By weekday, Rick Gwynn is commander of the VFW in White Bear Lake. By weekend, he goes by another name: Santa Claus. His Santa gigs are mostly mil-
itary, the Hugo resident doesn't do malls, but the mission is the same: to bring joy to children. "I get enjoyment out of seeing the expressions on the kids' faces," said Gwynn, who resides not at the North Pole but on the north end of Bald Eagle Lake.
He had to buy a fake belly after losing 50 pounds, but Santa Rick does a pretty good job convincing tykes he's the real deal. The red velvet suit was "made with love" by his sister SEE SANTA RICK, PAGE 8A

Thane Hawkins (Jr.) admits he has a disdain for stagnation. It’s that desire to press forward and move on that led the Minnesota native to his career as a winemaker in Oregon’s picturesque Willamette Valley. The son of Blanche and Thane Hawkins Sr., owners of Polar Chevrolet in White Bear Lake, attended Tufts University in Boston where an intended journalism career revealed an aptitude for the visual arts. Hawkins enrolled in fi lm school in Vancouver, earning a degree in computer graphics. “I was fascinated by the merging of technology, art, and fi lmmaking,” he recalled. Over the next 10 years, Hawkins built a successful career in the animated fi lm business, working on groundbreaking fi lms of the time, including

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — Two more dining options are soon coming to the area of Highway 96 and Centerville Road. The Vadnais Heights City Council last week approved plans for a new 4,300-square-foot commercial building in the parking lot of the Heights Plaza strip mall. The building will become home to two yet-to-be-named tenants. The city granted special use permits allowing two “convenience food restaurants.” Property owner Jim Volp wasn't ready to name names because he said he's still in lease negotiations. He told the city’s Planning Commission that a coffee shop is a prospective tenant for the 2,000-square-foot space and a pizza restaurant is interested in the 2,200-squarefoot space. Volp told the City Council that the tenant that is “99 percent” probable wants to open by Labor Day. He’ll try to have construction completed this spring in order to meet that opening day request, but long wait times for some building materials might necessitate a longer build time, he said. The building will be erected in the same area where the former PDQ gas pumps were once located. The customer entrances to both establishments will face east. Both restaurants will have patios for up to six tables adjacent to the entrances. The coffee shop space will have a drive-thru on the north side of the building. The council granted a setback variance allowing the drive-thru lane to be slightly closer to Highway 96 than typically allowed. The mall’s right-in, right-out access at Highway 96 and the full access off of Centerville Road will remain unaltered. A few existing parking spaces will be removed but new ones will be added, for a net gain of 27 spaces. That will bring the total to 237. City Planner Carrie Fuhrman applauded the developer for designing a façade for the new building that she said integrates well with the strip mall. The council's conditions for approval included high-end materials and screening for the trash and outdoor storage enclosures on the west side of the building, since it will be highly visible to drivers using the Highway 96 access. The council unanimously supported the development plans. Mayor Marc Johannsen said he often hears from residents that there are not enough local dining options and he hopes the tenants will have offerings that are new to the area.
