Lincoln Specific Plan Unveiled for Nelles site Neighbors4Whittier.com Launched by Residents to Support Brookfield Proposal Plans to transform the former Nelles Correctional facility are proceeding and public hearings before the Planning Commission will take place in the near future. The proposal by Brookfield Residential would provide a mix of new shopping opportunities, including a grocery store and major shopping outlets. 750 new home opportunities (single family, townhomes, and apartments), a public trail with historic markers and a park are also included in the plan. Of interest to the business community, the Brookfield proposal would generate up to $1.5 million per year for the City’s General Fund. About 1,600 short and long term jobs would also result from
project implementation. A group of residents and business owners have formed a new group named Neighbors 4 Whittier’s Future to support the plan. The group’s website – Neighbors4Whittier.com – allows visitors to endorse the plan and add a supportive quote. “It is important for those in favor of this project to let their voices be heard,” stated Whittier resident supporter Mark Nelson. “If the silent majority remains silent, there is a chance this project will not be approved and the Nelles site will remain undeveloped and a wasted opportunity for growth in Whittier.” A diverse group of Whittier residents have quotes on the website. The
primary reasons for support include the economic benefits and new shopping opportunities created if the project is approved. Others support the plan because it’s a way to guarantee the property never again becomes a prison. According to the website, Brookfield will also spend millions of dollars to fund the renovation of up to four historic buildings on the property at no cost to taxpayers. The Whittier Chamber’s Economic Development Committee and Board of Directors will continue to keep members posted on the status of this important project. Ultimately, the City Council will review and vote on the plans.

I can’t believe how quickly this year has flown by! As my term as Chamber president draws to an end, I can’t help but look back at my time as a member of the Whittier Chamber and reflect on the many ways my business, and honestly my life, has been changed through my involvement with the organization. When I first opened Shannon G’s Flowers over 11 years ago, I would never have guessed that one day I would serve in a leadership role with the Whittier Chamber. Back in 2003 I was eager and optimistic about the future of my
business. As a new chamber member I started off like many people do by simply attending a few events here and there and occasionally donating a raffle item. It wasn’t until I volunteered at the Hathaway Golf Classic that I realized the impact the Whittier Chamber had on the greater community. I love Whittier; it has been my home for over 25 years, and I realize that everyone‌ homeowners, business people, children, families, visitors to the city‌ benefit from a strong local economy and an informed and involved business community. Basically, a strong chamber is good for Whittier! Our chamber members are diverse and represent all types of businesses from throughout the region. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you this year and appreciate the different services, talents, and skills each of your businesses brings to the table. Thank you for your continued commitment, dedication, and support of the Whittier
Chamber of Commerce. It’s because of our members, volunteers, and staff that our chamber continues to be a fresh and vibrant business organization dedicated to supporting our members in all areas of business. Today I continue to be eager and optimistic about the future of my business. Great things are happening in our community and I plan to continue to build lasting relationships and take advantage of all the benefits the chamber has to offer my business. Over the last 11 years I have learned a lot from the Whittier Chamber about business, legislation, marketing, and networking. I’ve also made friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you during the Whittier Chamber’s 100th year. It truly has been my pleasure and an experience I will never forget.

There is a very powerful estate planning tool that may enable you to reduce your liability for income and estate taxes and diversify your assets in a tax-advantaged manner. It’s called a charitable remainder trust (CRT). Here’s how it works. A CRT is an irrevocable trust that makes annual or more frequent payments to you, typically until you die. What remains in the trust then passes to a qualified charity of your choice. A
number of advantages may flow from the CRT. First, you will obtain a current income tax charitable contribution deduction for the value of the charity’s interest in the trust. The deduction is permitted when the trust is created even though the charity has to wait to receive anything. Second, the CRT is a vehicle that can enhance your investment return. Because the CRT pays no income taxes, the CRT can generally sell an appreciated asset without recognizing any gain. This enables the trustee to reinvest the full amount of the proceeds and thus generate larger payments to you for your life. The trust will be eligible for the estate tax charitable deduction if it passes to one or more qualified charities at your death. If you wish to replace the value of the contributed property for heirs who might otherwise
have received it, you could use some of your cash savings from the charitable income tax deduction to purchase a life insurance policy on your life for the benefit of your heirs. Often, through the leveraging effect of life insurance, it is possible to pass on assets of greater value than those contributed to the CRT. In this way, your heirs are not deprived of property they had expected to inherit. A CRT is a very complex arrangement, but it is also an invaluable planning tool in the right circumstances. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

City Of Whittier
UPDATE
MAYOR'S MESSAGE Cathy Warner
Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for hosting a wonderful Silver Shield awards event last month. The City of Whittier is very fortunate to have its own Police Department and the City Council is proud of every sworn and civilian member of the Department. Congratulations again to the many police officers and staff members who were honored for their dedication to public safety. Every Whittier Chamber event is excellent, but the Silver Shield awards banquet is a special evening, both entertaining and rewarding. Thank you to all of the individuals and businesses that helped plan and sponsor the event. A safe community is a prosperous community! This month progress will continue with the development project at the former Fred C. Nelles site. The Planning Commission will take up the proposed development by Brookfield Homes beginning in mid March. These public hearings will provide community members with the opportunity to comment on the project in its entirety. The public is encouraged to participate in this process which will allow Brookfield Homes to build a project that reflects the community’s interests. The proposed development at Nelles is a mixed-use project that will include up to 750 homes and approximately 200,000 square feet of retail/commercial development. Commercial development continues to occur throughout Whittier. Applebee’s will be anchoring a new commercial center at the former Saturn dealership site that will also feature a Starbucks, a Jersey Mike’s, and another tenant as yet to be named. The new owners of the former Ford and Cadillac dealership sites are preparing to submit plans for a new shopping center. Located within the Shopping Center District of the Whittier Boulevard Specific Plan and just west of the Whittwood Town Center on the north side of the Boulevard, the new center will create more shopping and dining opportunities for the community. The
former Seafare Inn site is now home to the Original Pancake House. The owners will be making tenant improvements in the coming months and expect to open later this year. Also, both Vallarta Market and Smart & Final Extra will be opening in the coming months here in town. Formation of the voting districts is moving forward. At the end of last year, several meetings were held with stakeholders and community members to begin to develop potential voting district boundaries. A second round of meetings has been scheduled for the first week of this month to solicit additional community input on the latest voting district formation proposals. The meetings will have identical presentations, so community members are encouraged to attend the one most convenient: Monday, March 2, 2015 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. La Serna High School 15301 Youngwood Dr. Thursday, March 5, 2015 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Orange Grove School 10626 Orange Grove Ave. Saturday, March 7, 2015 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Evergreen School 12915 Helmer Dr. The next public hearing before the City Council on voting districts formation is set for March 31, 2015. Please visit the City website for more information at www. cityofwhittier.org . The Whittier City Council is very grateful for the new and improved Kennedy Park which is an excellent example of a public-private partnership and included groups such as the Whittier Community Foundation, Whittier Host Lions Club, Nestle USA, and community volunteers and children from the local area. KaBoom!, a national nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that all children experience a playful childhood, donated the play equipment. A colorful mural, the final piece of the project, was recently completed by local artist Dennis McGonagle along with community partners and local youth. The City Council extends sincere thanks to everyone who participated in transforming Kennedy Park from a passive park area into a vibrant, active space for children and families.

Fall in Love with Heart Health As a leading voice on improving the nation’s health, the YMCA of Greater Whittier urges everyone in Whittier to take steps toward making sure they are heart healthy so they can lead longer, healthier lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the nation’s number one killer, responsible for 1 in 4 deaths each year in the United States. The Y offers community-based healthy living and chronic disease prevention initiatives that support people in changing their lifestyles, encourage organizations and communities to adopt behaviors that promote healthy living and promote the public’s health through advocacy. Concerned with the high incidence of preventable diseases and obesity, Activate Whittier was formed in 2008 when the City of Whittier and the YMCA of Greater Whittier maximized resources to address this alarming health trend. Today, Activate Whittier with the YMCA of Greater Whittier as fiscal administrator has been awarded $700,000 in grant funding and has the support of many community residents and partner organizations. Together, we have created a community action plan that features health promotion initiatives for the community-at-large, community organizations, and local schools. “Heart disease is a critical issue for all Whittier residents and it’s never too late to get heart healthy,” said Lori Tiffany Vice- President, YMCA of Greater Whittier. “Organizations like the Y have numerous options that can get you on the right path to avoid this preventable condition.” In addition to programs and services offered in the City of Whittier, Activate Whittier offers the following tips on how to live heart healthy. • Get Physical: Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. Plan and schedule opportunities for active play; for example, include a brisk 10-minute trip around the block after meals or a 10-minute walking break during the day. If your family enjoys active video games, select versions that require moving the body’s large muscle groups while playing. • Take a Snooze: Lack of sleep has been associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours of sleep at night to aid with the prevention of heart disease. Children need 1012 hours of sleep per night. Develop bedtime routines for the whole family to assist with falling asleep faster and staying asleep. • Shape Up Those Recipes: Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food without sacrificing taste. For example, use low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream and skip the seasoning packet and use pepper and olive oil instead. Read food labels to learn more about what is in the package, select foods that have less than 1,000 mg of sodium per serving. • Feeling the Pressure: According to the American Heart Association, lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 adults (about 78 million people) have high blood pressure and more than half of them don’t have it under control. Start self-monitoring your blood pressure and know the numbers. Discuss the results with you doctor. • Play Together: Spending time together as a family is a great way to reduce stress, which is important to heart health. Make homemade valentines for your children’s classmates or build a snow fort together in the yard or the park. About Activate Whittier Since 2008, Activate Whittier has been building a healthy, active Whittier through community engagement, and partnerships with a focus on policies to improve the health and wellness of those living, working, learning and playing in our community. Cyberbullying Prevention Captain Michael Davis
Nowadays, most teenagers and young adults spend a lot of time on a cell phone or instant messenger chatting with friends and uploading photos, videos, and music to websites. They have online friends whom they may have never met in person, with whom they play games and exchange messages. Teens’ lives exist in a variety of places such as school hallways, part-time jobs, and friends’ houses. Now many teens also have lives on the Internet, and bullying has followed teens online. Online bullying, also called cyberbullying, happens when teens use the Internet, cell phones, or other electronic devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person. Cyberbullying is a problem that affects almost half of all American teens. Whether you’ve been a victim of cyberbullying, or you are a parent who knows someone who has been cyberbullied, there are steps you can talk with your kids about to stop cyberbullying and stay cyber-safe.
How Are Teens Cyberbullied?
Being a victim of cyberbullying can be a common and painful experience. Some youth who cyberbully pretend they are other people online to trick others, spread lies and rumors about victims, trick people into revealing personal information, send or forward mean text messages, and post pictures of victims without their consent. When teens were asked why they think others cyberbully, 81 percent said that cyberbullies think it’s funny. Other teens believe that youth who cyberbully don’t think it’s a big deal, don’t think about the consequences, are encouraged by friends, think everybody cyberbullies, and think they won’t get caught.
How Do Victims React?
Contrary to what cyberbullies may believe, cyberbullying is a big deal and can cause a variety of reactions in teens. Some teens have reacted in positive ways to try to prevent cyberbullying by blocking communication with the cyberbully, deleting messages without reading them, talking to a friend about the bullying, and reporting the problem to an Internet service provider or website moderator. Many youth experience a variety of emotions when they are cyberbullied. Youth who are cyberbullied report feeling angry, hurt, embarrassed, or scared. These emotions can cause victims to react in ways such as seeking revenge on the bully, avoiding friends and activities, and cyberbullying back. Some teens feel threatened because they may not know who is cyberbullying them. Although cyberbullies may think they are anonymous, they can be found. If you are cyberbullied or harassed or you are a parent and your child is being bullied, and need help, save all communication with the cyberbully and contact the cell provider, website management, school authorities, or law enforcement.
How Can You Prevent Cyberbullying?
Teens have figured out ways to prevent cyberbullying. Follow in the footsteps of other quick-thinking teens and refuse to pass along cyberbullying messages, tell friends to stop cyberbullying, block communication with cyberbullies, and report cyberbullying to a trusted adult. You can also help prevent cyberbullying by speaking with other students, as well as teachers and school administrators, to develop rules against cyberbullying, and raising awareness of the cyberbullying problem in your community by holding an assembly and creating fliers to give to younger kids or parents. Don’t forget that even though you can’t see a cyberbully or the bully’s victim, cyberbullying causes real problems. If you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t say it online. Delete cyberbullying. Don’t write it. Don’t forward it. Source: NCPC

New McGonagle mural graces Kennedy Park A brilliant new mural by Whittier artist Dennis McGonagle graces the newlyrefurbished Kennedy Park. This is the second of new improvements at the park; the first was the installation of new playground equipment through the KaBOOM program, partnered with the Nestle Company, and installed by City staff and volunteers from Nestle, the Whittier Host Lions Club and Kennedy neighborhood residents. McGonagle’s latest mural, which is on the park building, took more than a month to plan and a little over a week to paint. Entitled, “A Walk in the Hills”, it begins with familiar scenes of the neighborhoods and hills of Whittier and then takes a magical turn into a mysterious, brilliantlycolored jungle in South America, bursting with exotic, colorful flowers and plants. The jungle scene then turns the corner where it returns to a sunset view of Whittier from Hellman Park. McGonagle was assisted in this project by dozens of painters who came to support a community paint-in to kick off the mural project. The volunteers brought all levels of experience from art school graduates to little children who had never painted before. “Some of the volunteers kept coming back day after day to assist in the project,” McGonagle said. “Everyone
was given the chance to paint that day and as a result, the wall absorbed a tremendous amount of creative energy.” McGonagle was aided by his assistant, Tyler Kinnaman, who has collaborated on every mural project that McGonagle has undertaken beginning with the Whittier Museum mural in 2006. Also supporting the project were professional painters who are his friends, including Don Forkner, Cynthia Nalbach, Marshel Copple, Terry McGonagle, Lark Hickey and Melanie Fries, who was vacationing here from Switzerland when the mural was getting underway. McGonagle said he received valuable critical support from his former painting professor from Rio Hondo College, Jerry Romotsky. “Jerry came to look at the work in progress and called me up with some excellent ideas,” he said. “Professor Romotsky’s suggestions helped transform the piece from a painting on a wall into a living mural.” McGonagle is busy working on plans for a second mural in the park, a 65-foot timeline showing the history of Whittier from prehistoric times and extending far into the future. “My main objective is to bring energy, color, and beauty to the park,” McGonagle said. “Kennedy Park is undergoing a Renaissance, and I am happy to be part of that effort.”

If you have owned rental property or have inherited a home and become a landlord, be prepared to wear many hats. Being a landlord isn’t for everyone, but most property owners are “do-it-yourself” landlords which means taking on the responsibilities of a property manager. While many are successful, most struggle with the basics like rent collection, maintenance, Laurie Perschbacher, and even evictions. Here are five great reasons to hire a property manager so you can get back to enjoying your life. MAP Property Management
1 – Screening Tenants This is the most important step you can take as a landlord. Verifying their credit, criminal, and eviction history is a crucial part of this process. With the current eviction laws, when a tenant is evicted, they can get their case sealed so it won’t show up on the eviction search. Verify current and previous landlords and listen to what they say. If they are vague, it could be a red flag. We just had an eviction where it was specifically stated in the judgment that I could only give neutral responses to any rental inquiries on this tenant. Some property managers who called to verify her residency understood my vague responses. The court system is not making it easy on landlords. Be aware!
3 – Ethics and Legal Issues Many homeowners-turned-landlords are not up to date on current state laws with regards to evictions. Fair Housing laws are also an area where there can be problems as to what you can and can’t say to perspective tenants. Making a mistake when filling out a 3 Day Notice to Pay Rent or Quit might mean starting the eviction process over. 4 – Rent Collection Chasing down your tenants every month for their rent payment can be very frustrating. Professional property management companies have software programs that assist in collecting rents. Our tenants can pay their rent online and we are able to track all transactions for each tenant. Tenants can also report any maintenance issues online. 5 – Maintaining the Property Property maintenance has to be the most time consuming and expensive part of being a property owner. A rental property increases those expenses and time commitments even more. Every time a tenant moves out there are more expenses such as re-keying or changing locks, painting, cleaning. Necessary upgrades will also take more time and money. Then there’s marketing, advertising, showing, screening, and signing a new lease just to name a few. Having the home or apartment in good showing condition is key to getting high market rents and attracting a qualified tenant. Hiring a professional property manager is a great way to avoid missing some of life’s important moments like a dance recital or the big game. Take back your life and your investment! It’s training me for work in a real life restaurant kitchen,” said senior Maria Vasquez, who plans to attend the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Canada, hopes to own a restaurant and, perhaps, follow in Sones’ footsteps to become a teacher. The Culinary Arts Academy has been in place at Cal High for 18 years and is graduating its 15th class this year. Each year, the three-year program enrolls a new class of about 40 sophomores, who also take a regular load of core academic subjects. Students also participate in career training and gain weekly work experience at such places as the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital cafeteria and Crepes and Grapes Cafe in Whittier. “The Academy has given me the chance to learn to bake and cook and allowed me to explore which art I like best,” said senior Jennifer Garcia, who plans to get a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts from the Culinary Institute of America. “Baking has been a passion I’ve always had and I’m glad that I can get experience before I graduate.” Ninety-eight percent of Cal High culinary students go on to pursue postsecondary education, including technical/ vocational schools, community college or four-year universities, Sones said. “Thanks to the support of our community, California High School and its dedicated educators are able to provide exceptional training to our students, who are gaining complete knowledge of the latest hightech skills needed to pursue the culinary and hospitality fields upon graduation,” said Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. “I California High School Culinary Arts Academy students am proud of our students for their hard test their new equipment in the newly renovated facility, work and Mrs. Sones for providing the which includes appliances, dish-washing areas and more. leadership to drive their success.”

2 – Showing the Property Your time is valuable. Not only do you need to get the property ready to rent which means after work and on weekends, but then you must make the appointments to show your vacancy. This means taking more time away from family and work. Wouldn’t you rather that time be spent doing something else? With a property management company, they schedule appointments for you. At M A P Property Management, we show the perspective tenants the unit personally. We are able to meet and interact with perspective tenants and help them imagine where their furniture could go. California High School culinary students have been waiting all year long to use their newly renovated classroom kitchen facility to whip up new recipes, cook up sweet and savory delights and learn what it takes to be a professional chef. In January, the 103 Culinary Arts Academy students broke in the $1.2 million industrial facility, which includes new appliances, baking and cooking equipment, television sets to view cooking demonstrations, cabinetry, tile floor, dish washing areas and more. The modernization project was made possible through the District’s $75 million Measure W bond, approved by voters in 2008 to improve campus facilities. “The kitchen is a 21-year dream come true,” said Susan Sones, Culinary Arts Academy Lead Teacher and Department Chair. “I want to thank the District administration, community members and my husband, Drew, for enthusiastically supporting Measure W to enhance career and technical education for our students.” Culinary students showcased the remodeled facility and their cooking skills to the community during a “Big Reveal” open house celebration and scholarship fundraising on Feb. 20. “We already have a wonderful Culinary Academy in place, and this facility provides our talented students a professional setting where they have the opportunity to learn the skills and excel in this career pathway should they choose to pursue it long-term,” Principal Bill Schloss said. Students had been working out of a temporary facility since construction began in December 2013 to replace a decades-old home economics classroom that contained home-style equipment. The facility now boasts professional tools, a separate classroom where students learn the basics of cooking and a kitchen area where they prepare meals. The space also has individual rooms for refrigerators and dry storage. The laundry

F I N A N C I A L U P DAT E Plunging Oil Prices: A Good News/ Bad News Story
Douglas M. Rowan, CFP®, CMFC, AIF®
As crude oil prices hit their lowest point in more than four years, consumers around the globe are asking: What are the potential benefits and downside of lower oil prices? Oil prices, which are down nearly one-third since last summer’s peak, have come under pressure due in one part to new energy supplies -- notably from the United States -- which are tipping the balance of supply and demand1 and Saudi Arabia tactically increasing production. Over the past several years U.S. oil production has increased more than 70% and, according to The New York Times, “the United States is poised to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s top producer, possibly in a matter of months.”2 Cheap Oil: Good Medicine or Economic Malaise? Do lower oil prices have a positive or negative effect on the global economy? The answer is, “probably.” Generally, cheaper oil is good for the American economy. It is estimated savings from tumbling gas prices represent the equivalent of a $75 billion
tax cut for U.S. consumers -- or roughly $1,100 per family on an annual basis if prices remain at current levels (as of December 2, 2014).3 More disposable income in the hands of consumers is likely to boost consumer spending, which, in turn, feeds economic growth. Case in point: Automakers reported total sales for the month of November were up 4.6% to 1.3 million, the best monthly finish since 2001.4 In a broader economic context, lower oil prices reduce the cost to manufacturers of producing and transporting their goods, and to airlines of operating their aircraft, thereby improving profit margins and investor sentiment. On a global scale, lower oil prices should boost consumption and lower manufacturing costs in oil-importing economies, particularly in Europe, where sluggish economic growth has much of the continent teetering on the brink of recession. Yet the immediate positive effects of lower oil prices in Europe need to be tempered by longer-term realities -- namely, weak economic fundamentals and the specter of deflation -- an extended period of falling prices. The Deflation Factor Often, when prices fall across the board, consumers put off making major purchases on the hopes prices will fall even further. When spending stalls, companies’ revenues suffer and pressure mounts to cut costs by laying off workers, freezing or reducing wages, or raising the price of the goods they produce -- all of which can further stymie

People with a parent, sibling or child that has been diagnosed with the disease are two to three times more likely to develop colon cancer. And 90 percent of all new cases occur in people 50 or older. If you’re at risk, schedule your colonoscopy today, and make sure colon cancer doesn’t keep you from enjoying the moments to come.

Beverly Hospital introduces new cutting-edge therapy
In mid-January, Beverly Hospital held a community lecture to introduce a new orthopedic procedure to its medical staff and residents of the community. The procedure called Subchondroplasty (SCP®) is a minimally invasive joint preservation procedure to treat early osteoarthritis of the knee commonly diagnosed in adults 65 years or older, but people of all ages may be affected. Beverly Hospital speaker and well-known orthopedic surgeon Rick Pospisil, M.D. is one of only a handful of physicians in Southern California who specializes in this cutting-edge therapy. Patient recovery may range from three days to two weeks compared to six months with the more invasive arthritis treatments such as total knee replacement. People who suffer from chronic pain and reduced mobility may benefit from this medical breakthrough and in some cases this therapy may be the best option for treatment. Success rates have been extremely high. The event was sponsored by West Ocean MD, Industrial Clinic professional medical organization who specializes in worker’s compensation injuries is associated with Beverly Hospital. The hospital was proud to welcome in attendance Jack Hadjinian, Montebello’s newly elected mayor, along with other community and business leaders. For more information about the Subchondroplasty procedure or West Ocean MD workers’ compensation program, please call (323) 837-0726.

AROUND TOWN From Maddi’s Closet recognized by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles From Maddi’s Closet, a local non-profit organization working toward providing needed funds to childhood cancer patients, is proud to share the story of Juan, a patient at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Cancer Survivor Juan Moreno said, “I’m glad I never gave up!” At just 6 years old, Juan Moreno was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a cancer that affects the blood, bone marrow, and immune system. Fast-forward another six years and this amazing youngster is more than a cancer survivor; he is a striver who has faced the challenges in his life with a smile. That can-do attitude helped Juan achieve a major goal: running the 2014 Los Angeles Marathon. Juan’s story began when his mother, Gloria Moreno, became concerned that her normally cheerful “Juanito,” as friends and family call him, looked pale and complained of a stomachache that wouldn’t go away. “My motherly instincts said I needed to take Juanito to a hospital,” she says. “Not knowing where to take him, I jumped on the Metro and gratefully found Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.” Juan and his mother spent two weeks at Children’s Hospital and the next two years combating ALL, but Juan rarely showed the strain of his illness. “When he began to lose his hair, I was the one who cried, not him,” says his mother. “He just simply said, ‘Less hair to deal with mom.” Thanks to the generous support of the community, kids like Juan not only receive life-changing and life-saving cancer care, but receive the hope and love that From Maddi’s Closet is founded upon. Juan is one of nearly 5,000 kids being treated by CHLA for cancer, and among the resources that the hospital offers is special visits at the hospital’s inpatient unit, clinic, and infusion center from volunteers like those offered by From Maddi’s Closet, who bring smiles and gentle distraction to brighten their days. Families like that of “Juanito” also receive psychosocial and financial support to assist them in purchasing everything from durable medical equipment, like special wheelchairs and mobility devices, to household aids for chronically ill children, thanks to the generous support of From Maddi’s Closet donors. For information on the Super Hero 5K Run/Walk benefitting From Maddi’s Closet coming up on Saturday, April 11th, visit www.frommaddiscloset.org or see their save-the-date ad on paeg 15.
First Day to honor retiring executive director Ted Knoll at Angel Awards dinner Whittier First Day requests your attendance in honoring esteemed community members Ted Knoll, Francine Rippy, Maria Alcala, and the Whittier Uptown Association at their Community Angel Award Dinner. The dinner will take place at the Whittier Area Community Church on Friday, March 27th at 6 p.m. Ted Knoll, longtime executive director of First Day, has been directing the organization since 1999 and was instrumental in writing the policies and procedures which have carried the organization through its many years of serving the homeless population within our community. He will be retiring this year and everyone who has been impacted by First Day is invited to attend and show their appreciation. Francine Rippy, another community advocate, has been on the First Day board of directors since the organization’s beginning and remains a continuous supporter of its programs
and initiatives. Maria Alcala, once a First Day resident, is now the prevention case manager and housing navigator for First Day and serves on the board of directors. When the Federal government presented the plan for finding housing for veterans and the homeless, only 15 cities in the United States were able to successfully accomplish the nation’s goal. Whittier was honored as one of those 15 cities under Maria’s ongoing leadership. First Day has been closely associated with the Whittier Uptown Association since the organization opened in 2001. The Whittier Uptown Association gives opportunities for First Day residents to volunteer in their activities including the annual Christmas parade, antique shows, and car shows. The cost of the Angel Award Dinner is $45 per person or $350 for a table of 8. If you are interested in attending please email info@whittierfirstday.org or contact Bonnie Watje at (562) 945-9638.
Join the East Whittier Lions Club and make a difference in your community The East Whittier Lions Club is seeking civic-minded men and women to join them in making a difference in the community. The club meets Friday mornings at 7 a.m. at Mimi’s Restaurant at the Whittwood Town Center. “Our club gives members an opportunity to advance worthy causes, serve with friends, and become leaders in their community. This club means a lot to our Lions, but it means so much more to the people we serve,” said Ted Dean, club president. Men and women who are interested are invited to attend the weekly meetings and learn more about the club and the projects in which the club is involved. “We want to share the great things we’re doing in the community, and let others know how they can help,” said
Ted Dean, club president. The Lions’ motto is “We Serve” and the East Whittier Lions club has lived up to it. The club provides eye exams and glasses for the students in the East Whittier School District, collects used eyeglasses, and raises money for needed projects in town. At Christmas, the club has a children’s party for special education students within the District. This party has been a very rewarding project for over 40 years. To learn more about East Whittier Lions Club or its service projects, contact Fran Coeur, membership chair at (562) 945-6034 or visit www.eclubhouse.org/sites/eastwhittierca/ for details.
