THE OFFICIAL 2018 WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENT The Official 2018 White House Christmas Ornament honors the 33rd President Harry S. Truman and illustrates significant changes made to the White House during Truman’s administration, including his celebrated Truman Balcony, added in 1947–1948 to the South Portico. The reverse side features his renovated Blue Room, which, like all the rooms of the house, was dismantled and rebuilt during the renovation of 1948–1952.

The Presidential Seal featured at the top of the ornament reflects the design as changed by Truman. Originally the American eagle looked toward its left talons, which hold a cluster of spears, weapons of war.

Truman had the seal redesigned, turning the eagle’s head away from the spears to its right talons, which hold the olive branches of peace.

THE

On October 25, 1945, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9646, which officially defined the Presidential Coat of Arms and Seal. The eagle’s head, which originally faced a bundle of 13 arrows held in its left talons, was turned to face right toward the olive branches symbolizing peace.

C H R I S T M A S AT T H E W H I T E H O U S E The first Christmas celebration at the White House was held in December 1800 by President John Adams and his wife Abigail and granddaughter Suzannah. In 1889, President Harrison and his family brought the first Christmas tree to the residence, and electric tree lights arrived in the late 1890s. Generally, these White House Christmas celebrations were not grand public events but small family gatherings. In 1929, First Lady Lou Hoover established the tradition of decorating an official tree for the State Floor, and in 1961 First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy established the tradition of a themed Blue Room Christmas Tree.
