Welcome to the 22nd edition of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival On behalf of the North Carolina Pecan Harvest Festival Committee, and our hard-working volunteers, WELCOME TO OUR 22nd ANNUAL PECAN HARVEST FESTIVAL! As the Festival’s Director, it has been an honor and a privilege again this year to work with our community to help organize such a spectacular event that our community looks forward to each year. The N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival Board of Directors and all of the festival committees have worked tirelessly again this year to make this year’s festival enjoyable for people of all ages. We have brought back the traditional events that make our festival unique, as well as some new and exciting events that add to our celebration. One new event is a Queens Reception that will be held at the Arts Council on Thursday evening, October 30. This

Terrie Priest Festival Director event will introduce our beautiful Celebrity Queen, Harriet Edwards Mills to the community and serve as an informal kick-off for the weekend’s activities. Friday, October 31 will feature the traditional Queen’s Coronation and Luncheon, featuring our celebrity Queen, Harriet Edwards Mills and our

beautiful Pecan Belles. Come enjoy a delightful lunch in the historic Vineland Depot at 11:30 a.m., and spend the rest of the afternoon touring the elegant homes of Whiteville. On Saturday, the Pecan Run will start the festival off for us, and it is followed by Whiteville’s Nutty Parade. Afterwards, downtown Whiteville will be transformed into a wonderland of FREE family fun, filled with craft booths, food vendors, games, rides, contests, and live entertainment performed by The Embers featuring Craig Woolard and also the Four Miles South Band. We hope you will bring your family and meet your friends in downtown Whiteville for an exciting day of fun, fellowship and entertainment. I hope to see you there! Terrie H. About the cover The beautiful artwork on the cover was created by artist Cassie Ott. It was designed at the request of N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival Queen, Harriet Edwards Mills, to be used at this year’s Queen’s Reception Thursday, 6-8 p.m., at the Columbus County Arts Council (CCAC). For $30, those who register can create their very own 16x20 pecan masterpiece (with the help of the Wine &

Design staff, of course) to take home. Artist Erin Kornegay will be teaching step by step how to paint this picture. Mills says, “Come and join us to discover or rediscover the joy of painting; no experience needed!” Space is limited (to 20 painters). Call the CCAC at (910) 6407608. It’s a new event for this year’s festival ... “Wine & Design Pecan Style.”

Harriet Edwards Mills is Festival Queen By LAURA WORTHINGTON and CLARA CARTRETTE Staff Writers A young businesswoman who calls herself a “mompreneur” is coming home to serve as Queen of the North Carolina Pecan Harvest Festival Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Harriet Edwards Mills of Raleigh was selected for the honor for the festival’s 21st annual production. She grew up in Whiteville, the daughter of Rick and Abbie Edwards, and is a 1999 graduate of Whiteville High School. She is married to Patrick Mills and they have two children, 5-year-old Little Patrick and 3-year-old Abigail. Mills will be crowned at the Pecan Festival luncheon Friday, Oct. 31 at Vineland Station and will make appearances in the Saturday parade and other activities throughout downtown Whiteville. A girls’ trip to South Carolina in 2010 spurred the idea for a business that caters to women. Mills and her neighbor went to enjoy themselves

Harriet Edwards Mills while taking an art class and sipping wine in a studio setting. A little wine later, they birthed the idea of Wine and Design and now the business has gone regional with 42 franchised locations. “We decided Raleigh was the place to start a similar idea,” Mills said. And with that decided, they put their heads together, put together a

business plan and opened in Raleigh that same year. “I decided to start franchising when our artists, a husband and wife team, came to us and wanted to start their own Wine and Design,” Mills said. “We felt that we owed it to them because they gave it their all with us at the beginning. We talked with lawyers and started the franchise part. The couple opened in Cary and remain one of our top producers. Why does she think the business has been so successful? “When you put your heart into something you really believe in, it will make you succeed and stronger as a person,” Mills said. “There have been some ups and downs but it has only made me smarter and made me make wiser decisions; also be true and honest to yourself, customers and franchisees. “Social media has also played a huge part of our success,” she continued. “I have lived on Facebook and all social media since the first day we started the Raleigh loca-

tion. Without social media we would not have had the success and press from various news outlets around the U.S.” The Pecan Queen says she is looking forward to spending the festival weekend with people who have meant so much to her throughout her life. “I also cannot wait to share one of Whiteville’s most memorable weekends with my children so they can see just how special this town is,” she added.

Lifetime educator to be parade grand marshal By WALLYCE TODD Staff Writer Kenwood Royal will be 80 years old when he rides in his first parade. Yet, he won’t just being riding, he will be serving as the grand marshal for the 2014 Pecan Harvest Festival this week. A man who is a passionate career educational professional, Royal cares deeply about Columbus County and its citizens, especially its children. He still works full time with Columbus County Schools, and has been doing so for 57 or so years. On Friday, this intelligent, empathetic individual will be seeing his hometown of years in a whole new light… from an open-aired car in Whiteville’s fall festival parade. Suzanne King is on the Pecan Harvest Festival executive committee. When asked about Royal’s role in the festival, she stated with enthusiasm: “It’s so well deserved for Kenwood to be selected. He’s no stranger to

“I do like pecans. I love a good pecan pie. My son, Sam, makes an excellent pecan pie,” says the 2014 festival parade marshal, Kenwood Royal, as he eats a piece of said son’s pie. anyone.” As the son and grandson of farmers, Royal appreciates nature’s bounty, and as the

pecan parade marshal, he will be celebrating his agricultural roots and educational growth, as crops, creativity and crafts will be celebrated during this weekend’s festival. It will be a weekend with information, education and entertainment flowing. Royal speaks of the Columbus County seat: “I’ve always loved Whiteville,” he continued. “I like the diverse community. It’s just the ideal place to work in the school system because you have the opportunity to work with everybody.” Everybody included King, even when she was a kid. As a child, she attended schools in Whiteville, and she speaks of Royal fondly. “He just has a charisma about him. He’s just a wonderful man. He’s dedicated his whole life to education … That has been his mission, to make things better for everybody through education, no matter what age.” Royal is a word-of-mouth advertiser for the town he’s

“He’s dedicated his whole life to education … That has been his mission, to make things better for everybody through education, no matter what age. It’s so well deserved for Kenwood to be selected. He’s no stranger to anyone.” Suzanne King lived in most of his married life. (He’s been married to his wife, the former Louise Fuller, for 55 years) He loves to brag about the benefits of living in Whiteville. “Whiteville is a very diverse community. It has a little bit of everything. I tell people when they ask where I’m from … the way I look at it is this: ‘if Whiteville doesn’t haven’t it, we probably don’t need it.’” “It’s a great community to raise your family. Whiteville is

a great place to live… there is a lot of pride in all the communities of Columbus County.” Thinking about his childhood, Royal smiled as he said, “When you come out of the woods in Brunswick County and live in Whiteville, it’s like living in a metropolis. I’ve had no desire to leave Whiteville.” Speaking of his parade marshal post, the soon-to-be octogenarian stated: It’s made me feel real good that they would choose a person who’s devoted their life to education for this honor. I’m very excited about it. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be 80 years old when I do that. And I’ve never ridden in a parade that I can remember.” Royal concluded: “I have the best porch in Whiteville for watching parades, and I’m usually sitting there and waving at people riding in the parade. This year, it’s going to be an honor to wave at people who are sitting on my front porch.”

N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival will welcome thousands By WALLYCE TODD Staff Writer Pecan-loving people are making plans. The NC Pecan Harvest Festival (NCPHF) committee is gearing up for the annual autumn event, to be held in downtown Whiteville this weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Laughter interjected itself midst the serious planning that took place in the Vineland Station Depot earlier this autumn as committee members geared up for the festival. From the parade, to the website, to the queen’s qualities, to pecan recipes, to the car show, to Pecan belles, to the home tour… multiple festival topics were discussed. Suzanne King, an avid advocate of her local community and the annual festival, grinned as she joked: “The criteria is that you have to be a nut before you are even on the festival committee.” However, she was quite serious as she spoke of all the exciting events she believes will make this festival one of the best yet.

The N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival Committee has been meeting monthly planning for the big autumn event. Pictured at this month’s meeting are, L to R: Terrie Priest, Charlie Duncan, Steven Bryan, Suzanne King and Meleah Collier. Check out www.ncpecanfestival.com for all the latest information of the upcoming festival, taking place in Whiteville Oct. 30-Nov. 1. She also spoke highly of this year’s NCPHF leader: “We feel absolutely honored to have Terrie as our director this year.” Charlie Duncan has been the

parade director “for forever,” he said with a laugh. He noted about the one this year: “It’s going to be a great parade; we may have more than 80 units. It’s the

“It has been an awesome experience to be the director of the 2014 N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival. It’s going to be a great day. We’ve got a lot of exciting events. It will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.” Meleah Collier is the director of the festival’s cooking contest, which she labels “a tasty

“I’m one of the members of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival committee and I’m also a member and on the board of directors for the N.C. Pecan Growers Association. This festival is a good way to promote the pecan, because we’re wanting everyone to know what a N.C. pecan tastes like … It tastes supergood!” Rossie Ward

to be great,” said Priest. “One of them will be The Embers, a beach music band, featuring Craig Woolard. The other one is a country rock band from Shallotte, called Four Miles South.”

It’s not going to be available to purchase, but he’s going to be promoting his book and his story starts from the minute when he gets into the City of Whiteville all the way to the millpond, which is where he grew up…. The Embers to entertain The Embers are widely considered a musical marvel. The Embers consider the genre of Beach Music as “music with a memory” and have been creating lasting memories since its inception in 1958. The N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival entertainment will star music by the long-popular regional band, The Embers. They will be playing on the main stage Saturday between 11:45-4 p.m. There are many bands or groups today yet few that are considered a musical institution. The Embers have solidified their position as a thriving musical entity leaving their mark on listeners for decades.

The Embers boast numerous albums and single releases that span decades and all the crazes continuing to exhibit top quality showmanship, musicianship and professionalism. Having been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and most recently the South Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame, The Embers are honored to carry the moniker of North Carolina’s Official Ambassadors of Music. Festival-goers will be able to listen to several sets by the up-tempo band, and can expect to be thoroughly entertained through them all. Dancing in the street in front of the stage is encouraged. A good time is anticipated to be had by all.

Cooking contest a favorite at Pecan Harvest Festival Cooks who are nuts about using pecans in their recipes are still being encouraged earlier to enter the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival Cooking Contest for a chance to win cash prizes and bragging rights. Interested cooks need to act quickly, as the festival is this weekend. Meleah Stanley said she and Kathy Moscow will do their best to fit everyone in, so interested cooks who’ve not yet registered should contact Stanley and see what flexibility can be offered. Adults, ages 16 and older, entered recipes in one of the following categories: appetizer, main dish, side/salad, and dessert. Youth, ages 10 to 15 years old, entered one dessert recipe. Each entry has to contain at least one cup of pecans. The recipes now become the property of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival and the Pecan Growers Association.

Pecan pie is always a favorite recipe for local residents. Contestants will prepare and deliver entries for each category entered to the Vineland Station Depot, 701 South Madison Street. The doors will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, and will be locked at 9:30 a.m.

Camden Military Academy Cadets to escort belles Camden Military Academy’s Cadets have become a staple of the North Carolina Pecan Harvest Festival. The cadets escort the Pecan Belles throughout the Festival and help with the Tour of Homes. The history of Camden Military Academy is found in the institution’s website. While the Camden Military Academy tradition dates back to 1892, operations on the current campus began with the 1958-59 school year. The academy combines the traditions of three institutions – Carlisle Military School, which operated in Bamberg, South Carolina, from 1892 to 1977; Camden Academy, which was located on the campus from 1949 to 1957; and Camden Military Academy. Camden Military Academy has operated as a non-profit, tax-exempt institution since 1974 and is governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Carlisle Military School was established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford

Carlisle, who was for many years the president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. In 1932, Carlisle was leased by Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher and in 1938 was pur-

chased by them. They, and later their son, Col. William Risher, operated it as a military preparatory school until it closed in May 1977. Camden Military Academy in Camden, S.C. was originally founded as Camden Academy in 1950 by a group of generous and far-sighted Camden citizens who felt that their town was an ideal setting for a private school. Col. James F. Risher, the president of Carlisle Military School, purchased the facility and changed the name to Camden Military Academy. His son, Col. Lanning P. Risher, was the school’s first headmaster, and he served in that position for 37 years. In 1974, Lanning Risher led the academy through a reorganization as a non-profit, taxexempt institution. Camden Military Academy’s mission, first articulated by Risher, is to accept young men of unfulfilled promise and lead them to a future of success. This philosophy, with its roots firmly established at Car-

Cadets learn to practice the concepts of honor, integrity, and duty as they grow in their everyday lives on campus. They learn to accept responsibility for their successes and failures in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in their military roles. Cadets are encouraged to develop their own individual

strengths and talents while at the same time to respect the rights of others. The school’s philosophy is to develop the “whole man” to the end that he is prepared not only academically, but also emotionally, physically, and morally, to face the trials and meet the opportunities that will be his after he leaves Camden Military Academy.

Pecan Growers welcome visitors to celebrate the ‘superior nut’ The North Carolina Pecan Growers have enjoyed a wonderful history with the North Carolina Pecan Festival in Whiteville, North Carolina. A number of our members have attended and participated in the educational workshops, as vendors, or as general supporters of this wonderful festival. The North Carolina Pecan Growers Association currently has approximately 100 members who are primarily growers from all over the State of North Carolina and some from adjoining states. We have an annual educational meeting and workshop in February and a summer program, as well. Our mission is education for our members and the public and continually learning new and more efficient ways to grow pecans and to produce them locally for a growing North Carolina population. We have a multitude of members with divergent interests from backyard trees to people with larger commercial orchards. We believe the future of the pecan industry in North Carolina is bright and our State is blessed with good farmland, good sunlight, and unlike many other ares of the country, plenty of water. As North Carolina farmers and

landowners continue to try to diversify from a largely tobacco-oriented farming community, pecans are becoming more and more of a speciality

crop that is a perfect niche for many farm owners. We are all encouraged because scientists continue to reveal more and more health
