The Quad at Whittier has been a local staple and shopping hub since the early 1950’s serving generations of Whittierites with everything from groceries to pet care, clothing to greeting cards and house wares to dining options. It is with fond memories that many of us remember Hinshaw’s Department Store, The Quad’s original proud Madame that opened in 1953 and closed its doors in 1992, but continues to be cherished by many. It was also in 1953 that Mike and Lola Lesa and their two sons Leon and Michael moved from upstate New York to Whittier and became local fixtures. Years later, Leon and Barbara’s daughter Krista, sister Kamey and brother Tony would regularly walk to The Quad to visit the Hinshaw’s candy counter, shop in the store’s Christmas boutique,

walk to Palmer ’s Pets and watch the ladies at annual cake walks inside the enclosed mall. In 1998 Krista accepted a position working for Terramar Retail Centers (GMS Realty) who purchased The Quad in 1996, and began her career assisting the Property Management Team. As of 2007, Krista became the Property Manager in charge of the Carlsbad based company’s Los Angeles portfolio encompassing several shopping centers, including The Quad, and immediately spearheaded efforts to become further involved in the community that has embraced the Center for half a century. As part of this endeavor, Lesa increased the Center’s presence in the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce with marketing in the Business Focus, sponsorship of the annual Hathaway Golf Classic ( w h i c h s h e a n d h e r Te a m “ T h e Green Gophers” golf in each year), sponsorship of the annual Business Expo, attending Wake Up Whittiers and accepting the nomination to serve on the Chamber’s Board of Directors in September 2012. Additionally, The Quad participates in the Lions Sight For Kids event, Whittier’s Relay For Life with the CAPC Believer’s Team, and the City’s Eggstravaganza event

providing an opportunity to give back and become more accessible within the community. In 2010, The Quad received the Chamber’s Whittier Beautiful Award after being refreshed with a new coat of paint in a modern natural palette, and the Center’s Whittier Friends art piece was repainted and rededicated in 2011. Most recently at the Chamber’s 100 Year Anniversary Gala in April, Krista was presented with the prestigious Business of the Year Award. Krista comes from a family dedicated to the service of Whittier. Her father Leon is a local business owner, fellow member of the Whittier Chamber (Leon Lesa’s Handyman Service) and 20 year member of the Whittier Host Lions

Club, and mother Barbara works part time for CAPC, Inc. and is a member of the SOLA Lions. Lesa resides in Echo Park with her fiancé (to-be) Robert Denney (also a Whittier native) and their dog-children Bugsy and Grace, and vacations at their Lake Havasu home when not working. Whenever asked, she always refers to Whittier as home. The Quad is proud to be a member of the Whittier Chamber and reminds community members to shop and dine locally.

Golf tournament provides business connections and unique marketing opportunities Golf tournaments can bring people throughout the community together like no other sporting event and the Whittier Chamber’s Hathaway Golf Classic is no exception. As one of Whittier’s only business-focused tournaments, the event will feature great tournament gifts, a full day of business networking on and off the course, delicious food and creative and popular contests and games. Whether you golf, volunteer or join us at the 19th Hole Mixer, you don’t want to miss the 36th Annual Hathaway Golf Tournament being held on Monday, September 8 at beautiful Friendly Hills Country Club.

“Well over 150 business owners and community members will participate in the Chamber’s Hathaway Golf Classic,” stated Gary Martinez, Hathaway Golf co-chair and owner of The Traveling Traveler. “The tournament’s recurring theme is NETWORKING! We want our guests to leave feeling like they had the opportunity to meet new people and create new leads while enjoying a day on the greens,” added co-chair Tom Rios next Rory McIlroy. Even if you don’t golf from Emeritus at Chateau Whittier. Hope you all are having a great summer! This has certainly been one of our busier summers here at the Whittier Chamber. We have so many great things happening, all of which are bringing us into the home stretch of summer with positive results and events. We successfully completed our 3rd Annual Shop Local Community Expo held at the Whittwood Town Center last month. This was an achievement beyond our

expectations as we had hundreds of representatives and local residents come to stroll the event and learn about our local businesses, while they enjoyed music, raffle prize giveaways and tasty free food available to all. Take a look at this month’s centerfold for highlights from the event. It’s now time to prepare for our upcoming Annual Hathaway Golf Classic to be held at Friendly Hills Country Club on Monday, September 8. Sponsorships are coming in, golfers are signing up and the Chamber staff and Hathaway committee are preparing for another spectacular golf event. The proceeds from this scramble tournament are delivered straight back into Chamber programs, seminars, information and resources to help our businesses succeed. This is one of our largest and

most celebrated events of the year, and now is the time to take advantage of the exceptional marketing benefits available at the tournament. The big golf ball drop is back again and is always a highlight of the afternoon. Not a golfer? Not a problem! Join us for the 19th Hole Mixer beginning at 4 p.m. for networking, prizes, awards and dinner. We are thankful that this summer has been full of so many great opportunities to take advantage of like networking, gaining new leads and enjoying our community. It has also been a time to enjoy the beautiful California weather, our families and friends. I hope you’ve all enjoyed some of the lazy, hazy days of summer and are getting ready to gently transition into the fall season. Until next month‌ stay cool!

Richard Scrivanich If you serve on the board of directors of one or more corporations, there are a number of tax rules of which you should be aware. In your role as a corporate director, you are considered to be an independent contractor, not an employee of the corporation. This fact has several important tax consequences, including the following: Directors’ income and deductions. The fees that you receive as a corporate director are subject to current income taxation. However, because you are considered to be in the “business of serving as a corporate director, you can deduct your ordinary and necessary expenses of carrying on this business. For example, you can deduct awayfrom-home travel expenses that relate to your duties as a director. These are business expenses and not itemized deductions, so they aren’t subject to any limitations based on your income. However, if you are also an investor in the corporation, your

„ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „ „

expenses may be treated as investment expenses rather than business expenses. In that case, they will be miscellaneous itemized deductions, and will only be deductible to the extent that they exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income. Keogh retirement plans. You may be able to postpone paying tax on your directors’ fee income by making deductible contributions to a pension or profit-sharing plan for self-employed individuals known as a Keogh plan. Deductible contributions of up to 20% of this income—up to a maximum of $52,000 in 2014—may be made to these types of Keogh plans. Your participation in a Keogh plan would be in addition to any qualified pension and profit-sharing plan in which you already participate as an employee. Participation in an employee plan wouldn’t limit the amount you could contribute and deduct under a Keogh plan. Self-employment tax. As an independent contractor, you will be subject to self-employment tax on your directors’ fee income. Self-employment tax is imposed in addition to income tax, but you can deduct half of your self-employment tax as an adjustment to income. Self-employment tax consists of a Social Security portion and a Medicare portion. The Social Security tax is imposed at 12.4%, but only on selfemployment income up to a certain amount. For 2014, it applies to the first $117,000 of self-employment income. However, if you have salary income of at least $117,000, you won’t be liable

for Social Security tax on your directors’ fees. The Medicare tax is imposed at 2.9% on all of your self-employment income, whether or not you also have salary income. An additional 0.9% Medicare tax (for a total of 3.8%) is imposed on self-employment income in excess of $250,000 for joint returns; $125,000 for married taxpayers filing separate returns; and $200,000 in all other cases. Trust fund penalty. Corporate directors should bear in mind their potential exposure to liability for the trust fund recovery penalty. “Trust fund taxes include withheld income tax and Social Security tax that the corporation deducts from employees’ wages and pays over to the government. When these taxes aren’t properly collected and paid over, the persons responsible for collection and payment are liable for 100% of the shortfall. Obviously, the amount of this penalty can add up very quickly. Corporate directors aren’t automatically liable for the trust fund penalty if taxes aren’t paid. The critical issue is who had the authority and the duty to see to it that the trust fund taxes were paid. However, there have been cases in which directors were held liable for the penalty, so this possibility shouldn’t be ignored. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

City Of Whittier

UPDATE

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Cathy Warner

The Whittier City Council would like to thank Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon, who partnered with the American Red Cross and the California Earthquake Authority to host an Emergency Preparedness Town Hall meeting last month at the Uptown Senior Center. Those of us here during the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake know all too well the importance of being prepared. We learned that disasters and emergencies can occur at any moment; however, by being prepared we can better ensure we survive and recover quickly. Thanks again to Assemblymember Calderon and the Red Cross for this important reminder on being prepared for emergencies At the annual State of the City event hosted by the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, we were pleased to provide information on the many development projects underway. We welcome a number of new retailers and restaurants coming to Whittier such as Buffalo Wild Wings at the Whittwood Town Center, Dunkin’ Donuts at the former Arby’s site, the rapidly moving LA Fitness at the former Chrysler Jeep dealer site, Corner Bakery Café, Popeye’s Chicken, and Pieology. In addition to the commercial projects, there are a few housing developments in the planning stages throughout the city, including Oakmont Senior Living Facility at the former Harris Buick Pontiac GMC site on Whittier Boulevard. As City Manager Jeff Collier mentioned at the State of the City address, “Let’s make some dust!” In other economic development news, the Fred C. Nelles site draft environmental impact report (EIR) is expected to be available by the end of the month. The community will

have an opportunity to review and comment specifically on the potential environmental impacts before the final EIR is completed. Public hearings will be held by the Historic Resources Commission, Planning Commission, and City Council this coming fall to provide the community an opportunity to comment on the project as a whole. Brookfield Homes has submitted plans for a mixed-use development to include up to 750 homes and approximately 200,000 square feet of commercial development. The Council is pleased with the progress at the Fred C. Nelles site as it will provide a new major development project on the west side of town. Many of our residents have enjoyed great entertainment at the Summer Concerts in the Park that end midmonth. The Concerts are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at Central Park and Thursdays at Parnell Park through August 14th. Visit the city website at www.cityofwhittier.org or call 567-9430 for the concert schedule. Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for another successful Shop Local Showcase last month at the Whittwood Town Center. The dedication and hard work of the Chamber staff, Board of Directors and the many businesses that participated are greatly appreciated. The Local Showcase is a fun and valuable event for the entire community that serves as a reminder to shop Whittier first. Please keep in mind that sales tax generated in Whittier stays in the city, with 1% of all sales tax going directly into the city’s General Fund. This money helps fund public safety, community services, street maintenance, and other important services. For example, if you take your children shopping for back to school clothes and spend $500, the city’s General Fund will receive $5 which can help fund summer programs for youth at our local parks. Please consider shopping Whittier as you prepare for the back to school shopping season.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Students create Outdoor Environmental Education Center Summer school biology students at La Serna High School are taking their lessons outside this year as they enjoyed the school’s new Outdoor Environmental Education Center (OEEC) that features a wide variety of plants, animals and ecosystems to study. The OEEC is a football-field sized facility near the school’s tennis courts that was created by La Serna High School students, said biology teacher Veronica Morales. During the last two years, the students have transformed a dilapidated greenhouse and the spaces that surround it into a vibrant place for hands-on learning, she said. Students are learning urban gardening techniques by building and maintaining 18 raised planters with edible plants such as carrots, artichokes, beets, chili peppers, lavender, potatoes, herbs, sweet peas, leeks, onions and squash. But it’s about far more than growing plants, Morales said. “Students built the OEEC to be a place of ongoing research and a resource for all science classes,” Morales said. “It is an actively growing lab and it will be useful now, especially as we undertake the new Common Core science standards.” For example, biology and environmental science students conducted extensive labs and research including worm farms that they used to learn about symbiotic relationships. They also grew and studied bacteria and fungi. And by raising chickens, the

ENROLLING NOW & FOR AUGUST 2014 Students assist in caring for the chickens that live in La Serna’s OEEC students learned about integrated pest management for their agriculture work. Biome boxes allow students to study specific species of plants and animals. During the last three weeks of school, the college prep biology class built a pond in order to study aquatic ecosystems. And students are hoping to create a butterfly pavilion with 1,000 plants to assist the Monarch butterflies that are declining in numbers due to pesticides and the loss of their habitat. Students were creative about repurposing items around campus for the center and raised money for the project throughout the school year. They and their parents volunteered many hours of their time to the project. The students also received donations of plants and supplies from a variety of businesses and organizations including Sylmar High School, Fresh and Easy and Cliff Bar. But retired teacher David Karp has gone above and beyond by donating planting beds, soil, worms, and information as a volunteer expert gardener. After learning how to conduct laboratory experiments in their center and do technical writing to document their conclusions, students said they were well-prepared for their Advanced Placement tests that are now requiring students to demonstrate their knowledge by analyzing data on the spot. “During the test, I was able to recall what I had learned in the field and apply what I had learned,” said Gillian Plant, a La Serna senior. “What we learn at the OEEC is much more comprehensive and goes way beyond what we can learn from our textbooks alone.”

Golf tournament provides business connections and unique marketing opportunities

The 36th Annual Hathaway Golf Classic is expected to sell out! To secure your space in the golf tournament or at the 19th Hole Mixer, visit www.whittierchamber.com or call (562) 698-9554. There are special incentive packages for chamber members who have joined in the last year! Call Natalie for more details at (562) 698-9554.

FOR THE GOLFERS: The cost to participate in the 36th Annual Hathaway Golf Classic is only $225 per golfer ($285 with a tournament package) and includes green fees, cart, tournament gifts, lunch, awards banquet and mixer, as well as several new and exciting on-course games with great opportunities to win! Foursomes are $900, and, if you want some extra marketing for your business, become an Eagle Sponsor for $1350 (includes a foursome, 4 tournament packages, a tee sign and additional marketing). Golfers can start their day by warming up for their round in the challenging Putting Contest. Attending the 19th Hole Mixer and awards banquet is a great way to end the day and will feature the suspenseful and exciting helicopter golf ball drop, a delicious Friendly Hills Country Club buffet, exciting raffle prizes and more opportunities to win.

NOT A GOLFER? Can’t get away for a day of golf? Come network at the 19th Hole Mixer sponsored by The Quad at Whittier. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join our golfers at the 19th Hole Mixer for only $40 per person! The mixer begins at 4 p.m. on the patio overlooking the picturesque golf course and will feature cocktails, business networking, a delicious Friendly Hills buffet dinner and a seat at the tournament awards banquet. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch the popular $2,000 Golf Ball Drop along with many other perks. More importantly, attending the 19th Hole Mixer grants you access to networking with over 150 golfers, City officials and corporate representatives who attend the Hathaway Golf Classic. Information on tickets to the 19th Hole Mixer can be found online at www.whittierchamber.com.

WIN $2,000 IN THE GOLF BALL DROP! One of the most popular and exciting aspects of the Hathaway Golf Classic is the $2000 Golf Ball Drop. This cash prize game is open to both golfers and non-golfers and features the chance of winning up to $2,000! Here’s how it works: purchase a numbered Hathaway golf ball from the Whittier Chamber for $25 (or 5 balls for $100). At the 19th Hole Mixer, a helicopter will hover over the golf course and drop all the purchased golf balls over the green. Whichever ball(s) fall into the designated hole wins the cash prize! Multiple winners will split the prize. There will be chances to win additional cash prizes if your ball lands in one of five pre-set circles near the hole. Purchase your Hathaway golf ball today – you could win $2,000! Balls can be purchased online at www.whittierchamber.com. Winners need not be present.

You don’t have a marketing mailing system that clearly communicates the value of what you offer A consistent e-Newsletter or email campaign can assist with getting the message out to potential customers. Why not offer new customer specials or give them useful tips? You can also direct them to your website to view your products or services.

Your website is not set-up to do most of the work for you Does your business have a website that properly communicates your message about what you are selling or offering? Is there a way for visitors to easily find your place of location and hours as well as ask questions? Do you have a mobile website? Having a website that is properly set up with a user friendly layout and call to action tools allows for business owners to increase their chance to connect with potential customers, which in turn will increase their sales.

Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the ProAdjuster and is the latest, state-of-the-art technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” The ProAdjuster can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including medicare. Dr. Yani says that “The secret to the ProAdjuster lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is Dr. Yani uses the ProAdjuster to and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. analyze a patient’s spine and pin-point areas of nerve impingement syndrome Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, causing malfunction and pain. all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be wary. The ProAdjuster is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have any of the following conditions, the ProAdjuster may be the answer you’ve been looking for... • Neck & Shoulder pain • Poor Circulation • Low back pain • Sciatic pain • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Arthritis • Headaches • High Cholesterol • TMJ • Fibromyalgia • Scoliosis • High Blood Pressure • Sports Injuries • Planter Fascitis • Knee or hip pain • Diabetes Treatment with the ProAdjuster is consistent, measurable and extremely gentle. Call Isabel at our office today and mention this article to receive a FREE ProAdjuster analysis to pin-point your problem areas and to see how the ProAdjuster can help. Call within the next seven days and you will also receive a complimentary examination that can show the areas of your stress and how it’s affecting your body. Call (562) 698-1275 today to reserve your free ProAdjuster Analysis Scan. This technological marvel can help you return to a healthier lifestyle. You may no longer have to live with a persistent, painful condition. Call us today! "I thought living in pain was a way of life. I was taking 600 mg of Motrin 2x/day because my tailbone was so painful I could not sit. I had to lay in backseat of Jeep coming home from vacation. I went to Friends Chiropractic as a skeptic, and now I am a true believer. By the 4th visit I was becoming a new person and stopped taking Motrin by day 5. Now I can sit for dinner, I can sit through church, I CAN SIT in the front seat of my Jeep! Dr. Yani is top notch. She listens and answers questions, never ever rushes through anyone. Her staff is friendly and very professional. I'm so grateful I found them. Thank you Dr. Yani for my treatments and Isabel for being so organized. I highly recommend ProAdjuster treatments to anyone sick and tired of living in pain!” ~Jessica Moreno

WAKE UP WHITTIER Whittier Chamber board member Carolyn Reggio of CAPC, Inc. thanked Catering by Herach & Ara for sponsoring the monthly networking breakfast

Whittier Chamber President Shannon Gimbel-Hammer with Shannon G’s Flowers presented CUSoCal representative Michelle Hunter with a certificate of appreciation for hosting the July Wake Up Whittier breakfast

Marilyn Neece of the Intercommunity Counseling Center and local dentist Dr. Sudick enjoyed their Wake Up Whittier experience at Credit Union of Southern California last month

Dear friends and business partners, On the day of our ribbon cutting ceremony, I was asked by several people, “How is your office different from other real estate companies?” First off, we are blessed to have so many great real estate companies in our community that are run and operated by brokers that are my friends and people I highly respect, and we do provide many of the same services. The meaning of Sharpstone is exactly what it implies: we are sharp and rock solid. Sharp stands for focus, consistency, professionalism, confidence and positive attitude. Stone stands for integrity, unity, agreement and creating a solid foundation. These are the core values that our family inherited from my parents and grandparents. Our company principles are God, family and community. Our company is independent and family owned, not a franchise. My main focus as a broker, along with my staff, is to represent our clients with outstanding personal service, to go above and beyond the standards to achieve their goals and dreams, and to treat every client as a person and not just another transaction. I highly value my agents and I will make sure they are professional, knowledgeable, ethical, consistent and maintain a positive attitude. My company has three categories for our agents: the new licensee starts as an Executive, then they excel to Gold, and finally become Diamonds. To make sure our agents are successful, I personally teach them and make sure they have access to up-to-date training and tools for developing strong skills and the knowledge necessary tto not only succeed, but to thrive in any market. I provide them with the support they nee need to stay motivated, happy and consistent. I am eexcited, energized, and confident that our company, although small, is mighty. We will represent our people and commun community well; I believe in God and with God everything is possible possible. Thank you for your continued support and friendly referral f l We look forward to serving you soon! referrals. Gil Rodriguez President, Broker/Owner

Testimonial: Hear what our members are saying... The Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce is truly the best! 10+ years ago I decided to entertain the idea of finding out why people make a fuss about chambers of commerce… It took me a while to fit in, but I kept coming and meeting new people that are now an amazing part of my life. They allow me to lift them up and encourage me to grow; even colleagues in the same profession look out for and help each other. Whittier folks, especially our chamber members, ambassadors, board members and residents in the community, are so loyal to one another. Thank you to all who have made my move to Whittier such a blessing! Helping others grow their businesses has been a delightful part of my life and, in return, I am keeping busy each day too!

Whittier Art Crawl Festival coming this September Explore the excitement and passion of local art lovers on Saturday, September 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Whittier’s Historic Uptown Area. The festival is a place where the artisan and foodie communities can come together and be tantalized by all the senses. Share, meet, buy, eat and drink in the experience of the creative world. The goal of the Whittier Art Crawl is to strengthen the arts in Whittier and surrounding communities. The focus is on supporting and enriching the art culture by creating opportunities for artists to showcase their work. The Art Crawl Festival sets itself apart by providing a new scope for emerging artists and art organizations that live and work in the community and neighboring cities. The “Whittier Art Crawl Festival” is a one day art-a-fair to experience innovative visual artists, gifted musicians, dancing performers, and the culinary creators living in Whittier and in the surrounding areas. The festival will bring a variety of artistic enlightenment

to our community by showcasing art in public places through performing street artisans, pop-up galleries, and the culinary arts brick-and-mortar. Each participating Uptown eatery will transform their space into a popup gallery or will feature an artist or performer and offer great food for a pub crawl pairing. Each participating business, retail shop, and boutique will transform their space into a pop-up gallery featuring an artist, musician, or a sidewalk chalk art display. Free art and music performances will take place on multiple stages. The Whittier Art Crawl Festival will take place on Greenleaf Avenue between Wardman & Hadley, and on Philadelphia Street between Bright and Comstock. Proceeds will help support grants and scholarships for local artists, students, and art organizations, as well as future festivals. For more information about the Art Crawl and other cultural arts programs and events, visit www.uptowncrawlers.com.
