Pianist returns for chamber music concert series

A rewarding performance in his hometown three years ago left composer/pianist Michael Djupstrom eager for an encore. That day has come, thanks to a grant from the S&R Foundation in Washington, D.C. The foundation, which supports emerging artists in various disciplines, granted Djupstrom's request to found a chamber music series in White Bear Lake.

Willow Lane Elementary’s ‘Minnow Tank’ project meets the sharks of White Bear Lake

The fourth graders of Willow Lane Elementary School in White Bear Lake are taking the premise of reality show “Shark Tank” and making it bite-sized.

Willow Lane reading teacher Leigh Anderson and her students are preparing to pitch a charity of their choice to five “sharks” in the hope that a $2,000 donation will be awarded to their winning charity.

Anderson decided to start the Minnow Tank project with her fourth graders after getting inspiration from Willow Lane’s partnership with Donatelli’s Italian restaurant in White Bear Lake.

Every year the fifth graders from Willow Lane have an opportunity to gain some real-world experience building resumes, practicing interviews and working side by side with the staff at Donatelli’s restaurant. The tips collected from the night go to Hopekids, an organization that works

with children and their families who are affected with life-threatening illnesses.

Anderson wanted to provide a similar charitable, leadership-based project with the fourth graders where they could conduct research on a cause they care about under the mentorship of adults from the community. They would then pitch the existing charity to a group of donors, who will serve as the judges, or “sharks.”

Anderson aims to raise a total of $2,000, donated by the

community, which will be awarded to the group with the best pitch and donated to the students’ charity of choice.

The Minnow Tank’s pilot began in 2018 and various iterations of the project followed in 2019 and 2020, but 2021 is the first year Anderson has officially had the project down pat with her fourth graders.

Willow Lane Elementary is particularly unique because of its diverse student population.

The White Bear Lake Elf Hunt is back for its second year. On Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., families are invited to come downtown in search of toy elves, which will be hidden in 30 local businesses.

The rules will be the same as last year.

Participants need to bring a writing utensil and their “North Pole Elf Hunt Passport,” which can be printed off from downtown White Bear Lake’s website (https://www. downtownwhitebearlake. com) or picked up at participating businesses.

On the day of the Elf Hunt, participants will have the entire day to search for the elves and write the names of each elf on their passport.

Santa is even scheduled to make an appearance.

Once the elves are found, participants will turn in their passports to Manitou Grill or Washington Square.

Thirty winners will be selected to win a prize from participating businesses.

The only difference this year is that the first 300 participants to turn in their passport will win an official 2021 Elf Hunt button.

The event was originally designed due to COVID-19 to get folks out into the community around the holidays as local businesses started to open up again.

“We knew some people had cabin fever, and doing something fun like this gave an enormous positive response,” said Danielle Rode, the owner of Upsy Daisy, who serves as events committee chair for downtown White Bear Lake.

Rode hopes the Elf Hunt will become an annual tradition to celebrate the holidays and support local businesses.

Holiday lights contest returns

am so excited that we are once again doing our holiday lights contest. Press Publications launched the contest in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. Now in 2021, and going into 2022, the pandemic is very much still here and people still need a bit of light in their lives.

I have absolutely loved looking through all of the entries as they have come in during our nomination phase, which ended last week. Each one is unique in its own way and has a story behind it.

Growing up, one of my family’s favorite Christmas traditions was driving to look at a light display near our home. Every year, we would hop in the car, drive to the display, tune in our radio to a specific station and watch on in amazement as the display lit up perfectly animated and timed to the songs we heard on the radio.

This year, my family and I have already participated in lots of Christmas traditions, including putting up decorations, looking Out and at lights, baking sweets, mailing Christmas cards and visiting About Santa.

For the first time this year, I Shannon am also trying out perhaps a new Granholm tradition. Every day of December leading up to Christmas, my dogs get to try out a new treat from their “Merry Corgmas” calendar. Recently my family and I also visited a drive-thru holiday lights show that was a lot of fun Press Publications is now gearing up for the voting period of the Holiday Lights Contest, which will run Dec. 16 through Dec. 31. From now until then, community members are encouraged to hop in the car and travel to the different displays in the north metro to see them in real life, as photos often don’t do the displays justice.

We hope that our holiday lights contest might be a part of your family’s holiday tradition this year. Hopefully this lights contest gives you something to look forward to. Thank you to everyone who entered, and don’t forget to vote.

Over 400 votes were cast for last year’s contest, and we are hoping to break that record this year.

The top three winners will receive prizes and earn bragging rights. Winners will be announced in January.

Holiday tragedy Dec. 18 will mark the sixth anniversary of my father’s passing. Every year that date rolls around, it is an especially hard day for my family and me. I miss everything about him—his jokes, his laugh, his voice, his advice, his songs. Every Christmas that we celebrate without him, I can’t help but feel that void deep in my soul.

Every year when we put our Christmas tree up in the living room, dad always had his own little section of the tree where all of his best dad, sports and coffee ornaments hung as well as his (empty) ostomy bag (one of his many jokes). Perhaps his favorite ornament was a bear that sung a Christmas tune. He would play it over and over again to drive us crazy.

To this day, all of his ornaments are still placed on his spot on the tree. And that ornament that once seemed to annoy us so much, brings us peace. Now that I have my own home, I have carried on the tradition with a spot of our tree just for him.

Although the holiday season is often a joyous one for many, please remember that the holidays are really hard for some, especially in 2021.

There is a lot to be thankful for: the lawyers are at work

just finished reading a 16 page “terms of use and privacy policy” by a major Internet company. It was fascinating.

Why did I read this? I’m not sure. Each time you deal with a company like WhattsApp, Facebook, airlines, insurance companies or Bird Food of the Month Club, there is this box to check that says you “read and accept” whatever they say. So I read this document as I thought I was maybe doing the Movers & right thing to make sure I was Shakers understanding Norm Barnhart and agreeing to what I said I was agreeing to.

Even though I did not fully understand it.

One thing I’m thankful for is that these internet companies respect my privacy and are willing to share with me what exactly that they will and will

not share. I am also thankful that they so concisely summed it up - and in only 16 pages.

Another thing to be thankful for is that I don’t have to spend days and months writing terms and use policies for a company that does business on the internet, as it would literally drive me nuts. And unlike, how some people use the word literally, I literally mean literally.

Among the many things for us all to be thankful for is that you or I don’t have to be a lawyer who researches, writes, types, collates and staples these 16 page user agreements.

It is also something to be thankful for that we do not have to be the other lawyers that review what the fi rst batch of lawyers have written to make sure the 16 pages of concise user agreement is indeed accurate, up-to-date, legally binding and yet still allows plenty of room for wiggle room if the company needs to get out of it.

I’m also thankful that I do not live in the future - when I assume that these legally

binding documents that we sign are going to be 20 and 30 pages.

So I’m counting my blessings this year that I don’t live in the future when these documents will be almost unreadable.

Finally, I’m very, very thankful this holiday season for the many blessings that I have such as family, friends, food and shelter.

It’s these basics in life that we only really need. However, it is nice to know that somewhere each weekend there is a lawyer working overtime, pouring over pages and pages of user agreements to make sure every jot and title is in the right place so that we the consumers can rest in our snugly bed knowing that our phones and computers are guarded with the utmost of security, safety and privacy.

For these gifts we are about to receive, we thank you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Praise for recent story The Press, with its publication in the Dec. 8 issue of the article on Native American burial mounds, underscores for me several truths: 1) The work of the White Bear Historical Society, and the leadership of Sara Markoe Hanson, are underseeing attributes of this community.

2) The diligent preservation of newspapers and community news from defunct and still-published news sources, has allowed this article to be fully documented.

3) By printing this article, Press Publications widens its influence on its readers. Event news and local activities and pictures allow us to meet residents’ interests while widening their perceptions about what a community newspaper is, what it does and what it can be.

4) Racism, using historical information, can be documented and made into tools to address racism today.

Council member doesn't decide for students Greg Urban’s report at the end of the Vadnais Heights City Council meeting on Dec. 7 was irresponsible and ridiculous. For those who missed it, Urban called for a city ordinance prohibiting any mask requirements within the city limits of Vadnais Heights. When the city attorney mentioned that this would include health care facilities (including surgical centers and The

Urgency Room), Urban still wanted to look into it. He mentions how terrible he feels for children wearing masks in school and that many people on social media are upset.

Let’s break this down a bit.

Urban is not parenting in a pandemic and has no place to speak on behalf of what he thinks is best for kids or parents when it comes to safety in schools. He doesn’t know the stress of wanting our kids to be happy and also wanting them to be safe.

As for the masks, I have four children in school and wearing a mask hasn’t been a problem for them. Do they love it? Probably not, but they do it and they don’t complain.

They seem to understand the risks better than some of our council members.

This whole thing is classic Greg Urban. A careless idea meant to manufacture fake outrage and make himself look like a hero. What’s even more baffling is that he doesn’t seem to understand his own job. He doesn’t have this kind of jurisdiction over schools. Frankly, he is unfit for leadership. The good news for Vadnais Heights is that he is up for reelection in 2022 and we all have a chance to vote him and his like-minded council members out of office.

Letter showed new angle of argument Mr. Vincent’s letter to the editor in the Dec. 8 edition of the White Bear Press is perhaps the most revealing of all the anti-bus letters.

As I followed the news stories and the community’s response, it seemed the anti-bus folks oscillated

between arguing that too many people coming in would change the character of our community and arguing the bus line would not have enough ridership (or, wink-wink, serving as a rallying point for an off-year election — congrats, Mayorelect Louismet and Council Member-elect Hughes). There didn’t seem to be a coherent theme until Mr. Vincent’s letter.

Mr. Vincent’s candid letter presents a new angle by generalizing the potential of unspecified “crime” on a bus trip in Minneapolis/ St. Paul to all bus rides, and suggesting that only poor folks benefit from mass transit. I think Ms. Reinhardt’s article did well to appeal to reason and justify the process of the development of the Purple Line, and I trust that process to continue to address concerns about ridership and traffic congestion.

So instead of reiterating those justifications, I’m calling out a dog whistle.

Response to Purple Line editorial Dear Commissioner Reinhardt: I read your editorial about the Purple Line in the Vadnais Heights Press. You made some excellent points. However, in your praise of the benefits of mass transit, you never mentioned your personal experience using it. Have you used Metro Transit recently? Or ever? You state: “Research shows that the presence of a transit station does not increase crime."

What research are you referring to? FYI: Buses do

not "bring crime." Buses transport people, and some of those people commit crimes on the bus and at transit stations.

Your article, which minimizes the impact of crime in mass transit, is contrary to my personal experience. I have used the A-Line, the Green Line, the Blue Line, and bus service along Rice Street to access work, shopping, sporting events, car shows, the State Capitol and the State Fair.

This is my experience with existing mass transit: • All the transit stations and platforms along the various routes are filthy.

• The light rail trains and buses on certain routes are uncomfortable and filthy with trash and human body fluids.

• The transit station heat lamps, lighting and elevators are often non-functional due to recurring vandalism.

• Men openly urinate, thereby exposing themselves on the light rail platforms and at bus stops.

• Would-be thieves demand money and otherwise harass customers waiting for the next train or bus.

• Theft, assault and other crimes are so rampant around the transit stations that nearby businesses in downtown St. Paul relocated to the suburbs.

In short, criminals congregate at transit stations, and crime is rampant in much of the mass transit system. Cleanliness and safety is a major concern when riding the Metro transit system. How will Purple Line transit stations be any different?

There was and will continue to be a shortage of workers. How will the Purple Line be staffed with drivers?

How will Ramsey County afford the ongoing maintenance for the Purple Line when it is unable to clean and maintain existing trains, buses and transit stations?

I repeat: Have you used Metro Transit recently? Or ever?

Give to help the war on Cancer In 1971 the war on cancer was started. Some thought in 10 years the cancer war would be over, they were wrong. Since the early 1970’s the death rate from cancer is down more than 25%. Between 1975 and 2016, the 5 year survival rate is up by 36%. The number of anticancer drug therapies has expanded more than tenfold, helping with survival rates.

Screening early for cancer has improved some survival rates to as high as 99%.

Cancer remains the #1 killer of Hispanic and Asian Americans. The lifetime risk for men is 1 in 2, for women it is 1 in 3. Most of us know somebody affected by cancer.

The risk for cancer is possible at all ages, but primarily is a disease of aging that is more complicated than ever.

Salvation Army announces match for donations Anonymous donors have donated $1 million in matching funds to challenge the Twin Cities community in support of the Salvation Army. Any donation made to the Salvation Army now through Dec. 31 will have it's impact doubled as a result of this match.

The Salvation Army reports that the holiday giving season generates 60% of its annual revenue, which assists people in need all year round. In the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, The Sal-

vation Army Northern Division assisted 735,000 people, an increase of 136% from 2019. The social services organization distributed more than 5.2 million meals in 2021, and provided 222,500 nights of safe shelter. The Salvation Army also anticipates a significant spike in requests for rent and utility assistance in the weeks to come.

Eastbound lanes will be closed the nights of Dec. 20 and Dec. 21; westbound lanes will be closed the nights of Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. Single-lane closures will begin at 9 p.m.

Detour routes will be posted during the closures. Westbound traffic will be directed north on CSAH 15,

west on CSAH 12, and south on CSAH 17 back to Highway 36. Eastbound traffic will be directed south on CSAH 17, east on CSAH 14, and north on CSAH 15.

Bethel community mourns loss of George K. Brushaber Bethel University announced the death of President Emeritus George K. Brushaber on Dec. 13. Dr. Brushaber, a resident of North Oaks, led Bethel University from 1982 to 2008. He died at the age of 82 following a brief illness.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF'S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights • A resident in the 900 block of County Road D reported being robbed of a MacBook Air Nov. 22 following a FaceBook Marketplace transaction during which the "buyer" suddenly grabbed the item and ran out of the house with it, entered a silver vehicle and fled eastbound on County Road E. • Jimmy's Food and Drink in the 1100 block of County Road E on Nov. 23 reported receiving a counterfeit $100 bill for payment.

The person tendering the bill was cooperative with Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies, stating the bill was received from the bank ATM the day before.

• A Stillwater woman reported a purse stolen from the front passenger seat of her vehicle during the early afternoon of Nov. 23 while it was parked in the Vadnais Heights Walmart employee parking area in the 800

block of County Road E. The rear passenger window was smashed in for access. While deputies were taking her report, she received an alert of declined use attempt at the Walmart.

• A New Brighton man reported a drop hitch and rock tamers stolen Nov. 24 from a parked vehicle while he was at the parts counter inside a business in the 1400 block of County Road E. • A Maplewood man, 35, was arrested at 1:40 a.m.

Nov. 26 in the 4200 block of Bridgewood Terrace for domestic assault. The report has been forwarded to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

• Loss prevention personnel at the Vadnais Heights Walmart chronicled their week's work. On Nov. 26, they reported a pair of females for stealing two carts of merchandise and loading them into two vehicles before fleeing.

A Keep Our Kops Safe (KOPS) alert was issued on the vehicle that had a functioning license plate. The other vehicle had a temporary tag.

On Nov. 27, a St. Paul woman, 29, was cited for misdemeanor theft and trespassed from the store. On Nov. 28, squads responded to two more theft reports. A West St. Paul woman, 38, was cited Nov. 28 for misdemeanor theft and trespassed after loss prevention personnel observed her underscanning items and passing all points of sale.

On Dec. 2, loss prevention employees stopped an uncooperative female and recovered some, but not all, of the items she stole before fleeing the store.

A KOPS alert was issued on her vehicle. A Vadnais Heights woman, 31, and a Minneapolis man, 30, were cited for shoplifting Dec. 2 at the store after they were observed not scanning all their items at the self-checkout.

They were described as cooperative. A White Bear Lake woman, 22, was arrested and issued a trespass notice Dec. 3 for theft after she was seen passing all points of sale with unpaid merchandise.

A Vadnais Heights man, 41, was arrested Dec. 4

at the Walmart for gross misdemeanor driving on a license canceled due to unsafe behavior; his passenger, a Minneapolis man, 40, was arrested for misdemeanor theft after the latter was detained for shoplifting.

• A St. Paul woman reported bags of items purchased at Burlington Coat Factory stolen from an uncovered truck bed Nov. 26 while she was inside the Vadnais Heights Walmart shopping.

• A Shoreview woman reported her purse stolen from the back seat of her vehicle Nov. 27,after she left the driver’s door open to arrange items in the front seat after shopping at the Walmart. She realized the purse had been stolen when she couldn't start the car because the key fob was in the purse.

• Jewelry, cash and a spare vehicle key were reported stolen Nov. 27 from the 100 block of Star Circle after the home was entered through an unlocked window.

• A motor vehicle was reported stolen at 5:45 a.m. Nov. 28 from the 1200

block of County Road D after its owner heard it start up and drive out of the parking lot. After the vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center database, St. Paul police recovered it at 8:45 a.m. with the radio removed.

• The Speedway store in the 1000 block of County Road E reported a Dec. 1 shoplifter who was also in the store shoplifting the previous day.

• The Target store in the 900 block of County Road E on Dec. 2 reported cell phones stolen from the store. After the suspect was identified, a KOPS alert was issued. The suspect has been involved in multiple crimes from various Target stores.

• A St. Paul woman, 36, was cited Dec. 2 at the Speedway station in the 1000 block of County Road E for shoplifting after she was seen on video concealing items in her purse. She was issued a trespass notice and released.

White Bear Lake woman convicted of possession of methamphetamine Nicole Marie Williams, 39, of White Bear Lake has been convicted of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree. According to the criminal complaint, on April 8, 2019, a Minnesota State Patrol officer conducted a random plate check on a dark grey Pontiac Vibe and discovered the vehicle was stolen. The vehicle was stopped on northbound I-494 near the city of Oakdale. Both the male driver and female passenger, who was later identified as Willams, were taken into custody.

The officer conducted a search of

the stolen vehicle, which appeared to be painted a dark grey instead of the vehicle’s listed red. The correct ignition keys were found inside the vehicle. The officers searched a purse and makeup bag located where Williams had been sitting and found several hypodermic needles, one used and unused glass pipe, and two small white bags containing a white crystal substance consistent with that of methamphetamine. Williams admitted the purse and makeup bag belonged to her. She was sentenced to five years in prison and $10,000 for a first controlled substance conviction.

MINNOW TANKS: 4th graders learn leadership while raising funds for charities FROM PAGE 1A

According to Anderson, 70% of students at Willow Lane are students of color.

Anderson wanted to give these students a chance to feel empowered while looking for an opportunity to close the achievement gap that students of color face.

“We want to empower kids, not enable them.

And if we’re truly going to break that cycle, we need to show them that their presence in the world matters,” says Anderson.

Anderson hopes to instill the idea that her students could make a difference in their community, so she began to show her students examples of kids just like them who have chosen to donate to charities in their own community.

“I soon found that when we started the project, the kids didn’t understand what charities were. I took that as a sign to practice our research skills.”

The fourth graders were assigned to go home to their families and have a discussion about their personal values. When the students reported back the next day, several themes began to emerge.

The students valued causes like animals, veterans, childhood diseases, cancer, climate change, eliminating hunger, and keeping the ocean clean. From there, Anderson matched the kids with

charities that fit their interests.

This year, the fourth graders selected 11 charities: White Bear Lake Food Shelf, Environmental Protection Agency, Hopekids, Ocean Conservancy, The Jane Goodall Institute, Masonic Cancer Center of Minnesota, White Bear Lake Humane Society, Muscular Dystrophy, Wounded Warriors, Coco’s Heart Dog Rescue, and Pacer, a children’s mental health resource.

After the fourth graders selected their charities, they were paired with coaches provided by the White Bear Rotary to guide the students in their research and help them with their final presentations.

Jackie Reis of the White Bear Lake Rotary, a service organization, became connected with the Minnow Tank project after the club made a goal to recommit to its diversity, equity and inclusion goals following the murder of George Floyd in June 2020.

Rotary set a goal to understand how systemic racism affects the White Bear community. Given given the percentage of students of color at Willow Lane, Rotary members wanted to reach out and see how they could break some of the cycles that affect students of color by mentoring students through the Minnow Tank project.

“It’s got to be so mutually beneficial, because the students and adults are both learning from each other,” said Reis. “The students can see the adults care about them, and the adults see what today’s young people are like.”

The coaches began working with students Nov. 29, and will see their assigned group a total of six times for half an hour each Monday and Tuesday until Dec. 14. The students will present to the sharks on Dec. 20.

But the Minnow Tank project doesn’t end there.

Anderson’s vision is to have members of Rotary continue to mentor the students of Willow Lane over the span of three years.

Rotary coaches will be paired up with a group of third graders and stay with that group until fifth grade, mentoring them along the way as the kids learn more about charities and acts of service.

“I think, hopefully, we’ll watch them mature as they learn more about giving back and gratitude and service. The Rotary is all about service,” said Reis.

And while the fourth graders work toward that goal of gratitude and service, they’ll get a chance to face off with the sharks of White Bear Lake for the coveted $2,000 donation.

SPECIAL TOWNBUDGET MEETING REVIEW - Residents in attendance of White Bear Township’s Special Town Budget Meeting on December 7th approved a final 2022 property tax levy of $4,904,391.00.

The levy is a 15.45% increase over the 2021 tax levy. The typical home in the Township saw market values increase about 1.9% which when added

to the property tax levy results in a property tax increase between $5.66 and $12.33 per month for homes valued at $200,000 and $400,000 respectively. Residents also recommended to the Town Board a 2022-operating budget for the Township of $5,198,146, which is a 6.99% increase over the 2021-operating budget. The main reason for the levy and budget increases are road and park improvements and current and future equipment replacements. Plastic shipping envelopes, bubble wrap and air pillows - Along with plastic bags, these items are considered “plastic film” & can be taken to a drop-off location for recycling. Make sure plastic film is clean & dry. Remove labels & deflate air pillows. Do not put plastic film in curbside recycling.

Packing peanuts - Some local postal service providers may accept packing peanuts. Contact a specific location for more information. You can also list packing peanuts for free or for sale on BoxGiver.

Styrofoam - Styrofoam is a brand name for a type of polystyrene. All polystyrene products should be put in the trash. Do not put them in curbside recycling.

Other examples of polystyrene include plastic containers with a number “6” on them, plastic utensils, & most molded plastic packaging (like the kind used to package toys).

"I've long been passionate about performing and composing chamber music, so I was excited to explore the idea of developing a classical chamber music program in White Bear Lake, something that has never before existed, to the best of my knowledge," Djupstrom said by telephone from his Philadelphia home.

The audience's receptivity after that earlier concert especially impressed Djupstrom, who played his own compositions as part of the program. "I realized from speaking with people afterwards that the majority had approached each piece with an open mind, having few preconceptions or prejudices regarding the different styles of music we presented," he recalled. "It

Our programming had honestly been pretty unusual for a classical concert. Encouraged by that reaction, I decided White Bear Lake would be an ideal place to program new and unfamiliar pieces, as well as more established works."

One of the most original aspects of the new series will be its highlighting of Romanian music, Djupstrom said. "Despite having a strong compositional tradition, almost no Romanian classical music is known outside of the country, and sheet music and recordings are very difficult to obtain even today," he explained, adding that his interest in the country and its music runs deep.

Djupstrom has visited Romania five times since 2015 searching for compositions in the libraries and second-hand stores of Bucharest.

He is even working to master the language to better communicate in that quest. "I decided I could open more doors if I spoke the language," he said.

Djupstrom is especially fascinated — bordering on obsession, he admitted — with the late Romanian composer George Enescu. The first and last piece in next week's concert are works by the composer, a child prodigy regarded as one of Romania's greatest musicians.

The program for the first concert series includes the following: George Enescu: Ballade Dumitru Bughici: Suite in Romanian Style, op. 1 Gra yna Bacewicz: Witra (Stained Glass Window) Josef Suk: Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, op. 17 Michael Djupstrom: L utar (Fiddler) George Enescu: Violin Sonata no. 3, op. 25, "in Romanian folk style" The timing works well for Djupstrom, a ’98 White Bear Lake grad, who plans to stay in town to spend the holidays with his parents, Bob and Ann Djupstrom. He'll be back for the second concert in the series planned for February 2022.

The the pianist will be accompanied by flutist Xuan Li and saxophonist Jonathan Wintringham.

Rock collector hooked on agates Retired 3M engineer Jim Hunt loves rocks, especially agates. His fondness for the gemstones became more than a hobby recently after his son convinced him to open an Etsy shop.

"Creation of the shop came from my desire to spread the joy of viewing agates to more people," explained Hunt, who rekindled a boyhood obsession to collect agates two years ago.

What the Mahtomedi rock collector enjoys most about the uniquely patterned stone is not knowing whether it will be a "treasure" or a "driveway rock" when split in two. Finding wild agates is a matter of luck, Hunt said. "It's much like fishing versus catching. You can go hunting for them, but finding them is another problem."

The beaches along Lake Superior have long been popular destinations for agate hunters.

Hunt is among them but hasn't had found much success of late.

COVID brought people out in droves to agate hot spots on the lake, he said.

Agates can be found around the world. They form in pockets of volcanic rock, Hunt explained. Superior's north shore consists of volcanic rock called gabbro, which explains why agates are found there. Reddish

volcanic rock called rhyolite is also a source of agates found in the Upper Peninsula. Lake Superior agates are usually too dense for jewelry, so Hunt prefers stones from Brazil, Africa and parts of Mexico. He buys agates from a wholesaler in South Dakota that sells the rocks by the pound. How often does Hunt hit a treasure among them? "Better than a third of the time," he replied.

His children convinced Hunt to share the beauty of agates on Etsy after he started giving them away as gifts. Son Luke and daughter-in-law Mallory constructed the website, which went live last month. "We'll split any profit," Hunt said. "It's a joint venture."

Fellow White Bear Lake Rotarian Pam Tschida also invited Hunt to display his jewelry in her salon, Shear Reflections, in Avalon Mall. The necklaces are sold at a third location, MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids. Prices range from $50 to $75.

The pandemic is partly to blame for re-igniting Hunt's lifelong love for rocks. He used downtime at his and wife Deb Lauer's cabin in northern Minnesota to hone his agate hobby. It's also when he bought a rock saw to cut the thin slices

remember where it was."

Daniel W. “Dan” Crowley

Passed away peacefully Dec. 4, 2021 at age 87. He met new acquaintances with a charm that was never forced, trying to talk the language of that person after asking the question, “Where are you from?” He would toss out a joke to strike up some laughter.

Good health, activity, music and study created happiness and were imperative. The amalgamation of all this made him whole. He enjoyed handball in the 1960s at the Midway YMCA , loved basketball and softball, which he played most of his life. He loved to run, ran in the St. Patrick’s Day race for 20 years and caused others to run with enthusiasm. This was a yearly event that ignited passion for family running, lasting for two generations. Golf was a lifelong passion. Was a golf coach at Mariner High School in White Bear Lake where he taught German and some literature as well.

A member of Indian Hills for 30 years. His portfolio holds seven “hole-in-ones” and was ranked senior club champion at Keller Golf Course a couple of times. Born in Edina, Minnesota, the family moved to St. Paul where he graduated from Cretin High School and St. Thomas College. Served in the US Army in Germany. Was enamored by the culture there, its people, and was caught up in its beauty. It was there that he struck up conversations in pubs and became a fledgling with their language. After receiving his masters at St. Thomas he began a career as German teacher in White Bear Lake. He loved literature and poetry, music and singing, playing guitar and piano.

Learned many folk songs from his mother’s native land of Ireland. In later years he was a baritone, singing with the Silver Harmony Singers and the Giving Voice Chorus. He continued to play piano all of his life. Many friendships were maintained with the people he knew in Germany, visiting there often throughout his lifetime. He and his wife both retired from teaching to attend Northwestern College of Chiropractic and opened their own office in North St. Paul together. He leaves behind the love of his life and a “hat trick” of three children and eight grandchildren; one grandchild and one great grandchild deceased. A celebration of life will be held later.

Memorials are preferred to Giving Voice Initiative.

Richard M. Parenteau of White Bear Lake passed away Dec. 7, 2021 at age 87 after long battle with dementia.

William (Bill) Olson, Sr. Age, 88 of Vadnais Heights Beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away surrounded by his family on Nov. 25, 2021.

Preceded in death by parents Harold Sr. & Elvira, siblings: Wallace, Rich, Phyllis Starkey, Mary Lou Ahlstrom, Harold, Jim, and Gary.

Bill joined the US Navy at 17 and served for 4 years.

Shortly after returning home, he met and married the love of his life in 1957. After attending tool and die school, he found employment learning the trade. In 1968, he decided to venture out on his own, starting his own business, State Tool Inc. He was proud to have successfully run State Tool for over 50 years.

If you knew Bill, you knew his zest for life. His one-liners are fondly repeated among his family and friends. He traveled the world with his family by his side. He spent his evenings either driving around in his red Corvette with Jean by his side or at the kitchen table playing games with his family.

There are a special few that knew him not as Bill, but as Pops. His grandchildren were gifted with the side of this man that could make you feel special, even among a sea of 19 grandchildren. Whether it be the countless hours he spent at hockey games, dance recitals, graduations, etc. or the special treats he had in never-ending supply – he was the invincible man they each treasured beyond words.

It has been said that Bill, or Pops, was a legend who created a legacy. His absence here will be deeply felt.

Yet it is his joy for life, his dedication to what mattered, his hard-working focus, his life-changing faith, and his unconditional love that will live on in the people who were blessed to know him.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 4741 Bald Eagle Blvd., with a visitation an hour prior. Interment to follow at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery.

Richard Leland “Dick” Johnson Richard Leland “Dick” Johnson of White Bear Lake, Minnesota Born on March 23, 1936; died on Nov. 29, 2021. Preceded in death by parents, C. Ray and Vi Johnson; and son, Eric Johnson. Survived by wife, Virginia, of 61 years; son, Stuart (Kay); granddaughter, Alyssa; grandsons, Kelsey (Julie), and Spencer Johnson; great granddaughter, Quinn. Dick was born in Morris, Minnesota but grew up in Brookings, South Dakota. He graduated from South Dakota State University with an engineering degree and moved to White Bear Lake in 1958.

He enlisted in the Army in 1960 and worked for the Defense Division of Sperry Corporation for 40 years.

Beverly M. Rowe (Petree) On November 29, 2021 Beverly Margaret Rowe (Petree), age 86 of Spring Hill, Florida entered into eternal life peacefully at home with her family.

Her husband, Larry G. Rowe entered into eternal life on September 17, 2014.

Beverly, who preferred to be called Bev, was born on July 2, 1935 in Salem, South Dakota and spent her childhood in Montrose, South Dakota. She went on to become a nurse. In June of 1959, she married Larry G. Rowe from Watertown, South Dakota and together they raised their family in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

She worked as a nurse in various medical offices throughout the St. Paul, Minnesota area for over four decades. She was well loved by those she worked with and by her patients. She was known for her extraordinary kindness.

As a mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she was extraordinary as well. She was everyone’s best friend, confidant, and she always put others before herself. Her humility and love shined in everything she did. She lived her Catholic faith well in how she loved and cared for others.

She had the most incredible and beautiful soul. She loved people deeply. Three words describe her life: love, care and nurture.

Bev is survived by three children - her daughter Lori Dethlefs (Rowe) and her husband Mike, and their two sons Christian and Nick; by her son Doug Rowe and his three children Nathan, Christopher and Madison and his wife Dollie, and her three children Trexie, Therese and Franz; and by her son David Rowe.

She is also survived by her six sisters Joye Weber, Karen Tennyson, Mary Lou Cross, Marlyce Bernards, Diann Wuebben and Patty Wagner.

Due to the winter season, her Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday weekend on July 1, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Montrose, South Dakota. There will be a mass at 10:30 a.m. followed by a light lunch. Her family will then place her to rest at 4 p.m. the same day at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, South Dakota.

Marjorie Hall Kelly Marjorie Hall Kelly, 96, of Mahtomedi died peacefully Dec. 6, 2021. An amazing woman and caring mother, she found joy in everything she did. Marge was preceded in death by former husband, Raymond Donald Kelly, with whom she raised four children in White Bear Lake: Kevin (Lila), Lynn (Kent Hirozawa), Brian (Renee Rivers) and Scott. Her survivors include grandchildren Sara Kelly, Colin Kelly, Nora Hirozawa, Miles Hirozawa and Jessica Kelly-Paul. Great-grandchildren are Madeline and Eleanor Rassel.

Her life began in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts as a student-athlete and valedictorian of her High School class. Marge studied at the University of Massachusetts and graduated from the University of Missouri, School of Journalism. She began her career as an advertising copywriter and met her husband in Washington, DC while working as an intelligence analyst before moving to Minnesota. In addition to her work as a homemaker she worked in real estate, financial services, substitute teaching and retired in 1994 from Human Services with the State of Minnesota.

She remained active in civic affairs into her retirement and volunteered at Marketfest, the White Bear Lake & Mahtomedi Senior Centers, AARP and Triad. She was a local chapter president of AARP and Toastmistresses and a member of the White Bear Lake Historical Society. After moving to Mahtomedi, she enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her lake front condo and on her pontoon boat. She traveled extensively covering nearly all 50 states.

Her final years have been at Encore Memory Care in Mahtomedi and the family is grateful for the loving care of the staff there and from hospice.

Visitation will be Monday, December 27 from 5-7 p.m. at Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 East County Road E, White Bear Lake and for an hour prior to a Funeral Mass Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Of The Lake, 700 Mahtomedi Ave, Mahtomedi. Lorraine M. Peltier

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our beloved mother, Lorraine Mary Peltier. Lorraine was born Sept. 22, 1924, and died Nov. 28, 2021, at the age of 97. She was the first-born child of Joseph and Cecilia (Keiffer) Tessier.

She grew up in a large family on a beautiful farm high on a hill, surrounded by an apple grove, pond, large vegetable gardens and livestock in Gem Lake, on what is now called Tessier Road. As a young girl, she learned to ride on large plow horses and gained the necessary skills to help run a working farm, including daily weeding of the gardens, canning and preserving food, and enjoying a cold glass of home-brewed root beer. Produce was sold at Hoffman’s Corner and the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market, carried in by wagon.

At a young age, Lorraine met the love of her life, Archie Peltier, from Centerville, Minnesota. They married before Archie left to serve in the Army during World War Two, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. When he returned to his young wife and toddler son, Archie, they settled into a house on Miller and Fourth St., walking distance to St. Mary’s Church and School. This was very important to her when deciding where to live. In her later years, Archie and Lorraine enjoyed trips to the North Shore, antique shopping and taking drives through the countryside.

They especially loved time together decorating for holidays inside and out, once making the front page of the White Bear Press. Lorraine developed beautiful rose and perennial gardens, which were enjoyed by passersby and friends alike. She continued to live in this home until her mid-eighties.

For over sixty years, Lorraine volunteered at the church and school in many capacities: a teacher’s aide for Jan Fredericks, countless hours for school and church fund-raisers, serving communion and working on funerals, plus much more. Her natural creativity contributed in countless ways. She remained passion-

She will be deeply missed.

Angus Meat owner celebrates retirement After 57 years at Angus Meat in Maplewood, Rick Atzmiller is passing on his family-owned store to his son, Eric. Atzmiller began working at Angus Meat in 1963 when he was 10 years old. He worked alongside his grandfather, Bill Sommerfeldt, who taught him everything he knows about being a butcher.

The fourth-generation operation has survived throughout the years because of its willingness to keep up with technology and new business practices. “We’re a local store, and we give people the best service (we) possibly can. Good customer service is hard to find, but we’re here to give good prices and service,” he said. As for what’s next for Angus Meat, Atzmiller says he is just happy to see his

grandfather’s legacy continue.

Home values down but city taxes go up

MAHTOMEDI — There is good news and bad news for Mahtomedi residents this budget season, depending on how people look at it.

The median market value home in Mahtomedi has decreased from $362,700 in 2021 to $352,900 for 2022, according to the city assessor.

No one can explain exactly why home values trended downward over the past year, but Mahtomedi City Council members at the Dec. 7 meeting suggested that a lack of home sales during the ongoing pandemic may have prevented meaningful comparisons. Sales of comparable homes in an area are the basis for setting home market values.

Nevertheless, a 2.7% increase in market value has been assumed, so that median-valued home worth $352,900 will pay $1,356.87 in city taxes in 2022, an increase of $20.88, or 1.6%, over 2021.

During his annual Truth in Taxation presentation, Finance Director Scott Schaefer announced a proposed general fund budget for 2022 of $6,910,842, $119,227 higher than in 2021 — an increase of 1.76%.

The city’s $6.9 million budget includes a debt service levy of $1.7 million. The debt service, or the interest and principal paid on debt the city takes on, decreased 7.9% over 2021.

Mahtomedi residents should also expect utility rates for water, sewer and storm sewer to increase in 2022. These increases are needed to support capital improvements and repairs required in the systems, Schaefer said. Revenue increases are expected to be 4% in the water fund, 3% in the sewer fund and 4% in the stormwater fund. The city’s 2022-2026 capital improvement plan (CIP) has $18 million in planned improvements, and the five-year parks CIP has $898,000 in planned improvements, he said.

Increases in the city's budget for 2022 are due primarily to a $122,076 increase for ambulance service, a $48,374 increase for the fire department to fund a full-time firefighter/medic and a $19,441 increase in the city building budget for increases in necessary cleaning services because of the pandemic.

The public was offered an opportunity to comment during the public hearing portion of the budget hearing, but no one did.

In late December, the finance director will submit the final levy to the county and prepare the final budget document.

More financial news and other highlights from the meeting: • Homeowners will pay increased ambulance transport rates, city equipment rental rates, utility rates and assessment rates, after council approved an ordinance adopting its annual fee schedul, pursuant to Minnesota statute. Council also approved the publication of a summary ordinance, for the 2022 city fee schedule to lighten the reading load in the city's official newspaper.

• The city's engineering firm, WSB, updated the city on its Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP) and opened a public hearing to respond to questions as part of the city's annual responsibilities in order to retain its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit.

• Properties abutting CSAH 12 (Wildwood Road) should keep an eye out for possible assessments for the city's participation in road reconstruction performed by Washington County during the summer of 2022. Council directed city staff to prepare a feasibility report for a possible total assessment of around $200,000. Road work will begin at Century Avenue and end at Veterans Memorial Park.

• DeWitt Homes’s request for a zoning code text amendment that would have allowed pervious paving materials in the homes it planned to build in Mahtomedi was denied by council by a vote of 2-2-1. In denying such a request, council members in opposition must state their reasons for doing so in the public record. Council Member Jeff Charlesworth said he voted “nay” because of Department of Natural Resources language about pervious pavers, concern about future owners and ambiguity about the administration of maintenance plans.

Council Member Jane Schneeweis said she voted against the amendment to be consistent with the city's intentions of fostering sustainability. “It's hard for me to backpedal on this when it's been such a strong and important issue for me. We get so many requests from residents for exceptions, and we've been told we're not always consistent,” she said. Council Member Jeff Ledermann abstained from voting.

• The city's engineering rates will increase by an average of 4% after council approved the 2022 rate schedule with the city's engineering firm, WSB. • Even though the city is currently experiencing a drought, Edith Pond will be ready to handle floodwaters following the installation of a stormwater lift station. When

high water arrives, the lift station will have been paid for, after council approved construction pay voucher No. 1 for $175,551.12 to Meyer Contracting Inc. Council also approved change order No. 1 for the same project for $8,924.72 to Meyer Contracting.

The extra work was associated with a modification to the lift station, removal of a cottonwood tree and an additional pump.

• The city approved two resolutions to restrict parking on CSAH 12 due to construction. Parking will be restricted from Century Avenue to Mahtomedi Avenue and on Maple and Locust Streets between Mahtomedi Avenue and Warner Avenue for to the 2022 street improvement project.

• Council approved an agreement with Northeast Youth and Family Services for 2022 in which the city will contribute $16,565 — a 3% increase from 2021.

• Council passed three resolutions moving money around within its various funds.

The action complies with the council’s 2011 resolution that commits any excess fund balance to the street improvement fund. The amount of this year's transfer is $555,019.

• Council passed a resolution accepting $28,740 from the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund established under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). A total of $877,646 has been allocated to Mahtomedi from ARPA. • The city will pay approximately $38,875 to CliftonLarsenAllen for 2021 audit services.

• This year, the public will once again be able to use the outdoor ice rinks at 55 Briarwood Avenue, after council approved the cooperative services agreement with the Mahtomedi Youth Hockey Association, Yard Works and Mahtomedi School District 832. As in the past, the city will contribute $12,000 to the school district so all Mahtomedi residents may use the rinks. Funds for this service come from the Parks Department budget.

• The Glenmar Diversion Project is now complete with the city's approval of the final payment of $12,764.22 to Miller Excavating.

• Council thanked Ledermann for his dedicated service to the city and presented him with a plaque. Ledermann was elected to the Mahtomedi City Council in 2017 and served for four years. He served as council president in 2020 and as liaison for the Environmental Commission during his entire tenure as council member. Ledermann thanked city staff and council members for their support and Mahtomedi residents for

the honor and opportunity to serve them.

Ledermann has been a champion for the environment, Schneeweis said. Council Member Richard Brainerd said he was impressed by Ledermann's due diligence, especially in the area of sustainability.

• Council thanked Charlesworth for his dedicated service to the city. Charlesworth was appointed to council on Feb. 16, 2021, to complete the term of Steve Wolgamot, who resigned. While on council, Charlesworth also served as liaison for the Park Commission. Charlesworth said it had been an honor to serve the community and that he has great appreciation for the rest of the City Council and for the mayor. City staff members were fantastic, he said. Brainerd acknowledged that Charlesworth willingly stepped forward to fill the vacancy left by Wolgamot. Schneeweis described Charlesworth as a calm council member who listens to all.

• Mahtomedi gave notice that the city is fully on board with environmentally sustainable practices, after council approved a sustainability plan. The plan declares a long-term vision toward maintaining a sustainable future in the city and planet by taking actions that are ecologically sound, economically viable and socially just and humane. Sustainability includes practices such as buckthorn removal and safe routes to school. At a joint work session with the Environmental Commission Nov. 16, the commission and council discussed the plan recommended by the commission.

• Council approved an agreement through September 2022 with the state to establish terms and conditions under which energy assistance payments will be provided from the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). Congress created an emergency water assistance program in response to the pandemic in which funds can be used to pay for past due and current water and wastewater usage charges of up to $1,200 on behalf of eligible residents.

Because of a lack of agenda items and the diligent pursuit of business items at the Dec. 7 meeting — as well as the arrival of the holidays — council canceled the Dec. 21 regular meeting. The council next meets at 7 p.m.

Leverty is new Bears volleyball coach

Mackenzie Leverty, whose volleyball resume includes playing for a collegiate national champion and coaching at several levels, is the new head coach for White Bear Lake.

Leverty, assistant to Mike Alexander for four years, got the job last week as Alexander stepped down.

“Coach Leverty brings a tremendous amount of coaching experience to WBLAHS, but more importantly, her coaching philosophy aligns with the school community,” said Brian Peloquin, activities director, in a press release.

Leverty, an all-state player in high school at Hutchinson, was a middle hitter for

University of St. Thomas and helped them capture the Division III national title in 2012 with a 40-1 record.

She has coached club teams and Junior Olympics, and

was an assistant at Hamline University one season in addition to assisting at the high school level.

“I enjoy instructing and coaching players to reach their highest potential, while playing the sport for which we share a love,” said Leverty.

Matt St. Martin, assistant activities director, said, “She will be an incredible asset to our coaching staff and school community as a whole.”

Alexander was coach for five years.

“It was time to focus on my family,” said Alexander. “I did everything I had set out to do with the program and felt really good with my long time assistant Mackenzie Leverty applying and in the end receiving the job.”

Ex-Bear snags 14 TD passes for Augsburg Dominic Smith, junior from White Bear Lake, had an outstanding college football season for Augsburg University and was named to the All-MIAC and All-Region 6 teams. Working with quarterback Cade Sheehan of Rochester, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver led the MIAC with 14 touchdowns.

Smith ranked second with 69 catches and third with 1,000 yards.

His 14 touchdown receptions are tied for eighth-most among all NCAA Division III players nationally, while he ranks in the top 30 nationally in receptions per-game (23rd), receiving yardage per-game (21st) and total receiving yards (28th).

He was a second-team pick for all-region, which includes five conferences. Augsburg was

Asked about the benefits of biking with her club, she listed several.

“Rides can be short, hilly and fast for a great workout, or can be a social leisure ride or a longer ride for endurance. The workout is addicting for me. I enjoy the beautiful outdoors and seeing nature on every ride. The camaraderie with the club is what keeps most of us coming back, sharing our passion, riding.”

Johnson rides a Trek Madone road bike, predominantly. She also has a Specialized Dolce Comp road bike with a wider tire and more tread for rougher terrain, along with two hybrid bikes and a mountain bike.

The TCBC’s record for mileage was set by a man in 2012 with 18,504. The top three women’s totals were 10,873 in 1998, 10,072 in 2015, and now Johnson’s total of 9,062.

Linda Johnson missed out on school sports, as Title IX came a bit too late for her, but she has enthusiastically embraced physical activity throughout her 66 years.

In the last decade, that’s mainly been bicycle riding. And she was recently honored by her bicycle club for logging 9,062 miles in a calendar year.

“I have always biked, but never more than leisurely,” said the White Bear Lake resident. “Since joining the club, I have gradually been increasing the mileage I ride each year.”

Johnson joined Twin Cities Bicycling Club in 2010 to take advantage of its many organized, recreational group rides. It has about 2,000 members.

Her mileage total between Nov. 1, 2000, and Oct. 31 was the third-highest total for a woman in the history of the club. She was the club’s first female since 1998 to log more miles than any of the men. Her feat was recognized at the club’s annual business and awards banquet, held last month.

“I have always liked physical activity.

Unfortunately, Title IX did not become law until I was out of high school,” said Johnson, who also enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and long hikes between seasons.

Solo biking is not for her. “I personally am more motivated riding with other people,” she said. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, club rides were limited to three or fewer participants from November through April, but after that the club went back to biking in large groups.

There’s one group whose company on the road she especially enjoys.

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — Saying they couldn’t hold off any longer, the Vadnais Heights City Council will increase the tax levy for 2022.

The council lowered the 2021 tax increase by 5.41% because of hardships created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many residents actually paid more property taxes in 2020 than they did this year.

The levy increase for 2022 will be 12.2%. Based on a single-family home with a median value of about $322,000, taxpayers would pay an ad-

ditional $10.28 per month in property taxes if the value of the house has increased by approximately 4%.

Much of the budget for 2022, which was approved Dec. 7, includes capital improvement projects and expenditures that have been deferred for years. The largest expenditure – $750,000 –is earmarked for the purchase of a new fire engine; money for this capital expenditure would come from the city’s general fund, and will not be assessed to taxpayers.

After much discussion, the council also signed off on landscaping proposed for the At-Home Apartment project on McMenemy Street. Any changes to the plan will now be handled by city employees.

Carlson Clinic collects donations for Time on the Water CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

Dustin Carlson and his team at The Carlson Clinic are raising funds until Dec. 31 for Time on the Water, a St. Paulbased nonprofit that provides fishing trips for veterans, police, teachers, firefighters and health care workers.

So far, $6,600 has been raised through the clinic's $10 adjustment program, which attracted more 350 patients, and its $20 “first visits,” where new patients have a chance to meet the chiropractic team.

Over the last 18 years, Carlson has selected four charities each year to support, and he’s capping off 2021 with a final donation to Time on the Water, thanks to a personal connection with his friend of 43 years, Ryan Street.

Street served in Afghanistan and Iraq in the Marine Corps after college. Carlson was inspired to support veterans after Street introduced him to Time on the Water’s mission.

“I’ve heard stories of vets who

might be struggling with PTSD who were taken on a fishing trip to Canada, and they come back a changed person. Everyone’s got different needs, and they don’t know where to turn or ask. We want to help out those military people with more than a check,” explained Carlson.

Time on the Water’s founder, Chris Hansen, shares the same mentality of wanting to do more for veterans than just sending a check to the Veterans Administration.

In April 2012, Hansen experienced a traumatic brain injury from a rollerblading accident that left him in and out of a coma for 30 days. Hansen attended weeks of rehab, where he relearned how to walk and use his left hand.

“Life after the accident was hard,” said Hansen. “I had PTSD from the accident and shut down pretty good. I kept working the whole time, but I was kind of losing myself a little bit.”

In 2013 and 2014, Hansen started going on fishing trips in

Canada to ease his mind from the stress of his recovery. He remembers calling his wife while he was there and telling her that he was feeling a shift in his mindset.

Hansen realized there were veterans and first responders who also experience PTSD who could use the clarity he found while on his fishing trips.

“One of the nurses who helped me after my accident was a Gulf

War medic. He kept me safe while I was in a coma, and I wanted to thank this guy,” said Hansen As a kid, when Hansen was feeling overwhelmed he remembered thinking to himself, “I need time on the water.”

Time on the Water takes 30 to 40 people every year on trips, which are all funded by individuals and local businesses that believe in the nonprofit's mission.

Carlson was inspired by Time on the Water’s unique approach to helping veterans like his friend, and wanted to do the same for other veterans in his community.

“We love to make a difference in the community and be a leader as a small business. It's something we get excited about, and seeing the patients smile, it’s so rewarding.”
