2015 N.C. Strawberry Queen farewell 84th North Carolina Strawberry Festival, Page 3
By TARA DANIELLE WARD I know it is extremely cliché to say, but I have honestly had the time of my life during my reign as the 83rd North Carolina Strawberry Festival Queen. I couldn’t have made it through this journey without the help of so many people that are near and dear to my heart. First, I would like to thank God for this amazing opportunity. He has blessed me with so many people that have helped make this year possible and I can truly say, I have no idea where I would be without him. To the judges, thank you for taking a chance and choosing me to represent the town of Chadbourn and the N.C. Strawberry Festival. You have no idea how happy I was the night my name was finally called on that stage, even though it took a few minutes to realize I was the one who had actually won. It was definitely a dream come true.
To the Town of Chadbourn and the Strawberry Association, it has truly been a pleasure representing such a wonderful place and organization. I hope that I have made everyone proud during my reign as the 83rd N.C. Strawberry Festival Queen. I will forever remember this experience and hold it close to my heart. Debbie, thank you for attending the festivals with us and making sure we arrived to the events on time. We have definitely had a lot of conversations involving many different topics. You were able to hear me sing almost every song that played on the radio, whether it sounded good or not. While Brinkley and Causey were asleep in the back seat, we were either talking or singing our hearts out. Oh, let’s not forget about our sixhour drive to Bakersville for the Rhododendron Festival, but how could you forget? That was a whole six hours of me singing and yes. I do know almost every song. CeCe, I am being honest
when I say I don’t even know where to start. I’m pretty sure you were supposed to be mine and Brittany’s sister, however I just don’t know if mama could have handled all three of us together at one time in the same house. She can barely handle us now. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me and that sure is a whole lot. From doing my hair, letting me stay with you, letting me go sit in your car to practice my songs, practicing interview with me, doing my makeup, taking me places, decorating my overalls, keeping me sane on pageant day even when you’re about to go insane, and last but not least, putting up with me because I know I can be a handful or two at times but that’s only because I love you. I don’t know where I would be without you in my life. So, thank you again for everything. I know I’ve already said this, but always remember that I love you. Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Elijaih. I’m stumped again at knowing where to start. All

A Message from the Mayor . . . Welcome to the 84th Annual North Carolina Strawberry Festival, the oldest agricultural event in the state. The Town of Chadbourn is proud to carry on a tradition that began when the strawberry was king and more strawberries were shipped from Chadbourn than from anywhere else in the world. This year, the Strawberry Festival promises to be one of the biggest and best celebrations ever! We are glad that you are here to enjoy all of the festivities with us. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you again soon. Sincerely, Phillip Britt, Mayor Town of Chadbourn

TOWN OF CHADBOURN
Princess Collier farewell
84th North Carolina Strawberry Festival, Page 5
Last year on May 2, 2015 I was crowned the newest member of the strawberry family. When Bob called out my name as the 83rd N.C. Strawberry Festival Princess I could not believe what I was hearing. It took a couple of minutes for it to sink in that all the work, quizzes on strawberry information, dance practices at 11 p.m. and trip after trip to look for outfits had paid off. Little did I know, the fun was just beginning. This year has been one for the books, for sure. I have had such an amazing time representing the town of Chadbourn and the berry we all love. I could not have successfully traveled this journey without so many wonderful people by my side. I must first thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. Having enjoyed the festival my entire life, I always dreamed of being strawberry royalty and He allowed my dream to become reality. Through this experience He gave me a whole new way of extending my family and nu-
merous opportunities to travel and see his beautiful creations. Mama, thank you so much for making sure I always looked my best and having the most patience when my inner diva would come out on the mornings of early events. From taking you 17 times to come in and get me out of bed in the morning, driving me to where ever I had to be, for having your calendar with dates and times of anything from dress fittings to softball games you always had my back. And of course, I must also mention those handy dandy lists you’d give me of things I needed to do as well as your need to snap one more picture “just in case.” I love you. Daddy, thank you for always making sure all my bases were covered for parades, by working so hard to make sure I had all the things I needed, and for always giving me a laugh before events with your witty sense of humor. I love and appreciate you more than you will ever know. Cailey, you were always so
patient during parades and pictures and (most of the time) did it with a smile on your face. Thanks for always coming out to the garage and helping mom tell me what needed to be fixed in my dances. “You missed a rift. That needs to sound better” I don’t tell or show you often enough, but I love you. Nana and Pa, Nana, there are really no words to express how helpful you have been this year and have always been. You were always ready to ride to the beach to look for outfits, to take me to events when mom and dad couldn’t and to order dresses for me at 12 a.m. - thank you for everything. Pa, thanks for all the wisdom you have shared with me throughout the years and for always telling me to go after whatever I put my mind to. And although you always think I have too much on my plate I could not be more grateful that you both have not stopped supporting me through this whole journey. I love you both. Grandma and Grandpa,

me every step of the way.I loved every video, face-time, and text message that always encouraged me, put a smile on my face and made me laugh out loud. Our shopping excursions were always an experience to remember but oh so worth the memories. Thank you for your contributions to my strawberry wardrobe. The white gown is my fave.. I love you all and “I really appreciate it.” Storms, “Mama Storms,” without you this experience would not have been the same. You helped me grow in ways I didn’t know were possible, you gave me pep talks when I needed them and always gave me a standing ovation when I practiced my dance for you. You drove home from the beach to meet me, gave your honest fashion advice and encouraged me to step out of my box. Props to you for picking the white. You will always hold a very special place in my heart. My awesome parade drivers Laikyn, Allison, and Ken, I so appreciate you allowing me to showcase your car and the Strawberry Festival. Ken, I am so glad your streak wasn’t broken last year. Alaina and Kyle, you guys were probably the most patient. I know I’m not the easiest to teach, but I do know we always had a good time no matter how ill you would get with me. Thank you for sharing just a little bit of your talent. Alaina, you’ll never know how much it meant for you be to backstage with me last year to calm my nerves, give advice, and always make me laugh before going on stage. Cathy, you are an unsung hero. Thank you for all the behind the scenes work you do that so many people are unaware of. I appreciate your kindness and all you have done for me throughout the year. Mimi, thank you for helping me make strawberry jam to share with my Strawberry Family. You are the best. Debbie, you are the best chauffeur ever. Thank you for always getting us to and from our destinations safely and for letting Tara and I control the radio. Pageant Committee, Sponsors, and Strawberry Festival Association, there are no words

to adequately express my most sincere appreciation for the opportunity this year has afforded me.Your support of my reign means more than you will ever know. Catherine, I can’t imagine what my year would’ve been like without you. All those long car rides together in the back seat, dancing for you at night in the hotel room and hours of sitting and talking at your house are times I will never forget. You have shown me what a true lady should be like, never failed to tell me that “boys are bad,” and that when I “go to college not to go crazy.” We have shared many laughs and I’m sure they are not over. You are an amazing lady and I will forever be grateful for my year spent with you. I love you Mama Strawberry. Tara, my queen, thank you so much for being the big sister I never had. We have gotten closer than we ever imagined and created a bond that will never be broken. Just like a sister, you got on my nerves but you were still there to listen to my problems. We have shared countless thoughts and laughs that are stories worth telling. I think over the past year we have established that, 1- we’re both pretty in love with food (mac & cheese being the best), 2- I am a better dancer, 3- chips and salsa, pickles and sweet tea always taste better at 3 a.m. and that no matter how many times we play a song, sometimes I just don’t catch on. But no matter what, we are still an amazing pair that works pretty well together, if I do say so myself. We will forever be Berry Sisters. An extra special thank you to all of my “unnamed” friends and family who have supported me from start to finish. I am blessed beyond measure with those who love me. I couldn’t have done it without you all cheering me on. This year has been a blast. I can string together no words to tell you just how amazing it has been. I have made friends and memories that will last a lifetime and for that I will be forever grateful. So for the last time, “Proudly representing the town of Chadbourn and North Carolina’s oldest agricultural festival. Brinkley Noel Collier 83rd N.C. Strawberry Princess

how to make me laugh and smile. If I have somewhere to be, I can always count on you two to make sure I look presentable and if I need a ride, I know you can get me there. I love you with all my heart and I wouldn’t trade either one of you for a thing in this world. Oh yeah, by the way Jennifer, I definitely had the best looking strawberry shoes, it goes without saying that your creativeness is amazing. Elijah, thank you for always aggravating me, playing the Xbox with me, and for always telling me how pretty I am. Last year around this time, you and the dryer got into a fight and sadly the dryer won, hence your broken foot. Despite not leaving the house for anything, you showed up at my pageant to support me. Not many people would do that, so thank you. I love you. Jane, thank you for taking the time out of your day to make all of my strawberry outfits. You always done a beautiful job. Stephen, thank you for giving me vocal lessons, pushing me to my potential and all the laughs in between. I hope to see you soon. Stay safe across the country. Cheryl and Sammie, thank you for always making sure I have a nice, shiny, and clean car to ride in during the parades. Thanks for always making sure I rode in style. I love you both. Mama, mama, mama. Can a speech really say thank you enough to you? I honestly don’t think so. I know the past couple years haven’t been the eas-
iest, but somehow you always seem to make things work. You must have some magic that we don’t know about because I still to this day wonder how you do all that you do. You always make sure I have everything I need even if it means you have to do without, and for that I definitely can’t thank you enough. I love you so much and words will never be able to explain how I truly feel. I know I get your blood boiling and your heart racing at times, and I am sorry for that but I can’t help that I am stubborn. You are a strong, hardworking individual and I hope that I can be at least half the woman you are someday. You love me unconditionally and I see that. I cherish every pageant moment we have together. I hope you realize how much you mean to me, because it’s a lot. Thank you for taking pictures, driving me places, being my biggest supporter and screaming louder than anyone last year when my name was called. Hold your head high and never look down. Always remember that God gives his hardest battles to his strongest warriors. Daddy, I know you aren’t always able to make it home, but just know that I love you very much and thank you for always supporting me. Everyone says I’m your mini me, and I just may be, who knows? I always know if I need constructive criticism to go to you because you are only making sure that next time I do it even better. I love you and thank you for everything you do.

Brittany, BB, Britt, dude, whatever I call you. You have been by my side throughout my whole life. You’ve always been the most awesome, meanest, funniest, and all around amazing person. You make sure I have everything I need when going on a trip, or even going to an event around home. You even look for dresses for me when I don’t ask and even purchase them just so I’ll have something new to wear. Money doesn’t always come easy, but you always make sure I don’t go without. You help pick out my wardrobe and make sure I look up to par for everything. I know we fight like cats and dogs, but I swear I couldn’t ask for a better sister. I know I don’t always listen to you, and I may not think you’re right most of the time, but that’s only because I’m a little hardheaded. As much as I hate to admit it, I know you’re probably right most of the time. Even when you’re being mean or we’re fighting, I know it’s only because you want what’s best
for me and to point me in the right direction. I love you so much and I wouldn’t trade our fights for anything. It has only brought us closer throughout the years. I don’t tell you very often how much I appreciate you, but you’re my lifesaver in so many situations. Whether you know it or not, you’re my rock and I look up to you. I can never thank you enough. I love you. I have so many friends who have provided support, encouragement, and motivation to continue with my pageant journey, but one in particular comes to mind. Gracelyn, I have no idea where to start because words could never describe how thankful I am to have a friend like you. Since sixth grade you have served as my go-to person, shoulder to cry on, and personal therapist. Words could never describe the gratitude I have for your understanding and support when it comes to many weekends being preoccupied with pageant events. Thank you for coming
with me just to make sure we spent time together. You will always be my best friend and I love you more than words could possibly explain. Bob, the man who taught me how to really dance, the pageant dad, AKA the boss man. Thank you for being an amazing friend to Causey and for being a role-model to me and Brinkley. You’re so funny, and I mean so funny. You could make a stop sign laugh, and we all know that isn’t possible. I can’t forget to mention how you made me laugh during the pageant as I was walking during beauty, I guess that added the little extra I needed to win. You’re the best dance teacher ever. You even had patience with me when teaching me how to square dance. I had some troubles, especially when I rolled my ankle in a hole the first night we got there, but I finally came around. I hope to see you in years to come and thank you for all that you do. To all of the other N.C. FesContinued on page 11

Continued from page 10 tival pageant directors and committee members, thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of your wonderful festivals, and of course for the opportunity to represent the great town of Chadbourn and the world’s oldest agricultural festival across the great state of North Carolina. Tammy, I think you have witnessed a little bit of my crazy self over this year. Me and Brinkley together can be a handful, but somehow you always dealt with us. Thank you for always taking pictures of me or of me and Brinkley when my mom or sister couldn’t be there. You never hesitated once, it was always a yes right away. I’m definitely going to miss you serenading me in the car and letting me hear your beautiful voice. Brinkley, my princess, my little baby. I love you so much. We have grown so close over the past year and have become great friends. I mean, who else would eat a whole jar of pickles with me? I look back at all the times we’ve spent together from, doing your makeup, to
trying to fix your hair, putting your crown on for you, lying in bed, cuddling, and just laughing. I know I get on your nerves and you get on mine, but I couldn’t have asked for a better princess. Our schedules clash quite a bit, but we always seem to make it work. You know how to make me laugh if no one else does. We can look at each other and automatically know what the other is thinking. You mean the world to me and I can honestly say, this is a friendship that will last a life time. You are not only my strawberry sister, but you’re like the little sister I never had. So, guess what? You can’t get rid of me. Thank you for being the best princess ever, I love you. Cathy, I know you’ve had a lot on your plate this year, but you have worked so hard and I am so proud of you. I know I will see you later tonight, so be ready for a big hug. You’re a strong, amazing, and beautiful woman and I hope to work as hard as you one day and to save as many animals as you. I love you and thank you for
keeping me in line this year, I know it was difficult. Stay strong, beautiful. I love you. Causey, my sunshine, my only sunshine. Thank you for all the guidance you have given me throughout the past four years of my life. You are one of the silliest people I know. I take every second that I spend with you to heart and I cherish every memory we’ve made. You light up my world. I know that since I moved away for college it has been hard to come home and see you, but I always try to stop by and see you before I leave. And if I’m being honest, that’s the best way to end my trip home. I always call you my grandma because you always make sure I’m fed before I leave your house, you hug me, you kiss me, and even tell me I’m ugly sometimes but you may throw that I’m pretty in there every once in a while. Every piece of advice you have ever given me, I have taken to heart, and I put it to use. You are a huge part of my life, and I hope you never forget that. I’m so happy that your health enabled you

to attend the festivals with us this year. The little bit of time you were awake during the car rides were always fun. We sang, we ate, you stole my pickles and told me they made me ugly, but still continued to eat them. Our times together are priceless. If you say more blush, then yes ma’am, more blush. Even though sometimes, I have to tone it down because you like them extra pink. And the same goes for lipstick. You never hold back on telling me your opinion on something. And when I say she doesn’t hold back, she doesn’t hold back. It’s her way or the highway. I just want to say thank you one more time for being the wonderful person you are and for the wonderful things you do. As she would say “I love you from the depths of my heart.” I had an amazing year full of amazing people and I couldn’t thank you all enough. This year was a dream come true. I traveled places I had never been and met so many people that I still keep in touch with. Now, I must say my good-
byes, but before I do, I would like to tell the 84th N.C. Strawberry Festival Queen a thing or two. Once your name is called and that crown is placed upon your head, you have a huge and busy year ahead of you. This is your time to shine. All I ask is that you wear your crown with pride, represent the town of Chadbourn and your title to the best of your ability, always smile, spread the word about our amazing festival and town and understand what an amazing opportunity awaits you. Always make your berry sisters proud. Just a tiny reminder considering you have your license, when talking about a strawberry, it is one of the only times that red means go and green means stop. With all of this being said, it is time for me to represent my title one last time so without further a-due, proudly representing the town of Chadbourn and North Carolina’s oldest agricultural festival. UNC hoops great Phil Ford is Strawberry Grand Marshal University of North Carolina basketball legend Phil Ford will serve as grand marshal for the 84th annual N.C. Strawberry Festival in Chadbourn. Ford will speak at the dignitaries’ luncheon before the parade and then serve as grand marshal for the parade, which will begin at 2 p.m. Ford played basketball at UNC for Coach Dean Smith from 1974 to 1978 and was a member of teams that went to the NCAA tour nament four times. UNC played in the national championship game during Ford’s junior year. As a senior he won the coveted Wooden Award, given annually to the nation’s top player. He and fellow Tar Heels Antawn Jamison and Michael Jordan are the only Tar Heels to have won that award, and UNC is the only school to have three different players win the award. He was also named the National Player of the Year in 1978 by the United States Bas-
ketball Writers Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and The Sporting News. As a point guard, Ford earned first-team All-America honors three times and was the 1978 National Player of the Year. In his 11-year stint as a UNC assistant coach, Ford was a tireless instructor, motivator and recruiter who was a part of five Final Four appearances, five NCAA Regional titles and five ACC Tournament titles. He is UNC basketball’s alltime leading scorer with 2,290 points. He saved what was perhaps his greatest collegiate performance for his final home game in Carmichael Auditorium, scoring a careerhigh 34 points in leading the Tar Heels to an Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship-clinching 87-83 win over Duke. A member of the North Carolina basketball fam-
Phil Ford ily for more than 25 years, Ford currently works for the Educational Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the UNC athletic department. He also played professionally for five years with the National Basketball Association’s Kansas City Kings, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets.

N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Troxler congratulates berry festival
Dear North Carolina Strawberry Festival Committee Members. I would like to congratulate you on the 84th North Carolina Strawberry Festival, the oldest agriculture festival in North Carolina. Strawberries are part of the state’s $71 billion agriculture industry-an industry that provides jobs and supports businesses across North Carolina. Strawberries alone contribute a whopping $18 million dollars to our state’s economy and Columbus County Strawberries are among the very best. Not only are they a boost to our economy, but also they are low in calories and a good source of vitamins and nutrients. They are high iron and Vitamin C not to mention a healthy dose of folic acid, potassium and cancer- fighting antioxidants. The strawberry is not only nutritious; it is a delicious treat as well, and my favorite fruit. Thankfully my birthday falls in the spring so I can always celebrate with strawberry shortcake made with fresh, North Carolina-grown strawberries. After all, if you want the best, “It’s got to be N.C. Strawberries.” The strawberry season also heralds, in the start of the North Carolinas growing season and kicks off the opening of famers markets across the state, so their arrival is eagerly awaited by many. Best wishes for a safe and successful festival and a great strawberry season. N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler was raised in the Guilford County community of Browns Summit and has spent his entire career in agriculture as founder, owner and operator of Troxler Farms. Over the years, the family-owned farm has produced tobacco, wheat, vegetables and soybeans. Since taking office in 2005, Troxler has focused on developing new markets for N.C. farm
Steve Troxler products, preserving working farms and protecting the state’s food supply. Troxler is a past president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. He also is a former chairman of NASDA’s Food Regulation and Nutrition Committee. He served as president of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture in 2010-2011.
The Chadbourn Town Manager, Bob Jones, enjoyed riding in last year’s parade.
He also serves on the boards of the N.C. Foundation for Soil and Water Conservation, the Rural Economic Development Center and the N.C. Biotechnology Center. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the N.C. Tobacco Research Commission and the Southern United States Trade Association. Troxler was recognized with the 2014 Public Service Award from the N.C. Travel Industry Association for his support of agritourism and several major tourism projects in the state. Other recent awards include the 2013 Forest Conservationist of the Year Award from the N.C. Wildlife Federation, the 2012 Meritorious Service Award from the N.C. Soybean Producers Association, the 2011 Elliot O. Grosvenor Food Safety Award from the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the Distinguished Service Award from the N.C. Agricultural Foundation, and a leadership award from the Western North Carolina Livestock Center and WNC Communities. Troxler was graduated from N.C. State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in conservation, with a concentration in environmental studies. He and his wife, Sharon, have two grown sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. In his spare time, Troxler enjoys restoring antique farm equipment and playing with his dog, Kate, a Labrador/golden retriever mix.

Welcome to the 84th Annual
NORTH CAROLINA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL at Chadbourn
Welcome to the 84th North Carolina Strawberry FestivalChadbourn. Come, enjoy, relax and gather memories that will last a life time! We hope that you will come out and enjoy the events that have been planned for the 84th festival. This year we have chosen Phil Ford as the parade marshal. The first festival was held May 6, 1926 when the farmer was first recognized for their efforts during the first Strawberry Festival when Chadbourn was known as the “Strawberry Capital of the world. Today, we still celebrate the strawberry, the farmer, the tradition and heritage from the very onset. A special thanks to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Goodness Grows in North Carolina for their many years of support and guidance. A super big thanks to all our volunteers who put in countless hours to make sure the NC Strawberry Festival is a success. Including members of the various committee, the local clubs and our town employees who work effortlessly to make sure that Chadbourn is ready for the Festival. Thanks for all the extra time you take to make sure everything is prepared for the festival! To our patrons who continue to visit and support the North Carolina Strawberry Festival, thank you for your continued support.
Guy Long
2016 NC Strawberry Festival President
