Vespa

The History of a Legend from its Origin to the Present Text by Stefano Cordara and Valerio Boni The new official book approved by Piaggio about the myth of Vespa. When the Vespa debuted in 1946, it was received with an air of skepticism. It was not a motorcycle but rather a vehicle born from the union between a car and an airplane. But it soon became a success. It was the first two-wheeled version of the “compact” and responded perfectly to the post-war need for mobility. It has also become famous for its unique design that many have tried to imitate; it truly is an icon. The Vespa is not just any scooter, it is THE scooter, known and loved all over the world. It is a rare example of a motor vehicle that has survived trends and crises. It is a time machine that lets us re-live some of the world’s most exclusive moments of the last 72 years. From history to sports and from cinema to travel, this book’s anecdotes and images, some of which have never been published before, narrate the neverending evolution of a piece of Italy that has conquered all five continents and sold over 18 million vehicles.

The World in Prints

The History of Vintage Posters from Artwork to the Modern Techniques Text by David Rymer The lowly placard, a quick and efficient device used to spread news or advertise goods, ascended to the level of a respected art form in the late 1800s in France. The ‘art poster’ was born at the convergence of new aesthetic movements, technological advances and societal changes. Fine artists were swayed from their lofty perches to join the practical arts, influenced by the egalitarian spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement. Artist Jules Cheret, “Father of the Modern Poster,” perfected a means of highquality printing that produced large, color saturated images. An emerging middle class was the ready target for the consumption of newly manufactured goods, literary publications, theatrical events and leisure time entertainment. A sea of gorgeous images added a “joie de vivre” to everyday life, introducing a period of French life now know as the Belle Époque. These posters, although ephemeral in intent, have been collected and continually reproduced over the subsequent decades, a testament to their timeless beauty and emotional depth. This book collects all the most beautiful vintage posters across Europe and United States. 240 pp 255 x 333 mm hardcover with jacket

Vintage Board Games

A Journey Through Games Of The Nineteenth Century Text by Adrian Seville The printed board game reached new heights of beauty and ingenuity during the nineteenth century. The century began with a golden age for up-market board games, finely engraved and often with glowing hand-colour. But these expensive games faced competition from the new process of lithography and by the end of the century mass produced games from the steam-press were flooding a European-wide market. There were games on almost every conceivable theme, whether on serious subjects like geography or history, or on the crazes of the moment. Nowadays, the fascination of these games lies not in playing them but in seeing how they reflect the specific cultures of different times and places. This book presents examples of all the genres. It is interesting to see how the focus of the games changed over the century. These games cleverly use pictures to convey their message, as do the many advertising games that began to appear towards the end of the century. 208 pp 275 x 315 mm hardcover with jacket

Great City Plans

Visions and evolution through the Ages Text by Kevin J. Brown This book is an overview of plans, maps, and occasionally mapviews of great cities all over the world. It follows the development of the city plan from its earliest stages in the Renaissance, through the Enlightenment, to the colonial city, the Grand Tour, Asian cities, the Industrial Revolution, gold rush and frontier cities, the administrative city plan, and finally the modern pictorial city map. Each map will be accompanied by a textual description of the map placing it within its historical, political, social, and economic context. In addition, we will also include short biographies of the cartographers who produced each map highlighting their contributions to cartography. The book will revolve around a loose group of anchor cities with a long mapping heritage, such as New York, London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Rome, and others, that will appear repeatedly as the book progresses through different styles and eras of the urban plan. This will enable the readers to better understand how the city plan has changed over time as well as how these great cities have changed. 208 pp 275 x 315 mm hardcover with jacket

Kevin attended Bennington College, in Vermont, where he majored in “Pilgrimage.” Bennington fosters a “learn by doing” approach to academics, and Kevin has translated this philosophy to the map trade. He approaches his study of early cartography from a hands-on perspective, supplementing historical knowledge and the study of primary source material with visceral experience. Kevin believes that a better understanding of the challenges that early surveyors, mapmakers, and travelers would have faced, on a multifaceted personal level, contributes to his ability to appreciate and relate to the early maps he deals with.

The Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage

Cultural Practices and Expressions of our Legacy Edited by Massimo Centini What do the Great Wall of China, Georgia’s polyphonic singing, the Mediterranean diet and the Vanuatu sand drawings have in common? Despite their evident dissimilarity, they are all protected by UNESCO, the supranational organization that is responsible for preserving the common cultural heritage of humanity, protecting it from disappearance and ensuring its conservation for future generations. In 2003 the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has been adopted by the Unesco General Conference with the intent to safeguard the traditional cultures and folklore of our planet. Today, over 400 practices and expressions from more than 100 countries represent the riches and demonstrate the cultural diversity of the populations in the world. Appearing on this variegated list of traditions are the art of the “pizzaiuoli” – the pizza makers of Naples –, the Carnival of Basel, the Rebetiko music of Greece, Japanese kabuki theater, Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration, the Brazilian capoeira. The Beatles 1962-1969

The Years that changed the World Text by Ernesto Assante The 1960s. When Europe’s youth broke onto the 1960s cultural scene they provoked a veritable revolution the effects of which can still be felt today. The Beatles were the stars of the show. They revolutionized customs, fashion, images, writing and language. They pushed legions of creative talents to express themselves with originality in the worlds of cinema, literature and art. They made skirts shorter and hair longer. Society changed because the Beatles took youth – a social category that was virtually inexistent before the group’s arrival on the scene – and put it center stage. It may seem obvious but it is important to stress that the “Fab Four” literally revolutionized music. Not only did the shape of pop music change with the Beatles its contents and meaning were also profoundly altered. In other words, in just a few years the Beatles changed the world. Their adventure together ended with the recording of “Abbey Road”, exactly fifty years ago, in 1969. We would like to tell their story, year by year, through a collection of events, anecdotes, stories and songs. Because their legend lives on in all of us today. The Beatles are in our DNA. 208 pp 212 x 258 mm hardcover

Info Rock

The history of rock music Text by Ernesto Assante - Illustrations Giulia De Amicis At the crossroads between graphics, information and history there lies infographic, a type of narration that, in recent years, with the rapid growth of the web and its language, has undergone some interesting developments. The idea of this book is to tell the visual story of rock through news, history, story and music links, figures, facts, happenings and sounds using graphics. A sort of “family tree” is used to illustrate the history of different musical genres and their evolution, the influences and connections between styles. Using infographics, the reader has a clear, visual representation of the highlights of a musical adventure, a record, a celebrity, a season at a glance and with the speed that digital communications require, but also with the acuity of complete and thorough information. So, it is something to see that offers something to learn through something to play with.

C215

#Christianguemy the stencil master Text by Alessandra Mattanza

224 pp 235 x 305 mm hardcover with jacket

“I’ve never made my art because I want to make money. I make it because I believe that my paintings in the street can change the world.” These are the words of C215, the pseudonym chosen by the French artist, Christian Guémy, one of the biggest masters of contemporary street art. Readers will get to know him in this book through a series of long interviews conducted by Alessandra Mattanza, an expert in the international world of street art. His art is not only visual and its aim is not that of directly provoking political or social criticism, it goes straight to the heart in a triumph of feelings. C215 became famous in 2008, when Banksy invited him to work together on some projects and today, even though he has the possibility of working for galleries or museums, he continues producing his art on the street. He is considered the biggest stencil artist of the moment and has been producing his art for more than 20 years; drawing, painting, spray-painting and personally photographing his works. And, in fact, the photos taken by C215 enrich this intimate portrait of the artist, presenting his vision and his experience on the street. Explaining his passion for street art, C215 says, “A museum is for conserving, the street devours, transforms, destroys… The street is more like life itself in the end. Maybe that’s why I like it so much.” The book, with stunning and exclusive pictures, shows his work around the world: Paris, London, Los Angeles, New York, Rome, Istanbul, New Delhi and Fez as well as in Brazil, Poland, Israel and Morocco. Alessandra Mattanza, writer, screenwriter, and fine art photographer, has lived in New York and Los Angeles for a number of years. At the moment, she works as a foreign correspondent, contributor, and editor for several publishing houses and magazines; she collaborates on interviews and mini-documentaries for TV Studio Universal. She obtained third place in the category “nonfiction books” at the 56th SoCal Journalism Awards in Los Angeles. White Star has published, in the same series, her “My New York”, “My Paris” and “Street Art: Famous Artists Talk about their Vision.”

Concept Cars

Style and Technology for the Future Text by Larry Edsall

224 pp 270 x 310 mm hardcover with jacket

“Are we there yet?” is a question anxiously being asked by drivers and their passengers during what we keep hearing is this transitional time of personalized, automotive transportation. Once we get there, we’re told, our cars will be driving themselves. All we’ll need to do is to tell the vehicle where we desire to be and then ride along as we are whisked along in a vehicle that emits no pollution, nor will it crashes because it will be in constant communication with all the vehicles around it. We aren’t there yet, but those who produce our cars and trucks and sport utilities and station wagons and who know what sort of vehicle is yet to be unveiled assure us that we are getting closer. One of the reasons they make such assurances is to give us glimpses of that future in the form of concept or “dream” cars, 3-dimensional previews of where they see “there” to be. But more than shapes designed to draw our attention, these dream cars are just as much, perhaps even more so, about technological advancements. Such blending of design and engineering has accelerated in the 21st Century as automakers seek to inspire customers with styling that can range from purely practical, small but roomy vehicles, to those that are sleek and sexy, but all of them showcasing technology designed to make driving safer, cleaner, and even more fun. The mission is to lower emissions, reduce congestion, even eliminate collisions. Are we there yet? Not quite, but this book’s aim is to offer a glimpse of what might be once we arrive there. Larry Edsall, a specialist automobile journalist, has worked for 12 years for AutoWeek Magazine, the most prestigious American weekly dedicated to automobiles. During his career, he has covered the most important motoring events and tested a wide range of vehicles around the world, driving prototypes and production cars for well over half a million miles. For Edizioni White Star he wrote Concept Cars and Legendary Cars.

“I deeply love this kind of photography”, says Michael Freeman about reportage photography, “because, each time, the photographer actually goes on a hunt”. My GrandMa Diary My GrandPa Diary

A Journal and Keepsake for My Grandparent Memories Illustrations by Francesca Rossi Grandparents are a fundamental element in society and in families, an important resource linking the often pressing needs of everyday life and the loving care of grandchildren. In childhood, these key figures represent for the kids a real guide because of their tender care, games they play, and countless pieces of good advice and suggestions inspired by their wisdom, derived from experience. This book, with beautiful Francesca Rossi’s retrostyle illustrations, can thus help in knowing them better, because its pages can be a collection of their thoughts, stories, experiences, and scenes from family life. Halfway between a memory album and a diary, these blank pages will be gradually filled up with tales from the grandparents’ life, marking their past, to be interpreted as an invaluable guide for tomorrow.
