Steel

S teel The noblest of metals.

T H E M AT E R I A L

Steel is the name given to an iron alloy containing carbon. Its properties and uses are countless; without steel in large quantities and at low costs the Industrial Revolution would have been impossible. Simple and tough, perfect for everyday life, Steel enjoys a great tradition and has always played an irreplaceable role in the building sector. Most of all its far greater resistance to external stress than any of the other materials has allowed architects and designers to create buildings with more glass and therefore light, thanks to the slimmer yet sturdier window and door frames.

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N P R O C E S S Steel in the form of slabs or blooms are cold rolled into coils, which then go through the hot-dip galvanising process with the Sendzimir system, when they are coated with zinc on both sides to ensure a high protection against corrosive agents. The resulting strips are finished with a surface passivation and lastly cold rolled without removing the layer of zinc.

Stainless Steel As bright as light.

T H E M AT E R I A L

Stainless Steel is an iron alloy containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum, which was discovered in 1913 by the Englishman Harry Brearly and has the property of not rusting when exposed to the atmosphere. By varying the quantity of the alloying elements over 100 different types of Stainless Steel can be manufactured, each one offering different mechanical properties and corrosion resistance whereby all the production requirements of our industrial society can be satisfied. In addition to the structural properties it offers, Stainless Steel can also be given various types of polished or matt surface finishes to create the most suitable aesthetic effect for every type of environment; these properties have put Stainless Steel in the limelight of modern architecture.

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N P R O C E S S The billet produced by forging is cold rolled into coils of the required gauge and the surface is controlled. To guarantee the quality, uniformity and consistency of the finish, the strips are industrially pre-treated to obtain satin, Scotch-Brite or polished surface finishes. This is followed by cold forming of the material with the continuous application of an adhesive film to protect the finish.

Cor-Ten Steel

Cor-Ten Steel From the past, the Steel of the future.

T H E M AT E R I A L

Cor-Ten Steel is a high-tensile, self-passivating special alloy containing copper, chromium and phosphorus, which, as the name indicates, possesses considerable resistance to corrosion (Cor) and to tensile stress (Ten). A singular feature of Cor-Ten is its natural oxidation upon exposure to air, which instead of continuing to corrode the material, stops and forms an unchanging protective patina. These properties mean it can be used even in particularly corrosive or critical situations as testified to by its common use in architecture for monumental buildings and outdoor sculptures as well as for industrial applications such as bridge trestlework, guardrails and containers.

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N P R O C E S S The slab or bloom of Cor-Ten Steel is cold rolled to obtain coils with the required gauge, which are subsequently sheared and cold formed. The resulting products upon exposure to the air form an unchanging protective patina in a process that can last from one to four years, depending on the surroundings. Formation of the protective patina may be accelerated with a special process (oxidation, passivation and waxing) that, under natural but controlled conditions, gives the Steel its particular final finish very fast.

24

FINISH The “rust” finish of Cor-Ten Steel comes from the natural oxidation process, which, at the end of a period of stabilisation that can last from one to four years and during which chalking can occur, stops and forms a protective patina with an extraordinary aesthetic effect that remains the same for decades.

Bronzofinestra

Bronzofinestra A tradition of quality.

T H E M AT E R I A L

The name Bronzofinestra stands for an alloy containing 67% copper and 33% zinc, the main characteristic of which is its natural oxidation upon exposure to air. That is how the alloy acquires the typical finish of old Bronze, with a warm and elegant hue that is not the result of artificial colouring but of a natural chemical process of self-protection. Alloys of this type are the earliest material used by man to forge particularly superior weapons and tools, in the Renaissance period they were used to make the window and door frames of palaces and cathedrals and today in modern prestige buildings.

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N P R O C E S S The Bronzofinestra is processed to obtain rough cold-rolled coils, which are then sheared and cold formed. The resulting products undergo stress relieving so that season cracking (presence of residual internal stresses that could cause surface cracks) can be totally eliminated, thereby guaranteeing the structural strength and durability.

Like a modern Formula 1 racing car, building design and engineering must succeed in obtaining increasingly better performance despite increasingly severer restrictions. One of the greatest restrictions is compliance with the ecological and energy saving norms for buildings, which the modern building trade meets through thermal insulation. Secco Sistemi puts its designers in conditions to comply with these requirements in the window/door frame sector with the Ebe Thermal Break, in the 2 versions Ebe 65 and Ebe 85, which allows the insulation values laid down by the new and strict standards to be achieved. In addition to its special technology ensuring perfect insulation, Ebe Thermal Break is the only system that allows frames to be made with superior materials such as Galvanised Steel, Stainless Steel, Cor-Ten Steel and Copper Alloy whether alone or combined in the same frame, to ensure greater design and engineering freedom.

The performance of the Ebe Thermal-Break System, tested by the best European Certification Laboratories in accordance with the reference standard EN 14351-1, is more than adequate for being issued the EC certification for window/door frames.

In the Ebe Thermal Break the sections are bonded together using two materials: the first is a fibreglass reinforced extruded polyamide and the second a high-density polyurethane resin injected under high pressure, which firmly unite the two metal parts. This technology ensures continuous connection and consequent insulation with no gap in seal and guarantees maximum torsional and flexural strength.

· · · · · ·

Air, wind and water - the system for windows with weep and central gasket allows maximum performance values to be achieved up to class E1050 (1050 Pascal of pressure). Strength and durability - the use of approved fittings and the structural strength of the sections and joints ensure perfect operation for the whole envisaged lifecycle of scheduled use (opening/closing, torsional stress and yield). Sound insulation - the presence of seals and rebate gaskets plus the possibility of fitting very thick glass allow the design acoustic values to be achieved. Thermal insulation - the special system for joining the Steel shells without any thermal bridges results in heat transmission rates or U-values of up to 1.4 W/m2k. Bullet resistance - the specific configuration of the internal chambers allows ballistic Steel sheets to be inserted, which, depending on their thickness, allows the highest ballistic resistance to be achieved to standard EN 1522. Burglar resistance - thanks to the structurally sturdier frame, a simple change of hardware allows the system to meet high values of burglar resistance required by ENV 1627.

EBE

ADVANTAGES OF EBE IN GALVANISED STEEL

Better insulation for more slender frames The Ebe System in Galvanised Steel ensures best thermal insulation for slim yet structurally strong and totally distortion-free frames, the design of which would be impossible if it were not for steel.

Wide choice of finishes for old and new frames The possibility of finishing the frame surfaces with a wide choice of finishes and colours makes the Ebe System in Galvanised Steel the most popular choice either for replacing old steel frames in restoration work or for adding a touch of colour in modern surroundings.

Easy assembly The precise size of the sections ensuring perfect assembly of the frames by welding plus the simple way in which the system fittings are inserted into the special accessory groove make the fitter’s work easier.

FINISH: G A LVA N I S E D S T E E L Semi-finished or galvanised products, after further passivation, may be used in the natural state in environments that are not particularly aggressive.

FINISH: PA I N T E D G A LVA N I S E D S T E E L After the transformation process the semi-finished or finished product is given a finish in any of the RAL colours or special colours, through application of the pre-treatment-zinc salt phosphating-polyester powders cycle.

EBE

ADVANTAGES OF EBE IN STAINLESS STEEL

Better insulation and protection against external agents The Ebe System in Stainless Steel combines the high structural sturdiness and weathering resistance of Stainless Steel with the heat and sound insulating properties of the Ebe thermal break.

Three different finishes for more design freedom

FINISH: P O L I S H E D S TA I N L E S S S T E E L

The Ebe System in Stainless Steel hides its strength behind 3 different finishes: classic, well-defined and mirror-like Polished, Scotch-Brite obtained by light brushing that dims the surface shine and Satin obtained with stronger brushing resulting in a slightly rougher and darker feel. Three extra tools for extra design ideas.

Easy assembly The precise size of the sections ensures perfect frame composition by welding as well as faster construction by mechanical assembly. The “prefinished” sections (in Scotch-Brite, satin or polished finish protected by tear-off film) plus the simple way in which the system fittings are inserted into the special accessory groove also make the fitter’s work easier.

FINISH: SATIN-FINISH STAINLESS STEEL

Finish obtained on AISI 316L (marine) strip with surface finish 2R reflectivity 53% and suitable for a subsequent mirror polishing.

Finish obtained on AISI 304 strip with surface finish 2B and subsequent satin polish with 220-grain abrasives.

EBE

ADVANTAGES OF EBE IN COR-TEN STEEL

Better insulation and exclusive aesthetic values Frames in Ebe System in Cor-Ten Steel offer today’s designers an extra tool for innovation thanks to the use of Cor-Ten, a material that ensures outstanding aesthetic results, combined with the heat and sound insulation of the Ebe thermal break.

Structural sturdiness and corrosion resistance Apart from the uniqueness of its aesthetic features and higher structural strength, Cor-Ten also ensures 10 times more corrosion resistance than normal steels even in critical situations.

Easy assembly The precise size of the sections ensures perfect frame composition by welding as well as faster construction by mechanical assembly. The “prefinished” sections with oxidised finish plus the simple way in which the system fittings are inserted into the special accessory groove also make the fitter’s work easier.

FINISH The sections in Cor-Ten Steel may be supplied in their natural state or pre-oxidised with a protective patina, which shortens the time period when chalking could occur at the end of stabilisation.

Bronzofinestra SYSTEMS FOR THERMAL-BREAK FRAMES

50

|

EBE

ADVANTAGES OF EBE IN BRONZOFINESTRA

Better insulation and more structural strength The Ebe System in Bronzofinestra not only gives a typically warm and glowing colour of old Bronze but also better heat insulation to slim yet structurally strong frames whether used to defer to the historic and formal values of a work or for innovative solutions.

The colours of old Bronze and corrosion resistance The system is available in two different finishes, polished and burnished, which both ensure excellent performance when used even in hostile environments such as by the sea, given the high corrosion resistance.

Fittings and easy assembly The system fittings have been specially designed to avoid formation of a galvanic cell. The Bronzofinestra sections may be machined with the same equipment used for aluminium. The precise size of the sections ensures faster frame construction by mechanical assembly. The “prefinished” sections with burnished or polished finish plus the simple way in which the system fittings are inserted into the special accessory groove also make the fitter’s work easier

FINISH: BURNISHED BRONZOFINESTRA After the transformation process, the sections or finished materials undergo mechanical cleaning with abrasive and then burnishing by dipping in order to acquire the warm shade of old Bronze.

FINISH: POLISHED BRONZOFINESTRA After the transformation process, the sections or finished materials undergo mirror polishing, which gives the alloy its golden splendour.

INFINITIES HT

Infinities HT For a new architectural look.

Cor-Ten Steel Infinities High Technology is a new composite system in Cor-Ten Steel for the cladding of buildings and offers Designers extraordinary up-to-the-minute technical and aesthetic features. The basic elements of the system are slats up to 6 metres long, height 330 mm and thickness 46 mm, with high insulating properties, made up of two sections: the external one in the superior metals of Secco Sistemi or in personalised finishes and the other in Galvanised Steel, joined together by two extruded polyamide elements as well as a polyurethane foam core. The Infinities HT System has been studied for all types of application and also encompasses the use of adjustable sub-structures, gaskets and accessories for sealing and alignment.

72

T H E T E C H N O LO G I C A L S Y S T E M

The ventilated façade system Infinities HT is technologically suitable for new buildings as well as for the upgrading in energy terms of existing envelopes so that heat flows between the interior and exterior in both summer and winter are optimized. The main benefits from installing the system are:

·· · ·

Superior finish - the external cladding has a strong aesthetic and architectural impact. Energy efficiency - the thermal performance of the envelope is increased through the interaction between insulation and natural ventilation. Technological quality - the system guarantees excellent features of durability, reliability and versatility of use. Solar energy - by inserting photovoltaic panels it is possible to generate renewable electricity.

Outside

The Infinities HT faรงade with dynamic operation benefits from the versatile performance offered by the upper and lower adjusting louvers, whereby the flow through the cavity can be modulated. In winter the thermal resistance of the wall is improved, thereby considerably reducing the heat loss to the exterior. In summer the air flow circulating naturally in the ventilated gap removes the heat coming from the exterior, thereby increasing the protective function of the insulating layer. The ventilation also prevents condensation from forming.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE

As an alternative to the Cor-Ten Steel-faced composite panels, the external finish of the ventilated faรงade can include solar laminates for the production of electricity. The modules that are used have cells in amorphous silicon offering 6 and 10% efficiency and, if built into a south-facing faรงade, can produce approximately 45-65 kWh/m2 a year, depending on the available solar radiation in the site of installation (referring to Italian meteorological data).

The Infinities HT system with external finish in Cor-Ten Steel or solar laminate offers considerable benefits in terms of energy, as is clear upon comparing the relative performance with those of a standard concrete wall. It can be seen that application of the system in either version (opaque or solar) leads to a significant reduction in heat loads whether during heating or cooling.

The new fire safety concept based on fire engineering, in which the project engineer calculates the “specific fire curve” and envisages the fire ignition scenario, will in many cases encourage the use of classes E and EW, which can offer perfectly adequate technical safety at moderate cost. The Fuoco products EW60 and EW90 can be recommended, for example, in cases where no contact is envisaged between the window/door and flammable materials or where the escape routes are particularly wide. Fuoco provides the designer with all the products necessary for designing a complete building, including the plan of fire doors made up of different classes yet alike in terms of aesthetics and architecture.

Security 20/10 Steel for extreme performance.

Galvanised Steel Situations can arise that are outside normal limits and require what seems an impossible effort to overcome what seems an insuperable obstacle. The same principle also applies for materials: solutions that are valid for 99% of problems suddenly come up against the unexpected, the exception. In such cases it is indispensable to be able to rely on a tool to overcome normal limits. In the sphere of steel frames this tool is Security, the 20/10 steel for extreme performance.

An innovative material for outstanding aesthetic results Designing means innovating. Frames made with SistemAcciaio in Cor-Ten Steel give designers an extra tool for innovation because they can use a material that is little known as yet, but which is safe, having being fully tested, and ensures outstanding aesthetic results.

Slimmer sections with 10 times more corrosion resistance The greater corrosion resistance of Cor-Ten, over 10 times that of other types of steel, means that larger glazed areas with particularly slender sections can be constructed even in critical situations.

Easy assembly The precise size of the sections ensures perfect frame composition by welding as well as faster construction by mechanical assembly. The “prefinished sections with oxidised finish plus the simple way in which the system fittings are inserted into the special accessory groove also make the fitter’s work easier.

FINISH The sections in Cor-Ten Steel may be supplied in their natural state or pre-oxidised with a protective patina, which shortens the time period when chalking could occur at the end of stabilisation.

Respect for historical values and the latest technology In Italy, where 70% of Europe’s works of art and historical buildings are to be found, SistemAcciaio in Bronzofinestra is the material of choice when the historic and formal values of a work must be respected, because it combines the latest technological quality with traditional values.

The colours of old Bronze and corrosion resistance SistemAcciaio in Bronzofinestra is available in two different finishes, polished and burnished, which both ensure excellent performance for use even in hostile environments such as by the sea, given the high corrosion resistance.
