Every community is full of hidden gems- from local businesses and restaurants to a wide range of annual festivals and community celebrations. Events such as Farmers markets, art fairs, music festivals, parades and community festivals like Manitou Days and Vadnais Heights Days bring the community together during the summer. In the winter, residents can venture out to the various parks and trails located around the community or take a brief drive to one of the five alpine ski resorts in the area.
When there is not a large community festival going on, residents can attend a show at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center, take an art class, participate in library programs and spend a day at one of the beaches surrounding White Bear Lake. There is plenty available to keep you busy all year round in the various communities.
As always, readers should check their community website or call prior to
Madeline Dolby Press Publications
venturing out for a day filled with activity.
If you have news to share with our news team, please send it to news@ presspubs.com. Journey through town full of culture
Walking from Lake Avenue to 12th Street in Downtown White Bear Lake used to be difficult because of a lack of sidewalks. Now it’s difficult for a whole other reason: the amount of things to do along the way! Lake Avenue is where you’ll find the Fillebrown House, a cottage preserved to resemble the heyday of the 1920s resort era. The library on Second Street hosts dozens of classes and presentations every month, from monthly mystery-book clubs to historical lectures on the town’s prohibition history. Washington Square is home to Lake Country Booksellers, independently owned since 1980 with thousands of selections to peruse. Fourth Street is where one finds The Armory, base of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society, who put on spectacular programming, hosting
Polynesian outrigger specialists to Gangster Bus Tours.
The Arts District starts off of Eighth Street, where the Avenue of the Arts stands tall. The Hanifl Performing Arts Center houses Lakeshore Players, whose eyepopping shows punch far above the weight class of a typical community theater. Children’s Performing Arts not only runs classes there for grades K-12, they put on intentional programming that featured the national debut of a play from a renowned children’s author! White Bear Center for the Arts maintains one of the best glass and pottery kilns in the upper metro, and its exhibit hall shows off art both traditional and cutting edge, facilitating an augmented reality exhibit last winter.
Two major additions to the Arts
District are expected to open in late 2024. First, the McNeely Music Center is putting the finishing touches on construction, with staffing anticipated shortly. The new 9-12 high school will also unveil the 850-seat performing arts center come early November, fly and backdrop system included. Walking the spread of Downtown White Bear, your feet are probably killing you. Thankfully, The Old Stewart on 12th Street hosts regular, meditative sound baths, rejuvenating your body and mind. That’s a good thing, too, because you’ll be so jazzed about all the activities you haven’t explored yet, you’ll be back on your feet and out the door, walking back to Lake Avenue all over again!
The Arts District in White Bear Lake showcases a variety of both visual and performing arts events throughout the year.

Abundant options: Breakfast to dinner
When it comes to food and drinks, White Bear Lake and its surrounding areas are home to some of the best dining opportunities east of the Twin Cities.
Finding a meal, drink or treat you enjoy is an easy endeavor in the area, as the restaurants, breweries, cafes and more have a little bit of everything for anyone.
Start with a cup of coffee and baked treat from one of many coffee shops or bakeries. When lunch rolls around, trust the local deli and cafe experts to make a BLT, reuben, sub… you name it.
The options are endless come dinner time. From steak, to walleye, to sushi, to tacos, the restaurants in the White Bear Lake area have every craving
covered. Not only can customers look forward to a magnificent meal, but most locations have plentiful selections of beer, wine and cocktails.
After a full day of eats don’t forget to grab a sweet treat from a restaurant, shop or bakery.
Threaded through all the businesses in White Bear Lake and surrounding areas is a touching commitment to community from both owners and customers.
A number of business owners are from the area, and have been here a significant amount of time. They are eager to serve their fellow community members and be a business the locals can’t go without.
On the flip side, many customers hope to see local businesses thrive and to have places to gather with friends or family. Catch sports teams and their families at restaurants after a big win, or find long-time friends catching up over lunch at a local cafe.
It is safe to say the businesses and locals cannot go without one another.
Truly, there is no shortage of restaurants and more to enjoy in the White Bear Lake area. Whether you’re trying somewhere new or stopping in as a regular, the dining establishments of White Bear Lake are thrilled to welcome all.
Seasonal outdoor dining locations are abundant in the area, including the patio at Washington Square in downtown White Bear Lake.

Metropolitan Council
390 Robert St. N. St Paul, MN 55101, 651-602-1000 or metrocouncil.org.
OVERVIEW:
The Met Council, established by the state Legislature in 1967, coordinates planning and development within the sevencounty Twin Cities metropolitan area. The council works with local communities to operate the region’s largest bus system, collect and treat wastewater, engage communities and the public in planning for future growth, provide forecasts of the region’s population and household growth, provide affordable housing opportunities. provide planning, acquisitions and funding for a regional system of parks and trails, and provide a framework for decisions and implementation for regional services including aviation, transportation, parks and open space, water quality and water management. Governance: The 17-member Met Council has 16 members who each represent a geographic district and one chairman, Charlie Zelle, who serves at-large. They all are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the governor. The state Senate confirms council member appointments.

“I was just thinking that, five years ago right now, we were prepping for the referendum to be on the ballot … The amount of building work that’s been done? It blows your mind when you sit down and think about it,” School District Board Member Jessica Ellison recently stated.
The renovated and expanded 9-12 high school is the flagship project of the 2019 $326 million bond referendum, and the completed building is opening its doors for the 2024-25 school year. Main features include The Union, which not only serves as the school’s cafeteria, but it also contains a student-run coffee shop titled “School Grounds” as well as the school store; career pathways islands, walk around, windowed areas that highlight White Bear’s programs designed for students interested in a specific field; and
learning studios, a breakout space with shifting boundaries based on each teacher’s needs. Each studio has “Flex Furniture” that provides different types of seating or standing options to accommodate a child’s learning style.
Now that the 9-12 students are all in one building, South Campus has transformed into Mariner Middle School. A new wing of classrooms and an additional gymnasium greet the inaugural attendees. Classroom blocks and hallways are grouped by color to ease navigation, especially for sixth graders. “Engagement in learning is always going to be primary for us,” says Mariner Middle School Principal Christina Pierre. “We want our students to have a voice. We want them to have choices in how they learn … and we want all these wonderful spaces we’re moving into to be
leveraged for student learning.”
Many of these wonderful spaces are White Bear’s updated elementary schools. Buildings like Oneka and Otter Lake Elementary have added five new classrooms. Lakeaires and Vadnais Heights Elementary now have orchestra rooms. Birch Lake and Lincoln have extended-day offices. All elementary schools also received updated classroom facilities and media center upgrades. Safety and security features were similarly enhanced.
Going forward, the district center offices will be moving to the Sunrise Park building this December and Central Middle School will expand into the space left behind. From top to bottom, White Bear Lake Area School District has shed its winter coat and is ready to roar.
