bordering on the sublime
Flintshire. Why go further?
2
In Flintshire you can come a very long way in a very short time. We might be just 45 minutes from Manchester and Liverpool and 90 minutes from Birmingham. But this is a very different world.
Flintshire is still largely undiscovered. That’s a big part of its attraction. But our beautiful corner of North East Wales has a culture and an atmosphere all of its own.
Flintshire is neatly sandwiched between historic Chester to the east and Snowdonia, Llandudno, Conwy and Anglesey to the west. In other words, we’re the first bit of Wales experienced by thousands of visitors every year.
It also has a superb theatre and arts complex, magnificent medieval buildings and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Wales. Not to mention classic pubs, quirky shops and a warm Welsh welcome that comes as standard everywhere.
Many of them go hurtling on to better known, busier and, dare we say, more predictable destinations. Those in the know realise they’ve already arrived.
Plenty, in other words, to keep groups of all sorts busy – explorers, shoppers, heritage enthusiasts, foodies and culture buffs. It’s all just a few miles from the English border. But about a million miles from the norm.

what would you like to do today? No group’s the same. Some are thirsting for adventure. Some want to connect with history. Others just fancy a good haggle and a nice cream tea. Flintshire can provide all these things – plus a few others you might not have thought of.
go outdoors Flintshire is prime walking country and includes part of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Offa’s Dyke National Trail, Wat’s Dyke Way and the Wales Coast Path all pass through. Stop off at Gronant and Talacre Dunes to see the 17th century lighthouse. Visit the ancient woodland at Wepre Park or the famous limestone cliffs at Loggerheads Country Park. And if you want to make a whole weekend of it, try the Holywell Walking Festival in June.
4
explore the past Our heritage stretches back at least 2,500 years. But it’s a pretty stiff climb to the Iron Age hillfort of Penycloddiau. The medieval fortresses of Flint Castle and Ewloe Castle are easier to reach – so too the rich industrial remains of Greenfield Valley or Halkyn Mountain. Lovely St Winefride’s Well in Holywell has been a site of pilgrimage for 1,300 years. And Gladstone’s Library in Hawarden, although a relative newcomer, does look just like Hogwarts.
see a show Clwyd Theatr Cymru at Mold is the leading producing theatre in Wales, attracting luminaries such as Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Timothy Dalton and Rex Harrison over the years. It’s also a cinema, concert venue, exhibition space, restaurant and bookshop. Run by director Terry Hands, formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Clwyd Theatr Cymru offers world-class theatre in a distinctively rural setting. So there’s a jolly nice view from the bar too.
eat and drink Every day is a food festival in Flintshire. But one weekend in September we make it official. Mold Food and Drink Festival, a lively mix of food stalls, celebrity chef demos, children’s entertainment and local music, attracts 13,000 people every year. It’s a great place to meet some of our food heroes. Or search them out for yourself on the Clwydian Range Food Trail – including True Taste of Wales award-winner Caffi Florence at Loggerheads Country Park.
hunt a bargain Sometimes only a really good haggle will do. Fortunately Mold holds a twice-weekly street market, an indoor market and a farmers’ market. It even has a livestock market, just in case you’re looking for a new sheep. There are quirky independent stores all over Flintshire – and not just in the main shopping streets. Afonwen Craft and Antique Centre, Jackson’s Boutique Garden Centre and Abakhan Fabrics, Hobby and Home are all popular group destinations.
go for a drive Your journey to Flintshire won’t take long. So your group should be nice and fresh for a scenic drive around the county. The Flintshire Leisure Tour covers 83 beguiling miles of countryside, coastline, market towns and historic attractions. It’s broken into nine manageable sections, all marked with white-on-brown signs. Some of our country lanes can be winding and narrow so check out the route at: www.discoverflintshire.com

Flintshire isn’t very big – just 438 square kilometres as it happens. But we manage to pack plenty in.
Industrial Revolution and now the walking capital of Flintshire.
One of the loveliest protected landscapes in Britain, for example. A coastline that contains quiet sandy beaches and wildlife-rich ancient dunes. And a lot of heart.
Our hotels and country houses provide every luxury, from fluffy towels to state-of-the-art spas and free wi-fi. But they also offer something else. That rare commodity – a genuinely warm welcome.
Flintshire people are proud of their own particular contribution to Welsh history and culture. So proud they like to share their experiences and their insider knowledge. They like to let you know what makes the place special.
They make the perfect base from which to explore all the things you can see and do in Flintshire. Some of which are rather surprising. A tea rooms in a pet cemetery, for example. One of Britain’s best ice rinks. And the most haunted house in Wales.
Your groups will feel the difference in our market towns. In the “Slow Town” of Mold, for instance, where they’ve given up the global rat race to celebrate what’s local and unique – including the delicious food and drink.
All the hotels and attractions advertised in this guide are geared up for group bookings. Better still they offer a wide range of discounts, commissions and incentives for group travel organisers.
Or among the fine late Georgian and Victorian buildings of Holywell, one-time powerhouse of the
