To your right, the fireplace catches your eye in the bistro, where the aroma of coffee brewing and freshly baked cookies cooling entices your senses. Their concierge, who is at the community to answer your questions, provide information about the day’s activities and dining selections, or assist you in making an appointment, welcomes you. Further ahead – just past the grand staircase – the comfortable and welcoming living room awaits with another large fireplace, numerous comfortable seating areas, and floor to ceiling windows to let in the natural light. Just off to the right of the living room is the warm and comfortable library, where a chess game or card game may be in progress in front of a third fireplace. Just down the wide hallway is the activities room, where a painting class, entertainer, or a fun game of Bingo is taking place. Oakmont also offers exclusive excursions, including wine tasting in Temecula, dining on Balboa Bay, day trips to the Arboretum, the Aquarium, and the Cerritos Performing Art Center for plays and musical events. The community also boasts a Wellness Center, complete with a large gym with

As a florist I believe that flowers say a lot about a person and are a great form of self expression. Whether you are giving them as a gift or displaying them in your office or home, flowers can speak volumes about your personality and style. Read on to see what different types of flowers say about you and how you can use your special character traits to get more involved in the Chamber! Daisies are cheerful and optimistic flowers that indicate you cherish friendships, loyalty and making others smile. You have a knack for making people feel good, have an infectious

energy and an adventurous spirit. If you are drawn to daisies you might be a great candidate for the Ambassadors Committee. The Ambassadors serve as greeters at many of the events and help guide and mentor new members to the chamber. Roses indicate you value romance and you appreciate tradition. You always strive for perfection and to bring out the best in others. You seek relationships that are deep and meaningful. People who like roses might also enjoy the tradition and ceremony at the Silver Shield Awards Banquet and Appreciation Dinner honoring the brave men and women of the Whittier Police Department. If the exotic orchid appeals to you, it may mean you are a worldly and experienced person. You love mystery and naturally draw other people to you with your one-of-a-kind appeal. You cultivate a small but close circle of strong friendships.

If you love orchids you should definitely attend Tasty Tuesday each month where you will be able to enjoy food from a variety of Chamber restaurants while networking with new people in an intimate seating environment. Irises symbolize you are imaginative and creative. You enjoy exploration and change and are very open to new experiences. You are easy to talk to, honest, kind and others value your opinions! People who love irises might enjoy participating in the Chamber’s wildly successful Business Expo in January and Shop Local Community Expo in July. Both give you the chance to “show off your business and creatively market your products and services to the public. If lilies are your favorite flower it means you are a very authoritative but nurturing person. You tend to take care of others. You take pride in your Continued on page 18

$ TAX TIPS Commuting Expenses to Temporary Job Locations

Richard Scrivanich Did you know that you can deduct “commutingâ€? expenses between your home and temporary job locations? Daily transportation costs between your home and a regular work location are nondeductible commuting expenses. However, you may be able to deduct costs of going to and from your home and a temporary (not regular) job location. This deduction is allowed if your work fits one of the following descriptions: •

You have one or more regular places of business outside your home, but sometimes travel to temporary work locations in the same trade or business.

•

You sometimes travel to a temporary work location outside the metropolitan area in which you live and normally work.

Generally speaking, employment at a work location is temporary if it is realistically expected to last (and does in fact last) for no more than a year. So, for example, if you have a regular workplace, but you are assigned to another location for three months, your new work location is considered a temporary one. This means that you will be able to deduct your commuting expenses to the temporary location. Sometimes a temporary location can turn into a regular one. This happens when your realistic expectation changes, so that work at a location that had been expected to last for a year or less is now expected to last for more than a year. Assume, for example, that a three-month assignment to a work location becomes permanent. In that case, your commuting expenses to that location won’t be deductible after the date when your realistic expectation changed, even if the location is outside of your metropolitan area.

You must be able to substantiate the auto expenses that you claim through adequate records, such as a log or diary. You can either use the standard mileage rate or deduct your actual expenses. If your employer reimburses your commuting expenses, you needn’t report the reimbursements as income if they are made under a so-called “accountable plan. An accountable plan is one that reimburses only deductible business expenses, requires you to substantiate your expenses, and requires you to return amounts in excess of your substantiated expenses. If the plan isn’t an accountable plan, the reimbursement must be reported as income, and your deductible expenses must be claimed as employee business expenses. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

City Of Whittier

UPDATE

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Cathy Warner

This month we will continue to see progress with the Fred C. Nelles project. Now that the environmental impact report (EIR) has been completed, public hearings will begin on February 3 with the Historic Resources Commission and the Planning Commission on February 9. These public hearings will provide community members an opportunity to comment on the project as a whole. The public is encouraged to participate in this process in order for Brookfield Homes to build a project that reflects the community’s interests. The proposed development at Nelles will include a mixed-use project that will include up to 750 homes and approximately 200,000 square feet of retail/commercial development.

In other development news, Oakmont Senior Living on Whittier Boulevard just west of College Avenue (the former Harris Automotive site) has made significant progress on their Craftsmanstyle facility. Driving north on College Avenue from Whittier Boulevard, one can get a better look at the beautifully designed facility. At Whittier Boulevard and Catalina Avenue, grading has begun in preparation for the 76 luxury apartment homes to be constructed which will include an onsite manager. Also, the City has been in communication with a developer regarding the former Saturn site at the northwest corner of Whittier Boulevard and Michigan Avenue. While the project is in the very early planning stages, we can look forward to more new commercial development coming soon. Many business owners are probably aware that in early 2012, the Governor eliminated redevelopment in the state of California which was the City’s primary tool to assist businesses and encourage new community development. Under the redevelopment dissolution laws,

the state allowed the City of Whittier to retain almost $26 million in pre2011 redevelopment bond funds. This amount, when spent, will be the largest investment in Whittier infrastructure in years. The redevelopment bond funds provide an opportunity for the City to improve dated water and sewage lines, upgrade traffic infrastructure to facilitate development at the Fred C. Nelles site, and implement some of the improvements called for in the Uptown Specific Plan such as the construction of a new parking structure. Last month the Bond Expenditure Subcommittee of the City Council met with community stakeholders to develop priorities for the bond funds. The Council will make final recommendations on priorities this month. It is expected the selected priorities will have a long-term positive impact for the community and provide the infrastructure necessary for future development. Later this month, the community is invited to attend the 17th Annual Silver Shield Awards Banquet and

Appreciation Dinner in honor of the Whittier Police Department. The Whittier City Council agrees with the Chamber’s motto that a “safe community is a prosperous community.” Residents and businesses consistently benefit from the professionalism and excellence of the WPD. If you are unable to attend, please consider sponsoring this special community event which honors those who help protect us. The event is scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Pacific Palms Conference Center in Industry. For more information, contact the Whittier Chamber at (562) 698-9554. Finally, congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for a successful Business Expo last month. Hundreds of business owners took advantage of the opportunity to network and make new contacts at the Radisson Hotel in Uptown. The Chamber staff, Board of Directors, and the many business volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure a fun and valuable event for the entire community.

Popular Rio Hondo College Nursing Assistant Program Offers Advanced Training Classes College Boasts 100 Percent Pass Rate for State CAN Exams for Four Consecutive Cycles

Why Successful People Never Bring Smartphones Into Meetings You are annoying your boss and colleagues any time you take your phone out during meetings, says new research from USC’s Marshall School of Business, and if you work with women and people over forty, they’re even more perturbed by it than everyone else. The researchers conducted a nationwide survey of 554 full-time working professionals earning above $30K and working in companies with at least 50 employees. They asked a variety of questions about smartphone use during meetings and found: • • • •

Rio Hondo College nursing assistant students hold up their certificates after passing the fall 2014 state certification exam. This is the fourth consecutive class to record a perfect passing rate on the test.

Rio Hondo College, home to one of the state’s most successful community college nursing assistant certification programs, offers a rare opportunity for nursing assistants to deepen their training through a pair of special programs. The programs offer for-credit training in the home health and acute care fields through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience structured so students can also take other classes toward their earning degrees. “Programs like this are rare at the community college level,” said Nursing Instructor Patricia Luna, who runs the programs. “They can give students a leg up in their careers and in their pursuit of advanced degrees.” Luna, a registered nurse with a master’s in nursing science as well as certificates in oncology and public health nursing, launched the certificated nursing assistant (CNA) program at Rio Hondo in 2008. That first year, 15 students enrolled in a 16-week training course offered once a year. But the program quickly swelled to capacity, with 90 students now taking the course in fall and spring, thanks in part to a grant provided by the Arthur Rupe Foundation. The program is also highly effective. In each of the last four certification testing cycles, 100 percent of Rio Hondo’s students sitting for the state-administered exam passed the test. The most recent exams were given in December. “It’s really a credit to the students – their diligence and application of what they’ve been taught,” Luna said. Now, Luna is hoping to expand

access to Rio Hondo’s increasingly popular home health aide and acute care programs, which are open to community members who possess CNA status. The home health aide course emphasizes rehabilitative nursing care, family relationships and the understanding the impact of long-term illness on the family as well as the client. Rio Hondo students conduct clinical work at El Encanto Healthcare and Habilitation Center in Industry. Students who pass the course will receive state certification for home health aides. The acute care course emphasizes medical/surgical needs, orthopedics, pediatrics and obstetrics. The class includes communication, patient observation, reporting and recording training as well as reinforcement of the Certified Nursing Assistant basic-care procedures. Students conduct clinical work at Beverly Hospital in Montebello as well as at PIG Health and Whittier Hospital in Whittier. Increasingly, California’s highly crowded nursing degree programs are seeking students who have already CNA and other basic training levels, Luna said. CNA status also helps boost a student’s chance of enrolling in Rio Hondo College’s popular nursing programs. In addition, high school students who have earned their CNA status are eligible for fee waivers at Rio Hondo, eliminating all program costs aside purchase of uniforms and physicals. For more information on Rio Hondo College’s certificated nursing programs, go to http://www.riohondo.edu/healthscience-and-nursing.

86% think it’s inappropriate to answer phone calls during meetings 84% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails during meetings 66% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails even during lunches offsite The more money people make the less they approve of smartphone use.

The study also found that Millennials are three times more likely than those over 40 to think that smartphone use during meetings is okay, which is ironic considering Millennials are highly dependent upon the opinions of their older colleagues for career advancement. TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people worldwide and found that Millennials have the lowest self-awareness in the workplace, making them unlikely to see that their smartphone use in meetings is harming their careers. Why do so many people—especially successful people—find smartphone use in meetings to be inappropriate? When you take out your phone it shows a: • Lack of respect. You consider the information on your phone to be more important than the conversation at hand, and you view people outside of the meeting to be more important than those sitting right in front of you. • Lack of attention. You are unable to stay focused on one thing at a time. • Lack of listening. You aren’t practicing active listening, so no one around you feels heard. • Lack of power. You are like a modern-day Pavlovian dog who responds to the whims of others through the buzz of your phone. • Lack of self-awareness: You don’t understand how ridiculous your behavior looks to other people. • Lack of social awareness: You don’t understand how your behavior affects those around you. I can’t say I’m surprised by the USC study’s findings. My company coaches leaders using 360° assessments that compare their self-perception to how everyone else sees them. Smartphone use in meetings is one of the most common coworker complaints. It’s important to be clear with what you expect of others. If sharing this article with your team doesn’t end smartphone use in meetings, take a page out of the Old West and put a basket by the conference room door with an image of a smart phone and the message, “Leave your guns at the door.” ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Kevin Kruse is a NYT bestselling author, accomplished speaker, and expert in employee engagement and leadership. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Jane Rosenberger, Age 97 The Lady who Loves to Sew From The Flag Shop in Whittier Meet Jane Rosenberger: a wife, a mother of 3, grandmother of 5, and great grandmother of 4. A master of her craft, a teacher, a storyteller, an entrepreneur, a caterer, a wonderful friend who has spent her career (spanning 8 decades) doing what she has always enjoyed doing. Jane started sewing at the age of 8, taught by her own mother. She was sewing wardrobes for the children of family friends by age 14. After graduating in 1936 from Hamilton High School in Culver City, she entered Los Angeles Trade Technical College for formal training in sewing and tailoring. Then, in 1938, she landed her first job at Columbia Pictures movie studio in Los Angeles and was trained in making wardrobes used in Hollywood films. Some of the stars she made clothing for were Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Temple, Jean Arthur, and Spring Byington to name a few.

Jane also worked in dress shops in Beverly Hills over a 15 year period, often doing contract work for Edith Head or private accounts. Jane worked on the wedding gown of Elizabeth Taylor for her first marriage to Richard Burton. She also worked on clothing for the stars going on USO tours during WWII, many times making wardrobes for the Andrews Sisters who traveled with Bob Hope. In 1944 Jane and a friend decided to travel to the east coast so they could enjoy adventures in NYC. They opened their own small dress shop in East Orange, New Jersey where they made custom gowns and dresses. Back on the west coast and during the time of WWII, she met Richard Rosenberger, a Navy man stationed on the USS Maryland in the South Pacific. Dick and Jane did get married during the war, in 1945, and she planned her wedding and made her own wedding

dress during a three-day period before Dick left on a deployment. After the war, Jane and Dick moved to Whittier and in 1951 purchased their home on Cullen Street near what is now the Whittwood Mall. They loved living in Whittier and raised their 3 children in that same house. Dick and Jane were married for 64 years before Dick, a Pearl Harbor survivor, passed away in 2009. The Silver Shield Awards Ceremony will highlight the accomplishments and outstanding efforts of active officers, civilian staff and volunteers. Awards will be given in multiple categories to deserving individuals and 4 retirees will be honored for their service to our community. “This year’s program will recognize the unique men and women of the Whittier Police Department and the extraordinary things they have done this past year to protect the cities of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs,” stated former Community Relations Officer Brad White. This year’s event will feature a police expo and special photo booth area inside the beautiful ballroom at the Pacific Palms Resort. Musical entertainment will once again be provided by Ernie Hernandez from Calendar Entertainment and photography by Tom Guerrero of Say Cheese Photography. “It is an honor for the Whittier Chamber to host this special event again this year,” stated Chamber Board President Shannon GimbelHammer from Shannon G’s Flowers. “We are proud of our partnership with the Whittier Police Department and it is our privilege to coordinate this event to highlight all that they do for our community on a daily basis,” she explained. The Whittier Police Department provides a variety of law enforcement services to the citizens of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. The Department is comprised of the Patrol, Investigation, Support Services and Administration Divisions. The Police Department features a great team comprised of 120 sworn police officers and 50 civilian staff. One of the outstanding programs developed by the WPD is the highly successful Community Based Policing Program. A cornerstone of this model program is a partnership between the Police Department, city residents and businesses to produce a high quality of life for all citizens. “The Police Department’s relationship with the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the surrounding business community is one that is strong

and respected. This relationship enables our department to serve our citizens and has bolstered the partnership that drives effective enforcement efforts. The men and women of the Whittier Police Department feel extremely fortunate to enjoy this relationship with our community partners,” explained Chief Jeff Piper. The Silver Shield event is designed to give businesses and individuals the opportunity to say thank you to our police department. New this year is the chance for residents and business owners to nominate an officer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help. Nominations can be sent to info@whittierchamber.com and must include your contact information, the name of the officer(s) and a brief description of the incident or event. The Silver Shield committee will select an officer from the submitted nominations and he or she will be presented with a Community Service Award at the event. “There are many ways to participate, but I want to personally invite you to be a Friend Sponsor which covers the cost for an officer to attend the event at no charge,” stated Silver Shield chair Sue Dean from Notary Signing Network. Friend Sponsorships are only $100 and include a listing in the dinner program (which goes home with over 500 guests) and recognition in the Business Focus Newspaper. There are additional ways to participate in the Silver Shield event. Corporate Sponsorships range from $900-$1500 and include a table at the dinner and event marketing. Individual tickets can be purchased for only $100 and include a 6 p.m. cocktail reception, networking, and dinner and awards beginning at 7 p.m. If you’re unable to attend, but still want to show your support, you can purchase advertising space in the tribute program. “It is very rewarding to be involved with this event and I encourage the community and our members to find ways to participate this year,” stated Gimbel-Hammer. “A safe community is a prosperous community and we thank the Whittier Police Department for keeping us safe,” she added. Governor’s Budget Plan Saves, Pays Down Debt Includes New Approach to Workforce Development Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has outlined a “carefully balanced” budget plan for 2015–16, demonstrating his commitment to keep the state on a steady fiscal path. Last month, California Finance Director Michael Cohen presented a detailed analysis of the proposed budget at a California Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Forum. The same day, a report from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office described the Governor ’s budget priorities as “generally prudent.” Highlights of Cohen’s presentation appear in the latest CalChamber Capitol Report video available at youtube.com/ calchamber. In his presentation, Cohen discussed budget priorities, including continued investments in key programs, saving money in the rainy day fund and paying down state debts. “It’s a good budget that’s still in balance… we are continuing to invest in the key programs that we’ve made major decisions on over the last few years, but we are also saving money and paying down our debts,” Cohen told luncheon attendees.

Saving Money/Paying Down Debt Director Cohen pointed to CalChamber ’s efforts as key to securing passage of Proposition 2 last November. The measure amended the State Constitution to strengthen the requirement for a budget reserve and to pay down budget-related debt. Cohen said the state’s rainy day fund will have a balance of $2.8 billion by the end of the year. Having the fund in place will obviate the need for higher taxes during the next recession. “The way Proposition 2 works is that if capital gains continue to rise, if the stock market continues to do what it’s been doing the last few months, and that is certainly a possibility, more money will go into the rainy day fund,” Cohen explained. This means an additional $1.2 billion from Proposition 2 funds will go to paying off loans from special funds and past liabilities from Proposition 98; the remaining $1 billion in deferrals to schools and community colleges will be repaid; and the last payment on the $15 billion in Economic Recovery Bonds borrowed to cover budget deficits from as far back as 2002 will be made. Finally, the money will allow the state to

repay local governments $533 million in mandate reimbursements. The result, says Cohen, is that a year from now, school finance will be back to a place where “when schools spend the money, they will receive the money in the same fiscal year.”

Retiree Health Care Previous budgets dealt with state pensions and teachers’ retirement. This year’s budget deals with the third piece of the state’s retirement liability—retiree health care costs. “If California does nothing, the unfunded liability will exceed $300 billion by 2047,” Cohen explained. “That’s really the next major retirement liability the administration is looking to tackle,” Cohen said. “We are going to use everything in our tool kit to both contain health care cost inflation and also start setting aside money so that both employees and the state contribute equally.” State health care benefits for retired employees remain one of the fastest growing areas of the state budget. In 2001, retiree health benefits made up 0.6% of the General Fund budget ($458 million) but today absorb 1.6% ($1.9 billion). Without action, the state’s unfunded liability will grow to $100 billion by 2020–21 and $300 billion by 2047–48. The budget addresses the need to develop solutions to correct this problem.

Workforce Development In addition, the budget proposes a major new approach to workforce development. There is $1.2 billion in funding to expand workforce training—supporting a coordinated regional framework for adult education, career technical education, workforce investment and apprenticeships. “We are really looking to have a coordinated and regionally based system to make sure that our workers get the right training and our schools and educational entities are providing the right training for business and for these areas where job training can actually get people into a job,” Cohen said.

proposes spending the last $1.1 billion from the 2006 flood bond. “This is all designed to prepare the state’s water infrastructure for the future and move toward better water sustainability,” Cohen explained.

Transportation T h e s t a t e ’s l a r g e s t d e f e r r e d maintenance liability is on the state’s highways, bridges and other transportation infrastructure which totals $59 billion, Cohen pointed out. He reaffirmed the Governor’s commitment to addressing how the state will deal with needed state transportation improvements.

Budget Cycle In closing, Cohen reflected on the difficulties of the last few budgets and reiterated the Governor’s resolve to avoid the patterns of the past: “It’s too easy to get back into budget deficits of tens of billions of dollars… what we’ve done over the last few years is really commit to those things we really feel we can continue to commit to for the long term and not over commit so that when the next recession comes, we’ll have some money in our rainy day fund and we won’t have made more ongoing

commitments than we should have. We will be better prepared,” Cohen said.

Legislative Analyst The report from the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) commented that “the Governor’s reluctance to propose significant new program commitments outside of Proposition 98 could help avoid a return to the boom and bust budgeting of the past.” Over the long run, eliminating the state’s liability for retiree health care would “significantly lower state costs, affording future generations more flexibility in public budgeting,” the LAO report stated. The LAO repeated the Governor’s caution that current strong revenues “bolstered by a soaring stock market last year, may not continue for long. “As the Governor argues, the budget remains vulnerable to downturns that may re-emerge with little warning. Building budget reserves and paying down state debts remain important goals.”

Budget Summary The full summary of the Governor’s budget proposal is available at www.ebudget.ca.gov or www.dof.ca.gov.

Water Turning to infrastructure, Cohen discussed funding for water projects. In addition to $533 million from the Proposition 1 water bond to continue implementing the administration’s fiveyear Water Action Plan for sustainable water management, the budget

The grocery retailer, known for its top quality meats and expansive produce selection, will open later this fall. The new store will offer residents and neighboring communities a new food shopping experience. Shoppers will be able to enjoy cut-to-order meats, readyto-eat hot foods, freshly made tortillas, and a wide selection of produce, in addition to everything else you would expect from a traditional grocery store. Vallarta Supermarkets was founded by the Gonzalez family in 1985. Since opening its first location in Van Nuys, the L.A.-based company has expanded quickly throughout the state of California with close to 50 locations. “Whittier is excited to have Vallarta bring a new store to serve the residents of Whittier,” said Cathy Warner, mayor of the City of Whittier. “We welcome their investment in our community and look forward to their store opening in 2015.” The new supermarket will house over 40,000 square feet of Hispanic and traditional culinary items, including deli, bakery, produce and seafood departments. Additionally, Vallarta houses its own unique offerings, including a full, self-service meat counter with an extensive selection of beef, pork and chicken; a Mexican

kitchen featuring an in-store dining area; “La Isla” with ice cream and a fresh juice bar; and a “Cremeria,” which includes house-made salsas and guacamole. “Vallarta Supermarkets is excited to open a store in Whittier and be an active member of the community,” said Tony Hernandez, director of marketing of Vallarta Supermarkets. “The company is making a significant investment in the market and will bring new job opportunities, most of which will be filled locally. Vallarta Supermarkets is committed to the communities where it does business and its employees, providing support to local organizations that are important to the store’s community and customers.” The Quad forms a bustling town square at the busy intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Painter A v e n u e . Va l l a r t a S u p e r m a r k e t will be joining a strong roster of tenants including Ross, TJ Maxx, and Michaels, and will be located adjacent to the Old Navy and Rite Aid, replacing Ralph’s grocery store.

FEBRUARY 2015

How to create greater prosperity with a strategic marketing plan It is time to tackle 2015 with enthusiasm! Let me share with you some tips on how to create great prosperity with a strategic marketing plan.

Embrace the need for a plan I have been consulting with small businesses for Mark Mikelat, several years, and they simply President of do not plan their marketing! Building Aspirations It really is amazing. If you ask somebody about their next vacation, they will know a litany of details. They might know how close their cabin is to the ski-lift, or the price of a jet-ski rental at their beach resort. But, if I ask about what their marketing budget is, or what marketing channels they will use, I hear dead silence. Far too often, small business leaders implement a Hope-Plan. They hope that their marketing will work. STOP IT! You need a strategic marketing plan for your small business. The first step in planning is the realization that you need a plan.

your potential customers? How can you find them? Who is likely to buy and why? What are their price points? Why are you better than the competition? Remember, we are planning and we cannot plan blindly. You need to collect these data items bit by bit.

Shoot for the bull’s-eye Know who your fantasy client truly is. This is the center or your target market, your bull’s eye. So often I find that business owners are clueless as to this principle. A small company might not even appreciate that a contract with a government agency might double their revenue, or that clients outside of their immediate geographic region might be more profitable for them. Do some serious evaluation of your business. What are the characteristics of your customers? If you think that your business appeals to everybody, then it appears to nobody. Even if you sell something that is extraordinary, that does not determine that you will be successful. First the market must know about your product, and then, they must be interested, willing, and able to buy it. Do not try to sell me cat food. I do not own a cat.

Execute, Evaluate, Elevate, and Exit Start backwards In your marketing, always think through what you want to have happen. Start backwards. Determine the desired result and then determine what you want. Do you want new customers? Do you want existing customers to buy more? When you create your strategic marketing plan, be focused on what you want to achieve over that next year, at least. What types of purchases or want types of clients do you want? You need to market to get that result.

Research, bit by bit You eat an elephant bite, by bite. You need to do market research as part of your planning. Where are

Remember, this is a marketing plan, and a plan needs execution. You need to follow the tenets of your plan. That is why you have a plan. Imagine creating a shopping list, and then going shopping and buying nothing on the list. This sounds ridiculous, but this is what small business leaders do all of the time. If your plan collects

digital dust on your computer, then it is time to make a change. First, execute the plan. Secondly, you need to evaluate what works and what does not. If something works, do more of that; you elevate it. You might want to continue a marketing campaign that is very effective. If a marketing tactic does not work, do less of it; you exit. Once you give something a reasonable effort, and it does not work, let it go.

Seek out expert help A short article cannot provide you everything that you need to write your marketing plan. It is merely a place to start. You need to get started, but if you have started, and need expert help, contact us. Do not abandon your marketing plan. If you do not have a plan, or you give up on your plan, only your competition will benefit. Mark Mikelat is the founder and owner of Building Aspirations, a small business marketing company, focused on providing high value solutions to small business in the areas of online marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, and digital marketing. He has successfully consulted with corporations all throughout the world in sales channel development, sales systems implementation, marketing strategy, social media marketing and email marketing. Some of his clients have included Microsoft, Coach Luxury Brands, Hewlett Packard, the Los Angeles School District and many others. Learn more at www.buildingaspirations.com.

SAVE THE DATE! Hear Mark share his tips on time management and efficiency at the Whittier Chamber’s monthly Business Seminar on Thursday, February 26 at the Whittier Central Library. The workshop is free and open to the public! RSVP to info@whittierchamber.com and turn to page 5 for more details

AROUND TOWN Community Leader Anne Ricker turns 100 Anne Ricker, longtime Whittier businesswoman and community leader, celebrated her 100th birthday on Christmas Day 2014. Anne Ricker has been a member of Soroptimist International of Whittier for 62 years and was club president in 1960-61. Mrs. Ricker was also a founding member and long-term board member of Soroptimist Village in Norwalk. Founded in 1963, “The Village” is one of Anne’s favorite service projects. It is a residential facility for low income seniors, managed and supported by nine local Soroptimist clubs. Anne and her husband Mike moved to Whittier in 1941 where they started Ricker Motors, an American Motors dealership. The dealership originally was located at Whittier Blvd and Broadway and later moved to the Whittier Blvd. and Washington Blvd. intersection at Five Points. Ricker Motors was a mainstay in the Whittier community during its 62 year of operation. For many years, the company restored vintage automobiles and furnished the cars used in the Whittier Christmas Parade. As the first female fleet car dealer and owner, Mrs. Ricker broke down barriers in the otherwise male-dominated auto industry, winning the respect of many. Though a diminutive woman in stature she learned how to make her presence known among the big guys! Whittier Soroptimists are pleased to honor this treasured member on her 100th birthday!

People call upon you because you have a big heart.

Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts showcase returns to La Habra Heights The Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts will be celebrating its 55th year of showcasing a wide variety of art on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, February 20-22, 2015. One of the premier juried art shows in the West, the weekend event attracts thousands of art aficionados – both young and old – from all over California. Admission and parking are free for all attendees. The Featured Artists for 2015 are award-winning painter Yoshio (Yosh) Nakamura and noted sculptor Armando Baeza. Nakamura’s connection with the Hillcrest Festival started in 1960 as the first artist demonstrator with watercolor paintings. He has participated in all festivals but one since then. His work includes original paintings, graphics and drawings that are integrated with the computer. He has won numerous awards with his work and is in many private, public and corporate art collections. Much recognition has come to Nakamura as an artist and educator, for his active support of the arts and the community, and for his service in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the highest decorated unit in US Army history. Nakamura is “honored and thrilled” to share the featured artist billing with sculptor Armando Baeza. The pair first exhibited together at the Madonna Festival in Los Angeles many decades ago. Baeza was born in Los Angeles and is a veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Islands. He is an alumnus of the Otis Institute of Art, majoring in Sculpture. He worked as a 3D animator in Hollywood and as a doll and toy designer for the major toy

companies for forty-one years while doing fine art at the same time. His first major public artwork in bronze was in 1962, and he has continued to create bronze sculptures of various sizes since then. Baeza’s signature public piece is his bronze sculpture near the entrance to the Pico Rivera City Hall. The festival has an extensive variety of art on display and available for purchase at a wide range of prices: watercolor and oil paintings, unique jewelry, ceramics, acrylics, pottery, hand-woven clothing, photography, stained and fused glass, metal and wire sculpture, woodworking, and a great selection of handcrafted gifts in the Arts & Crafts Boutique. There will also be many artists demonstrating their skills throughout the weekend, including weaving, painting, jewelry-making, wood-turning, and ceramics. Children will have fun in the free art workshops on Saturday and Sunday where they can create their own artwork. Festival attendees can browse, shop, enjoy musical entertainment, and have lunch at the Starving Artist Café, sponsored by Lascari’s Restaurant. Each year many new artists, as well as long-time favorites, are chosen to participate. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. As always, admission and parking are free. Hillcrest Congregational Church is located at 2000 West Road, La Habra Heights, near the border of Whittier. For more information call (562) 947-3755, email www.hillcrest-church.org, or visit www.hillcrestfestivaloffinearts.com.

AROUND TOWN Activate Whittier celebrates 6 years of building a healthy active Whittier Activate Whittier celebrated six years of building a healthy active Whittier this past November 2014. In January, Activate Whittier was awarded a $200,000 Kaiser Permanente HEAL Partnership Grant for 2015-16. This grant brings Kaiser Permanente’s combined investment into Activate Whittier to a half a million dollars. The YMCA of Greater Whittier will continue to serve as the fiscal administrator and backbone organization through which Activate Whittier has made $700,000 of investment into the Whittier community. Through exceptional leadership, Activate Whittier will continue to work toward improving the lives of Whittier residents through health promotion initiatives for the community at large, community based organizations, and local schools. Concerned with the childhood obesity rate in Whittier – one of the highest in Los Angeles County – Activate Whittier partners came together in 2008 to maximize resources to address this alarming health trend. As Lori Tiffany, Vice-President and Executive Director, Uptown Whittier YMCA and Chair of Activate Whittier said, “Solving our obesity problem is not something a single person or organization can do alone. The hard work of our partner organizations and engaged residents are the reason for Activate Whittier’s success.” The Activate Whittier Collaborative is determined to change the tide on obesity rates in Whittier. Interested residents, community and business leaders are urged to join the movement to build “A Healthy Active Whittier.” For

JOIN ME IN BECOMING A CHAMBER MEMBER TESTIMONIAL

DID YOU KNOW...

I’m very happy that I joined the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. It has been a pleasure getting to know the staff and other members. I have been warmly welcomed by the entire business community and much of that started with the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. They have provided me with numerous opportunities to network, connect with clients, and build new friendships.

Chamber members can host a table at the monthly Wake Up Whittier breakfast for FREE? Call (562) 698-9554 to reserve your table for the opportunity to hand out your goodies and information to fellow business representatives!
