Survey objective: support existing businesses BY KRISTINE GOODRICH EDITOR

PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Playing outside on a frozen field While waiting for the fish to bite, a group of ice anglers leap up for a pass during an impromptu game of football on the frozen surface of White Bear Lake Saturday, Jan. 9. Like their professional counterparts, they didn’t let the frigid temperature of near zero degrees stop them from tossing the pigskin around outside in the elements.

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — Volunteers plan to visit approximately 40 of the city's businesses with a number of questions. Their objective is to learn about the challenges businesses are facing and to develop recommendations on ways the community can better support its businesses. For the second time, the city and the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation will participate in the Business Retention and Expansion Survey Program offered by the University of Minnesota's Extension Office. While community leaders tend to focus their efforts on attracting new businesses, the BR&E survey aims at helping those leaders understand the vitality and growth potential of existing businesses. According to a memo to the City Council from Community Development Director Carie Fuhrman, research estimates that more than 85 percent of all new jobs are created not by new businesses but rather by existing businesses that are expanding. Communities also usually are more successful in enticing new businesses when their existing businesses are SEE SURVEY, PAGE 8A

Figure skater makes national chammpionships elite division debut on hometown ice BY KRISTINE GOODRICH EDITOR

Daniel Kulenkamp has a modest goal for his debut in the most elite division of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. “I just want to go out and skate as well as I can and enjoy the experience skating in front of my home crowd,” said the 20-year-old Mahtomedi native. The figure skater has competed in national championships several times before, placing as high as fi fth. But this is his fi rst time as a contender in the top senior division, competing against 19 of the top male figure skaters in

the country. After many achievements as a teenager in the novice and junior levels, Kulenkamp opted to enter the senior division this season in hopes he could make it to the national championships next week and get to perform with the best of the best in his home state. Kulenkamp realizes it's unlikely he'll earn a medal in his first outing competing against the likes of 2015 runner-up Adam Rippon and 2013 champion Max Aaron. It's a dream come true just to advance past the regionals his first year in the top division and make it to nationals the year it's held on his home turf, he said.

He's especially excited for his short program, choreographed with recently retired Olympian Douglas Razzano, to the tune of “I won't give up” by Jason Mraz. Kulenkamp described it as “probably my favorite program ever.” Kulenkamp will have a large crowd of friends and family cheering him on, including many associates from the rink on which he grew up skating: the White Bear Sports Center. He took his first skating lesson at age 4. His dad was a hockey coach and wanted his eldest son to play hockey. “It didn’t turn out SEE FIGURE SKATER, PAGE 8A
