2015 Columbus County Agriculture Fair--Page 2

County Fair promises fun and excitement By CLARA CARTRETTE News Editor The Columbus County Agriculture Fair will kick off its 36th production Tuesday, Oct. 13 with the fairgrounds reserved until 1 p.m. for kindergarten students from throughout Columbus County, their teachers and chaperones. They’ ll have lunch under large tents, see the exhibits and enjoy other fair offerings. E a ch ye a r a n ew c ro p of kinderg ar ten students watch in amazement at such wonders as cow-milking and hundreds of animals at Old McDonald’s Farm in the livestock barn. There are many pens of rabbits, pigs, horses, cows, chickens, ducks, turkeys and other farm animals that some of the kids have never seen before, and sometimes there is an exotic animal or two, such as camels. But this year there will be no chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys or any other fowl due to the avian flu epidemic that has destroyed numerous flocks in other areas. There is a state ban on transporting any kind of fowl to fairs, sales and other gatherings to help prevent the flu from spreading. Fire and rescue departments from throughout the county will be there to demonstrate various functions of their jobs and equipment, and there might even be an opportunity to jump on a wagon or trailer loaded with hay for a hayride through the parking lot. Some of the midway rides for kids will be in operation for their entertainment and the kindergartners will have an opportunity to stroll through the exhibit hall to see hundreds if not thousands of exhibits ranging from canned goods to handicrafts, art, photographs, sewing and much more. Parade Tuesday This will be the 36th year of the County Fair, but the 28th annual County Fair Parade. A 3:30 p.m. parade through downtown Whiteville Tuesday officially opens the fair to the public. There will be a variety of farm and fair related units in addition to the traditional school, civic and political units, queens and princesses,

tractors, unusual vehicles and much more. Units will be judged and the County Fair will pay $50 for the first place units in four categories: best livestock unit, best row crop unit, first place “other,” and best dressed farm animal. Gates open at the fairgrounds on Prison Camp Road at 5 p.m. Tuesday and there will be a new surprise: a $2 discount at the ticket gate. A bounty of entertainment is planned throughout the week. Tuesday night’s offering includes the hat, pumpkin and sweet potato contests at 6 p.m. on the main stage, a flagraising ceremony at 6:25 p.m. by the West Columbus JROTC, and a spelling bee for grades 3, 4, and 5 on the main stage beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dreamland Amusements will provide carnival attractions and thrilling rides on the midway each night and Flimsey the Clown, who has been entertaining at the Columbus County Fair for many years, will be back to perform nightly. Three exhibit halls will have a variety of interesting and educational booths and a grand display of exhibits ranging from art and photography to canned goods, sewing, crafts and many other interesting displays. Pridgen is County Fair parade marshal

Sheila Pridgen, retired Columbus County Clerk of Court, has been chosen as parade marshal for the 2015 Columbus County Fair. She will headline the fair parade as it makes its way north on Madison Street from the South Lee Street intersection where parade units will assemble. Pridgen spent 41 years in the clerk’s office, beginning in 1973 as a temporary typist. She was hired by Clerk of Court Lacy Thompson and quickly moved up to full time employment as a deputy clerk. In the fall of 1991 she was promoted to assistant clerk by Linda Peacock Proctor and upon Proctor’s untimely death in 1998, Pridgen filed to succeed her. She handily won her first election and ran unopposed for reelection three more times. Pridgen retired in 2014.

Sheila Pridgen She credits her success to the work ethic instilled in her by her parents, her faith in Jesus Christ and the dedicated work of the clerk of court’s office staff. One of eight children born to sharecroppers Willard and Dula Bell Simmons in the Mollie community, Pridgen said her parents

taught her that in life you work hard and give thanks to God for your blessings. She is a proud life-long member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Mollie. She and her husband Rudolph have been married 39 years and have two daughters, Jessica Hill and Andrea Lee. They have four grandchildren, Eli, Audrey, Addilyn and Anna Kay. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, riding horses and helping Rudolph with various projects on the farm. An avid supporter of the Columbus County Fair for decades, she has sold countless tickets. Fair board members say they chose to honor her as parade marshal for her service to her community and the fair.

The first Columbus County Fair to be held in 50 years was held in 1980, an effort of the Columbus County Law Enforcement Association. Land owned by the state became available through the ef for ts of local bank executive Rhone Sasser and Gov. Jim Hunt, who became friends while attending N.C. State University. It was property at the N.C. Department of Transportation office on Prison Camp Road that was not being used, so an effort to acquire it to be used as fairgrounds was successful. Shortly into 1980, members of the Law Enforcement Association gathered on the wooded property to talk about the pending County Fair. went on. The fair had its first parade in 1988, which added an exciting new layer to the already successful fair. Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Graham was invited to serve as the grand marshal for the fair’s first parade, and he accepted. His choice “vehicle” was a farm wagon pulled by a mule team, which Sam “Mule Man” Claridy provided and was supposed to chauffeur the commissioner. However, Commissioner Graham would have none of

that. He took the reins and told Claridy to wave to the spectators while he drove the mule team. Years later Commissioner Graham was still bragging about keeping that wagon tongue straight on the centerline of the streets in downtown Whiteville. Graham and Claridy are both now deceased. It was one of the best years for the fair, according to state competition. It won first place in its category.

County Fair offers an exciting variety By CLARA CARTRETTE Staff Writer There is something for everyone at the County Fair. Some prefer the excitement, crowds and noise of the midway rides while others just want to wander through the exhibit halls and enjoy the creativity put forth to decorate winning booths. If peace and quite suits your notion for the moment, go to the quilters room, sit and chat a spell with the quilters or take a needle in hand and make a few stitches in the historical quilt that will be finished before the fair is. While you’re in that building, do a sweep of the educational booths designed and created by 4-H’ers, schools, Scouts and other non-profits. You might head straight to the food booths before you get started on the other events, or enjoy lively entertainment on stage. Perhaps you’ll want to see the animals at Old MacDonald’s Farm, but don’t look for any chickens, ducks, geese or other fowl. Due to the Avian flu, there’s a statewide ban on transporting fowl to fairs, sales and such to prevent the dreaded virus from infecting more animals. However, you’ll find many other choices there. Whatever your fancy, you’ll be pleased with the variety of things to do at the County Fair. The 36th annual Columbus County Agricultural Fair kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 11 with a 3:30 p.m. parade through downtown Whiteville. It will line up on South Lee Street, turn north on Madison Street and progress through town before disbanding at Whiteville High School. Sheila Pridgen, who recently retired after serving as clerk of court for many years, will be the parade grand marshal.

McPherson is main stage man

By CLARA CARTRETTE

Dale McPherson is a fixture at the Columbus County Fair. You’ll find him on stage every day and/or night, introducing people, singing a ballad or two, or just filling time in his amusing way until the next act takes the stage. Columbus County bor n and bred, Dale got hooked on the fair during the early years when he competed in, and won, the talent contest. Fair board members recognized his talent as someone who could keep an audience entertained as a personable stage announcer who knows just about everyone as well as a performer, so he’s pretty much been there every since. Look for him on the main stage.

The County Fair will have preliminary talent contests Friday and Saturday, and the top two winners in the four age divisions will advance to the finals. The first preliminary will be held Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the main stage for ages 6 and younger and 7 to 12. Ages 13 to 15 and 16 and older will compete in the preliminary Saturday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The top two scores for each age group will be announced at the conclusion of each age preliminary. These contestants will return for the finals Sunday when the competition will begin at 2:15 p.m. on the main stage. These contestants should be prepared to give two perfor mances. Winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Elaine T. Honeycutt of Chadbourn is coordinator of the talent com-

Flimsey in action at an earlier fair.

Flimsey Clown is coming back! Flimsey, that wacky, funny clown who has been entertaining County Fair crowds for many years, will be back daily (and nightly) this year. Flimsey is a talent with crowd appeal, making friends and clowning around with people from baby stage to the most senior adults. He wears his signature colorful striped trousers, painted face and a hat that bears his name in the event someone forgets who he is. Flimsey does tricks on a skateboard, has been seen with a baby bottle in his mouth and cracks jokes at every turn. You’ll not only see him on stage, but prowling the midway to entertain young and old. If you haven’t met Flimsey, introduce yourself.

‘Honey Don’t’ plays Friday “Honey Don’t” is a local band comprised of local men who enjoy playing music. It’s an unusual name but there’s nothing unusual about their music. Brothers Craig and Dr. Don Peacock, Matt Dudley and Scott Worthington have been playing together for about three years and their music is a crowd pleaser wherever they go. They play company events, clubs, parties, receptions, weddings and other events. They’ll perform at the County Fair Friday night at 9 p.m. on the main stage. Don, a Whiteville podiatrist, plays bass. His brother Craig operates Peacock Funeral Home and plays rhythm guitar, and both provide vo-

They adopted the name when they started playing at The Emporium in downtown Whiteville on Friday nights. Jim Mauldin asked the name of the band

in order to introduce them, and was told they didn’t have a name. He insisted that they must have a name in order to get introduced, so they told him “Honey Don’t.” Rock-a-billy is just one style of music they play. They’re also into a variety of country, rock, folk, 50s and 60 music.

Sweeney Family Band coming to fair The Sweeney Family Band, a country comedy act based out of Orlando, Fla. will perform at the County Fair Wednesday through Sunday, making appearances on the midway stage and on the main stage. It will be the Sweeney Family Band’s first time performing at the County Fair, but not their first time in Columbus County. In June 2014 the Sweeneys were the very first show to play at the newly restored Ritz Center in Tabor City and they were a big hit, playing a well-attended matinee and a sell-out evening show. Chadbourn native Greg Thompson (Slim Sweeney) organized the group in 2004. He has been an entertainer since he was a young teenager, getting his start here in Columbus County. In 1977 he founded The Strawberry Cloggers of Chadbourn. They traveled over three states from 1977-1983. During that time he became a popular emcee and radio personal-

ity. Thompson moved to Florida on 1983 where he met his future wife, Jackie. He returned to Columbus County in 1985 to once again become a DJ and emcee for special events like the Columbus County Fair. For two years he lived in Wilmington where he

ran his own small entertainment company and in 1988, he moved back to Florida to be with his brother Mike and his mother Sylvia. He worked at a few venues such as Medieval Times, Commodore Cruise Lines And Universal Studios Thompson lived in Myrtle

Beach from 1995-1999 where he was show manager and emcee for Medieval Times. He married Jackie, they had their daughter Mattisen and moved back to Florida in 1999. He officially became a talent agent and producer, started The Sweeney Family Band in 2004 along with producing the World’s Largest Celebrity Impersonators Convention, The Sunburst Convention. A new movie about that was released on Netflix this month. Lynn Frey, aka Skeeter Sweeney, is upright bass player and also plays the mandolin and ukelele. He is from Loudonville, Ohio and started performing in high school as a clown and traveling to fairs throughout the state. He is a graduate of Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College and traveled with the RBBB Circus for a season. Skeeter moved to Orlando in 1988 and worked as the Sea World mime for 25 years until the park cut the mimes from their line-up. He’s been with The Sweeneys

since 2005 and he’s traveled all over the US with the act as well as Jamaica and the Bahamas as a variety performer. Tony Wilburn, aka Little Buck Sweeney, is from Palmetto, Fla. He started playing guitar at age 4, studied classical guitar for six years and started playing country and southern rock at age 11. He has been in a road band for numerous years with some session work in Nashville and Daytona Beach. Little Buck ran his own road group, Kidd Billy, for six years, playing circuit dance clubs and casinos all across the US and Canada, including Alaska. He has been the guitarist for The Sweeney Family Band for the past five years “and my musical journey continues,” he says. The Sweeneys travel all over the USA, bringing their down home, backwoods comedy and music to fans everywhere. They mix the comedy of Hee Haw and the Continued on page 14

Fearless Fair-ley, a giant white fiberglass rooster made by Graham Land Amusements of Bolton, stands sentinel at the County Fair. Carolyn Simmons of Chadbourn won the contest when County Fair officials were seeking a name for a giant fiberglass rooster that had been adopted as the fair’s mascot. She chose Fearless Fair-ley one night after she stayed late and observed the giant white rooster standing guard over the fairgrounds. She thought about how many who attend the fair have lived on a farm and perhaps been chased by a rooster or mother hen. She thought about the hard work that goes into putting on a fair, and Fearless Fair-ley came to mind. Fair officials liked Carolyn’s choice and adopted it.

‘That’s My Dog’ pet show Enter exhibits Friday, Saturday

The County Fair “That’s My Dog” pet show will be held Saturday, Oct 18 at 5 p.m. in the livestock arena. It is sponsored by Betty Gail Kronenwetter and All Creatures Great and Small of Whiteville. There are 11 classes, including Best Costume (dog only),

Best Costume (dog and handler), Smallest Dog, Largest Dog, Longest Ears, Most Spots, Best Tricks, Movie Star Look Alike, Best Obedience (sit, stay, walk on a leash), Hot Dog Race (small dogs) and Musical Chairs. For more information call 640-1909.

Rhonda Thompson has been in charge of collecting and displaying County Fair exhibits in the Evelyn Rabon Building for several years and she’ll be back this year registering exhibits on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10. Thompson said she got interested in the fair exhibits through her grandfather, the late Calton Thompson. He was on the fair board and kept talking about the fair “until he sucked me into it,” she said, “and once you get the County Fair sawdust in your shoes, you’re hooked.” Thompson became a volunteer and was asked to take on the responsibility of recording the exhibits, making sure they were displayed properly and picked up by the owners at the end of the fair, and numerous other duties that come with the job. Exhibits can include just about everything — anything you have made, grown, harvested or processed. First place prizes for individual exhibits range from $4 to $35 and second place pays from $2.50 to $16.50. So look around your homestead. Chances are you’ll find

plenty to enter in the fair and win some money. Categories include: Horticulture (fruits, nuts, vegetables, field crops and house plants); Handiwork (sewing, crocheting, knitting, home furnishings, handicrafts and hobbies); Culinary (breads, cakes, candies, cookies, pies); Photography (portrait, pets and animals, sports, landscapes, flowers, special effects, still life, collage and scenic); Art (acrylics/oils, watercolors, drawings, pottery, sculpture, any 3d art and mixed me-

dia); Old MacDonald’s Farm (rabbits and goats…no chickens or other fowl this year because of the avian flu); Conserved Foods (everything from apples to zucchini).

No fowl

This pen of chickens won a blue ribbon at an earlier fair, but there will be no chickens, geese, ducks or other fowl this year due to the avian flu that has wiped out commercial flocks in other areas. North Carolina has a ban on transporting fowl to fairs, sales and other venues to help prevent the spread of the chicken flu.

Scouts have educational booths to inform fair-goers about their programs.

Larry Hewett’s art on County Fair book cover Talented artist, art teacher and all around good guy Larry Hewett has been pulled out of “art mothballs” by the Columbus County Fair to paint another beautiful cover for the fair’s catalogue of exhibits, competitions, the fair schedule and more. Years ago, when Hewett was graphic artist for The News Reporter’s print department, several of his paintings were used on the covers of the fair’s annual catalogue. During those years, prints of Hewett’s fair catalogue paintings were much in demand. Prints of this year’s fair book cover painting will also be for sale at the fair. A Tabor City High School graduate, Hewett took a correspondent course in art, but his first real art instruction was at Pembroke State University. He earned a non-teaching B.A. degree in art but later went back for teacher certification. After leaving The News Reporter he was a classroom teacher for Columbus County Schools for 23 years but four years ago he left the classroom to become technology facilitator and AIG specialist. He plans to retire at Christmas but wants to volunteer in some of the schools and continue in technology, which he “loves to death,” he said. At the urging of fair board member Anne Ferguson, Hewett agreed to do another painting to be used on the cover of the 2015 fair catalogue. It’s a beautiful, warm and fuzzy setting, featuring a white wicker chair with a

bag of knitting yarn in it and a basket of yarn beside it. There is also a small piece of white furniture and a stool, a pair of flip flops on a green rug and little black and white puppy’s head is lying casually on the corner of the rug on a brick floor. The back half of the cover features a basket with what appears to be needlework and an afghan and quilt lying across the top of a wooden chair. A partial mirror above a lamp with a rooster base has a reflection of a woman who resembles his mother, Hewett said. Look for Hewett’s prints at the County Fair.

Diaper Derby a popular event

There’s a County Fair event that is planned especially for babies, but grown-ups enjoy it a lot more than the babies do. It is sometimes a noisy event, but again, it’s the adults who are making the noise. It’s the Wednesday night Diaper Derby that gets the moms and dads, grandparents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles, friends and neighbors all stirred up. The adults shake rattlers and keys, yell at their chosen baby to crawl toward them, show them baby bottles and fascinating toys. But the babies sometimes look the other way as well as crawl back to the starting line. Or they may just sit there visit-

ing with the cute baby sitting or maybe lying beside them. But eventually a winner is named and that kid’s family cheers loudly. After that session is over, all of the babies are paraded around the stage several times so judges can choose the Pick of the Litter. This is a competition the late Jimmy Ferguson came up with and this is the 13th year it has been held. The Diaper Derby started when the fair did, or shortly after, and Kathy Faulk continues to chair it. For more information call her at 642-4009. There are no specific rules for the Pick of the Litter contest; the winner is chosen

“just because,” which could mean the winner is the cutest, the liveliest, has the prettiest smile, is the friendliest or has on the cutest clothes. Both winners get a prize to take home and one day they will be able to tell their own children they won the Diaper Derby or was chosen Pick of the Litter. The derby winner gets $65, second place takes $35 and third place gets $15. The Pick of the Litter gets a trophy. A baby has one shot at either title, as contestants must be between the ages of 6 and 12 months and not yet walking, so no contest is eligible a second time.

Diaper Derby rules Diaper Derby contestants must register at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the stage, and they must live in either Columbus, Bladen, Robeson, Brunswick or Horry county. One adult may accompany them at each end of the “race track” but at no time are they allowed to enter the boundaries of the “track.” Babies will crawl the length of the 10x20-foot “race track,” but if no contestant has reached the finish line at the end of three minutes, the one closest will be declared the winner.

Fair book pays tribute to L.Z. Tart The Columbus County Fair Board has honored Alonzo (L.Z.) Tart Jr. by dedicating the 2015 County Fair book to him. The book lists all of the fair events and everything that is eligible to enter in the exhibit competition. Described as a man who loves the Columbus County Fair, the dedication gives his age as 82 and states that he can still work circles around anyone at the fairgrounds. Fair friends call him L.Z. and say he has instilled in all of

them the proper care of all of the fair equipment and he understands the science of how the grass grows and the proper time frame it must be cut. “He is legendary in the battle against fire ants and assorted weeks,” the dedication states. “His ability to repair things is remarkable, even when the experts are confused. L.Z.’s knowledge of how to prepare for events such as the Senior Citizen Picnic and Special Friends Day at the fairgrounds is second

to none, and the list goes on. We simply could not function efficiently without his knowledge and guidance the two weeks prior to the opening of the fair and packing it all up when it is done. His mind is sharp and his wit is keen and this makes for a wonderful fair. “We would be remiss if we failed to mention his ability to forecast the weather, which is more reliable than the National Weather Service. Alonzo Tart Jr. is a true friend of the

adult life was spent in Cerro Gordo. He attends Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in the Grist community and enjoys putting together jigsaw puzzles, loves fishing and tinkering around with different things. Friends note that he is a man who possesses many talents and that no matter what you see him doing, he always has a pen in his shirt pocket. At 82 years old he thinks nothing about getting into his car and driving to Florida and he can still stand before an audience and quote poetry he learned as a child. L.Z. is described as a people person and he gives much of his time tomake someone else’s day just a little better. A jovial man, he always has a joke or something else up his sleeve to make you laugh. He is a man who loves his family dearly. He has six children, Michael Dennis, Milton Tart, Hilda Miles, Vanessa Ward, Michael Tart and Lora Eason, who passed away in 2013; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
