OUR LITTLE SISTER February 22

KONELINE: OUR BEAUTIFUL LAND March 29

Ben Cash, his wife Leslie and their six children live deep in the wilderness of Washington state and isolated from society. When Leslie dies suddenly, Ben must take his sheltered offspring into the outside world for the first time.

Three sisters live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their estranged father dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral and meet their shy teenage half-sister. Bonding quickly with the orphaned Suzu, they invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and a new life of joyful discovery begins for the four siblings.

The Tahltan First Nation call their land Koneline meaning our land beautiful and our mind beautiful, weaving human consciousness with the health of the land. Mining companies call the territory the golden triangle, while hunting outfitters refer to it as Canada’s Serengeti. Nettie Wild has crafted a breathtaking love letter that captures the majestic beauty of the land and the unique people who live on it.

The White Rock Subway If you stand on the promenade opposite Elm Street you’ll see a large concrete block imbedded in the south side of the railway bed. Have you ever wondered what that is? A clue to its history is that Elm Street used to be called ‘Subway Avenue’. When the railway was first built along White Rock beach disputes quickly arose between the railway company and local residents about the number, and quality of crossings over the railway to get to the beach. In 1912 the Railway Commission ordered Great Northern Railway to build a crossing at Elm Street. They chose to construct a tunnel under the tracks (as opposed to a level crossing like the one at the pier). It was known as the Subway, and for that reason Elm Street was originally named Subway Avenue, until 1918 when Elm trees were planted nearby and the name was changed to Elm Street. The southern entrance to the tunnel can still be seen, though it’s covered with a metal plate. The north side was covered by the promenade and parking lot construction in the mid 1990s. PHOTOS: From top, Looking north, through the Subway to the corner of Elm Street and Marine Drive in 1920. Her summer cottage was on Elm Street, just through the Subway which can be seen in the background; Belle Hood and a soldier friend on White Rock Beach in 1916. The Subway is in the background.

Jumpstart Charities gives kids a sporting chance. Kids aged 4 to 18 years from families in financial need can receive funding to help with registration fees. Participating in sport helps kids develop physical and social skills. It helps build self-esteem. By helping kids get into the game, we’re equipping them with determination. And we’re giving them confidence.

Does my child qualify? Families must meet financial need criteria in order to qualify for Jumpstart funding. Jumpstart follows Revenue Canada’s Low Income Cut-offs (LICOs) which are based on a family’s size, the size of their community and the total family unit income (before tax).

Where do I apply? Jumpstart funding application forms are available online at www.whiterockcity.ca and at each of our recreation centres: White Rock Community Centre (15154 Russell Ave.)

Cost: $149 up to 20 children
