Great City Plans VISIONS AND EVOLUTION THROUGH THE AGES Kevin J. Brown, Spencer D. Hunt This book is an overview of plans and maps of great cities all over the world. It follows the development of the city plan from its earliest stages in the Renaissance, through the Enlightenment, to the colonial city, the Grand Tour, Asian cities, the Industrial Revolution, gold rush and frontier cities, the administrative city plan, and finally the modern pictorial city map. Each map will be accompanied by a textual description of the map placing it within its historical, political, social, and/or economic context. While the work will cover many of the world’s great cities, the book will revolve around a loose group of anchor cities with a long mapping heritage, such as New York, London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Rome, and others, that will appear repeatedly as the book progresses through different styles and eras of the urban plan. This will enable to readers to better understand how the city plan has changed over time as well as how these great cities have changed. KEVIN J. BROWN A rare map dealer based in Brooklyn, New York, he is the owner of Geographicus Rare Antique Maps, one of the largest and most active fi rms specializing in antiquarian cartography in the United States. He has dealt with countless rare maps from all periods covering all regions. SPENCER D. HUNT has earned two Master of Arts degrees: one from New York University in French Studies and the other from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in French Literature, where he taught beginning French. He also received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska with majors in History and French language. After deciding that a life in academia was not the best fit for him, Spencer joined Geographicus in 2017 and has brought a passion for history to the business. Vintage Board Games HISTORY AND ENTERTAINMENT FROM THE LATE 18TH TO THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY Adrian Seville The printed board game reached new heights of beauty and ingenuity during the nineteenth century. The century began with a golden age for upmarket board games, finely engraved and often with glowing hand-colour. But these expensive games faced competition from the new process of lithography and by the end of the century mass produced games from the steam-press were flooding a European-wide market. There were games on almost every conceivable theme, whether on serious subjects like geography or history, or on the crazes of the moment. The games often relied on dice or a numbered spinning top called a teetotum, with no choice of move. Nowadays, the fascination of these games lies not in playing them but in seeing how they reflect the specific cultures of different times and places. This book presents examples of all these genres. It is interesting to see how the focus of the games changed over the century. ADRIAN SEVILLE is an international expert on the cultural history of printed board games and has lectured widely on his research, both in Europe and America. He studied at Cambridge and Edinburgh universities before joining the staff of City University, London, where he was Academic Registrar. His New York exhibition of board games at the Grolier Club in 2016 was described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘a mind-opening cultural event’. Vintage Board Games 208 PAGES 27.5 X 31.5 CM £30.00

The World in Print THE HISTORY OF ADVERTISING POSTERS FROM THE LATE 19TH CENTURY TO THE 1940S David Rymer The lowly placard, a quick and efficient device used to spread news or advertise goods, ascended to the level of a respected art form in the late 1800’s in France. The ‘art poster’ was born at the convergence of new aesthetic movements, technological advances and societal changes. Fine artists were swayed from their lofty perches to join the practical arts, influenced by the egalitarian spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement. Artist Jules Cheret, “Father of the Modern Poster,” perfected a means of high-quality printing that produced large, colour saturated images. An emerging middle class was the ready target for the consumption of newly manufactured goods, literary publications, theatrical events and leisure time entertainment. A sea of gorgeous images added a “joie de vivre” to everyday life, introducing a period of French life now know as the Belle Epoque. These posters, although ephemeral in intent, have been collected and continually reproduced over the subsequent decades, a testament to their timeless beauty and emotional depth. This book chronicles the influence of the art poster in France and its rapid spread across Europe and United States and offers to the readers an artist’s poster tour of the development of the art poster. DAVID RYMER is an Australian fiction and nonfiction author and a freelance writer expert in History of Fine Art and Graphic Design. He holds a Masters of Fine Art in Design and a Masters degree in Business &Technology from Australia’s leading university, the University of New South Wales and a BA in Mass Communication from Macquarie University. He has written different articles and biography on the most important artist and painters of the Belle Époque and other art movement. He has staged art and cultural exhibitions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on behalf of the UAE Department of Art & Culture, Mubadala andthe Department of Executive Affairs. He designed corporate identity, packaging, exhibit and print design for his clients; has reviewed exhibitions at Art Dubai and Art Abu Dhabi for the past years. Shangri-La A WONDERFUL JOURNEY ALONG THE TEA ROAD TO LASHA Michael Yamashita, Elizabeth Bibb The legendary Chamagudao, the Tea-Horse Road, winds through dizzying mountain passes, across famed rivers like the Mekong and the Yangtze and past monasteries and meadows in a circuitous route from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces in western China to the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa. Actually a network of roads, trails and highways, rather than one distinct route, the Chamagudao once stretched for almost 1,400 miles (2350 km) – a conduit along which the historic trade between the mighty Chinese Empire and the nomadic Tibetans linked remote villages and ethnic groups. The Chinese military needed strong horses for their wars against Mongol invaders from the north, and the fiercely religious Tibetans desired tea both for sacred rituals and sustenance. Following the Chamagudao, this book is a rare and enchanting look into the changing world of Tibet – both ancient and modern, sacred and secular, the rarefied and the gritty – before the legends and mysteries of the Tea-Horse Road disappear into the Tibetan mist. MICHAEL YAMASHITA has been a regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine since 1979. He has received several industry awards, including those from the National Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year, the New York Art Directors Club, and the Asian-American Journalists Association. ELIZABETH BIBB is a writer and editor who works in both magazine and book publishing. Bibb is a frequent collaborator with her husband, photographer Michael Yamashita. Chocolate Sommelier A JOURNEY THROUGH THE CULTURE OF CHOCOLATE Clara and Gigi Padovani, photographs by Fabio Petroni Once used as currency by the Mayans and Aztecs, chocolate has ancient roots. Considered the “food of the gods”, associated to the goddess of fertility Xochiquetzal, it was consumed as a virtuous drink by rulers, warriors and noblemen. Today, there is an infinite variety of chocolate, which can be found soft or hard, glossy or opaque, sweet or bitter. This volume, illustrated by the photographs of the still-life expert Fabio Petroni, will take you on a journey to discover this extraordinary food eaten by millions of people all over the world every day. From the origins of cocoa cultivation to the secrets of the harvest and drying of the beans under the sun, all the way to the art of the processing, immersing you in different flavours and scents and revealing all the possible variations of it. The volume ends with some original recipes using chocolate as a protagonist even in the kitchen. CLARA AND GIGI PADOVANI, food historians and gastronomic storytellers, have been called the “chocolate couple” of Italian food writing: they have written about thirty books, translated into six languages. Clara Vada Padovani, already a professor of mathematics, is passionate about the history of cooking and is a gastronomic critic. Gigi Padovani, worked as a professional journalist at La Stampa newspaper for thirty years. He now works with a number of newspapers; already a gastronomic critic for the L’Espresso restaurant guide, he is now part of the National Studies Center of the Italian Academy of Cooking. Great Events that Changed Our Lives THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS FROM 1950 TO THE PRESENT Alfredo Luìs Somoza Some events more than others have changed the pace and determined the direction that history has taken along its rugged path. Inconsistencies that are not always clearly evident occur much more frequently when the events of humanity speed up. Such was the case in the mid-twentieth century. This book is dedicated to precisely those key events in our time; it uses a rich array of iconography to retrace what were to be the points of no return, the developments that would suddenly change the lives of many human beings. This book revisits the greatest events in recent history – from the Korean War that marked the beginning of the Cold War to the various revolutions of 1968, from conquering the moon to the birth of the internet, from the introduction of the Euro to the meeting for denuclearization between President Trump and the North Korean leader, Kim Jongun. Reliving the events makes it easier to understand the reasons and the origins of many of the milestones of contemporary history. ALFREDO LUÍS SOMOZA is a journalist and anthropologist. He has written many texts concerning international politics. He has worked with Radio Popolare, Radio Vaticana, Radio Svizzera Italiana and Radio Capodistria. He is the director of the online magazine dialoghi.info and of the webradio Young Radio. He is the president of the Institute for International Economic Cooperation in Milan and was one of the founders of the Italian Association of Responsible Tourism (AITR). He teaches master’s courses in various universities and blogs for the Huffington Post. Great Events that Changed Our Lives 224 PAGES 24.2 X 28.5 CM £25.00

The Beatles 1962-1969 FROM LIVERPOOL TO ABBEY ROAD Ernesto Assante The 1960s: When Europe’s youth broke onto the 1960s cultural scene they provoked a veritable revolution the effects of which can still be felt today. The Beatles were the stars of the show. More than fifty years have gone by since the group lit the fuse under some fundamental hotbeds of cultural renewal but those fires are still burning and still contributing substantially to today’s collective imagination. It may seem obvious but it is important to stress that the “Fab Four” literally revolutionized music. Not only did the shape of pop music change with the Beatles its contents and meaning was also profoundly altered. In other words, in just a few years – starting in 1963, the year they recorded their first album – the Beatles changed the world. Their adventure together ended with the recording of Abbey Road, exactly fifty years ago, in 1969. We would like to tell their story, year by year, through a collection of events, anecdotes, stories and songs. Because their legend lives on in all of us today. The Beatles are in our DNA. ERNESTO ASSANTE correspondent for La Repubblica newspaper, is a music critic, author and radio and television host. Together with Gino Castaldo, he presents a program called Playlist on Radio Capital and another called Webnotte on Repubblica TV. He has written a number of books published by White Star. Info Rock THE HISTORY OF ROCK MUSIC Ernesto Assante, illustrations by Giulia De Amicis At the crossroads between graphics, information and history there lies infographic: a type of narration that, in recent years, with the rapid growth of the web and its language, has undergone some interesting developments. The idea of this book is to tell the visual story of rock through news, history, story and music links, figures, facts, happenings and sounds using graphics. A sort of “family tree” is used to illustrate the history of different musical genres and their evolution, the influences and connections between styles. Using infographics, the reader has a clear, visual representation of the highlights of a musical adventure, a record, a celebrity, a season, etc., at a glance and with the speed that digital communications require, but also with the acuity of complete and thorough information. So, it is something to see that offers something to learn through something to play with. GIULIA DE AMICIS Since completing her masters in communication design in 2012, Giulia has been working as a visual designer and illustrator. Her work mainly focuses on the display of information for newspapers, magazines and the environmental sector, with a particular interest in marine ecology, geography and human rights. Concept Cars NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Larry Edsall “Are we there yet?” A question very familiar to parents traveling with children in the car. But it also is a question anxiously being asked by drivers and their passengers during what we keep hearing is this transitional time of personalized, automotive transportation. Once we get there, we’re told, our cars will be driving themselves. All we’ll need to do is to tell the vehicle where we desire to be and then ride along as we are whisked along in a vehicle that emits no pollution, nor will it crash because it will be in constant communication with all the vehicles around it. We aren’t there yet, but those who produce our vehicles assure us that we are getting closer. One of the ways they make such assurances is to give us glimpses of that future in the form of concept or “dream” cars, 3-dimensional previews of where they see “there” to be. Such blending of design and engineering has accelerated in the 21st Century as auto-makers seek to inspire customers with styling that can range from purely practical, small but roomy vehicles, to those that are sleek and sexy, but all of them showcasing technology designed to make driving safer, cleaner, and even more fun. LARRY EDSALL, a specialist automobile journalist, has worked for 12 years for AutoWeek Magazine, the most prestigious American weekly dedicated to automobiles. During his career, he has covered the most important motoring events and tested a wide range of vehicles around the world, driving prototypes and production cars for well over half a million miles. For White Star he wrote Concept Cars and Legendary Cars. Concept Cars 224 PAGES 27 X 31 CM £25.00
