Framed in a more modern 2 piece glass with brass frame border.The red and black pigments used in making this rare piece have retained a lot of its color vibrancy. It is said that the red pigment used came from crushed cinnabar. A manuscript page in the same manner was sold at Sotheby's in the mid 1970's for a record price of over $100,000.00. It came plain or engraved and this is the engraved set. This pattern was in production from 1932-1979. The lot consists of 12 sugar spoons, 12 Desert/Salad Forks, 12 Dinner knives, 12 Dinner Forks, 6 Soup Spoons, 1 Serving Spoon, 1 Serving Fork, and 1 Ladle, marked "Sterling-Steiff-Reg. on each piece. The lot also includes two small measuring or liquor sterling silver cups, marked Sterling on the bottom. The total weight of the entire lot is 7lbs which equates to approx. 102 troy ounces.With the current spot price at approximately $28 per ounce for pure silver and taking into account that these pieces are Sterling 925 and the that the knives handles are the only Sterling part of the knives the total spot weight is about 92 troy ounces at 88% silver melt value the melt value is approximately $2250.00 for this entire lot. Keeping in mind that this evaluation is simply for the melt down value and not including the use value. These pieces are a very desireable set and the value should be considerably higher than the melt down value when considering what to bid. "Elizabeth (Betsy) Patterson Bonaparte was a native of Baltimore, married the brother of Emperor Napoleon, (later divorced) and a socialite in Baltimore society. Her story is well worth googling. Several movies about her life were made in the early 20th century", history of Betsy was taken from the Steiff company. Excellent condition with only age related wear and no Monograms.

We have calculated the set at approximately 53.5 troy counces of silver. Uniquely crafted and designed; Phoenix and Unicorn carved, black coffee table. Minor scratches.The company was founded in 1858 when George Widdicomb started a cabinet shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company grew and, with twelve employees, moved to a new, larger location. His four sons went into business with him and the company was named George Widdicomb & Sons. All four sons would serve in the American Civil War. The company dissolved in 1863, while all four sons were enlisted. The oldest sons opened a small furniture shop in 1864, with the other two brothers joining them around when the war ended. Brother George Widdicomb died in March, 1866. In 1868 the store had grown considerably and was moved to a new location in Grand Rapids. They had 25 employees. T.F. Richards came into business with the sons on January 1, 1869. They renamed the business Widdicomb Bros. & Richards. They built a larger building and had a capital of $12,000. They formed the Widdicomb Furniture Company on December 1, 1873. Eventually capital would reach $380,000. They had a new building and approximately 150 employees in 1871. At that time, Widdicomb Furniture Company as known for their spindle bed frames. William Widdicomb, who served as President, retired from the company in 1883. In 1915, it was sold to Joseph Griswold, Sr. and Godfrey von Platen. The company would merge with Mueller Furniture Corporation, becoming Widdicomb-Mueller Corporation, in 1950. Ten years later Mueller would split from Widdicomb. In 1970, the company name is acquired by John Widdicomb Company. In 2002, Widdicomb went out of business; design and manufacturing rights for John Widdicomb Company were acquired by Stickley in August 2002.
