THE COLLECTION OF MARIE-CLAUDE LALIQUE (FRENCH, 1935-2003)
THE COLLECTION OF MARIE-CLAUDE LALIQUE (FRENCH, 1935-2003) LIFE & LEGACY
Once upon a time in France, there was a creative spirit who brought beauty to the world through her artistic vision. Her name was Marie-Claude Lalique, and she followed in the illustrious footsteps of her renowned family, leaving her own unique mark on the world of glass.
Marie-Claude Lalique was born into a dynasty of glassmakers and artists, with her grandfather being none other than René Lalique himself, the legendary pioneer of Art Nouveau glass. It was in her blood to create and innovate, and she took this passion to new heights.
With her infectious laughter and boundless enthusiasm, Marie-Claude became known as the “Queen of Crystal” among her friends and admirers. She inherited her grandfather’s love for nature and drew inspiration from the beauty of the world around her. From the delicate petals of a flower to the graceful flight of a bird, Marie-Claude found endless inspiration in the wonders of nature and transformed them into stunning works of art.
With her magical touch, MarieClaude Lalique breathed life into glass, infusing it with elegance and enchantment. She specialized in creating exquisite perfume bottles, capturing the essence of each fragrance in a vessel that was a masterpiece in itself. Her designs were not just mere containers but small sculptures that adorned vanities and made people feel like royalty as they applied their favorite scents.
But Marie-Claude’s talents did not stop at perfume bottles alone. She explored the vast possibilities of glass, bringing her artistic vision to a wide range of creations. From delicate jewelry encrusted with sparkling gems to dazzling chandeliers that illuminated grand ballrooms, Marie-Claude’s work added a touch of glamour and sophistication to every setting.
Marie-Claude Lalique’s legacy continues to shine brightly today, as her designs are treasured by collectors and museums worldwide. Her vision and passion for glass art have left an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring countless artists to push the boundaries of their craft.
Though Marie-Claude is no longer with us, her spirit lives on through the magical pieces she created. The world will forever cherish the memories of this extraordinary woman who brought beauty, joy, and a touch of whimsy to our lives through the graceful art of glass.
HISTORY OF LALIQUE
BY LOUISE IRVINE - WMODA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & CURATORAs urban migration increased in the late 19th century, designers turned to nature as their main source of inspiration. Stylized flowers and organic forms brought nostalgic memories of nature into modern life during the Art Nouveau era. One of the pioneers of this movement was René Lalique, the French jewelry and glass designer. As a child, Lalique explored the fields and forests of rural France, mesmerized by nature’s miracles. He attended school in Paris where he became a skilled draughtsman by the age of 12. He studied botany and his natural talent for drawing insects and flowers proved invaluable in his chosen career. Lalique’s father was a merchant of luxury goods and on his death Lalique was apprenticed to a jeweler. The apex of his jewelry career was the Paris exhibition of 1900 where crowds flocked to see his dramatic designs for stars of the stage, such as Sarah Bernhardt.
Lalique’s innovative use of semi-precious materials in jewelry led him to explore the decorative possibilities of glass. As one reviewer noted, Lalique had ‘’freed us from the tyranny of the diamond.’’ In 1905, Lalique received a commission from Francoise Coty to design perfume bottles and he produced 16 Coty bottles between 1909 and 1913, which revolutionized the perfume industry. To keep up with production, he rented a glass factory in Combs-la-Ville where he also made vases and decorative accessories for the home. Lalique’s stylized motifs continued to be drawn from nature, whether it be dragonflies with their shimmering filigree wings or kingfishers in flight with their spectacular plumage and dazzling colors.
In 1921, Lalique opened his own glassworks at Wingen sur Moder in Alsace, which was an established glass making region. With expert local craftsmen, he perfected different methods of molding relieffigured designs in glass. To make his designs more affordable, he utilized machine production without sacrificing his artistic integrity. Lalique’s stunning vases were made using three main techniques: mold-blowing, mold-pressing and cire perdue, which is blowing into a lost wax mold. He became renowned for his innovative decorative processes combining frosted and clear glass and often included acid etching and applied patina. He developed an array of colors ranging from sea green to sky blue to glowing amber. The cased glass colors were achieved by bonding layers of glass together to create deeper colors and patterned surfaces. Shoals of fish in iridescent colors were a favorite motif for Lalique vases, often swimming among fronds of seaweed. In 1925, Lalique began creating crystal car mascots for radiator caps, which became status symbols on the most prestigious automobiles of his day. More than 30 cast glass mascots were produced, including sleek stylized animals, birds and fish. His beautiful opalescent glass was used to create sensual sculptures, vases, bowls, clocks, dressing table sets, and smoking accessories for the new women of the roaring twenties. The triumph of Lalique’s career as a glassmaker was the Paris Exhibition of 1925, which defined the Art Deco style. Sadly, the demand for luxury goods declined internationally after the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the onslaught of the Great Depression during the 1930s. Lalique permanently closed his factory at Combsla-Ville in 1937 and World War Two forced the temporary closure of his factory at Wingen. René Lalique died in 1945, the day after allied victory was declared, and his son, Marc, reopened the factory. Lalique crystal continues to be made there today.

RENE LALIQUE (FRENCH, 1860-1945) ORIGINAL DRAWINGS, OUROBOROS FISHES
This exceptional study in graphite, ink, and gouache on BFK Rives brown paper were made by Art Nouveau and Art Deco designer and craftsman Rene Lalique. They include two painted circular drawings and a side view of a design for a watch left in graphite. The upper drawing of entwined foliage pattern is framed by warm brown washes. Underneath, Lalique designed three ouroboros fishes that symbolize eternity. Their bodies and fins are painted in a yellow gold tone above coral red washes. The washes of dark brown and washed black form the background that is enhanced with foliage. These Asian influenced motifs became part of the artistic symbols of Lalique, These extraordinary final stage studies are of museum quality and were acquired directly from the private collection of the descendants of Rene Lalique. The drawings are speculated to be preliminary sketches for the Poissons round box, which had double sided pressed glass designs and a nickel interior. Housed in a natural color wooden frame.

A larger circle with parts of the crow’s tail in graphite shows that Lalique selected a closer view than he originally planned. Lalique represents a side view of a the powder box that he connected to the crow study with two parallel lines. These compositions have not been seen publicly. They are of museum quality and were acquired directly from the private collection of the descendants of Rene Lalique. Housed in a natural color wooden frame. Frame size: 9.80”L x 13.40”H x 0.75”W. If purchaser wishes to arrange their own shipping or pick-up of the lot item(s), such arrangements must be arranged and confirmed to Lion and Unicorn within the time period outlined in Paragraph 6 above. With respect to
lot items for which Lion and Unicorn does not provide an in-house shipping quote, upon request we will provide the purchaser with a list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws and CITES regulations. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the purchaser. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.

Unless the sale is specifically and explicitly advertised and announced as “without reserve”, each lot is offered subject to a reserve and the Auctioneer may implement such reserves by bidding through its representatives on behalf of the Consignors. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Lion and Unicorn, below which the lot may not be sold. Bidder acknowledges that a set reserve may not be relative to the estimates. A representative of Lion and Unicorn, including the Auctioneer may execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, unless the auction is advertised or announced as “without reserve”, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise which is not appropriate with respect to the value of such lot.
12. Florida State and County sales tax shall be applied and collected accordingly. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of a State of Florida sales tax exemption prior to the start of the auction, for which they are bidders.
13. A buyer’s premium equal to 25% of the final bid price, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price, will be added to the hammer price. This buyer’s premium is nonrefundable under any circumstance including in the event of a cancellation or a return of any lots purchased for any reason. Any presale bids must be left in writing and approved by Lion and Unicorn via our email at auctions@lionandunicorn. com. The Company’s copy of any such bid shall conclusively be deemed to be the sole evidence of same, and the Company shall not be held responsible for any failure to execute any presale bid.
14. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
15. Lion and Unicorn and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold.
