An Important Portrait of King Charles XV of Sweden and Norway from 1859 to 1872. Artist signed lower right. Measures 32” x 25” including frame, 23” x 17.5” image only. Charles XV also Carl (Carl Ludvig Eugen); Swedish: Karl XV and Norwegian: Karl IV (3 May 1826 - 18 September 1872) was King of Sweden (Charles XV) and Norway, there often referred to as Charles IV, from 8 July 1859 until his death in 1872. Though known as King
Charles XV in Sweden (and also on contemporary Norwegian coins), he was actually the ninth Swedish king by that name, as his predecessor Charles IX (reigned 1604 through 1611) had adopted a numeral according to a fictitious history of Sweden. Charles XV was the third Swedish monarch from the House of Bernadotte. He was the first one to be born in Sweden, and the first to be raised from birth in the Lutheran faith. The only other Emil

Mid-19th century oil on canvas portrait of a handsome upper-middle class man painted in a Realist style. This painting depicts a handsome male sitting on a plain wooden chair, facing the viewer with his arms crossed on his chest. It is painted in a Realist style perfected in Europe and America in the 1850s. The painter removed all superfluous details from the portrait to focus
solely on the sitter. Under his black coat and vest, he wears a white shirt that highlights his refined features and pensive gaze as two rings on his fingers reveal his social status. This painting has been relined and restored to showcase the masterful brushstrokes and handsome subject. There are minimal paint chips on the lower and upper right side of the canvas. Housed in
a gilded wooden frame. Frame size: 20.60”L x 24.80”H. Artwork dimensions: 17.40”L x 21.50”H. Incised signature and date on the lower left: Hofer, 1854.

His hair falls on on his brown overcoat with gold buttons and richly elaborate vest. The light focuses on his forehead
and eyes to emphasize a man of thought. Canvas glued to cardboard and white board. Minimal paint loss throughout. Artwork dimensions: 21.25”L x 26.75” H.
