the county saw 59.57 new cases per 10,000 residents. The benchmark for turning back to distance learning for all students is 50-plus cases.

Health officials were not seeing a rise in cases from prison or from long-term care facilities in new case numbers arriving during the week prior to the Nov. 16 meeting, meaning that the community spread numbers could not be attributed to those situations. The number of students and staff testing COVID-19 positive for the school year is now at 44. Students quarantined due to close contact or a positive test now number 144. Over the past two weeks, 15 students and staff have tested positive. Officials studying case trends expect a jump in cases after Thanksgiving.

No date has been suggested for returning to hybrid learning at this time, but the district will continue to work with the RST to determine future steps.

Superintendent Barb Duffrin said she would provide an update at the next regular school board meeting at 7 p.m.

White Bear Lake residents worried about the scarcity of low-income senior housing may soon be breathing a sigh of relief. Thanks to a $3.2 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, plans are in the works for a 46-unit senior apartment project.

Couple restoring old church check off wish list item

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The new owners of the former Lakeshore Players Theatre property will get their screened porch after all.

The Planning Commission felt there were alternative locations for a porch and denied a variance request from owners Steve Bucher and Kelly Clement at its October meeting. The couple need a 13-foot variance from the rear property line to build a 10-by-19-foot covered porch on the back of their home at 4820 Stewart Ave. Bucher defended the request at last week’s City Council meeting, noting there is no other shaded place besides the east side for a porch and that he is prone to skin cancer.

A resident across the alley opposed the variance during a public hearing, expressing concern that it would invade the neighbors’ personal space and lead to noise nuisances.

Community Development Director Anne Kane reminded council that if noise becomes a concern, the regular noise ordinance will be applied. “There is a way to resolve that in the future,” she said.

In her narrative to council, Kane provided a little background on the building, noting it was constructed in 1889 as the First Baptist Church. It became a theater in 1970. “The applicants are converting the former community theater lovingly into a single-family residence,” she noted.

Staff supported the Planning Commission recommendation, noting the request “goes beyond the scope to provide a second screened porch,” Kane said. “Architects included the porch on the original plans. Staff recommends an open, unenclosed stoop 5 feet into the rear yard.”

inadvertently labeled a room a sunroom, which it is not, Bucher said. “It was a staircase from the main level to the basement that is now fully enclosed. That room did not present itself as a good location because it is full sun all afternoon and early evening.”

He also feels a 5-foot protrusion toward the alley has a problem with aesthetics.

There is a concrete slab there that is not removable. It’s been there for 100 years, and 5 feet won’t cover it, Bucher explained. The porch would cover the slab, improving the appearance of the rear yard, which looks like “a disaster zone.”

The neighbor who spoke at the October public hearing, Jacqueline Ganser, 4821 Morehead Ave., said she and her husband

are opposed for several reasons. The neighborhood has relatively high density and there is little space between homes, she told the Planning Commission. She felt the porch would be invasive to their personal space and privacy, adding there is a precedent of noise issues by the former occupants, Lakeshore Players Theatre, and she worried the applicants will use the home for events and fundraising activities with an emphasis on musical performances.

Bucher maintained that a noise issue is not dependent on whether the variance for the screen porch is granted. “The space will be used for outdoor enjoyment regardless of what is constructed,” he said.

He reminded the commission that they are not a theater company and if they choose to play music, it would be the same as any other resident playing music in their home.

At least 100 curious residents have stopped by the house, the owner told council via Zoom, “all expressing gratitude for saving the building.”

Bucher said he wants an outdoor space “to enjoy the property and the neighborhood. There isn’t another place to do this.

The alley is the only place we can go. I hope the City Council sees the merits in our plan.”

Councilman Doug Biehn said he’s looked at the property and agreed with Bucher, calling the back of the building “an eyesore.”

“This addition is a great enhancement. That is reason enough to support the variance,” said the councilman. “I appreciate the fact the original character of the building is being preserved. It’s a wonderful house and addition to the neighborhood.”

Mayor Jo Emerson said she understood the need to move a porch to the east side, and considers the restoration a “wonderful project.”

“How many times have we talked about old houses torn down and a McMansion put up? These people have invested in one of the oldest, still remaining church buildings in White Bear Lake,” Emerson said. “It is being saved by these people at considerable expense, I’m sure. It’s an opportunity to keep the character of old White Bear, and this is important.”

The mayor also added that property owners immediately behind the house (across the alley) did not have a problem with the porch.

The celebration must go on, even if a bit smaller than planned. In attendance were Corinna and her husband, DuWayne, Peggy and her husband, Dave, Grace and her boyfriend, Evan Johnson, and Cole.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, when much of the world was focused on the presidential election, Morse’s family gathered to enjoy the beautiful warm day.

The family gathered outdoors at Morse’s home and enjoyed brined turkey prepared on a Kamando grill along with stuffi ng, squash, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish and — of course — pumpkin pie. As they enjoyed their meal, the warm temperatures and no bugs, many people walked by their celebration and asked, “What time is dinner?”

One thing that did not stray from tradition?

The celebratory toast. Every year, Peggy reads a poem that was written by her grandfather.

“We decided to focus on the positive and be thankful for our loved ones and current health,” Morse said.

The usual Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels program at Cretin-Derham Hall has been canceled this year. Most Meals on Wheels member programs will be delivering meals to elderly and disabled people earlier in the week to ensure that they have a meal for the holiday. However, Community Emergency Services Meals on Wheels will be open and operating on Thanksgiving Day and

Homestead is a classification of property that is occupied by an owner or relative of the owner, and is used as a primary place of residence. The State of Minnesota maintains the homestead program for residents who own and occupy their home or have a qualifying relative who occupies the home called the Homestead Market Value Exclusion.

This program has two benefits for qualifying homeowners: 1. It reduces the taxable market value of the property (for properties valued under $413,800 only), which in turn may lower taxes.

Nashville’s Fiddlin Dan tears up his bow

county fairgrounds all the way to the stage of the Grammys. It also notes that Hochhalter moved to Nashville at age 20 to enroll in college and immerse himself in the city’s music scene. Shortly after arriving, he landed a gig with Lonestar and “has performed on countless stages around the world” ever since.

It was while touring with Lonestar that he met Daniels at an Ohio music festival in 2004. Hochhalter shared the story of his “surreal” experience on his Twitter account, @fiddlinDan. “Lonestar’s bass player was friends with one of Charlie’s guitar players and they helped pull a few strings,” Hochhalter recalled. “I got word that Charlie had invited me onto his bus. He didn’t know me from Adam, but he graciously signed my fiddle and shook my hand.”

That’s when Daniels asked Hochhalter if he knew any of his songs. “Um, yeah.

All of them,” he replied. “Daniels invited me on stage to play ‘Devil’ with him.

That still blows my mind. He had never heard me play.”

Hochhalter has appeared in the Press before. In 2001 and a freshman in college, he was diagnosed with leukemia. “Everything was put on hold,” he

said. “I was fortunate to come out the other side.” His illness made the young musician realize his dream wasn’t out of reach and he moved to Nashville.

His parents, Glen and Liz Hochhalter, still live in the same house Dan grew up in near Birch Lake Elementary. His older sister, Jessica Hochhalter-Bernier, lives in Birchwood, and a younger sister, Katie, also relocated to Nashville.

He described White Bear Lake “as a great place to be from,” noting he still keeps in touch with high school friends. Jessica, director of operations for Realty Group LLC, said the family’s not surprised by her brother’s success in the music business. “He has always

Hochhalter thanked CMA and others for trusting him “with such a tall order” on his Twitter feed. Although he’s more used to “being a silhouette in the background,” the fiddler said, “playing the solo was an honor and a pretty incredible experience.”

A fiddler with White Bear roots put on a bow-shredding performance in a tribute to Charlie Daniels live at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards.

His aggressive playing was a nod to the legendary fiddler, said Dan Hochhalter, a White Bear grad who started playing violin at age 3.

Daniels, who died in July at age 83, typically shredded horsehair off his bows during his performances, especially when he played his signature “When the Devil Went Down to Georgia,” noted Hochhalter.

Country music’s biggest night opened Nov. 11 with a star-studded tribute to Daniels in a medley featuring Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, Ashley McBryde and Brothers Osborne. The fiddle player was supposed to be Jenee Fleenor, CMA’s 2019 Musician of the Year. Unfortunately for her, she had to bow out after testing positive for COVID-19 two days before the show, which was live on network television.

That’s when Hochhalter’s phone rang asking him to take her place. Would he play the fiddle solos of “Devil” alongside Aldean? In his Twitter feed, the seasoned fiddler said his first reaction was “heartbreak for Jenee, a friend and total badass,” followed by “full-on panic. I don’t normally get too nervous, but I’m not normally asked to honor the most famous fiddle player to ever live, either.”

Coincidentally, the live performance of Daniels’ “Devil” was a repeat of one he did 22 years ago in the high school talent show.

“The band was thrown together last-minute and we barely had a chance to rehearse,” he shared on Twitter.

They won the $100 prize.

“Every fiddler plays ‘When the Devil Went Down to Georgia,’” Hochhalter pointed out. “It’s the quintessential fiddle song in American popular music, period.” He admitted he hadn’t played the song in years before the phone call, so he immediately started practicing “to get the rust off my fingers.”

Hochhalter’s solo was “widely celebrated,” noted an article in the Nashville Tennessean newspaper. People on social media raved about the unnamed fiddle player after the CMA awards show, it said.

In a phone interview last week, Hochhalter was asked how it feels to be the talk of the town? “It’s been a fun couple of days,” he said from the Nashville home he shares with wife Crystal and their young daughter.

The class of 2000 grad has played with the Dierks Bentley band the last 10 years and can be heard playing fiddle and banjo on their latest release, “Riser.” His bio notes a career that has taken him from local

Mahtomedi adds five to Hall of Fame

Kristin Driscoll (2001)

Kristin Driscoll was one of the leaders on three Zephyr state-qualifying gymnastics teams including the 1999 third-place team.

She earned six individual section titles Kristin i i Driscoll i ll and placed fi fth on floor at state in 2000.

Driscoll collected four letters in track and three each in gymnastics and tennis. At Hamline, she qualified for Division 3 nationals four times, and took 10th in floor in 2004. Driscoll is an account manager for Sports Engine and has been assistant gymnastics coach under her mother, Debbie, since 2005, receiving three state assistant coach of the year awards. She was also a track assistant coach from 2006-12.

Ben Sobieski was a Parade All-American football lineman as a senior and a three-year starter for the Zephyrs. He played offensive line for University of Iowa and helped Ben Sobieski the Hawkeyes earn

Michael Greeder had a long hockey career including three seasons on the Zephyrs where he was all-conference twice. Greeder, Michael h l Greeder d who passed away in 2005, played two college seasons as a defenseman for Gustavus Adolphus and two for the Minnesota Gophers, where he was a member of their 1979 national champion team. He played professionally in three minor leagues (AHL, CHL, and IHL) and helped Toledo, Ohio, win an IHL championship. After his playing days he coached high school hockey in Toledo for 15 years, earning numerous championships and coaching awards.

Fred Harris (1998)

Fred Harris excelled at running back with over 2,600 yards rushing and over 600 receiving for the Zephyrs, earning all-conference and all-state Fred F dH Harris i honors as a junior and senior, and conference MVP as a senior. He played three seasons at Duke, starting at defensive back and special teams.

In track, Harris helped the Zephyrs capture two state championships in true-team and one in the MSHSL state meet. He was all-conference four times and ran on a state champion 4x100 team. He lettered three years in basketball and was captain in all three sports. Harris lives in Chaska. He is sales director for Legrand, and officiates high school football games.

Bears done after 34-8 loss to Champlin Park

White Bear Lake’s abbreviated 2020 football season came to an end Tuesday, Nov. 17, with a lopsided loss to the Champlin Park Rebels in Champlin.

The Rebels marched to touchdowns on their first two possessions and went on to vanquish the Bears 34-8.

With the first-round playoff exit, the Bears finished the pandemic-shortened schedule with a 2-4 record.

The Bears averted a shutout with 58 seconds left as Branden Berwald scored on a three-yard run and threw to Alex Lockwood for the points-after.

Shawn Shipman, Champlin’s 6-foot, 200-pound back, dominated the game, barging for 195 yards and two touchdowns, behind an offensive line that continuously pushed back a smaller Bears defensive front.

The Bears had drives that reached the Rebel 19 on their first possession and the 20 late in the second quarter, but could not advance farther.

Champlin’s lead increased to 34-0 on two more touchdown runs, by Shipman (four yards) in the third period and DJ Myles (29 yards) in the fourth.

The Bears season was completed during the pandemic with the exception of one scheduled game, against East Ridge, that was postponed and then canceled.

Bears coach Ryan Bartlett said that getting the season played at all — it was delayed six weeks and shortened by two — was the most important thing.

WHITE BEAR LAKE FOOTBALL John McBride, White Bear Lake tight end, will play for University of St. Thomas after two solid seasons with the Bears. St. Thomas, a Division III power in recent years now making the big jump to Division I, liked what they saw of McBride in his junior year highlight film and got a commitment from the 6-foot-6, 225-pound athlete in early August. Bear coach Ryan Bartlett called McBride a “dominating force” in the running game: “His size and strength give him a unique ability to catch and block at the TE position. Vadnais Heights council member asks for recount

Township disburses CARES Act funds

President Trump isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only one seeking a recount these days.

Incumbent Vadnais Heights City Council Member Bob Morse asked for an examination of the vote after Erik Goebel totaled up just 32 more votes than Morse in the Nov. 3 election.

Ramsey County Elections Manager David Triplett notified the city Nov. 16 that there would be a recount.

Three of the City Council candidates each gathered about 25% of the votes. Steve Rogers, who was sworn in at the Nov. 17 City Council meeting, came out ahead with 2,642 votes. He was followed by Goebel, who received 2,589, and Morse, with 2,557.

The recount began at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Ramsey County Election Office on Plato Blvd. in St. Paul. Four recount tables, one for each precinct in Vadnais Heights, were set up for the process, which was open to the public. Results of the recount were not available by press deadline. The recounted vote will be certified by the Vadnais Heights Canvassing Board on Dec. 1.

COMMUNITY BRIEF Meals on Wheels

The usual Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels program at Cretin-Derham Hall has been canceled this year. Most Meals on Wheels member programs will be delivering meals to elderly and disabled people earlier in the week to ensure that they have a meal for the holiday. However, Community Emergency Services Meals on Wheels will be open and operating on Thanksgiving Day and is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to clients. White Bear Township received $835,000 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding, equivalent to roughly $75 per person in the township. After using $630,000 for expenses related to public safety and health (enough to pay two-thirds of the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual contract with the Ramsey County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office), the township board offered grants to local businesses. Only four applied. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really expected a lot more requests,â&#x20AC;? said Town Clerk Patrick Christopherson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maybe (other businesses) received previous COVID funding.â&#x20AC;?

The township board awarded $8,765.67 to Lucyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Burgers; $2,400 to the White Bear Makerspace; $1,175 to Midwest Multisport Races; and $2,500 to NewTrax.

St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital had requested $19,700. The remaining $60-65,000 will go to the hospital. The township executive board approved the action at its Nov. 20 meeting.

$170K available for electric vehicle chargers The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) announced it is distributing $170,000 in grants to help install up to 22 dual-port electric vehicle (EV) Level 2 charging stations in public and workplace locations.

Level 2 charging stations are ideally placed in locations where EV drivers plan to park for at least 30 minutes, such as retail, restaurants, workplaces or government buildings.

A Nov. 10 press release says the grant opportunity is part of the agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initiative to "expand access to EV technology across the state" using funds from Minnesotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s share of the national Volkswagen (VW) settlement. Increased use of EVs in place of gas- or diesel-powered cars will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution in the state, noted the release.

The grant announcement coincides with an initiative between Cummins, a top local employer, and the city to facilitate installation of charging stations in downtown White Bear Lake, particularly the parking lot at Third Street and Banning Avenue.

Unofficially referred to as the parking lot project, City Council members heard about the idea last February from John Haine, regional general manager at the Buerkle Road Cummins sales and service headquarters.

While the company produces mostly diesel engines, Cummins also makes a number of other products, including an electric school bus, Haine said.

Cummins has been working with a facilitator, Great Plains Industries (GPI), to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) through the installation of public charging stations in both White Bear Lake and Shoreview.

The global company, which manufactures high-horsepower engines and power generators, was looking for a project to advance sustainability in the communities where it has facilities.

According to Haine, 20% of Americans state their next car will be electric. The GPI states that electric models are coming for nearly all auto manufacturers. Ride-sharing companies are also going electric: Lyft recently announced a commitment to 100% EVs by 2030.

City Manager Ellen Hiniker said staff will work with Main Street businesses and City Council regarding the downtown charging stations. The project is slated for 2022.

Applications for MPCA grant funds are due by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, 2021. The amount available for each dual-port station is $7,500. For more information, see pca.state.mn.us/air/ev-level-2charging-station-grants.

Caroline and Tony Yares, both vegans themselves, first gained inspiration for a plantbased restaurant during visits to Puerto Rico, where such local operations are ubiquitous. In 2019 they opened their PLNT-BSD Food Trailer, serving smoothies and bowls downtown WBL. They dreamed of someday opening a storefront, and one day, while walking, along 3rd Street they saw the old barber shop space for rent. Caroline, seeing it as a sign, decided to jump on the opportunity. “It’s my baby,” says Caroline. They opened in April of this year, just as COVID restrictions began. Right away they had to change their original business model from beautiful, tropical looking presentations to mostly packaged for take-out. Despite the challenges, business has been outstanding, and they are grateful for the support from their loyal customers and other restaurants, and the way the city has supported the downtown businesses. “We wouldn’t be here without them,” says Caroline.

The Yares’ mission is to promote a healthier diet, but they don’t consider themselves “in your face” type of people when trying to extol the virtues of plant-based eating. “If people would eat just one plant-based meal per day they could impact their health, lives, local

growers, and the planet in so many ways, Caroline says.” The great thing is you don’t have to sacrifice flavor either. You just need to learn different ways of seasoning and flavoring. This is evidenced by their many popular and flavorful menu offerings like their Paradise Bowl – a fresh pineapple shell with strawberry-banana smoothie topped with Super Foods. They recently introduced warm oat bowls. Their food is 100% plant based, clean, with no added sugar or artificial ingredients. Their goal is to by 99% organic by spring.

Tolga Ata studied hospitality management in his home country of Turkey before coming to the United States, where he continued his education in business management. In 2000, he realized his dream of opening an authentic Turkish-Mediterranean restaurant across the street from Hamline University in St. Paul.

In 2007 he met his future bride, Cigdem, a frequent customer in the restaurant, who was an MBA student at Hamline, studying nutrition and dietetics. The couple fell in love with the WBL community from their many visits here and in 2013 they opened their second Black Sea on Co. Rd. E. “In Turkey, homemade food is cultural” says Tolga. The couple is proud of their emphasis on scratch cooking and healthy Mediterranean cuisine. They make their own yogurt, which is a key component in many of their dishes.

They also are committed to sourcing product from local farmers and suppliers whenever possible. Some of their signature dishes include: unique Tzatziki sauce made with homemade yogurt, served with most dishes; Doner (beef and lamb gyro); many varieties of Kebab (they serve their kebab without a skewer to create more unique style entrees); Kofte (meatball kebab); Dolma (grape leaves

with seasoned rice); Spinach Borek; Baklava; and a variety of vegetarian dishes. The Meze platter is a popular appetizer, and their Kebab Combination platter is a big seller and very popular with families.

Like most restaurants, the early days of the pandemic were a real challenge and they had to rely heavily on their takeout trade. Fortunately, they have built up a loyal customer base in the local community and for that they are incredibly grateful. They also thank the city of WBL for the way they have supported small businesses during these times.
