Gators hope to gain ground during 2015 season When Rocky Lewis stepped into the head football coaching position at East Columbus last summer, he knew there was a task at hand.. It proved to be even more of a challenge than he had thought. With very few players returning with any type of previous varsity experience, Lewis and his staff worked diligently to keep the program together in the midst of an 0-11 season. “We had to accept the fact that it was going to pretty much turn out to be the type year it was, but from Day One, we worked together at becoming a football program that would improve by the week,” said Little, the son
God Academy. “I don’t know what to expect that first game,” Lewis said. “I’m sure they’ll have some athletes and some pretty good size. We’re hoping it turns out to be a good experience for us. Leumichael Jones, who stepped in at the
starting quarterback spot last season returns to the position and senior T.J. Brown is back as a threeyear starter for the third straight year, Sophomore Darius Bellamy has shown a lot of promise at running back.
The only full-time physician in eastern Columbus County. Darius Bellamy of North Carolina high school football coaching legend Bob Lewis, who is still active as head coach at Clinton. “We were going against some very good teams with a limited amount of experienced personnel and we were
Leumichael Jones having to count on some younger kids to step in and try to fill some holes.” The Gators will open their 2015 season on Aug. 21 with a road trip to Raleigh where they will take on the brand-new football team at Word of

Stallions ready to regain momentum
The South Columbus Stallions endured some rocky terrain in 2014. Under a new head coach, they got off on the wrong foot during their non-conference schedule before battling back to become a strong challenger in the Three Rivers Conference race. Yet the final season record read 5-7 after being upset by Warren County in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs. It was a season that South Columbus fans had been used to during the past two decades. But head coach Kyle Hutchison and his staff guided the Stallions to a tie for runnerup in the Three Rivers Conference and actually went into the final night of regular season play with a shot at sharing the conference title with Whiteville for the second straight season. .”Even though we managed to rebound and get some wins
Brennan Ivey in the conference, it turned into a rather difficult process.” said Coach Hutchsion, a graduate of Ohio State. “I was new, the system was new for the players. We had early setbacks that we didn’t anticipate and we played some very strong teams in
Dennis Leggett non-conference.” The Stallions, who had been shocked in the spring of 2014 by the death of returning running back Cephas McGill, were hit hard by injuries in pre-season, mainly standout fullback-defensive lineman Rashad Chatman and
They are back this season with running back Dennis Leggett, who turned in some remarkable stats during his sophomore season and played big roles in the Stallion’ surge in the TRC. Back J.J. Daniels is also returning with skills on both sides of the football. Gore returns at quarterback and seasoned senior linemen Matt Miller and Brennan Ivey provide much of the leadership upfront. “Spring and summer workouts went well and we Matt Miller feel pretty good about heading the season,” Hutchison said. “There’s still a lot of work quarterback Chase Gore. ahead, but hopefully things Then, sandout linebacker can turn out better for us this Reid Worley sustained an season.” The Stallions will open injury that kept him out of their season on Aug. 21 with some key games. The Stallions come into a home game against East the 2015 season with another Bladen. challenging non-conference schedule.

Vikings hoping to pull some surprises
A 30-25 road win over faroff Elkin in the opening round of the state 1A playoffs helped salvage the 2014 football season at West Columbus. The Vikings came up with several big plays on both sides of the ball that freezing November night in Elkin to knock off the longtime 1A powerhouse Bucking Elks team. A week later, the Vikings made another long playoff trip only to be thoroughly defeated by Alleghany. “It was one of those games where we just kept hanging around and we came up with a big pass interception in the end zone to seal it,” said Jason Jones, who guided the Vikings to a 4-9 record in his first year as WCHS head coach. The Vikings finished Three Rivers Conference play with a 1-6 record. Jones stepped into both the football head coaching job and WCHS athletic director position last year … the first
time for both. The Vikings recorded a pair of wins over East Columbus as well as a victory over Fayetteville Christian. They came close to pulling a Three Rivers Conference upset over St. Pauls and suffered a narrow loss to Trask. “We had trouble stopping people last year,” said Jones, whose squad yielded at least 50 points to four opponents during the 2014 season. “We had a lack of depth as well as a number of injuries at several positions, and that worked against us with the stronger teams we went against. We had a good number of players having to stay on the field for pretty much the whole game The Vikings were also hit by graduation with talented back Rostin Bromell, standout senior lineman Kalyk Banks (Johnson C. Smith signee), closing out their high school careers last fall. Other key losses included wide receiver
Johnny McFadden Xavier Keel and linebacker Tariq Dundy. Johnny McFadden is back at the quarterback spot and Fred Evans is back at his running back and defensive back positions. Evans, who is one of the area’s fastest
