“I rely on memories that are triggered by my sons’ little milestones for my imagery. I love a lovely canvas but sometimes I paint straight to board, beacuse I can’t wait. My style comes from the small space of time I have to apply the paint to canvas- my boys are always with me so I have to throw it on fast and get it out there. That also influences my choice of medium- often I have to use acrylic simply because it dries fast and I can layer easily. I have a feeling oils may creep into my life soon...”

Can you describe your childhood? I was encouraged to enjoy every minute of it and was supported creatively while at the same time we all had to deal with awful divorce issues. I had love from every direction and a big extended family. There was always lots of laughter and music.
3 What inspire you to create art?
2 What made you decided to move to Tasmania from Qld?
My kids inspire me, as in, I have to earn money to feed them! But aside from that it is just a 24 hour craving for a release of creativity. I analyze kids’ shows and dissect what makes them so appealing and apply it to canvas in an adult form.
I came to Tasmania via Melbourne which I just kind of drifted into with friends from Brisbane. I loved living in Melbourne but partied a little bit too much so I sought the solace of Tasmania and never left. It was supposed to be short term...

Throughout the time of your study, have you had a difficult time developing your own style? Yes! I stuffed up my study three times! I never thought I was good enough, so I just wasted it. It’s only been since Louie was born 2 years ago that I’ve had to apply the medium and step away fast and that’s what has created my style.

Tell us more about your art.. I feel pattern in visual works speak to us all on a primitive level. That’s why it hits us in the tummy when we see gorgeous fabric and such. I like to make a big mess then clean up the edges.

What is the biggest challenge of being an (emerging) artist these days? Self promotion can be hard and I do alot of it, even though it really goes against the grain. It works though. You have to keep on top of it, not expecting your galleries to do it all for you.

Here are some words from Amy of Pikaland that I like... ‘Ever looked at child-inspired art that’s well, grown up? Take a look at Kate McCarthy’s work and you’ll see what I mean. Inspired by early childhood memory of pure shape, color and intent, Kate’s managed to dissect the colorful (and sometimes fleeting) world of play into a 2D interpretation mixed media work with a spot of humor thrown in. I could detect a hint of innocence in her works, and also a sense of wonder as she wields her brush – I love the playfulness that shines through!’

Fleur
It all began in spontaneous agreement between Visual Artists Fleur MacDonald and James P Gilmour while they were at Tim Olsen Gallery in June 2009. They agreed there was room for a blog to cover openings without the art speak and 209 posts later they are still going strong... They try not to review BUT they do have opinions...
Fleur MacDonald has been exhibiting since 1985 with 11 Solos and over 50 Group shows under her belt, has work in private and commercial collections all over the world... Hung in the Gallipoli Art Prize, (3 times), Mosman Art Prize, BBC and the Churchie Emerging Art Award... Working mainly in oils as a landscape painter, her last show in August 2010 was of objects in Gouache... A passionate art collector and considers herself to be an Ambassador to the Arts...
James P Gilmour is a Sydney based artist making artists books, watercolours, encaustic paintings and plotting large scale projects that sometimes get off the ground... His work is in many collections including Monash University, Mitchell Library, British Art Library, Fremantle City Council and the Art Gallery of NSW (just to name a few). He's been hung in the Archibald and the Wynne and at one point had paintings on every continent in the world, including Antarctica..

Welcome to our first time here. We get around and see lot’s of shows and there’s been some standouts in the last two months. Numero uno this time must be Daniel Mudie Cunningham’s video “Rhymes With Failure” at MOP Projects. Such a sensitive piece, Lady Macquarie sat at her cut sandstone chair each afternoon and played her cello ... Daniel plays a cut out cardboard cello with a woman’s head at the same place and it was mesmorising ... and we never realized before that Australia rhymes with failure! Matt Glenn’s show at James Dorahy Project Space was the next treat. From the the last show we saw to this one ... a total transformation and thanks to the grant people at Ozco ... the works were so well presented, they are framed to the inch of their lives ... This was Coney Island meets Ivan Millat ... beautifully polished mirror images with the knowledge that what you are playing with was in the way of a 0.38 calibre bullet ... >>

Then there was Juz Kitson at Flinders Street Gallery. Where do we start... These works were so beautiful, fragile, sensual and grotesque at the same time... Southern Ice Porcelain a magnificent stark white clay that attains its translucency was the star attraction... Delicate furls of clay finely attached by the most nimble of fingers... Animal hair, wax, lace, flocking, glass, cotton, bone, resin and ink made up these amazing pieces that are quite beyond description... A graduate of the National Art School Juz produced a gobsmackingly almost shocking exhibition... Pieces to entice you and pieces to revolt you, of almost slightly altered internal body parts and flora... And last but not least... John A.Douglas at Chalk Horse Strangeland, it is indeed a strange land, within this stark spooky landscape John captures the sought after mood perfectly and the attention to detail is paramount... And with the help of a strong supporting cast, Sari T.M.Kivinen and Liam Benson and the beautiful haunting soundtrack by Debra Petrovich and not to forget a mention for their technical support Melanie Ryan and Matt Cuneo... John’s work reminds us of a Dennis Hopper film... It is dramatic, violent, powerful, scary and just plain brilliant... << Sixtoeight

Your works seem to be very narrative, is there story behind each of them? Yeah, I love narratives and story telling. Although I create each image with a specific narrative in mind. I prefer that the narrative is ambiguous forcing the viewer to unities their own emotions and experiences to unravel a meaning or story behind each image.
What is your background? I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. I studied photography at Massey University in Wellington and then went straight into creating campaigns for advertising agencies. A year and a bit later I moved over to Melbourne and began creating images to exhibit.
2 When did you start falling in love with photography? I found a panoramic camera in Wanaka whilst chasing the winter dream. I felt a little bad that a family lost some of their holiday snaps but I fell in love with taking pictures of friends and landscapes and what started as a hobby has now grown into an obsession for creating images.

What is the biggest challenge of being an (emerging) artist these days? For me its struggle of putting weetbix on the table whilst putting every last dollar into creating images. I wouldn’t have it any other way though and thankfully I have an amazingly supportive family and friends.
Tell us more about your art.. My last series “Wander and Wonder” is a series of childhood narratives that explores imagination and navigating the grey area between what’s right and wrong whilst growing up.

What are your upcoming plans for your artist career? I’m currently in the middle of creating two new series which I’m really excited about. As for the future I just want to continually push myself creativity, exhibit around the world and hopefully inspire other people to create.

If you had to pick a song to represent your art, which song would you choose? I’m not too sure if this song represents my art but its been on heavy rotation on my crackly car stereo. Its called Young Bloods by a damn good New Zealand band called The Naked and The Famous, and it just makes me yearn for summer road trips and finding new locations to take pictures in.

We tend to dream and imagine about things that are non-sense or non-existing. In this brutal society we always need to find a way to survive, aperhaps sometimes fantasies and imape ginations are the ways for us to escape from the reality and fall into our “wonderlands”

“ I have always had a keen interest in art, I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil and started painting at the end of high school. I am self-taught artist, inspired by people, colour, music and life experiences. Over the last few years I have enjoyed experimenting with different mediums and styles; from acrylic on canvas, ink, coloured pencil and more recently painting on wood panels and murals.
I can’t seem to settle into just one style and hope to continue to grow and develop different techniques over time. My work varies from realistic portraiture and figurative work through to stylized illustrations. Some of the work is dark and moody, while other pieces are vibrant and energetic.

What are you working on at the moment? Recently I have been creating portraits by dripping paint onto canvas to produce stylised imagery . I am working on developing this technique though experimenting with mixed media to add another dimension to this new style.
Upcoming plan for the year 2011? In the last two years I have had four solo shows and have contributed to eighteen group shows. In 2011, I plan to continue in taking part in group shows with my fellow artists and hopefully building on a new body of work to display in another solo show.

What are you working on at the moment? At the moment i am working on a series of paintings that explore the human animal and the automatic responses we have to physical and emotional stimuli. I find it quite interesting that these base traits that have allowed us to evolve to this point are also changing with the demands of a wider social structure.
