Style Two. Green tricorn, black mask over the eyes, red jacket. The first style of the Dick Turpin jug has the mask up on the brim of the tricorn, and a pistol forms the handle. All of the sizes should have “R.T.” inscribed on the pistol grip, however, it may be more obvious on certain jugs due to the casting variations. This second style of Dick Turpin has the mask covering the eyes, and the handle depicts a horse’s head and neck.

Style One. Blue and gold coloration. Arthur Wellesley (1769 - 1852), the first Duke of Wellington, was a British general and statesman. He led the British forces in the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 and also served as Prime Minister from 1828 - 1830. The first Dick Whittington jug was styled on the character of a poor orphan boy who was employed in a London Kitchen, as described in a play dated 1605. He gave his cat to his employer to sell to earn money, but then ran away to escape his evil employer’s cook who mistreated him. the Bow Bells rang as he fled and seemed to say, “ Turn back, Whittington, Lord Mayor of London.” He obeyed and found that his cat had fetched a huge sum, making a wealthy man. The gladiators were most often slaves or prisoners condemned to fight, which they did to the death using sword, spear or trident. A South African attorney, military man and politician, Jan Christian Smuts (1870 - 1950) served as a member of the British War Cabinet in World War I and was one of the authors of the Covenant of the League of Nations. In 1945, after again serving the Allies in World War II, Smuts is credited with writing the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations.
