A few weeks ago, Press Publications received a letter from a bus driver in School District 624.

The letter, from Daniel Giossi, was about his experience as a bus driver for White Bear Lake Area Schools.

The letter read, “Over the years I’ve had many kids on the bus. Some, of course, more introverted than others. With the very limited time I have, I try to be friendly, learn names and work to get them out of their shell.�

Giossi’s letter went on to describe a kindergartner this year who was filled with confidence, smiled and called him by name. Giossi loved seeing his kids on the bus, but with so many who are now studying from home, it’s been harder for him to check in with them, provide support or interact with both the kids and parents in the community.

He hopes the kindergartner he knows won’t crawl back into her shell.

Among many of the worries that parents are facing amid the pandemic are concerns that their children will regress in their education and social skills. There’s also the worry of how different industries and employees, including school bus drivers, are handling the sudden shift to at-home learning. The bus drivers who transport Centennial and White Bear Lake Area school students are doing their best to stay positive. “Last spring COVID-19 hit, and our spring

Launched in 2018 by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, the fund issues annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing “compassionate,

needle-moving work� to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families.

Kauffman is executive director of the White Bear Lake nonprofit. She called the grant “transformational� in a Dec. 9 press release, adding that “Solid Ground is excited and so grateful to the Day 1 Families Fund for its generous support.�

Holiday lights contest

am so excited about our holiday lights contest. If there was ever a year that people needed a bit of light in their lives, it is 2020.

I have absolutely loved looking through all of the entries as they have come. Each one is unique in its own way and has a story behind it. Even the entry with one string of lights brought a smile to my face. The caption reads, “Took hours of planning. Weeks of waiting for the display to come.

30 seconds to set up. Perfect.”

Growing up, one of my family’s favorite Christmas traditions was driving to look at a light display near our home.

Every year, we would hop in the car, drive to the display, tune in our radio to a specific station and watch on in amazement as the display lit up perfectly Out & animated and timed to the songs we heard on the radio.

About We hope that our holiday Shannon lights contest might be a part of your family’s holiday tradition Granholm this year. Many of the things we have all looked forward to thi year h this have b been canceled or postponed. So hopefully, this lights contest gives you something to look forward to.

Sometime before Dec. 31, I plan to drive around with my husband and dogs to check out all of the entries in person, because I’m sure pictures do not do them justice. Thank you to everyone who entered, and don’t forget to vote.

Dec. 18, 2015 Dec. 18 will mark the fifth anniversary of my father’s passing. Every year that date rolls around, it is an especially hard day for my family and me.

I cannot believe it has been five years. For some reason, I think it will be just a bit harder this year.

I miss everything about his—his jokes, his laugh, his voice, his advice, his songs. Every Christmas that we celebrate without him, I can’t help but feel that void deep in my soul.

One way we have kept his memory alive around Christmas is our tree. My father spent a lot of time in his recliner by the tree. Every year when we put our Christmas tree up in the living room, dad always had his own little section of the tree where all of his best dad, sports and coffee ornaments hung as well as his (empty) ostomy bag (one of his many jokes). Perhaps his favorite ornament was a bear that sung a Christmas tune. He would play it over and over again to drive us crazy.

To this day, all of his ornaments are still placed on his spot on the tree. And that ornament that once seemed to annoy us so much, brings us peace.

We keep hoping one day it will magically start playing. Now that I have my own home, I have carried on the tradition with a spot of our tree just for him.

House nightmare The only thing I’m looking forward to about Dec. 18 is the fact that that is the day that the restoration of our home is supposed to begin. On Oct. 23, my husband and I woke up at 5 a.m. to find our entire kitchen flooded. The dishwasher supply line under our sink, which was only a year and a half old, ruptured. The water seeped into our floors through the ceilings, light fixtures, walls, insulation and floors in our finished basement.

Needless to say, our basement is far from finished now.

It took 31 days of going back and forth and the waiting game until our contractor and insurance company were able to reach an agreement on how much the project would cost. I’m praying the worst part of this process is behind us, and look forward to the days when we have a kitchen floor again.

Setting a new precedent

hile the word “unprecedented” is used less often these days, the pandemic continues to set askew any pattern of normality. In White Bear Lake Area Schools, we are seeking to turn challenges into opportunities to set a new, better precedent.

We began the school year with a way of learning new to all of us.

Families chose for their students a hybrid model experience, with students going to school two days a week and having Movers & at-home learning the other days, Shakers or full distance learning Wayne A. delivered online.

Kazmierczak More recently, all of our students K-12 transitioned to full distance learning. While details have been ironed out as guidance and circumstances change, I am proud of the flexibility and resilience that have been shown as we are living and learning lessons that will help all of us to be nimble and find community when facing challenges.

The pandemic has provided opportunities to engage innovatively. Our teachers and students are finding new ways to maintain classroom connections.

The way this looks for each teacher is different, but examples include musical sketches, shared

on-screen activities and new apps used for creative learning.

Guardians are getting into the mix too by attending virtual conferences.

The Community Services Department has begun offering more virtual classes and opportunities for lifelong learners of all ages from birth to senior program. School board, committee and neighborhood meetings have begun taking place virtually, allowing presentations to be heard and questions to be asked remotely.

While this isn’t our usual way of getting together, it has been rewarding to interact in new ways with residents who haven’t interacted with us as readily in the past.

We are gathering feedback differently with the use of a new crowdsourcing platform that allows for virtual interactions.

Participants provide thoughts, review and provide feedback on others’ ideas and see a snapshot of the conversation. The voices of students, families and staff members were invaluable as we began the year, and they remain an important part of the district’s processes with additional community conversations taking place.

When feedback revealed that our families needed additional support, the district added initiatives to help foster physical and mental well-being. The free Bear Care Health and Wellness Clinic, located at North Campus, offers students of all ages access

to preventative and acute care health services. A Mental Wellness Support Line was soon added and provides families with connections to resources for children ages birth-21.

The district has always connected students and families with essential services, but it has become even more important.

The website’s new support hub provides families with important resources and access to information for essential services including crisis response, basic needs, mental health and well-being, physical health, social emotional learning and more. The “one stop shop” for anybody looking for support moves away from a siloed approach.

In the midst of moving parts and discovering new ways to do things, we continue to be committed to providing a highquality education for all of our students in whatever situation we find ourselves in. The coursework may be delivered differently, but our students’ experiences will remain robust and engaging.

The life lessons we are all learning today, those of innovation and adaptability, will be remembered long after these challenging days are behind us and we’ve set a new, better precedent.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No demand for Rush Line I am writing in support of those who are not in favor of the Rush Line creating a major stop in the middle of downtown White Bear Lake.

Years ago, I took the 265C bus every day to St. Paul during rush time hours.

At that time, they had a bus stop at Kowalski’s. When the bus came from downtown White Bear Lake and picked me up in the morning, there were never more than two people on the bus.

When the bus dropped me off after work, there were no more than two other people being dropped off to get into downtown White Bear Lake after the Kowalski’s stop. Due to the lack of ridership demand and cost cuts, it was deemed not feasible to keep a stop up in White Bear Lake and we had to catch the 265C at the Maplewood Mall or the Hwy 61 Park and Ride.

Since then, other transportation options are now available, such as Uber, if you need to get around the area.

However, now we find out the need for a major stop in the middle of downtown White Bear Lake where a bus will stop every 15 minutes throughout the day and every 10 minutes during rush hour. There is no demand for this bus stop in downtown White Bear Lake! If it is needed, have it stop at Kowalski’s and then head down Highway 61 for its White Bear Lake stop.

I appreciate the Press printing letters from local residents on this matter, and hope our local leaders listened to local residents instead of surveys created by the Met Council. If the bus stop goes in downtown White Bear Lake, I feel it will change the unique feel of that stretch of downtown that gives White Bear Lake that small-town feeling.

Thanks for EV story Debra Neutkens — Thank you for your story in the Nov. 25 White Bear Press supporting plans to install electrical charging stations in White Bear Lake. This is a very forward-thinking plan, considering where personal transportation technology is headed.

I am one of the new owners of an EV here in White Bear Lake, and plan to utilize these new charging stations in the years ahead, as will more and more of our community residents. Just as gasoline automobiles replaced the horse and buggy 120 years ago, electric vehicles (EVs) will eventually replace petroleum-based vehicles in the next few decades. The continued rise of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere from fossil fuel burning is requiring this change in technology development. Just as wind turbines and solar panels will continue to replace coal-fired power

plants, electric vehicles now appear to be the next best option for addressing carbon emissions from the transportation sector.

We need to build for the future, not cling to the past. Petroleum has had a tremendous, beneficial impact on human transportation the world over during the past century. But our great-grandparents never imagined the consequences of massive petroleum (and coal) use in the world. We now know those consequences, and it is our responsibility to move these technologies to the next paradigm. The future is clear. We must move toward renewable, sustainable energy systems. It will be exciting to watch this transition in the years ahead.

Barely missed This is for “Barry.” We almost collided on Saturday, Dec. 5, in downtown White Bear Lake. I was watching as I crossed the intersection on my mobility scooter. You were turning left from Fourth Street onto Hwy 61, going north. I saw you, and you saw me. We were both reminded of something that day. You were reminded to watch more closely for pedestrians. I was reminded to be aware of blind spots people have while driving. There is sun and other obstructions that may cause someone to not see me. You found me on my way to shopping in downtown. You were shaking. You truly were sorry for almost not seeing me. But you didn't hit me, and we both went on our way.

I am so grateful for you finding me and apologizing. That meant a lot to me. Many drivers just keep on going, knowing full well they cut me off. You are a gentleman, sir. May you and your family have a safe and joyous holiday season. We'll both be watching closer this year. Thank you for stopping.

Remote votes should count I am very dismayed with the Township Board of Supervisors and the town attorney for their disenfranchisement of my fellow residents at the budget meeting that took place Dec. 8. The town attorney interprets a state statute which says “residents may vote at a town meeting” to mean that a resident must be physically present to vote. This very strict interpretation of the word “at” resulted in remote attendees not being allowed to vote or make a motion on our town’s annual budget of $18 million.

The Town Board decided at its executive meeting on Nov. 20 to accept this explanation. However, it was not com-

municated to the residents that if they chose to remain safe and not attend an in-person meeting, they could call in. It was also not made clear that the Town Board and attorney were taking this frankly ridiculous stance, limiting attendance to 18 people, and not permitting remote votes.

Instead, the entire statute was cited via the Town’s Facebook page as a reason why people couldn’t vote remotely.

What it failed to account for was the fact that the governor and Association of Townships both endorsed remote attendance and voting and the association even posted a how-to guide.

The entire meeting should have been remote to begin with in order to effectively stop the spread of COVID-19.

Instead, the Town held the meeting inside Heritage Hall, a facility shared with Gem Lake and the Ramsey County Sheriff. More than 31,000 cases have been reported in our county alone, and nearly 550 people have died. Why would the Town Board decide to hold an in-person meeting and not allow remote voting?

I am very disappointed with my Town Board and the town attorney. They actively stifled the direct participation they speak so highly of, and which is the foundation of the Township form of government.

Walking the dog Now that we are largely over the recent nightmare of this election, I would like to address a similar issue.

Lately, when walking my dog I can’t help but notice someone is slinging dog crap onto the walking path. As if we haven’t had enough of this lately.

I assume some are those who never walk their dogs regularly and therefore aren’t used to them taking a dump on the trails. They may not understand that they need to clean up afterward.

You know, “Never-Dumpers.”

Then there are those who walk the trails specifically to ensure that their dogs do take a dump and then forget to pick it up, the “Pro-Dumpers.”

There may even be some out-of-town folks who just don’t care, the “Not My Residence” group.

It would seem as though these groups are so different that it would be next to impossible for them to have common goals.

Then there are those of us “Congregates” who are stuck in the middle, living with all the crap you guys won’t deal with.

Let us now work together by making a bit more of an effort for your fellow man, the environment and universal path care by picking up after our own dogs and thereby creating a more

Not off the hook I would like to thank and acknowledge Stephanie Greene for her thoughtful response to my previous letter regarding how angry I can get when I see people not wearing masks in public.

The tone of your letter was very helpful, Stephanie. I think most people, myself included, recognize some folks can’t wear a mask and sympathize with that concern. But — and I offer this in all humility — I don’t think that gets you off the hook, Stephanie. Health directives for folks in your predicament are clear: Wear a face shield. You owe this to your neighbors. The risk with this virus is just too great. Since I wrote that letter, I have learned of four others with the virus, one who is in the hospital fighting for her very life. And I think you must admit, too many people don’t wear masks simply because they just don’t want to. They exhibit an “in-yourface” attitude about it, refusing even to follow social distancing guidelines. Am I right?

If my tone came off as hateful, Stephanie, as you seem to infer, I offer a humble apology to you and others.

But please do not conflate my anger with hatred. Reckless behavior is simply not acceptable, and sometimes anger is the natural, and even correct, response. For my part, I will make an effort to watch my attitude and not become self-righteous. I agree. there is way too much of that right now and I am sorry for contributing to it. Again, I thank you for your gentle corrective tone; I much appreciate and respect you for it and, as I said, I will keep your comments in mind when I am about my business.

Dellwood man receives Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award

Like father, like son.

Jim Kirvida’s father, Mitch, was drawn to the skies as he spent his formative years in North Dakota.

“He was mechanically inclined and a brilliant engineer,” said Jim. “He installed the passion of aviation (in me).”

The passion is still there to this day as Jim Kirvida last month received one of the highest awards the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bestows — the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.

The award is named after Orville and Wilbur Wright, inventors of the first modern airplane. It honors those who have exhibited 50 years of professionalism, skill and aviation expertise.

“It’s been a lifelong dream to fly,” Kirvida explained. “I never expected to receive this award. I was dumbfounded.

“To be associated with an award that has the Wright Brothers name, it’s very humbling.”

Kirvida, a Dellwood resident and owner of Custom Fire Apparatus in Osceola, Wisconsin, was notified he won the award last month in a small

ceremony at the New Richmond, Wisconsin airport, where he stores his planes.

Yet that wasn’t the original plan. Award recipients are usually given the award in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. When COVID-19 nixed that plan, the next idea was the Oshkosh Air Show, held during the summer.

COVID washed those plans as well, leaving Plan C. Kirvida ida The eligibility guidelines Jim Kir to receive the Master Pilot Award include holding a U.S. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certificate; 50 or more years of civil and military flying experience; and being a U.S. citizen.

The recipient also must have three letters of recommendation. Kirvida said one came from Mark Baker, president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

“He’s definitely an inspiration,” Kirvida continued. “I’ve taken numerous trips with him. I’m

honored to be in his presence.”

Kirvida joined the Navy in 1966 with the assignment of maintaining Naval aircraft. On those weekends, thanks to his dad, he took flying lessons.

“He inspired my love of flying,” Jim said. “I was bitten by the same bug. He was able to see his son do what he loved to do.”

He earned his pilot certificate in 1972 and he was off.

“I still love it,” he said, after all these years despite the yearly certifications and the increase of temporary flight restrictions which, he explained, were hardly around 15 or 20 years ago. “It makes you feel so young, jumping into an airplane.”

“People fly into their 80’s,” he continued, noting that a 100-year-old did a solo flight recently. “If I still have my health, I don’t intend to stop.”

One of the surprising things in all of this is Kirvida isn’t a commercial pilot, meaning he’s never been compensated all these years. His flights have been personal, or for sales/service calls for his business.

While there has always been a part of him that wishes he were a commercial pilot, commercial pilots have told him that they wish they had his life.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

• A White Bear Lake juvenile was arrested Nov. 29 on I-694 and Highway 61 for DWI. The case has been sent to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

• A hot theft from auto was reported at 8:10 a.m. Dec. 2 in the 1000 block of County Road D after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies caught the incident in progress. The suspect vehicle eluded deputies with a quick U-turn on the freeway. A Keep Our Police Safe (KOPS) alert was issued after the license plate of the vehicle was observed. The thief managed to break a window of the victim's vehicle and steal an icemaker before being caught in the act.

• A resident in the 200 block of Primrose Court on Dec. 1 reported losing several thousand dollars to the "grandson involved in an accident and is in the hospital, and by the way, is also in jail and needs bail money" phone scam.

• A St. Paul woman, 26, was cited Dec. 2 in the 3000 block of Rice Street for speeding, driving after suspension, failure to provide proof of insurance and displaying expired tabs. The vehicle was towed, and the driver was released at the scene.

• A resident in the 3100 block of Edgerton Street on Dec. 1 reported more than $1,000 in charges made to his debit card while it was still in his possession. The complainant will be reimbursed by his bank, and the case is under investigation.

• A lockbox containing a key fob was reported stolen Dec. 3 from a dealership vehicle belonging to Buerkle Hyundai in the 3300 block of Highway 61 after the front driver’s side window was broken in.

Vadnais Heights

• A St. Paul woman, 36, was cited Dec. 1 on County Road E and Talmage Circle for causing a three-vehicle accident by failing to yield. The crash resulted in injuries to a Shoreview woman. The St. Paul woman was also cited for driving after cancellation and failure to provide proof of insurance.

White Bear Township • A Minneapolis woman, 24, was arrested at 4:59 a.m.

Nov. 29 in the 1100 block of County Road J for DWI, possessing stolen property and identity theft, after deputies were dispatched out on a call for a driving

complaint and suspicious activity. The case has been referred to the county attorney for charges.

• A New Brighton woman, 29, was arrested Dec. 1 in the 2600 block of Arbor Drive for domestic assault by strangulation. The case has been referred to the county attorney for consideration of charges.

• A resident in the 5200 block of Bald Eagle Avenue reported criminal damage to her property overnight Dec. 1-2, after unknown persons threw two small rocks through a glass window and screen door.

• A resident in the 5300 block of Northwest Avenue reported a rock thrown through a living room window Dec. 2.

• A resident in the 1800 block of Stillwater Street reported a vehicle stolen from his driveway overnight Dec. 3-4 after he may have left a spare key inside. Minnesota State Patrol located the vehicle the next day in Columbia Heights.

• A Minneapolis woman reported the front passenger window of her vehicle broken in Dec. 5 while it was parked in the lot at Tamarack Nature Center in the 5200 block of Otter Lake Road. Items stolen from inside include a purse containing credit cards that were then used at the Vadnais Heights Target and Walgreens.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Dellwood • A driver was arrested Nov. 17 on Dellwood Road N. and Ideal Avenue for DWI after Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a complaint of an impaired driver.

Grant • A resident in the 9000 block of Ideal Avenue N. on Nov. 16 reported receiving by mail a Target Red Card in her maiden name that she did not apply for.

Target officials said they received the card application using her name, Social Security number and date of birth, but the phone number and address did not match her information.

• A motorist was cited Nov. 17 on southbound Manning Avenue N. and Liberty Avenue for speeding 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. After deputies turned around on the driver, he slowed down and later admitted to not paying attention to his speed.

• A motorist was cited Nov. 17 on eastbound 75th Street N. and Kimbro Avenue N. for speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone by westbound deputies on patrol.

The next day, eastbound deputies on patrol cited a motorist for speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. Later that day deputies cited a motorist on westbound 75th Street N. and Lake Elmo Avenue N. for speeding 74 mph in a 55 mph zone as he passed another vehicle. The driver said he got “a little zealous passing that car.” On Nov. 21, stationary deputies cited a westbound motorist in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. for speeding 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. When deputies got within 100 yards of the driver, he slammed on the brakes. He told deputies he was late for an appointment, and, anyway, he was only going 65 mph.

Deputies checked their radar and found it in good working order.

Mahtomedi • A motorist was cited Nov. 15 on Mahtomedi Avenue and Locust Street for speeding.

• A motor vehicle was reported stolen

Nov. 15 from a parking lot in the 3000 block of Century Avenue N. while the complainant was eating dinner.

• A catalytic converter was reported removed from a vehicle parked on Mahtomedi Avenue Nov. 16.

• A Zoom meeting participant on Shamrock Drive reported indecent exposure by a hacker during a Nov. 18 meeting.

The case is under investigation.

• A Jesse James Lane resident reported that at 1:29 a.m. Nov. 19, someone driving an SUV arrived hurriedly and got out to look inside his vehicle. The person then broke the driver's side rear window and end up taking nothing before speeding away.

• A motorist was cited Nov. 19 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue for failure to provide proof of insurance after being pulled over for expired tabs. He was verbally warned about the tabs and expired driver's license.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited Nov. 20 in the 700 block of eastbound Stillwater Road for failure to stop at the stop sign on Warner Avenue N. Deputies

observed the “wheels stay in constant motion throughout the intersection.”

Pine Springs • Deputies issued citations to two motorists Nov. 19 on westbound Highway 36 at Hilton Trail N. for speeding.

• A Minnesota driver was cited at 12:34 a.m. Nov. 20 on westbound Highway 36 at the ramp to southbound I-694 for driving after revocation after deputies on stationary patrol clocked him on radar speeding 67 mph in a 55 mph zone and conducted a traffic stop. The driver said he was unaware his license was revoked.

Willernie • A suspicious police vehicle with blinking emergency lights reported at 1:36 a.m. Nov. 21 on Wildwood Road and Paddington Road turned out to be a tow truck driver in the process of towing a vehicle. Deputies advised the complainant that tow trucks also display blinking lights.

Richard “Dick” Joseph Arcand Sr.

Richard “Dick” Joseph Arcand Sr., 99, of White Bear Lake, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2020. Preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (nee Hoffman); daughter, Barbara; son, Larry; and grandsons, Andrew and Guy. Survived by children, Richard Jr. (Shirley), Anyrine (Kevin Morris) Claassen, Mari Sievers, Carole (Neil Langer), Patrick (Jane), and Barry (Nikki); 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

Dick and Shirley owned Hoffman’s Market in Gem Lake. Even though he had young children, Dick enlisted in the Army and was a WWII veteran. He was a long time member of the Saint Mary of the Lake Cleaning Crew. He enjoyed many things such as dancing, especially the old time dances like polka and waltz; skiing, being well known as the skiing grandpa at Trollhaugen; and most importantly he enjoyed his time with the coffee crew at McDonalds, where he was known as the chairman and regulated conversation where all was allowed except politics and religion. He loved God and his family and will be remembered as a wonderful dad, grandpa, and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Private family mass and interment at Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church. Celebration of life to be announced and held at a later date. No flowers preferred.

John William Bobeck

John William Bobeck was born on June 13,1931. He passed while in the hospital suffering from COVID-19 on November 26, 2020. He is preceded in death by his wife Toshie Okutomi and his granddaughter Rebecca.

John leaves behind 2 daughters, Jean (Robert) McKeague, Jo Ann (Brian) Nelson, grandsons,John (Tiffany) Baranuk, Matthew (Alison) Baranuk, Daniel (Kris) McKeague, Jacob McKeague, Zachary McKeague and granddaughter Gabrielle, great grandchildren, Jack, Karly and Joe, nieces and nephews.

John had an adventurous life of which we heard many stories. He worked from lumber mills in Oregon to plantations in Georgia when he was just a boy.

He married Toshie Okutomi in 1964 and moved to White Bear Lake. His favorite thing to do was to go to his cabin and fish. He worked hard and everyone at work liked him and he made many friends. He was popular at the retirement center where he lived because he had a great personality and loved to make people laugh. He made the best of his time there in spite of the covid restrictions.He will be missed by many, including his good buddy Bob Bergstrom and his card playing bestie Maryls Ulsaker.

Milton Dean Ripley

Age 82 Of White Bear Lake, Minnesota Preceded in death by son, Joseph Harlan; parents, Chester and Stella; siblings, Art and Elaine (Bill) Unger; in-laws, Joe and Gertrude Riegert. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Joanne Ripley (nee Riegert), children, Julie, Sarah (Phercie) Orille and Ronald. Grandchildren Toby (Natalie), Connor (Erin) and Cecilia; sister-in-law, Alice; and several nieces and nephews. Milton was a 1956 graduate of Monroe High School. He worked for the St. Paul Hotel and was a cabinet maker. He then worked at a pizza parlor until he got a job as a CAD Designer for Buckbee Mears, where he worked for 39 years before retiring. Milton worked part time at a woodworker’s store. He was a talented woodworker, Master Craftsman and an all-around handy man. Milton loved to travel, he and his wife Joanne traveled to all 50 states.

He was also an avid outdoorsman; he took his family on numerous camping trips. Milton was also the Cub Leader and Assistant District Commissioner from 1976-1993.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 at Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 East County Road E, White Bear Lake, visitation one hour before Mass at Funeral Home. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, White Bear Lake. Due to COVID-19, everyone is required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

Nancy (Norlund) Anderson, 83, of St. Paul, passed away due to COVID-19 on Thursday, December 10, 2020. She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Dr. William E. Norlund of CA and parents, Ethel and Nels Norlund of Anoka.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 59 years, Leslie; daughter, MaryLou (Mike) Tyler of White Bear Lake; son, Charles Anderson of Ohio; grandchildren, Jack and Joanna Tyler; and other family and friends. Joseph “Joe” Buzay age 56, passed away December 5, 2020, from a heart attack.

He served his country for 13 years, and his love for animals was never ending.

Preceded in death by his grandparents. Survived by mother, Mary Jane Buzay, Children: David and Mary Anne, Partner Suzanne “The Old Lady” Dube, Brother Daniel (Barbara) Buzay, Matthew Buzay, and Sister Suzanna (Timothy) Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Lavonne (Erickson) Singer

April 16, 1940 – December 6, 2020 With striking red hair, a sharp wit and an infectious laugh, Marilyn Lavonne (Erickson) Singer moved through life with curiosity and charisma, enjoying adventures all over the world during her 80 years.

She dabbled in fine art, fashion modelling, skiing and boating. She embraced working motherhood and volunteering at school even as she handled bookkeeping and accounting for business clients. She enjoyed travel, bridge club, and especially, football Sundays celebrated with friends, despite health challenges including the autoimmune disease lupus.

Although lupus weakened her kidneys and a stroke at age 78 left her disabled, it was COVID-19 that ultimately ended her life. She died at Cerenity Senior Care in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on Dec. 6, after the pandemic virus struck the care facility.

She is survived by two children and four grandchildren, whom she deeply loved: Son CAPT Scott Singer, USN (Ret.), and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Singer, of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, and grandchildren Matthew Singer of Duluth, Minnesota, and Rachael Singer of Washington, DC. Also, daughter Stacey Singer DeLoye and son-in-law Michael DeLoye, who live in Boynton Beach, Florida, along with grandson, Thomas DeLoye. Grandson James DeLoye lives in Berkeley, California.

In her youth, Marilyn moved frequently among multiple Naval-base communities during her father, Chief Clarence Erickson’s, career in the Navy. During World War II, Marilyn’s mother, Harriet Genevieve (Wells) Erickson, sister Joan Erickson, and dear Navy friend, Iduna Holter, crisscrossed the US by train to meet the ship her dad and Carl Holter served on. After her father retired in 1953 from the Navy after 20 years of service, they settled in northern California where Clarence, a boy from Kansas, took up farming.

After high school, Marilyn took classes at San Mateo Jr. College and Chico State, and finished with a business degree from San Francisco State University where, she said she had been the first woman student to graduate from their business school.

It was in one of those classes that she met her future husband, Terry S. Singer. They eloped to Reno, and went on to enjoy a married life that took them from Thunderbird School of Global Management (then the American Institute for Foreign Trade) to a posting in Lisbon, Portugal, and Brussels, Belgium, and later Flossmoor, Illinois, and Madison, Wisconsin. While living in Europe, she modelled petite clothing for department stores and fashion houses, and appeared as an extra in several movies, including “A Man Could Get Killed,” with Sandra Dee and James Garner. But her favorite role by far was that of mother. Her son was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1965, and her daughter in Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1968.

They moved to the Madison, Wisconsin, area in 1973. For the next 20 years, Marilyn worked as an accountant, doing taxes, cost reports and nursing home audits. She also loved art and took up painting in oils at first, later watercolors. She was active with her church, St. Stephen’s Lutheran, as well as a bridge club and an informal theater group. Fall was her favorite season, as Wisconsin Badger football Saturdays and NFL Sundays brought friends together each weekend.

After their children graduated college, she and Terry divorced. Marilyn continued to move frequently, moving to Roseville, Minnesota; then the mountains of Boise, Idaho; and later her daughter’s home in Florida. After braving two consecutive Florida hurricanes in one month, Marilyn opted to return to the Midwest to be near her son’s family. She adopted a cat, Moe, who became her closest companion until a stroke left her disabled and forced a move. She lived happily for another two years at Cerenity Senior Care in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, where her intelligence made her a regular winner at trivia, and her wit and positive attitude made her a beloved member of their community.

Property tax levy clears final hurdle

WHITE BEAR LAKE — As it does every year at this time, City Council approved the 2020 tax levy and proposed 2021 budget.

Adopted was a $7.37 million 2020 levy, collectible in 2021. No one spoke at the Dec. 8 truth in taxation hearing.

As reported previously, the levy increased by $462,000 over last year. Of that amount, $203,000 is for the general fund; $152,000 for equipment and $107,000 for debt service for street improvements and major equipment purchases.

Councilman Bill Walsh offered an amendment to the resolution, asking that funds from the federal CARES Act (COVID relief) be used to offset the property tax increase.

A majority of council members disagreed.

"The amendment I offer is to reduce the levy by $203,000 and replace it with CARES Act money," Walsh said. "We were given this pot of money to offset pandemic-related costs. Then we had extra money to get out in the community; relief to businesses and individuals, and nonprofits.

We had no choice but to hand out money. But the rules changed, and we were able to capture the rest of that money and convert to the Economic Development fund. It's not a complicated issue, I think we have enough CARES Act money to offset the levy.

"It still leaves a balance in CARES Act money for next year," Walsh maintained. "Things are getting better. I think there is strong indication there will be another federal and state relief package. It's one time to lower the tax burden. It's not going to blow anyone's tax bill. But it's a little bit to keep in people's pockets."

Councilman Dan Jones said he appreciated what Walsh was proposing but felt the money needed to be reserved for people who really need it. "I don't need the $22 back on my taxes," he said. "If we did use the funds, I'd much rather see it put into capital improvement, something we're borrowing for."

Councilman Kevin Edberg didn't share Walsh's optimism about forthcoming events. "I don't think the next six months are going to be economically good times," he said.

The amendment failed 3-2; members Walsh and Steve Engstran voted yes.

Incidentally, there was an incredibly rude interruption during a Zoom presentation on the levy.

An unidentified woman profanely threatened City Manager Ellen Hiniker with physical violence.

The woman was quickly muted and removed from the "room."

The 2021 general fund budget was also approved in the amount of $12,142,500. Half of the city's general fund is supported by property taxes. Other sources of revenue have remained rather flat, Hiniker said.

In other notes of interest, a median home is valued at $256,000; an increase of 5.3%, or $12,900. That home's city taxes are $490.

A median home pays a monthly tax of $2.86 for street/sidewalk maintenance and snow removal; $16.75 for police; $3.27 for fire protection and $2.45 for parks maintenance.

Citizens of White Bear Township approved a $4.2 million tax levy at a special town board meeting Dec. 8. The levy is $243,000 less than the forecast made last March. Residents also gave the nod to a general fund budget of $4.8 million.

Township Finance Officer Tom Kelly presented the budget, which includes funding for one new administrative position and two part-time interns who will scan documents into electronic format.

Capital outlay will be up 5.6%, mostly because of the township’s 10-year street maintenance program.

“Mill and overlay is more cost-efficient than reconstruction,” Kelly said.

He noted that the township’s tax capacity had increased by 16% over 2020, mostly because of growth in the residential market. He said the median value of a home in the township is now $287,000-295,000.

The 6.5% tax increase adds $7.16 to a median-priced home’s monthly expenses. Property taxes account for 80% of township revenues.

There was some resident pushback about the increase over last year’s taxes, citing unemployment caused by COVID-19 shutdowns. Others wondered about the legality of the vote; those who participated in the meeting from home could not vote, while those present at Heritage Hall could. Township Attorney Chad Lemmon assured them that state law was followed.

WHITE BEAR CITY COUNCIL NOTES WHITE BEAR LAKE — City Council conducted the following business at its Dec. 8 meeting: • Authorized the city manager to enter into an agreement with Trane U.S. to perform a detailed investment grade audit of the Sports Center.

The city has been concerned with higher-than-anticipated energy use at the Sports Center after its renovation, said City Manager Ellen Hiniker. Trane offered to do a preliminary analysis at no cost. This audit would be a second phase of work halted in January pre-pandemic.

Trane estimates a $108,000 capital investment

is needed, which would result in about $19,000 in operational savings, or a 5.6-year payback.

There is no upfront cost for the audit; however, should the city not move forward with a fi nal work contract, an invoice of $11,246 would be sent to offset cost of services and time. Trane would guarantee a payback to any mechanical investment.

Trane has already saved the city $5,000 to $7,000 annually by making an adjustment in one electrical system during phase one, Hiniker noted.

• Heard that members of the inclusive community initiative task force will be appointed by the mayor in January. The city is launching a 9- to 12-month process to learn more about the experiences and perspectives of its residents and businesses around issues of inclusion. The mayor will also be featured in a public service announcement to explain the initiative. Anyone interested in serving on the task force should complete a brief application form by Jan. 15.

Shortcut nixed through new subdivision WHITE BEAR LAKE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A pedestrian walkway wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be required after all in the new subdivision known as Blustone Villas.

The Planning Commission wanted the developer, Mark Ashby and the 321 Group LLC, to dedicate a public right of way for pedestrians to access County Road E from the development, the former Rooney Farm. The developer would be responsible for constructing the access and the Homeowners Association would be required to maintain it.

The Rooney family is working with Ashby to plat the 5-acre farm at 1800 County Road E into nine single-family residential lots plus an outlot for stormwater.

Ashby objected to the path, telling the City Council that anyone using it could reach out and touch the homes along the easement and invite pedestrian traffic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People will buy these lots for privacy.

The walkway is too close,â&#x20AC;? he told council via the Dec. 10 Zoom meeting.

Staff felt access to E was desirable for walkability reasons, but the path could be â&#x20AC;&#x153;passiveâ&#x20AC;? and not paved. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are seniors and a school nearby,â&#x20AC;? City Planner Anne Kane pointed out, and the path would offer a shortcut to the main road.

Councilman Dan Jones felt a cut-through was asking too much.

He recalled that council wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t approve a sidewalk a few years ago for another neighborhood, â&#x20AC;&#x153;so why on earth approve this weird trail?â&#x20AC;?

he asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t access E on this trail; you would go south.â&#x20AC;?

Jones added that the city wants properties like this to be developed and â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting the (type of) homes we want in this community.

I am uncomfortable with the city stepping in for not great reasons.

Let the HOA fi gure it out; they are the only ones using it.â&#x20AC;?

There will be a 30-foot utility easement to bring sewer and water to the homes.

The subdivision will be senior friendly but not exclusive. A Rooney family member will live in the farmstead and retain the outbuildings (Lot 4). Kane said Don Rooneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son is moving into his late fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and wants the barn to store collectible cars.

The popular nursery sign along E will be moved to make way for expanded county right of way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The community would fi nd it a loss to lose the message board,â&#x20AC;?

Kane noted.

Asked by Councilman Bill Walsh how the plat fits the Comprehensive Plan, Kane said the property has been guided for future single-family subdivision. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an opportunity site knowing there is need for people who want to go to single-level living,â&#x20AC;? she replied.

Kane added the Comp Plan did not call for the walkway connection in the cul-de-sac.

Twin Cities native Chef Gary Bougie had a dream and passion for creating the perfect pizza experience. In 2013, while operating his Chicago pizza restaurant Slyce, Gary moved back to Minnesota and opened Pizzeria Pezzo.

BUS DRIVERS: Facing new challenges to keep students safe FROM PAGE 1

break went on all summer. Aside from delivering meals, I had extra time to work in my garden,” Giossi said.

Giossi noted that he is still working, delivering meals and driving kids who are having trouble with distance learning, but much has changed.

“School started in September with a hybrid model. This left us with far fewer passengers but more training, mostly with (personal protective

equipment) and cleaning the bus after each group,” Giossi said.

And, like employees in other industries, they have faced new challenges.

“The obvious ones are extra training, dealing with PPEs and all the extra cleaning. Not so obvious is the unknown. Things change so fast no one knows. Management does the best they can, but even they can’t tell you what they don’t know,” Giossi said.

one experiencing these new challenges. A driver and an aide from Rehbein Transit Company Inc., which serves Centennial Schools, described this year as less structured as before.

“With school on and off, we are a bit discombobulated,” Betty Baily and Cheryl Edberg told Press in an interview.

Edberg has been a driver with the company for six years, Baily has been an aide for four. They said they are taking whatever routes they are assigned to and are grateful for them.

“We love our kids, and we are never sure how long or which ones will be there tomorrow. Everything seems so up in the air,” Baily said.

One of their biggest challenges is ensuring the young kids wear their masks properly, but they’ve found creative ways to encourage this.

“With the variety of masks, it's a way to engage them. We get them singing songs, we have some toys for some that need to feel comfortable,” Baily said.

Despite the pandemic, drivers in both the WBLAS and Centennial school districts are doing their best to continue to engage with the kids on their routes.

“Most interactions happen when kids enter and leave the bus, so I still talk with the kids that ride but just as they pass. Kids are no longer allowed in the front seats, so talking while waiting to leave school is difficult,” Giossi said.

And although this year has been hard, Giossi has seen his efforts impact the lives of children over the years, so he continues to engage as best he can.

“One young lady had some emotional issues. She would sit quietly in front with her brother. This gave me the opportunity to talk with them before we

left school in the afternoon. Over the course of driving them three years, she learned to trust me,” Giossi said.

They had some nice talks, and he will always remember them. Outside of encouraging his students and bringing them out of their shells, Giossi also has experience helping them cope during stressful situations with his other positions.

“Everything breaks down, even buses. A middle school bus broke down while a hurricane was slamming Florida. While waiting for another bus, I explained how storms like that happen. Kids told me I should have been a teacher,” Giossi said.

Another example of his success at encouraging his young charges was when shortly after leaving the elementary school with a nearly full bus — including 11 kindergartners — the bus broke down after just two stops.

“I was very worried that these kids would get scared and start crying, etc.

Instead, they had a ball. The next day one young man asked if we could do it again. Can’t say, but I like to think I had something to do with them staying comfortable,” Giossi said.

“There are always some challenges in dealing with kids. None (of the children) are perfect, but we treat them as if they are as much as we can. We are a team on our bus,” Edberg said.

As with everything during this pandemic, the return to school, bus rides and normalcy are unpredictable.

“Until there’s a vaccine, COVID-19 will continue to change everyone’s lives. I don’t know if we’ll be going back to school this school year or not,” Giossi said.

Until then, the drivers will continue to do what they love in the best way they can, while keeping the kids on their routes safe.

SPECIAL TOWN BUDGET MEETING REVIEW Residents in attendance of White Bear Township’s Special Town Budget Meeting on December 8th approved a final 2021 property tax levy of $4,248,063.00. The levy is a 15.98% increase over the 2020 tax levy. The typical home in the Township saw market values increase about 2.93% which when added to the property tax levy results in a property tax increase between $3.89 and $9.53 per month for homes valued at $172,413 & $383,141 respectively. BEZOS FUND: Solid Ground recipient of $1.25M gift FROM PAGE 1

• Divert 115 families from shelter • House 40 families with income-based rental assistance while they work to increase their income • Provide 120 families with mental and chemical health services The nonprofit operates six housing and service programs including two East Metro Place apartment buildings in White Bear Lake, a 10-unit complex called Home Front for homeless veterans and three scattered site units. Volunteers help with goal planning, budget and tenant training, skill training, parenting classes and child tutoring. About 80% of families referred to Solid Ground last year secured housing. Overall, 100% of its referrals result in housing of some kind and 89% of the children attend school regularly. That number is low, Kauffman noted. Usually, they’re in the 95th percentile. “We are serving families with more trauma and other barriers,” she said.

One grateful recipient of Solid Ground’s services is Shron King, a single mother of three who found herself homeless in 2018. “In my 49 years of living, I have never been in a program where people are so honest and willing to help. Expanding this program (with the grant) will help so many more women and their children.”

King moved to Minneapolis from Chicago in 2016. She was referred to Solid Ground after losing her North Minneapolis apartment in 2018 and now lives in Little Canada. “Solid Ground gives women opportunities to help themselves,” she said. “They offer so many resources for us.

There is so much moral support. Sometimes you need help.” An unemployed housekeeper, King added she loves the program. I don’t feel so alone, and they keep me encouraged.”

It’s a good testimonial for a program with a daunting mission. The money will help families transition to a higher level of self-sufficiency.

“It’s so exciting. You can never feel like you have enough resources to do what you know needs to be done,” Kauffman said. “I’m sure the money will go fast, but it’s truly transformative. It allows us to do things we would have never been able to do before.”

Solid Ground’s mission is to prevent and end homelessness for families with children through housing, services and opportunity. The agency serves about 500 men, women and children every year in Ramsey and Washington counties.

Solid Ground was invited to apply for the large grant, which is part of a $2 billion commitment from Bezos. “Of course, we jumped on it,” Kauffman said.

The fund works with an advisory board of homelessness advocates and leaders to select recipients, but she wasn’t exactly sure how they were picked. “I think they focus on areas where Amazon has business locations,” Kauffman said.

This year, the Bezos fund provided $105.9 million in grants to 42 different nonprofits across the country.

Solid Ground will use funds from the grant three ways over a span of several years: • To expand the successful Homework Starts with Home program into Washington County.

The program helps keep kids in their homes and focused on success in school instead of worrying where they’ll sleep at night. “We started the homework program because of the dramatic growth in the number of students who are either homeless or couch hop,” Kauffman said. “That’s a dangerous thing during a pandemic. More than ever, we have learned how important housing is to someone’s health and well-being.”

• Shelter diversion. Solid Ground is working with Washington County to create a shelter diversion program. “It’s about keeping people out of shelters or unsheltered situations like living in a car or a park,” Kauffman explained. “There are a lot of good outcomes with diversion. It’s a cost-effective way to end homelessness.”

• Hire a staff counselor who will work with folks struggling with mental illness and chemical dependency. “A lot of our participants struggle with that,” Kauffman said. “About two-thirds of our residents have some kind of disability, often mental illness or dependency. Many are struggling with the stresses of the pandemic and isolation.”

With the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund grant, Solid Ground will achieve the following goals over the next three years, Kauffman said:

Dual goalies came through for Bears soccer

White Bear Lake girls soccer had an unusual goalkeeper situation this fall that worked out well, with seniors Tristian Lehner and Haley Vokaty each playing one half of each game.

The Bears had a 9-4 record and allowed just nine goals. Both goalies were among five Bears making all-conference.

Each played 520 minutes. Vokaty gave up five goals, made 40 saves, and had an .889 save percentage. Lehner gave up four goals, made 45 saves, and had a .918 save percentage. Vokaty wore No. 0 and Lehner No. 1.

“It’s not common to change goalies at halftime,” said John Dierkhising, cocoach with David Ashley. But the Bears did it every game and it worked. “We tied the school record for fewest goals-against for a season,” he said. Both goalies made

a number of big saves and controlled their box when pressured, he said.

Lehner and Vokaty were backups to Ella Janicki, a four-year starter, last year. Lehner had been the backup since ninth grade, but was coming off a basketball knee injury, so the Bears opted to have three keepers.

This year, the coaches could not decide between them. Dierkhising, who was a goalkeeper himself, said he never liked going into a game not knowing which keeper was going to play, so he made a deal with his two goalies.

“I asked if they would be comfortable coming into games at halftime with brief warmups, and they were OK with it. I said we would make sure each started two home games each, and then we would go from there.”

Vokaty, asked if the situation suited her, said, “Oh, for sure. Tristian is awesome and I was glad to split time with

her. We always knew we both would play, and we would switch every other game who would start.”

Lehner expected to have to compete for the starting job, which is the usual approach. “But I was kinda glad we ended up splitting time,” she said. “I was surprised at first, but thankful for it at the end.”

Goalkeeping is a nerve-wracking position and Lehner liked having “the weight off my shoulders” when she was done at halftime. She also appreciated being able to scout the other team in the first half when she didn’t start.

It was a fun season, Vokaty said.

“Everyone one on the team was super nice, we were all pretty close, and we won a lot of games, which was a bonus.”

Both plan to play college soccer. Vokaty said she’ll play at Wisconsin-Stout.

Lehner is undecided where.

MAHTOMEDI SPORTS BRIEFS

Eleven Mahtomedi swimmers were named to the all-Metro East team after the Zephyrs posted a 6-1 record and placed second. Ellie Wilke, a senior, was named team MVP. Seniors on the all-conference team were Wilke, Lauren Anderson, Ryann Buttke; juniors Adriel Showers, Skylar Clowser, Elizabeth Hansen; sophomores Aleksa Atkinson, Sydney Armstrong, and Ella Matson; freshman Emmerson Buckley; and eighth-grader Hannah Drecktrah. Getting honorable mentions were Grace Newman, Katherine Schneider and Marin Seevers. Other team awards went to Showers (Zephyr Award), Hansen (Spirit Award) and Maddie Ruppel (top rookie).

Zephyr boys soccer has four on all-Metro East Four Mahtomedi boys soccer players were named to the all-Metro East team. They are midfielder Nolan Pratumwon, forward T.J. Bruner and forward/mid Ethan Peterson, all seniors; and junior midfielder Luke Yee Yick. The Zephyrs were 7-2 in conference, and 10-2 overall with the section championship. Pratumwon was the scoring leader with 18 goals and 10

All-conference picks are seniors Erika Broten and Jojie Barry; juniors Audrey Barry and Cambelle Waldspurger; and sophomore Katelyn Buelke. Honorable mentions went to Haley James, Lanie Padelford, Mickey Stockness, and Anabel Hillstrom. Team awards went to Paige Janssen, most improved; Stella Grabow, attitude; Waldspurger, best effort; and Jojie Barry, best defender.

Named next year’s captains were Audrey Barry, Janssen and Waldsburger.

Audrey Barry scored 13 of the team’s 33 goals. Buelke had seven goals and Lily Lindquist four. The Zephyrs and goalie Janssen held opponents to seven goals in 11 games.

Six White Bear Lake football players were named to the all-Suburban East Conference team. The Bears finished 2-3 in conference and 2-4 overall.

The all-conference picks, all seniors, are Branden Berwald, quarterback; Spencer Oxton, running back and cornerback; Jeff Odamtten, running back, kicker, and safety; Tanner Domschot, wide receiver and outside linebacker; Dimitri Hatzis, offensive guard; and John McBride, tight end.

Getting honorable mention were seniors Nico Brown, defensive end; Mason Fike, center; and Spencer Sommers, cornerback; and juniors Matt Sloan, outside linebacker, and Anthony Lewis-Royal, running back.

Berwald completed 77 of 152 passes for 840 yards and five touchdowns, with five interceptions. He rushed for seven touchdowns, netting 175 yards in 62 attempts.

Top receivers were Alex Lockwood with 21 catches for 181 yards; Kaleb Kirchling, 17 for 152 yards; Oxton,12 for 130 yards and three TDs; McBride, seven for 124 yards (one TD); Domschot, 10 for 120 yards; and Odamtten, four for 92 yards (one TD).

Lewis-Royal led in rushing with 217 yards in 66 attempts, scoring one touchdown. Berwald scored 50 points, Oxton 32 and Odamtten 25 (including 10 extra points and one field goal). Defensively, Domschot made three of the team’s four interceptions.

Oxton had the other. Leading in tackles-for-loss were Sloan with eight and Toiu Oyekenie with six.

Five Mahtomedi cross country runners were named to the all-Metro East team. They are senior Kaia Kapfer, junior Makayla Fischer and sophomore Sarah Brings on the girls team, and juniors Ryan Malvey and Chris Benson on the boys team.

Two White Bear Lake players were named to the all-Suburban East Conference boys soccer team.

They are Justin Wussler, senior midfielder, and Eli Treichel, sophomore defenseman. Getting honorable mention were Alex Carlson, senior goalkeeper; Gavin Rogers, junior forward; and Daniel Vargas, senior midfielder. The Bears were 2-7-2 in conference and 3-8-3 overall.

WHITE BEAR LAKE FOOTBALL Spencer Oxton was a versatile senior back for the White Bear Lake football team, earning the all-conference honor. He is a three-sport athlete, also playing hockey (forward) and baseball (shortstop). Oxton, 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, caught 12 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns, carried 32 times for 126 yards and one score, and returned eight kickoffs for a 22.5-yard average. He was a reliable safety whose season highlight was a pick six that helped the Bears edge Woodbury. “He is extremely coordinated, quick, has good vision, and moves sideways real well,” said coach Ryan Bartlett. “He did a lot of things for us and seldom left the field.”

The 6-foot-4 senior passed for 816 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception, completing 46 of 89 attempts.

Also named all-district were Tony Neubeck, senior fullback/defensive end; Ethan Loss, junior cornerback; Kyle Oswald, senior safety/placekicker; Jordan Hull, junior running back; JP Johnson, senior lineman; and Jake Schetinski, senior lineman. Neubeck and Loss were repeat picks.

Proof of excellence: MHS senior’s baked goods at Anchor Coffee

Elouise Suoja, a senior at Mahtomedi High School, has her own baking business, 350 Degrees Bakery.

Suoja recently started selling her baked goods at Anchor Coffee House in White Bear Lake.

“I started baking muffi ns and cookies at home about four years ago. Then when I was a sophomore, I got a job at My Little Cakes in Stillwater, and that really taught me how to bake. Basically, everything I learned is from there,” Suoja said.

Since then, she’s catered for weddings, parties and has baked private orders on her own. At the end of this past summer, Suoja began supplying Anchor Coffee House with her baked goods.

She explained that she had made cookies for her neighbor’s graduation party and Anchor’s owner, Brad Atkinson, tried some of her cookies.

He reached out to her to bake for them. “It was really cool to get that opportunity,” Suoja said.

Atkinson said Suoja was a great “fit” for the Anchor. “We make a very solid effort to support, promote and encourage young adults in the White Bear Lake community. A lot of our young partners are artists, musicians — even writers. Elouise just happens to be a very talented young woman and a super awesome baker,” he said. “We have a very amazing team, and it keeps growing, one talented young adult at a time.”

Suoja restocks her goods at Anchor weekly. A variety of her items are available there, including cake pops, cupcakes, cookies, and gluten-free items. She has a cottage food license.

For other orders, Suoja said people typically message her through her bakery’s Instagram page, and she keeps business cards at Anchor. She

said she gets a lot of business just by word of mouth. She doesn’t have a website, but hopes to soon.

Of her business name, Suoja said, “I picked that name because I bake all of my goods at 350 degrees, so I thought it was a fitting name.”

Some of her favorite items to bake are cupcakes and cake, because she

likes the creativity they allow. She also enjoys making different types of cookies. “There’s so many different flavors you can combine,” she said.

Suoja uses all of her own original recipes. Her favorite flavor is coconut blackberry, though she also does a smore’s cupcake with marshmallow frosting and a banana peanut butter combination.

Suoja is saving the money she makes from catering jobs for college. She was recently accepted to Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction for its baking and pastry program. She also plans to take business courses. “I’m really excited to learn more there,” she said.

She hopes to open up a bakery sometime in the future, whether that’s after college or 10 years down the road.

In addition to baking, Suoja stays busy through a variety of other activities. She plays guitar and ukulele and has been dancing for many years at 4th Street Dance Center.

“I have a hobby farm where I breed bunnies for fun,” she shared.

Suoja also has her own Etsy shop, where she sells accessories made from upcycled materials.

“I have a lot of hobbies,” Suoja said, laughing.

Suoja expressed gratitude for the people who have invested in her so far and said she would like to be a mentor to others who may have an interest in baking.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — It looks like county-owned South Shore Boulevard will become an east-bound one-way street to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians, a design similar to the popular Lake Avenue Trail. Plans call for the county to "turnback" the roadway to city and township jurisdiction.

City staff met with Ramsey County Dec. 3 to review fi nal details of an agreement, which will be provided in writing through a memorandum of understanding for council consideration at its Jan. 21 meeting.

Meanwhile, to keep the project moving, the county will be releasing a request for proposals this month for engineering and fi nal design services.

City Engineer Paul Kauppi discussed the 2022 project and the county's intention to relinquish most of South Shore at the Dec. 8 council meeting.

The trail is part of Lake Links Association's mission to circumnavigate White Bear Lake.

Kauppi said a key element is that the trail fit within right of way with minimal impact to adjacent properties.

"A one-way for South Shore is the desired confi guration," he

told council. "Ramsey County studies indicate eastbound one-way movement is the most desired direction for reasons like maintenance and public safety."

The engineer reviewed the following points regarding the project: • The 10-foot ped/bike trail will be constructed along the length of South Shore, similar in design to the Lake Avenue trail.

• The roadway will be twoway and county-owned from White Bear Avenue to McKnight, then turn into an eastbound one-way to East County Line.

• The city and township will accept jurisdiction from McKnight to East County Line. The city's jurisdiction ends at Bellaire.

• The county will perform a pavement reclamation project, which adds a 15-to 20-year life. The county will then provide payment to the city in lieu of a mill and overlay that provides a 30-year pavement.

• The county will apply funds dedicated by the Legislature for the trail work against the city's cost share. Ultimately, the city will have little to no costs related to the trail and

roadway project. However, lighting, benches and landscaping amenities will be the city's responsibility. The trail will have a curb or barrier similar to Lake Avenue.

Councilman Dan Jones said he's not thrilled with the agreement but it gets the job done.

"It gets us a 30-year road, which is acceptable," he stated.

"This is a continuation of the Sather trail. This is truly an investment in our future."

One thing still not addressed, however, is a sidewalk on County F west of Gisella to McKnight, Jones added. "It's inexcusable for the county to walk away. There are ripple effects to a trail going one way, such as increased traffic on F. It is the county's responsibility to do that."

City Manager said it's her understanding that the county is making a commitment to a sidewalk on F, but probably not until 2023.

In May 2018, the Minnesota Legislature approved $2.6 million grant to Ramsey County for trail improvements on South Shore Boulevard.

The county will hold another open house in the new year to obtain public feedback as part of the fi nal design process.

Man of action: Centennial grad is stunt man, Ninja Warrior

Kyle Soderman is appearing on a billboard on Highway 494 near the airport, promoting the Lino Lakes native’s appearance on the current NBC Sports Channel show “World Chase Tag.” Soderman, 26, works as a stunt man in films and music videos, most notably in a Bon Jovi video, in Los Angeles. He’s also an athlete who’s appeared on American Ninja Warrior (NBC) in 2019 and Ultimate Beastmaster (Netflix) in 2017.

“Growing up, I never saw myself as having a nine-tofive job,” Soderman said with a grin during an interview with Quad News.

World Chase Tag is his most recent venture. His sixman team, Hollywood Freerunners competed in the first episode of the show and the fifth episode Thursday, Dec. 10. You can view a clip of Soderman from the first episode on https://instagram.com/p/CHda6PTD5iS/ The billboard is presented by Kris Lindahl Real Estate, which offers free exposure to a local entrepreneurs with the most intriguing presentation. “Soderman did an amazing flip, and one of his incredible stunts will be featured on the billboard,” explained an advance press release from KRLE. World Chase Tag, owned by a U.K. company, is an intensified version of “the childhood game we all played,” Soderman explained, held in a 40-by-40 arena with various scaffolding for barriers, consisting of 20-second duels where the chaser has to tag the chased to see which team gets the point.

The 2012 graduate of Centennial High School played baseball as a youth, but was much more interested in individual action sports than team sports and did not join any school teams in high school.

“I wanted to do what my older brothers did. When they did motocross, I did motocross. When they did snowboarding, I did snowboarding.”

His parents, Brian and Laurie have operated Rock Gardens, a landscape supply business, in Lino Lakes for about 30 years. He’s the third of three brothers.

Troy, the oldest, works for an aviation company in Salt Lake City and is preparing to be a pilot. Dustin returned to the family business. Soderman has worked for his parents off and on throughout his life and is home now due to the shutdown of the entertainment business.

His main ventures were motocross, snowboarding, paintball tournaments, and BMX, during his high

school years and in college at St. Cloud State, where he earned a degree in real estate “that I haven’t used yet, except to invest in real estate.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound athlete moved on to Ninja Warrior competition, rock-climbing (for fun and exercise), and more recently World Chase Tag. He’s done well enough in Ninja meets around the country to earn an appearance on the once-a-year, televised nationals, in 2018 and again this year, although this year’s program was called off due to COVID-19. “I was in L.A. the day everything shut down. We were doing interviews on Friday and it was supposed to start Saturday,” he said.

After that, he returned to Rock Gardens. “It’s a blessing to be able to come home to this place, be with my family and make money,” he said.

Soderman got into Hollywood stunts as a natural progression from his action sports.

“They need people who know how to move and how to fall,” he said.

With Rock Gardens closing after the Christmas tree season until April each year, he decided “I might as well go to L.A. and give that a try,” and moved there in January 2018. He’s landed several jobs and got into the union, SAG AFTRA, in October of 2019, meaning he’s eligible for TV and movie work.

His stunt man highlight is a featured role in a Bon Jovi video for the song “Limitless.” Soderman and a stunt actress, Angie Dick, portray a couple who escape from a prison encampment, sprint through L.A. streets and make a 40-foot fall in tandem.

“That’s my highlight so far. That’s the only time my face has been on screen. Most of the time, you’re doubling for an actor and your face isn’t shown.”

One of his movie stunts was doubling for an actor named Carlos Sanson in a Netflix movie, “Malibu Rescue, the Second Wave,” who’s running an obstacle course. He’s had around 20 roles counting several small ones that didn’t pay much as he built up his resume.

Extremely fit, he hasn’t done any weight-lifting for about six years, preferring body exercises like pushups pull-ups and rock climbing which develops a strong grip.

So far, he’s had no stunt injuries; his only mishaps have been breaking his wrist twice while snowboarding.

Reflecting on how he’s spending his 20’s, Soderman is certainly lived up to his ambition about avoiding the nine-to-five routine. He plans to continue stunt work as long as he can, maybe move into stunt coordinating, and, eventually, use his degree to go into real estate.

December 30th 1932 to December 10th 2020 Bob Broen was known for his ability to smoke cigars while water skiing. He died at his home on Thursday night, sitting next to his wife Patricia after eating his evening ice cream.

Bob was the second of four rowdy boys who grew up in several small farming communities throughout Minnesota, including Two Harbors and Osakis, where he loved spending entire summers swimming in the lake. After moving to Minneapolis, he was studying Engineering at the University of Minnesota where he and Pat met, they fell in love, and married. Bob was then employed by Honeywell for what was to be a four-decade career.

When he retired, he was Manager of the Computer Network Operations Department.

Bob felt that life was something to be enjoyed. He had a talent for participating in sports and leisure simultaneously. In 1968 he and Pat moved their 3 children (Barb, Ken, and Ron), to a house on White Bear Lake, where they have lived for more than 50 years. He felt that the best way for his lakeside home to be enjoyed was to share it with everyone he knew and relished any opportunity to host large gatherings of friends and family. He welcomed neighborhood children to slide on the hill behind the house in the winter, and swim from his dock in the summer.

Bob was a great resource for his grandchildren whether they needed a ride to school or to be defended from doubting teachers. He was very active through retirement, enjoying skiing in the Rockies and serving as the Executive Director of the White Bear Yacht Club Sailing Division for more than 10 years.

His wife of 68 years, his three children, his grandchildren Catherine, Peter, Garrett, and Tom, and his great-granddaughter Emma, will all be telling stories about his sassiness for the rest of their lives.

Age 89 of White Bear Lake Ruth D. Teichroew, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2020.

Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Warren; grandson, Daniel; and great granddaughter, Lucy Hanson. Survived by children, Paula (Tom) Mason and Bruce (Lisa); grandchildren, Anne (Kasey) Yoder, Mary (Ed) Hanson, Anna (Seth) Warnecke, and James; great grandchildren, Eddie, Will, and Elsie Hanson, Grace Yoder, and Jordan Warnecke; and many other family and friends.

Ruth grew up in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and moved to St. Cloud to attend college. It was there she met Warren. Following graduation, she found a teaching job in White Bear Lake and, after their marriage in 1952, she and Warren made White Bear Lake their life-long home. While raising their family, she continued to teach in the White Bear Lake school district for many years.

Ruth was active in the White Bear United Methodist Church and in PEO. She and Warren shared many summers at the cabin on Ottertail Lake and winters in Fort Lauderdale. Always ready to go, they enjoyed the adventures of world travel.

She treasured time spent with family and friends, and her support and encouragement will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to Cerenity White Bear Lake for the compassionate care they provided for Ruth and the family. A private family memorial service will be held at this time, with a celebration of her life planned in the summer of 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

This past Sunday's dusting of snow didn't damper spirits much, but it did create rather slippery roads before the salt trucks made it out. Monday was one of the "coldest" mornings since November 13th when it was 10º, and also on of the coldest daytime temperatures since it was 26º on November 30.
